Songs That Reflect On Being Black In America

These iconic singers amplified our voices through their

Marvin Gaye “What’s Going On”

Music has always been a sacred outlet of expression for Black Americans. From singers like Nina Simone to Marvin Gaye, music made by Black artists can provide a unique perspective on the meaning of being Black in America. Songs like Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit,” which bemoans racist lynchings in the South, and Lauryn Hill’s “Black Rage,” which captures the many sources of Black frustrations, echo tales of injustice, despondency and rage. In fact, it was Simone who said that “an artist’s duty is to reflect the times.” And she certainly wasn’t alone in her pursuance of that mission. So in honor of the musicians that used their music to amplify the struggles of Black Americans, we’ve compiled a list of songs that sing truth to the Black experience.

efferson Beauregard Sessions III sounds like a character out of a fictional novel about the old South but Jeff Sessions is a real live person, and his appointment as U.S. Attorney General by President Donald Trump and his confirmation by the Senate may signal a return to some of the darkest days of our past.

Much of the media coverage of Sessions’ confirmation centered around partisanship, leaving the impression that objections were just Democrats arguing with Republicans. But as the Senate Republicans rammed through Sessions’ confirmation, it became clear that something darker and more sinister was in play.

It turns out that the first test for the Sessions/Trump Department of Justice (DOJ) could come in Texas.

The state’s Republican Legislature passed the most restrictive voter ID law in the nation in 2011, and it has been ruled by federal courts to illegally discriminate against Hispanic, African American and elderly Texans.

So far, the DOJ has argued in support of the Texans whose rights are being violated.

Watch closely now, however. If Sessions’ DOJ drops out of the Texas lawsuit or switches sides to defend a voting law that has been ruled discriminatory by four separate federal courts, he will have failed the test and signaled that the federal government will no longer defend the Voting Right Acts or our Constitution no matter badly they are violated.

Justice is the last line of defense for civil and human rights protected under the U.S. Constitution and laws passed by Congress. From the Civil Rights Act through the Voting Rights Act to the Shepard/Boyd Hate Crimes Prevention Act, the DOJ has stood as the defender of citizens whose rights are denied.

Nothing in Sessions’ past shows a credible commitment to protecting

citizens’ civil or human rights. Yet, plenty of evidence exists showing Sessions as hostile to fair treatment of minority citizens, equal treatment for women and even the right to citizenship guaranteed under the Constitution. His history reads like a rap sheet of assaults on basic rights under the law: ·A colleague testified under oath that Sessions called a white civil rights lawyer a “disgrace to his race” for siding with minority citizens in voting rights cases. ·In 1986, Sessions was denied appointment as a federal judge after his former colleagues testified that he used the n-word and joked about the Ku Klux Klan. ·As a U.S. Senator, Sessions voted “no” on bills to end employment discrimination and he opposes equal pay legislation for women. ·Even now, Sessions opposes the Constitution’s guarantee of birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. His confirmation wasn’t encouraging. Civility and common decency were tossed aside during a process engineered to hide rather than illuminate Sessions’ ugly record of discrimination and disrespect for civil and human rights.

During the debate, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, dared to read a letter by the late civil rights icon Coretta Scott King that provided relevant detailed information about how Sessions had improperly prosecuted and harassed civil rights workers early in his career. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, used his power to invoke an obscure Senate rule to shut her down.

McConnell silenced a colleague speaking truth to those in power. It was a chilling scene and an ominous reminder that the progress we’ve made in racial equality, fair and equal treatment of women and other human and civil rights are not at all secure.

he much-respected Public Policy Polling group in a recent poll blared the headline “Americans now evenly divided on Impeaching Trump.”

This is no surprise. The presidential election results were barely finalized in November when the furious talk, speculation, and outright calls began for Trump’s impeachment.

Since then, not a moment has passed without an article, a petition, a constitutional or ethics expert, or a Democratic congressperson musing about or demanding impeachment. Trump hasn’t committed any act yet that even remotely rises to the high bar of impeachment offenses. And even if he had, or in the future does, the GOP controlled House and the GOP controlled Senate would have to approve it and then try and convict him. The chances of that happening are slim to none—at this point.

If the point is ever reached where Trump is deemed expendable by the GOP the presidential succession is clear; you get VP Mike Pence. Now some of the more conspiratorial minded think that this was the GOP game plan all along. Elect Trump, let him stumble, and bumble, make a complete buffoon of himself, and then trip over some shady business deal or blatant obstruction of justice or some falsehood that endangers national security, and then he’s toast.

At that point, Pence who knows the legislative process through and through, is tightly connected to the GOP establishment, and is a proven administrator steps in.

The conspiracy angle is a colossal stretch. However, the desirability of Pence running the White House show is not. Pence in fact would be the ultra-conservative’s dream come true. Every major civil

liberties, civil rights, and education, and environmental groups have consistently given him straight Fs on their report cards for elected officials. While every conservative and ultra-conservative group has given him straight As on their legislative report card.

The checklist of Pence positions on the issues reads like a what’s what of the Heritage Foundation and ultra-conservative think tank positions. His anti-position on same sex marriage, public school emphasis, union protections, hate crimes laws, corporate checks, and equitable corporate taxing, separation of church and state are well known and were well-honed during his stint as Indiana governor.

Unlike Trump in the White House, he was able to translate his fixed-instone believes into law and public policy. He did it because he knew how to skillfully work the levels of political power, made no wildly inflammatory statements, and was personally pleasant and affable. In other words, he worked stealthily, quietly, and largely under the media and public radar scope to do his political dirty work. Pence’s crafty, under public view style was on full display when with no fanfare, public statements, or defiant tweets, cast the tie-breaking voted to confirm the atrocious Betty DeVos as Trump’s Education Secretary.

On issues, such as building a border wall, immigrant restrictions, Obamacare, and public education, Pence would not do or say anything inflammatory to stir tens of thousands to immediately sprint to the streets in anger, or have Hollywood celebrities thundering at him from nationally televised film award ceremonies, or have legions of advocacy groups furiously taking out ads and sending out action alerts on something outrageous that came of his mouth.

However, the result would be the same. He’d figure out a way to get the money and the congressional support to build a border barrier.

WE NEED TO GET OUR ACT TOGETHER!

often place emphasis on the fact that there is just something about this Blackness that is seriously misunderstood. There has been a national design set in place since Africans were first brought to America. Once upon a time, there was only one minority race – Black!

Terms such as Hispanic-American, Indian-American and others were non-existent, years ago. Anyone who was not labeled as Black was automatically zoned to the All-White category.

We MUST Understand, that there is nothing new about AfricanAmericans getting the short end of the stick. However, just because things are a certain way, it doesn’t mean that they have to remain that way. While, it is a fact that there still remains a grave indifference in relation to African-Americans and those of other races; We MUST Understand that WE still have the power to control our own destiny.

But first, WE HAVE GOT TO GET OUR ACT TOGETHER! I have made it a point lately, to present several institutions relative to the Black community that are being destroyed at a massive rate. In conjunction with exposing these truths, I also have presented various elements that have led to the destruction of the Black community.

My intent in doing so is primarily for the purposes of reaching the minds of members of our community. It is my earnest desire that our people will wake up and realize that WE MUST get our act together, before it is too late!

It is time out for us accepting the first person that comes along screaming that they are the next leader. We have got to start holding our Black leadership, especially the preachers and politicians accountable. I always highlight these positions, because these are two seats that have the ability and authority to do and make great things happen in and for our community.

It is time that those assets are used

for the people that they claim they represent. In the event that they will not produce, find a replacement!

Overall, in every aspect of the African-American community, I am simply conveying that we need to GET OUR ACT TOGETHER! To the leaders of our communities, schools, judicial system, churches and even within each of our homes’; it is imperative that WE GET OUR ACT TOGETHER! We as a race of people are constantly seeing the loss of our: neighborhoods, churches, schools and yes even our future generation. And when I state that we need to get our act together, I am not just singling out our leaders. We all should have a responsibility in some way, to strive to reach our full potential and encourage those coming behind us to follow those steps. Thus, I am writing to each member that is a part of our community – from the youngest to the oldest. We need to get more involved with our schools and make sure that our children are being educated properly. We need to make sure that they are being educated to be productive citizens, not just getting mis-educated where they can enhance the prison system.

Right here in Acres Homes the War on Drugs was initiated and was eventually destroyed by the leadership. That’s also another problem in our community… Our leadership! Everybody wants to lead, but everybody can’t lead. Nobody wants to follow. Nobody wants to respect, he or she that does best and that is a factor that is crippling us as a people as well.

Continuing, Acres Homes once had a Center for Disease Control, it is now obsolete. We have the Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development,Inc., although it was almost done away with – it is still in effect. At this point, the Chamber is about the only thing consistently going on in the community. Now just because I am

the Chairman, this is not to say that I know everything. But at least I am constantly trying to improve. A lot of people have a problem with the way that I talk. To those people, I say check my track record. It ought to prove a little something.

The way I see it, we as a race have been through enough already with various oppressions and restraints. So, it is beyond me why we would want to burden ourselves with more afflictions? It’s very simple; we just need to get our act together. I would like to share a brief breakdown of the changes that Black folk have gone through since we first came to this country.

From the very beginning, we went from being enslaved slaves to freed slaves. After slavery was said to have been abolished they hit us with the Jim Crow system. Jim Crow laws were put in place to serve as a control mechanism for Blacks.

They were laws that legally enforced discrimination and segregation against Blacks. Once integration surfaced and wiped segregation out, here comes another form of oppression – the ghetto. The ghetto was nothing more than an entrapment to congregate scores of Blacks together in poverty and allow them to self-destruct on their own accord.

This developed through measures of urban riots and other detrimental activities that Blacks would inflict upon one another. Now here we are in 2017 and the oppression rests in the form of mass incarceration. It is an understatement to state that Blacks are overly represented within the prison system of the United States. My point in stating this is to empower our people to see that others have done enough to us as it is. So let’s just wake up and GET OUR ACT TOGETHER! Read More columns online @ AframNews.com!

Flight Museum FROM PAGE 1

HOUSTON - Dr. Mae Jemison once expressed that one should, "Never be limited by other people's limited imaginations." To that regard, if anyone is capable of giving advice in respect to limitations; certainly the first AfricanAmerican female to orbit aboard a space shuttle is deserving of such. Her accomplishment is comparable to a vibrant and courageous young man that AfricanAmerican News&Issues presented to our readers three years ago. We introduced Kenneth Morris who was still in the developmental stages of launching his own organization, Universal Elite Aerospace. Since that time, he has made great strides within the community and has made history at the renowned Lone Star Flight Museum. For, he has become the Museum’s first AfricanAmerican Director of Education.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LONE STAR FLIGHT MUSEUM The Lone Star Flight Museum was birthed out of a private aircraft collection, which was formed in the summer of 1985. Though it started out as an aircraft collection with the addition of more aircraft, the need to secure a larger space soon became a necessity. Accordingly, the construction of a new establishment began in 1990 at Galveston's Scholes Field, with an initial phase covering 50,000 sq. ft. A year later, the second phase was implemented, which was constructed on a 30,000 sq. ft. space on the Field. As time progressed, the Museum attained a wide array of display aviation memorabilia and other pertinent artifacts.

With the incorporation of educational programs and volunteers, the Museum launched its Membership Program which went into effect in 1991.

The Museum made history under the leadership of former Governor George W. Bush. During this era, it was established as the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. To compliment this appointment, Lone Star formulated a capital campaign. Through this measure, the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame Education Center was finalized in the fall of 1999. In this arena of the museum are: “displays presenting each inductee's experiences and contributions to aviation, rotating and permanent educational exhibits designed to increase knowledge, interest and the impact of aviation on today's world.”

The library houses the museum’s widecollection of books, manuscripts, oral histories and original papers of aviators and aviation history. Researches from around the globe rely on the libraries resources.

The Lone Star Flight Museum has been recognized as one of the “top flying museums in the United States”.

The Museum’s website boasts of a few of its main attractions and yearly accomplishments. It states that its,“ flying collection of award-winning aircraft annually logs more than 40,000 cross-country air miles to participate in flying displays and air shows, the P-47 Thunderbolt participates in the United States Air Force "Heritage Flight" program. The "Heritage Flight" unites the classic war birds of yesterday with current inventory jet fighters at aviation events across the country. This unique production takes the living history lesson to the public in the air and is seen by millions of people each year.”

decision was made to move the museum more inland. Hence, Ellington Airport is where the new $38-million project was erected. To add to the already established reputation of the famed museum, it has since incorporated an Education Department, to further compliment its patrons in measures of inspiring the future. Amidst a plethora of innovative facets of the LSFM, one of the newest additions to the facility is Director Kenneth Morris. After extensive screening, interviewing and intake, Morris was chosen as the Director of Education Outreach for the LSFM and S.T.E.M. Learning Center. Thereby, making history within the museum, as being its first

KENNETH MORRIS: HISTORY IN THE MAKING Kenneth Morris was raised and educated in Houston’s, Fifth Ward community as an only child by his mother. After his family relocated to South Park, he completed his final years of schooling at Jesse H. Jones High School, where he earned his high school diploma. Upon graduating, he was not entirely sure of the path that he would take. However, he knew from various elements of his environment, that he did not want to become a victim of it. Therefore, he made preparations to be tested by the United States military. Much to his chagrin, he scored impressively high on his testing.

This feat presented him with six different offers within the military.

In a past interview with Morris, he detailed the turn of events that led him to the journey that he has currently embarked upon. Within the six offers that he was given, he recalled that there was an additional position that was set aside from the rest. He inquisitively inquired and the recruiter replied, “I do not know much about this job, they fly on airplanes, look for submarines, swim

believes that while in the U.S. Navy, he learned a great deal of morals, ethics and responsibility. He also revealed that he learned to be accountable, gained structure in daily living, built his confidence level and grew into a responsible man.

Furthermore, while in the U.S. Navy he was privileged to travel to more than 30 different countries and international cities. This proved to be an asset which allowed him the exposure to interact and experience the lifestyles of numerous cultures. During his tenure in the U.S. Navy he was promoted the first time,

every time and made the rank of E-5 in 3 years.

In past, he was the recipient of a number of medals and honors including: NATO Medalist, Good Conduct Medalist, Kosovo Air Campaign Medalist, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medalist, Sea Service Deployment, an award as U.S. Navy Air Crewman, Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (Navy), Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom Veteran and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medalist, just to list a few.

Last September, he went on a crime spree across Texas, killing two people and kidnapping another. One of his innocent victims was Welton Betts. Welton loved God, his family and the Dallas Cowboys. After leaving a Cowboys game last year, he stopped at a Texaco station in Cedar Hill where he was gunned down by Juan Rios. Mr. Betts’ death is a tragedy.

Chairman Candidates Offer Broad Choices and Visions for a Blue Future

- Dwight D. Eisenhower HOUSTON - Tremors and aftershock fallout continue as some Harris Democrats are clamoring for unity, inclusion and historic changes in leadership in the party starting at the top.

The leadership and future of Harris County Democrats is at the center of great debate and hangs in the balance as several candidates square off to replace resigning Democratic Party Chairman Lane Lewis.

It is one great power vacuum in the party and Progressive Democrats believe now is the time to reinvent the party on a statewide and national level after President Donald Trump’s election.

However, the old guard elements want to play politics with the party and keep things “business as usual”.

Candidates Vow to Lead The hotly contested battle for the heart of the party is being fought publicly by a group of dedicated individual candidates with a multitude of visions, ideas, goals and dreams for where they want to take the party and what it takes to keep its political dominance in the county as it looks toward the 2018 elections.

In a political forum, held by AfricanAmerican News & Issues at the Acres Home Chamber, candidates Keryl L. Douglas, Eartha Jean Johnson, Rob Collier and Johnathan F. Miller shared how they plan to change the party and keep Harris County Blue. Not attending the forum was Candidates Lillie Schechter and Chris Spellmon.

All candidates seem to indicate the Democratic voting politic want a real voice and

do not want policy and party direction to be dictated to by elected officials or giant political donors.

They are calling for real change and the kind of unity that can only be obtained when the grassroots voters voice matters and the face of the party includes real people from working blue collar class and the community, not just “bosses” or “union” influences.

Last November, Democrats literally swept Harris County, winning key offices including the offices of District Attorney, Sheriff, Tax Assessor and numerous other Judge positions.

Democrats rolled to the polls in numbers that stunned Republicans who saw the wands of power removed from their hands after years of political dominance in the county.

Harris County has about 2.1 million registered voters in the county. Of those, 61.25-percent of about 1.3 million turned out at the polls in 2016.

Of those voters, 53.2-percent or about 471,296 voters were cast for Democrats and only 45.29-percent or about 401,255 were cast for Republicans.

Keeping that momentum going is what concerns candidates and each laid out plans on how to keep the Big Blue winning streak going.

AUSTIN - After Governor Greg Abbott delivered his State of the State address, it did not take long for him to fire a strong message across the bow of those who harbor in or have set sail for sanctuary cities in Texas.

Abbott has decided to withhold $1.5 million from Travis County’s law enforcement in an effort to penalize Austin’s “sanctuary city” status – and this appears to only be the beginning.

According to the governor, it is our burden as a state government to deal with the consequences of the federal government not securing the border.

Whitmire’s SB 884 Seeks to Ensure Taxpayers Have Voice on Spending

AUSTIN - Houston is a diverse city, but nothing is more divisive than the priorities of wants and needs of leaders versus the community.

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and county commissioners are hell-bent on saving the Astrodome starting with at $105 million-plus redevelopment project, while Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has made it clear that Houstonians and Harris County needs to spend millions to solve its flooding problems, deal with homelessness issue and ensure all communities are provided equitable and affordable housing, modern schools, access to services, shopping and grocery stores and solid job and employment bases in surrounding disadvantaged neighborhoods.

It’s about setting proper priorities.

WHO SHOULD HAVE THE GREATEST SAY IN HOW TAX DOLLARS ARE SPENT IN THE CITY AND HARRIS COUNTY? Democratic State Sen. John Whitmire, a group of state senators from the Bayou City, and supported by Republican Lt. Gov Dan Patrick say the people should.

The group is united that the people’s voice is important and needs comes first and have filed Senate Bill 884 to pump the brakes on spending millions of tax dollars to foot the bill to fix, repair or preserve sports venues like the Astrodome.

SENATE BILL 884 SB 884, known as the “Harris County Taxpayer Protection Act,” applies to a county with a populations of 3.3 million or more.

Galilee Family, Community Celebrate Pastor, First Lady’s 29 Years of Service and the Power of God in Acres Homes

Rev. Dr. Edwin Allen Davis & Anthony Stewart of AHCBED “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time” - I Peter 5:6 NKJV HOUSTON - The Black Church has historically been a source of hope and strength for the African American community.

Since 1913, the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church has been and is a strong rock and a moral staple in Acres Homes community and has helped shaped Black History in the neighborhood and the lives of generations of Black youth.

From its efforts have come many solid and productive citizens making positive contributions here and in other communities in Houston, around Texas and other parts of this country and the world.

Galilee Missionary Baptist Church was organized by the late Rev. D. Hartman with only a few members present. It has served as one of the strong religious pillars of Acres Homes.

Since its founding and now under the present leadership of Rev. Dr. Edwin A. Davis and First Lady Dr. Charlotte J. Davis, the Galilee MBC has grown to over 2500 members and many continue TX-8

to be added to the church family.

By Galilee MBC in Acres Homes were remembered, recognized and noted by business and community leaders, elected officials, colleagues, fellow pastors and long-time friends in a special 29th Pastoral Anniversary Banquet honoring Rev. Dr. Edwin A. Davis and First Lady Dr. Charlotte J. Davis for their service to Galilee MBC and the community.

The event took place at the Doubletree Houston Intercontinental Airport by Hilton BLACK CHURCH ORIGINS According to an article in the African American Registry on “The Black Church: A Brief History”, The Black Church was organized politically and spiritually, and not only given to the teachings of Christianity but also were faithfully relied upon to address the specific issues which affected their members.

For many African-American Christians, regardless of their denominational differences, Black Churches have always represented their religion, community, and

home. Scholars have repeatedly asserted that Black history and Black church history overlap enough to be virtually identical.

One of the First known Black churches in America was created before the American Revolution, around 1758. Called the African Baptist or "Bluestone" Church, this house of worship was founded on the William Byrd Plantation near the Bluestone River, in Mecklenburg, Virginia.

Africans at the time believed that only adult baptism by total immersion was doctrinally correct.

The First African Baptist Church of Savannah, Georgia which began in 1777. This is said to be the oldest Black church in North America. Originally called the First Colored Church the pastoral life of George Leile’s preaching is tied to its beginning.

In 1787, Blacks in Philadelphia organized the Free African Society, the first organized Afro-American society, and Absalom Jones and Richard Allen were elected as overseers. They established contact and created relationships with similar Black groups in other cities.

EVENT DETAILS The banquet featured Ronald Green as Master of the Hour and music by the George Washington Carver High School Orchestra, a saxophone duet by father and son, Gregory “Saxman Daniels Sr. and Gregory “Lil” Saxman Daniels II and special appearances and statements by District 18 Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee; Hon. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner; Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen; Yale Street Baptist Church Pastor T. Leon Preston II; and African American News & Issues Publisher Roy Douglas Malonson.

The event was highlighted also by the Parade of Hats and a fashion

show hosted by CLW & Forty Plus Models Inc. The theme of this year’s celebration was “An Humble Servant Enhancing Spiritual Growth”.

Mayor Turner called the Davis’s a strong team and role models for Houston, the church and Acres Homes community.

He said to see both of them in action is to understand the real meaning of service, dedication and commitment.

“We are better for their leadership,” he said. “They are not only

but will result in progress and prosperity for the best in Acres Homes and other disadvantaged areas of the city without pushing people out, he said.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee saluted Pastor Davis and First Lady Davis for the dedicated and tireless work both have done for the community and for demonstrating what it means to be driven by God’s principles.

He also stressed that dreams do come true and that whatever one perceives he or she can achieve, especially when God, love and unity are part of the equation. He also called for unity and cooperation between church and community as he works on the vision for a better Houston communities.

The transformation of neighborhoods will not happen overnight,

She praised First Lady Davis, especially for her inspiring work with youth in the Aldine School District as counselor, encourager and a nurturer.

HOUSTON - “I was that little kid who always loved to draw and just really never grew up,” expressed Reginald Adams. Over the past 20 years of being in Houston, most of Adam’s creative work has been around public art murals, sculptures, and art installations. He has facilitated the design, coordination and production of over 200 public art projects and sacred spaces across the Houston area and abroad. The different projects have been co-created with the involvement of over 30,000 area youth volunteers, 100’s of artist and thousands of community stakeholders. His work is unique because of his desire in engaging the public in the creation of these projects.

“My inspiration comes from people and the location of the work itself.” As a young child, Adams traveled a lot with his family, which exposed him to culture diversity at a very young age. He remembered being around a lot of different kind of people ethnically, socially, economically and graphically. “I could appreciate from a young age culture diversity, and as I got older and realized how my art could be influenced by cultures different than my own, I actually began studying and pursing experiences that will allow me to broaden my perspective around culture.”

Adams has had the opportunity to travel to thirty different countries studying public art, and with each trip, it inspired his work in a way that he could bring back a piece of that culture and incorporate it into the work that he does in Houston.

With twenty years under his belt with engaging the public in the creation of public art, it was no surprise that Adams was asked by the Super Bowl committee to design four murals in four different communities; Cuney Homes Apartments, The Breakfast Klub, Capitol Tower, and The Beulah Shepard Library.

When Council member Amanda Edwards

shared her vision for the project, Adams was ecstatic because she wanted the community to be involved with each of the murals, and part of the reason why he loves what he does is because he loves working with different people. “It wasn’t about painting murals about football…or the Super Bowl…it was really about giving the community a voice.” Adams defines art as anything you can get away with. “I don’t think you can put art in a box. I think art is any type of creative expression,” expressed Adams.

So why were the murals created? Adams quoted Mayor Turner stating, “All of Houston should benefit from the Super Bowl,” which is one of the main reasons for the creation of the projects. “When you think about the Super Bowl, you think about the NRG Stadium, the bars, the restaurants, the hotels, and all of the social entertainment places that people will venture into as they come to Houston…because of the size of Houston, some of the communities will not benefit from it...they don’t get the same kind of love and attention.” Adams expressed further how the city of Houston is putting its best face on for these guests that are coming in town. The connection was to make sure that we were not only putting our face on for the tourist attracts of Houston, but also for the community organizations and spaces that will like to benefit from the Super Bowl taking place in the city.

Each mural is uniquely different in its character and theme, and the people who helped design and paint it. However, each mural has a theme of empowerment, which is being the best you can be in your own different way.

The mural at the Cuney Homes is titled “I am Empowerment”, and the kids of the community were able to brainstorm around the prompt, “What does it mean to be empowered, and what is empowerment?”

Epsilon Omicron Education Foundation & Mothers Abandoned or Widowed

Founders Sylvia & Calvin Reynolds HOUSTON - Luke 12:48 states, “…to whom much is given, much is required.” A husband and wife team has taken on the great task of helping others. The task has not been an easy one for Calvin Reynolds, president of both organizations, and his wife Sylvia Reynolds, but the reward from their hard work has been worthwhile. “The thrust for these organizations came from just a vision for God. This is not what we intended to do when we retired…we were lead to do something…and to be engaged in an area where there is such a great need, is such a rewarding opportunity,” expressed Calvin Reynolds.

Epsilon Omicron Education Foundation is a new organization that is trying to educate different communities about the issues that face African Americans. It was created “to provide a platform for established, prominent African American leaders to share their views and place a spotlight on current-day issues within the black community and to provide a charitable, educational and public service that supports the goals and aims of the members of the Epsilon Omicron Member Boulé of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.”

In addition, they want to help young African American males at the junior high and high school level that are involved in a sport. They want to help them succeed and to continue on into college. They are targeting individuals who wouldn’t get any recognition from Division One colleges because they either didn’t have the right grades, or the right mentors, or the people they associate with aren’t helping them reach their highest potential. The organizations biggest initiative now is to pay for their SAT training so they can improve academically. This organization strongly believes in education, and wants to help young African American males be the best they can be no matter what they have been

through or where they have come from.

Mothers Abandoned or Windowed (MAW) is an organization that has been around for six years. MAW assists mothers who have been abandoned by their husbands, or whose husbands have died prematurely. They also consider an area of abandonment if their husbands were incarcerated, and they left their families in a bad situation. If a mother is in one of these situations, it may be hard for them financially, and even emotionally. This organization helps those mothers in three different ways such as transportation to help get them to and from work, daycare assistance if needed, and to help them continue their education. Their vision is “to have communities where abandoned or widowed mothers can live with dignity and respect through turbulent times.”

Mothers who are in need can fill out an application and apply, and once they have been approved, the organization contacts them to see what their greatest need is. The organization has helped 65 moms thus far, and in the past year, they were able to give away 4 cars. Their goal this year is to purchase 5 to 10 cars. After the women are done with the program, Sylvia, who is the membership director, stays in contact with the women just to make sure that they are doing okay. She expressed, “I keep in touch with them and just touch base with them to see how they are doing. It’s not an okay I’ll help you and then I’ll drop you. We follow up and check in with them.”

One mother who they have helped was in a domestic violence situation, and the organization helped her come out of the bad situation.

-George Addair TOMBALL - Many people all over the world celebrate Black History Month each year. However, Tomball ISD has not ever, but they will now host their first Black Heritage Program in the history of Tomball ISD. Alanna Gaskin, a senior at Tomball Memorial High School is coordinating the program, and has faced many challenges in the process. Her mother, Lakeithia Walker is very proud of her, but had her concerns as well.

She expressed, “Initially, I was hesitant because I knew the obstacles that she would face and as a mother you want to shield your child from the harshness of the world. However, I knew that this would be a great step, no matter how small; any step forward is progress so I encourage and support her on every level.”

According to Tomball ISD’s website, the district has 12,444 students. Out of those students 585 (4.70%) are African American, 3,631 (29.20%) are Hispanic, 42 (0.30%) are American Indian, 678 (5.40%) are Asian, 8 (0.10%) are Pacific Islander, 369 (3.00%) are two or more races, and 7,131 (57.30%) are White.

“What inspired me to put on the a Black Heritage Program was because I wanted to showcase a part of history that isn’t taught in my district. I wanted to create awareness of the struggles and obstacles African Americans face and also the success we have had,” expressed Gaskin.

In a predominantly White district,

a Black History Program may not be on the list of “things to do”, but when you do have students who are a part of that culture, why wouldn’t you want to acknowledge it? Gaskin expressed that the reasons for not having a program sooner is possibly due to Black students being afraid of speaking up in fear of being shut down, and because the district is “very conservative and culturally oblivious.”

After being silent for so long, Gaskin felt that it was time to speak up. “This year after complaining about how African Americans do not receive the adequate amount of recognition in my school, I decided to voice my thoughts and ask for a Black History Program.”

Gaskin has faced many challenges while trying to put on this program. These issues include; negativity from school administration, teachers and students, teachers speaking down on Black History Month and not giving the amount of attention to Black History, students snatching posters and flyers down around the school, and some stating that Black History Month is “stupid.” In addition, her mother stated, “ She has faced each obstacle with much prayer, grace and determination.

Though, at times she has been so overwhelmed, to the point of tears of anger and frustration, we pray and I remind her to remain focused on her original purpose of the program; the educating and growth of her school and surrounding community.”

Gaskin and other students who support the program continue to hang posters, and work even harder to make sure their program is a huge success.

The purpose of the program is to educate, and Gaskin wants people to open their minds, learn something new, and embrace the history that has contributed a lot to the society we live in. “Every race and creed is an integral part of the rich history of our country and the community of Tomball Memorial High School. A Black History program can help encourage a tradition of acknowledgment, inclusion, and community engagement.”

It is Gaskin’s hope that even after she graduates, teachers and students will continue to have a yearly celebration. This program will be held on February 23rd at 6:30 pm at Tomball Memorial High School. Come out and support the history that will be made on that day.

A Life Worth Knowing: Jayne Kennedy

By Tania Linscomb Jayne Kennedy was the face of successful African American femininity in the 1980’s.

That felinity and her desire for fame helped her break through barriers as an actress, model, and sports castor. She paved the way for women of color to play leading roles and be cast in a variety of roles. Jayne Kennedy was born in Washington D.C. on October 27, 1951. Her family later moved to Ohio where she attended Wickliffe High School in Wickliffe, Ohio. She was tall, slender and a notable beauty. As a teen, she was entered into the Miss USA pageant. At that time, the late 1960’s it was very rare to see an African American woman participate in pageants. In 1970, she won the Miss Ohio title and was the first African American woman to hold the crown. As she blossomed into a young woman, she met the love of her life, Leon Isaac Kennedy. The couple moved to California in order to make their dreams become a reality. While there, she appeared on multiple TV shows and had even bigger hopes of getting movie roles. That would become a reality for the future star, but she also enjoyed a lot of variety in her career. Kennedy was one of the first women to be featured on the NFL channel and in the early 1980s. Although she was one of the leading fitness personalities during that time, producing exercise videos called ‘’Love Your Body,’’ as well as appear on various TV shows such as the Six Million Dollar Man, Iron Side and Sanford and Son, it was her time in the sports industry that proved to be the role that had the biggest impact on society and women’s rights. She paved the way for other women to break through male dominated careers to prove that women cannot be lumped together and that gender does not dictate sports aptitude.

She was the host of America’s longest running syndicated sports show, Greatest Sports Legends.

A Life Worth Knowing Series: Merze Tate

by xxxxxx In the wake of Hollywood’s release of Hidden Figures, a film that highlights the extraordinary, but widely unknown feats of three African American women and their accomplishments in the field of mathematics and space exploration, we celebrate other heroes. For the month of February, the Eagle’s Nest will showcase the talents of lesser known, but greatly accomplished icons in Black History. This month we celebrate Merze Tate.

Born February 6, 1905 in Blanchard, Michigan, Tate worked as a domestic to earn money to attend school and satisfy her thirst for world travel. She received her first notable accolade within one year, winning the Hinnman Oratorical Contest for a speech she wrote about African American soldiers and their involvement but lack of recognition in World War I. She later went on to graduate from Kalamazoo Western State Normal School, being the first African American woman to graduate from that institution. She was first in her class and earned a Bachelors of Arts degree. The year was 1927.

Only just beginning to satisfy her love in learning, Tate went on to teach at the Crispus Attucks School for a brief period since Blacks were barred from teaching at the high school level at that time.

Soon after, she returned to enroll in Western and became the first African American woman to earn her teaching credentials to teach at the high school level.
