DRASTIC & MUCH NEEDED CHANGE COMING TO HARRIS COUNTY CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
For far too long, racial disparities within America’s criminal justice system were a given; meaning that African-Americans would be incarcerated at a much higher rate than any other group. Unfortunately for African-Americans, it has always been this way in the land of the free and the home of the brave. The legions of African-American protest groups who have taken the issue of racial disparities in America’s criminal justice system have been frustrated beyond measure by law enforcement agencies and governmental officials’ refusal to even speak about this matter in a substantive manner. Law enforcement personnel and Judges only commitment appears to this issue appears to have been an unwavering commitment to locking away more and more AfricanAmericans, regardless of the offense or the catalyst behind their criminal activity. Make no mistake about it, not only are African-Americans being incarcerated at rates that far exceed their percentage of the general population, but also there are seemingly endless consequences for this population, particularly Black men, who become entangled in the American penal system. Scholar and activist Michelle Alexander believes that this issue is made exponentially worse by an unforgiving American populace that is quick to judge others and offer forgiveness at a snail’s pace. Alexander terms the wholesale incarceration of AfricanAmerican men as The New Jim Crow.
