ive-year old little “Johnny” is playing in the house with his 4-year old little sister, “Quanterisha”, when she reaches up and hits him in the head for taking a bite of her peanut butter and jelly sammitch. As soon as Johnny raises his hand to retaliate, dear old mom and dad instruct him to “never” hit his little sister. In doing so, little Johnny learns his first lesson in “female respect”. Enter little Johnny’s 65 year-old grandmother, “Madea”, who observes Quanterisha beating the hell outta Johnny as he’s taking all of this toddler abuse in stride when, outta nowhere, she instructs

I don’t know if it is a crosscultural scenario, but in most African-American households this seems to be a rite of passage for little boys growing up and learning the “proper” way in dealing with their female counterparts. There was a lot of print in social media concerning NFL player Ray Rice and his retaliatory knockout of his fiancé. It’s been pointed out that she spat on and knocked the hell out of little Ray-Ray prior to her being TKO’d in the third round. Hell, it wasn’t even a TKO, she got knocked the hell out.

Images of him dragging her unconscious, pugilistic ass out of an elevator was eerie-looking at best; especially to women around the world.

I wonder if it would have had the same effect if Solange was dragging Jay Z’s ugly ass out of the elevator

the same way. I doubt it, as a matter of fact, I think that women as a whole would have rejoiced in seeing Bey’s man out cold and Solange standing over him with a five-inch heel in his chest flexing her muscles.

The majority of women in an unofficial poll I took didn’t think that it would be right for men to hit women EVER. But, I did have quite a few who said that there are times where it would be appropriate. I can honestly say that I would NEVER hit Julie for any reason at all, but if she got mad at me for complaining that my sammitch wasn’t fixed correctly and she hauled off and slapped the ish outta me, my initial response would be that of shock, followed by astonishment and disbelief that she would do such a thing. She would get that first punch for free. After that, she may not want to do that no mo. Therefore, I believe that it’s always best for people to keep their hands to themselves. I don’t think it’s appropriate for either party to beat the hell outta each other, period. Don’t do that.

What Ever Happened to Post-Racism?

D

uring the last few years, from Trayvon Martin to Eric Garner’s painful words of “I can’t breathe”, to Ferguson, to voting rights and more, we as a nation continue to deal with issues of race - and more specifically racial inequality - in the areas of criminal justice, voting, housing, education, health care and just about every area of life. In the last two weeks alone, National Action Network (NAN) and I have been contacted from people in Madison, Wisconsin about an unarmed teenager killed by police, from others about a student at the University of Virginia who was allegedly brutally beaten by cops and from folks concerned about Fort Lauderdale police officers who are accused of using racial slurs in text messages and making a troubling mock movie trailer. We were even contacted by reporters asking about Starbucks’ recent campaign to engage

in a conversation about race. But if memory serves me correctly, in 2008, when the first African American President was elected, it was widely heralded that we were somehow now in a ‘post-racial’ era. So much for that talking point.

Following the historic ‘08 election, William Bennett, a conservative pundit and former Republican Administration official, got on TV and said that the day of Al Sharpton is over and race is no longer a factor.

Not only are we not post-racial (as many of us predicted), but those who continue to struggle against racial bias, both blatant and institutional, have not disappeared - and in many ways we have increased our workload. The fact is that we cannot deal with race via a strategy of societal denial; you only solve problems when you confront them. If we act as if something that is festering isn’t

Domestic violence is an issue that doesn’t get a lot airtime in the local media outlets as it should. It’s usually confined to incidents between grown folk who’ve been together for a while where the abuse occasionally ends in death. What goes underreported, however, is the domestic violence between young people in secondary schools and colleges.

You often hear of teenage couples who date, breakup, and get back together. Every now and then you may see evidence of some type of altercation, usually in the forms of scratches, bruises, busted lips, and blackened eyes. And this is from middle school students. The aggressors are often young males who’ve seen their older siblings and/ or dads abuse women. Now, the trend is changing to where young girls, usually in groups, will come together to whup boyfriends senseless if they don’t have their ways. I guess what I’m trying to say is that these actions

This is precisely why NAN continues the much needed work of raising awareness around issues of injustice, fighting on behalf of the voiceless and taking concrete action to eliminate the status quo and make our society more equitable. And this is why in about two weeks we will gather once again for our annual convention.

From April 8-11th, Administration officials, Cabinet members, civil rights leaders, journalists, community advocates, educators, actors, students, entertainers, every day citizens and a surprise guest or two will gather at the Sheraton New York for NAN’s highly-anticipated conference. There will be plenary sessions and panels that will tackle everything from police brutality and homophobia to immigration and women’s empowerment. Kids watch these sorts of activities take place by older people who somehow seem to accept these beatings/ abuses as a form of “love”. There has to be a way to keep adolescent kids from engaging in these scenarios to keep them from escalating later in life. Here are a few of my personal remedies; you knew I had some coming, didn’t you?

1. Do like I did when my daughters introduced me to their prom dates prior to going to the prom. Take the young man outside and give him a small interview. Keep a stern, Freddy Kruger-like face. Hear the young feller out and end the conversation with the most famous daddy-line of all time; “If you putcho hands on my daughter, I’ll whup yo ass”. Its effective 99.8 percent of the time.

2. Have yo daughters learn how to handle young men by observing country girls. They don’t get abused 99.9 % of the time. You know why?

ne of the most frequently asked topics discussed by my peers, family, and even students deals with the entire Bill Cosby matter. ‘Do you think that he did it?’ ‘Don’t you think that these White women are trying to bring a brother down?’

I answer nary a word in response to the allegations being hurled against the nation’s most revered Black TV dad. Although I would hate for the allegations to be true, life has taught me that fame and morality do not exist on the same continuum.

As someone who writes about manhood, race, and culture; most think it strange that I have avoided this entire episode. The primary reason for my silence is that I have, without any actual evidence, an innate urge to defend Mr. Cosby from his White accusers. This urge is heightened by the unprecedented manner that whites have attacked Mr. Cosby’s legacy, a manner that appears from my perspective, and the vast majority of African-Americans, to be reserved for Black men.

Consequently, I have not commented on this matter because I would never want to be viewed as one of those that piled onto one of my own.

The only reason that I am even commenting on this issue at this moment is the recent piece written

by Jewel Allison, the author of Stealing Peace: Let’s Talk about Racism, which raises several significant issues regarding racial allegiance and its cost on my people’s soul. Ms. Allison alleges that she, like droves of other

women, were victimized by Mr. Bill Cosby and has finally discovered the courage to speak out.

What makes her story so much different from the White women who have accused Mr. Cosby is that they cowered in the face of his celebrity status, Jewel Allison has had to factor in one other variable regarding her speaking out against Cosby. That additional variable is race, what W.E.B. Du Bois refers to as ‘the problem of the twentiethcentury.’ Ms. Allison hesitated in the face of the same dilemma that has silenced not only my pen, but also the pens of many other African-American writers.

Jewel Allison relates that race trumped rape, a dubious decision that calls for one to ignore their personal injury (rape) for the good of the collective (race). A situation that grows more awkward when one reflects that it was a ‘brother’ who caused the injury.

Unfortunately, I have witnessed such flawed thinking repeated in a host of arenas on a daily basis.

During such moments, we often give our people a pass in public, due to our realization that we are inextricably linked with one another and public criticism of their actions or behavior before outsiders invariably leads to a disparaging eye being cast upon ourselves; or at least that is what the paranoia that being Black in America has engendered within us. Jewel Allison relates this peculiar quandary when she pens that “As an African-American woman, I felt the stakes for me were even higher. Historic images of Black men being vilified en masse as sexually violent sent chills through my body. Telling my story wouldn’t only help bring down Cosby; I feared it would undermine the entire African-American community.”

We Should Pick Our Leaders!

ohn Quincy Adams, once shared, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

I could not agree with this thought more. As it is, too many members of our community allow the media and various other outlets infiltrate their minds with images of those of whom we should respect and support. I have never and will never be one that will be bought into all of that hype. Because it is extremely easy to judge a book by its cover, without ever having the chance of reading and comprehending all of the contents that are included within.

With that being stated, as Chairman of the Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development; I was compelled to find a man that I knew would deliver a message that would provide attendees good food for thought as it relates to choosing a keynote speaker.

One person came to mind and that is who I chose to stand in that place, it was none other than Quanell X, the leader of Houston’s New Black Panther Party. I chose him because he is one that I very well respect and admire his tenacity for continuing on in the fight for equal rights and justice for the African-American community.

A lot of people misconstrue the term, “respect” because of a lack of knowledge. But according to Webster, respect is, “a feeling of admiring someone or something that is good, valuable, important; or a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious and should be treated in an appropriate way.” Therefore, having been a man that has kept up with the works that Quanell has done and being made aware of the adversity that he has endured from even his own people; I must admit

that I admire his will to persevere and still stand his ground in spite of.

There are not very many leaders that are willing to boldly stand alone for equality, regardless of who supports them or who likes what they have to say. From personal experiences, I know for certain that Quanell has been one of those type of leaders. He has not backed down from his stance, no matter what people think or say about him because he understands and realizes that there is a greater cause.

I was approached by many people in regards to my decision of securing Quanell as the speaker. However, I know the man personally and I am aware of many of the things that he does behind closed doors that not many other people are aware of. So it was no hard task for me to decide upon this factor. Because at the end of the day, I believe that we as Africans living in America, should be responsible for picking our own leaders.

to control our minds, children, educational system, communities and various other institutions and elements. To that regard, I am just as passionate about other people picking leaders for us as I am about, people persuading others on who to vote for. Because things such as these are important and have a direct result on our communities and the future of them.

Concluding, I would just like to echo the words of Colin Powell, who made reference to a very valid theory. He said, “Leadership is solving problems.

The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.” Everyone can not relate to this thought, but I do believe that Quanell can. Because majority of the time when members of the African-American community in our region, are faced with instances of injustice one of the first persons that is called to the scene is Quanell X. I just don’t believe that people would keep calling him if there was not a noticeable difference from his presence on the scene versus the contrary.

So obviously the man has done something right in all of these years he has been going around allowing his voice to be heard. Thus, he is and will always remain a leader in my book and I’m sure many victims and families of victims that he has assisted down through the years would share in on my sentiments as well.

So to Quanell, I’m expressing to you, “keep fighting for our community!

HOUSTON - Reclaiming, Reframing and Rebuilding Acres Home was the theme of the evening as politicians, activists, community members, pastors, small business owners, educational figures and many others recently gathered in the banquet hall of the Beulah Ann Shepard Building to attend the Acres Home Chamber for Business & Economic Development’s, 26th Annual Empowerment Awards Banquet. The Beulah Ann Shepard building is located at 6112 Wheatley St., 77091.

State Representative Sylvester Turner jump started the evening’s ceremony with a warm welcome, followed by James Weldon Johnson’s beautiful rendition of the Negro National Anthem, Lift Ev’ry Voice. Pastor Edwin Davis then, offered prayer and supplication to God, as he proceeded with the invocation. Following, the AHCBED’s board of directors began the presentation of awards. Six empowerment awards were given in the fields of: Small Business, Education, Community, Religion and Politics/Community. The recipients of the empowerment awards in each category were as followed: Boyd Funeral Directors of Texas - Small Business, Communities in Schools of Houston - Education, Cedric Johnson (Lincoln City Park Community Center) - Community, Pastor James W.E. Dixon, II (Community of Faith Church) - Religion and Constable Alan Rosen - Politics/Community.

Jazzy and upbeat tunes were played by the George Washington Carver High School Jazz Band under the direction of, Instructor Mike McCullough; as guests enjoyed a delectable dinner catered by Evelyn Lacy.

Throughout the evening, several political representatives were given the opportunity to speak and each one offered insight and valuable information in regards to the Acres Home community and their efforts of: “Reclaiming, Reframing and Rebuilding” the historical settlement. Congressman Al Green introduced the speaker of the evening by stating that, “it is better to see a sermon, than hear a sermon.” He further stated, “Your life really speaks for you” and “I think that all of you know that, Bro. Quanell’s life has been one that has been dedicated to the service of others.”

Once Congressman Green had listed several accomplishments of the vigorous community activist, Quanell X proudly approached the podium. He first thanked Chairman Roy Douglas Malonson, who he affectionately referred to as, “his big brother” for inviting him to come and speak at the banquet. During his message he explained that he has a problem with the community neglecting, “Black men and women living right in the community, but are suffering, dying and living in a shameful condition.” As he continued his address, he informed that he is able to do what he does because, “I can say what TX- 4

I want to say, I can say it to whoever I got to say it to, I can stand up and don’t scratch and I can speak to the thoughts that be, because the enemies of Black people don’t sign my check, I’m a free Black man!” Throughout his delivery he addressed several issues that have plagued the Black community such as: television shows that have no real message but are marketed to African-Americans, deplorable conditions of the community, homosexuality, the decline of values within Black families and numerous other elements that are often overlooked. He finalized his message by telling the Black politicians in attendance that, “Black youth are coming after you.” “Ferguson showed the community how the Black preacher and politician have lost all power,” he added.

Once Quanell had concluded his message, he was presented with a golden-bronze buffet of President Barack Obama. Afterwards, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee presented a proclamation to Chairman Roy Douglas and Shirley Ann Malonson for their years of service to the Acres Home community and onward.

Closing remarks were given by Chairman Roy Douglas Malonson who thanked all of the attendees, sponsors and supporters of the banquet. He also acknowledged the presence of dear family members who were in the audience. Finally, Attorney Benjamin J. Hall, II (Hall Law Firm) took the podium. As the evening event came to a close, he gave the benediction. In doing so, he and long-time friend, State Representative Sylvester Turner boyishly humored the gathering. The 26th Annual Empowerment Awards Banquet proved to be a success as guests were seen exiting with smiling faces.

There is no limit on the total dollar amount of the E&PD Settlement. All qualified and timely claims will be paid in full once they are approved. The Settlement also allowed for Seafood Compensation claims, but the deadline for those claims has passed.

Patricia Boyd was born the third of six children to the Late Travis and Gladys Chester residing in Tyler, Texas. Patricia received her educational training in the Chapel Hill Independent School in Tyler, Texas. She attended Chapel Hill Elementary School, Chapel Hill Jr High, and was a graduate from Chapel Hill High School in May of 1971. Mrs. Boyd later attended Tyler Junior College and The Federal Business Institute where she obtained a degree in Business Management. In 1982 Patricia met the late "Coach" Wesley A. Boyd, married in 1989 and to this union one son, Mr. Cortland Nathaniel Boyd was born.

After moving to Houston, Mrs. Boyd decided to enroll in mortuary school. She enrolled at the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service. In 1996 Mrs. Boyd graduated from Commonwealth and became a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer for the state of Texas.

Alongside her husband; Mrs. Boyd learned a great deal of knowledge and information about the industry in owning and operating her own funeral business.

Bishop James W.E. Dixon II was called to preach at the early age of 15. At age 18, he became the pastor of Greater Mt. Pillow Baptist Church, a 109 year old traditional and historic church. In Houston’s growing population the dropout rate of students is alarming. The dropout rate is an epidemic that influences an entire community. Twenty-two percent of Harris County residents over the age of 25, an estimated 545,335 people, do not have a high school diploma (American Fact Finder, 2006-2010). “Dropouts are less likely to be employed, earn less when they are employed, pay less in taxes, receive more in direct welfare payments, and are more likely to be incarcerated” (The Bush School of Government and Public Service, 2009). Poverty is highly correlated with dropping out among high school students of low income families; they are six times more likely to drop out of high school than their peers from high-income families (Alliance for Excellent Education, 2009).

Hispanic/Latino students are particularly vulnerable to dropping out of school (Children At Risk, 2010). The dropout rate of students is everyone’s concern. As this population increases, it transforms into less consumer spending and less skilled workers to support the city’s economic growth.

Communities In Schools of Houston, is helping to make a difference in the area of education and meeting the needs of our student population. It is this reason they have been selected as the Acres Home Chamber of Business and Economic Development Inc., Empowerment Award in Education for 2015. Communities In Schools of Houston (CIS) has served at-risk students in the Greater Houston Area since 1979.CIS is a campus-based, nonprofit organization providing direct services and resources to under-served children with unmet needs. By surrounding them with a community of support, CIS empowers students to stay in school and achieve in life.

COMMUNITY Cedric Johnson Lincoln City Park Community Center Ten years ago, Commissioner El Franco Lee and many others supported the inter-local agreement between the City of Houston and Harris County Precinct One to develop the grounds of the iconic 63 year old Lincoln City Park to provide programs in a safe environment for families in the Acres Home Community. The collaboration facilitated the development of a community center, fitness room. Indoor gymnasium, meeting rooms, playground and picnic area, including a half mile jogging and bike trail that is regularly patrolled by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Lincoln City Park’s goal is to continue to provide enriching activities and opportunities for children, young adults, seniors, and families in the community.
