Before I Lay it Down...

We fellers would pass out at the thought of it. I used to watch my children move inside of their momma’s stomach and would

often wonder how that would feel.

The closest I ever got to recreating the same thang is after I’ve eaten a pot of Julle’s world famous red beans and conebread. But having gas, I’m told, ain’t the same as being pregnant.

Women are strong.

My damn hip woulda been broken by now had I carried my children around on it while they were infants, but somehow even the smallest of mothers can balance they little bad-asses on their while cooking, vacuuming, ironing, and grocery shopping. I’m like “whatha hell?” Put that little heavy bastard down!” “Let’em crawl, walk, or

scoot his wittle ass on the flo.” But, noooooooooooo. Them mommas are gonna carry them babies until they five.

I’ve witnessed my momma cook, clean, and wash (dry and fold) clothes for all of us and still have enough energy to go to church 4-5 days a week and shout the church house down.

You know how sanctified people have/had church. Wasn’t no need of staring at yo watches or the clock on the wall. You weren’t leaving until errrrrrrrrrrbody “testified”, “sang they song”, “shouted”, “spoke to their neighbor 5 times”, and given 4.5

There is one thing, however, that makes women even stronger, (in my opinion), than any other thing in the world: their battle(s) against cancer.

In October, I walked the entire month in support of those women who won, fought, and lost their battles against this horrible disease. I’ve seen them lose their hair, breasts, strength, and energy over and over again, only to witness many of them stare cancer down and WIN. Most times, you

never hear them complain nor do you see them cry, no matter how much pain they’re in.

I dedicate this Spiveytorial to one of the strongest women I know, that’s my sister-in-law, Juanita Jackson.

She’s fought cancer and won. Today is her birthday. Her faith in Jesus Christ is what brought her through; she’ll testify to that. He rocked her in the “cradle of his arms”. “Aunt Juanita”, Happy birthday, honey.

May the Lord KEEP you strong. I can’t wait till yo 65th birthday next year! God bless, Goodnight, and keep yo families together.

ollowing the horrific attacks in Paris, France, the world was quick to condemn the tragedy and unite as one human family. This cowardly act against freedom of speech and freedom of expression is reprehensible to all sane people, but sadly, some have used it to exacerbate their already biased views. There is nothing that even hints that the vicious incidents in France are endorsed or embraced by most Muslims in the world. In fact, a police officer who was stationed outside the offices of Charlie Hebdo when he was gunned down was himself a Muslim. The murderous madmen who took his life and the lives of the other innocent souls are nothing but that -- madmen. But those who have become peddlers of Islamophobia use this catastrophe to try and justify their odious views already held against Muslims. They use other people’s pain and suffering to justify their own bigotry and bias.

It is the same sort of twisted logic that some apply when incidents of police brutality and excessive force

take place. Instead of addressing the root of the problem, they would rather attack those that raise awareness about the issues at hand. They use the terrible actions of a few bad apples to justify their own blatant bias against advocates for reform.

Thankfully, people can spot their hustle from a mile away.

Michael Brown’s body was in the street for hours in Ferguson, Missouri after he was shot and killed by police this summer. A 12-year-old child by the name of Tamir Rice was shot and killed by cops in Cleveland, Ohio after playing with a toy gun. In Staten Island, NY, there is clear videotape of officers using a brutal tactic that is banned by the police department itself on a father of six. He died. But instead of addressing these specific cases or looking at the policies/practices that led to these tragic incidents, some would rather spend time criticizing those of us that push for answers and accountability.

A former Mayor of NYC who quarreled with me the entire eight years he was in office, goes on

national television not to discuss methods of bringing police and communities together, but instead to attack me, Mayor de Blasio and even President Obama. Adding to this outrageous scenario is the fact that the reporter interviewing this former Mayor never challenges him, or asks him what we did to quote “poison the atmosphere.” It is nothing short of slander, vitriol and outright lies.

But then again, that’s what many of us had to deal with during his tenure in office. I suppose the message they are sending is that we don’t have the right to ever question police even as we discuss freedom of speech.

Meanwhile, a prominent rightwing group has tried to get major corporations not to support my organization, National Action Network (NAN), because they claim that we are somehow ‘anti-police’. It’s a good thing that many of our board of directors are chief executives in corporations and they know clearly what we represent. At the same time, a national conservative columnist recently stated that I somehow led

the case against the Duke lacrosse players who were falsely accused of rape back in 2006. I of course had no involvement in that case. But I suppose facts don’t matter when you are cynically using an agenda that has nothing to do with the issues being raised.

When some sort of devastation takes place, there are two kinds of responses we see: those who unite to work towards healing and reform, and those who use the tragedy to settle old political schemes.

O

ne of the more fascinating aspects of history is the truth found in the axiom “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” So I knew that in time, my people would respond to the recent rise of law enforcement officers’ terrorist activities. It was a moment that I eagerly awaited as it would serve as a significant sign that an important aspect of our history had returned. The recent rise of politicized armed Black militias’, for purposes of self-defense and preservation, is little more than an extension of an often ignored, if not forgotten, aspect of the storied history of African-American activism.

As a historian, I find it amazing that the oppression that birthed the founding of America by luminaries such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are still occurring today. This recent rise of AfricanAmericans arming themselves against marauding police officers reminds the politically astute of similar moments where Black activists ‘picked up the gun’. The spirit of the Deacons for Defense and Justice and the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense are all reflected with these recent decisions

by Black activists to ‘pick up the gun’ for self-preservation purposes.

Obviously, this recent rise of armed, yet politicized, Black activists is greatly influenced by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale decision to create the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in Oakland, California, on October 15, 1966. I smiled when a recent article announced the creation of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club; I am absolutely certain that the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense Minister of Defense would smile at that show of respect.

Despite what many white opponents, as well as scared Negroes, seek to dismissively brush away, the Huey P. Newton Gun Club is operating out of this nation’s oldest tradition of resisting tyranny and embracing the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness ‘by any means necessary.’

During a recent debate regarding this matter, I was confronted by a self-righteous American patriot who relied solely upon recycled rhetoric and banter as he attempted to prove to prove an illogical point. I have learned that such moments reach absurdly ridiculous levels when such individuals find themselves on the losing end of the debate. This verbal contest was no different as my opponent who had become exasperated by my logic and frustrated at his inability to sway an attentive audience relied upon an old racist dodge; the shouting of “If you don’t like it here, well then go back to Africa.” I was well prepared for this statement; I knew that he would eventually spew it at me. Put simply, I was familiar with this road and therefore prepared to counter what was for him a last ditch effort to win the debate. My preparation allowed me to coolly retort, “You wouldn’t tell that to George Washington.” Stunned at my retort, the middle-aged white man just stormed off as even he was aware that it was Washington, this nation’s first President, and beyond that its initial hero, who when faced with a lesser degree of oppression than what African-Americans are facing today from a tyrannical British government led his people in ‘picking up the gun’ to declare war and expel the British from what they were now terming their land.

So I applaud this group of individuals who are following in this nation’s founding fathers footsteps and refusing to stand idly by while their brothers and sisters are being slaughtered by a tyrannical out of control police force that reminds one of the British troops that stormed this land nearly 250 years ago.

hroughout the years, my wife and me have been through a lot of changes. We have seen a lot of people come and go. We have even had our share of employees to go and come through the doors of African-American News&Issues, but there is one thing that has remained the same no matter who came and who went over the course of the last 20 years. That fact is that we have not backed down nor have we strayed away from our mission, goal and objective of, reporting current and historical realities that are affecting our communities. We believe that there is a significant need for this paper in the community and have heard from so many of the faithful and loyal readers of African-American News&Issues that you believe the same as well.

Therefore, we will hold true to our task and objective of keeping this paper as the “People’s Paper”!

The success of AfricanAmerican News&Issues as a publication thrives and depends on the members of the Black community.

We are only as successful as the people that continue to read us on a weekly basis. Because ultimately we are because you are and that is what makes up African-American News&Issues as a leading paper in the community that aims to report news throughout the community, city, state and nation with a Black perspective. Every newspaper or media source is designed to have its own unique niche that places that publication in a class by itself.

Some capitalize off of celebrities, cooking recipes, automobiles, models, entertainment industry, fashion, gossip and a plethora of

other industries. But, fortunately we allow and rely on the people that we feel are most important to the community to determine our level of success. So in this edition of African-American News&Issues we honor and salute the faithful and loyal readers of the paper, because it is your paper. Thus, every time you read or pick a paper up, submit content to the production team, make an inquiry about something in the paper, support advertisers and take a general interest into this paper, it lets us know that something is being done right.

I said it from the beginning many years ago that people need a platform where they can see themselves and the people that they know. I mean normal, everyday people that you talk to and those who actually do things for you and your community. Years ago when this paper first started, my wife and I wanted to create something that would cater to the people that have the best interest of the AfricanAmerican community in mind and at heart. I mean of course, we enjoy looking through magazines, newspapers, brochures and other publications that have glamourous people that some will never meet only idolize off of. But at the end of the day, some of these same people will call the police or their security team on you if you even try to approach them in public.

Therefore, African-American News&Issues strives to highlight the many different facets of our community. We aim to report and provide the Black perspective on the way African-Americans view things happening in these United States and in a language that we feel

our community can understand. In previous editorials, I have expressed and addressed many key issues in our community that I believe we should always be mindful of.

Oftentimes, I repeat the same message or say the same things over in different ways. My purpose for doing this is hoping that someone will get the message. “Criminal for US and Justice for THEM” is one of those things that I like to repetitiously reiterate. Some things just explain themselves, this quote I believe is one of them. There are many things that African-Americans do and their lives are snatched away from them. Yet, on the other hand, our counterparts do it and all they get is a slap on the wrist and they call that justice! Another thing that I always write and talk about is the fact that we Africans living in America have power and do not even realize it. Accordingly, “the two most powerful tools that we have is ‘our money’ and ‘our vote’ and we should be really, really careful who we give them to.”

Because not everybody that looks like us really has our best interest in mind. With that being stated, “we should always strive to support those who support us!” I just think that there is something wrong with people that go out of the community to support people who care nothing for them and will not do anything for them, especially when there are people that are right here in the community that they could support.

Thereby, allowing the brain to exercise by thinking and considering what

is best for the community. We like to call it, “fair game”! We present the material and have a strong, firm and accurate stance after gathering all details.

Also, keep in mind -- White media outlets have a tendency to sugar coat things and provide information that will make the story appear juicier in the public’s eye. Whereas we strive to give the entire story from every willing side. For 20 years, we have been the power of Black Media and will continue to operate in that same fashion.

We encourage the reader to be mindful and learn how to differentiate between media sources. The difference between the Black media, AfricanAmerican News&Issues and the White media is that we are not here to make anyone famous nor do we half step on our reporting game. We are here to assist in getting the Black community to get to where it needs to be by addressing factors, eliminating the non-factors and offering solutions.

Moving forward, we believe that the time has come that we should support each other. We invite out faithful and loyal readers to allow us to help you as you help us. Doing so will ensure that everyone is working toward one unified goal which would serve to solidify the strength of the Black community, family, educational system and many more varying fields.

To all the National Newspapers Publishers Association (NNPA) media, we urge you to stop talking down on publications that are not up to the standards, that you feel they should be. Because it is a noticeable fashion that not every one and every entity will operate on the same scale.

Media facets should seek to focus on what needs to be done to fix the issues and get them fixed rather than attacking one another. A word of advice is to, “address what’s actual and factual and stop trying to target others, because you never really know who is there to help you”.

As far as the surrounding cites and towns, please rest assure that we are aware of what is going on in your areas. Why? Because many of them are on the outside looking in and we are on the inside looking out.

So just remember, we are like Wi-fi... we are everywhere staying connected and keeping you connected. Though we owe no one an explanation, if you do research, you will find that we are more reliable than our competitors. Therefore, we are here to inform you and keep you in the loop of what is happening right before your eyes.

Continuing, for years African-American News&Issues has maintained the title of being the widest circulated and read newspaper with a Black perspective.

With an inception that started out as a neighborhood publication, African-American News&Issues has multiplied into a reputable state newspaper that caters to the needs of the African-American community.

As it relates to distribution we have criss-crossed this state spreading news that relates to the Black community to keep our readers informed on a weekly basis. Since our initial existence, the circulation numbers that we possess have placed us in a class by itself.

Nevertheless, we are aware that as the world continues to advance to suit the times, so must we.

Considering that this dispensation of time in the world is controlled by modern technological advances, AfricanAmerican News&Issues has made a vow that we will not be left behind. Equipped with a new, improved and interactive website that is large and taking charge.

We are determined to keep our faithful and loyal readers up to date with the latest issues, trends, developments and details pertinent to the Black community.

Prior to launching our latest website, Web Developer Michael Skelton of Meekographics suggested to the African-American News&Issues staff a certain level of expectancy for the site.

With a professional resume and references to compliment the work that he does, he calculated that A-AN&I would be at a certain rate by the end of the summer. However, after launching on December 04, 2014 and less than two months later Skelton returned to A-AN&I with a report that surpassed even his own expectations.

Firstly, A-AN&I within this short amount of time is ranked as number two in ranks, according to the Google registry for Black News. Therefore, we give our faithful and loyal readers a thumbs up because we know that if it wasn’t for everyone of you we would not be at the level, wherein we currently sit.

Additionally A-AN&I, dropped 1 million and is now ranked in the United States at 1.2 and 1.7 globally.

Furthermore, we are working everyday to improve the various functions of the website, to ensure that it is attractive to our readers, sponsors, advertis-

A-AN&I has begun incorporating videos from our partner at the Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development’s monthly business networking luncheons, covered and featured events.

Tentatively, we will be offering our readers a sneak preview into our live and exclusive interviews as well as snippets from other events that A-AN&I covers. Other enhancements that have been made to the site rest in the form of allowing patrons: the ability to comment from Facebook, Twitter and other social medias and the ability to post directly to social media outlets as posts are updated to the website.

Concluding, as we celebrate this 20th edition of service to the community and the people in it, we would like to express our sincere thanks.

History of African-American News&Issues

In the mid 90’s, chairman of the Acres Home Citizens Chamber of Commerce, Roy Douglas Malonson along with wife and partner Shirley Ann sought after a publication that would be by the people and for the people.

Pursuant, Roy contacted several of the existing Black publications at an attempt to produce and generate a quality newspaper that would cater to typical residents of the African-American community; most of whom were often overlooked in other publications. Despite Roy’s continued desire to work with existing newspapers to create a true Black paper with a Black voice, none of the publications desired an interest in such a publication.

Eager and determined to provide the community with a newspaper that would give African-Americans a voice to be heard and a place to see themselves, the dynamic duo initiated Acres Home Citizens’ News which was locally published

by Malonson Company in February of 1996. The paper developed an audience as the “official voice of Acreage Homes reporting on schools, churches, businesses, and community.” Within four months the community paper was noticeably a rampant success. The name of the paper was changed from Acres Home Citizens’ News to reflect the accurate name of the base home-front location of which the newspaper was established Acreage Homes Citizens’ News.

In September of 1996, the name of the paper was changed to Citizens’ News which expanded its circulation from the Acreage Home Community to include other Black communities in North Houston including: Bordersville, Carverdale, Trinity Gardens,

Independence Heights, Scenic Woods and Settegast.

As the newspaper was in its developmental stages it underwent various styles, designs and formats which can be visibly noted from the premier introduction of the first volume up until its current style and design.

Another name change was implemented into the publication that began to make its presence known within Houston’s North side. In February of 1997 the name was changed from Citizens’ News to Acres Home Citizen with an emphasis of being the link to North Houston AfricanAmerican communities.

In May of 1997, the company because of the rapid demand for such a unique style of publication initiated the inclusion of a much broader spectrum. As a result, the paper that had been originally formatted and designed to target the Acreage Home community upgraded its name to reflect its circulation area and accommodate the ever-growing demand for the neighborhood oriented coverage that it provided to its audience. Thus, AfricanAmerican Neighborhood News evolved. As the paper continued to thrive in its enhancements, revisions and formation the need to report news within the Black community proved to be beneficial towards the ultimate focus of its design.

However, the company soon realized that not only was ‘news’ pertinent to the Black community, but the issues that consumed it were just as vital. Ultimately, resulting in a name change that would reflect just that: AfricanAmerican Neighborhood News & Issues; which not only reported news that affected individuals of its audience but issues that were

often overlooked and swept under the rug by other publications. This format opened up the platform to present coverage of: injustices, accomplishments, acknowledgements and recognition to members of the AfricanAmerican community that were not otherwise reported and featured in other publications within the same industry.

Additionally, within the same dispensation, October 1997 the Black Neighborhood Marketplace was introduced within the publication. This feature was an added avenue to local businesses and establishments with emphasis on African-American patrons as a target market to where such places were located. The newspaper started out as a monthly publication and then went to a bi-weekly newspaper until finally the demand was so great that the company had no other option but to make it a weekly publication.

As the newspaper continued to increase its presence in the Houston area the name was changed to AfricanAmerican News&Issues to suit and accommodate the expansion of the circulation that followed. Within a matter of four years the once community paper had become one of the widest circulated and read newspapers’ in the State of Texas with a Black perspective; increasing its audience to over a million readers. Over the years, African-American News&Issues has kept a reputation that has allowed the readership to be informed of entertainment, educational, local, state, regional, religion, community news and events and business related news and issues.

Addressing Current & Historical Realities Affecting our Communities

B

efore we started this newspaper and integration came in and all of the Black newspapers were just going along to go along. There wasn’t a really, really a so-called Black people’s paper. I went to quite a few of them and asked them to go back to their mission and just be Black.

They told me, “It’s a New Day, an integrated society and we can’t be who we are!” So we decided to start a community-based paper. We started using the name Acres Home Citizen News just to be a community paper for the people to have a voice. Well once we did that, then

Studewood liked it, Fifth Ward liked it, Sunny Side – everybody liked what we were doing and everybody wanted the paper. Which forced it to grow everywhere. Because the same thing that affects the Blacks in Acres Home are the same issues and pain that affect Black folks all over this city, state and nation. So when we jumpstarted the paper, they had a voice and a newspaper that was actually dealing with these issues and talking about them. All of this became our foundation. By our growth, we went from Acres Home to Citizens News, I mean we changed the name several times

as indicated in the history of the company and displayed in the hall upon entering the doors to our office.

We had to find a name that would be permanent. This decision led to African-American News&Issues.

Though we have been through a lot of changes since the very beginning, it has always been about helping the community and the people in the community.

But we are still going to be true to the people. Our paper is really not our paper and that’s where people make mistakes. You know I don’t have room to sit here and want to stick my chest out about this is my

paper. Because that’s just it, it’s not my paper, it is the people’s paper!

And we will never be successful if the people do not feel like this is their paper and their voice and that’s the mission. And this mission we must constantly stay focused on.

Therefore,it is our duty to ensure that every community feels that this is their paper and their voice. It’s about the people and the community and that’s the bottom line of why we did this.

Honestly, we didn’t want to be in no newspaper business, but the people forced us to grow and the people forced us to be in the newspa-

per business. Now, luckily we have went from monthly to weekly and we have been employing people throughout this last 20 years. We have Black writers, Black staff and are affecting over 12 Black people live’s that depend on our paper as far as their living and that’s something that we are very proud of. Ultimately we really press to make sure that people feel that this is their voice.

Although, there are a lot of other papers out there; we will be true to our mission which is addressing current and historical realities affecting our communities.

Interestingly one of the most endearing rudiments of AfricanAmerican News&Issues’ unique Black History 24-7-365 feature (sponsored by Shirley Ann’s Black Arts & Kollectibles Showroom), is information about the origins of uniquely named small towns that our history makers were born in. Therefore, our researchers go through great lengths to search the web to include towns such as Grand Cane, Louisiana, from whence came one of Black Houston’s church community’s well known entrepreneurs. We speak of Artrice Buealah Murray Whittaker whose long and very productive life was celebrated on April 21, 2007 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 1510 Pannell.

ber 3, 1927 to Robert B. Murray and Willia Mae Hadden in Grand Cane, Louisiana, a small settlement that started when four families decided to make a home in area around two wagon trails that intersected in the sparsely populated area known as the Grand Cane Territory in 1881. The Hobgood family deeded land to the New Orleans & Pacific Railway and had the Village of Grand Cane laid out in lots and streets. By 1899, the Village of Grand Cane

was incorporated.

The Village continued to thrive until the Great Depression of 1929. The downward spiral continued until the late 1950’s. Even so, Artrice attended high school in DeSoto Parish Training School in Mansfield, Louisiana, Class of 1948. He married Phillip Whittaker on October 3, 1954 and from this union five children were born.

He also had two sons from a previous marriage. Artrice was affectionately known as “Pumpkin” by her dear husband and friends.

The relationship between Artrice and Phillip was strong, loving and romantic. She was a great mother, sister, daughter, friend and neighbor. She was a gifted seamstress sewing for church members, making choir robes and wedding gowns, but really enjoyed sewing for her children. She did not believe in spreading gossip, but most importantly she loved the Lord. The failing health of her dear husband Phillip did not allow her to attend church services, but she praised the Lord from her home in front of the television while watch-

ing the Late Reverend Hill, T. D. Jakes and Joel Osteen. Artrice had a positive attitude about life in general and she never displayed doubt on God’s actions. In 2005, Artrice lost her baby sister, Lavern Pratt Murray and in 2006, Phillip Whittaker Jr., her first born child, also departed this life.

Artrice carried herself with pride and glory-proud of a lovely and talented son Philip Jr. who preceded her in death. Artrice departed this life peacefully in her sleep on April 14, 2007 with a loving family, husband and friends to carryon the lovely memories experienced from a spectacular lady. Left in God’s care are her children, Barrie Lee Hall Jr., Edwin Glen Hall, Loretta A. Whittaker (Petty), Cassandra Denise Whittaker (Haywood), Mary Janet Whittaker, Roslyn Annette Whittaker (Kovach); grandchildren, Eugene, Denise, Christina, April, Artrice, Matthew, Maurice and Brittany; sisters, Doris Murray Malone, Robert Mae Murray Johnson, and Grace Murray Adams; cousins, beloved neighbors and friends.
