YOUR ONE VOTE DOES MATTER

As an avid sports fan, I can attest to the fact that the game is often won or lost in the final moments. The 2015 Houston Mayoral race is analogous to a sporting event with two halves. When one considers the crowded field of contenders who declared themselves eligible for the Mayor’s office, • Chris Bell (D) • Ben Hall (D) • Adrian Garcia (D) • Sylvester Turner (D) • Marty McVey (D) • Andrew Wood (D) • Stephen Costello (R) • Bill King (R) it is truly a feat for Sylvester Turner and Bill King to have made it to a run-off election. These two candidates --- Sylvester Turner (D) and Bill King (R) --- are now poised for a “run-off election since neither of them secured a majority of the vote. There is no better analogy for this present political moment than to consider it halftime of this political contest. It is a particularly tenuous moment for Houstonians supporting Sylvester Turner, the candidate with 31% of the vote, the largest percentage of any candidate, because victory is seemingly within their grasp.

THE NEW CHIEF IN TOWN

Dr. Cynthia Wilson, the former superintendent of Orangeburg, South Carolina’s Consolidated School District #5, is now the Dallas Independent School District’s new Chief of Staff. Her new position was effective, October 1. Prior to being Superintendent in Orangeburg, Dr. Wilson was Houston Independent School District’s North Region Superintendent where she led 64 elementary, middle and high schools that included the HISD schools in Acres Home. She resigned from her position in Orangeburg in order to take a job in her home state of Texas. Dr. Wilson spent 22 years working in the Houston Independent School District as a kindergarten teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, District Superintendent and finally as the North Region Superintendent. In Houston, she was “highly regarded for her support of a diverse and multilingual student enrollment, earning high marks through that district’s performance pay system,” states the DISD news release. Specifically, while in Houston, 80% of her region of schools received Recognized or Exemplary ratings from the TEA; including 9 secondary schools. Under her leadership, the drop-out rate was decreased to meet or exceed state and federal standards; graduation rates significantly increased in each regional high school; regional schools met the highest academic achievement with a student population that was 88% low income, 70% Hispanic, 32% bilingual and LEP, and 29% African American; and implemented the One Million Dollar Scholarship initiative for every high school in the region while raising in excess of $10 Million in grants for the region in 5 years from entities including Chevron/ Texaco, The Houston Rockets, the Hogg Foundation and Kroger.
