Allan Turner of the Houston Chronicle said the building served as an "educational anchor" for the Third Ward as many professionals in the community such as educators, ministers and lawyers received an education there. Since Ryan's beginning, Turner said, the school's fortunes had risen and fallen as time passed. The HISD school board forced Yates principal William S. Holland to stay at Ryan Middle School instead of moving to the new Yates, and a petition did not succeed in changing this. The school opened for AfricanAmericans; was desegregated by 1970. In 1988, Chase Enterprises subsidiary Rangers Insurance Co. assigned employees to tutor Ryan students, funded school supplies and computers. The company deposited $150,000 annually to provide vocational training and/or university education to alumni who abstained from drugs, did not get into legal trouble, and graduated from high school. This benefitted 166 eligible alumi from 1992 - 1996. A 2008 Houston Chronicle article considered Ryan to be among the lowest performing campuses in Houston ISD. HISD staff stated that the district needed signing bonuses in order to convince employees to take positions at Ryan Middle School. Continue @wikipedia.com
