HOUSTON - Marian Wright Edelman once said, “Education remains one of the Black community’s most enduring values. It is sustained by the belief that freedom and education go hand in hand, that learning and train-
ing are essential to economic quality and independence.” For four generations and counting, the Allen family has subscribed to the sentiments offered by Edelman here. The Allen’s have dedicated their lives to educating and inspiring
students throughout the state of Texas. Recently, I was privileged to have a sit-down with Mr. Lawrence A. Allen, Jr the only African-American representative on the Texas State Board of Education. Read on to learn more
about this influential educator. The Beginning Lawrence Alvin Allen Jr. is the latter of two children birthed to Lawrence A. Sr. and State Representative Dr. Alma A. Allen. In 1961, the Allen’s departed Herman Hospital with
