moving, and heart felt tribute to the slain Freddy Gray that was released weeks before his May 2015 benefit concert for the Gray family. The lyrics were Prince’s in your face message to Baltimore police and city officials who first stonewalled Gray’s death, and then watched as riots convulsed the city in the aftermath of it. This was no fly by night cheap, celebrity photo op publicity gambit to capitalize on the turbulent events in the city.

The month before the soft-spoken Prince gently reminded and admonished the audience at the Grammys at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, “Albums — remember those?”

“Albums still matter. Albums, like books and black lives, still matter.”

Even before Prince took the stage at the Grammys and in Baltimore at the Gray Benefit concert, I remembered the flap that he had caused two years earlier with his lambaste of Wall Street greed in his song “Ol’ Skool Company.” He minced no words, “Fat cats on Wall Street, they got a bailout, while somebody else got to wait.” “$700 billion but my old neighborhood, ain’t nothing changed but the date.”

When I heard those words I thought back to the Prince concert I attended in the early 90s and especially the one I attended at the

At this concert, Prince insisted that tickets not carry the standard usurious, highway robbery prices for big name performer’s concerts. The result was that the concerts were more community events than a celebrity studded concert event. The concert was a stop on his national tour billed as Welcome 2 America tour. Prince ladled out more than $1 million from proceeds of the tour to the Harlem Children’s Zone and more than $500,000 to arts programs in New York and North Carolina. This made sense and was in keeping with Prince’s rage against hunger, poverty, and especially its devastating and corrosive effects on children in a track in his 1985 single, “Hello.”

He both pleaded for and scolded America for its abysmal indifference to the hungry and poor, “We’re against hungry children, our record stands tall, but there’s just as much hunger here at home.”

The evening at the Forum, Prince gave a mellow, subdued, and fan warm appreciation concert.

He showed himself as an artist and entertainer who really cared about his audience and who was conscious of who his audience was and their appreciation for him as a musician band a man of social consciousness.

WHEN VIOLENCE IS YOUR NORMAL

I never realized I was different until I got to Yale. I thought my life experiences were normal - that everybody had to face adversity and overcome challenges. Most people did in their own ways, but then I realized their struggles weren’t like mine. Their struggles weren’t matters of life and death. Their struggles didn’t pose any threat to their physical body. I guess it was because they weren’t from Oakland, California.

Oakland has a long history of dealing with violence, and so have I. I was born to two loving parents, one with scars from multiple gunshot wounds after being shot on the streets of East Palo Alto. Even their love couldn’t shield me

from the dangers of our neighborhood.

I was seven years old when, while riding my bike in the street in front of my house, I heard the shots ring out.

I saw the men run out of the house, the tires screech off, and seconds later, heard the screams. I witnessed my neighbor’s murder that day, and it has never left my head.

At eight years old, a similar scene: I woke up on a normal school day to some commotion outside of the house.

As my brothers and I cleared the condensation from our bedroom window, we saw our neighbor running for help, suffering from a stab wound to the neck, blood gushing onto the street. We opened our door to him. We wrapped his neck and called an ambulance. On this day, we saved a life.

Dr. Jones, I have heard so many differing comments regarding if I can vote or not because I am a convicted felon who has paid his debt to society by serving my sentence.

A Reformed Citizen Reformed Citizen let me first commend you for ‘paying your debt to society’ and then turning your life around and becoming an up-standing citizen.

This question regarding the Voting Rights of those within our community that have been convicted of a felony has been discussed so often that it has now become an urban legend of sorts.

I will make this answer relatively brief because I most certainly do not want there to be any misunderstanding regarding this matter; I personally consider the vote to be the most precious and powerful item that a citizen possesses as it allows for them to express how they feel about the present direction of the At 15 years old now, on a Sunday afternoon, I get a call from my parents saying my brother is in trouble. They told me not to panic. My brother went to prison that day. He didn’t get released until I was 19. I went four years without being able to see my biggest role model, my best friend, my keeper. I spent the bulk of those four years thinking about how I could get our family to a place where my brother never felt the need to commit a crime again.

At 16 years old, my brother was out on bail. I got a call from my godsister, crying, struggling to get the words out.

The answer to this question of whether convicted felons can vote or not is addressed in the Texas Election Code. The most important portion of the alluded to rule reads as follows: Pursuant to Section 11.002 of the Texas Election Code (the “Code”), once a felon has successfully completed his or her punishment, including any term of incarceration, parole, supervision, period of probation, or has been pardoned, then that person is immediately eligible to register to vote.

Put simply, once you have completed your entire sentence, including any parole/probation/ supervision, you are free to register and vote.

I know that I do not need to tell you how important your vote is to electing people who think like you to help you as you continue to work toward a fulfilling life.

Take your vote seriously and use it to improve your life by voting for those who will help you by creating legislation that favors you and your interests.

“THERE’S A “HARRIET” IN YO POCKET…” Before I Lay it Down...

When I was young, I never paid much attention to the images printed on American currency and coinage.

Knowing background information associated with those individuals wasn’t THAT important to me. All I was concerned about was the value of each bill and how I could get my hands on a few of those “Benjamins”. As I grew older (and smarter), I learned that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, and Ulysses Grant were presidents who are pictured on our paper currency.

I also knew that Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin were not.

Many Americans are not aware of this; some still think that Franklin was POTUS and sat in the Oval Office. He may have sat in there, but it wasn’t in a presidential manner, although, it should have been. He was as decorated as any of America’s forefathers and was a signer on the Declaration of Independence AND the United States Constitution.

Outside of doing some stupid ISH like flying a kite in a thunderstorm to test the power of electricity and owning slaves, Ole Ben was a pretty smart dude. His image is on the hundred dollar bill.

Twelve presidents owned slaves at one point during their lifetimes and 8 owned slaves during their presidencies.

The first was George Washington and the last was Ulysses Grant. If you’ve watched the movie “Amistad”, you would have found out that John Adams (the 2nd president) and his son, John Quincy Adams (the 6th president) never owned slaves. I wonder if that other father/son presidential duo of George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush would have owned slaves had they been around back in the day. I wouldn’t bet against it, but I guess we’ll never know. John F. Kennedy’s image is on the half dollar coin and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s is on the dime. They never owned slaves, but both lived during a time when civil rights issues were in the forefront of their presidencies.

FDR would lead us out of the “Great

Depression” while JFK would usher us into a “New Frontier”, but today I’d like to talk about a president many Americans haven’t heard of until lately: Andrew Jackson.

As president, Andrew Jackson forcibly relocated over 16,000 Cherokee Indians from Florida to Oklahoma.

Men, women, and children of all ages were forced to walk over 1200 miles to reservations because of the greed of White Americans who wanted to take their lands. Over 4000 Cherokee died from heat, cold, lack of food and diseases. This entire episode in American History is known as the “Trail of Tears”, named so by the Cherokee due to the tremendous loss of life. Not an advocate of paper money, Jackson grudgingly accepted the use of his likeness on the twenty dollars bill. I guess deep down inside he probably knew that he didn’t deserve it. Here is a man who owned slaves and killed Indians.

Since 1928, Americans of all races have carried Andrew Jackson in their pockets and purses. His monetary value seems to have overlooked the “high crimes and misdemeanors” that should have led to him being impeached from the White House. But, the “powers that be” that allowed him to stay in circulation for nearly 90 years have apparently had a change of heart. “Ole Hickory” will now be replaced by slave abolitionist, Harriett Tubman.

This development has bought out the ignorance of racists and uneducated people alike. Some say that “only presidents” should be allowed on U. S. currency forgetting that Ben Franklin and Andrew Hamilton never sat in that position; nor did Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea. But, “Harriett will be in your pockets” real soon.

There’s a major irony in this.

Andrew Jackson’s twenty dollar bill was in the pockets of racists, Klansmen, and bigots. Now, he’ll be replaced by a Black woman who led over 300 slaves to freedom. There’s an uproar throughout America where people are not pleased with this and I have a simple solution for their problems: If you don’t want Harriett in your pockets, just give her to me. I’ll be happy to take her off your hands. God bless, goodnight, and keep yo families together.

! Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated ~ Calvin Coolidge derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

THE UNSPOKEN DIVIDE AMONG AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEN

M

ake no mistake about it; there is a significant divide that exists between African-American men. In many ways it is amazing that the alluded to divide that cuts across areas such as educational level, socioeconomic status, political leanings, and religiosity/spirituality has not been commented upon more frequently.

On second thought, maybe it is not all that amazing when one considers that there is an unspoken agreement amongst AfricanAmerican males who have found themselves the target of every type of attack imaginable to not speak about our dirty laundry in public. Those who have wondered why such conversations have not been more prominent should be comforted by the reality that such matters are continuously discussed among ‘the brothers’.

At this late day and time, I find it impossible that we may have people who are ignorant to the plethora of issues facing AfricanAmerican males. African-American males are facing a bevy of issues such as: • Escalating Incarceration Rates • Declining Graduation Rates • Unparalleled Unemployment Rates • Unparalleled Divorce Rates • An Epidemic of Black Children being Raised without Fathers • School-to-Prison Pipeline • Prison Industrial Complex • Black-on-Black Lethal Violence • And the list could continue into infinity Despite these innumerable societal pitfalls that so many of ‘the Brothers’ have fallen into, there is a significant segment of AfricanAmerican men who have not

fallen prey to such ‘traps’ and have flourished in the same environment that has curtailed, if not destroyed, the lives of so many of their contemporaries.

To this population’s credit, they have stared down and in many ways overcome the pernicious evils that we know as prejudice, discrimination, and racism.

Unfortunately, the aforementioned success of some AfricanAmerican males over prejudice, discrimination, and racism serves as the catalyst behind the everwidening divide amongst Black males. This divide is best expressed

by New York City educator Damon Thomas who publicly questions his contemporaries regarding their inability to do the same. “Don’t get me wrong, I am well aware that racism still exists in today’s society.

However, I trace the ineptitude of Black Males to personal failings, poor decision-making, and a woeful absence of planning for their future.”

Thomas is most certainly not alone in his contentions, Columbus, Ohio businessman Eric Morris cites “laziness, foolishness, and silliness” as the actual reasons that so many African-American males are lagging behind educationally, politically, and socially. According to Morris, “There is no other explanation for why some of us have achieved a few things in our lives and others seem to be stuck in the same place. I simply refuse to wallow in pity and let life happen to me, I am the primary determinant in my success and also in my shortcomings and failures.”

Individuals such as Morris and Thomas have no problem with addressing the shortcomings of other African-American males for one simple reason. They realize that all persons of African descent, particularly African-American males, are inextricably linked with one another.

According to Thomas, “Although I hate to admit it, but when these brothers go out into the world and act a fool, it affects each and every one of us. Make no mistake about it; they have severely and permanently damaged what it means to be a Black man. Instead of blackness standing for intelligence, professionalism, and responsibility, these fools have made it stand for the exact opposite.”

Reporter Dan Freeman offered the following commentary regarding this matter. “Although I hate to admit it, I no longer view all ‘brothers’ as ‘brothers’, if you know what I mean. I simply can’t afford to. I really don’t think that anyone who wishes to accomplish anything has that luxury. I have been burned far too many times trying to help my ‘brothers’ out.

After a while, you simply decide that it is not worth it; I am certain that a little part of me died at that moment, however, I had to do what was best for me at that moment.”

Laying at the center of this rapidly expanding divide among African-American males is the realization that those to whom much has been given, the population that W.E.B. Du Bois would term our ‘talented-tenth’, have tired of dragging along and protecting brethren who behave as if they are not only oblivious to the perilous state that their life could be aptly characterized as, but also displaying copious amounts of anger and hatred at those who have offered a helping hand.

Little do they know, such assistance will become much and much more rare as we move forward.

Jarvis D. Johnson was born on September 27, 1971 into a family who was already a very vital part of the community in which he was reared. His mother, Cleo Johnson was a very close affiliate and co-laborer with the late and great Mickey Leland (also from Houston’s 5th Ward). And his father, Mister Larry Johnson is a graduate of Houston’s legendary Phyllis Wheatley Sr. High School, having a very rich presence in the area of news broadcasting.

And still, Mister Larry Johnson is an important part of the HBCU, Texas Southern University.

During his early years, growing up in the historical political district of 5th Ward, Jarvis attended a Catholic School (St. Francis) located in Kashmere Gardens’. When asked about what type of student he was in his early years, Jarvis jok-

ingly answered “Bad as hell!”

Although this may have been an over-statement, it is no surprise that a future politician would be an overly social busy body, as the same is true about most people who are later found to be “gifted” in one area or another. The fact is: it’s sometimes difficult for a small child to contain their gift of being extraordinary. But, by the time he became a teenager, Mister Jarvis Jonson had become more equipped to handle his pre-destined duties as a helper of the people.

When he was 16 years of age, his journey of servanthood had already begun. Under the mentorship of a man by the name of Reverend Robert Handy, Johnson was inspired to volunteer his time and efforts for the sake of people who were less fortunate than he was. In fact, also during his early teens, Johnson and his

sister Velika were two of the founding members of the Mickey Leland Youth Task Forces (MLYTF). This program was one that nurtured character development and encouraged the youths to concentrate on critical thinking.

In other words, they were focused more-so on “how to think” as opposed to “what to think”. The program also boosted its young participants to be active participants in life instead of merely being spectators.

“Ever since he was very young, Jarvis was a very sharp young man who was already heading up effort in helping the people of his community.” said Virtle Benet As a young man, he received a Bachelor’s degree from Texas Southern University. Yet, at the tender age of 22 (while he was still attending Texas Southern), he courageously accepted the task of becoming the Executive Director of the Phoenix Outreach Youth Center (POYC) where he says he grew immensely as a philanthropist. The story, as it was told to a reporter in recent days, was a very heartwarming one. “Reverend Robert Handy was in the hospital and he had asked to see me.” said Johnson. He then continued with his story: “Then, he started to tell me many things about the organization that I did not know...

He told me the tax ID number, the bank account information, and other important administrative information like that... and he told me to make sure I did a good job at the center... I didn’t understand the sense of urgency and finality, but Reverend Handy obviously did, because the very next day, I received a phone call with someone telling me that he had died... so basically, his dying wish was for me to carry the torch.”

According to Mister Jarvis Johnson, he had begun serving and volunteering at a very young age, because he was inspired by “good”, but by the time he had assumed the role as the Executive Director of the Phoenix Outreach Youth Center, he was inspired by “God”. And from there, things had begun to shift

in Jarvis’ favor. In fact, a woman by the name of Sarah Joseph had caught wind of what Jarvis was doing at the 5th Ward based organization and was thoroughly impressed by the zeal and actions of this young man. She reached out to Jarvis and asked him what he wanted and/or needed in order to further his endeavors. At that time he started to rattle off a list of small desires; pens, pencils, books, general supplies, and so on. But, the woman had to awaken him by saying “Jarvis, I’m with the Houston Rockets... Allow us to give you more than pencils and notepads.” And so – on behalf of the Phoenix Outreach Youth Center (POYC), he asked for a new house where all of the organization’s basic services could be facilitated. Accordingly, Miss Sarah Joseph and the Houston Rockets Organization graciously obliged.

Under those circumstances, Jarvis was about to be catapulted into an even more notable position in life. Not many years thereafter, he had resigned from his position as executive director and channeled his energy into being a full-time city council member for Houston’s District B. Preceded by Carol Mims Galloway, Jarvis Johnson held this position within the city of Houston for 6 years and was then succeeded by its current council member, Jerry Davis.

Yet and still, since early on, Johnson has personally adopted the motto of “Leading By Example” , and to date, he has done what appears to be an effortless job at leading by example.

From being a young volunteer, to being a full-time servant of the people, to now – being a successful business man; Mister Jarvis Johnson has done a fine job at leading by example.

Most recently though, his business, Aunt Bea’s restaurant, located at Tidwell and I-45, had been a favorite place for many patrons to go and enjoy savory southern dishes, except, it became engulfed in flames, not long ago.

It’s no surprise that the restaurant was a place where its customers could find awesome service, since its owner, Mister Jarvis Johnson, has spent the bulk of his life serving others. And as it pertains to the rest of his life, I’m certain that we can always count on Jarvis D. Johnson to be a servant of the people.

Note to Reader: On the 24th day of May 2016, we’ll have to VOTE 1 MORE TIME! With Kimberly Willis as his opponent, Jarvis D. Johnson is a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 139 of the Texas House of Representatives.

Lone Star College-Victory Center Star Student of the Month In fall 2013, Donald Johnson enrolled at Lone Star College-Victory Center to study criminal justice, while staying close to home and his cultural roots within the community.

He learned the difficulties of balancing college and life early on, stating, “I didn’t believe as a young man I could balance them, but I wasn’t going to let that deter me.”

Throughout his time at LSC-Victory Center, he has continued to mature. Donald attributes his growth to the men at LSC-Victory Center who inspired him to be a stronger person and student.

After graduating this summer, he plans to attend the University of Houston-Downtown, before enlisting in the U.S. Military.

Looking back, Donald said, “LSC-Victory Center and its staff has influenced me as a person and a young man. I am grateful for the experiences that I have had there, and I will carry them with me for a lifetime. I am so excited for the next part of my journey!”

He recalled instances where those that he encountered at LSC-Victory Center impacted his life in ways they will never know, such as Dr. Lassalle discussing his plans for the future and Dean Johnson taking the time to sit down and talk with him about life.

“I was having a really rough semester and one day overheard several Deans conversing about how challenging their master’s programs were, but if they could do it, anyone could. They don’t know this, but because of that conversation, I pulled my semester together and passed all of my classes,” added Donald.

$10 Million Available to Support Career Training Through Jobs and Education for Texans Grant Program

AUSTIN - The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) announced today the availability of $10 million in job-training funding from the Texas Legislature for the Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grant program during the 2016-17 biennium. This funding is for the purchase of equipment needed for use in career and technical programs that prepare students for high-demand jobs in Texas. Public community and technical colleges, and independent school districts are eligible to apply for the grants.

“As our students transition into the workforce, it is crucial that they have the appropriate education and skills they need for success in the workplace,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar.

“The JET program will give our students access to equipment that will better prepare them for high-demand careers.”

Qualifying educational institutions are awarded a grant for the development of programs or courses leading to a license, certificate or post-secondary degree. Priority is given to projects that target high-demand jobs in new or emerging industries.

“By providing JET funding to our schools, we are able to train our future workforce to meet employer demand for skilled labor,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs. “These grants keep our Texas businesses competitive and our economy growing.”

The JET program provides funding for equipment through a competitive grant process to eligible educational institutions for the purpose of developing career and technical education courses, and may include courses offering dual-credit. The equipment must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations.

“The JET grant program gives our educators the ability to expand or create pathways that support local in-demand jobs,” said Commissioner Representing Labor Julian Alvarez. “These investments help meet existing

and emerging needs in our communities, while creating opportunities for our students.”

Eligible educational institutions can apply for JET funding through a competitive grant process. TWC will issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) solicitation that will provide information and instruction on how to submit a proposal packet. A link will be provided on the TWC JET Grant Program webpage, which can be used to access the RFP Solicitation once it becomes available.

A JET Advisory Board has been established to assist TWC in administering these grants.

The newly appointed Advisory Board held its first meeting on April 27 in Austin. The six-member board will meet at least once each quarter, or as needed, to review applications and make recommendations on grant awards.

The Advisory Board consists of education and workforce stakeholders with one appointment from Texas offices of the governor, lieutenant governor, speaker of the House of Representatives, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and TWC. Additionally, the Chair of TWC will hold a statutory appointment and serve as the presiding officer. Appointees to the Advisory Board are as follows: Two-year terms expiring June 19, 2017 • Tony Fidelie, appointed by Governor Greg Abbott • Mario Lozoya, appointed by Lt. You Want To Stick That Where?: The Importance of Colorectal Cancer Screening In African Americans

PRAIRIE VIEW - Health Screening is looking for a disease before the person has symptoms.

Colorectal cancer screening is looking for precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum so they can be removed before they turn into cancer or finding cancer early so that the chance of being cured is good.

Facts about Colorectal Cancer Screening: • Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United States.

• Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer.

• Colorectal cancer is diagnosed more in African American men and women than any other racial group.

• People older than 75 years of age should ask their health care provider if they should be screened.

• People at higher risk of developing colorectal cancer should begin screening at a younger age and may need more frequent testing.

• People who have inflammatory bowel disease, a personal or family history of colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer, or genetic syndromes like familial adenomatous polyposis, or hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome) may have higher risk for colorectal cancer and need to start screening earlier than age 50.

• Symptoms of colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer may include blood in bowel movement, stomach pain/cramps that don’t go away or losing weight without a reason.

• Colorectal cancer screening using fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy should begin at age 50 years and continue until age 75.

Recommended Colorectal Rectal screening tests: Fecal occult blood test- This tests checks

for hidden blood in three consecutive stool samples. The stool collection is easy and usually does not require medical supervision. You may be asked to follow a special diet before taking this test. This test is done annually.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy- A physician will use a flexible, lighted tube (sigmoidoscope) to look at the inside of your rectum and a portion of the colon. The tube is small and usually causes little to no pain. You will not need to be put to sleep for testing. Your health care provider will tell you what foods you can and cannot eat before this test. You will use a strong laxative and/ or enema to clean out the colon on the evening before the test. Sigmoidoscopy is usually done every five years.

Colonoscopy- A physician will use a flexible, lighted tube (colonoscope) to look inside the rectum and entire colon. It will allow tissue samples to be collected if needed and is also a follow up test when other screening tests are unclear or abnormal. Your health care provider will tell you what foods you can and cannot eat before the test.

You will also use a strong laxative and/or enema to clean out the colon. Because of the sedative used, you must also arrange for a ride home. The test is usually done every 10 years.

Remember, your health care provider does not necessarily think you have cancer if they order a screening test. These tests are usually ordered when you have no cancer symptoms and may be repeated on a regular basis.

Colorectal rectal screening tests are covered by most insurance health plans. Fortunately, colorectal cancer is highly treatable if caught early enough. If you’re older than 50 or at risk for colorectal cancer, you should ask your health care provider about getting screened...it could save your life.

"Like most people, I knew something about AIDS and HIV, but I believed it could never happen to me. When a friend told me about the quick and confidential test offered by the African American Health Program, I decided it couldn't hurt. When the test came back positive, I was shocked. A counselor was available right then to help me. Ever since, the AAHP has continued to offer me information, referrals and support. I'm not saying it's been easy, but today I am living with confidence, with hope-and yes, with AIDS." HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It is the virus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS. HIV affects specific cells of the immune system, called CD4 cells, or T cells. Over time, HIV can destroy so many of these cells that the body can’t fight off infections and disease. When this happens, HIV infection leads to AIDS. Unlike some other viruses, the human body cannot get rid of HIV. This means that once you have HIV, you have it

for life. AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection.

It can take years to reach this stage.

One in 5 of the more than one million people living with HIV in the U.S. is unaware of his or her infection. HIV is passed from one person to another by: Having unprotected sex of any kind with a person who has HIV Sharing needles with someone who has HIV Getting a transfusion of blood that has HIV, which is rare in the United States Pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding, if the mother has HIV When compared with other races and ethnicities, African Americans account for a higher proportion of HIV infections at all stages of disease--from new infections to deaths. At some point in their lives, an estimated 1 in 16 Black men and 1 in 32 Black women will be diagnosed with HIV infection.

In 2010, an estimated 1 in 264 Montgomery County residents over age 13 was diagnosed with HIV. Though Black adults and adolescents comprise about 16% of the County’s population, they represent 66% of the diagnoses.

If you test positive for HIV, the disease can be managed so that you stay well, delay the onset of AIDS, and prevent some life-threatening conditions from emerging.

AAHP offers a variety of resources to help prevent and manage HIV/AIDS.

First Legacy Patient Tests Positive for Zika as Houston Flooding Boosts Mosquito Population

HOUSTON – Legacy Community Health, one of the nation’s largest community health centers, recently announced its first patient, a pregnant woman, testing positive for Zika virus. The woman had lived in El Salvador, where the virus is widespread, prior to coming to the U.S. earlier this year, but it’s not clear whether she contracted the virus directly through a mosquito bite in El Salvador or through sexual transmission with a male partner. Either way, the Centers for Disease Control has said definitively the virus can cause severe birth defects.

“We are closely monitoring the patient through her

pregnancy and hope for the best for mom and baby,” said Dr. Natalie Vanek, a Legacy Community Health infectious disease specialist. “Today we are re-issuing our advisory to pregnant women not to travel down to the Central and South American countries where the virus is rampant, and want to make the broader Houston community aware the virus can be transmitted sexually. We are focused on prevention, not panic.”

Last week, the CDC said sexual transmission “might contribute to more illness than was anticipated when the outbreak was first recognized.”

The guidance comes after a

couple in Dallas County–now known to be two men – became infected with Zika in January. It was the first report of transmission by men having sex with men, while previous sexual transmission focused on heterosexual couples.

Still, the focus remains on pregnant women. About 700 cases of Zika virus have been reported in the United States, including almost 70 pregnant women, according to the CDC. Legacy Community Health sees about 300 pregnant women a day, some of whom travel regularly to Latin America.

The Eagle’s Nest Newspaper GRADUATING CLASS OF 2016

The end of a school year is a time of celebration. Seniors have reached that monumental moment of graduating after four years of dedication, hard work, and endurance. Teachers are applauding all of their students’ hard work and effort that they have put towards their STAAR exams, and everyone is recuperating in order to prepare for an awesome summer before we do it all over again next school year. This past Friday however, the Seniors of Booker T. Washington High School gathered after school in order to celebrate their final Senior Night and say one last good bye to the school, administrators, and teachers who have supported them both academically and emotionally these last few years. “The tone of the event was nostalgic to say the least, but overall all of the students seemed excited to be moving into the next phase of their lives.” Said Ms. Antonelli an English teacher on campus. The Eagle’s Nest Newspaper wanted an exclusive of the event, and actual testimonials from the seniors. Taylor Brown, Ms. Booker T. Washington herself, seemed like the best candidate. On Monday April 25, 2016 we were able to sit down with Taylor, and get her perspective of the event.

Brown: “Senior Night was a really fun event, and I’m glad I got to be a part of it. It was sad though. All of those guys have been around and supported me for the past four years. It’s hard to imagine life without them.”

Walker: “That is understandable, but what will you miss the most about Booker T. Washington besides your friends?”

Brown: “My teachers were really impactful in my life. Mr. Taylor and Mrs. Castillo have really supported me applying to colleges, and writing letters of recommendation for me. Also, I

really respect Dr. Phillips, and everything he has done for our school. I have no doubt that he is going to take Washington High School where it needs to be.”

Walker: “Do you have any advice for the lower classmen about how to be a successful senior?”

Brown: “Yes, I want to tell all of them not to procrastinate and get their work done!”

Walker: “Last question, where are you attending college? And are you excited about this next step?”

Brown: “I have not quite decided where I’m going, but I have narrowed down to either the University of Houston or Dillard University. I am super excited though I know no matter where I go I will be successful.”

Walker: “Thank you so much for your time.”

The time the Seniors have put into their education at Booker T. Washington High School is a huge part of their legacy moving forward.

Like Taylor Brown commented leaving a school that feels more like a family is difficult, but it is because Washington High School supported these students so much so that it has enabled the 2016 Senior class to go forward and be successful!

Nytasha King interviewed Mr. Kent Jr. for a one time exclusive into the man behind the scenes here at Washington High School.

King: “When did you graduate from Booker T. Washington High School?”

Kent Jr: “I graduated from Washington High School in 1991.”

King: “In what way do you think Booker T. Washington High School has changed since Dr. Phillips has become the principal?”

Kent Jr: “I believe the students’ attitude and self-discipline will increase and that the students will take their education more seriously.”

King: “Did you ever expect to come back and teach at Washington?”

Kent Jr: “I did not expect to come back.

I was much more interested in the corporate world, and worked at Houston Methodist for fourteen years, but eventually I wanted a new career path so I started teaching third grade teacher. Eventually I knew I wanted to come back to Washington and be a part of its’ rich history.”

King: “What memories are most valuable to you from your experience here at Booker T. Washington High School.”

Kent Jr: “I admire the history of the school, and all of my memories here from school. My siblings graduated from Washington and my son graduated from Washington – we have a rich legacy here. It’s also given me the perspective to

Kent Jr: “I actually played basketball more than I played football when I attended BTW. I did not even begin playing football until half-way through my senior year, and coincidentally I received a scholarship to Baylor because of football.”

Texas Southern University’s KTSU Radio, 90.9 Adds to Line-Up & Programming

KTSU’s line-up, beginning at left, includes: Kim Burrell, Zoe Bonet, Noel Velasquez Val Wilson, Mike Caviel, and Sheldon T. Nunn

Texas Southern University Vice President for University Advancement Eva K. Pickens and KTSU Radio 90.9 FM General Manager Ernest Walker are announcing a new schedule line up, new shows and hosts at the university’s radio station. TSU students will have significant roles as hosts and interns at several levels at the campus radio station. The enhanced schedule and programming will begin on Monday, May 2.

KTSU 90.9 FM will remain Houston’s station for Jazz and continue to feature R&B Oldies, Blues, Gospel, Zydeco, Neo-Soul and Hip-Hop as well as a source for balanced coverage of current news, features and events.

Numerous other students will be involved in the research and production of various news and music segments as well as community outreach.

Also added to the line-up are names most listeners are familiar with, including multiple Grammy award nominee and Dove & Stellar award winner Kim Burrell, who will host her own show Bridging the Gap with Kim Burrell on Sunday’s from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. starting Sunday, June 5.

New shows added to the Monday through Thursday line-up are: Mornings with Mike and Val, Jazz by Design and Jazz Gems.

Mike Caviel and TSU communications professor Val Wilson, radio veterans, will host Mornings with Mike and Val Show from 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. The show will feature contemporary, smooth and fusion jazz along with R&B music as well as Caviel and Wilson’s candid delivery of the morning’s local news, features and information.

Donna Franklin will follow with, Jazz by Design from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. that will offer listeners smooth and contemporary jazz and featured “CD” debuts.

Zoe Bonet, formerly of Sunny 99.1, will make her debut at KTSU with Jazz Gems from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Listeners will enjoy a blend of smooth and contemporary jazz.

Other new shows include: The Blend – Monday’s, 10PM -2AM with Freddie Brown featuring a mixture of Jazz and Blues; The Blend – Tuesday’s, 10PM – 2AM with Deon Haywood featuring a mix of Jazz and R&B; The Blend – Wednesday’s, 10PM – 2PM with Ms. Melodic (Melanie Murphy) featuring a mixture of Jazz and Neo Soul; Throwback Jams - Friday’s, 10PM – 2AM with Maxie T (Maxie Tarver) and Chop Star Jimmy (Jimmy Jones) featuring Classic Hip Hop from the 70’s-90’s; and Classic R&B Countdown – Saturday’s, 9AM – 10AM with Tyrone Dubose featuring a syndicated show highlighting R&B Oldies.

To diversify its sound, KTSU 90.9 has added a Latin and Caribbean flair to its lineup.

Thursday night shows will now include Fiesta Nights with host Noel Velasquez from 6:00 p.m.

– 10:00 p.m., followed by Caribbean Vibes with hosts DJ’s Supa Neil (Everad Gill) and Uncle L (Leigh Johnson) from 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.

Fiesta Nights will feature a mixture of Latin Jazz and other Latin sounds while Caribbean Vibes will offer listeners Caribbean music as well as news and information from the Caribbean world.

Friday’s popular Blues programming will get a boost with the addition of DJ Chilly Bill Smith (Bill Smith) as the former Radio One DJ will join KTSU to host the 5 O’ Clock Blues Revue from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Sheldon T. Nunn, KTSU’s veteran Jazz aficionado, gets a promotion as Music Director/ Director of Community Engagement. Additional changes Walker has made since taking over as General Manger March 22, include radio personality Donna Franklin as Program Director.

The Gentle Giant (James Eaglin) host of the popular Golden Oldies; and ChattaBox (Lary Hale) of Classic Café will remain on Fridays at their regular time slots, 6AM – 10AM and 10AM – 2PM, respectively.

Dr. Chris Ulassi, chair, TSU Radio, Television and Film department in the School of Communication, will work in concert with KTSU to assist with student involvement in all aspects of radio, including teaching/learning and community interest. He loves the idea of a program that is a combination of music and current events.

“I feel that such a program will be of interest to a large audience because many people are not given the opportunity to talk about issues that are important to them,” Ulassi says.

Dr. Ulassi invited the students and KTSU to have a huge presence at this year’s Houston Igbo Festival, slated for July.

(The Kimberly Willis and Jarvis Johnson Showdown)

Tensions were high at Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where Rev. Dayle E. Perry is Pastor, as Kimberly Willis and Jarvis Johnson took center stage in a very intense debate. Passions were rising as each candidate fought hard to share their beliefs, political platforms, occasionally dissing one another, and throwing out facts that some people in the audience thought were untruths. Both candidates are fighting to be the next State Representative for District 139.

As intensity grew on stage, so did the anger in some of the members of the audience, especially in the family of Kimberly Willis. Heated moments between some audience members and her father, almost ended in a brawl, with comments being yelled out from her family in regards to some of the statements that were thrown out to the audience by Johnson, that they believed were just untruths. As the debate continued, yelling could be heard from the back hallway, which intensified, and eventually caused Willis to step off stage. She made it known to everyone that “my family comes first.” She made strides to make sure her family was okay, and someone from the audience immediately told her that they were fine. With that information, Willis made her way back to center stage and continued on with the debate.

Roy Douglas Malonson, who was the moderator, had to step in several times to not only calm the audience down, but to also keep tension down between the candidates, especially surrounding time allowed for responses to questions and time allowed for rebuttals. At the beginning of the debate, the rules were made known to everyone. Candidates were given one minute to respond to the questions they were asked from the panel and audience members, and thirty seconds for rebuttal. Johnson was frustrated several times with the given time restraints, and often went over his allotted time because he felt like the timekeeper was giving more time to his opponent. Due to this, compromises were eventually made between the panel, the moderator, the person in charge, and the candidates. This compromise extended the response time to a minute and a half, and the rebuttal time to forty-five seconds. With the extension of time, the candidates were able to adequately discuss their points about different issues in a little more detail.

Despite challenging tensions within the debate, critical issues that greatly affect the lives of many were discussed to the fullest extent. These issues ranged from; pension reforms, standardized testing, law enforcement, new and existing black businesses, Texas prisons, assistance for the elderly, preserving historical land, and lastly they discussed their personal beliefs and political platforms. Johnson made it known that we must “listen to those who have come before us, and deal with the issues of our community everyday.” Willis expressed how she wants to “improve the quality of life, and improve the communication within the community.”

It is important that African Americans get out and vote, as these issues directly affect our communities. Johnson, formerly known as City Council member for the City of Houston, Texas District B, confidently took the stage, as he expressed the issues that surround the African American communities.

These issues include; the unemployment rates, creating more jobs, economic development, building more houses, which will help bring more jobs, and improving the education system. Johnson expressed that having a leadership that understands the issues at hand is very important. He furthered stated that “the community is only as strong as its voters”, which is why African Americans must exercise their right to vote.

On the other side, his opponent, Willis stressed that there is a huge gap in the community of “people who don’t know what is going on, and those who do know what’s going on in the community.”

She would like to bridge this gap, and make sure that everyone is aware of what is going on around him or her. Furthermore, she also wants to improve our education systems, increase home ownership, help regulate our prison systems, build a relationship of trust within the community, while building up the community we already have. If elected, both candidates made it known that diversity will be represented within their staff. Johnson stated, “you have to have people in your community who understands where your community comes from.” Willis also expressed that a lot of her current staff is from the African American community, and if elected, diversity will be found in her staff as well. Both candidates are also aware of the shoes that they must fill. Former State Representative Sylvester Turner, now Mayor of the City of Houston, Texas, did a phenomenal job representing our community in the past for more than twenty-five years, and both candidates made it known that they are willing to step up, and be the leader that our community needs and deserves.

The election is not too far away, and one of the most important issues surrounding the African American community is that we simply don’t get out to vote! Your vote is your voice! If you don’t vote, then you can’t complain about the issues that surround our community. Not only did our ancestors fight and die so that we may have this right, but it is equally important that we elect the right person to represent our community, as this person will be in control over what happens to our future, the future

of our kids, and their kids. Furthermore, whoever is elected, must be held accountable to what it is that they said they were going to do.

Action will always speak louder than words.

Johnson stated, “Don’t wait for someone to do something for you, do for yourself.” With that being said, we must do for our community by expressing our right to vote! Our future depends on it! Early voting begins May 16th through May 20th, and the main Election Day is May 24th, 2016. Who will you vote for?
