Recently, in observance of “Citizenship Month” and as a part of its ongoing commitment to community engagement and social justice, University of Houston Downtown welcomed one of the foremost human rights activists of our era, Dr. West to lecture on America, race, and our nation’s “Black lives matter” movement. This lecture took place at Robertson Stadium and was supported by the Center for Critical Race Studies, the Cultural Enrichment Center, the Departments of Arts and Humanities, English, and Social Sciences. A household name to many civil rights enthusiasts, Dr.

The morning after Barack Hussein Obama was elected to his initial term as President of the United States of America, I was invited to appear on a local television program to discuss the historic moment. Of all the things that I was asked by the white female news anchor, two still prominently standout in my mind; (a) how does it feel to live in a post-racial America? (b) Aren’t you proud of your people? In regards to the initial question I responded that I would not know what it feels like to live in a post-racial America as this nation has not reached that point. I went further and explained to her that by sheer virtue that she were white and I African-American and the first question out of her mouth was regarding race AT NIVERSITY OF OUSTON definitively proves that race is still a dividing factor in this democratic nation. I must admit that the second question, ‘aren’t you proud of your people?’ Cornel West is not only a politically inclined philosopher, Upset me mightily.
