“DON’T RAISE YOUR CHILDREN TWICE” Before I Lay it Down...

The hardest thing for parents to do is to “let go” of their children. Yes, they’re our babies and yes, we’ve raised them since birth, but you gotta realize when it’s time to let your children live their own lives. Let me explain: Do you remember when us grown folk couldn’t wait to “get out of the house”? Back in the

day it was customary for parents to kick kids out of the proverbial “nest”. Children were encouraged to take their “wings” and fly. It was hard for parents to send their kids on their way, but, they knew if a young man/woman were to be successful in life, they first must let go of their mom’s “aprons” and move on out in the world. That is what parenting is all about; preparing your kids for life. Parents really don’t know what to expect from children when they leave, but here are some things that you should expect: (1.) Don’t expect your children to call you every day. They

won’t. It doesn’t mean that they don’t love you or think about you often, it just means that they’re trying to find their niche in life.

Sometimes that takes a little longer than what parents expect seeing how we forget how long it took us to hit our adulthood stride.

(2.) Don’t get mad if your kids don’t “turn out” they way you expected them to. That is what uniqueness is all about. They have to find out who they are and it might just be possible that they will not be like you.

(3.) Don’t be too surprised if your child(ren) get into a little trouble or do some things you never would have imagined in the process of learning life. Yes, we

may have been pretty good role models and saved Christian folk, but our kids are the ones who will test our mettle when it comes to patience and/or temperament.

You have to let kids figure it out by themselves. Just don’t give up on them.

(4.) Don’t be too disappointed if your kids don’t measure up to the high bar you have set for them. Maybe YOUR expectations are too damn high or too damn unreasonable for them. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to have high standards and it’s good to push/ prepare yo kids for success, but, let them obtain it at their own pace.

(5.) And finally, don’t get too anal if your kids don’t show you

the appreciation you feel you deserve for carrying them for nine months or raising them the best way you could. Life is like that sometimes and kids tend to be a little ungrateful, especially those who were spoiled or given more than what they should have been given. Life has a way of balancing things like this out. They’re called: “grandkids”.

In closing, don’t try to raise your kids twice. Stay out of their business and only give them sound advice when they insist upon on it. Don’t pry, don’t imply, and don’t cry. You’ve raised them right. Let them figure the rest out by themselves. God bless, good night, and keep yo families together.

to raise money for the Democratic candidates and incumbents, putting volunteer and paid professional boots on the ground for their campaigns, and mounting an all-out get out the vote blitz in the weeks leading up to the election to put Democrats locally and nationally over the top.

This takes a well-oiled, wellcoordinated ground game to put as many Democrats as possible in Congress and to keep the ones who are there there. That’s a more than full-time job. There’s no room for a part-timer and especially a part-timer who remains under fire within and without her own party for ineptness, incompetence and blatant Clinton favoritism, and is locked in a hotly contested Democratic primary race to keep her own Florida congressional seat.

The Republican National Committee chairman by contrast holds no office, and spends every moment on planning, fundraising and strategizing ways for the GOP to hold onto its seats and take seats away from Democrats.

The swelling criticism of Wasserman Schultz and the loud and persistent demands for her ouster as DNC chair aren’t simply being shouted because of her miserable track record at getting Democrats elected and reelected in 2014, or for incompetence. It’s because the

opportunity for Democrats to reverse the hideous losses of 2014 are so great.

The GOP has to defend 24 senate seats, while the Democrats only have to defend 10. The Democrats can wrest back the Senate with a mere swing of five senate seats. This is huge. It would give a President Clinton or Sanders a fighting chance to get their agenda on the Congressional table and get a fair hearing of it. It would also potentially damp down some of the no holds barred obstructionism, bitterness and rancor that hamstrung Obama in dealing with Congress for nearly every waking moment that he’s been in office.

In one telling moment, Obama reminded Schultz that the DNC post was not about her, but as he put it, “Don’t forget you work for me.”

That’s true at least in part. The part being that Obama put her in her DNC head post, and that means that he can take the lead in removing her.

So far, he has remained silent at least publicly on Schultz’s fate. But with so much riding on this election for the Democrats, it’s hard to figure just how or even why Obama would not want to intervene while there’s still a chance to make a difference this campaign.

The need for Obama to take action fast is underscored by the

very thing that should have set off the loudest alarm bells among Democratic party officials and the White House. That’s the gaping disparity between the GOP and Democrats in voter turnout in the primaries. The gap is not in the tens of thousands but millions.

The GOP is energizing its base like hasn’t been done in years, as well as firing up lots of young persons who in years past would likely not have been caught dead voting for a GOP presidential candidate.

Two months before the 2014 midterm elections, President Obama issued this statement that read in part: “The president’s foremost political goal is helping Democrats do well in the midterms -and Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is doing a great job in that effort.”

Obama was horribly disappointed in his first wish and horribly off in the second in complimenting Wasserman Schultz. The midterm losses for the Democrats were nothing short of catastrophic. The GOP took back the Senate, tightened its grip on the House, and increased its dominance of local state legislatures and state houses nationally.

The blame finger squarely pointed at the same Wasserman Schultz that Obama had showered with fulsome praise in the months before the debacle. And rightly so.

HOW BLACK WOMEN CAN HELP MAKE A BLACK MAN Manhood, Race & Culture

I recently came across an interview of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan that was not only interesting, but also filled with sound advice regarding how African-American women can help African-American men flourish in today’s world.

Now I am fully aware that the name Louis Farrakhan has stirred up a host of ugly charges such as antiSemitic, racist, religious charlatan and the list goes on and on. Despite what others feel about Minister Farrakhan, there is little doubt that he and the men within the Nation of Islam, particularly the Fruit of Islam, have continually displayed one of the most impressive images of manhood that the African-American community has ever witnessed.

Despite what many would like to think, the development of Manhood is nearly a scientific process that includes a host of ingredients.

According to a recent interview given

by Farrakhan, one of the most important ingredients in the development of strong Black men are the contributions of Black women.

In response to a question regarding his wife and her role in his development, Minister Farrakhan responded in the following way.

When you have a woman by your side who does everything she can to support you in your work, and as a wife, to speak to you when you need correcting or to make it clear to you where she is dissatisfied, but always in a loving and respectful way, that is what helps a man to be a man.

As always, Minister Farrakhan’s words are efficient and packed with tons of insight and wisdom. Far too often we hear a familiar lament from many African-American women that goes as follows: “Where are the men?”

Far too often there is a misunderstanding regarding the ‘development’

of Manhood, most are unaware that the process is on-going throughout a man’s entire life. Now there are males who have no desire to become men. This editorial is not intended for them. for all intents and purposes, they should be considered a lost cause and traitors to the cause of racial uplift. Put simply, they do much more damage than one could ever imagine for the race.

I am referring to those who desire the cloak of manhood. It is this population that our women should focus upon because they provide her a path to display one of her greatest powers; propelling her man to unconscionable heights that he could have never achieved without her aid.

I only wish that more sisters found quality male’s with the desire to be strong Black men so that they could implement Minister Farrakhan’s advice and ‘do everything she can to support him in his work’, ‘address him, in a respectful and loving way, regarding matters he is incorrect upon and could improve upon’. According to Minister Farrakhan, that is how ‘sisters’ could help the Black man be a man.

I can personally attest to the damage that a non-cooperative partner can have upon one’s life, it is stifling and suffocating. Instead of cooperation, they intentionally create moments of discord, rather than speaking in a respectful and loving manner, they say things that are intentionally designed to incite an uncontrollable rage. Put simply, many ‘relationships’ within our community are combative and therefore far from loving and supportive. Amazingly we are then surprised when our home’s, the building bloc of any nation, lay in ruin.

I am quite certain that there are many brothers who are currently imbued with a sense of pride and righteousness as they perceive this to be a backhanded slight at the ‘sisters’, they are in as much error as the ‘sisters’ who have allowed their expectations that this is a ‘typical’ post aimed at disrespecting them to override their engagement with it.

THE SPILT IN THE BLACK VOTE

“By now most of the political pundits have had their say, and have waxed eloquently about the winds of political war which wafted over our city, gathering the entire electorate in its grasp.

In concise terms, the failure of many black candidates to win election in the democratic primary was the togetherness in the predominately white precincts, versus the split vote in those precincts with a black majority.

It would be the height of naiveté to even intimate that the vote was not divided along racial lines-at least as far as the non-white segment is concerned. A look at the comptroller’s race gives some good indication John Douglass received 73 percent of the vote n predominately black precincts. His opponent, Hyman Pressman garnered 27 percent in the AFRO precincts. This was enough to guarantee a win, for the remaining precincts were overwhelmingly in favor of Pressman.

These then are some of the facts, and point up once again that a house divided cannot stand.

This is not sour grapes. There is no rancor over the results of the election, for indeed it serves as an eye-opener and guide for future campaign objectives.

The plea for unity becomes more necessary if there is to be progress. If blacks are ever to exercise clout they possess merely by being the largest population group, then banding together must become the overall theme.

The split in the black vote hurt the black community-but also showed them the way to go. Let the hatchet that split the community be the one that is buries-and together, the black community can and will move forward.”

Carl Murphy (1889-1967) EditorPublisher (1922-1967) It is important to note and quite telling indeed that the above analysis was made of the political consequences of the lack of Black unity in the electorate over 32 years ago. That the Black vote split and was divided while the other ethnic communities were virtually homogenous in their vote was decried as the cause of Black political impotency seems altogether forgotten in today’s modern time as the same disunity again leaves the Black community leaderless and politically powerless. I believe that certain political races that directly affect our community, should be analyzed by community leaders, and recommendations made to potential candidates and voters, so as not to dilute the strength of the Black community’s vote.

The recent race in the democratic primary for the seat of Justice of the Peace in Precinct 1, Place 1 is a prime example. In this race, the Black vote, percentage wise, is the largess numerical demographic.

As a block, this vote can win any election or at least compel a runoff against any opponent. However the “split” again spelled the doom of our community, if Black representation was ever a desired reality. Two Whites competed for and received the bulk vote in the White community and the Hispanic surnamed candidate won the precincts of the predominately Hispanic community. Yet, for some reason, four different Black candidates ran for and competed for the same block of votes in the

precincts with the overwhelming Black majority. Coupled with the fact that numerous Black political operatives openly supported and worked for a White candidate in the Black community, the Black vote was split as many as five ways. As a result no Black candidate made the runoff and the influential Black vote now becomes the sought after prize of the White and Hispanic candidate. Needless to say, of the Black candidates, there was an abundance of experience and qualifications, lest one say that the Black community should not vote based on skin color alone. In fact one Black candidate had more experience and training for the job that all of the other candidates combined, and is in fact a Judge, yet failed to even make the runoff.

Now, one from outside of our community will again run the court at the Mickey Leland Building, named after our esteemed deceased political pioneer, George “Mickey Leland”, and placed in our community to serve this area.

We can only hope for fairness and concern, while we had the opportunity to place one of our own in the position.

Abraham Lincoln stated that a “House divided against itself cannot stand and this phrase was coined after the scripture in the Gospel of Mark 3:25 where Jesus says, “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand”.

The words of Abraham Lincoln and Jesus ring as hollow today as they did in Baltimore, 32 years ago. When will we learn?

BPCCA Boots & Diamonds Dance

HUMBLE - For 17 consecutive years, the Black Professional Cowboys and Cowgirls Association (BPCCA) has hosted the Annual Heritage Day Rodeo. Cowboys, cowgirls and people from all walks of life travel far and near to witness and participate in this splendid celebration. Not only is “Heritage Day” a community event, but it embraces and promotes the idea of cohesive family unity. The theme of this grand occasion is designed to stress emphasis on, “the importance of remembering cultural heritage and serves to strengthen family traditions”. The event was held at the Humble Civic Center located at 8233 Will Clayton Parkway, 77338. The Annual “Heritage Day” celebration is divided into three different compartments. They include: the Black “Heritage Day” Rodeo (which features an umbrella of athletic rodeo activities), concerts (performed by Rhythm and Blues and Zydeco singers) and an exposition phase which consists of: games, rides, art and crafts, southern eateries and a zone specifically engineered for children.

The sports and games that are demonstrated at the “Heritage Day” event are designed to allow the younger population of the community, to grasp a slight idea of what it was like to be a cowboy or cowgirl in the early days.

BPCCA also hosts a, “Boots and Diamonds” dance which jumpstarts their yearly celebration in the month of January. Much like, “Heritage Day”, the dance is an annual tradition when family and friends gather together in celebration and fun. It is initiated on New Year’s Day. Cowboys, cowgirls and helpful supporters join in to enjoy.

In reference to “Heritage Day”, Dwight Judge the founder of the association expressed that it proved to be an ultimate success. Judge founded BPCCA in 1999 and has been actively hosting several events throughout each year since.

In regards to this year’s festivities, he said, “We want to thank all of our participants and fans who came out to support the 17th Annual “Heritage Day” event.” “It was a record-breaking event for us, we had a terrific crowd”, he continued. Judge is passionate about the rodeo and the symbolism

that the events stand for. “Black cowboys are an important part of our past, present and future,” Judge said. “We strive to keep the legend alive and growing.”

Lastly, Judge stated that they appreciate the support from the community because the funds received go towards their scholarship fund.

“Supporting Education” is the mission that BPCCA subscribes to. According to BPCCA’s official website their purpose is to, “Create awareness and recognition for African- American men and women who have made significant contributions in the African-American community.”

One of the primary goals of the organization is to maintain a College Scholarship Fund by hosting fundraising events throughout the year. Every year, BPCCA hosts a banquet which disperses these funds through scholarships for graduating seniors in high school to attend an accredited four-year university.

To date, the association has been successful in distributing 142 scholarships which amount to over $100,000, thus far. In addition to awarding scholarships BPCCA also honors outstanding “Trailblazers” within the community. So far, 31 distinguished African-American leaders of the community have been chosen to receive the “Trailblazer” award. The esteemed honor is one that acknowledges, “a person or organization that has demonstrated leadership and dedication in helping improve the plight of the AfricanAmerican community.”

Last year, one of the “Trailblazer” award recipients was Percy Creuzot III (King), owner of the successful family-owned chain restaurant that has a rich history which dates back to 1969.

Percy “King” Creuzot, III, is the son of Percy “Frenchy” Creuzot. “Frenchy” is the pioneer of the taste that originated in Third Ward on Scott Street, but has swept through the city offering its infamous New Orleans-style chicken and southern cuisine.

An exciting transformation is underway, one that has already started to elevate Houston Community College to a new standard of excellence and a model for community colleges nationwide. As we continue down this road of change, we want to share the status of our positive momentum: how far we have come, what we are doing, and the direction in which we are headed for our students, businesses and community.

Over the last year, we have streamlined operations to make it easier to work with the college, revolutionized the student experience and fundamentally reshaped how we work with businesses and industry partners. Although this level of change takes time – especially with an institution of this scale – the early results speak volumes and show real promise for our college and community in the years ahead.

HCC is among the top community colleges in the nation for preparing students for jobs and universities. We continue to work on new innovations, to scale our partnerships and results, and to rethink our approach – necessary steps for all highperforming organizations. We recognize the changes in technology, business, and society, and we are constantly adapting to help prepare our students for an everchanging world.

This strategy has enabled us to make significant progress in improving the student experience before, during and after their time with us — as well as helping them secure higher paying jobs and entrance into the universities they want to attend.

Highlights of this transformation in 2015 included: •

Graduating 22% more students than the previous year.

•

Receiving the prestigious award for Excellence in Governmental Financial Reporting, the 2015 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award, recertification as an Achieving the Dream Leader College, and national recognition for our graduation rates.

•

Paving the way for a Board of Trustees vote this past January that was unanimously approved for a first-of-its-kind plan to waive the out-of-district fees for Dual Credit students. Starting this fall, this will allow high school students from all districts to attend HCC at no charge.

•

Obtaining an award from the U.S. Department of Labor for $4.2 million to fund apprenticeship programs in Healthcare, IT industries and plumbing occupations.

•

Earning a revised outlook from Moody’s Investors Service on the HCC system to stable and wan upgrade on the Junior Lien debt, which reflects a strong management team and the projection of continued operating health.

•

Establishing many new and innovative partnerships with leading companies and organizations, such as Wells Fargo Bank, the Robert Garner Firefighter Foundation, engineering departments at University of Texas at Tyler and Texas A&M University, San Jacinto College, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Jones County Junior College for an Upstream/ Midstream Skill Training and Safety Collaboration, the Houston Area Construction Education Collaborative with Lone Star College, San Jacinto College and the Houston Airport System, and The Greater Houston Partnership for UpSkill Houston.

Despite our many accomplishments, our transformation is a journey and there is much more work to do. We are Houston’s community college, and we are committed to becoming even better in all that we do and all that we offer.

To achieve our vision, we will continue to push the boundaries and dare greatly, focusing on the need to ensure quality instructional programs and courses, increase student retention and persistence rates, service high demand fields through skills training and credentialing programs, and improve the student experience.

We understand the pivotal role we play in helping the people in our community obtain vital education and necessary skills and in supporting the businesses that drive our economy. In fact, our economic impact hits on local, regional and state levels in a major way. Last year, HCC and its students added $3.4 billion in income to the service-area economy.

Understanding the Law: Alternatives to Probating a Will

When a person passes without a Will, they often leave their family and friends in a state of confusion as to how to dispose of their personal property and real estate. Attempting to pay burial expenses and estate debts can be very costly and frustrating when you are unable to access the bank account of the Decedent. In addition, paying taxes on a home or trying to refinance a home can be very difficult if no one will give you information because your name is not on the deed.

These are common occurrences when a loved one passes, but the law provides for alternatives to probating a will that allow you to handle the affairs of a deceased loved one.

AFFIDAVIT OF HEIRSHIP An Affidavit of Heirship is generally used when someone dies without a Will and has left real estate. To have title to the property transferred to the Decedent’s heirs, the heirs can

file an affidavit of heirship in the deed records of the county in which any piece of real estate owned by the Decedent is located.

The affidavit must be signed by all the heirs and two disinterested witnesses (two people that knew the Decedent and his family history but do not stand to gain financially from the estate).

TRANSFER ON DEATH DEED An alternate way to transfer real property to someone else upon the death of the Decedent is to have the Decedent execute a Transfer on Death Deed. The deed allows the owner to keep the exact same rights to the property that they’ve always had while they are alive, but in the event of their death the property will automatically transfer to a designated beneficiary.

Huston-Tillotson University Qualifies for Prestigious Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National

AUSTIN - Huston-Tillotson University has qualified to compete at the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) National Championship Tournament, a prestigious competition that showcases the academic prowess of the brightest students from America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Forty-eight student teams have qualified for this year’s National Championship Tournament, which will run from Saturday, April 2nd through Monday, April 5th in Torrance, CA. Approximately 76 HBCUs vied for a spot at the Nationals. After seven qualifying tournaments held in early February, 48 emerged from the group, earning the opportunity to compete for the title of “National

Champion” and a $50,000 institutional grant from Honda. Team HT is comprised of Captain Andranique L. Green, Lynn G. Nanjala, Darrion Jemerson, and Olivia Thomas.

Dr. Alaine S. Hutson, Associate Professor of History, is the coach.

Green and Nanjala are returning members and Joshua Jones competed on the team during the qualifying rounds.

Dr. Archie W. Vanderpuye named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

AUSTIN - It is with pleasure that we announce the appointment of Dr. Archie W. Vanderpuye as HustonTillotson University’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

“Dr. Vanderpuye has a proven record of student success that reflects the University’s student centric focus,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Colette Pierce Burnette. “His leadership aligns with the future direction of the University that includes solidifying our status as the intellectual heartbeat of East Austin.”

Dr. Vanderpuye joined HT in 2011 as the Associate Provost where he utilized his scholarly expertise to strengthen existing academic programs and create systems to ensure student persistence.

Dr. Vanderpuye’s positions at HT also included Interim Dean of Enrollment Management and Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Before joining HT, Dr. Vanderpuye served as Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of Retention and Intervention at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. Under his leadership at HT, he increased the fall to fall first-time freshman retention rate from an average of 50% to 56% over the past three years and created a spring semester Freshman Seminar course which contributed to an all-time high 72% spring-to-fall firsttime freshman retention rate.

In addition, he streamlined the faculty approval process for teaching online courses in preparation to offer fully online programs and is revising and implementing policies to ensure compliance with state and federal policies and regulations to advance the University. He also provided oversight of the implementation of the Masters of Education program and a successful Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) program review onsite visit.
