Long-Term Unemployment

Recently, I delivered my State of the Union address. And I said what while the economy is getting stronger -- and businesses like yours have created more than 8 million new jobs over the past four years, our unemployment rate is lower than it’s been in over five years -- we all know we’ve still got a lot more to do to build an economy where everybody who is willing to work hard and take responsibility can get ahead. We’ve got to do more to restore opportunity for every American.

And the opportunity agenda I laid out begins with doing everything we can to create new jobs here in America -- jobs in construction and manufacturing; jobs in American innovation and American energy. There are steps we can take to streamline our tax code, to incentivize companies to invest here. There are things that we can do to make sure that we are continuing to

lead the world in innovation and basic research. We’ve got a whole lot of infrastructure we can build that could put people to work right away. We’ve got a couple trillion dollars’ worth of deferred maintenance in America, and the ramifications of us taking that on would be significant. So we’ve got to grow faster and put more shoulders behind the wheel of expanding economic growth.

Step two is making sure that every American has the skills to fill those jobs. Step three, we’ve got to guarantee every child access to a world-class education, from early childhood to college to a career. And step four, we’ve got to make sure that hard work pays off -- with wages you can live on, savings you can retire on, health insurance that’s there for you when you need it.

We’re here to focus on that second point: connecting more ready-to-work Americans with

ready-to-be-filled jobs, so that folks who are out of work can apply the skills that they’ve already got. And getting people back on the job faster is one of our top priorities. But I have to confess, last month, Congress made that harder by letting unemployment insurance expire for more than a million people.

And each week that Congress fails to restore that insurance, roughly 72,000 Americans will join the ranks of the long-term unemployed who have also lost their economic lifeline.

And for our fellow Americans who have been laid off, through no fault of their own, unemployment insurance is often the only source of income they’ve got to support their families while they look for a new job. So when Erick was out of work, it’s a lot harder to look for work if you can’t put gas in the gas tank, if you’re worried about whether there’s food on the table for your kid. Victims of Homicide Due to Gun Violence

There are no words to express the horror of the senseless violence today at a place that should be a safe place of learning. My heart aches as a parent and someone who visits my local universities and interacts with the students and it is hard to think

of what the family of the victim must be going through. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victim of this tragedy and I know everyone will come together to help the community in this time of need. It is now time to move past gun special interest and make gun laws to protect our children who are the most vulnerable.

For over 10 years in many sessions of Congress I have introduced the HR 227, the Child Gun Safety and Gun Access Prevention Act. I have been an advocate for more gun safety laws in America since I have arrived here in Congress. In one year on average, almost 100,000 people in America are shot or killed with a gun. Over a million people have been killed with guns in the United States since 1968.

U.S. homicide rates are 6.9 times higher than rates in 22 other populous high-income countries combined, despite similar nonlethal crime and violence rates.

In order to promote safety for our children it is imperative this Congress brings to the House floor NOW the following gun safety laws: 1. An immediate ban on all assault weapons 2. The closing of the gun show loopholes 3. A more structured mental health support system for families that will allow them to get immediate assistance in regards to mental issues. There should be some pathway in which families can acknowledge mental issues within their family and seek public funded or private counseling services immediately.

4. Expanding state laws holding adults responsible for securing their weapons.

This Congress must rise above partisan politics and now come together to pass important gun safety laws. The safety of America should be at the forefront when it comes to making these gun safety laws. The

her phone bill, it’s a lot harder for her to follow up with a potential employer. Unemployment insurance provides that extra bit of security so that losing your livelihood doesn’t mean you lose everything that you’ve worked so hard to build. And that’s true whether you’ve been out of work for one month or six months.

But folks who have been unemployed the longest often have the toughest time getting back to work. It’s a cruel Catch-22 -– the longer you’re unemployed, the more unemployable you may seem. Now, this is an illusion, but it’s one that unfortunately we know statistically is happening out there. According to one study, if you’ve been out of work eight months, you’re likely to get called back for an interview only about half as often as if you’ve been out of work one month -- even with the identical résumé. So we are here tonight to say that’s not right -- because we know there are folks like Erick, all across this country, politics of outside groups like the NRA should not play a factor when we consider the safety of our citizens. We must also look at gun violence in other cities too such as Chicago where over the last few years a number of school age kids have been killed with guns.

If there is even one step we can take to save another child, or another parent, or another town, from the grief that has visited Tucson, and Aurora, and Oak Creek, and Oregon and Newtown, and communities from Columbine to Blacksburg, Purdue University and now Palm Bay campus of Eastern Florida State College -- then this Congress surely has an obligation to try. In 1965, the Supreme Court decided Griswold v. Connecticut, which held that access to contraceptives is a constitutionally protected right and, along with the landmark 1973 decision in Roe v.

Wade, helped secure the right for women to make private reproductive decisions.

But they need a chance.

I invited Misty DeMars to my speech on Tuesday night.

A mother of two young boys, she’d been steadily employed since she was a teenager, put herself through college, had never collected unemployment benefits, never depended on the federal government -- extraordinarily impressive young woman.

When she lost her job to budget cuts, she couldn’t find another, she turned to unemployment insurance to make sure she and her husband could keep the new home they had just spent their life savings to buy.

Edit rial & Opini n No Time for Delay Rev. Al Sharpton President, National Action Network

A leader does more than just inspire. A true visionary not only identifies challenges and lays out his/her tangible solutions, but moves people to action.

Recently, President Obama did precisely that during his State of The Union address. In a speech that can only be described as unifying, inclusive, honest and optimistic, the president outlined both our progress and our remaining tasks ahead. It was a masterful address comprised of the right energy and enthusiasm on our continued road to recovery. The President laid down the framework; now it’s up to us to hit the pavement and carry that message through. One man cannot do it alone. If we care at all about the current state of our union, then we must work together to shape the future state of our union.

“Today, after four years of economic growth, corporate profits and stock prices have rarely been higher, and those at the top have never done better,” said the President. “But average wages have barely budged.

Inequality has deepened. Upward mobility has stalled. The cold, hard fact is that even in the midst of recovery, too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by, let alone to get ahead. And too many still aren’t working at all. So our job is to reverse these trends. It won’t happen right away, and we won’t agree on everything. But what I offer tonight is a set of concrete, practical proposals to speed up growth, strengthen the middle class and build new ladders of opportunity into the middle class.”

From income inequality and jobs, to immigration, voting rights and gender equality, the president outlined key issues that need our immediate attention.

Democracy isn’t a passive form of governing; it requires us all to raise our voices, vote, reach out to our representatives, organize and rally around issues that impact us every single day. We’ve had enough of the punditry, enough of both progressives and right-wingers acting like they are the smartest people in the room.

It’s time for the public -- for the people -- to get informed, educate their neighbors, register to vote, help others register and elect representatives that care more about repairing society than advancing their own careers.

Whether it’s making sure the minimum wage is increased, comprehensive immigration reform is passed, women’s rights protected, voter equality expanded and preserved, we must be the advocates for the change which we want to see in this world. A single individual cannot do everything -- not even the president. Progress will only be achieved through the executive office and with action in the streets and in the suites of America. We must get to work immediately. Those who continually obstruct the president and obstruct equality do not rest, and neither should we. Every moment they plot and plan new schemes to divide us and regress society; we need to spend every moment strategizing ways to heal and advance us all.

Over the past several years, my organization, National Action Network, has been heavily involved with key civil rights issues like pushing back against harsh new voter ID laws, fighting on behalf of victims of police brutality, organizing gun buyback programs and education tours, advocating for community empowerment and more.

Black Women Hold the Keys to Inspiring Change

he Black woman defines the meaning of inspiration. Her contributions to African-American history have been demonstrated through her powerful spirit and her determination to survive and endure despite hardships that included everything from slavery to single parenthood.

I will break down her contributions in several ways to help all men know why she deserves honor and respect for her role as stabilizer of the family and director of the futures of all her offspring.

We MUST Understand that history shows her role as a special jewel who has the power to stimulate the will to achieve and motivates others in the Black community to action. Like Rosa Parks whose steadfastness started a movement that changed America's attitude towards segregation and civil rights.

On December 1, 1955, when Rosa Parks was riding a bus home from her job, the bus filled up, and she was expected to relinquish her seat for a white man. She refused, was arrested for violating Alabama's segregation laws. Mrs. Parks strong will mobilized a black community to do a boycott of the bus system which lasted for 381 days and resulted in the ending of segregation on Montgomery's buses.

We MUST Understand her motherly inspiration affects, guides and arouses all she influences and her power is reflected in the lives of those she touches in the Black family and community. Mrs. Willie Barrow was raised in rural Texas on a farm with her six siblings. Her father was a local pastor.

She was called to ministry when she was sixteen. While studying ministry in Portland, Oregon, she organized the first African American Church of God. She was also a welder in a shipyard, where

she met Clyde Barrow, whom she married, and where she became involved in the labor movement.

In the 1950’s she became active in the civil rights movement, working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as a field organizer for marches and demonstrations. She also helped found Operation Bread Basket and Operation PUSH. We MUST Understand her vital role as mother and teacher in being the source of human energy and ideas that help stimulate and bring about change with purpose in the Black community. Mary McLeod Bethune improved educational opportunities for African-Americans. She also served as a New Deal government official in one of the 20 highestlevel offices held by women in the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt - the highest held by an African-American woman.

She played a key role in founding FDR's "Black Cabinet" and also served as president of the National Association of Colored Women, and founded and served as president of the National Council of Negro Women.

We MUST Understand that the positive energy Black woman possess that stimulates our race with new thinking, ideas and nurtures leadership among the people. Shirley Chisholm ran for Congress from Brooklyn, winning that seat while running against James Farmer, a veteran of the 1960’s Freedom Rides in the south.

She thus became the first Black woman elected to Congress. She hired only women for her staff. She was known for taking positions against the Vietnam war. She also work on minority and women's issues, and for challenging the Congressional seniority system.

In 2004, Chisholm said about herself, "I want history to remember me not just as the first black

woman to be elected to Congress, not as the first Black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of the United States, but as a Black woman who lived in the 20th century and dared to be herself."

The Black woman holds the key to survival and change.

History shows us up close and personal that she has been at the helm of meaningful causes. Also, her unwillingness to bend or break under pressure is a lesson to Black men and children to learn and follow that successful blueprint that has been tested by slave ships, brutal rapes and unwanted pregnancies at the hand of White plantation owners, countless hours of unpaid labor and hard work in the hot sun and cotton fields of the old south. She has endured the pains of Jim Crow Laws, Black Codes and the KKK who took her men and slaughtered and imprisoned them frequently yet she remembered and preserved the memory of the true definition of Black family and Black community. A Black woman is precious in every way having proved she is an inspiration to the Black race.

Today, Black woman still have vital roles to play in shaping families and the future for our youth.

We MUST Understand it takes an ignorant and shallow Black man to refer to her as a "whore", "bitch" or "prostitute". Stop using those words to describe our Beautiful Black women. They deserve complete Respect for they have done to inspire change and improve life for Black people!!! They have played key roles in Black history and still hold the key today as keepers of the family and directors of the futures of our youth.

YELLOW ROSE from pg. 1

-excerpt from song "Yellow Rose of Texas" hile some call it legend, Black historians contend the details of the "Yellow Rose of Texas" is not only true, but also reveals an ironic African-American tragedy in Black history.

It is the story of a Mulatto (fair-skinned yellow Negro) woman named Emily Morgan (West), who was not truly free by law, but a servant of James Morgan, an entrepreneur who capitalized on slaves, cheap land and business opportunities in the Mexican colony which later became Texas.

"Emily was a pawn caught in the middle of slave trade

that exploited beautiful Black women to satisfy the sex desires of White men at that time," Dr. James Butler, Black historian and sociologist at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana said. "Historically, Whites do not want these kinds of relevant truths exposed and linked to the horrors of slavery to be on the front pages of American history."

A mulatto was a mixed-race female born of African-American and white parents. The original lyrics describing the Yellow Rose of Texas refers to her as the "yellow" rose, in keeping with the historical use of term "high yellow" as a description of light skin among people of color in the South.

The fact revealed is that Morgan-West played a significant role in 1836 helping the General Sam Houston-led Texas rebels win the victory at San Jacinto over Mexican General and leader Santa Ana. It was the battle that secured Texas independence from Mexico.

Butler, who also heads the department of social sciences and government studies, said Black exploitation of Black women was accepted and common practice in southern states, including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and spread west into Texas territory.

"It is one of the reasons for the many variations of skin colors among Black people," he said.

"They were chosen and used as sexual surrogates at the will of White men. They simply had no choice."

According to black historians, historical records and information from Texas State Historical Association, Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M, the story of

Emily West has been told many ways, but one of the most intriguing accounts comes from a report from a "yellow" slave boy named Turner, who survived the battle to tell the story of how using Emily West as a sexual pawn played into the plans of the rebels to distract Santa Ana and overcome the Mexican Army.

"This story is a tragedy because it presents a sense of irony, not service," said Associate Professor Kenneth Howell, history program coordinator in the social work, behavioral and political sciences department at Prairie View A&M. "She was a slave and in Texas (at that time) would have always been a slave. She was caught in the middle and ended up playing a major role in Texas liberation and independence."

It must be noted that Mexico outlawed slavery and that Santa Ana did free slaves who were captured in Texas territory. Many of the freed men and women ended up in Mexico.

Her fate as the "Yellow Rose of Texas" began when she came into the service of Colonel James Morgan after Morgan went to get workers for his settlement in 1835, according to Martha Ann Turner and her book, "Yellow Rose of Texas: Her Saga and Her Song".

About the same time Morgan was expanding, the Texas war for independence from Mexico was fully underway led by General Sam Houston. Morgan settled at the mouth of the San Jacinto River and provided some food and support provisions for Houston's men.

Morgan put Emily West in charge of loading flatboats with Houston's supplies while he went to serve at the Port of Galveston protecting government officials

and fugitives.

While this was going on General Santa Ana moved men into position for a full scale assault on Texas rebels. Others fled in advance of his arrival, but West stayed behind to fulfill and keep her master's orders. Santa Ana saw Emily West and was struck by her beauty. He captured the booty, meant for Houston's men and took West and a boy named Turner. West convinced Turner to escape from Santa Ana's men.

Santa Ana was a ladies man who love playing the field and plundering the "goods" of women.

Emily was a beautiful Black woman he could not resist and when Houston moved his camp closer after getting intelligence from Turner, he spied into the camp and saw her serving the general champagne and breakfast.

Houston allegedly remarked that it was his hope that the slave girl would keep him in bed all day.

That afternoon, the final battle was waged and the Mexican Army was caught by surprise and Santa Ana was caught with his "pant's down". "It is not surprising that he was caught with his pants down," Butler said. "Santa Ana was no different than White men who for years saw and took advantage of beautiful Black women being intrigued by their beauty and skin color. He desired that same encounter with the Black experience at any cost."

Some historians report that he ran away from the battle shirt open and using a dead soldiers blue smock. He was later captured.

"His sexual liaison with Emily cost him," Howell said. "She distracted him and it completely caused chaos with the Mexican Army." Colonel Morgan found out about her work and had the story told and recorded far and wide.

Black historians said details about Emily West Morgan are sketchy after the Texans victory.

No one really knows what happen to Emily after that. Some say she went to New York and others believe she still may be buried in the family cemetery near the Houston Ship Channel and San Jacinto area.

A song was written in her honor that associates itself with the "Yellow Rose of Texas" and its connection to Texas independence. The Yellow Rose of Texas is one of the best known songs about Texas. Texas Confederate soldiers marched off to the Civil War singing the song as a tribute to that great moment in history and for motivation to defeat the North. Also, her heroic efforts are celebrated and remembered by the members of the Knights of the Yellow Rose of Texas each April 21 at San Jacinto.

Black historians said that she will never receive a posthumous medal or national recognition for her efforts because she was Black woman and a slave tied to a story that involved sexual gratification and a military plan that exploited and took advantage of it.

"The fate of Texas and a nation turned on her work," Butler said. "Despite her pivotal role, White history does not want to open that door." Prairie View A&M Historian Frank Jackson agreed. "The truth on Emily Morgan-West has been played down in history. She deserves credit and tribute for making one of the most significant sacrifices and contributions in American History that has gone unrecognized."

Dallas "Mad Men" Give New City Manager "Presidential Salary"

That is wrong, and in 2014, it’s an embarrassment. A woman deserves equal pay for equal work. She deserves to have a baby without sacrificing her job. A mother deserves a day off to care for a sick child or sick parent without running into hardship – and you know what, a father does, too. It’s time to do away with workplace policies that belong in a “Mad Men” episode. This year, let’s all come together – Congress, the White House, and businesses from Wall Street to Main Street – to give every woman the opportunity she deserves. A.C. Gonzalez a male Latino, is the new male city manager steps into the job being paid $95,000 more than his predecessor Mary Suhm, a White female who served in the position for a decade before retiring and never saw that kind of money. Suhn only made $305,000.

He will now be making as much as President Obama, who makes an annual salary of $400,000 as the nation's Chief Executive. Gonzalez will be

tasked to run the daily affairs of the city.

Gonzalez, a Latino, was the No. 2 man behind Suhm and hand-picked by the Dallas City Council after interviewing candidates David Cooke from Wake County in North Carolina, and Deanna Santana from Oakland, Ca. Gonzalez, who becomes Dallas' 15th city manager, justified his own salary that the council approved was based on the market. He has lobbied for himself stating he is worth the money.

“The setting at $400,000 really speaks more to how underpaid Mary was, not how inappropriate this salary amount is,” Gonzalez told reporters.

“It’s really in the middle of the market. When you look at the private sector in terms of what payments would be for a comparable position, this doesn’t even come close.”

Suhm's salary was affected during the economic downturn and even was also cut by 6 percent as part of an effort to balance the city budget - Nothing in his agreement appears to include getting a salary cut based on performance or the economy.

Other female city managers in Texas cities also make less money. In San Antonio City Manager Sheryl Sculley, a White woman, has been on the job and makes only $355,000 a year.

Houston, the largest city in the state, does not have a city

manager and instead assigns those responsibilities to its mayor, Annise Parker, who also is a White woman, is paid just $210,000, or about what San Antonio pays one of its deputy city managers and she manages the state's largest city and the fourth largest city in the United States.

Marc Anthony Ott was selected as City Manager for the City of Austin by the Austin City Council in January 2008.

Ott is African-American and the 17th person in city history to be appointed City Manager in a full-time capacity. His salary comes in at a $302,000 In 2004, Joyce Wilson, a White female as El Paso’s first city manager. Her contract was extended in 2010 and expires in September. She earns nearly $239,000 a year and oversees more than 6,200 city employees and an annual budget of more than $754 million.

Some on the council felt that the salary bar should have been lowered and the should have started him at a much lower level and let him work up to the $350,000 or more..

However, it does not address the issue that Suhm was underpaid by the council as a female and at a time when the economy is delicate and people are suffering hard times searching for jobs, needing assistance and and benefits for the long-term unemployed.

Gonzalez background includes a record in municipal management for more than 28 years,

Sheryl Sculley San Antonio City Manager $355,000/ yr

with 14 years serving the City of Dallas as an Assistant City Manager. During his tenure, he has spearheaded projects that have changed the face of Dallas, including the development of the Omni Dallas Convention Center Hotel, management of the Love Field Modernization Program, negotiations of the Dallas Stars Reunion Arena lease, which brought the professional sports franchise to Dallas.

He is responsible for the daily operations of the municipal organization. He manages a staff of approximately 13,000 employees and a budget of nearly 4 billion.

Most recently, Gonzalez served as interim City Manager beginning in June 2013. He was also the First Assistant City Manager overseeing Aviation, Dallas Fire-Rescue, Municipal Courts, Office of Emergency Management, and the Dallas Police Department.

Over the past 5 years, he has also managed Convention and Event Services, Housing/ Community Services, Economic Development, Planning and Development Services.

Gonzalez has served two stints as Assistant City Manager of the City of Dallas. The first, from 1988 to 1995, and the current one starting in 2006. Before returning to the City of Dallas, Gonzalez was the President of Buerger Investments, a privately owned investment company.

Previously, Mr. Gonzalez was the Deputy Superintendent

and then Superintendent of the Austin Independent School District from 1995 to the end of 1999. His most recognized achievements include: executing a $437 million bond program which built 11 new schools, 156 classroom additions and renovated 96 campuses; developing the district’s first historically underutilized business program; and leading the development of the district’s first joint building project with the City of Austin, which connected an elementary school with police, social services, library and park and recreation facilities.

Gonzalez has served as City Manager for three Texas communities: City of San Marcos, from 1979 to 1988; City of Carrizo Springs from 1976 to 1979; and City of Dilley from 1974 to 1976, where he started his career at age 23 as one of the youngest city managers in the U.S. Mr. Gonzalez earned his Bachelor’s Degree with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1973 and his Masters Degree in Urban Studies from Trinity University in 1976.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings expressed confidence in the new man on the job and said he will support Gonzalez and council members have followed his lead.

New Principal Vows to Take “Wildcat Pride” to a New Level

r. Shirley RoseGilliam understands the meaning of growing up in tough, challenged and disadvantaged settings with very few opportunities.

Her experiences as a child have been both a catalyst for changing her situation and today motivates her to answer the special “calling” to make a difference in the lives of youth.

That calling has brought her to Phillis Wheatley High School, where she takes over reigns as principal at a school that has struggled with principal turnover and image issues in recent years.

“I believe that God put it in me to be a servant-leader,” she said.

“I am here to make a difference in kids lives and make things better and looking for the same enthusiasm from teachers to help make that happen.”

Rose-Gilliam said she comes into an environment seeking cooperation at all levels and hopes to build relationships that result in restoring “Wildcat Pride” to heights not yet seen in school history.

She has a history of turning problem schools around and working to improve and restore a positive tone in the school and communities surrounding her schools.

Wheatley has been a campus that has struggled with principal turnover in recent years.

“I remember how one school and one teacher made a difference in my life by instilling a vision and dream in me,” she said. “Why Wheatley? Why not.

My goal is for every child to change the the way they look at themselves, to believe in the possibilities and stop thinking negatively.”

Rose-Gilliam is a long-time Houston area resident and a 25-year veteran educator and administrator with a proven track record for turning around struggling schools and knows the uphill battles that some schools face when not in more affluent areas.

She comes to Houston Independent School District from the Fort Bend Independent School District, where she spent 10 years as a high school teacher and another 15 years as a campus administrator. While in Fort Bend, she was tapped by the superintendent to lead the turnaround effort at Thurgood Marshall High School, a campus that successfully emerged from an academically unacceptable rating during her tenure. She also served as principal at George Bush High School and Christa McAuliffe Middle School, both in Fort Bend ISD. “African-American and Hispanic children may come from tough backgrounds, but that has nothing to do with their ability to learn and achieve and what we as teachers and educators can do to serve them,” she said. “Our roles as educators is to be consistent in showing them how to learn, instill a positive dream in their hearts and lead them towards success.”

She has a powerful presence in the hallways, but a soft “motherly” approach to motivating students and getting them to look at themselves and assess their

“It's about the children and building positive trusting relationships with them,” she said.

“From hallways to classroom, we will provide a consistency and routine that will set new standards inside the school that transfers our school spirit, success goals and culture from the school into the neighborhoods.”

Her caring attitude and genuine approach to administration and education has built her respect from students and solid reputation among her colleagues.

“I am a cheerleader for the school and youth,” she said. “My goals are for kids to believe they matter and change the current flow of negative culture into the school and turn that tide by building pride, setting a new direction with new expectations.”

Dr. Rose holds a Bachelor of Science from University of Houston, a Master of Education from University of HoustonVictoria, and a Doctorate of Education from Texas A&M University.

To demonstrate her commitment to her goals Dr. Rose has already has started to transition into her new role and is begin working with faculty, staff, parents, students and the community.

She plans to meet with students and develop a new school “motto” and use peer mentoring development and some other ideas to help boost attendance and encourage academic achievement.

“Pride happens when you build a culture from within the school that spreads outside the school into homes and neighborhoods,” she said. “It's about taking responsibility and ownership for yourself, your school and your community.”

HOUSTON- Lone Star College Chancellor Dr. Richard Carpenter has announced his plans to retire this summer.

Staff members were notified of his plans Friday and expressed sadness about the announcement.

A brilliant and nationally acclaimed higher education leader, Dr. Richard Carpenter has been with the Lone Star College System since 2007.

Community Democratic Primary Political Forum

ith the March Primary just over the horizon, Democratic candidates have one more opportunity to make decisions about your democracy, community and future.

The Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development Inc. and AfricanAmerican News&Issues is sponsoring a political forum on Thursday at 7 p.m. At the Beulah Ann Shepherd building at 6112 Wheatley Street in Houston.

The forum will feature special opening words from State Representative Sylvester Turner, Chairman of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus.

One of the hottest contested

races is in State Senate District 15 where incumbent State Senator John Whitmire is facing challenger Attorney Damian La Croix.

Senator John Whitmire represents the 15th Senatorial District comprised of north Houston and parts of Harris County. He was elected to the Texas Senate in 1982 after serving 10 years in the Texas House of Representatives.

With over 30 years of service in the Texas Senate, Senator Whitmire ranks first in seniority and is the “Dean of the Texas Senate.” Whitmire serves as Chair of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee and works to bring about needed changes to the adult and juvenile criminal justice systems. He is also a member of the Senate Administration Committee and the Senate Business and Commerce Committee. In addition, he serves as a member of the Senate Finance Committee

where he is committed to finding appropriate solutions for funding the state's many agencies and programs. Whitmire has been a big proponent of education and rehabilitation and fixing the criminal justice system.

His opponent, Damian La Croix is challenging Whitmire calling for new look at leadership and is stressing the need for quality education starts at an early age and may be the key to lifting people out of poverty and keeping our kids out of the criminal justice system. He is stressing a 21st Century education stressing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as a central part of our educational system.

Attorney Kim Ogg, is running in the Democratic primary for Harris County District Attorney against Attorney Lloyd Wayne Oliver. Ogg is running on the platform of making justice work for all citizens of Harris County.

HOUSTON- The community had questions and Texas Department of Transportation had few answers to 200 attending a community meeting in the Acres Home community.

The meeting was held to call TXDot to task on a $24 million project at I-45 at Shepherd and Little York that went forward

without community input. Only two people gave feedback in 2011 before the project got underway.

Residents expressed concerns about the closing of Millville and Rittenhouse streets, flooding and drainage issues and the increased traffic problems causing concern for school children

State Senator John Whitmire and State Rep. Sylvester Turner, who also contended the project got by them, moderated the meeting and stood with residents demanding answers and drilling TxDOT for not properly communicating with them and leaving residents in the district out of the loop.

TXDOT representative Quincy Allen apologized to the crowd and promised not only to keep resident informed in the future, but also provide a place at the discussion table each week for updates on the project and to answer any questions that come up during the project.

Turner said it is a case of taking something negative and creating a positive result.

She is former prosecutor, anti-gang investigator and crime prevention leader. After serving as the city's anti-gang task force director in 1994, she became the executive director of Crime Stoppers of Houston in 1999. She left the organization in 2006 to purse a private legal practice and has been representing crime victims and police officers and served as a defense attorney.

Other important races involve judges and courts. These races are important because they could determine the direction of criminal justice, platforms, issues and how cases are looked at involving those who appear in those courts.

Candidates in those races include District candidates running for in Democratic Primary races for District Judge, 113th Judicial District where Lory C. Gray is pitted against Steven Kirkland; District Judge, 246th Judicial District where Julia Maldonado is

taking on Sandra Peake; District Judge 280th Judicial District where Allecia Lindsey Pottinger and Barbara Stadler are suaring off; Family District Judge, 308th Judicial District where Jim Evans and Bruce Steffler are running; Judge, County Criminal Court at Law No. 10 with George Barnstone and John Connolly are vying for a spot; and the County Clerk's race that features Gayle Young Mitchell and Ann Harris Bennett.

Candidates will be given time to share information about their backgrounds and plans for public office and community vision for the future.

The public will also be given the opportunity to ask questions of candidates during the question and answer session.

Some say preparing the flock for social change is easier said than done, and requires doing more than just talking about it.

Preachers gathered from Texas and around the country as far away as Chicago, Illinois, Louisville, Ky, Milwaukee, Wisc. and Irving, Ca. attended the conference with the overall notion of taking back some “fire in the belly” enthusiasm for saving their communities.

Charles H. Lewter IV, Dean of Chapel at Prairie View A&M, said he hoped the them would remind ministers that time is of the essence. Not only is unity needed, but pastors must focus on preaching the true gospel with power and ensuring the message remains relevant in today's society.

“The church must continue to be that vehicle for social and moral change in the communities we serve,” he said. “That happens when we take a dynamic approach to dealing the ills of society and find ways and initiatives that will help us bring the good news to a generation that does not seem to want to hear it.”

He said the new road to social change start with a hands on ministry approach that encourages men to come back to the church and be leaders and role models TX-10

Pastor F. N. Williams, 85, who was honored at the conference with the Senior Minister of the Year Award, said preachers have been challenged to go back to their churches and not just preach, but to make that real difference.

“We are losing ground and slipping further behind each day,” he said. “We must meet today's changes with the kind of change that challenges our people to change their appearances and goals and teach them to embrace and reflect the true blueprint for Black freedom.”

Even though he received an award, he said it was not the priority or the highlight of the conference for him.

battleground has been drawn and social and economic change for the Black community and there is a need to develop a new consciousness about real priorities and it must start with preachers and the church.

He blamed the current dilemma facing the Black community on the selfishness and poor vision of some and the neglect of others.

Williams also contends that the struggle between Elitist Blacks and Middle Class Blacks have created damaging divisions in

the community and left poor in the community fending for themselves.

“We have hurt ourselves by creating a new class caste system among our own people,” he said. “Churches must now step forward, take the lead again and be the source for change.”

He also said efforts must me stepped up to get parents and pastors on the same page when it comes to educating, training and disciplining youth.

up, we want them to partner with us and participate in the push for improvements in the community,” he said. “We must save our young people.”

He said African-Americans must also start reading conscious Black newspapers and other valuable information that will educate and help advance the cause of making our people ready for the future.

“Social change starts here,” Williams said.

AUSTIN- Finalists for the 2014 Second Nature Climate Leadership Awards (CLA) were announced today with Huston-Tillotson University among the institutions selected. The annual competition is held among United States colleges and universities that are signatories of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

The awards program is sponsored by Second Nature, a national nonprofit that seeks to create a sustainable society by transforming higher education, and Planet Forward, an organization that engages innovators and publishes compelling ideas for some of society’s biggest challenges.

ability efforts within the Huston-Tillotson University environment and among faculty, staff, and students has contributed to this recognition and others that we have captured,” said Larry L. Earvin, President and Chief Executive Officer.

This year, the award program’s fifth, drew the largest and most competitive pool of nominations to date.

Second Nature will partner with Planet Forward, a web-to-television initiative that documents and shares energy, climate, and sustainability advances, in a public voting competition featuring the finalists’ climate leadership and campus innovations during Earth Month (April 2014).

The selection process will feature a public, online voting component. Each of the 20 finalists will be invited to produce a video

Voting will be open during Earth Month, April 2014.

Approximately 50,000 votes were cast during last year’s voting. The Second Nature Board of Directors will then choose the award winners in late Spring 2014. More information on the awards is at www. secondnature.org/awards.

Inspiration at General Assembly PRAIRIE VIEW- The spring 2014 General Assembly provided a motivational start to the semester thanks to Rev. Terry K. Anderson of Lilly Grove Baptist Church in Houston.

Anderson captivated the audience with his powerful and inspiring words on “Embracing your Individuality.”

The crowd listened intently and cheered as he explained the tools and mindset necessary to accomplish your academic Rev. Terry K. Anderson goals.

“If you think education is expensive, try being ignorant,” Anderson said, as he urged students to learn all that they can inside and outside of the classroom. “Live a life that is unexamined. If you don’t stand for something you fall for anything.”

The general assembly is held to start out each semester with an encouraging message for students, faculty and staff. A guest speaker is invited to address the University and impart special words of wisdom and motivation.
