The morning after Barack Hussein Obama was elected to his initial term as President of the United States of America, I was invited to appear on a local television program to discuss the historic moment. Of all the things that I was asked by the white female news anchor, two still prominently standout in my mind; (a) how does it feel to live in a post-racial America? (b) Aren’t you proud of your people?

In regards to the initial question I responded that I would not know what it feels like to live in a post-racial America as this nation has not reached that point.

I went further and explained to her that by sheer virtue that she were white and I African-American and the first question out of her mouth was regarding race AT NIVERSITY OF OUSTON definitively proves that race is still a dividing factor in this democratic nation.

I must admit that the second question, ‘aren’t you proud of your people?’

Cornel West is not only a politically inclined philosopher, Upset me mightily. next great superstar. What’s even more mindboggling are the staggering odds these young men (and their parents) face in trying to pursue such lofty dreams. The pursuits are honorable, but very few succeed.

There’s no need for me to list the numbers that show the low percentages of black males who make the professional ranks in sports; nor is it feasible that I mention they stand a better chance of winning the Power Ball than playing in a Super Bowl. They already know this. Therefore, I think it’ll be best for me to explain what happens when these high hopes are dashed in false aspirations. Let me explain…

I’ve been coaching and teaching for a long time. What I’ve seen for nearly two decades is how young black males are groomed to be athletes from the time they are born. Cribs and carriages are stuffed with toy footballs and

basketball balls in hope of giving these youngsters futuristic glimpses of what they soon will become. As they enter into “toddlerdom”, falling down and tumbling across living room floors are greeted with “get ups” and “don’t cries” from creaky-kneed, stardom-driven dads bent on raising their boys the “right” way. What follows next over a period of years are the games that men play…

Around age twelve or so, junior high school beckons for these “can’t miss” athletes who have been viewed for the past four or five years at the peewee levels. Young men with extraordinary talent could have college scouts offering them full scholarships before they lay foot on a high school campus.

The possibilities are real. So is the abuse. Having a winning program at the high school ranks is paramount to having the same at the college level

minus the millions of dollars being involved. Many high school coaches, however, are so driven to win that they will do it all costs. The costs of the black male athlete, that is. In this day of “no pass, no play”, the “no pass” part can be severely manipulated if a “star” player is needed. Many teachers can attest to this. It happens all the time. It occurs in rural communities as well as urban districts. It is not limited to those locations, however. Winning at all costs is even more prevalent in the suburbs.

Black athletes live there, too, you know? These kids are being used and exploited. If they are not able to lead their teams to championships, they are being discarded until the next season begins. What follows are mediocre/failing grades, discipline problems, DAEP placements, and ultimately banishments from schools. It’s a damn shame and it’s time we took a serious look at how

our kids are treated.

Did you know that the best athletes are not playing in professional sports?

What if I told you that there was/is somebody greater than Michael Jordan, Willie Mays, Jim Brown, Usain Bolt, and other superstar athletes of our time?

Do you know where they are? You see them every day. They’re the guys who are walking the streets. Some are homeless and many are incarcerated.

All they were good for was running a football, dunking a basketball, swinging a bat, and running at record breaking speeds. Getting an education was secondary. “No pass, no play” is a “no care”. It’s not fair. Especially, to the African-American male. We gotta fix it.

The NFL Does not and Never has Given a Damn about Domestic Violence

This week, police documents that contained images and details from the May 2014 incident that left Nicole Holder severely battered and bruised at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Dallas Cowboys star defensive end Greg Hardy. Hardy was later arrested on charges of assault and communicating threats. In July of 2014, he was convicted by a Judge of the domestic violence charges. But his conviction was overturned on appeal, when Hardy appealed- requesting a jury trial- Holder could not be located, and all indications point towards their being a civil settlement.

The charges were subsequently dropped by the district attorney’s office. The documents, that were previously sealed, were made public merely 24 hours after his arrest stemming from an altercation with Holder. The previous arrest was expunged from Hardy’s criminal record. Since the release of the documents many have expressed sentiments of outrage towards Hardy’s behavior and called for the Dallas Cowboys to

terminate his contract and that he should never play another down in the NFL. The Cowboys took no such action, and Hardy was in the starting lineup Sunday night as the Cowboys took on the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys lackadaisical reaction is simply mirroring the NFL’s indifference for issues concerning domestic violence.

For many of individuals that are taken aback at the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL’s insensitivity towards domestic violence, I must ask you where have you been? It is time for many of you to face the facts: the National Football League simply does not give a damn, not about women or anyone in general. They don’t give a damn if Greg Hardy choked a woman half his size, if Johnathan Dwyer assaulted his wife in front of their infant child, or if Ben Roethlisberger sexually assaulted multiple women. Quite frankly, the league only cares if the stadiums are full, merchandise is selling and if league revenue is still in excess of 10 billion dollars. Anything other than that

is insignificant. Lyrics from rapper T.I. sums the NFL’s position concerning these issues perfectly “If it ain't about the money, don’t be blowin' me up, I ain't gettin' up”. The NFL could care less if a woman was beaten half to death, dragged across the floor by her hair, as long as the cash registers are ringing, all is well with the world.

Consider this, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell only formed a domestic violence policy in August of 2014 to appease women’s advocacy groups who threatened to boycott the NFL; which would have cost the league millions of dollars in revenue. This was in response to the 2 game ban levied against Ray Rice, after Rice was arrested for 3rd degree aggravated assault for punching his then-fiancé. Prior to Rice’s arrest, 40 players had been previously arrested on charges relating to domestic violence since Roger Goodell became NFL commissioner in 2007. And in many of those instances, the Goodell levied an inadequate suspension which was analogous to a slap on

the wrist and sent these players back on the playing field to make the league more money.

For those of us who avidly follow the NFL, the fact that Hardy is currently on an NFL roster despite his previous violent behavior is least surprising.

WAITING ON MY BARACK Manhood, Race & Culture

Each of us has a ‘pet peeve’ that is relatively inconsequential yet disturbs us at an unconscionable level. For example, I hate when people around me “pop” their bubble gum; my sister, an infamous gum popper, relates that the only reason it disturbs me is because I can neither “pop” gum nor make a bubble.

As a writer, I spend a significant portion of my time around books and ideas, so it is somewhat logical that many of my pet peeves surround the statements that others mindlessly make. When I sat down to sketch out this post, it did not take me long to pin-point my greatest ‘pet peeve’ statements that happen to be uttered

by African-American women, even a few in my circle of friends. Those statements are; “I am waiting for my Barack” and “Michelle MADE Barack”.

Now let me be forthcoming and state that this is not a covert attack upon President Obama, sisters please put away your weapons; one would have to be living under a rock to not recognize the unconditional love that African-American women possess for this brother. The target of this post is ALL of the wannabe Michelle Obama’s. Let me definitively state without any equivocation to those that fit this bill, YOU ARE NOT MICHELLE OBAMA!!!!!! There I said it and it needed to be said!!!!!!

This uncanny obsession provides an opportunity to examine an obvious tendency of many African-American women to take all of the credit for what their man has blossomed into or even accomplished in his educational and/or professional life. When success is bountiful and adulations are being handed out, Black women celebrate at a level that might as well include themselves wrapping themselves in a garment with an imprint that reads, “behind every good

man is a good woman”.

It is reasonable for AfricanAmerican women to believe that Michelle Obama is the “wind beneath” Barack’s wings. In their minds, Michelle Obama is that prototypical good woman standing behind her man; and I do not dispute that assertion. In the midst of the Right’s racially tinged and inspired attacks upon the POTUS, Michelle Obama has undoubtedly encouraged, prodded, challenged, and supported her husband and helped him soar to unprecedented heights; I am certain that the first couple would relate that their support of one another began well before Barack secured his first political office. A few of the more exuberant sister have even stated that Michelle “made” Barack. I smile at such an assertion because without fail those that I have heard articulating this belief are coupled with no-good men.

I always cringe at their statements because they have little understanding of what they are actually saying about themselves and their role in the sorry man that they have forged a relationship with.

One thing is certain, the aforementioned sisters see no contradiction behind the statement of Michelle “made” Barack and the pitiful “gentleman” that they are currently ensnared with. Their logic is convoluted as it ascribes Barack Obama’s current status to his wife, yet refuse to take credit for the sorry state of their man. They illogically posit that if they could find a Barack Obama, then all of their relationship issues would dissipate.

Most African-American women I have discussed this issue with refute my assertion that if it is true that “behind every good man there is a good woman”; well, then the opposite, meaning, “behind every no good man is a no good woman,” must be just as valid. And considering the current state of Black men, there must be legions of ‘no good women’ in our midst. WHERE ARE THE PEOPLES’ SERVANTS?

Even a cursory glance of African-American history reveals that Black leaders were forced to be first and foremost servants to the people. Leaders such as Absalom Jones, Frederick Douglass, Anna Julia Cooper, Booker Taliaferro Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin, and Malcolm X displayed an unprecedented ability to not only be self-sacrificing, but also to remain steadfast in their commitment to keep those that relied upon them at the forefront of their mind. I wonder what leaders such as Baker, King, Malcolm, Medgar Evers, and Washington would think of today’s crop of African-American leaders?

There was a time, a long, long, long time ago, like in the 19th Century, when it made sense for Negro preachers to serve as racial leaders. The primary reason that this made sense was because that the absence of an adequate educational system left the vast majority of our people suffering from political, economic, and historical illiteracies. Far too often, the preacher was the most educated person in the town and served by default as the spokesman during any racial incident. Although the conditions that forced preachers into this role have long ago receded from the national landscape, there still appears to be a tendency among our people to rely upon Black preachers to speak for the race on all matters from police brutality to civil rights issues.

One of the principal problems with this leadership model is that far too often, issues are not being solved, yet these men of God are being rewarded handsomely for their service. It is safe to say that they would be highly critical of what many consider the gold-standard of contemporary Black leadership, individuals such as Jesse Jackson, T.D. Jakes, Creflo Dollar, Jamal Harrison Bryant, Al Sharpton, and Umar Johnson, who is as close to a

preacher as one can find today, come to mind.

Although many may resist this fact, however, it is obvious to anyone who cares to unemotionally view African-American leaders’, it is that they are rewarded handsomely for their services. The alluded to pay and accolades are delivered to them via tithes, offerings, speaking and appearance fees, regardless of success or failure.

There is little debate that the true measure of leadership is found in a leaders ability to not only inspire his followers, but also to serve as their humble servant. Unfortunately, there appears to be a lack of humility and service to the people by those currently occupying national leadership positions. In fact, they are exalted by followers and in many ways untouchable to ‘the common people’ who hang on their every utterance.

African-Americans are particularly vulnerable to those who package and sell liberation from their pulpits for a few simple reasons: the church has always been the most important institution in the vast majority of their lives, the Pastor is far too often implicitly trusted as he fashions himself as a man of God, and the vast majority of us believe that it is only faith and prayer that has encouraged God to make a way out of no way on a frequent basis.

Unfortunately, Black leaders, particularly those standing in this nation’s pulpits, have failed to save their loyal followers from what one could term continual political powerlessness and economic depravity. There is little doubt that the current political disorganization and economic inefficiency that we witness within African-American neighborhoods is due to their lack of leadership.

The population that I am alluding to was termed the ‘talented-tenth’

al men. The problem of education, then, among Negroes must first of all deal with the Talented Tenth; it is the problem of developing the Best of this race that they may guide the Mass away from the contamination and death of the Worst.”

The ‘talented-tenth’ were charged with handling the difficult, yet extremely rewarding, task of setting a standard of excellence within the community and serving as courageous representatives that defended the poor during the frequent attacks that emanated from hostile whites.

Members of the ‘talented-tenth’ were revered within the community; particularly among aspiring Black youth who desired to join that class when they reached adulthood.

Unfortunately for the Black community, the ‘talented-tenth’ has largely abandoned those who so desperately need their mentoring, teaching, and advisement. Until this matter is reversed, it appears that African-Americans will remain stuck in their current position.

Hence, it is imperative for the Black intellectual and professional classes to return to the Black community, a request that does not necessarily cause them to return to Black neighborhoods, and mentor African-American males and females toward a glorious future.

I would hope that you agree that African-American young people have so much more to give; unfortunately, their contributions are too frequently de-railed by poor choices and decision-making habits. It is time that Black leaders definitively prove that they are capable of being servants of the people; if they decide to not serve their flock of followers, there is no hope for liberation.

A messenger of indisputable intellect and truth, his appearance in Houston was most certainly a welcomed one.

When Delilah Garvin (Educator, Houston TX) was asked what it meant to her to have the opportunity to hear Dr. West speak live, she had this to say: “I saw Mister West speaking at a forum back in the early 90’s when I was in college, and I’ve followed his career ever since then. I admire him because he speaks with so much power and conviction.

In my opinion, he has the same type of spirit and influence that Malcolm X had.” Delilah’s husband, Mr. Teddy Garvin (Educator, Houston TX) echoed his wife’s sentiments by adding “Yeah, I remember when me and my wife were both in college together and it meant a lot to each of us to eventually become an influential part of society, so back then, we used to associate ourselves with intelligent people, whether we were hanging out with them or simply listening to them speak. Having graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in three year and obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy at Princeton, the provocative democratic intellectual is now a Professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice at Union Theological Seminary and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University.

Impressively, Dr. West has also taught at Yale, Harvard, and the University of Paris. In line with these accomplishments, Dr. West has written over 20 critically acclaimed books including his classics – Race Matters and Democracy Matters, his memoir – Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud, and his most recent releases – Black Prophetic Fire and Radical King.

As it relates to “main stream media”, Dr. West is well-known force and is a frequent guest on CNN, the Bill Maher Show, C-Span, Democracy Now, and the Colbert Report. In fact, he has also made a film debut in the Matrix and was the commentator (with Ken Wilbur) on the official trilogy released in 2004.

Aside from having appeared in over 25 documentaries and films, he is a favorite among the more “conscious and culturally-aware” musicians as well. Some of which, he has made collaborative efforts with, including Jill Scott, Talib Kweli, and Andre 3000 (to name a few). Better mentioned,

his spoken word interludes which were featured on Terence Blanchard’s “Choices” won the Grand Prix in France for the best Jazz Album of the year of 2009.

In more recent times, Dr. Cornell West made his scheduled appearance at the University of Houston lecture event and did not disappoint. In his typical fashion, he engaged his listeners with truths about our society and about the overall state of our nation. He touched on the disturbing racial climate as wells as his take on the immense social injustices that plague the American culture as a whole.

Another one of Dr. West’s Houstonian supporters had this to say “If we do not stand up for something, we will likely fall for almost anything, and that’s

a shame because that means we will pretty much just lay down and continue to let the ill-willed people in high places just do whatever they want to do to us.

That’s why it’s important to stay informed and proactive and this is what people like Dr. West encourage us to do. Honestly, without this type of leadership in place, we would be in much deeper trouble than we are already in, because the way things are happening these days, we’re already in enough trouble.”

PRISONERS = “CASH COWS”

Many different advocates of human and social rights have been very vocal in their condemnation of the newest and most popular form of inhumane exploitation in the United States.

With a prison population reaching nearly 2 million in numbers – mostly Black and Hispanic – are providing free work in various industries (cafeteria workers, agricultural workers, general laborers, etc.). In fact, for the “big-wigs” who have a vested interest in the prison industry, it has been like striking gold. Fortunately for them, they never have to worry about paying comparable wages, employes unions, departmental strikes, or paying for unemployment insurance, annual vacations, or any other type of costly additives that help to make a company or employer an appealing one.

The fact is: They have an entire staff of workers who are full-time, and are never tardy or absent because of doctor's notices or family emergencies. Beyond this, if they refuse to work they suffer hostile consequences.

Statistics show that the United States has incarcerated more people than any other country in the world. In fact, in the State of Texas, it's been said that Houston's “Harris County” alone, locks up more people than any third world country. As for our nation as a whole, U.S. Statistics unveils the fact that the United States accounts for just over 25% of the world’s prison population, but for only 5% of the world’s people. When one mother of two Harris County inmates was asked what she thought about these facts, she replied “That's just sad”. “That's really really wrong.” she said in anguish.

And so - What's really going on?! What's the real reason why there are so many prisoners?

The ugly truth is that, since they're entire income and lively-hood is contingent upon “numbers”, private prisons actually foster incentives, namely financial kickbacks, for judges to lock people up. And, this inspires other incentives. By now, everyone knows that police officers are given financial bonuses as an incentive to make more arrests. During a recent interview, one HPD officer had this to say: “I know of a lot of my fellow officers who rack up people just so that they can get a bigger paycheck, but I don't do that.” “I'm really out hear to serve and protect people and that's why I patrol the neighborhood where I was raised.” he said.

And so, if the prison owners, along with their business affiliates and other vested supporters are giving judges the same type of cash incentives, how can certain “targeted prospective criminals” stand a chance? In the same way, even the retail and corporate entities who “make money off the prisoners' work and/or their consumerism” spend their time lobbying for longer sentences, in order to expand their own businesses. Just think of who

the vendors are: plumbing supply companies, food supply companies, armed security, suppliers of greeting cards and general gift shop items, providers of padded cells, and so on. With a hefty network like this one, there is no wonder why there is a calculated plan that begins with the legal system preying on and capturing “a certain type of people” in the streets... later, throwing them into the back seats of police cars (because the cop is getting paid attractively for it)... then,shuffling them through the courts (because the judges are getting paid attractively for it)...

And eventually landing them in a prison cell (because the prison owners and all of their closest affiliates are getting paid attractively for it).

Why then, is this viewed any differently from when European people voyaged to Africa and solicited the help of others to capture those people in the homeland... later, throwing them into the bottom of slave ships (because the slave capturers were getting paid attractively for it)... then, shuffling them through auction blocks (because the auctioneers were getting paid attractively for it)... And eventually landing them on a slaveowners plantation (because the slaveowners and all of their closest affiliates were getting paid attractively for it).

Altogether, slavery, by definition means – systematic forced labor.

And still today, a large group of Americans (primarily African-Americans and Hispanics) are a forced hand in picking crops, managing soup kitchens, bussing tables, cleaning laundry, maintaining livestock, and all types of other labor. And as a consequence, the convicts remain in bondage as they slave to the beat of heartless system called modern-day slavery.

And the beat goes on, with the prison industry complex as one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States.

In fact, according to reports by a number of human rights organizations, there are the factors in place that help to keep certain types of people from accidentally being caught in the unforgiving net of prison captivity.

For example, there are longer sentences for those who have less - Federal law stipulates 5 years imprisonment and no possibility of parole for possession of 5 grams of crack or 3.5 ounces of heroin, and 10 years for possession of less than 2 ounces of rock-cocaine or crack.

Whereas, a sentence of 5 years imprisonment for cocaine powder requires possession of 500 grams – 100 times more than the quantity of rock cocaine for the same sentence. Reason being, the assumption was that most of those who use cocaine powder are white, middle-class or rich people, while mostly Blacks and Latinos use rock cocaine.

African-Americans are instructed from birth regarding how to sidestep hostile situations with avowed racists that are seemingly the embodiment of unregenerate evil, while whites are simply allowed to live with little concern or consideration for evil.

One of the groups that African-Americans are instructed to avoid ‘by any means necessary’ is the Aryan Brotherhood. The group has its genesis in American penal institutions during the 1980s for the same reason that other prison gangs are formed; there is strength in numbers.

Consequently, racial/ethnic groups often joined together as a means of protecting themselves; officials currently state that the gang has as many members as the better known Crips and Bloods.

In due time, the Aryan Brotherhood followed the lead of other prison gangs such as the Black Guerilla Family and found itself steeply involved in crime. Similar to other gangs, those who join learn that there is no exit process other than the death that is doled out as punishment for those who betray the gang via unsanctioned activities or serving as informants for law enforcement authorities.

Motivated by a highly racist ideology that often leads to members donning swastikas; the Aryan Brotherhood is the average Black

citizen’s worst nightmare. Unbeknownst to white Americans who maintain that this nation has entered a post-racial period, members of the Aryan Brotherhood live in their midst. Steve “Stainless” Cooke, a General in the Aryan Brotherhood, once resided in Tomball, Texas.

Unfortunately, for Cooke, he, along with 72 other members/associates of the Texas based Aryan Brotherhood, was indicted on a range of federal indictments. U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch assisted in the prosecution that resulted in six members receiving life sentences and nearly 50 others receiving federal prison sentences in excess of ten years.

Although I believe there is little chance of convincing whites’ that their contention that a post-racial America is currently in existence, obviously their view is tainted by a life that allows them to avoid much of the prejudice, discrimination, and racism that shadows so many AfricanAmericans on a daily basis. If only they could walk in our shoes for a single-day, their steadfast belief in a post-racial America would be challenged in an unprecedented manner, particularly if they had the misfortune of conflicting with one of the many members of the Aryan Brotherhood living in their midst.

For instance, there was once a prisoner who, for stealing a car and two bicycles, received three 25-year sentences. But perhaps one of the most troubling cases resulting from this measure was that of a man who was sentenced to a life sentence for stealing a candy bar.

In certain penitentiaries, inmates are “fortunate” enough to receive the minimum wage for their work, but not in all states of course.

And at some privately-run prisons offer their prisoners as little as 17 cents per hour for a maximum of six hours a day; the equivalent of $20 per month.

Thanks to prison labor, the United States is once

again an attractive location for investment in work that was designed for Third World labor markets. In Texas, a factory fired its 150 workers and contracted the services of prisoner-workers from the private Lockhart Texas prison, where circuit boards are assembled for companies like IBM and Compaq. Also regarding Texas, a federal judge ruled that overcrowding in Texas prisons was cruel and unusual punishment, resulting in some “corporate big dogs” stepping up to sign contracts with sheriffs in poor counties to build and run new jails and share the profits.

The prison industry: It's big business indeed. It's a new form of slavery for sure.

BISHOP JAMES W. E. DIXON II: A REMARKABLE “KINGDOM BUILDER”

Bishop James Dixon II: He’s the leader of a place where the ultimate mission is to build a “model community of faith”; extending God’s kingdom; Biblically, evangelistically, educationally, economically, socially, and globally.

Wow! That sounds like a very powerful and impactive plan, doesn’t it?! Well, indeed it is a lofty plan . Except, many times, even the best intentions are never brought to fruition, and eventually such grand intentions often become no more than dreams unrealized. Yet, this is most certainly not the case where it’s concerning Bishop James Dixon II and his church, The Community Of Faith. As a matter of fact, this influential visionary, Pastor Dixon has taken the Houston Metropolitan area by storm with his ability to “follow through” on his plans. Homes for the homeless, schools that are

accessible to underprivileged youth, discounted childcare for struggling and underpaid parents, and so on.

The previously mentioned list sound like the perfect wish-list for nearly any philanthropist who has a worldchanging attitude. But for Dixon this is more of a check-list. And admirably, all of those goals have remarkably been checked off of his list and marked as “already done”.

Having begun his position in ministry at a very early age, James Wallace Edwin Dixon II is a veteran of sorts as it relates to ministry. In early 1981, after Pastor Clovis Johnson, who served the church for nearly three years, had elected to resign, this action forced the congregation to go before the Lord in intense and focused prayer for their next leader.

In July of that same year, after Pastor Johnson’s resignation, the

Lord revealed the church’s next Pastor: A newly ordained 18 yearold, who was also a recent high school graduate and the grandson of the late Pastor C. D. Dixon.

Against all odds, the congregation began to grow rapidly with this young visionary at the forefront.

Accordingly, this young fiery Pastor’s passion for evangelism and outreach was manifested in the new ministries implemented under his leadership and also in the innovative programs that were launched soon thereafter. Years later, in October of 1986, God inspired the 23 year old pastor to lead the church in a new direction by relocating to 1023 Pinemont; a truly ambitious undertaking which actually occurred on November 19, 1986. This bold move marked the beginning of a series of fresh changes and massive accomplishments. In 1987, birth was given to “The Community Of Faith” concept, which continues to result in kingdom development and expansion. Later, as a new era emerged, the vision was broadened to include shrewd but faith-based economic and real estate ventures. In line with this, a major acquisition of 22.6 acres of land transpired in November of 1990 with a price tag that was just shy of $1 million dollars. Perhaps then, it was not yet known that it would not only become the sight for The Community Of Faith’s new sanctuary (The Kingdom Dome), but it would also be the birthing place for many other magnificent endeavors.

Consequently, due to the church’s constant growth and its reach beyond their immediate region (Northwest Houston), the church is more than appropriately called “The Community Of Faith.”

Furthermore, through its everexpanding vision, other affiliated entities have blossomed within the Northwest area of Houston and beyond. TEXAS • NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 6, 2015 for grades sixth through eighth), Dominion Community Development Corporation(created in 1993 to promote, foster, and initiate “truly” affordable housing, economic development, education, and human and social service projects that would have a positive sustaining impact on targeted low to moderate income communities), Dominion Park (affordable, but upscale apartments), Dominion Estates (an 85 unit residential subdivision), and Dominion Square Apartments (a 136 unit apartment complex).

All of these projects are now huge success stories that can be told by a spirited pioneer (James Dixon II) and by his congregation as well.

His congregation, by the way, has grown to more than 4,000 members, with an annual budget of more than $2 million dollars.

One particular member of the congregation, Crystal Jackson (Dixon’s Executive Administrative Assistant) spoke recently about the things she’s learned under Dixon’s leadership. She said, “Over the past 15 years working and serving our Visionary Bishop James W.E. Dixon, II there are so many principles I have personally learned and applied to my life.The strongest lesson learned is how to apply the principle of faith. I have learned from Bishop Dixon’s biblical teachings on faith and seeing him walk in faith, to never look at anything through the natural eye but through the supernatural. Applying that principle and watching things come into flourish is just awesome and amazing!”

As for the name “Dominion”, this was derived from the scriptural reference found in Genesis 1:28, where God said that we are to subdue the earth and have dominion over it. In their own words, The Community Of Faith is “transforming lives into reality through community development and people empowerment.” Moreover, their aim is to build a “model community”, complete with every major component required for wholesome habitation, economic empowerment, and family development; and their aim has been a triumphantly perfect one.

Ultimately, over the past 20 years, The Community Of Faith has been guided by a vision that consists primarily of “building disciples to make a difference” and essentially, they’ve been guided by this and many other God-given visions belonging to a fearless and innovative kingdom builder; Bishop James W. TSU COLLEGE OF PHARMACY HEALTH SCIENCES OPEN FIRST PHASE OF HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER

TEXAS SOUTHERN - Recently, TSU’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (COPHS) revealed its new Interdisciplinary Health Professions Practice and Simulation Complex in the former Nabrit Science Center. The ribbon cutting ceremony and Open House will be held as a part of TSU’s Homecoming 2015.

The first phase of a six year strategic plan to develop a Health Science Center, the Health Professions Practice and Simulation Complex promises to be a new learning environment that transitions and expands learning from

the traditional classroom to practice labs. The Complex’s practice labs and classrooms are equipped with cuttingedge audio-visual equipment to facilitate instruction and current healthcare automation and informatics utilized in the most progressive institutions.

The new practice labs are designed to teach health professions students in an environment that simulates actual healthcare settings with the goal of developing “practice-ready” health professions graduates.

“The US healthcare industry is very dynamic and currently requires

The HustonTillotson University Board of Trustees announced Pierce Burnette as the institution’s sixth President and Chief Executive Officer, effective July 1, 2015. Pierce Burnette becomes the first female president of the merged Huston-Tillotson University and only the second female president in the institutions’ 140-year history. Pierce Burnette, a United States Air Force retired Lieutenant Colonel military spouse, shared the airplane hyperbole with the crowd gathered in KingSeabrook Chapel as a way to express that Huston-Tillotson University is about to “take off.”

This is a noble cause,” Pierce Burnette said.

Referencing Huston-Tillotson University as the “intellectual heartbeat of East Austin,” Pierce Burnette shared the vision of the institution with goals to ensure financial stability, grow the traditional enrollment, raise funds, as well as build friendships.

“We are not a charitable institution; we are a wise investment,” said Pierce

simulated hospital and clinic environment to evaluate the ability of health professions students to work collaboratively to care for patients as taught in the practice labs and classrooms. This simulation center is very innovative as it goes beyond simulated hospital and clinic rooms that are traditionally offered by health profession academic institutions to also include all of the major operational units (e.g. nursing unit, pharmacy, respiratory therapy department, clinical lab, medical records department, etc.) that are typically found in healthcare institutions to sup-

port the care provided in the hospital and clinic patient room. The simulation center will include affiliations with area medical and nursing schools in addition to the six health disciplines offered by the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Pierce Burnette had an extensive career at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, from 1999 - 2012 that scaled to Vice

President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer, providing financial, analytical, physical plant, auxiliary services, capital construction, and human resources leadership to achieve mission-based goals. In addition, at Central State University Pierce Burnette served as Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer.

Her educational accomplishments include earning a Master of Science Degree in Administration with honors from Georgia College in Milledgeville in 1983 after completing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Ohio State University in Columbus in 1980. In 2003, Pierce Burnette was accepted and completed the Harvard Graduate School’s Education Management

In recent days, the Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development held its Monthly Networking Luncheon for the month of November. At the top of the gathering, Mr. Michael McCullough and the Carver Jazz Band ushered in a relaxed ambiance as Chairman Roy Douglas Malonson welcomed all attendees and began the event with an interactive conversation about the recent elections and also about the expectations of constituents moving forward.

Several political nominees were in attendance including Amanda Edwards (City Council nominee), Kevinn Robinson (Justice of the Peace

nominee), and Eric William Carter (Justice of the Peace nominee). Also in attendance were representatives of Houston Community College, making mention of their new and highly anticipated Acres Homes Academic Building. As a part of the Groundbreaker HCC Bond Program, the new 25,120 square feet campus will be constructed on approximately 11.3 acres and will include health education programs, a combination of classrooms, academic/computer labs, administration and support spaces, a student lounge, and a multi-media space.

Once HCC gave their overview of the soon-to-

come campus, Chairman Roy Douglas Malonson called out into the audience to Mister Randy Bates in order to remind the people in the room that due to close association with the neighborhood leaders and advocates, Lone Star College has spearheaded and maintained a very similar campus in close proximity to where HCC's Acres Homes Academic Building will be located.

Meanwhile, attendees sat and enjoyed this and other useful information along with their savory meals which were provided by Tippy's Soulfood (located at 7117 N Shepherd Dr , Houston TX 77091). Shortly thereafter, Mr. Terry Williams Jr. gave a very heartwarming introduction of his father , the luncheon's speaker of the day, Mr. Terry Williams Sr.. In what could have easily been perceived as the highlight of the luncheon, the young entrepreneur, Mr. Terry Williams Jr. gave the listening audience an admirable account of how his father is a man who is unafraid of barriers and locked doors. The beaming son called his father a “heck of a business man” and a “pretty good philanthropist”.

He then referred to his father as a man of many 'firsts'. Mr. Terry Williams Jr. went on to explain that his father was the first “best student athlete of the year” at Hoffman Middle School (Aldine ISD) where the plaque still remains on display.

also the first “African-American student body president” as well as becoming the first “AfricanAmerican Mr. Eisenhower” at Eisenhower Sr. High School (Aldine ISD) in 1980. Many other “firsts” were mentioned in his introduction, but the moment that stole the hearts of the people in the room was undoubtedly when, apart from all of the public accolades, Mr. Terry Williams Jr. sentimentally introduced his father as his own first hero, his first best friend, and his first mentor.

Following such a gentle yet impactive introduction, the proud father and speaker of the day, Mr. Terry Williams Sr. took his place on the given platform and wowed the attendees with an energetic presentation of his personal formula of success. He didn't dwell on the magnitude of his positions as the first ever African-American Vice President of HEB or his stance as the first African -American to be named President/Chairman of the Board for Sam Houston State University.

Instead, he focused more-so on his healthy aggression and his fail-proof method in the quest for success. He announced that the one thing he wanted to add to his 38 year career in the areas of 501.C3
