HOUSTON - “One issue is economic development. You don’t really hear many discussions regarding how elected officials’ should empower existing communities through new initiatives aimed at revitalization. How do you go about what is best termed, responsibly revitalizing; meaning introducing initiatives that allow for existing residents to access newly introduced resources aimed at improving areas instead of being quite simply run out of neighborhoods that they have lived in across several generations? Two, infrastructure needs.

Although it is very difficult to accept, many of the amenities in our urban communities, such as parks, are absolutely inaccessible due to the absence of a baseline infrastructure.

It bothers me that animals and livestock appear to get more respect and attention than our beautiful older population in this country.

If you are fortunate to live long enough, you may experience a decline in mobility or health that can strip away our independence and diminish the quality of our lives.

History Meals on Wheels has been guided by a single goal since the first known U.S. delivery by a small group of Philadelphia citizens in 1954 – to support our senior neighbors to extend their independence and health as they age. What started as a compassionate idea has grown into one of the largest and most effective social movements in America, currently helping nearly 2.4 million seniors annually in virtually every community in the country.

Great advances in medicine have extended our average life expectancy to a record high of 78.7 years.

Living longer means more years spent in the struggles that accompany old age. Add to that the increase in geographic mobility of our families and the result is millions of seniors left behind, hungry and alone.

That is why cutting any funding of Meals on Wheels is totally unacceptable.

Rep. Keith Ellison, D- Minn., tweeted that Trump had called for the “elimination” of Meals on Wheels, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus quickly dubbed it the “Starvation Budget.”

Trump’s promises to aid lowincome city residents are as hollow as his promises to aid rural America.

He is launching a war on the elderly and people in poverty.

Native American elders pass down their knowledge.

There are over 500 Native American nations, and each has its own traditions and attitudes toward aging and elderly care. But in many tribal communities, elders are respected for their wisdom and life experiences. Within Native American families, it’s common for the elders to be expected to pass down their learnings to younger members of the family, according to the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

“Crossing the Burning Sands at Your Own Risk”… (Part 1) Before I Lay it Down...

f you’ve never been on a college campus or known someone who has, the likelihood of you knowing what fraternities and sororities are do not sit at the top of your lists of important “things” to do.

Mentioning the names of the Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLO): Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Iota Phi Theta would be the same to the average reader as mentioning those famous Enlightenment Thinkers: Maximilen Robespierre, Rene Descartes, Voltaire, and Rousseau.

If you’ve never researched who they were/are, they would be of absolutely no use to you unless you’re a history nerd.

With the Netflix release of “Burning Sands” and the annual discussion of pledging and hazing on college campuses, we’ll omit talking about 18th century philosophers and go straight to talking about beating the hell out of college students and watching them die.

Remember how “A Different World” and “School Daze” had major impacts on the enrollment in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) back in the late 1980s and 1990s? Do you recall how African-American students flocked to our schools after witnessing “Dwayne Wayne”, “Whitley Gilbert”, “Ron Johnson”, and “Sinbad” show us how good life could be on a black college campus? Can you remember hurrying to the movie theatres to

watch Spike Lee introduce us to the “wannabes” and the “Jigaboos” detailing how shallow-minded college kids could be in the same setting? More importantly, do you remember how both productions highlighted fraternity and sorority life?

To many African-American families across America, television/ cinema would be their first introductions to pledging and its familiar cousin, hazing; something that has been around for a long time.

I have done a lot of research on the topic of pledging and hazing; I consider myself both a primary and secondary source. In many of my interviews down through the years, I have spoken with men AND women who have shared their own horror stories of “legal” and “illegal” hazing activity throughout the “Divine 9”, the name given to members of the National PanHellenic Council comprised of all nine members of the Black Greek Letter Organizations across the United States and abroad. Some of their experiences I dare not repeat because of the criminal nature(s) of said offenses, but many of those who made it across the “burning sands” wear their “torment” as badges of honor and brands of brotherhood/sisterhood. Many pledges did not make it... Make it across the “sands” towards membership, that is.

If you’ve watched the movie (Burning Sands), you can form your own opinions as to why they did not.

Students have died being pledged and/or hazed on the West Coast in the Pacific Ocean. A young man died after being hazed on a high school track in Texas.

KEEP IT CLASSY The Overflow

here are many young women who our young girls look up to such as Beyonce, Amber Rose, Nicki Minaj, and Kim Kardashian, just to name a few.

These are all beautiful and hardworking women, but the question is, what is the message that our young girls are receiving from these high power entertainers? Even though they are beautiful and successful women, are they truly teaching our young girls how to be respectable women? I admire these entertainers for their accomplishments, but our young girls need more role models to teach them how a young lady should act in our everyday society.

Not all of our young girls will be able to make it in the entertainment industry, or to become famous.

So are we preparing the younger generation to be successful in the business world, or teaching them how to become engineers, doctors, scientists, or lawyers? More so, are we preparing them to be future wives and one day, mothers?

On January 20th, 2009, the world received First Lady Michelle Obama, who was and still is the epitome of class. She is a welleducated Harvard Law School graduate, who always dresses appropriately. Even when she shows skin, her wardrobe is still appropriate.

She walks with confidence, and she speaks with power. She stands up for what she believes in, and she never compromises her morals and values for anyone or for anything. In spite of her beautiful image, and reputation, Michelle Obama has been criticized since the first day former President Obama took office. When our newly elected President’s wife, First Lady Melania Trump took

office, I remember being upset by a comment that someone tweeted. It said, “Now we finally have a classy first lady.” I look up to Michelle Obama, and admire everything that she was trying to do, and everything that she represented. My hope is that our young girls were able to look up to her as well, and learn something that they can carry with them throughout their life’s journey.

I have a question for our older ladies. What have you done to help our young women? So many people are quick to judge them, but have you reached out to help educate them, and to show them what it is means to be a respectable woman?

There are a few things that we must teach our young women.

You can be sexy and beautiful with clothes on- it is okay to show some skin, but showing too much causes people to lose respect for you, and this is not how you want to carry yourself. Your image goes a long way, especially when you start applying for jobs and etc. Let your dress be a reflection of who you are.

Don’t let a man treat you anything less than a queen- a man should open the door for you, he should never call you out of your name, or put his hands on you.

Don’t settle for anything just so you can have a “man”.

Love yourself and respect yourself- in order for someone else to respect you, you have to know how to love and respect yourself first.

Be independent- learn how to depend on and take care of yourself. It’s okay to let a man do great things for you, but don’t put yourself in a situation to where you are depending on someone else for everything.

GETTING OUR ACT TOGETHER OUR MONEY & OUR VOTE!

S

ome people may think that I am repetitive in a sense because I stress emphasis on certain issues, but there is a reason for that. For the last few years, I have been dealing with things that, We MUST Understand in my personal column. It was my sincere hope that the issues I covered would empower members from our community to become proactive and understand the various ills that have plagued us for decades. Whether or not my words have fallen on death ears or not, I’m not sure. But, one thing I am definitely sure about is that, WE GOT TO GET OUR ACT TOGETHER! As such, I will be changing my column soon to reflect that exact idea.

Because African-American News&Issues is a Black publication that strives to address and highlight current and historical realities affecting our communities; I hold myself to a charge to write it and tell it just how I see and feel it. Without fear or favor, I don’t mind speaking against and writing about the things that have been and remain impartial and unfavorable to African-Americans; since the inception of this nation.

Therefore, it is imperative that WE Understand that we possess two of the most powerful tools that any culture or race can. Our “money” and our “vote” are those two most precious commodities and we should be careful who we give them to.

Even to those who feel they have no voice or feel that they will never be heard, as long as you have money you have a voice. As long as you have the right to vote and EXERCISE it you have a voice.

Having a voice does not only reflect a person using his or her mouth to speak. We MUST Understand as a race of people WE can speak more solidified and in unison by making a point with our money and

vote. Hence, these tools will speak volumes without us ever having to open our mouths!

To that regard, recently I came across a depiction that detailed and described the exact power that I am referencing here. In a study entitled, The Black Buying Power of Black America, which was conducted by Target Market News. It was found that, “Black people spend: $3.3 billion per year on tobacco, $3 billion per year on whiskey, wine and beer, $2.8 billion per year on non-alcoholic beverages, $3.1 billion per year on leisure time, $3.5 billion per year on toys, games and pets, $19 billion per year on telephone services, $10 billion per year on buying gifts for one another, $13 billion per year on gambling, $29.3 billion per year on clothing, $65.2 billion per year on food, $17 billion per year in charitable contributions and $321 million per year on books.” Majority of the items listed here that have been found that African-Americans spend money on can be best spent in more productive and supportive ways in helping to support and empower one another. However, we have a bad habit of supporting the idea and agenda of those who do not look like us and who are definitely not friendly to us.

We give away our money to help those who hurt us and it only cripples our own advancement. This is why I make it a point to always refer back to the physical days of our ancestors’ slavery and oppression as well as integration. For, there was a time in these United States that we had no choice or option other than to patronage and support each other.

Because we damn sure couldn’t buy from those who didn’t look like us. It wasn’t that nothing was wrong with our “money”. Oh no, that wasn’t the case, it was merely just something

wrong with the color of our skin that made our money undesirable; unless we came through a back door or some other inhumane entry!

I often write and talk about us holding those accountable, whom we have elected to represent us within the government. To me, it does not matter whether a candidate or politician is Republican or Democratic. All that matters to me is that whoever we vote to represent us, have the best interest in mind when it comes to making decisions that we have to pay for and live by.

Not too long ago, I wrote an editorial informing that while many AfricanAmericans are Democrats today; the truth is that African-Americans used to belong to the “Party of Lincoln”, which is the Republican side.

Be that as it may, I just believe that if we Africans in America subscribe to being Independents and not siding with the Democrats or Republicans, our “vote” would not be taken for granted the way that it has been. Furthermore, it will give us the right to vet each side and determine the best choice for those who will represent us. We should send a message that our “vote” is not one to automatically be given to a Democrat or Republic, unless they show that they will work for and with us. Thus, I will conclude with a thought once conveyed by the first POTUS, George Washington.

He said, “A free people ought not only be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.”

HOUSTON - As the Donald Trump White House feasts on the best in catered meals and dinner dates costing thousands of taxpayer dollars from Washington, DC. to Mira Lago, Florida, America’s elderly suffer and struggle to survive from one day to the next trying to make good choices about what to eat for meals, how much to pay for medications while enduring a humble mildmannered lifestyle.

Adding insult to daily injury is the cold slap in the face of your grandma, your granddad, your mom and dad and other elderly retired now living off fixed incomes are facing a new threat – The fear of further pain and isolation surrounding President Donald J. Trump’s administration attempt to eliminate funding support for anti-poverty programs, including Meals on Wheels.

The Fight is Real Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is fighting to save crucial social service programs that are at risk of being slashed or gutted as part of the draconian cuts laid out in the Trump Budget.

“The Trump budget will cause Meals on Wheels programs to shut down across America and undermine other vital social service programs,” District 19 Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said sounding a loud strong wake up call for Americans to act.

“These cuts are immoral and would devastate the most members of our community who have already suffered enough. We must stand together to fight for American values and say “no” to the Trump budget.”

Houston’s Meals on Wheels program could see a major scale back in operations causing many seniors and other vulnerable members of the community to go without food.

Cover Story Houston Mayor Mayor Sylvester Turner issued the following statement regarding proposed federal budget cuts that would seriously reduce funding for the Meals on Wheels program in Houston.

“As Honorary Chair of the Advisory Board of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, the largest Meals on Wheels provider in the Greater Houston area, I know firsthand the importance of this program,” he said. “For many of these residents, the driver delivering this meal is often the only regular visitor they receive. Without this vital program, thousands of our most vulnerable citizens will be left alone and hungry. I am calling on our Congression-al delegation to not let this happen.”

According to Turner, Interfaith Ministries serves Approximately 4,000 homebound seniors and disabled adults receive Meals on Wheels from Interfaith Ministries each day.

Even more Houston residents are served by other agencies such as the YWCA and the Eve-lyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center.

“More than 90 percent of these clients have annual incomes that place them below the fed-eral poverty level,” he said.

“They depend on the hot meal provided by Meals on Wheels for sustenance.”

Also, in Austin, another organization announced that the delivery of meals to thousands of elderly residents said that those citizens will no longer be able to be provided those meals. Other programs across the state are reporting that cuts mean longer waiting lists for help or elimination of services altogether.

Meals on Wheels is the stop gap that brings a daily relief and allows many poor, fixed income elderly to briefly exhale from drowning in a sea of hunger, poverty, isolation, frustration and depression.

Meals on Wheels America, an organization that represents 5,000 home-meal delivery organizations around the country, is about the experience the pain from budget cuts by a President who ran his campaign stating, “America and Americans First” and “no more forgotten men and women”.

After the budget release, Meals on Wheels America President Ellie Hollander said last week. “So, while we don’t know the exact impact yet, cuts of any kind to these highly successful and leveraged programs would be a devastating blow to our ability to provide much-needed care for millions of vulnerable seniors in America, which in turn saves billions of dollars in reduced healthcare expenses.”

According to the Office of Management and Budget, these groups get about 35 percent of their funding from the federal government and are allocated by the Older Americans Act and distributed by the Administration on Aging within the Department of Health and Human Services.

It Ain’t About People No Mo’ – It’s About The Money At a Washington White House press conference on March 16th, Budget Director Mick Mulvaney made it clear when commenting about Meals on Wheels when he considered the program as an example of a questionable service funded by the Community Development Block Grant, a $3 billion flexible funding stream provided to states by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“We can’t spend money on programs just because they sound good. And Meals on Wheels sounds great - again, that’s a state decision to fund that particular portion too,” Mulvaney said. “But to take the federal money and give it to the states and say, look,

Another quote speaks volumes about the lack of care and compassion for the elderly. “ We can’t spend money on programs just because they sound good. And Meals on Wheels sounds great – We’re going to spend money, we’re going to spend a lot of money, but we’re not going to spend it on programs that cannot show that they actually deliver the promises that we’ve made to people.”

Mulvaney makes it crystal clear inferring that your poor, humble father, mother, grandmother and grandfather who worked hard all their natural lives to help Build America, now are off the Trump radar and are the new “forgotten men and women.”

Missed Are The Powerful Benefits of Meals on Wheels Nearly 11 million senior citizens received services funded by the Older Americans Act, including 138 million home-delivered meals., according to a report from the Congressional Research Service.

Research has suggests that home-delivered meals help senior citizens live independently in their homes, since the food provides some daily nutrition goals and the social contact with the volunteers who deliver the meals. It also is a safety stop gap if those served suffer a medical emergency.

The program serves 4000 clients daily in Houston. Of those, 1,991 of those elderly residents are AfricanAmerican and live in places like Acres Homes, Fifth Ward, Third Ward, Kashmere, Studewood, Sunnyside, Alief and areas of East Houston and Greenspoint.

Some of the African-Americans being served in those areas include: 260 from Acres Home; 904 clients in Fifth Ward; 363 in East HoustonGreenspoint; 178 in Studewood; 125 in Third Ward; 116 in Sunnyside; 120 in Alief and 121 in Spring Branch to name a few.

Meals on Wheels for Greater Houston also is able to serve seniors with the help of partners like the Harris County Area Agency on Aging and Harris County Community Services Department, and IM reach out to the other remote areas of Harris County serving seniors.

History In 1955, the Houston Council of Churches launched IM's predecessor organization, the Church Welfare Bureau, to organize the Protestant community to minister to those in need.

In 1964, the Bureau was reorganized as Protestant Charities of Houston, a group that was joined and strengthened by the Jewish community.

Officially chartered as Houston Metropolitan Ministries in 1969, IM has been a leading force in bringing together people of all faiths to serve people in need in the greater Houston

area.

It was renamed Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston in 1992 to reflect support from increasingly diverse faith traditions.

Food Fears/Insecurity Food fears and insecurity among is one of the highest in the country, and the cuts could have drastic and possibly deadly consequences.

However federal budget cuts threaten to curtail services to the elderly and disabled – a great concern for Mildred and others who depend on Meals on Wheels daily.

President Trump's budget calls for the elimination of one program that some of the nation's 5,000 Meals on Wheels groups rely on: Community development block grants, a $3 billion program that started in the Ford administration to give states and cities more flexibility in how they combat poverty.

Across the country, the group provided approximately 219 million meals to 2.4 million seniors in 2016.

The program also feed 500,000 veterans every year.

Trump's slimmed down budget still needs to be finalized and then pass through the rigors of Congress before becoming law.

The budget intend to strip down community-development and anti-poverty programs to make way for higher defense and antiimmigration cutting $3 billion from the Community Development Block Grant program, which supports a variety of feeding programs, including Meals on Wheels, in many states across the country.

Harris County Elderly

Trapped in The Middle What that means in Harris County is the possibility of a cutback in services and increased waiting lists for the food.

acial attitudes that supported segregation of African Americans probably arrived in Texas during the 1820s in company with the institution of slavery.

An elaborate system of legal codes kept black Texans apart from the mainstream of Texas life.

Segregation of African-American railroad passengers was a long-standing tradition in the South, despite Emancipation and passage of constitutional amendments related to civil and political rights.

In 1871, the wife of Senator Walter M. Burton was thrown off a moving train when she refused to leave the whites-only coach.

Situations like this inspired African-American legislators to join Representative Mayes in attempting to enact laws supporting equal accommodation on trains for African Americans The railroad segregation issue was one of the primary concerns of African-American legislators throughout the 1880s.

In 1881, Representative R. J. Moore attached a relevant amendment to one bill after another African-American woman was thrown from a train after standing up for her right to sit where she wanted. Governor John Ireland pleaded with the Colored Men's Convention of 1883 not to press the railroad issue, but they did. They lost the fight and Railroad-Car Segregation began in 1891.

In 1896, railroad accommodations were the case in point when the U.S. Supreme Court legalized separate-but-equal facilities for whites and African Americans.

By 1910 and 1911, the legislature passed laws dictating that railroad companies provide separate waiting rooms in railroad stations.

By 1930, black citizens could not attend sports or cultural events, eat at the better restaurants, or get lodging at the finer hotels unless these facilities provided separate accommodations.

THE MEANING OF MARRIAGE AMONG BLACK MEN

In order to participate in the study, couples had to meet the following criteria: • Be at least 21 years of age • Be willing to participate with their mate • Be legally married and living together or have definite plans to marry within 12 months • Agree to attend an educational program session that meets on three Saturday mornings • Be willing to pray and have others pray for them as a couple

Statistics has shown that marriage among Black men have declined over the years. There are many factors that contribute to this, however there was one study that was conducted to better understand the meaning of marriage among Black men. This study focused on interview data from 52 participants who were participants of the Pathways to Marriage Project. These participants were recruited from the Program for Strong African American Marriages (ProSAAM) as quoted “The purpose of this investigation was to uncover the underlying processes that support marriage formation and maintenance among Black men.”

The research was conducted by Tera Jordan, an assistant professor of human development and family studies at Iowa State University, in collaboration with Jeffrey Shears, director of the Joint Masters of Social Work Program at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University, Maggie O’Connor, a graduate research assistant at Iowa State University, and Sharon Brooks Hodge, executive director of Black Family Preservation Group, Inc. According to Sharon, she stated, “This new research is important because we are not aware of any other studies that have analyzed Black men’s memories regarding their fathers’ lessons about being a husband. Black men are significantly TX-8

understudied in academic literature on marriage and marriage relationships.” In addition, Jeffrey stated, “Black males don’t necessarily view marriage as a healthy option. We don’t talk about the benefits of marriage to males…how we learn and how we process and even our value system is certainly influenced by our parents, our families of origin and our communities.”

So how are Black men viewed in our society today? “There are some strengths…but they are really struggling with a lot of stereotypes… there’s an uphill battle…that look at Black men as being less than before they open their mouths and before they walk through the door,” stated Tera Jordan.

Four themes were found in the meaning of marriage that included; secure emotional support, lifelong commitment, enhanced life success, and secure attachment. In addition, there were two themes that were in a result to important influences that contributed to the meaning relative to marriage, which included faith, and the dynamics of give and take.

“Responses among the men concerning the change in marriage over time related to transitions in American marriages and a deepened respect for marriage.”

The couples that participated in the study resided from northeastern Georgia and metropolitan Atlanta.

In the study, “Census estimates, only 32% of Black adults were married in 2009 as compared with 51% of adults from all races (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). Although some Blacks have retreated from marriage, scholars note that the desire to marry and the high regard for marriage have not waned over time in the general population (Edin & Reed, 2005; Marks et al., 2008).” Even though marriage has declined among Black Men, in regards to all races in the general population, people are still getting married.

In the two hours each man was interviewed, they were asked “about the meaning of marriage, marital socialization, their motivations for marrying and staying married, factors that help encourage and sustain marriage, barriers to or challenges in staying married, commitment attitudes, and their participation in ProSAAM.” The following below are only some things that were found in the study: The Meaning of Marriage According to the study, in regards to the meaning of marriage, “54% of the sample described it as a lifelong partnership.” Several themes were derived from marriage being viewed as a lifelong partnership such as, secure emotional support, lifelong commitment, enhanced life success,

UNDERSTANDING THE LAW: GRANDPARENT CUSTODY

GRANDPARENT’S RIGHTS IN TEXAS In order to institute a case for grandparent access the grandparent must first have standing to sue, meaning they must meet certain criteria to be able to bring the matter before court. In order to have standing to sue as a grandparent for custody, the grandparent must either prove:

lived with you for at least six months on a continual basis, then you may qualify to file for custody of your grandchildren and gain all the legal rights and benefits to care for them properly.

• Child’s Safety and Well-Being Grandparents are allowed to file a custody suit under Texas Family Code §102.004 if they can prove to the court that “the child’s present circumstances would significantly impair the child’s physical health or emotional development.” Under this provision of the Texas Family Code, a grandparent must show that the child’s parents are unfit and that the child’s physical health and safety are at risk in order to gain custody of the grandchildren.

Once a grandparent has established standing to sue for custody, they must also show that allowing the grandparent to have custody of the child is in the child’s best interest.

If you are a grandparent seeking custody of your grandchildren, meet with an attorney before making a decision in order to have a clear understanding of your rights and to insure that your rights and your grandchildren’s rights are being protected.

Postmaster Chenise LeDoux

HOUSTON - Chenise LeDoux continues to be in good company both now and historically- having been postmaster in Lake Charles, LA; Katy, TX; and most recently Tampa, FL. Many prominent figures in American history have been postmasters such as Abraham Lincoln, Harry S. Truman, and Benjamin Franklin. Now and traditionally, a postmaster is largely considered to have great character, display integrity- and be good company.

Mrs. LeDoux becoming postmaster is no small feature, as Houston is one of the largest cities in the United States. Until March 17, 2017, there has only been 36 postmasters in Houston since 1837.

As the Houston Postmaster, Mrs. LeDoux is responsible for mail service at 66 stations, which are staffed by 3,773 employees. These stations cover 1,855 city routes, 151 rural routes, delivers approximately 1.2 billion pieces of mail and generates more than $535 million in annual revenue. The installation ceremony/ celebration was definitely warranted for such a lofty position.

These words were rendered by Councilwoman Amanda K. Edwards, during a past interview with African-American News&Issues. It was just a little over a year ago, when Councilwoman Edwards took office at the City of Houston. She won the runoff election on December 12, 2015, for the Houston City Council, At-Large Position 4. It was the vacant seat of, former Councilman C.O. “Brad” Bradford.

I chose to begin with an excerpt from a past article on Councilwoman Edwards for one reason. In times past, we have been engulfed with scores of political and authoritative personalities that have solicited support from our communities, at an attempt to become an elected official. However, we have seen all too well promises gone unfulfilled, our neighborhoods in a state of disarray and our families left to fend for themselves, alone. Therefore, I was elated to be in interview with the intelligent, humble, determined and invaluable Councilwoman. For after reading this piece in its entirety; it may clearly be concluded that

Friend and special guest speaker, Julia Boykin-Wilbert, claimed “the induction was perfect timing because Chenise should be celebrated during Women’s History Month for her accomplishments.” There could not have been a more warmly cultivated room for an installation ceremony set by all the sentiments of the speakers. Chenise appeared joyful and thankful throughout the ceremony and shared many fine words herself. “I am honored and humbled to become Postmaster of Houston, TX,” said LeDoux. “I’ve worked in the Houston area before and am happy to be back among so

Who is Amanda K. Edwards?

Amanda K. Edwards is a native Houstonian. She was reared near the Acres Homes community. From as early as she can remember, she was always passionate about caring for and helping others. Although her father passed when she was a teenager, she was blessed to have a strong and supportive mother to help nurture and guide her along the way. She was raised a devout Catholic at St. Monica Catholic Church in Acres Homes.

She graduated from Eisenhower High School. Afterwards, she went on to attend Emory University in Atlanta, GA. It appears that leadership was in her DNA, as demonstrated by her role as the “Student Body President” both at Eisenhower and Emory.

During her tenure at Emory, she earned the: Emory Academic Excellence Award, Emory Overall Excellence Award and was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame. She earned a degree in Political Science from Emory University. It was in Atlanta, that she gained valuable community building and public policy experience working in community development corporations as a Community Building and Social Change Fellow and in the Georgia State Legislature. From these experiences it

many friends and colleagues. The employees in Houston are among the best in the country and we value our customers and appreciate the opportunity to serve them.”

History: Despite the hardships, many African Americans sought work in Post Offices.

The 19th century was a time of enormous change in the postal workforce – from 1802, when Congress banned African Americans from carrying U.S. Mail, to the late 1860s, when newlyenfranchised African Americans began receiving appointments as postmasters, clerks, and city letter carriers. As the 20th century neared, the political pendulum began to swing backwards, and many gains of the immediate post-Civil War

assisted with broadening her perspective about how to effect change through urban policy and collaboration.

Afterwards, she worked for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee in Washington D.C. before earning a degree from Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, she served as a Criminal Justice Institute student attorney, chaired the Harvard Black Law Students Association Spring Conference and was awarded the Elaine Osborne Jacobson Award, for her commitment to serving underserved populations in the healthcare law industry.

Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, she made a decision to relocate to New Orleans. While there, she served as a judicial law clerk for Federal District Court Judge Ivan L. R. Lemelle and established Project NOW: The New Orleans Writing Project, which inspired New Orleans youth to empower themselves and their community through the power of writing.

After making a difference and leaving a positive impact on residents there, she returned home with a strong desire to do the same here.

Prior to being elected to City Council; she practiced law as a municipal finance lawyer, where she “solved complex issues relating to tax-exempt bond financings, public-private partnerships, community development projects,

In the early 20th century many African Americans found steady, valuable jobs in urban Post Offices, but little room for advancement.

Despite discriminatory employment practices, the Post Office Department was a rare avenue of opportunity for African Americans – postal jobs were coveted positions that helped lead to the emergence of a black middle class.

A new era of opportunity for African-American workers began in the 1940s, when U.S. Presidents – spurred on both by civil rights organizations and war-time necessity – began using their powers of office to encourage equal opportunity in the workplace.

Thelma Scott is the Founder & CEO for Barbara Jordan Endeavors Corporation (BJEC).

The organization was founded December of 2000, In her research she discovered students with disabilities throughout school districts in Houston and the surrounding Gulf Coast area. Since then Mrs. Scott has dedicated her time and passion as an advocate and mentor to reduce the dropout and suicide rate for students with disabilities. Her desire is to help them to not be in denial, discover and refine their own personal disabilities (unique abilities).

Mrs. Scott’s first appointment as an advocate for people with disabilities was in 2004 by the Honorable Mayor Lee P. Brown.. She was a member of the Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities in 2004 and she was reappointed in 2006

by Honorable Mayor Bill White,, where she was the voice to create the first Mayor’s Youth Advocate Award which is awarded to a Youth with a Disability each year by the City of Houston. Mrs. Scott currently serves on The Governor’s RCT Advisory Council in Austin. She was the first African American woman with a disability to be appointed in 2008 by the Governor’s Office Rehabilitation Council for The State of Texas (RCT) that is established by the federal law to provide community input to vocational rehabilitation agencies in Texas. During Mrs. Scott’s tenure as a RCT Council Member for the State of Texas, she serves on various committees including the Planning and Review Committee, and the Advocacy and Education Committee.. She also serves on the Black Heritage Society Board, Spring ISD Business and Community Advisory Committee, Spring Education Foundation Board, The Texas Rehabilitation Association Advocate Advisory Committee and travels to Washington DC to advocate for bills that affect people with disabilities. Other notable service includes the Mayor’s Office K-12 Advisory Committee & Marketing Advisory Committee.

The last 19 years Mrs. Scott served on the Houston North West Chamber of Commerce Education Committee and now she serves on the Gulf Coast Diversity Council Education Advisory Committee.

In May 2012, Mrs. Scott and the Barbara Jordan Endeavors Corporation were nominated for Washington DC White House Champion of Change STEM Award for People with Disabilities Winning Futures Across America!

The year 2012 was an amazing year for Mrs. Scott and BJE. The Honorable Mayor Annise D. Parker presented Mrs. Scott with the Mayor’s Community Disability Advocate of the Year Awards 2012. In May 2012, Mrs. Scott was honored by Houston ISD for the HISD VIP Volunteer Award of the Year.

Stakeholders spotlighted Mrs. Scott and the Barbara Jordan Endeavor Corporation for Black History month keeping Barbara Jordan’s Legacy alive in February 2012. The State Texas Council Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) highlighted the Barbara Jordan Endeavors Program in their 2012 State Plan Newsletter, as well..

Barbara Jordan Endeavors Corporation was awarded the Community Outreach Partnership Award in 2013 by Houston HISD. Each Year the district recognizes an educational partnership involving a nonprofit or for-profit TX - 10

organization that has had a positive impact on student achievement. On August 1, 2012, the Barbara Jordan Endeavors Corporation was awarded a Development Outreach Grant by TCDD to present nine workshops for students with unique abilities and their parents throughout Houston and its surrounding areas.
