Many Americans, including myself, sat transfixed on Friday watching the bond hearing of Dylann Roof, the accused shooter of last week’s massacre at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. As family members of the victims stood up and said they forgave Roof, who appeared via video-conference from jail, they emphasized that hate would not win. The immediate reaction from the public to this act of mercy has been one of universal acclaim for the strength that these family members displayed. But while many have stated that they did the right thing and averted potential divisiveness, some are saying that they are tired of us having to forgive and take the higher moral position when such evil occurs.

In a world full of horses, cows, and sheep, we definitely don’t need men smelling like skunks. Here are some sure signs that yo hygiene ain’t where it’s supposed to be: 1. Look in the mirror. Hold yo head back. If you notice that you have mo hair in yo nose than you do under yo arms, you’s a nasty bastard. Cut that ISH outcho yo damn nose. How can you breathe with that forest all up in yo nostrils? If you notice that yo nose hair is starting to connect with yo mustache, you need to run to drug stoe like yo ass was on fire and buy some of those little nose scissors. Do it as soon as you can before you get embarrassed by some women. They do not like nose hair.

2. Let’s go back to yo under arms.

Fellers, please don’t buy deodorant that leaves yo under arms looking like yeast infections. Don’t do that.

Some of y’all have the nerves to wear “wife-beaters and tank tops”. That’s not cute. Putcho yo damns arms down! Nobody wants to see that ISH. Get some “roll on”. Let it dry. If you sweat a lot, keep some deodorant in yo pockets. Don’t go around funky.

3. Let’s talk about funky breath.

Open up the palm of yo hand. Blow yo breath into it. If yo hand starts burning or you start wobbling like someone just knocked the hell outta you, yo mouf is infected with something vile. Take yo ass to the dentist!

If you can’t afford it or you don’t have any insurance, we understand that.

But, if yo toothbrush still looks brand new after six months, you ain’t doing something right. Brush yo damn teef!

Getchu some dental wax or sewing

thread and floss yo gums. Not every man has perfect teeth, but you should at least try to take care of the five you have.

4. Wash yo ass! Take a bath/ shower everyday! There is simply no excuse not to find some water somewhere and scrub yo behind. Teach yo young boys the importance of bathing.

Don’t let them run, jump, play, and sweat all day and then allow them to go to bed without washing they little balls. Little boys turn into grown men and teaching them proper hygiene while they’re young will save them a lifetime of embarrassment.

5. Trim/clip yo finger and toenails.

Go getcho ass a pedicure. Pay them ladies “fie dollah” and let them scrub/ scrape/burn all of that crap from the bottom of yo damn feet. Nobody’s toenails should be sharp enough to open up a can or corn or green beans.

straight today: forgiveness and a high moral tone does not avert the need of a movement; rather, it raises it to the level where it ought to be.

The movement against racism, and the movement against easy access to guns must be fought by those that take a high moral ground and therefore a high moral tone.

A movement should never be based on being threatening physically, or violently. The strength and courage that these brave family members showed at that bond hearing and every other day since this horrific tragedy should not be used to somehow dismiss their determination and will to seek justice and fight on behalf of their loved ones and for the betterment of society. It takes more power to be forgiving in the face of direct wickedness and evil than it does to easily react and match who could be more destructive.

As I visited Charleston last week

and assisted members of National Action Network’s Charleston chapter who have worked with the now late Rev. (and Senator) Clementa Pinckney and others killed, I sensed not only a high moral tone but a determination among both Blacks and Whites to bring down the confederate flag and continue to fight for stronger gun control measures and increased attention to mental health issues.

No one is more vested in seeking justice than the courageous family members of those nine innocent victims who were slaughtered in a place that was their sanctuary.

Anyone who thinks that forgiving Dylann Roof is an act of weakness has no clue what forgiveness is all about, nor what kind of inner strength it takes to do such a thing.

In 1989, a 16-year-old teenager named Yusuf Hawkins was shot dead in the neighborhood of Bensonhurst,

Brooklyn after being surrounded by a mob of bat-wielding White youth.

That ethnically White community in Bensonhurst protected the killers and hid information. We began marches to protest the killing and to put pressure on the neighborhood to give information (which they ultimately did that led to convictions and long sentences).

On the 23rd week of protest in 1991, a young White male stuck his arm out and stabbed a knife right into my chest. As I lay in the hospital not knowing how serious my wound was, I remembered my growth as a student of Dr. King, mentored by those that were senior staff members of his, and I knew that this would be a defining moment in my own self-image, not withstanding what the public image of me was, should or could be. And I decided to forgive my assailant.

He was given five to 15 years, and did nine. I visited him in jail -- and that was no easy task. The hardest thing I’ve done in my life is walk into jail and look into the eyes of the man who not only wanted to kill me, but actually tried to do so. He told me he could not understand how I could visit him and forgive him; I said I did it for myself. If I wanted to be the man, that advocate, that leader that I aspired to be, I couldn’t take hatred or revenge with me on my journey.

The South Carolina Psychopath: Conservative or Liberal

Let’s not let the screamers and media mis-define who is what.

Example: “radical Islamist” is an oxymoron. Radicals are far left wing—they want to “progress,” by changing everything, just because it’s there. Islamists are the ultimate arch-conservatives—they want to go back to the 12th century. (Media folks majored in journalism, not government.)

We’re also being misled about the South Carolina psychopath. First media reports: he’s a conservative because he’s a racist who attacked black people in a black church.

T’ain’t so. Surprise: he’s a lib, he just doesn’t know it. Conservatives are constantly called NAZI’s for promoting traditional values, like strong families and marriage, opposing homosexual marriage, opposing abortion, opposing the removal of prayer from school and governmental activities, and opposing gun control.

The South Carolina psychopath was a Hitler lover who adopted Hitler’s goals.

Hitler was many things. Hitler: 1. Was a racist; 2. Blamed other ethnic groups for his problems; 3. Viciously attacked, and often killed, anyone who disagreed with him or was not deemed desirable; 4. Attacked churches, synagogues, priests, and rabbis; 5. Separated churches from the state; 6. Was pro-abortion and for theextermination of “subhuman” groups of people; 7. Seized all guns, making Germany a gun free zone (except for NAZIs, the Gestapo, and the SS); 8. Founded the National Socialist (NAZI) Party. Socialists are liberals.

Like Hitler, the South Carolina

shooter: 1. Was a racist; 2. Blamed other ethnic groups for his problems; 3. Viciously attacked those who disagreed with him; 4. Wanted to exterminate groups of people who were “problems” or of lesser value; 5. Attacked his “enemies” in a church—a gun free zone; 6. Worshipped Hitler and was a NAZI—a National Socialist.

None of these traits is a conservative trait. Ask yourself, 1. Which group blames other racial and religious groups for their problems? (See Rev. Wright, Sharpton, Jessie Jackson and David Duke for assaults on Jews.) Who does this: liberals or conservatives?

2. Which group viciously attacks those who disagree with them and shouts down all opposition with name calling (hater, racist, deny-er, NAZI, etc.)? Condoleeza Rice had to withdraw from giving a commencement address. Ann Coulter was attacked while speaking to a college group.

Who was responsible—liberals or conservatives? When has a liberal been treated this way?

3. Which group attacks and defames religious beliefs? Which group attacks Bible believers as homophobes because the Bible finds homosexual actions to be sinful—liberals or conservatives?

4. Which group establishes gun free zones where only evil doers have guns?

5. Which group works to separate churches from school and public life?

Don’t let others define you. Do you: 1. Attend church regularly?

2. Support that church (and other charities)?

3. Oppose abortion and homosexual marriage?

4. Own a firearm, or don’t mind honest neighbors who do?

5. Believe that employers should hire the best applicants whom they can afford?

Dissension in Our Ranks: The Case of Gay Black Males

The great comedian Chris Rock once stated that there was a Civil War occurring in Black America between “Black folk and Niggas” and the comedian humorously related that the latter group had to go. Within any society there are contentious battles between groups that usually boil down to matters of power; meaning who will have the right to direct the political plans and trajectory of the race going forward. Make no mistake about it, Black America has always been steeped in such battles.

Fortunately for African-Americans, there was never a time where one part of the population worked to separate from another part. There seemed to be an understanding that there was strength in numbers regardless of the in-house discord that may be occurring. When things got tough, and they often did for African-Americans, there was no doubt that we had each others backs.

This commitment to uplifting the entire race was evident despite socioeconomic differences, political disagreements, even skin color politics were insufficient to cause Black folk to divest from what was truly a tenuous solidarity. Even the most divisive matter, homosexuality, to be found amongst a people who had thrown all of their eggs in the Christianity basket did not cause a segment of our population to go AWOL from the African-American struggle; although ostracized, Black Gays still fought for inclusion inside of the Race. One must remember that during the tumultuous twentieth-century the African-American freedom struggle was aided, if not led, by AfricanAmerican homosexuals such as: Alice Walker, Bayard Rustin, Alvin Ailey, Audre Lord, Langston Hughes and James Baldwin. These facts are worth noting because there appears to be dissension in the ranks of Black America coming from one particular population; Gay Black men.

One has to wonder if this decision by many Gay Black men to accentuate their sexuality over their racial identity is a reaction to the Black community not accepting what Christians call their “perverse lifestyle.” Tyler James

Williams, an actor who appeared in the film “Dear White People” weighed in on this issue when he stated “Whether we like to address it or not, the African American community is notoriously homophobic.” Williams goes further in his commentary to link up the issue of Gay Rights with Civil Rights, a posture that the vast majority of African-Americans vehemently protest. The actor relates that the increasing division between Black males, Gay vs. Straight, flows from the latter making the conscious decision to repudiate their Gay brethren.

Williams relates that many Black males initially identified with him, however, that association swiftly routinely unraveled in the following way. “Okay, you’re a black male on TV. I am you.

Wait, you’re gay? I’m not gay! No, no never mind, we’re not the same thing.

Forget you. We shun you now.”

According to Williams there is a culture amongst African-American males that calls for them to ‘keep it real’. However, when Black Gay Males attempt such they are shunned by the community. Williams laments that “It’s hard to please everybody and stay black and proud.”

According to Sholnn Freeman, “Personally, I think (white) society is at an unprecendented stage of openness…

A lot of (Black) people still have big problems, though. One of the main issues that came up again and again that night was homophobia -- homophobia in the (Black) church, inside (Black) families and in (Black) society.”

Freeman continued with a damning statement against the Black Church, an institution that many consider the source of much homophobia. “The church is a central institution for a lot of black people, gay men too. But the opposition to homosexuality has caused a lot of pain. It comes up again and again.”

Considering the aforementioned disdain hurled at Gay Black Males, they have apparently decided to ‘break away’ from the traditional priorities of their Black male counterparts, meaning accentuating their racial identity prior to anything else, and close ranks in an

unprecedented manner.

We MUST Understand and make no mistake about it, one only needs to look at the highest-ranking administrators at a typical Historically Black College, American Corporation, or Non-Profit Agency and it will be clear that Gay Black Males have risen while their straight counterparts have lagged behind at an alarming rate. The primary catalyst behind their ascension is a solidarity that would actually uplift African-Americans out of their historic politico economic issues if they applied it as diligently. It does not take much investigation to determine that these educated Gay Black Males have pledged themselves to helping one another via an intricate network that has proven impenetrable to straight Black males. Put simply, they have pledged to take care of their own; and in this case being Gay, Male, and Black outweighs all other considerations.

One of my straight contemporaries related a recent story of being sent to an awards banquet to honor African-American males’ for their academic prowess, a night where sizable scholarships were being doled out I might add. To his horror and chagrin, he learned that not only were ALL of the recipients young Gay Black Males, but also each of the members of the awards committee were Gay Black Males. To him the message was clear, highly-educated, professional, Gay Black Males had abandoned the fruitless pursuit of inclusion with their Black male counterparts, and decided to build and take care of their own.

If you doubt what I say is true, simply look around at who is in charge of today’s institutions that are molding the minds of the next generation of young Black Males; and if you think that our community has problems now, trust me when I say, ‘you haven’t seen anything yet!’

Mr. Roy Dean Moore & Anthony Stewart

HOUSTON - Born the seventh of nine children to Bob and Ollie Moore in Gause, Robertson County, Texas, is Roy Dean Moore. As a child, Moore recalls that his family would go out in far West Texas each year to pick and pull cotton in the field for the first half of the school year while many of the other students were in school. When he did get the chance to attend school, he was already a semester behind the majority. This situation created a sense of insecurity within himself as far as his abilities. No one appeared to recognize the need for assistance in getting caught up in schoolwork.

Due to this circumstance, Moore did not feel that he was very smart. When other children within his class were answering questions, he resorted to silence. Nevertheless, he attended elementary school in Robertson County to about the the fifth grade.

Not much long afterwards, his family relocated to Houston. At this time, he attended E.O. Smith Jr. High and his first two years of

high school, he attended, Wheatley High School. But, when the zoning lines were drawn up, it zoned him to Kashmere High School, from which he ultimately graduated. Though, Moore finished at Kashmere, he revealed that he still considers himself a part of Wheatley High School as well.

After high school, not really being sure of the path that he wanted to pursue professionally, he became a breakfast cook at Hermann Hospital.

A year later, he was drafted into the United States military. Early in his military service, he was given aptitude tests, along with other soldiers who were from all over the United States with varied backgrounds.

He noticed upon completion of those tests that he would always rank in the top 5-10%. This factor served as one that transformed his original notion that he was not as “smart” as others within his own age group.

Therefore, Moore began to feel more secure and confident within himself.

him because for years he dealt with insecurity issues related to his childhood education. At this point, his life began to change.

While serving in the military he was stationed in: Fort Polk, Louisiana, Fort Knox, Kentucky and Fort Devens, Massachusetts. Eventually, he received the order to go to Vietnam, where he served for one tour with a combat unit. With an honorable discharge from the service, he returned to Houston and began to seek employment. He was personally interviewed by and hired by W. H. Curtin to work for W.H. Curtin Chemical Company and was the first Black to work in the office area there. After a year or so, he took an exam and was offered employment with the United State Post Office. While there, he was very active in the union and was one of a group who started an adopt-afamily program for Christmas. He also served on the federal campaign advisory board for United Way. For a number of years, he worked both jobs at the same time. He would also buy real estate throughout the city.

Then, in the late 1960’s his uncle who owned a trucking company offered it for purchase by him and two of his brothers. At the age of 27, he was able to go into business for himself. This resulted in Triple M Transfer (including brothers Charles, now deceased, and Cesar), which provided local hauling for every major warehouse in the Houston area. Eventually, the trucking business paved the way for the acquisition of a storage facility which received direct train delivery of Royal Oak charcoal and Scott tissues and from which it was distributed throughout the city. They effectively operated for a number of years. Within the same time period, they bought a Phillip 66 and an Exxon service station.

His brother Cesar left the trucking business that they all owned due to another career goal of becoming a postmaster which he achieved. Moore and his brother Charles, continued on

in the trucking business and added to their resume the establishment three, R& C Diners/nightclubs.

Struck by illness, he retired from the post office and his businesses.

Nonetheless, the decisions that he had made in purchasing real estate, prior to the age of 30 proved, to be very beneficial for him. Thus, he continued buying properties, never selling any of them. By the age of 32, he turned all of his real estate into a blind trust as he wanted to make sure that his children were secure. Once he was sure that his family was “set up”, and after recovering from illness, he went back to work needing something to do. This landed him a career at the Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority (MHMRA) of Harris County. He initiated his career at the entry-level status.

Moore shared that a federal judge’s order in 1981 required that all mental health workers receive specific training related to dealing with people with disabilities and aggressive mental health patients. This meant that all workers who dealt with people in these categories would have to receive training. Seeing a money-saving opportunity for the organization, he proposed that he go to Rusk State Hospital and receive all the related training which he could then provide locally to MHMRA and even those without the organization, eliminating or reducing the travel and housing expense for all others requiring training. This included, amongst others, probation officers, child care workers, law enforcement, bus operators, prison guards, etc. The proposal was accepted and he was given authority to proceed in its implementation.

He took on the task of teaching the staff locally, starting as a trainer and was promoted to Director of Staff Development, a subsidy of Human Resources. Here he was one of the founding members of the “adopt a family” program and chaired the committee. This program received inputs from staff social workers in selecting families to receive “wish list” gifts for the holidays.

During this time, he became the founding chair of the MHMRA inhouse furniture bank, using the Jerry Lewis telethon as a model. Phone banks were set up in MHMRA administrative buildings on weekends;

friends and family were recruited to man the phone bank, making and receiving related to donations to the furniture bank. This eventually evolved into the Houston Furniture Bank, headed currently by a former colleague and mentee, Oli Mohammed.

The bank was implemented to serve patients who were transitioning out of mental health facilities, and has seen much success to this day.

Moore noted that MHMRA had several in-house conferences targeting individual groups, such as Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, etc. Upon the arrival of Steven Schnee, Director/ President of MHMRA of Harris County, Moore proposed that these conferences be combined, saving time, money, effort and fostering collaboration between groups. He received approval. Within three years, this conference went from a local in-house conference to a five-state conference with co-sponsorship with the office of the commissioner of mental health for the State of Texas.

This conference became a multicultural effort and event, attended by people from a multitude of places and appropriately called “Multicultural Conference”. He was able to acquire people from all over the USA as speakers and workshop conductees for this grand event, including the Surgeon General of the USA, the world renowned Dr. Stephen Klineberg of Rice University and the Rev. Bill Lawson, to name just a few.

It ended up being a four-day conference, averaging attendance between 500 - 700 people. Additionally, he was responsible for all special events, health fairs and conferences.

This conference reflected Moore’s strong belief in crossing cultural bridges, that some of the challenges we have is that we don’t know and understand each other.

Over the years, Moore became a part of every ethnic chamber of commerce in Houston, extending to his own ethnicity.

Twila Carter enters her second season as Executive Director of the Astros Foundation and Sr. Vice President of Community Relations. She made the transition to baseball in 2011 with Jim Crane’s purchase of the Astros franchise leading the creation and implementation of the Astros Foundation Community Leaders program. The Community Leaders program provides newly renovated baseball and softball fields to Houstonarea children through an $18 million investment in city-owned public parks. To date, 20 fields in eight parks have been renovated.

Prior to her current role, Twila served as the project manager for many of the recent Minute Maid Park renovations, including the Diamond Club, Union Station, Astros team stores, Astros Clubhouse and other areas at Minute Maid Park.

Twila has overseen the development of numerous projects for Crane Capital Group, including the building of the Crane Worldwide headquarters which opened in April of 2012. Twila has worked with the Crane Group in various capacities since 1998.

SOMEBODY IS LYING!

John 4:20 admonishes that, “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?” So why then is there so much division and discord found in people who claim that they love God? God said it through the revelation and denotation of John the beloved, not me! Within in the church, there are talented people that will sing, shout, pray and even preach you out of your seat.

Yet, the moment they are done, immediately begin rendering thoughts and actions in ways uncommon to the will of God. I am writing from my pen to state that, there is something going on within the walls of our churches, sanctuaries, temples, tabernacles and ultimately the body of Christ as a whole, that just shouldn’t be. Animosity, hate, envy, jealousy, strife and judgmental hypocrites amidst a number of other abominable sins are prevalent which exists to continually cripple the potency of the gospel. All I’m am expressing is, “Somebody is Lying!” Because, these things should not be in the house of God and neither should these attitudes be exemplified within the body of Christ.

For Matthew 5:14-15 declares that, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.” Therefore, since we as born-again believers baptized into the body of Christ are supposed to be the light of the TX-8

world; Jesus pronounced that we should, “show some sign”.

He said to, “Let our light so shine before men, that they may see our good works, and glorify our Father which is in heaven” St. Matthew 5:16. However, when we do the contrary and opt out of the ordinance that He left on record for us; but yet profess to be sons and daughters of the Most High, this lets the world know that, “Somebody is Lying!”

To that regard, it is so funny how every creature that God has made obeys Him except for humanity. Since the Bible is supposed to be the blueprint and guideline for those who believe and testify of Him, we find in it the encouragement of unity rather than division.

It may be found in St. Mark 3:24-25 that a house divided is not profitable in the kingdom.

Jesus himself declared that, “if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”

Thus, in the Bible, you will not find two angels fighting or warring against one another. On the contrary, what you will find is a fallen angel and an angel in combat with one another, relative to Daniel the 10th chapter and throughout the book of the Apocalypse (Revelation). Even in the New Testament when the Apostle Paul was in the process of one of his missionary journeys and “contention” arose between he and John Mark there was not a remarkable dissension found within the body of Christ that extended until death.

in II Timothy 4:11, that Paul requested that, that same John Mark accompany him once again. But how is it that “socalled” saints hold grudges against one another and it extends even up until death? This lets me know that, “Somebody is Lying!” Because if there just has to be any form of disagreement that is to arise amongst believers then it should at least be an agreement to disagree.

There is just a way to do anything, especially on the strength of I Corinthians 14:40.

The scripture which confirms that all things should be done decently and in order! Jesus left on record the way that saints are supposed to treat and handle one another. A snippet of two of those commandments entail St. John 13:34-35 and St. Luke 6:31.

John states, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

Out of the writing of Luke the physician it is penned that, “as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.”

So in the words of my father, Pastor Richard Jones, Sr. “those who believe that they are on their way to heaven anyhow” would be wise to heed to the teachings of Christ; because if not the world will be able to tell that, “Somebody is Lying!”

COLLEGE STATION – As predicted in March, this year’s peach crop is turning out to be one of the best in many years. In March, Dr. Larry Stein, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulturist at Uvalde, noted that peaches throughout the state had experienced some of the best chilling hours they had in years.

At that time, Stein joked that he feared that being too optimistic might “jinx” the crop, as there was still the remote chance that a light freeze could decimate an otherwise good crop. But that fear turned out to be ungrounded. If there were any challenges, they were from rains coming in some areas every two or three days, which increased disease problems, particularly brown rot, a fungus that infects the fruit, shoots and flowers of peaches. Stein said the harvest is about mid-stage, and there’s not much that could derail the crop at this time except for an extended wet period.

CORPUS CHRISTI - Texas OneGulf, led by the Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, is one of the first RESTORE Centers of Excellence in the nation to receive an award from the U.S. Treasury, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Commissioner Toby Baker announced Tuesday. Texas was the first state to receive U.S. Treasury funds to support its RESTORE Centers of Excellence, research centers created after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to direct penalties in support of programs, projects, and activities that restore and protect the environment and economy of the Gulf Coast region. Texas OneGulf, a consortium of nine Texas institutions, and the Subsea Systems Institute at the University of Houston will equally share an initial $4.036 million. The establishment of the centers is part of Texas’ ongoing implementation of the federal RESTORE Act, which requires that the five Gulf States affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill establish centers to conduct research on the Gulf Coast region.

HOUSTON - Every summer galleries throughout Southeast Texas proudly join together to exhibit print work in the PrintHouston 2015 exhibition. Houston Community College is once again partnering with PrintMatters Houston to host Impressions 2015.The West Loop Campus installment is one showing out of 25 of the most prestigious museums and galleries spanning from Houston to Galveston, including the Museum of Fine Arts. It showcases some of the most noted print artists in the Gulf Coast area. The HCC West Loop Gallery will display work from 31 different PrintMatters member artists. Free and open to the public, Impressions 2015 Artist Reception is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 16. Gallery goers will have a chance to meet with artists and talk to them about their training and techniques. The West Loop Gallery is located at 5601 West Loop South.This exhibition showcases a variety of print work, from traditional woodcuts and etchings to explorations with multiple processes and new technologies.

PrintMatters is the largest printmaking organization in the Gulf Coast Region. It originally began with five artists all sharing a love for print work, a desire to promote traditional and non-traditional printmaking and work and to help promote print artists. HCC is one of three of colleges represented in this year’s nationally recognized exhibition. PrintHouston provides a plethora of opportunities for viewing original printmaking pieces. This is the second year that HCC is hosting the Impressions exhibit. The exhibition is one of many to come to the West Loop Gallery. The West Loop Campus Art Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 10a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday. The artwork will be available for viewing through the end of July.

HOUSTON - The Houston Police Department wants to remind everyone that firearms safety is a responsibility we must all share, especially with regards to our children. With children out of school and spending more time at home, there is more of an opportunity for something tragic to happen if someone owns a weapon and it is not properly secured. Potential tragedies can be avoided by following these gun safety tips: Keep all firearms out of reach of children. They should be stored unloaded and under lock and key.

Do not hide them under pillows or in bedside tables or nightstands.

Talk to your children about the dangers of firearms and remind them these are NOT toys!

Most importantly, childproof your gun with a trigger guard or some other safety device.

One should always assume and treat a firearm as if it was loaded.

Teach your children to Stop, Don’t Touch, Run Away and Tell a Grown Up! Under the Texas Penal Code, making a firearm accesible to a child is a Class C misdemeanor. If a child discharges a firearm causing serious bodily injury or death to himself /herself or another person, it is a Class A misdemeanor. HOUSTON - Maestro Richard Lee, director of bands, has been invited to be the guest conductor and clinician of the Bahamas All-Stars Marching Band who will be conducting its annual summer concert June 28, 2015 on the Island of New Providence in the Bahamas.

This unique concert style will include performances from the Bahama All-Stars concert band, drumline, auxiliary group and marching band. A mixture of concert pieces, local songs and popular music will be featured. Maestro Lee will conduct two pieces during the concert and hold a student/directors clinic on band development for two hours.

HUSTON-TILLOTSON UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY ADDS ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES TO TOBACCO-FREE POLICY

AUSTIN - Huston-Tillotson University achieved another historical milestone when it became the first college or university in Central Texas and the first Historically Black College and University in Texas to go tobacco-free in 2011.

Now, the campus community has strengthened its policy by adding electronic cigarettes to the list of unacceptable smoking products.

Effective May 28, 2015, the president approved the recommendation from faculty, staff, and students to include electronic cigarettes as part of its tobacco-free campus. The identification is unique in that HT has no campus designated smoking areas throughout its tobacco-free zone.

The HT community and many visitors to the East Austin expressed their environmental preferences through a survey conducted by student peer educators on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Communities Putting Prevention Together sub-grant through the City of Austin and from the Environmental Health TX-10

and Safety Committee. The survey found that almost 80% of students, staff, and faculty were in favor of a tobacco-free Huston-Tillotson campus.

Tobacco use is the leading

cause of preventable deaths and diseases in the United States with African Americans suffering disproportionately in mortality rates and on the severity of illnesses due to its use. Tobacco use is defined as the use of cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, snuff, pipes, snus, electronic cigarettes, and any non-FDA approved nicotine delivery device. Electronic cigarettes are any electronic oral device, such as one composed

of a heating element, battery, and/or electronic circuit, which provides a vapor of nicotine or any other substance, and the use or inhalation which simulates the smoking of a tobacco cigarette, pipe, or cigars.

Furthermore, an “electronic cigarette” is described as any such device, whether manufactured, distributed, marketed, or sold as electronic cigarette, electronic cigar, electronic cigarillo, electronic pipe, electronic hookah, or under any other similar product name or descriptor. The term electronic cigarette does not include any asthma inhaler or other device that may be specifically approved by United States Food and Drug Administration as a nicotine delivery device.

JARVIS’ ACCREDITATION IS OFFICIALLY REAFFIRMED

HAWKINS - Jarvis Christian College is pleased to announce that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has officially reaffirmed the College’s accreditation.

Jarvis completed the process and had its site visit last October 2014. The College received no recommendations requiring further reporting and no follow-up to its Compliance Certification Document. On June 13th, an official announcement was made stating that Jarvis Christian College’s accreditation was reaffirmed.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the regional body for the accreditation of degreegranting higher education institutions in the Southern states. Jarvis Christian College is accredited to award degrees by SACSCOC. The reaffirmation process occurs every ten (10) years. As part of this process, institutions prepare an extensive Compliance Certification Report documenting commitment/ compliance to the SACSCOC Principles of Accreditation. The institution also prepares a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to improve a specific aspect of its educational program. Jarvis’ plan is JSTAR, Jarvis Students TAckling Reading. These documents are reviewed by representatives of peer institutions, culminating with a site visit by a visiting team.

Dr. Lester C. Newman, Jarvis Christian College’s president, said this regarding the SACSCOC Reaffirmation, “The favorable review of the College’s academic programs and administrative functions is an endorsement of the value that Jarvis is delivering to its students. 9 HARRIS COUNTY TEENS TRAVEL TO NEW YORK CITY’S CARNEGIE HALL TO GAIN NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING MEDALS

Some of the best teen writers and artists from Harris County traveled to New York City’s Carnegie Hall in June to be honored with Scholastic Art & Writing Silver and Gold Medals. In all, 39 Harris County teen writers and artists earned recognition as national Scholastic Art & Writing medalists. Nine made their way to New York City with four teachers to earn their awards. The Awards are sponsored regionally by Harris County Department of Education.

“For over 90 years, Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has recognized the amazing talent of teen artists and writers,” said Harris County Department of Education Scholastic Art & Writing coordinator Melba Kent. “With over 300,000 entries, we are HCDE proud of our Harris County medalists.”

“What the Awards do is give students that boost of confidence in their abilities in art and writing and ultimately their futures,” said Kent. “What our teens say is that they see limitless possibilities for their futures after being recognized in New York City.”

Medals were awarded to students and their teachers from Aldine, CypressFairbanks, Deer Park, Houston, Huffman, Katy, Klein, Spring Branch, Tomball, The Village School and St. John’s School.

Students traveling to New York City were Pasadena ISD students Vanessa Sosa and Denise Molina along with teacher Victor Raygoza and Daniel Reyna, Sam Rayburn High; and Linda Dixon and Michelle Nguyen of Bondy Intermediate along with teacher Tara Thompson. Pasadena ISD visual art curriculum specialist for K-12 Shannon Raygoza also attended. Klein ISD students

were Theiija Balasubramanian of Doerre Intermediate; Sanah Jivani of Klein Collins High School; and Julianna Teoh, Klein Oak High School. St. John’s School student was Yuming Ren; and Aldine ISD student was Jose Gutierrez along with teacher Marilyn Venne.

Students attending the ceremonies in New York City along with some of their teachers were interviewed in the Big Apple.

Here are some of their stories: VANESSA SOSA, PASADENA ISD, SAM RAYBURN HIGH SCHOOL: Sosa earned four Gold Medals, $10,000 scholarship for her art portfolio and a $500 award for best-in-grade for art, a national award which recognizes the most outstanding works in each grade level.

Sosa’s art portfolio entitled “Beautiful Chaos” settles on imperfections by featuring broken objects, mainly through still life paintings of broken objects and foods.

“It reflects about how people are imperfect, but that is what makes them exciting—it’s how people stand out,” she said.

College bound to the University of Texas, Sosa believes that she can become an illustrator and pursue a professional fine arts career.

“To be recognized is a big deal,” said Sosa. “It has given me a lot of self confidence. Before, I didn’t think this was possible.”

She recognizes teacher Daniel Reyna for helping her believe in her ability and teaching her art technique. As Sosa’s teacher, he receives $250 for the Best in Grade Award.

“Scholastic allows kids to express themselves and offers them a great opportunity to come to New York,” Reyna said.

JOSE GUTIERREZ, ALDINE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, DAVIS HIGH SCHOOL: Gutierrez earned the American Visions Award, a national art award given to one visionary artist from each region. He gained a Gold Medal and Silver Medal for his digital art piece entitled “Line Up.” Captured with a cell phone, the photo used for his digital piece features an Oregon tree orchard with trees aligned symmetrically.

“I never knew one photo could get me this far,” said Gutierrez. Teacher Marilyn Venne, who calls her student “an amazing artist with a great portfolio”, does not share his modest viewpoint.

“Scholastic is the best showcase of all to showcase your kids’ artwork,” she said.
