Nowadays, sleeping around and not being married has become the norm. Yep, I know that married people do it, too, yet the same “old folk” rules apply. If you are married and sleeping around on your spouse without “benefits” you’re still a ho, just a married one. That’s not good either way, therefore, don’t do that. There is a slight difference in “ho-ology” when it comes to single folk however. At least married people who cheat can return to their “unsuspecting” spouses, but single folk return home to no one. It’s only when you wake up the next morning and realize that yo “toy” is gone is when you start analyzing what really happened. You vow not to do it again, but you do, especially with that one person who is the best you’ve ever had. They may be the best that 17 other people ever had, too, and the killer part of it is YOU KNOW THIS. You are afraid to take a chance on this person if they decided to settle down and ask you for your hand in marriage because you know their MO. Modus Operandi. Mode of Operation. You know that if they are fooling around WITCHOO, they may just be fooling around ON you.

You don’t know how to feel; your emotions are getting the best of you.

You’re angry, bitter, frustrated, and confused. Finally, you’ve come to the conclusion that “God don’t bless no mess” and have decided that “hoology doesn’t work no mo”.

Your body aches and you get knots in your stomach every time

you think of being with that special person, but common sense is slowly returning to prominence. You start walking, exercising, praying and fasting; anything to replace the void that has you in withdrawals. The problem is, the more you fight it, the more it controls you but you keep on fighting. Eventually, you’ll win.

You’ll find a way to stay away from the one who is no good for you.

The one who gave you “stuff” that you’ll probably never have again. It is during this time that you reflect on what has happened in your life and you start to take inventory.

That will take weeks, or months, and the result will be the same. There are no grounds for bringing civil rights charges against the officer.

The standard script was rolled out the instant former North Charleston cop, Michael Slager, gunned down the unarmed Walter Scott. The script in the Scott killing, as in nearly all the others from Michael Brown to Eric Garner, is made possible for the same real, compelling and perverse time-tested reasons. It starts with the victim.

Chances are the victim will have some kind of criminal record as was the case with Scott, and no matter how petty, or how long past, every detail of it will be endlessly looped before the public. The crude and clumsy message is that he was a bad

guy. The dangling implication is that he, his past, and his alleged criminal actions are the reason he’s dead.

This, of course, is all based solely on the police reports and statements.

This is how it was initially tailored and massaged with Scott.

He has a violent criminal, on the run, who when cornered ran, then fought, and then attacked Slager and he had no choice but to kill to protect his life. The evidence supported this version. Other officers at the scene supported this version. And police officials supported this version. The version we know was a bald-faced lie.

Not one person in the legions of talking heads that have dissected the ins and outs of the Scott killing horror has disputed the point that if Feidin Santana hadn’t been there with his cell phone camera and recorded the horror, the official lie would have stood. There have been

11 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina since January. Some are just as dubious as the Scott killing. Yet not one of them resulted in even a hint of a dispute of the official version. The trumped up lies to work are dependent on a compliant media that will not ask too many questions about the official version no matter how much of a stretch it is to believe.

It’s getting so predictable you can mail the script in. A young, or not so young, unarmed AfricanAmerican is gunned down by a cop. It makes brief news -- except the news is not really news but the script. He was reaching for the officer’s gun, or his Taser or his nightstick. The officer feared for his life. The officer had no choice but to use the required deadly force. Police officials will hold a press conference and solemnly promise there will be a vigorous internal investigation. The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave. The investigation finds that the officer acted appropriately given the deadly threat to his life. The officer has been returned to duty. The case is officially closed. The only wrinkle to this pro-forma script is that if there’s enough of a howl about it, the FBI

‘Talkin Loud and Sayin Nothin’: Manhood, Race & Culture

onsidering my line of work as somewhat of a bourgeoning public intellectual who has focused his entire career upon examining the history, contemporary plight, and future of AfricanAmericans, it is common for me to participate in roundtable discussions, debates, radio shows, lectures, seminars, and lectures. Although it is always encouraging to exchange ideas with others with similar interests, even if those interests oppose African-American liberation, there is a downside to such moments. Most notably, the propensity of many “black leaders” to rely upon antiquated ideas, formulas, constructs, and solutions to current problems.

Now please do not take my criticism regarding the rehashing of the ideas of Malcolm X, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, and a host of African-American luminaries as an indicator that I do not possess a reverence for prior intellectual thought. My position as a History Professor hopefully dissuades you from such a conclusion. However, the aforementioned leaders have been deceased for nearly fifty years.

It may be time to refocus our vision to tackle new millennium race issues.

Now I am certain that you are thinking that the race problems that the aforementioned leaders combated are still prevalent in contemporary society. So we should not stray from the well-worn path that Malcolm X or your preferred leader traveled.

I argue that it is the very fact that the problem is still in existence that signals the need to re-examine contemporary race issues. Unfortunately my perspective is not supported by many of today’s “black leaders” who are extremely comfortable reciting

antiquated rhetoric and solutions as if they are performing a one-man stage play throughout the nation. All the while, African-Americans economic suffering and political disorganization continues unabated.

I recently had the displeasure of interacting with the “international representative” of the New Black Panther Party and left that engagement totally flustered and bewildered by the reality that this individual had absolutely no idea what he was speaking about. However, he did repeatedly name drop and use rehearsed quotes that had little to do with our conversation. When I pressed him to explain his organizations political platform and stance, he began talking about the Nation of Islam’s program and made liberal use of several Malcolm X quotes.

As our conversation turned towards Ferguson, Missouri, the new Black Panther Party’s “international representative” used copious amounts of rhetoric and jargon about how his group was going to Ferguson to get some things straightened out. I then asked what seems to be a standard follow-up question of, “what are those things?” He flew into a rage and accused me of being an FBI informant that was trying to compromise his group’s ‘mission’.

And I am certain that you can guess that he then used Malcolm X’s metaphor of me being a ‘House Nigga’.

I could do little other than laugh at his diversion that was most certainly offered as a means of concealing the reality that neither he, nor those he represented, really had any real tangible goal for their current activism.

They were quite simply ‘talking loud and saying nothing.’

What makes this matter all the more troubling is that while so-called ‘black leaders’ such as the one mentioned above banter and boast in front of audiences and cameras in the name of Black America, they are having little, if any, effect upon the very real issues facing African-American men, women, and children.

What Happened to Respect

C

arter’s Laws for Civility composed by Stephen Carter states that, “We must express ourselves in ways that demonstrate our respect for others.”

I agree with him in this aspect because society judges us according to the way that we act and present ourselves. Although many members of the Black community are aware of this element, there are a great number of those amongst us who are not.

And if they are aware of it, they definitely are not acting like it nor are they teaching their children to exemplify it. In dealing with many youth, I am noticing a constant trend and pattern. There is a grave lack of respect nowadays, not just for authority figures and elders but all the way around.

While it is true that a parent can not be with his or her child 24-hours a day or seven days a week; the training, values, morals, ethics and teachings taught and practiced in the home should in some way, shape, form or fashion present itself whether a parent is present or not. This causes me to wonder, “What has happened to respect in our communities?”

According to Merriam Webster respect is, “an act of giving particular attention or high or special regard or the quality or state of being esteemed; a feeling of admiring someone or something that is good, valuable, important, etc.; a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in an appropriate way or a particular way of thinking about or looking at something.”

There was a time when not only children respected adults and their elders, but respect was given from one individual to the next. But this is just something that is not seen and practiced very often in this new generation and it bothers me terribly. Because not

only do people not have respect for their neighbors but some people appear that they do not even have respect for themselves.

And if a person does not respect themselves, then they definitely will not have any regard for you or I. It is a sad case, I believe.

Which is why I feel that we should go back to instilling simple values within our own children. Believe it or not, it really does go a long way! Because long gone are the days where children were taught the basic fundamentals of respect from the community and leaders within it.

These days it is almost as if it’s, “every man for himself.”

We MUST Understand, that respect may be interpreted in many different shapes, forms and fashions. The respect that I am referring to is not just bottled into speech but actions, common decency and attire. There are many different facets and outlets that the term “respect” itself may be connected with.

As it is, if any race or ethnicity should be able to see a grave indifference in the way that one race is treated versus others, it should be African-Americans.

With the latest developments in the media word, it is no secret that law enforcement officials and authorities have absolutely no regard for the Black life. So parents should understand that teaching their children simple values as “respect” are very necessary especially in the day and times of which we live in.

With that being stated, our children’s minds are so polluted with commercialized versions of reality; that they believe that the attire that is seen on television is suitable for everyday living.

It is not! Parents need to explain to their children that television is television. The styles, speech patterns and actions demonstrated on television should not be an example to our children as a

guideline for living.

Parents should strive to be their own children’s role models.

Furthermore, there is a serious need for parents and guardians to go back to teaching and training their own children and stop allowing television, friends and others to raise and train them.

Because the lifestyles that are displayed on television do not always promote good, decent and wholesome living.

Back in the day when I was growing up, it was simple: “no ma’am, yes ma’am, no sir, yes sir”. But these days it appears as if these responses are some form of a foreign language. My parents would not allow me to respond to my elders saying, “Uh, huh, ok, what,” or neither of the responses that these young people respond to adults. But then again, you can’t blame the children, because children don’t raise themselves.

It is up to the parents and those who are in respected positions to teach children how they are to behave. The only thing about that is that some of these parents who are adults do not even know how to show respect and if they do know, obviously they have forgotten.

Concluding, I would just like to reference the words of Eldridge Cleaver who suggested that, “Respect commands itself and can neither be given nor withheld when it is due.”

Therefore, if we do not begin to change some of the things and ways that our community behaves then the future of our community will truly be lost.

for Reform, African-American women were, “three times more likely than White women to be jailed or imprisoned.” Therefore, if one was to take into account the conclusion from the statistics of these reports and studies, it is clearly evident that the female AfricanAmerican incarceration rate has doubled within a matter of seven years. This is a devastating reality as it relates to the Black community.

Adjusting to the Free Society When considering women who are incarcerated there are a variety of factors to think on. Just as there are many ills that people associate with males who have been in prison, women deal with a wide range of elements as well. Just to list a few: sexual assault, mental and physical issues, as well as family and socioeconomic problems are all limbs that extend from the branch of imprisonment, and that is just to state the least.

Sexual assault has been reported as a major problem amongst female inmates within prisons. Health issues and sexually transmitted diseases is another ailment that can often result, due to sexual assaults.

These ills have a tendency to cause female prisoners to suffer with mental and emotional stability once released from imprisonment.

Thereby, causing another disadvantage in regards to them being able to effectively adjust and become a productive citizen.

Another factor that should be considered is the fact that former inmates are already marked with a brand. One study proposes that, “Within three years of being released, 67% of ex-prisoners re-offend and 52% are re-incarcerated.” A contributing factor to this rate is because once female prisoners are released they have very little resources available to them. Oftentimes, these women are not eligible for welfare or subsidized housing and not to mention employment. Finding a job is a problem that many face simply because they have a criminal record.

With these odds against them it has a tendency to result in many of them returning to the only lifestyle they know, which often leads to re-imprisonment.

This is an element that should be looked at because these exoffenders are not just strangers; they are our mothers, aunts, sisters, cousins and other loved ones.

Therefore, implementing programs and creating institutions that will serve to allow them the capability and knowledge needed to adjust to society should be a consideration for leaders within the community.

Counseling for these individuals and their families is another option that could help reduce the ratio of returning ex-offenders.

With the increase of female incarceration in the African-American community, measures should be taken to educate the current generations about the hardship that imprisonment can place on a family.

Parents, educators and leaders of the African-American community have a duty to ensure that problematic areas within its race are identified; so that the youth are made aware of potential hazards that they face.

Research has shown in times past that there has been a great impact in the lives of the children whose parents were incarcerated during their childhood. In some cases, children of these families develop and lead a life of destruction which ultimately translates into imprisonment for them as well.

Noticeable Disparities between Races Understanding the root of the problem is crucial in reference to the female incarceration rate within the Black community. Accordingly, research shows that, drugs and violent offenses remain two of the most common charges that AfricanAmerican women are prosecuted and imprisoned for. Drug offenses have been attributed as being over half of the reason for female African-American incarceration, in recent years. The Sentencing Project Research and Advocacy

for Reform indicated telling racial disparities in comparison to drug offenders.

Its studies showed that, about 14 million Whites and 2.6 million African- Americans have reported using an illicit drug. However, “five times as many Whites are using drugs as African-Americans, yet African-Americans are sent to prison for drug offenses at 10 times the rate of Whites.”

Additionally the Sentencing Project revealed that, “AfricanAmericans represent 12% of the total population of drug users, but 38% of those arrested for drug offenses, and 59% of those in state prison for a drug offense; and African-Americans serve virtually as much time in prison for a drug offense (58.7 months) as whites do for a violent offense (61.7 months).”

Concluding, Netflix has released a series that has given the world a look into the life of incarcerated women. “Orange is the New Black” is a show that demonstrates the inner scenes behind prison walls. The series is birthed out of the concept of an inmate’s memoirs. It gives an account of Piper Kerman’s 15-month sentence to a federal women’s prison and the different experiences encountered while confined.

The role is played by a character named Piper Chapman who is a resident of New York City. The series exemplifies real life situations that occur in prisons throughout the nation. The show has caused people around the nation to have a different view of the way that female inmates are treated within the criminal justice system.

Thus, members of the Black community would be wise to pay attention to this trend that has become an epidemic within the Black race. After all, imprisoned females are not strangers and neither are the children they leave behind or birth while imprisoned.

AUSTIN - The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) will host San Marcosarea employers, human resource professionals, business owners and managers at the Texas Business Conference employment law update on Friday, May 1, at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center. The conference will provide valuable information for employers and business owners concerning the legal issues associated with operating a business in Texas.

He is wanted for felony failure to comply with civil commitment requirements and is considered at high risk to reoffend.

BEAUMONT - An East Texas man and woman have been charged with federal income tax violations in the Eastern District of Texas.

Derek Cornelius Briscoe, also known as Terrance Briscoe, also known as Derek Anderson, 36, of Jasper, Texas, and Angela Dunaway, also known as Angela Coudrain, 45, an inmate in Jefferson County Jail in Beaumont, Texas, appeared before U.S. Magi. Briscoe and Dunaway were indicted on Mar. 5, 2015, and charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Briscoe was also charged with eight additional counts.

SAN ANTONIO - More African-American and Hispanic students are graduating from high school, and Texas is leading the improved picture nationally, according to data released Thursday by the Texas Education Agency.

Nationally, the four-year graduation rate for AfricanAmerican and Hispanic students jumped by nearly 4 percentage points from 2011 to 2013. Texas has the highest graduation rates for the two student groups in the class of 2013. Since 2010, new measures have been enacted in twenty-two states around the country that would make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to register or vote. As we celebrate and commemorate the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, lawmakers vowed not to sit idly by as these unprecedented laws try to turn back the clock and erect barriers to voting for military, disabled, minority, young, elderly and lowincome Americans.

HOUSTON - Recently, the Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church located at 8407 Carver Rd., 77088, held a celebration service for newly elected Pastor A. L. Douglas, Jr. Family members, esteemed ministers and pastors traveled from near and afar to join in on the congratulatory praise with the Star Bethel family.

Rev. John F. Foster, Rev. Dywaine Robinson, Rev. Michael Black, Rev. Harold Hamilton, Rev. Arthur King, Rev. Michael Blackshear, Pastor Elijah Jasper, III, D. Min, Pastor Dwayne Carpenter, Rev. Marvin Grant and Rev. William Anderson are amongst a few of the ministers and pastors that were on program serving in different capacities. These co-laborers in the Gospel Ministry spiritually encouraged Pastor and Lady Douglas as they embark upon a new journey within the Christian community. Melodious songs of praise were rendered by the Star Bethel MBC and St. Luke MBC choirs.

Dr. Stanley T. Hillard, pastor of St. Luke M.B.C. delivered the Spoken Word of God. He used as a theme, “Conditioned for Success” and referenced Joshua 1:1-6 as a scripture text for his message. Dr. Hillard preached a pure unadulterated message geared toward promoting, strength, encouragement and wisdom for the newly elected pastor. During the sermon, Dr. Hillard ran parallel between the life of Moses and his successor Joshua.

He explained that the book of Joshua, “begins with tragedy and ends with triumph.” Once Dr. Hillard dissected and explained his text, he took off to a hill called Calvary where Jesus Christ was crucified. However, he did not conclude his delivery, until he had majority of the congregation standing

to their feet witnessing, clapping and waving their hands; as he preached about the resurrection of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Following the conclusion of the sermon, the charge to the church, pastor and prayer of installation was given. Lady Eleanor Hillard of St. Luke MBC offered words of encouragement and presentations were contributed to Lady Pearline Douglas from Sis. Laitchere Mathis. Once the service ended, attendees were served dinner by the Star Bethel Culinary Ministry. Overall, the celebration was a success as smiling faces were seen by those exiting from the sanctuary.

As a lad he received his elementary education in the state of Louisiana. He went on to graduate from G.W. Griffin High School. Douglas was drafted into the United States Army in 1970 and served there for two years.

Growing up, Douglas was no stranger to the order of the body of Christ; as he received salvation at an early age. After experiencing a remarkable encounter with the Lord, he adhered to the call to preach the Gospel of Christ.

District 18-6A Girls Soccer Coach of the Year Eisenhower High School’s Sabrina Ball

ALDINE ISD - Sabrina Ball from Eisenhower High School has been voted the District 18-6A Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year. Under Ball’s leadership, the girls’ soccer

team had an incredible run this year.

Ben Ibarra aplauds Coach Ball making changes that improved the team’s performance. Ibarra serves as principal at the campus.

“Coach Ball has brought our girls’ soccer team to a higher level,” Ibarra said. “Everyone at Eisenhower High School is proud of her accomplishments.”

But the humble coach lauds the student athletes for their dedication to the sport. Ronnie Nicks serves as assistant coach.

According to Ball, the team had many returning athletes this year.

She saw much potential in this. She wanted that experience to strengthen the rest of the team as well as develop the new talent.

“We entered district games undefeated with a winning record of

5-0-1,” Ball said. “This is something the Lady Eagle’s soccer team has never done before.

This small accomplishment tremendously boosted our confidence. Throughout the rest of the season, my girls played with fire and tenacity.“ The team fell one game short of making school history and advancing to the playoffs. The team ended a historic season with a 10-7-1 overall record. The program has come from being last in the district over the years to competing for play-off spots for years to come.

“What we did this year will have a positive affect on the girls’ soccer program at Ike for a long time,” Ball added. “It is satisfying that all the hard work paid off. To have the success we had is special.”

HISD Working to Keep Top Teachers

T

eaching is a true calling.

As a former elementary school teacher and principal, I certainly understand that teaching can be hugely rewarding, but it’s certainly not easy — especially in an urban school district.

The job is tough, and we strive each year to recognize and reward our teachers and school leaders in multiple ways.

As the largest school district in Texas and the seventh largest in the country, HISD employs more than 11,000 teachers. Despite the challenges they face, the vast majority of them — four out of every five — will be back on the job next fall. The retention rate is even higher for our most experienced and effective teachers.

HISD’s annual teacher attrition rate is only slightly higher than the state and national average — about 16 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics and the Texas Education Agency.

The rate also is on-par with some of our surrounding districts including Spring Branch ISD, which reports a 21.9 percent turnover rate, according to the TEA. And it’s well below the rate reported by popular area charter schools that are frequently celebrated in the pages of the Houston Chronicle such as KIPP and Yes Prep — 39.2 percent and 30.3 percent, respectively.

So you can imagine my surprise when I opened the newspaper on a recent Sunday and saw an editorial suggesting our district would never be truly great until we stopped “hemorrhaging” good teachers.

A 2014 report from the Alliance for Excellent Education found that roughly 500,000 teach-

ers leave the profession each year, an attrition rate that comes at an annual cost of $2.2 billion. The departure rate can reach as high as 50 percent for teachers in the first five years of their career — a statistic that can be dramatically reduced by providing new teachers with extensive support and mentoring.

That is exactly what HISD is doing. Through the Effective Teachers Initiative, we are transforming the way we recruit and select new teachers. We are using smart recruiting and staffing, individualized teacher support, meaningful feedback and career pathways with higher salaries to find and keep the very best teachers and ensure not only their success, but the success of their students.

HISD created the Office of School Leadership, which is a small team devoted to developing and implementing a structure that ensures all educators have the support and feedback they need to be successful. We encourage our very best teachers to become coaches and mentors for their campus counterparts — and we pay them to do it. For the last two years, the retention rate for these top-performing teachers-turned coaches has been 95 percent.

We also reward our most effective educators through the ASPIRE Award program, which aims to recognize the impact of those who are accelerating student progress. This year alone, HISD awarded almost $22 million to 5,771 educators through the program. Now, we’re looking at revising the program to offer additional incentives — including sign-on and retention bonuses, summer training stipends and student growth compensation — at the district’s lowest-performing schools.

The Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development is starting each week dedicated to Seniors. Every Monday Seniors have the opportunity to participate in various activities involving arts and craft activities, health and wellness seminars and cooking tips, movies, game day to include bingo, dominos, spades, and more. African-American Adult Leadership Development

The African American Leadership Development Academy provides leadership development for professionals serving North Harris County and surrounding communities. This program was designed to provide hands on training for future leaders seeking growth in areas including: education, health, cultural awareness, community development, government, business, and public safety. Participants are expected to attend monthly sessions over the course of 8 months. Sessions are held on 1st Saturday (9am – 2pm), starting in October. Application packet available June 1st.
