HOUSTON – According to King Solomon, the third king of Israel, “there is nothing new under the sun,” as recorded in Ecclesiastes 1:9.

“The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” While many people all over the world assumed that history was made on January 20, 2009, when President Barack Obama was inaugurated into office as what majority of Americans have labeled as the first Black president of the United States of America, the truth is that thought couldn’t be further from the truth. The thing that many people do not understand is that President Barack Obama is not the first president that has the entitlement of being referred to as “Black,” especially according to the “one-drop rule,” which suggests that any person having a percentage of Black in his or her blood is considered Black.

UNDERSTANDING THE LAW: FELONY MENTAL HEALTH COURT Krystin Collins

and clinics in many neighborhoods and even with the world’s largest medical center in our city, diabetes remains at high levels in the Greater Houston area. One study found that one in ten Houstonians has diabetes.

Prediabetes is a newer diagnosis that means that the blood glucose is high, but not high enough to be considered fully diabetic. The numbers of people with prediabetes is growing as well, and untreated, this often leads the patient directly to a diabetes diagnosis.

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, and is often linked to being hereditary. When blood glucose (blood sugar) is uncontrolled, it can lead to a multitude of complications including blindness, hypertension, kidney disease, neuropathy (nerve disease), and/or lower extremity amputations. However, when people have their diabetes in a controlled state, the risk for developing complications is reduced.

With the health disparities that plague our community, some people, despite efforts of health care personnel, are still unaware of their diabetes risk level. On Saturday, March 25, 2017, the members of Acres of Angels coordinated the Diabetes Walk in Acres Homes at Lincoln Park. The event involved a walk on the track at the park and fitness

events, health care professionals, vendors and fun in the park’s recreation center. Additional activities included Zumba ®, Line Dancing, and Chair Volleyball. Over one hundred and fifty participants joined together to engage in diabetes awareness.

Why is this so important?

Because it was the vision of Ms. Edna Griggs and the Acres of Angels to organize and execute the Diabetes Walk. It was not “big pharma” or hosted by large, corporate entities. It was hosted by community members and local entrepreneurs who took time to share information regarding diabetes.

Events like this are necessary in our communities to empower us with the information to live healthier lives.

It takes family members sharing their medical history with those younger than them, so they can be prepared for possible diseases they may have in the future. It takes healthy lifestyles, not only when people are in their senior years, but also while people are young. It takes checking your blood pressure regularly, and taking your medicine on time. It takes eating less processed food and looking for other food options that are fresh and healthy. It takes regular doctor visits, adequate sleep, stress relief, and exercise. All these things can help reduce or eliminate your risk for certain diseases, including diabetes.

What is Felony Mental Health Court?

Felony Mental Health Court is a court created in Harris County, Texas in 2012 to help individuals that have been charged with a felony that also suffer from mental illness. Instead of facing the threat of incarceration, you are transferred into felony mental health court where you are placed in an intensive community supervision program that focuses on specialized treatment tailored to the defendant’s needs.

Criteria for Felony Mental Health Court: Diagnosed Mental Illness: In order to be considered for felony mental health court you must be diagnosed with a mental illness (Schizophrenia/ Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder).

Competency: In addition to being diagnosed with a mental illness, the defendant must still be considered legally competent by the court. They will have to undergo a competency evaluation for the court to make that determination.

Connection between Crime and Mental Illness: The crime the defendant is charged with must have some relation to the diagnosed mental illness.

More information about diabetes can be found on www.diabetes. org, including a free and confidential Diabetes Risk Test that can be taken online. March 28, 2017 was Diabetes Alert Day. Coordinated by the American Diabetes Association, this event brings specific awareness to the risk of diabetes.

Felony Charge: The defendant must be charged with a felony to be eligible to get into this program. Any offenses involving assault or possession of a firearm will be considered on a case by case basis.

Ineligibility for Mental Health Court: Under certain circumstances, some defendants are not eligible to be placed in Felony Mental Health Court even though they have been diagnosed with a mental illness. The defendant is not eligible for Felony Mental Health Court if: 1. The defendant has a past or current charge of a sex offense; or 2. If the defendant has been convicted of more than one DWI; or 3. If the defendant’s primary diagnosis is a substance abuse disorder; or 4. If the defendant is currently on parole.

If you have a loved one that is charged with a felony and they have a diagnosed mental illness or you suspect he/she suffers from mental illness, inform their attorney immediately so that the proper evaluations and testing can be performed.

Say HELL NO to the: “Proposed Community Land Trust”

T

here’s something wrong with our political process where all of our African-American politicians are controlled by two factions: The White Liberals and the so called Main Stream media.

The other day I heard someone ask, “How do you get to be a Director of a City Department with no experience?” The answer was simple, you have to be White and you have to have two or three sponsors willing to write “Big Checks”. Yes, I said it. City Hall is for Sale. This week I witnessed one of our City of Houston Directors say three incredible things to Black people at a Historically Black University: The White Inexperienced Director said: 1) He is working on creating a Community Land Trust –ie.

Taking land from traditional AfricanAmerican neighborhoods; 2) He is building a prototype housing - shipping containers for poor people (Yes you, Negro); and 3) He drives by the homeless under the freeways and the problem “is challenging” so he has not address this problem. (No quackquack kidding).

On Thursday, March 23, 2017, the City of Houston’s Community Development Director, Tom McCasland, spoke at the Barbara Jordon Mickey Leland School of Public Administration at Texas Southern University. Here’s a guy, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has a lot of questions swirling about him because of the unusual way he obtained his government positions.

You may want to know he ran unsuccessfully for an At-Large City Council Position and is now leading an effort to take land from seniors, the disabled, the poor and people of color in Acres Home, Sunnyside, Fifth-Ward and Third-Ward through the development of something called a Community Land Trust.

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing

the young educated fool dressed in a suit tell the Negros why all of his predecessors were wrong in building affordable housing and developing communities. He stated, he was a data driven bureaucrat in a good way, working to change the paradigm with the Ford Foundation, Rice and Harvard to develop “Complete Communities”.

He hit all the right buttons paying faux homage to professors, non-profits, politicians and community development corporations. He even offered an RFP of $3 Million Dollars for CDC’s and CHDO’s to apply within the next 3 months. I have seen this move before in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It was devastating in the 1970s and most of us remember the complete destruction of the Black middle class.

Let me get down to business and take on the first crazy idea presented at Texas Southern University last week, The Community Land Trust. I will address the other ones at a later date. If you hear on the street that we can develop more housing using a Community Land Trust, remember this: Yes it’s true. If, that is, you want a shadow government taking land from African Americans by White Boys connected to the Main Stream Media who give $500 to preachers to take all the land in the neighborhood and run a political style campaign to make Negros happy just to be in the room.

THESE ARE A FEW DISADVANTAGES OF A COMMUNITY LAND TRUST The Community Land Trust model has several disadvantages that are detailed below.

1.

Cultural Perception: It is not Texan, at all. In a property rights state and a City without zoning, having a regime take control of land is crazy and un-American.

DON’T SHAME

W

hen I was a boy growing up in Acres Home we were taught many things that have remained with me until this very day. One of the things that I will never forget hearing the old folks say is, “don’t shame the family!” I know that we are living in a new day; but I believe that if the values that were instilled in us when we were younger were at work today, there would not be nearly as many problems and issues as there are. There will always be something that we have to deal with. However people demonstrating the lack of values, morals, ethics and common decency, just appears to be the norm these days.

For over thirty years, I have been saying that we as members of the African-American community need to hold our leaders accountable.

Some of what we are experiencing with authoritative figures just doing what they want to stems from the idea, that their behavior is acceptable. When we sit idle, don’t vote and don’t voice our concerns with our leaders, it sends the impression that we approve of what they do.

I was reminded of these things in regards to our current president, Donald Trump. I have tried my best to remain hopeful with his administration, but I have just been having a hard time. First of all, a leader in any capacity is the chief representation for a group or body of members. Therefore, when placed at the forefront, it is expected that the leader will carry his or herself in such a way that it will not disgrace or shame the very ones that they are aiming to represent. So why then has there been so much of an issue in reference to President Trump visiting and networking with other foreign countries, as it has been the United States custom for hundreds of years?

is not some third-world country that doesn’t have a name or reputation to maintain. People from other countries spend their lifetime just trying to gain citizenship here. My purpose of stating that is to describe the level of accountability that the leader of a nation such America should subscribe to. Countries all around the world look up to America.

Therefore, we cannot afford to have a commander-in-chief that does not simply understand the concept of “shaming the family”.

Recently, Bill Neely of NBC News recently ran an article entitled, “Russia Compiles Psychological Dossier on Trump for Putin.” While I have chosen to title this editorial as “Don’t Shame the Family”, it appears that shame is already on the horizon for our current president.

Neely explains in his article that a psychological makeup is underway for in preparation of President Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump is being described as a “risk-taker, who can be naïve”. Due to Trump’s conversation and actions it has been concluded by the former Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrei Fedorov that he is, “not living in a box — he is living in a crowd.”

Fedorov says, that Trump should, “listen to the people around him especially in the areas where he is weak.”

It is customary for other countries to get a brief run-down of various leaders that they are scheduled to meet and network with. But, to prepare a complete psychological dossier on someone is similar to how our government does mass murderers and the likes. So for a leader to have to do this on another leader reminds me of what I was taught when I was younger, “Don’t shame the family!”

Then, if that’s not enough there has also been controversy in a completely different area of the

world, in regards to the presence of Donald Trump. In London, a petition has been started to cancel Donald Trump’s state visit with Queen Elizabeth II. The invitation was announce a few months back and not long afterwards, residents were compelled to dispute his visit to London.

Over a million signatures have been gathered at an attempt to persuade British Parliament not to entertain him. Some of the backlash comes from the executive order that Donald Trump signed banning people from Muslim countries entrance into the United States, as well as temporarily disabling the refugee program.

The petition was started by Graham Guest. He told Karla Adam of the Washington Post why he initiation the petition. He said he did not want Trump to embarrass Queen Elizabeth, II. If he chooses, Trump can go to Britain, but they are protesting his right to experience the complete state visit, with all of the bells and whistles that other diplomats normally receive. The petition states, “Donald Trump’s well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received

by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales.”

The fact that there is even this much debate over POTUS going to carry out a simple custom that has been a part of American tradition for ages is simply embarrassing. It was one thing if America had done something to these other nations. But the problem is merely the personality and behavior of the leader of these United States. All I can state is, “Don’t Shame the Family,” that is…. If it’s not too late!

HOUSTON - After 250 years of social segregation and discrimination, current health data confirms that African Americans are the least healthy ethnic group in the United States, according to a stunning report revealing the state of Black Health in 2017.

The stunning report, Improving the health of African Americans in the USA: an overdue opportunity for social justice, published October 3, 2016 in Public Health Reviews by BioMed Central, reveals an extensive report that has not been taken too seriously and has all but been ignored, buried, hidden and overlooked in the Black community.

Authors Allan S. Noonan, Hector Eduardo VelascoMondragon and Fernando A. Wagner points to several clear and definitive reasons African American suffer great disadvantages when it comes to health and healthy living in our communities and improving quality of life in the community..

In 2014, African Americans numbered approximately 42.3 million, accounting for 13 % of the US population.

About 55 % of them live in the Southern states.

It’s What We Believe & What We Don’t Shocking is the statistic in the report is that only 30-percent of African Americans believe that their health is dependent upon fate or destiny and only about 50 -percent feel that health is a high priority.

Lack of Real Black Representation and Voice According to the report, Blacks have not had a real serious voice at political, corporate and medical policy shaping tables.

“African Americans have not been in the fiscal nor political positions to assure the successful implementation of long-term efforts,” the report states. “The health of African Americans has not been a priority for decision makers.”

One of the main reasons for that is clear: “that the policies of health practice and health institutions that serve African Americans are most often determined by public and private sector leaders who have no health training.”

Lower Life Expectancy According to The Centers for Disease Control, Blacks had the highest age-adjusted death rate of any ethnic group in 2013 or (1083.3 per 100,000 standard population for black males compared to 876.8 100,000 for white males, the second highest).

In the USA, from 1980 to 2014, life expectancy at birth increased from 70.0 to 78.8; 76.4 years for males and 81.2 years for females.

Life expectancy at birth for blacks is 75.2 years; 72 years for males and 78.1 years for females.

African Americans and stand out as health problems: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and homicide.

Of those, heart disease is the leading cause of death for most Americans.

About 46 % of African Americans older than 19 years of age suffer from cardiovascular disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the leading risk factors for heart disease and stroke currently are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, current smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity.

Of those listed, African American women had the highest prevalence of obesity during this period, and African Americans have had the highest rates of diabetes since the data have been collected.

However, these causes of death may be the most visible health problems for African Americans, but they do not tell the whole story.

Mental illness also is the second largest cause of death in African Americans, and not far behind is violence in the form of homicide. It is the greatest cause of preventable death.

Also contributing to the poor state of African-American health are the high levels of poverty, the lack of education, and excess incarceration further compound the poor health of African Americans.

Some of the most prominent health issues among Black men and women include breast cancer among Black women and prostate cancer for African American males.

In 2011, African American women also reported higher rates of experiencing rape and physical violence and in 2013, higher rates of aggravated assault, child maltreatment, and fights were reported among high school students.

The study further reveals that much of our current 2017 health dilemma can be linked back to our poor health care past.

According to report research, the first African Americans were brought to the United States in chains as slaves and those transports from Africa to the New World remains one of the best examples of the ability of “one sector of humanity to destroy the health of another.”

Once enslaved, African Americans were forced to live in physical and social conditions in which their health had very little value and for more than 250 years, enslaved African Americans suffered physical, social, and mental brutalization.

The end of slavery did not mean that African Americans could suddenly lead healthful lives.

Since emancipation, Blacks have been subjected to a “systematic discrimination and oppression for the 150 years since slavery was abolished, and it continues nowadays.”

Healthwise, this history may be viewed as resulting in two outcomes.

“With so much suffering and early death, those who survived this subjection may be the strongest and most resilient members of this group.,” the study said.

“However, the history of slavery and the current racial discrimination this group continues to suffer clearly underlie the inexcusably poor health status of African Americans as a whole.”

In 1984, Margaret Heckler, then Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), dissatisfied with the way health disparities were being reported to Congress, provided the first comprehensive review of health disparities endured by black and minority groups, compared with whites; the report laid the foundations for action to eliminate these disparities through health education, promotion, and access to health care.

One of the most significant outcomes of the 1985 Report of the Secretary’s Task Force on Black and Minority Health, also known as the Heckler Report, was the creation of the Office of Minority Health in 1986, with the mission “to improve the health or racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that will eliminate health disparities.

Thirty years after the Heckler Report, African Americans still endure unacceptable health disparities and lack the power over policy and actions that could make the changes to eliminate such disparities.

“The fact that the African American population is the least healthy ethnic group in the USA is not due to chance.” Keppel, Garcia, Hallquist , Ryskulova, Agress.

Robert E Lee III – 1942-2017

Honoring A People’s Champion Who Put “Active” in Activism

He also was known to some as the "Mayor of Fifth Ward."

Robert E. Lee III was born on Dec. 16, 1942 to Robert and Selma Lee. His parents were unaware that the man they were about to raise would become a true people’s champ.

"He was an outstanding human being. He looked at people, at their strengths. He always tried to help," his brother, William Lee, said. "He believed in the community.

He believed in family."

Besides wearing his honorary title given to him by residents, he also was talented community organizer, writer, storyteller and folk artist.

Raised in the Fifth Ward, he was also raised in the community and company of other political and activist giants who came from Fifth Ward and attended Phillis Wheatley High School.

Black Lives Really Do Matter… and Its High Time Blacks Act Like It. When “Beefing” Goes Wrong Black People Die.

Too many times, people want to get even or settle the score.

Whether it is the streets of Chicago or the recent incident at Haverstock Hill Apartments, it points to the fact that the African-Americans who participate in Black-on-Black crime really don’t respect the history or the sacrifices of our ancestors and don’t understand the damage they inflict to their own race.

Black-On Black Crime In August 1979, Ebony magazine published a 162-page special issues dedicated entirely to the problem of “black-on-black crime.”

In a note to readers, the late John H. Johnson, the founder and publisher,

explained that rampant crime was making too many black communities “beleaguered and fearful places.” He also noted that blacks were much more likely than whites to be crime victims, and that most of the perpetrators of crime in black communities are black.

Fast forward to last week with the violent shooting happened Sunday night at the Haverstock Hills Apartments on Aldine Bender.

Investigators said an argument turned very violent when a man got out of the car, grabbed a gun from the trunk and fired into the group.

18 rounds from a semi-automatic weapon was fired, hitting six people.

Two of those victims died, while four others were rushed to the hospital.

Harvey Jones, is accused of allegedly pointing the gun at the victims.

Haverstock Hill is a symptom of a greater problem of the lack of pride in our beloved Black history and the struggle and points to the overall cruel mindset and disrespect some of us have for one another as Black people.

When is Enough...Enough?

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Homeland Security and Judiciary and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, issued the following statement condemning the senseless violence and mass shooting at the Haverstock Hill.

“The mass shooting at the Haverstock Hill Apartments on Sunday is a powerful and sober reminder of the epidemic of gun violence plaguing many of our communities. The easy availability of guns and the mass shootings they make possible too often result in horrific carnage that terrorizes citizens and devastates the families and loved ones of the victims. This must end. Enough is enough.”

Demetrius La Juan Syon, II 1990-2017

Demetruis LaJuan Syon, II, 26, was born on June 12, 1990 in Houston, Texas to Juanita Lewis Syon and the late Demetrius Syon.

Her was affectionately called LaJuan, Papoose, MeMeech and Little D, which he answered to all of them. He was baptized and a member of The Church Without Walls under the leadership of Pastor Ralph D. West, Sr. since the age of four.

LaJuan attended Southwest Prepatory School, Dominion Academy, Cypress Falls High School and Houston Community College.He enjoyed lifting wieghts, cooking, running and going to the movies with his mother. He also enjoyed making eating utensils of wood such as spoons, and bows and arrows.

LaJuan was an avid reader of history, nature and politics (C-Span), he was currently reading Oliver Stone’s book “The Untold History of the United States”.

LaJuan believed in a healthy eating lifestyle and preferred growing his own vegetables but he loved bacon and Shiner beer.

Demetrius LaJuan is survived by his mother Juanita, sisters Eveln Syon and Tonya Hawkins (Andre political leader, sports figure, medical professional or brilliant researcher or inventor.

Education Key in Turning Back Clock on Pandemic

“Every 23 seconds someone hears the three words that will change their life as they know it: "You have diabetes."

HOUSTON - For many, hearing that news leaves many speechless and wondering what to do next.

However, one of the best ways to battle the news is to fight back with guts, grit, education, activity and determination to win.

That is one of the main reasons for the annual Diabetes Walk in Lincoln Park in Acres Home.

The Step Out Walk directly supports research, education and advocacy for people living with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high, according to The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases .

The (NIDDK) is part of the National Institutes of Health and translates and disseminates research findings through its clearinghouses and education programs to increase knowledge and understanding about health and disease among patients, health professionals, and the public.

Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells.

Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems.

Compared to the general population, African Americans are disproportionately affected by diabetes: 13.2% of all African Americans aged 20 years or older have diagnosed diabetes.

African Americans are 1.7 times more likely to have diabetes as non Hispanic whites.

Diabetes is associated with an increased risk for a number of serious, sometimes life-threatening complications, and certain populations experience an even greater threat.

Good diabetes management can help reduce your risk; however, many people are not even aware that they have diabetes until they develop one of its complications.

African-Americans are also significantly more likely to suffer from blindness, kidney disease and amputations.

How common is diabetes?

As of 2014, 29.1 million people in the United States, or 9.3 percent of the population, had diabetes. Tragically, more than 1 in 4 of them didn’t know they had the disease.

Diabetes affects 1 in 4 people over the age of 65. About 95 percent of cases in adults are type 2 diabetes.1 The rates of diagnosed diabetes by race/ethnic background are: • 7.6% of non-Hispanic whites • 9.0% of Asian Americans • 12.8% of Hispanics • 13.2% of non-Hispanic blacks • 15.9% of American Indians/ Alaskan Natives In 2012, 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3% of the population, had diabetes.

Approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes Of the 29.1 million, 21.0 million were diagnosed, and 8.1 million were undiagnosed.

Also, the percentage of Americans age 65 and older remains high, at 25.9%, or 11.8 million seniors (diagnosed and undiagnosed), according to American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Deaths Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2010 based on the 69,071 death certificates in which diabetes was listed as the underlying cause of death.

Also, it was mentioned as a cause of death in a total of 234,051 certificates.

Diabetes may be under reported as a cause of death. Studies have found that only about 35% to 40% of people with diabetes who died had diabetes listed anywhere on the death certificate and about 10% to 15% had it listed as the underlying cause of death.

To help tackle this global public health crisis, the American Diabetes Association drives discovery in research to treat, manage and prevent all types of diabetes, as well as to search for cures; raises voice to the urgency of the diabetes epidemic; and provides support and advocacy for people living with diabetes.

What are the different types of diabetes?

The most common types of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. * Type 1 diabetes With type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. Your immune system attacks and destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin.

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, although it can appear at any age.

People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day to stay alive. * Type 2 diabetes With type 2 diabetes, your body does not make or use insulin well.

You can develop type 2 diabetes at any age, even during childhood.

However, this type of diabetes occurs most often in middle-aged and older people. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes. * Gestational diabetes Gestational diabetes develops in some women when they are pregnant.

Most of the time, this type of diabetes goes away after the baby is born.

However, if you’ve had gestational diabetes, you have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Sometimes diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy is actually type 2 diabetes.

*Other types of diabetes Less common types include monogenic diabetes, which is an inherited form of diabetes, and cystic fibrosisrelated diabetes.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Symptoms of diabetes include • increased thirst and urination • increased hunger • fatigue • blurred vision • numbness or tingling in the feet or hands • sores that do not heal • unexplained weight loss Symptoms of type 1 diabetes can start quickly, in a matter of weeks.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes often develop slowly—over the course of several years—and can be so mild that you might not even notice them. Many people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms. Some people do not find out they have the disease until they have diabetes-related health problems, such as blurred vision or heart trouble.

Who is more likely to develop type 2 diabetes?

A person is more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you are age 45 or older, have a family history of diabetes, or are overweight. Physical inactivity, race, and certain health problems such as high blood pressure also affect your chance of developing type 2 diabetes.

You are also more likely to develop

type 2 diabetes if you have prediabetes or had gestational diabetes when you were pregnant.

Genes and family history Having a family history of diabetes makes it more likely that a woman will develop gestational diabetes, which suggests that genes play a role. Genes may also explain why the disorder occurs more often in African Americans, American Indians, Asians, and Hispanics/Latinas.

Diabetes in Youth About 208,000 Americans under age 20 are estimated to have diagnosed diabetes, approximately 0.25% of that population, according to ADA figures.

In 2008—2009, the annual incidence of diagnosed diabetes in youth was estimated at 18,436 with type 1 diabetes, 5,089 with type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes in Men Historically, men have not been comfortable discussing issues about their health, particularly conditions like diabetes, depression or sexual dysfunction. This has resulted in shorter and less healthy lives for men in the United States compared to women.

Diabetes in Women Diabetes can be especially hard on women. The burden of diabetes on women is unique because the disease can affect both mothers and their unborn children.
