Conebread & Beans Before I Lay it Down...

’m a Southern Boy, raised deep in the heart of Texas. If you’ve read my Spiveytorials closely, you’d know by now that I come from a big family. Not just yo “ordinary big family”, but one consisting of my parents and their 13 children. Tack on 42 grandchildren and 26 greatgrandchildren, holidays and family reunions in “Spiveydom” are fantastic! We have a great time. Going back to my adolescence, I often wondered how my folks fed the 13 of us and kept a roof over our heads.

What was even more astounding was how they kept all of us fed.

enjoy a variety of food delicacies.

People from Louisiana have their boudin and crawfish. Them Cajuns also enjoy cracklings and spicy rice.

Mississippians love catfish and those Carolinians love their fried trout.

Georgians boast over their peach cobblers. That’s all and good, but it doesn’t compare to that all-time Southern favorite: “Red beans and cornbread”.

My mom could cook a pot of red beans so tasty that it’d make you wanna go “slap YO momma”.

That’s not something that I’d advise, however. Nobody in their right mind would wanna slap they own momma.

Don’t do that. Momma Spivey would soak them beans overnight and put them in a big-ass pot the next morning. She would chop up some onions and sauté some ground meat to throw up in there. I used to watch her as she’d sprinkle the right amount of chili pepper into it and cover that pot with a lid. She would turn the heat down low and let them beans simmer for at least 5 or six

When we got home from school, the house had a tasty aroma of them red beans. I could see my momma standing over the stove stirring them with tender, loving, care, all the while knowing that she had a hungry bunch of Negros ready to devour them. We were called Negroes back then. Momma would then go to the “Frigidaire” (y’all don’t nothing about that) and take out a big pan of seasoned chicken. On the otha side of the stove being heated was that big, black, cast iron skillet full of “Crisco” oil, artery-clogging grease that would sustain life in our families for years to come. There were always two cans of Crisco; one was for “new grease” the other for “old grease” which was recycled.

Remember that?

Momma Spivey would then batter that chicken and toss it into the frying pan. Ohhhh, the aroma of fried chicken cooking and red beans simmering was the stuff that legends are made of. But, that wasn’t the end

of this grand feast. No-siree-bob!

(Who’s Bob?) Momma would pull out her world famous “conebread” mix. She would whip it up by hand.

None of that blender ISH. My momma was old school. We didn’t have one of those pans with the little individual muffin compartments, mom had those big-ass round pans that were deep. Sorta like those deep dish pizza pans from Pizza Hut. When that conebread came outha oven, it looked, tasted, and smelled like a pound cake. Lawd, have mercy! My ass is getting hungry ret now!

We’d all be summoned to the kitchen table. It was a BIG kitchen table. Had to be with all of us around it. My daddy never came to the table. He always sat in his Lazy Boy recliner and my mom delivered his food to him. She treated him like the king he was/is. That’s why she never had to work a regular job a day in her life. He took care of my mom. Hell, he should have built her a castle with all of those damn kids she had for

him. Nevertheless, daddy ALWAYS got his plate FIRST. They’ve been married 57 years.

As you can see by many of my pictures on Facebook, my family never suffered from starvation. As a matter of fact, it appears as if we were a little TOO well fed. It didn’t help that most of us saturated our beans with bowls of sugar. Some of y’all know what I’m talking about.

I still do it today. Those beans and “conebread” put some meat on our bones! They also help us to appreciate the hard work and effort that our parents put in to make sho that we were well-taken care of. Southern people can relate to that. In closing, many of you grew up in households where simple foods such as beans and conebread were important staples of your diet. To those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, I’ll be happy to invite you to one of our family reunions. Come dine with us… God bless, good night, and keep yo families together.

GOP plays to its base. Lynch’s confirmation delay is nothing more than bells, whistles and red meat for the right-wing. It’s yet another message that Blacks, women and quote “others” are expendable, and the least priority at best; they are in fact targeted by this crowd.

In the time that the U.S. Senate held Lynch hostage, they have confirmed several judges and even a new Secretary of Defense. Not only is Lynch supremely qualified (one need only look at her stellar track record), but as the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, she has already been confirmed by the Senate twice. This makes it all the more poignant that some on the right want us to know that an over-qualified woman and “uppity Blacks” will be put in their place. Even in 2015, someone like Lynch can be used as a rallying cry for the base of a Party that will have

to come to terms with the changing demographics of this nation.

The poisonous and ugly spirit by some, but clearly not all Republicans, is what we see also in the fight for voting rights in places like Texas and in the fight against police brutality in North Charleston to Staten Island where we become the target for merely standing up for equal treatment and equal opportunity. Whether it’s the push for pay equity, police reform across the board, reinstating all protections of the Voting Rights Act, gender equality, fair housing, jobs, education and much more, those working for what is right are often castigated by the right-wing in an attempt to preserve the status quo. That is precisely what we are seeing here again in this ridiculous delay to confirm Lynch.

It is my understanding, if I am to go by one Republican Senator, that Lynch may finally receive a confirmation vote sometime this week. But the fact that this highly accomplished Black woman had to wait for this vote twice as long as her seven predecessors combined is insulting and inexcusable. It should be interpreted and understood for what it really says to the majority of Americans: not only are some Republicans arrogantly playing politics with the President, but they chose a woman and an African American to make their point. This behavior clearly represents what many in the civil rights community have been saying all along -- the

1.1 Trillion Dollars? We Must Not Give It All Away: Manhood, Race & Culture

Crafting a Plan to Save Black Males Economically

T

he number of 1.1 Trillion is nearly incomprehensible; in fact when I initially attempted to write it down I was unsure if I had written it down correctly. The number reads as follows 1,100,000,000,000. It is this amazing number that an economic study recently stated represents the amount of dollars that the AfricanAmerican community will have at its disposal in 2015. Yet, we remain financially chained to the bottom of America’s economic ladder. Making the problem even more problematic is the reality that so-called Black leaders have been mute on the issue; apparently they are too busy reacting to the latest killing or offense at the hands of whites.

I must admit that this number --- 1,100,000,000,000 --- has stuck in my head since I became aware of its significance to Black America.

This number has made me wonder several things such as how can African-Americans’ be so poor, yet have so many financial resources at their disposal.

The answer to this query is undoubtedly complex, yet in many ways relatively simple. It could be as possible as understanding the age old statement that “a fool and his money, will always part.”

Put simply, African-Americans have historically been financially foolish and nearly every dime that they received has disappeared from their hands. One does not need to be a financial wizard or historian to comprehend that money is King in America; a cursory examination of American history would relate such. One can only hope that any

examination of America’s financial history impresses upon the reviewer that collectivism is the only path to the financial uplifting of any race/ ethnicity. It is only through collectivist economics that we are able to offer African-American males much needed financial help, many of whom are being hindered by criminal backgrounds and marginal educations.

In the year 2013, AfricanAmerican males made $37,290, a significant distance from the $48,099 all other males’ earnings, and 40% of African-American males ages ‘16 and up’ had zero earnings for the entire year. Shockingly, 1 out of every 4 Black males lived below the poverty level in 2013.

For many African-American males, their engagement with higher education is a lesson in futility. The greatest evidence of such is that for African-American males age 25 and up, 48% have attended college at some point in their lifetime.

However, only 17% have matriculated from institutions of higher education with a Bachelor’s degree or higher.

African-American males possessing a college degree also lag behind their white counterparts in every economic measure and inexplicably refuse to divorce themselves from a system that does not reward them financially. They refuse to embrace entrepreneurial opportunities and service the needs of a Black community with $1,100,000,000,000.00 (yes, 1.1 trillion dollars) to spend.

Non-degreed African-American males all too often find themselves involved in the criminal justice system. The incarceration rate of African-American males is triple that of other American males and more disturbing is the reality that approximately 34% of all workingage African-American males not incarcerated are ex-offenders convicted of some type of a felony.

aya Angelou, a great author and poet from the Black community came to the conclusion of a thought that I must admit, I absolutely agree with.

She stated, “I’m grateful to intelligent people. That doesn’t mean educated. That doesn’t mean intellectual. I mean really intelligent.

What Black old people used to call ‘mother wit’ means intelligence that you had in your mother’s womb. That’s what you rely on.

You know what’s right to do... My mother said I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy. That some people, unable to go to school, were more educated and more intelligent than college professors.”

I often sit around and think about the state of our Black communities and families. I think about how some people have the mindset, that a piece of education makes them more than other people. This can be a very dangerous attitude.

We MUST Understand, that there are some things that school absolutely can not teach you at all. I have always believed that the school of life, will teach a person more than any institution ever established could. Because, it never ceases to amaze me how when I was a boy growing up, the old folks in the community did not have a lot of education; but they got so much accomplished. They were equipped with: common sense, persistence, determination and the willpower to see their families succeed. And they made it happen, by any means necessary within the restraints of the law.

I have to stress and place emphasis on the fact that our parents, grandparents and ancestors did not have the luxury of acquiring various forms of education from higher learning institutions. But that which they did have, they made it work and they made it work for the betterment of all those around them. With just a little bit, mothers

and fathers from our communities were able to send their children to school off of working jobs that paid less than minimum wage.

During those days, not one person in the home went without food, shelter or clothing. It was a time when we may not have had all that our White counterparts had the luxury of having, but we were grateful for every little bitty thing that we did have. Those old folks laid and built strong foundations for the generations that were to come after them. Foundations that have allowed for us as a race of people to be educated and have equal rights.

We MUST Understand, it was people of low degree that stood, marched, fought and lost their lives just so that Black people could vote. It was not that they were all that educated, but they did have knowledge, common sense and understanding. They had enough common sense to know that a person should be treated fairly regardless of what color they were.

The times were different and life was much easier and less stressful then too.

But, my how times have changed! These days, there are members from our communities who are highly-educated and making in one year what some of our fathers and forefathers never made in a whole lifetime. The irony, however, is that while they may make this amount they are still struggling to survive. I don’t understand how people can get so educated, that they overlook simple common sense.

Then again, I am reminded of the words of my wife. She often says,”Common sense ain’t all that common, if everybody don’t have it!” While it may appear to be humorous to a certain extent, the sad reality is that it’s true.

Now make no mistake, I am in no way shape, form or fashion against education. But for some people, they can have too much

education and it can serve to be their very downfall. People that know too much live in a fantasy world and only what they know is how they view the world. This attitude leaves very little room for growth and a lot of room for error. Because a person that has too much education, knows it all.

And common sense will tell you that, “nobody knows-it-all...” But as stated previously it, “ain’t all that common, if everybody don’t have it.”

Even as I pen this editorial, I am reminded of a former president, Calvin Coolidge, who gave his opinion on persistence.

He said,”Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.

Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.

Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

This thought apparently our forefathers knew had some truth to it, because they were absolutely persistent and determined to make things happen and they did. Even right now today, we Africans in America are still living off of the battles fought by our forefathers.

And that’s all many of them had was some common sense, persistence, faith and determination We MUST Understand, that a person that sets a task for themselves and remains persistent and dedicated to their goal, is more likely to accomplish it. On the other hand, education and talent are not always the keys that unlock the door. Some things require more motivating factors than what school could teach a person.

HOUSTON - Just recently, the House Bill 910 was approved by the Texas House, on a vote of 101 to 42. The bill is one that has been strongly supported by the National Rifle Association and sponsored by State Representative Larry Phillips.

The basis of the bill according to the Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee Report is to allow licensed handgun holders the opportunity to carry their handguns.

The report indicated that, “Interested parties note that Texas is one of only a few states that completely prohibit the open carry of a handgun and that many surrounding states allow for the open carry of a handgun in some form. These parties assert that Texas law should allow the open carry of a handgun because concealed handgun license holders in Texas have a long-established record of law-abiding and responsible behavior. C.S.H.B. 910 seeks to provide for the open carry of a holstered handgun.”

Therefore, this bill will alleviate the past requirement whereas concealed handgun license holders keep their TX- 4

firearms concealed. Under this bill license holders will have the option to carry their handgun on them fully or partially displayed in a belt or shoulder holster.

Currently, 43 states allow open carry for concealed handgun licensed holders. Since approval by the Texas House the bill will now be passed onto the Texas Senate for further consideration.

While lobbyists for the National Rifle Association, other organizations, representatives and concealed handgun license holders are elated that the bill has been approved and appears to be on its way into effect in the state of Texas; not everyone shares those same sentiments. Members of the Black community have already begun to weigh out what this new implementation could mean for African-Americans.

Just last year, activists, politicians and concerned residents from the Fifth Ward community united together against the tentative plans of members of Open Carry Texas to perform a demonstration in the historical neighborhood.

Open Carry Texas is a group comprised of individuals who have been lobbying to change

gun laws in the state of Texas.

Local police officials were present as, both members from Open Carry Texas and the Fifth Ward community attempted to discuss the group’s plans in regards to the demonstration.

Initially, the meeting began with a calm tone, but eventually escalated as residents began to interrogate the true intentions of representatives of Open Carry.

Some residents argued that, “the group’s motives were racist.” Local activist and Minister for the New Black Panther Party, Quanell X expressed at the gathering that, “We have a bad history with White men who would come into Fifth Ward with guns in the name of a lynch mob.”

In wake of the slew of deaths in recent years caused by police officials within AfricanAmerican communities; members of the community remain passionate about protecting and voicing their concerns. Many African-Americans are associating the passing of open carry, to the careless loss of lives of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Jordan Baker, and most recently Walter Scott.

Though the list remains endless of Black males who have unjustly loss their lives due to police officials across America; many believe that the invasion of open carry, into the African-American community may potentially raise the levels of deaths similar to the occurrences of the fore-mentioned instances.

Local pastor Rev. Lamar Jenkins offered his opinion on the bill that has created much talk within the AfricanAmerican community. He said, “Anybody that carefully researches this bill can understand that there are some hidden agendas. What they are doing is making it more possible for

a police officer to fire. Because truthfully it’s going to be African-Americans and White people alike, going out getting guns, some for protection and some for intimidation purposes.

And police officers who wear guns and have tasers will make sure anything that they do is going to be justified in the eyes of the law.”

He continued, “No matter what police officers have guns, and they also have a badge which states that they are to, ‘protect and serve’. So if everyone is walking around with guns rather concealed or unconcealed, there is still a threat to the general public especially in the African-American community.”

Black Panthers, receiving its name from the co-founder of the party. Members from the club have marched and protested unjust police shootings of unarmed Black males throughout the African-American community. Protesters of the group remain committed to marching to, “promote self-defense and community policing”.

Just last month, the Huey P. Newton Gun Club congregated for a, “Black Lives Matter” march performed in Austin; at the State Capitol Building in reference to open carry. The club adamantly revealed during their march that, “Black open carry is here to stay.”

Concluding, AfricanAmericans should be aware of all the ramifications for invoking their right to open carry.

AUSTIN –Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent in March, down from 4.3 percent in February. The state has not seen a rate this low since July 2007 and Texas continues to trend below the national average of 5.5 percent.

Texas’ total nonfarm seasonally adjusted employment decreased by 25,400 jobs in March’s preliminary estimate.

This comes on the heels of an impressive string of 53 straight months of job growth for the state. Over the year, the state has added 327,500 jobs for an overall growth rate of 2.9 percent, outpacing the national growth rate of 2.3 percent.

“Maintaining a diversity of employment opportunities has kept Texas strong for the past four years,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Andres Alcantar. “We must continue to build and support partnerships that will help connect employers to a quality supply of skilled workers and equip job seekers with training that will help them succeed.”

The Mining and Logging industry, which includes oil and gas employment, saw a decline in March with the loss of an estimated 2,800 jobs statewide.

“While some workers may be temporarily impacted by statewide reductions in the oil and gas industry, our 28 local workforce boards stand ready to help these and all job seekers identify transferrable skills for other employment opportunities or obtain training that will help them quickly transition to new jobs,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton.

The Education and Health Services industry added 3,400 jobs in March, followed in job gains by the Financial Activities industry which increased by 2,400 positions. Job gains were also experienced in the Leisure and Hospitality and Other Services.

“Connecting employers with the workers they need is critical to our state’s success,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Hope Andrade. “Employers and job seekers can access the largest job-matching network in the state through WorkInTexas. com. Today, the site offers more than 250,000 available positions for those seeking work, and a tremendous pool of outstanding job seekers for employers to choose from for their workforce needs.”

The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) had the lowest March unemployment rate in the state at 2.9 percent, followed by the Amarillo MSA with a 3.0 percent rate and the Lubbock, College StationBryan and Austin-Round Rock MSAs at 3.3 percent (not seasonally adjusted).

Hence, are you fearful when in Ferguson, environment, the hood? Be wary of the predators standing on the street corner... loud, sleek, slovenly, in $200 jackets but not one George Washington in their pocket... not knowing when their last Cadillac ride will take place.

Afraid... leery? You should be as every beast will roar in its own den.

Now is not the time to be proud as pride is only as good as far as you can spit. But do be alert, be aware keep your head up, do not smile, a furrowed brow is better than a slap in the face. Never show your teeth. Do not speed up, swiftness has an end but your destination will still be there.

Remember, being unhurried does not prevent one from arriving. Stay cautious. Caution is not a sign of lack of courage. Even ants march armed.

Security in numbers? Your own junkyard dog? Unity, even among the water buffalo, makes the lion lie down hungry.

Damn...

You will come across these hyenas everywhere, in Ferguson, villages, the suburbs, even the QT at the end of the street. And even though you would like to break a coconut over their heads, be wary for they will never stand still. And never, blame God for creating those scourges but thank him... for not giving them wings.

Also be wary of creatures running for apparent reason, especially the ones going around corners, over

fences or through the thorns. Either they are chasing a leopard or a leopard is chasing them. And when leopard appears at your door make sure your gauge is not at your neighbors house.

Dare to Blink You see, Peoplehood is an impossibility without a land base. Not first base, not second base but a land base one can call one’s own. For those of African ancestry on this North American land mass, this will always be their land and will never be their land. A horrible Catch 22.

What do the once great, proud and powerful Indian nations, the Sioux, Cherokee, Navajo and Lakota think about this? A poll taken during the Iraq/Afghan War sums it all up.

It asked the Indians if we should get out of the middle east. Fifteen per cent said we should and 85% said we should get out of America. I want to laugh but I am sure the spirits of Geronimo and Sitting Bull are still gnashing their teeth.

Solution? Sometimes you have to rock the boat or it will just sit there and collect barnacles, but you also should not slay the river otter for it will hurt you.

Will there be a planting and sowing of seeds for a new city? Will there be black helicopters coming? Dorothy and Toto are no longer in Missouri.

Custer did not die for your sins. There is bad news on the doorstep. Clouds are forming and churches ablaze.

Guns and floods, the tide is coming in.

There are indeed gorillas in the mist.

Dare the Sirens...

Get out of the shade and off the grassy knoll, forget the ozone layer and bullet proof vests. Be worthy, be wise. Let the jester steal the thorny crown. Conceal the good you do, be like the Nile which conceals its source. And not like the man who dives into the Mississippi and comes up with a fish in his mouth, for he has insulted the gator.

Up above the River Eagles are crying as they soar over the burning houses of worship below. For they too know their time is coming. Other creatures of high places are also casting their shadow... vultures and choppers. The pews of many of these old and rickety places of worship are filled with former and soon to be, warriors listening to sermons on the glories of peace.

They are told Heaven is not serve by violence and that fire does produce fire, it produces ashes. These services would then be concluded with the classic hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers...” How ironic.

Ferguson is an extreme, Ferguson is a fact of life, Ferguson is contagious. Deal with it. First and foremost when you arise each morning remember the world promises you nothing and that there are indeed... guerillas in the mist.

Throughout that time, we have built a relationship with many small business owners, pastors, churches, corporations, hospitals, residents etc. Each individual(s) that allows African-American News & Issues to be on display in

their establishment, organization or institution are those we consider our partners.

For nearly two decades, the owners of Davis Meat Market (Mr. James, Jr. and Patricia D. Davis) located on 2204 Lockwood Dr., 77020 have been partners of African-American News & Issues.

Thus, the passing of our dearly beloved Patricia D. Davis, was a major loss to our community.

Anyone, that has ever visited Davis Meat Market and come in contact with Mrs. Davis can tell you that she was filled with a warm smile, beautiful personality and humble spirit. Her radiance permeated through Davis Meat Market and allowed anyone entering to feel welcomed and appreciated. Truly, her loving and endearing presence will be missed. ~ REBECCA S. JONES

PASTOR BYRON D. WYATT African-American News & Issues presents Pastor Byron D. Wyatt of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church as our religion profile of the week.

He is a native Houstonian. He received salvation at the age of 11, and was baptized at the Outreach Missionary Baptist Church by Pastor John L. Hart. It was there that he began to work out his soul salvation, serving the Lord in different capacities during his youth. He was a faithful member and served in the Choir and on the Junior Deacon Board.

As he grew in age, he grew in grace and was able to feel and discern the call that His Heavenly Father had placed on his life. He adhered to that call and began teaching and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ on November 27, 1994.

Rev. Byron Wyatt later united with St. Matthew Missionary Baptist

Church under the leadership of Pastor Leroy Lacy Jr. He fulfilled the role of Youth Pastor, after having been appointed. In doing so, he assisted the Senior Pastor and helped prompt the youth’s spiritual growth at the church. From those efforts several youth programs were established and many youth accepted Jesus Christ. As time went on, he continued to preach the gospel and aimed to compel those he came in contact with to accept the Lord as their Savior.

On November 22, 2002, he was elevated to another plateau in the body of Christ; when he answered the call to serve as pastor, and was installed at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.

Since that time, the philosophy of his ministry has been inspired by the life of the Apostle Paul. Paul’s zeal was to spread the gospel of Christ to everyone he encountered. Giving God the praise

Life of Patricia D. Davis

Patricia D. Davis was born May 27, 1951 to Ernest and Delphine Rene in Ville Platte, Louisiana. She was very close to her father who taught her everything from how to change a flat tire to how to turn the other cheek. She carried this independent yet utterly kind outlook throughout her entire story on Earth.

One rainy day in June of 1987, while waiting at the bus stop, she was approached by a gentleman who she would spend the next 27 years of her life with. Together Mr. and Mrs. Davis began to build what would become Davis Meat Company in January of 1988. Mrs. Davis became a mother to a bouncing premature baby boy naming him Jonathan, and affectionately giving him the nickname Poppa. The Davis Family became a team with Mrs. Davis, Mamacita as its backbone, accountant, therapist and so much more. The three headed, of course,

by Pat’s hard work, both behind the counter, behind the computer and taking care of her men, became a fixture in the city of Houston and 5th Ward community.

In 2008, Pat became a grandmother to her best girl, Ms. Madison J. Hall-Davis. Pat and Maddy’s relationship was one of love at first sight. They did everything together from sleeping to planting gardens.

They were inseparable. In 2010, Pat received another bundle under her loving eye. Her Bunny-Bunny, London E. Davis, came into her life, November of 2010. Mow Mow, Maddy and Bunny shared a bond and love so strong that words can’t do it justice. They were her entire world from the moment they entered her life. There was nothing they could do or say to change her view of them - her little angels.

Her love for them was only mirrored by her love for Jonathan. Pop and Mamacita were a tag team from day-one. Inseparable if you saw one,

and taking no credit for himself, he never allowed his personal endeavors to deter him from doing God’s will. He remained steadfast regardless of odds against him.

Thus, Pastor Wyatt wants to use his knowledge, experiences, and strong inter-personal skills to strengthen the Kingdom of God by equipping believers with solid biblical principles to apply to everyday life. Pastor Wyatt believes in the principle that Christianity begins at home. One of the major focal points of his ministry is family. He teaches, “If the family is strong, then the church has the opportunity to be strong and productive.”

Pastor Wyatt is married to Lady Bernadette L. and together they have two children, Brianna Mechelle and Breylon J. Wyatt.

Galilee Missionary Baptist Church has a history that dates back to August 15, 1931. Galilee is a church that is, “living by faith”, according to Romans

1:17 (For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith). The church subscribes to a mission which states, “We are committed to provide sound biblical preaching and teaching of God’s Word. Our mission is to win souls to Christ and to nurture the spiritual growth for all ages by enhancing personal living, family living and social interaction. We want to provide regular and fervent worship opportunities to lead the congregation in the development of a life of devotion and praise.” Galilee also has a vision to, “build the body of Christ through the word of God.” Worship service times are Sunday - Sunday School 9:15am, Morning Worship 10:50am; Wednesday - Prayer 6:30pm and Bible Study 7:00pm.

you saw both. Pat was a fixture at every event Pop participated in. She was a mainstay at every school he attended, ready to accept any role of responsibility they had from chaperone to just bringing the chips. Their love is undeniable and everlasting.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Barbara Hebert.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, James Davis, Jr.,; son, Jonathan “Pop” Davis (Crystal); stepchildren, Sharon Davis, Caroline Davis, James Ray Davis, Ervin Davis, Darlene; Whitney Williams; grandchildren, Madison Hall-Davis and London Davis; siblings, Mary Mayo, Linda Marie Rene, Priscilla Rene, Brenda Johnwell and Anthony Rene; step-grandchildren, Wayne, Kim, Quanta, Edward, Roy, Tasha, Ervin Davis, Jr., Laquita Davis, Quinten and Curtis; step-greatgrandchildren, Chris, Jr., Tierra, Christion, Aaron, Riley, Faith; nieces, nephews and many others whom she loved dearly.

AUSTIN – Renewing the on-andoff again effort to rid the University of Texas campus of Confederate statues, the UT student government has passed a resolution to remove the likeness of Confederate president Jefferson Davis from the South Mall.

Gary Susswein, a UT spokesman, said that university administrators will review the resolution, which the student government approved, and possibly take action.

AUSTIN - Texas police officers can’t legally rummage through a suspected criminal’s cellphone while he sits in jail, and an avenue to get that permission through a search warrant isn’t yet cemented into state law. State lawmakers are trying to solve the conundrum with Senate Bill 1864, which was born out of a recent court case involving an allegedly rowdy teenager on a school bus and his cellphone picture of another boy urinating.

BEAUMONT - The Beaumont Independent School District is taking steps to correct past financial missteps with an audit for the first time in three years. Findings in the report from 2014 show the district nearly hit rock bottom in the funds balance, but is making headway restoring it this year.

The legally required audit is giving the board a look at where the money went and where it remains. A board meeting, an auditor hired by the district outlined the financials for the year ending August 2014, revealed the district ended the year with about $2 million in its funds balance. In the 150 plus page report, the accountants found in part a lack of internal financial controls. The effect was $4 million fraudulently taken from the district by two former employees.

CONROE - In a recent meeting with Montgomery County stakeholders, the Texas Conservative Tea Party Coalition voted to endorse the $350 million mobility bond election scheduled for May 9. During the meeting, Montgomery County Judge Craig Doyal, Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack, former state Rep. Steve Toth, R-The Woodlands, and Nelda Blair, Road Bond Committee co-chairwoman, discussed the mobility bond referendum with tea party coalition board members. Noack said he supports the bond proposal but expressed reservations about the inclusion of the 6-mile Woodlands Parkway extension from FM 2978 to Hwy. 249.

CORPUS CHRISTI - A Black female student at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi returned from Spring Break to find racial slurs scrawled on the walls of her apartment minutes from the college campus.The slurs showed an image of people being hanged with phrases such as “let’s hang a (racial slur)” and “Die (racial slur.) Where is your protector? White power”. A photo shared by Twitter user @johnnyheathcorp shows another that says, “Whites only...where (sic) coming for you.” Corpus Christi Police Chief Floyd Simpson said in a news conference that officers are investigating the case, KRIS 6 reported.

DALLAS - New U.S. Census Bureau figures show Texas is the nation’s second-largest state for population with about 27 million people.

California was the nation’s most populous state in 2014, with 38.8 million residents.The Austin-Round Rock area is the nation’s thirdfastest growing metropolitan area at 3 percent, followed by fourth-place Odessa, Texas, at 2.9 percent. Harris County leads the nation in population growth by person, with the county surrounding Houston adding 89,000 people between July 2013 and 2014.

The Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metro area was also the top in metro area numerical increase with 156,371 people added between 2013 and 2014, followed by the DallasFort Worth-Arlington area with a 131,217-person increase.

GARLAND - Matthew Lee Johnson has been sentenced to die in the burning death of a 76-year-old gas station attendant. The jury, which convicted Johnson, deliberated for most of the day before delivering its decision this morning. The trial will continue with victim impact statements from family members of Nancy Harris, the deceased.

FRIENDSWOOD - A Clear Brook High School freshman was stabbed by a fellow student school district officials said. Clear Creek school district spokeswoman Elaina Polsen said a sophomore and freshman got into a fight that ended when the 10th-grader stabbed the ninth-grader.

HOUSTON - Due to possible exposure to a communicable disease yet to be confirmed, 17 inmates at 701 N. San Jacinto jail, have been placed under quarantine. This means that, until further notice, they are not allowed to leave that area without individual medical review. Visitation for other inmates continues routinely today.

Other jail operations have NOT been affected. Jail medical personnel continue to regularly monitor the affected area & are working in collaboration with Harris county public health and environmental services. Quarantines in an environment such as a jail are not uncommon. They’re done out of an abundance of precaution.

JOPLIN - The city of Joplin is suing its former master developer and two men who ran the Texas-based company. The lawsuit filed seeks $1.5 million from Wallace Bajjali Development Partners and accuses the company of fraud. One of the company’s former partners, David Wallace, filed for bankruptcy in federal court in Houston. The city hired the development partners, of Sugar Land, Texas, in 2012 to lead the Joplin’s recovery from the 2011 tornado. The city learned in January that the company had closed and that Wallace and Costa Bajjali had resigned.

LA MARQUE - La Marque Independent School District trustees will likely be looking for someone to join the board after the upcoming May election. The board grappled with how to deal with mistakenly leaving the Position 2 seat, currently occupied by Shirley Fanuiel, off the May general election at a meeting recently.

MAURICEVILLE - Orange County deputies arrested seven persons on illegal drug charges following a narcotics warrant search at a residence in Mauriceville. An eighth person in the house was arrested on a bad check issuance warrant. During the search of the residence, Narcotics Officers seized in excess of five pounds of high-grade marijuana, over 100 ecstasy tablets and numerous psilocybin (hallucinogenic) mushrooms that were packaged for sale.

NEDERLAND – The Nederland Independent School District has notified parents that a Nederland High School student was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of viral meningitis. Though the test results are not available, Assistant Superintendent Mike Laird issued a statement as a precaution. The message urged parents to go to the doctor if their child exhibits any meningitis symptoms. The symptoms include: severe headache, high fever, nausea, vomitting, fatigue, back and neck pain.

PORT ARTHUR - Union members have approved a new contract with the Total Refinery in Port Arthur. The United Steelworkers Union okayed a four year deal during two ratification meetings, according to information provided by Richard ‘Hoot’ Landry of the USW.

PORT ARTHUR - A disturbance between two men left one with multiple stab wounds and another behind bars early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at The French Connection, 608 Houston Ave.

VICTORIA - The boys and girls club of Victoria held an inaugural event to help the homeless. Club members participated in stuff the backpacks for the homeless. All items used for today’s project were donated through various fundraising events that the club hosts. The backpacks included items for health and personal hygiene. The idea for the event came from social media when a staff member saw a Facebook post and thought it would be a great fundraising event for the students.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton recently sued the Labor Department to overturn the rule, which would have changed the definition of “spouse” to include same-sex couples.

Hoffman Teacher to present at 2015 IB Conference of the Americas

Hoffman Middle School, Aldine ISD, Humanities teacher, Barbara Clemons has been accepted to present at the 2015 IB Conference of the Americas in Chicago July 23rd through July 26th, 2015.

Ms. Clemons’ submission, “The Story Begins”

was accepted out of an “unprecedented number of proposals” by the conference because they believe that it will enrich the professional development experience of the conference attendees.

Ms. Clemons story began when she and fellow teacher, Loretta Asevedo received the Texas IB Schools Innovative Teaching Award last year. Hoffman received one of six grants awarded across the state. The TIBS Innovative Teaching Grants were awarded to recognize outstanding IB teachers and programs and provide funding for the projects.

Ms. Clemons’ was able to present her “IB Interactive Notebook –Approaches to

Learning” with teachers attending the Region IV Social Studies Conference in February. This summer she will be able to share her Interactive Notebook with teachers and educational leaders attending the national conference. Conference attendees will participate in the hands on interactive session that will help create a tool to collect information relevant to the IB Middle School Years Program components, especially the Approaches to Learning skills of organization. Participants will work in groups discussing and planning IB lessons that can be taken back to their students and their home schools.

According to Richard Delgado, this is the first time in Aldine ISD history, that an assistant coach has won this award. Delgado serves as the director of athletics for AISD. Jackson’s role helped the Eisenhower Eagles to an 8-3 this past football season.

This is his fourth year at the campus.

“Coach Jackson’s defense was the number one defense in the district,” Delgado said.

“And his defense is considered one of the best in the state. The defense had three shutouts, allowed only nine points a game and 128 yards a game.”

Dre’ Thompson is also proud of Jackson. Thompson is a former head football coach at Ike. He currently serves as, director of athletic services for AISD. “I have known Eric for nearly 15 years,” Thompson said. “Eric has always been one of the good guys in our profession. He is truly dedicated to his students. He is one of the guys I see lead-

ing his own team real soon. I have always enjoyed working with Eric and I am happy for him. He is definitely deserving of this award.”

Delgado and Thompson are not the only ones singing Jackson’s praises. The Eisenhower family is also proud.

“Coach Jackson is an outstanding defensive coach, said head coach Kerry Bamburg. “He is well deserving of this award. It’s great to see coaches in Aldine ISD, especially Eisenhower High School get recognition for all the hard work they do.”

“Coach Jackson has had an outstanding year,” said Ben Ibarra, principal at the campus. “The Ike family is thankful for his hard work and dedication. Not only is he a great defensive coach but he also is an outstanding classroom teacher. He truly supports his student-athletes’ academic success.”

The Greater Houston Football Coaches Association will recognize Eric Jackson. He will receive the Assistant Coach of the Year. Jackson serves as assistant defensive football coach at Eisenhower High School.

Often times, the head coach receives much of the credit for his team’s success, but any head coach is only as good as his assistants. Much of an assistant coach’s work is done behind the scenes.

Education is a way to acquire knowledge through a form of instruction. As technology begins to transform the way many of us learn, think, and react, we are finding that the place of learning for our children in many neighborhoods are not only antiquated but obsolete in relation to technology and satisfying the demands of educating our children

and preparing them for the future workforce.

The average building operated in Aldine Independent School District is over 30 years old. Aldine ISD currently has approximately 68,779 students and is rapidly growing. In a recent needs assessment of facilities, $476,385,395 worth of conditions were identified that relate to technology, major systems repairs, aesthetic items, and safety and security upgrades. To keep up with the district growth over the next five years, it will be essential for the district to identify the facility maintenance needs of each school, address challenges, enhance

technology and access to quality key programs for students.

As the district begins the process of assessment, the list of schools and their built date is provided to allow the community to be familiar with the challenges faced by the older buildings infrastructure and resources. The district and JACOBS promotes transparent communication throughout the assessment process over the next few months and encourages feedback from the community.
