HOUSTON – Marcus Garvey once declared that, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” If anyone can relate to the sentiments quoted by the Jamaican Civil Rights Activist; then certainly one of Houston’s own phenomenal unsung heroes’, Debra Blacklock-Sloan can.

The oldest of six children, she is a sixth-generation Texan and native Houstonian. At an early age she developed a passion for reading and history. Coming up in an era when teachers nurtured their students in school, she metaphorically related her primary years of education as being synonymous with Earth Wind and Fire’s song- “Yearning and Learnin.”

In 1974, she graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School and later studied at the University of Houston.

Though she dedicated her life to raising her children, in 1995 Blacklock-Sloan secured employment within the Aldine Independent School District at Drew Academy, as a librarian assistant.

Recently Stacey Dash, the sister from Clueless, came out and said that we have a responsibility in fight for racial equality and a big part of that is we must no longer have Black television shows, awards shows, etc. What do you think about this? Although I hate to admit it, I can see her point and somewhat agree with her.

A. Billingsley he popular saying that “Karma is a bitch” is an efficient way of stating that what we put out into the universe, positive or negative, will invariably make its way back to us in unexpected and unusual ways; many within the White community have been affected by this rule, however, they fail to acknowledge it. However you should not fret regarding this predicament, because, as always, there is a cadre of African-Americans who have proven apologetic and even dismissive in regards to the evil that Whites have historically done to persons of African descent. The latest to bend over and

assume the position is none other than Fox News correspondent and reformed video vixen Stacey Dash.

Although I am certain that Stacey Dash has some semblance of a formal “education”, there is no doubt that those efforts to educate herself have extinguished the firestorm of historical, cultural, and political illiteracy that appears each and every time she opens her mouth. Unfortunately for those who listen to her bird-brain attempts at political commentary, Dash’s intellectual inadequacies have proven to be quite contagious.

So I was saddened, yet not shocked by Mrs. Dash’s assertion that “We (African-Americans) have to make up our minds. Either we want to have segregation or integration, and if we don’t want segregation, then we have to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re Black. If it were the other way around, we’d be up in arms. It’s a double standard. There shouldn’t be a Black history month. We’re Americans, period.”

tardly best to defend Whites fail to take Whites to task for their well-known pattern of monopolizing each and every resource --- political, cultural, social, and natural --- that they can lay a claim to.

If provided an opportunity to speak to Mrs. Dash or any other Negro apologist spewing similar ilk regarding the existence of entities such as BET (which is ironically owned by Whites), Miss Black America, The Wiz, Black History Month, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities, I would remind them that the catalyst behind the formation of such entities is found in the refusal of Whites to include African-Americans in their American historical and cultural traditions.

In many ways it is hilarious that Stacey Dash’s historical illiteracy is sufficient enough for her to have chosen the aforementioned matters to defend her White benefactors upon.

A mere perusal of American history would have displayed to Mrs. Dash that American cultural events such as the Miss America pageant began in 1921, however, no African-Americans were included in the competition until Cheryl Browne represented Iowa in

ice President Joe Biden was not auditioning for a stint on SNL or appealing to divine providence when he quipped to a packed crowd of Democrats recently that the Republicans may have given the Democrats a “gift from the Lord” in the presidential race. The heavenly gift Biden referred to comes in the form of a Trump or Cruz presidential candidacy. Biden and many other Democrats practically salivate at the thought of either one of them getting the GOP presidential nomination.

The conventional wisdom is that this will deliver the White House back to the Democrats in a hand basket.

I am likewise not shocked that Mrs. Dash singled out her own people in regards to a call for them to abandon Black History Month, as if its existence compromises their American citizenship. Do not the same fears exist for the following groups who have annual celebrations?

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is the nightmare that has haunted the GOP party leaders from the moment that Trump and Cruz declared their candidacies. Both men are the most polarizing presidential ticket candidates since Sarah Palin turned the GOP White House bid into a running Comedy Central riff.

This election go-round, it’s far worse than when Palin was on the ticket in 2008, and later made some soundings about a 2012 presidential bid. Trump and Cruz have stayed at or near the top of the polls from the start of their campaigns. They both have big, angry and aroused constituencies, be it Cruz’s evangelicals or Trump’s fed up, white blue collar workers.

They are mostly white, older voters, and they would likely show up at the polls on Election Day for one of the two.

In the past, it was fairly easy for GOP party leaders to rid themselves of a party nuisance such as Palin.

They banked that they could maneuver and massage the primaries and convention to ensure that the noise and mischief the outsiders could make would die before the primary season began. That won’t happen this time. Trump has got, and will continue to get, non-stop, headline coverage from a slavish, fawning media; he will maintain his mass poll support from the disaffected millions of voters; and, he will likely get a proportional share of delegates in a number of GOP primaries, win or not. Cruz has a mountainous campaign war chest, the solid support of white protestant conservative evangelicals, and the prestige of holding a national office.

They also have gotten a huge lift from the cast of GOP presidential hopeful competitors. With the exception of the momentary fascination with Ben Carson, the other contenders have wallowed in single digits in the polls,

“HUMILITY WILL MAKE YOU PAUSE: A LETTER TO JOHNNY MANZIEL” Before I Lay it Down...

ike the majority of Christians in the United States, I attended church on Sunday. I didn’t stay home and watch it online like a lot of folk; cyber-church (though widely accepted nowadays) is not my favorite way of giving God some praise. I just like mingling with parishioners up close and personal. One of the benefits of going to church is being able to sit close enough to the pulpit to feel God’s presence personified through the pastor. Now, that doesn’t mean that God’s spirit doesn’t flow throughout the congregation for everybody else to experience, but it’s sorta like being at Frankie Beverly and Maze concert; the closer you are to the stage, the more “happy feelings” you experience. I love Jesus a little more than Frankie…

My pastor, Ralph Douglas West, said something in his sermon today that caused me to take note: “Humility will make you pause…” It centered on a bible story of an authoritative figure that wanted Jesus to come and heal his master who was sick and about to die. “For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, “Go” and he goes; and that one, “Come”. And he comes. I say to my servant, “Do this,” and he does it.” “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you.” Jesus was so impressed with the man He told his followers: “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.”

Pastor West’s sermon topic was: “Things that make Jesus say “wow”.

Earlier this week, NFL player Johnny Manziel more than likely sealed his fate in becoming a former quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.

In a highly profiled and tumultuous/

short NFL career, “Johnny Football” has struggled with conforming to the rules and standards of his team and the National Football League. He has seemingly struggled with authority figures most of his football life, having sought therapeutic treatment for whatever ails him. Even his dad reportedly told the media that if “Manziel doesn’t return to treatment, he’d probably won’t live to see his 24th birthday”.

That’s not good…

The former Heisman Trophy winner has shown flashes of greatness on the field only to have it overshadowed by his lack of respect for his team, bosses, and other authoritative figures in his life. If he’s causing this much havoc in the NFL, Kevin Sumlin should have been given a Heisman Trophy, too, for keeping his hard-headed ass in check at Texas A&M as his coach. The words used often to describe him are: “renegade”, “cocky” and “arrogant”. Needless to say, those adjectives are widely accepted as “favorable” if an athlete is accomplished and successful in the pro ranks, but if you haven’t won “ISH”, or done “ISH”, you ain’t “ISH” in the eyes of the public and other players. Therefore, Johnny Football, you’re gonna have to start over…

In order to do so, Manziel is going to need a huge dose of “humility”. He can voluntarily swallow it or have it rammed down his throat. Either way, if wants to continue to play the game he loves and earn millions while doing it, Johnny Manziel is going to have to change. And, in order to change he’ll have to slow down, sit down, and pause. It’s up to him…

This “letter” is intended for Johnny Manziel, but it could easily be applied to all of us at various stages of our lives. We may not have been in the limelight either figuratively or professionally, but humility has rung all of our doorbells a few times. You can be hard-headed at any stage, therefore, let’s not be too hard on Little Johnny. I hope he can pull himself through it. He can start by pausing…

ANIMAL CRUELTY

T

here is no way that a person could miss the relationship between Black Texans and their animals; many are so fond of their pets and animals that they literally consider them a major part of their family.

As a person who has been a part of the Acres Home community all of my life, I have personally seen fellow residents love their animals in a way that those who were unfortunately born outside of Acres Home or one of the surrounding communities could never understand. Unfortunately for many animal lovers, there has been a consistent pattern of individuals who have made the conscious decision to own animals and have also made a similar decision to not care for these living, breathing creatures that have feelings and emotions just like human beings.

I honestly believe that if many of the animals that we see around Acres Home, our community, I emphasize this fact because this problem is homegrown, they would tell a sorrowful story that depicts their owners, those who are supposed to love them the most and care for their every need, as people who should not have been allowed to be responsible for any living being; a child, goldfish, horse, cat, dog, chicken, etc.

I would be lying if I said that things have recently gotten worse and risen to a crisis level. If we are being honest with ourselves,

we all know that things have been at a crisis level for the longest period of time. There are members in our community who fail to understand that their ownership of an animal comes with significant responsibilities that extend far beyond simply hopping on a horse and galloping around Acres Homes only to return the animal to a too small metal shelter and thinking that allowing them to graze on grass during even lean times is sufficient nutrition.

It is time for those who have any level of love and respect for the animals that we see around Acres Homs, and the surrounding areas, to band against those in our midst who are neglecting their duties as animal owners. I think that most of us will agree that if they can not properly take care of their animals that they should not have the privilege, and yes it is a privilege, of owning animals, regardless of the species.

So it is now time for those that own pets and/or animals that are needed for some real purpose beyond companionship to step up to the plate and begin taking their duties and responsibilities seriously. If I could, I would plead with the individuals who are neglecting the animals and pets with the following questions.

1. Are you financially stable enough to own a pet or animal?

2. What provisions

do you have on your premises to take care of large animals such as horses and cows?

If you can not answer this question with a clear answer that details the steps that you have taken to care for your animals, maybe you should not have them on your property.

3. Do you know the existing laws surrounding pet/animal ownership?

4. Would you like for someone who was placed in charge of taking care of you to treat you the same way that you treat your animals? If not, maybe you should consider not being an animal owner.

It is time that we take this issue seriously and help the entire Acres Homes community by reporting those individuals, even if they are your neighbors, for acts of animal cruelty.

She explained that working in the library was a stepping stone for her because in 2005 Catherine Roberts hired her as the historic research director for the R.B.H. Yates Museum, Inc. located in Freedmen’s Town. During an interview, Blacklock-Sloan revealed that is was Roberts, co-founder of the museum, who pushed her to do more. “As I researched properties the museum owned, I found records that documented contributions and accomplishments of early AfricanAmericans in Houston, which was a great experience for me.”

From her experience at the museum and previous exposures, she was able to birth her own ventures: Touring Texans, a bus sightseeing service which takes passengers from Houston to historic AfricanAmerican destinations in the United States. The second, Ebony Ancestry is a genealogy service for individuals interested in researching their family history. She takes pride in helping others uncover their ancestral roots and embrace their heritage. She is vice- president of the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society, Inc.-Willie Lee Gay H-Town Chapter which meets at Clayton Library, every 2nd Saturday of the month at 10:30 a.m. The group’s primary task is to nurture the interest and collaboration of genealogical and family history. Blacklock-Sloan believes, “We need to know who we are and where we come from to get a sense of identity!”

As Blacklock-Sloan takes inventory over her life, she realizes that everything she has done has led her to the current phase that she is in. “It takes some people a lifetime to figure out what they want to do – but I’m blessed because I finally

get a chance to do what I love,” she said. She also admitted that she was inspired by Selma’s civil rights activist Amelia Boynton’s statements.

“Stop saying you’re standing on the shoulders of those who came before you - get to work!” She expressed one of her main goal’s in life to is to let people know she was here. She said, “If you’re living in Houston, you need to know the city’s history - especially the African-American history because it’s not in the textbooks.” Continuing she exclaimed, “The history that’s in there now is distorted. Our rich history has always been omitted and stolen, so it’s time to set the record straight and get it out there.”

Throughout the years, Blacklock-Sloan’s work has enabled her to become an influential historian of Texas’ AfricanAmerican history and culture. She is definitely making her presence known and leaving an imprint that will last for generations to come.

To date, she is responsible for 26 state and county historical markers which include: the Rev. Jack Yates, Bethel Baptist Church, Phillis Wheatley High School, Olivewood Cemetery, Houston Negro Chamber of Commerce and the Acres Homes community. Additionally, she is also responsible for twelve City of Houston Protected Landmark designations. Tentatively, she is seeking to reach a goal of 50 landmarks.

Over the years, Blacklock-Sloan has presented local workshops on African-American family research and has been featured in several newspapers and publications. She has also appeared on Great Day Houston segments and discovered talk show host Debra Duncan’s maternal and paternal ancestors.

For over a decade she has served

as a judge at Texas History Day, an annual event held in Austin. She has authored and edited articles for the African- American Handbook of Texas. Other past projects include a collaborative effort creating interpretative panels at the Bethel Church Park located in Freedmen’s in the Fourth Ward and the Bernardo Plantation Project in Waller County, Texas which entailed researching and locating enslaved persons and their descendants.

Blacklock-Sloan’s memberships include the Texas State Historical Association and Phillis Wheatley Metropolitan Alumni, Association of Professional Genealogists and Ex-Students Association. She is also a board member of Friends of Emancipation Park and Houston Arts and Media.

For her outstanding contributions to Texas, she has received an array of awards for her, “her preservation and volunteer efforts”. A snippet of those accolades include: 2007 MVP Harris County Historical Commission Award, 2010 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Lullelia Walker Harrison Dove Award, 2011 YMCA Minority Achiever Award, 2012 Married Ladies Social Art & Charity Club Pioneer Lady of Distinction Award, 2014, Phillis Wheatley Legacy Torchbearer Award and First Shiloh M.B.C. Annual Women’s Day Honoree.

Just last year, Blacklock-Sloan was the recipient of a diversity scholarship from the National Trust for Preservation Conference hosted in Washington, DC. Blacklock-Sloan is encompassed with a gallery of friends who both inspire and encourage her historical quests. One of her mentors of whom she holds in high regards is Mrs. Willie Lee Gay. Gay was a

former Texas history teacher for 30 years. She is responsible for getting her involved in the Harris County Historical Commission and other history organizations. She also acknowledged historian Mrs. Patricia Smith-Prather, archeologist and anthropologist Dr. Carol McDavid and her colleagues on the Harris County Historical Commission who support her endeavors of doing historical markers. Lastly, she thanks the staff at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, Clayton Library and the Harris County Archives for their invaluable assistance with her research.

Blacklock-Sloan is thankful for her family, which she expressed an undying love for their continued support in her efforts. She said, “I have a great love of family!”

“It’s a blessing when you know where you come from and who you’re related to” she expressed.

It comes as no surprise that she is, “the griot” in her family. Thus, she encourages anyone who will listen to her to, “Listen to your elderly family members who want to give that history to you – because it’s

important!” To that regard, she has been able to trace her roots back to six generations; and is anxiously unearthing more as the days go by.

She was recently, featured in a documentary entitled, “Blacklock”. The film highlights her joyous voyage and determined quest to discover her ancestors.

She is the mother of two sons and grandmother of three, “bright and delightful grandchildren” by her own admission. Although her husband passed away three years ago, she informed me he was one of her biggest supporters.

While the humbled BlacklockSloan does not consider herself a historian, African-American News&Issues declares that she is not only a Texas historian, but a living legend at best! We salute her for every genealogical uncovering that she unmasks and every historical mark she makes. We the body of Booker T. Washington are proud to acknowledge a great accomplishment from one of our own, Daniel Phillips.

Daniel has has just received an outstanding and prestigious scholarship from ROTC (marines option). The scholarship is worth $180,000, and will enable him to serve in the military five years or more after he has finished college.

The process that Daniel had to go through in order to earn this honor was long and arduous. He has been interviewed by the commanding marine officers of Houston, has endured an intense physical fitness test, written numerous essays, and went through time consuming medical and background checks.

having the opportunity to be able to serve in the Marines, right after fulfilling his duty at college, an opportunity that very few get.

Daniel felt that it just wouldn’t be right if he didn’t have the chance to acknowledge the love and support from his brothers, Carlos Phillips and Kenny White.

Daniel replied, “I’d really like thank my brother Carlos for putting me in the ROTC program and my brother

Kenny who encouraged me as he served in the US army.”

“Both of my brothers inspired me in many different ways and thus led me to an overflowing desire to join the marines.”

Daniel also wanted to pay his respects to his mentor and ROTC commander, Commander Johnson for walking him down the right track.

Daniel’s parents say that they have always expected him to do great things in life

Before Daniel passes the patton he has some words of wisdom for the underclassmen. “First to the freshman: that don’t take your first two years of high school for granted. It may seem like it is all fun and games but it’s not.

Your first and second year you really need to work your butt off, so when you have that high GPA and start taking upper level classes you can afford to take a B or even a C. For the juniors: keep your options open. Don’t just say ‘I want to go to this school’.

Excellence has been an ongoing theme throughout the past week at Booker T. Washington High School, and the newspaper staff unanimously decided that we should keep the momentum going by recognizing one of the most outstanding teachers at this school, Mrs. Jennifer Charles.

Mrs. Charles is a teacher that wears many hats including: teaching Advanced Placement Social Studies classes, taking a leadership role as the head of the Social Studies Department, and acting as a counselor for her many students whom she cares for. Ms. Antonelli, the newspaper sponsor, commented that, “Mrs. Charles is an exceptional teacher. Her love

At Booker T. Washington High School, we want to promote the idea that students should lend a helping hand within the community. Many students’ view volunteering as time consuming or insignificant without even thinking about the positive aspects that come from it.

That kind of perspective is what we are trying to eliminate. With the guidance of our faculty and staff at Washington High School, we can encourage each other to become active volunteers. I interviewed a few teachers and asked them about the

good deeds they have done within their community. Mrs. Linda Lewis, Math teacher said, “On Sunday I tutor at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist church, I was an engineering club sponsor, and I assisted in a homeless outreach.” Mrs. Lakoya Yarborough, History teacher answered, “I volunteered in the American Red Cross, the February 1st Sit In, the Precious Pearls, and teaching kids.” Mr. Bradley Matthews, College advisor responded saying; “I’ve volunteered at the Houston Food Bank, the Animal

Shelter, and at college fairs to help with financial aid.” It all starts with teachers; their motivation can guide us on a path to something great.

Kids of our generation can be very inactive, but if they go out and take part in bettering the community, we can make a difference, and even save lives. Volunteering is more than just giving your time, it’s about giving back and investing into the community.

The more people that contribute, the better.

THE RISE OF THE PANTHERS (PART I)

This series is being issued to honor the Black Panther Party for SelfDefense on its 50th Anniversary.

There is no debate regarding the fact that the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense is the most iconic group in the history of African-American history. The Panthers influence resonates to this very day with several groups seeking to copy the groups signature dress and political platform; the vast majority of them, I might add, have failed miserably in their efforts. One of the primary reasons for their failure has been gross mis-understandings regarding the Panther’s history.

This series on the Panthers for Black History Month, which is taken from my forthcoming book --Creating Revolution as They Advance: The Revolutionary Years of the Black

Panther Party --- is intended to address many of the errors that have been made by copy-cat Panther groups by illuminating why the Panthers were created, who they were, and what were their real contributions to the areas of politics, self-defense, and social services. The latter is critically important as far too many people have forgotten the Panther’s social programs --- free breakfast for children, free lunch for children, free grocery giveaway, sickle-cell anemia testing/research, ambulance service --- and erroneously denigrated them to the level of a mere gun club.

to many, “Black Power” was birthed from the moderate and integrationist oriented Civil Rights Movement that was led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unfortunately for Dr. King, there was a supreme misunderstanding between Black and white activists regarding movement goals. According to Dr. King, for some reason, whites believed that once President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act (1964) and Voting Rights Act (1965) the movement was completed and the only thing needed was for AfricanAmericans to patiently wait for racial justice to occur. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reflected: [W]ith Selma and the Voting Rights Act one phase of development in the civil rights revolution came to an end. A new phase opened, but few observers realized it or were prepared for its implications. For the vast majority of white Americans, the past decade --- the first phase --- had been a struggle to treat the Negro with a degree of decency, not of equality. White America was ready to demand that the Negro should be spared the lash of brutality and coarse degradation, but it had never been truly committed to helping him out of poverty, exploitation or all forms of discrimination.

from the Southern sheriffs and forbade them more cruelties. But when this was to a degree accomplished, the emotions that had momentarily inflamed him melted away, When negroes looked for the second phase, the realization of equality, they found that many of their white allies had quietly disappeared.

Negroes felt cheated, especially in the North, while many whites felt that the negroes had gained so much it was virtually impudent and greedy to ask for more so soon.

Dr. King did his best to remind whites that President Johnson’s legislative acts merely secured theoretical equality; the subsequent stage, the exercise of equality, promised to be exponentially more difficult to ac-

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have significantly contributed to the number of graduates in our nation in critical areas. HBCUs make up just 3 percent of colleges and universities,

AUSTIN— Joseph Reese, representing Huston-Tillotson University as the campus King, added another jewel to his crown and earned a place in history when he captured the national 2016-2017 Mr. HBCU title this past weekend. Reese is the first HT student to earn the Historically Black College and University title during the Kings’ Leadership Conference

and Competition held in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Reese is a graduating senior from Somerville, Texas. He is a music education major with his sights set on becoming a recording artist, as well as pursuing his passion of a career as a middle- or high-school band director. Reese, a tenor in the HT Concert Choir, solidified his first place finish with a vocal performance of “Glory” by Common and John Legend.

“I am very excited about earning the title,” Reese said. “I am eager to lift the HBCU brand.”

The men’s leadership conference held over three

days concludes with the kings’ competition. The conference was founded in 2005 in order to celebrate African American males.

Reese is the son Josephine and the late Dock Reese.

As a historically black institution located in Austin, Texas, Huston-Tillotson University’s mission is to nurture a legacy of leadership and excellence in education, connecting knowledge, power, passion, and values. The University offers associate and master’s degrees in addition to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in more than 19 areas of study.
