AUSTIN- Greater East Austin Youth Association celebrated Juneteenth with pageantry and a community program at the Doris Miller Auditorium. The program was followed up with a 2K Freedom Run and a community parade and park festival. This year the celebration focused on the theme of “Realizing Our Opportunities To Succeed” (R.O.O.T.S).

“This is about realizing what our ancestors did,” said Chairperson Tami D. Johnson. “It also calls on us to look at what we need to do.”The event is marked by food and drinks that include pork ribs and red pop and other traditions to help bring together the idea of thanksgiving, freedom and remembering the blood shed and sacrifices made by ancestors on the road to freedom. She said the Austin celebration brings 8,000 to 10,000 people to support the events and proceeds from the celebration goes to help the youth association and the remaining half goes to plan and prepare for next year’s event.

American News&Issues AUSTIN- The Austin Fire Department (AFD) went door-to-door on Saturday, June 7 to install smoke alarms into residences in the Buena Vista neighborhood. Buena Vista is in the Pleasant Valley area, bordered by Robert Martinez Jr – East Cesar Chavez – Linden Street – East Fifth Street.

According to Michelle Tanzola, AFD Public Information, firefighters visited 80 homes and installed a total of 182 smoke alarms. She said some homes received more than one alarm because national standard dictate one working smoke alarm outside each bedroom.

DALLAS- More than 40,000 people have traveled to the city for the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education. Church leaders from all 50 states, the Caribbean islands, Germany and Africa gathered for one of the largest AfricanAmerican meetings this year. During the event, members could attend 300 morning classes dealing with topics such as Christian doctrine and how to be an effective deacon. There were also youth and children rallies and lectures from leaders addressing issues facing church members.

Waddles said the convention aims to teach church leaders and members how to “be more faithful to the call of Christ,” and how to build a family and community on a foundation of faith.

FORT HOOD- Fort Hood officials have released the name of a Soldier who died June 13 from an apparent gunshot wound in Killeen, Texas. Sgt. Sergei Joseph Hearst, 26, whose home of record is listed as Sioux Falls, S.D., entered active-duty service in June 2007 as an infantryman. Hearst’s awards and decorations include two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon to name a few.

HOUSTONRecently, Sheriff Adrian Garcia and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office took to the streets to do some old-fashion crime fighting and to educate residents about the seriousness of human trafficking. The purpose of this event was to send a message that law enforcement agencies alone cannot bring an end to human trafficking without the public’s assistance.

“There’s only so much that can be done from behind a podium or around a conference table. We put boots on the ground to walk the walk, not just talk the talk,” Sheriff Garcia said. “The hundreds of volunteers that walked with me to educate the community epitomized what it means to look after our neighbors and prevent crime.”

In 1875, the land in Houston, Texas, in White Oak Bayou where First and Sixth wards meet includes more than 700 family plots.

Many prominent African Americans, slaves, and veterans are buried within this historic, 6-acre resting home.

Olivewood Cemetery was incorporated in 1875 ten years after emancipation arrived for Texas slaves, and is built on land that was a burial ground for slaves.

There have been various hearsays of mysterious after dark sightings and bizarre movements within the cemetery.

www.aframnews.com SAN ANTONIO- A Guadalupe County grand jury has indicted a San Antonio church leader on a charge of prohibited sexual conduct. Rodney Lee Carter, 40, of Seguin, was arrested in January and indicted June 5, according to the Guadalupe County district attorney’s office. Carter is accused of having sex with a female family member last year in Seguin and other locations in Guadalupe County, said Dep. Franklin Thomas of the Seguin Police Department. Palestine Missionary Baptist Church in the 900 block of North Elmendorf Street still lists a Rev. Rodney L. Carter as the pastor. Carter was released from the Guadalupe County Jail in January after posting a $75,000 bond.

Why 2014 Should Be Another Freedom Summer Rev. Al Sharpton President, National Action Network

During this very week 50 years ago, Americans -- many of them students and young folks -- gathered in the state of Mississippi alongside civil rights leaders, activists, local citizens and others as they collectively engaged in an extensive voter registration project. Freedom Summer, as it was aptly titled, helped change the course of this nation. Because of Mississippi’s horrendously low Black voter registration rate, this state became symbolic of the larger systemic issue of voter disenfranchisement across the country. Today, 50 years on from that historic summer, we are facing many of the same challenges in a host of states. After so many marched, organized, petitioned, registered voters, and risked their lives and livelihoods -- and some even died -- how do we as a country allow their victories to be stripped away before our very eyes? If there was ever a time to have a renewed Freedom Summer, that time is now, in 2014.

In all my years of civil rights work, I never thought I’d see the day that the Voting Rights Act would be effectively gutted and transformed.

Last year the Supreme Court did just that when it declared Section 5 of the Act (which requires areas with a history of discrimination to receive federal approval before making voting changes) unconstitutional. States have effectively been able to institute new requirements and make new regulations without federal approval -- and you’d better believe they have been busy doing so. While there has been pushback against this and other measures to block voters from the polls, at least 19 states have enacted harsh voting requirements like new ID laws. Making it more difficult for Blacks, the poor, the elderly and other minorities to participate, these

laws have caused us to regress as a society and forget about the goals of that Freedom Summer 50 years past.

It is up to us to put an end to these draconian measures. We must urge Congress to pass the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 and restore protections for our right to vote.

When heroic Americans like Bob Moses, Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, and many others sacrificed so greatly during Freedom Summer, we must ensure that their work lives on. We must conduct similar voter registration drives, especially in the 19 or so states that have instituted harsh new voting laws. If we fail to challenge these injustices today, we will do a disservice to all those who fought and died before us. I often say that we have a lot to celebrate, and we have undoubtedly made tremendous gains, but much work remains. It’s time to stop living in denial and look beyond our own individual interests. The fate of our very democracy is at stake.

As we mark the half-century since Freedom Summer, we have a tendency to rejoice prematurely. We have gone from people being murdered over voting rights to watching the first Black president and attorney general in office. That is an undeniable achievement. But before we pop the cork off champagne bottles and celebrate, we have some unfinished business. In many of the areas that made up the Confederacy some 150 years ago, we now see right-wing Republican legislatures that are attacking everything from voting rights to same-sex marriage and a woman’s right to choose. We are witnessing outright resistance against civil rights gains like affirmative action. And in states with new voter ID laws, we’re seeing a concerted effort to limit if not suppress the minority vote.

It is my firm belief that we ought to acknowledge and appreciate how far we’ve come, but only as we continue to push for change in the clear areas where we have remaining challenges.

Freedom Fighter “Agitation” is Good for America

W

hat would America be like without “agitators” or

“outsiders”?

They have played a vital and significant role in influencing changes in public policy and shaping the political fabric and atmosphere in these United States.

Something that caught my attention recently was the statements of Jasper Police Chief Robert MacDonald attacking “Black” freedom fighters, activists and “outsiders” coming to his town.

MacDonald said he does not like the “outsiders” stirring up what he called “hatred and bigotry” in his town. He also called out one Beaumont activist and challenged him to decide whether he would be part of the Jasper team solution or remain one of the agitating “outsiders” who perpetuate the problem.

First, We MUST Understand the definition of agitator.

Agitator -An agitator is a person who stirs up others in order to upset the status quo and further a political, social, or other cause.

The attack on Ricky Jason is a clear indication that the historic vestiges of racism are still alive and well in the heart of MacDonald and many southern “sympathizers” like him living in Texas.

The history of America is rich with “agitators” and “outsiders” who stirred people and motivated them to action resulting in change.

From Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry and Thomas Paine to Frederick Douglass, Stokely Carmichael, Adam Clayton Powell Jr and Martin Luther King Jr, each played a vital role in helping to shape Democratic policy in America.

“Outsiders” Adams, Henry and Paine’s writings helped start a revolution against King George

and the British government that resulted in independence and the birth of a nation.

During slavery, Frederick Douglass “agitated” slave owners and congressmen in the South with his appearances, writings and fiery speeches calling for the abolition of slavery and recognition of Blacks as humans and free citizens.

He was not even considered a “man” by southern standard, but was labeled a “meddling outsider”, but Douglass words, common sense and wisdom was acknowledged and respected by the leader of the free world – President Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln counseled with Douglas on several occasions, despite those who called Douglas a “Negro” “outsider” and “agitator”.

Stokely Carmichael rose to prominence in the civil rights and Black Power movements, first as a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and later as the Honorary Prime Minister of the Black Panther Party.

He participated in the Freedom Rides of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) to desegregate the restaurants along U.S. Route 40 between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. and was frequently arrested, spending time in jail. In 1961, he served 49 days with other activists at the infamous Parchman Farm in Sunflower County, Mississippi.

He was arrested many times for his “agitator-outsider” activism.

However, the results of his and other agitators were the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was a clergyman and U.S. representative who was a major force in establishing civil rights for African Americans. Powell

was elected to the House of Representatives in the mid-1940s and became a champion civil rights reformer, also making great strides in education and labor. He faced controversy for being an “agitator” for some of his actions and words. His role as an freedom fighting “outsider” among White Americans at a critical time in history helped bring about attention and changes needed to turn the tide on Jim Crow racism and segregation in this country.

Chief MacDonald is like so many other “old head” racist thinkers in America today who don’t want Blacks enlightened or awakened about their condition and understand those responsible for their plight and oppression.

Their attitudes are simply, “stay out of my small town and quit educating and agitating my “good n*gg$!s”.”

Chief MacDonald and those like him are wrong and think like dinosaurs.

Modern Freedom Fighters like Ricky Jason, Lee Alcorn, Kofi Taharka, Krystal Muhammad, Robert Muhammad, Dr. James M. Douglas, Deric Muhammad, Pastor F.N. Williams, Bishop James Dixon, Rev. Kyev Tatum and many others not only deserve our respect, but also our support and deepest appreciation for their efforts to be the “outsiders” who stir things up, agitate and let the racists in America know that we will not bow and never will break.

We MUST Understand that “Agitation” and “Outsider” influences are good for Democracy. It keeps the status quo honest and ensures that the rights of the weak and powerless among us will not be trampled upon.

That premise has been tested and has proven viable looking at a successful Black Think Tank in San Francisco, California.

The Black Think Tank was founded there on January 21, 1979, by individuals who had been at the center of the late 1960s birth and battle for Black studies.

Co-founded by Drs. Nathan and Julia Hare in 1979 to promote a movement for better Black male/ female relationships, but quickly took on other matters including issues of the miseducation of the Black child, spearheading a rites of passage movement for Black boys, overhauling the public schools, and educating every Black man, woman and child properly.

The Black Think Tank pioneered a Black Male/Female Relationships movement, including “Black love” (Kupenda groups, Kupenda being Swahili for ‘to love’) designed to help our people learn to love again, to feel loved, to love ourselves and, therefore, one another, inasmuch as we already know how to hate one another.

It then issued “The Call” and was the catalyst for the contemporary Rites of Passage movement for African-American boys in the popular manual, “Bringing the Black Boys to Manhood: The Passage”, which promulgated lectures and workshops nationally and internationally.

His wisdom has come at a price and must never be taken for granted and it is his desire to share and transfer this wisdom to the next generation in a way to ensure its survival and its success.

He is joyfully married to the former Lillian Walker, with whom he shared the joys of parenting their now-grown children; they are also proud grandparents. Dr. and Mrs. Wood live in Houston, Texas.

and dream for the future of Black America. Some of those include SoulScope and Free The Dream.

SoulScope has partnered with LifeWorx Associates, specialists in measuring and teaching the Enneagram types, to bring this track record of spiritual guidance and group development to improve team and community development.

The effort has helped groups in business, non-profit organizations, community leadership development, in health care systems and education.

Wood defines success going back to the early days of the movement and called on the Black community to return to the fundamentals.

No team can be a winning team without practicing the fundamentals, working as a team and committing those basic principle to heart and putting them to work for all the people.

“This includes getting all its anchor institutions on the same page, and work through whatever it takes for them to achieve together, that TOTAL COMMUNITY SUCCESS,” he said. “This is the lesson Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King left us as their living legacy.”

Wood hopes to re-instill the vision of the dream in the hearts of business and community leaders at the luncheon.

“The big question is what now happens to their (Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr’s ) dream?” he said. “How and why we, their survivors, can and must FREE THE DREAM. That will be the focus of my talk.”

Healing, Direction & Support for Victims of Police Brutality & Injustices

HOUSTON-It was the early morning hours of New Years Day in 2009 when Oscar Grant III was fatally shot down in cold blood by BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California.

The moment is frozen in time for Cephus “Uncle Bobby” Johnson, the uncle of Oscar Grant. It was a moment that changed his life and started a mission to rip off the veil and tell the world the truth about police brutality and injustices happening to young Black males at the hands of police and security forces.

The film “Fruitvale Station” draws attention to that pressing problem in America that points to and involves police brutality, injustice and racial inequalities.

The film came to Acres Home for a public community showing sponsored by Krystal Muhammad, Chair for the New Black Panther Party and Sonia Parker, founder of Parents Against Predators.

Parents Against Predators (PAP) was founded in 2009 under the direction of Sgt. Michael and Sonia Parker, a husband and wife veteran team based in Houston. The 501(c) Non-Profit Organization charitable organization that unites

parents, schools, community, and churches together to reach our children with vital messages that will empower them to tell if anyone harm them in anyway.

In the early hours of Jan. 1, 2009, Oscar Grant III, unarmed and lying face down on a subway platform in Oakland, Calif., was shot in the back by a White Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer. The incident, captured on video by onlookers, incited protest, unrest and arguments similar to those that would swirl around the killing of Trayvon Martin in Florida a few years later.

The film reconstructs the last 24 or so hours of Oscar Grant’s life, flashing back from a horrifying snippet of actual cellphone video of the hectic moments before the shooting by the BART officer.

Directed by 26-year-old Ryan Coogler, depicts the final day leading up to the murder of Grant III by BART police officer Mehserle in Oakland, California. Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to two years in prison and ended up only serving a portion of the

short sentence, which sparked outrage and riots across the Bay Area. For Freedom Fighters, the Oscar Grant family represents more than a movie. It was a serious wake up call on the status of young Black men in America and demonstrates the reality of what many Black and Brown Americans are dealing with everyday on streets in our major cities.

The panel was headed up by “Uncle Bobby” Johnson, Muhammad, Parker, Kofi Taharka, leader of the National Black United Front, Houston, Robbie Tolan and others.

Johnson made his appearance in Houston to support efforts to shed light on the police brutality issue and support Robert Bobby Tolan, who was shot and nearly killed by a Bellaire Police Officer in 2009 and other families going through the loss of a loved one at the hands of police brutality.

The San Diego native and son of 14-year Major League Veteran Bobby Tolan, was a baseball standout at Bellaire High School in Houston, TX. After graduating from Bellaire in 2003, Robbie attended Prairie View A&M University, where he helped lead the Panthers to their

second consecutive conference title in 2007. Following the Panthers’ championship season, Robbie signed to play with the Washington Nationals, with dreams of following in his father’s footsteps. During Robbie’s brief stint with the Nationals, he was promoted through the minor leagues twice in three months due to his work ethic and maturity, before being released in 2008.

An errant mistake by a Bellaire Police officer alleged that Robbie stole a car that was his own, and parked it in the driveway in front of his parents’ home. Robbie and his cousin were forced by officers to lie faced down on the ground at gunpoint.

During the confrontation, Robbie’s mother was thrown into the family’s own garage door; and when Tolan protested the mistreatment of his mother, he was shot in the chest by an officer. The bullet traveled through Robbie’s lung, and punctured his liver, where it still remains today.

Johnson is active from New York to California and is working with Tolan and other families nationwide including the family of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, who were killed as a result of senseless violence that was covered over by a court system that failed to protect Black youth from violent hate mongering “race” predators.

“Uncle Bobby” shared his motivation for being involved after Oscar was shot dead stating that it helped him find purpose over allowing himself to be consumed by the anger over his death.

“We embrace and support Robbie Tolan and other families because we know the pain and anger that lingers after brutality and injustice,” he said. “God let

me know that the best way for me was to reach out to others the way the community and families reached out to us and embraced us during that critical time of loss in our lives.”

According to Johnson, cases like Grants, Adolph Grimes III of New Orleans, La., Travon Martin and Jordan Davis of Florida and the many other recent cases in Hearne Texas, Dallas, Texas, Houston, Austin and other Texas cities where the police departments have stereotyped young and old Black people demonstrate the lack of respect for Black life.

He said his experience empowered him to stand up and speak out about the injustices and that is how he got started and has not looked back.

“It let me know how important it is to stand up and also how I can be a ray of hope to others,” he said. “This movie and sessions are training grounds of hope for those suffering. It tells everyone who sees it that you can do it, it is the right thing to do. You can fight it and you can get justice.”

He added that no one should walk around carrying frustration and pain of the loss because help is a phone call, an e-mail or personal contact away.

“It is my hope that we in the Black community understand that what affects one truly affects us all,” he said. “We are here to uplift and encourage our community first to have hope and not to give up and to learn to have the courage to stand up and fight for that loved one silenced by the genocidal brutality and racism that has been unleashed on Black America.”

PASTOR ev. O.B. Winkley is the son of the late Rev. Otis Winkley, Sr. and Myra Winkley Thomas. He is married to the former Janet (Lee) Miles of Waco, Texas, and together they have three adult children and three grandchildren.

Rev. Winkley attended the Kilgore Public Schools and Bishop College in Dallas, Texas. He received his Bachelor and Master of Theology degrees from the American International Bible Seminary in Killeen, Texas.

The Atlanta, Texas native accepted his call to the ministry in 1976 at the age of 21. Six months later, he accepted the pastorship at New Home Baptist Church in Overton, Texas. Over the past 29 years, he has pastored four other churches. To this congregation’s delight, Rev. Winkley accepted the call as Pastor of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in August, 2005. We are inspired by his in-depth preaching and teaching of the Word and his humorous parables.

Pastor Winkley is considered a noted gospel preacher, teacher and pastor, whose reputation as a leader in his church and personal life is second to none. Pastor Winkley has held many board and advisory committee positions. He has also worked diligently with the NAACP and the Boy Scouts of America.

Pastor Otis Winkley’s primary goals in life are to win souls for Jesus Christ and to teach the Body of Christ through discipleship training. He aspires to the best husband, father and pastor God would have him be. Pastor Winkley believes that in doing these few things well, not only will he be blessed, but he will also be in keeping with God’s will.

MISSION STATEMENT Our mission at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church is to be faithful to God in our living, giving and witnessing. Our primary aim is to recover the lost, reach for the fallen and rejoice with the saints. We further strive to be Christ-like in our integrity, mutual respect and loyalty.

HISTORY n January of 1866, seven months after slaves were freed in Texas (June 19, 1865), a small group of freed slaves organized the first African American Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. They were assisted by the First Baptist Church and missionaries.

After holding worship services at the First Baptist Church and the German Baptist Church, they began to hold services on Buffalo Bayou in a “Brush Arbor.” Later, they moved to “Baptist Hill” located at Rusk and Bagby until the present site was purchased. Services were conducted by ministers who traveled to different locations, at stated times.

In 1868, one of Antioch’s members, Jack Yates, was ordained at the first Association meeting for African American Baptist Churches. This was the first National Baptist Convention.

Rev. Jack Yates became the first pastor of Antioch.

As the membership grew and additional space was needed, Rev. Yates led the church to purchase its present site and build a brick structure. The church, located in the center of Freedman’s Town, was the center of activity for the African-American community. It was the first brick structure built and owned

by African-Americans in Houston.

Antioch provided the former slaves with opportunities to learn not only about God, but also provided ministries to help them develop educationally, economically and socially.

The first educational opportunity for freed African-Americans began at Antioch. With the help of two missionaries, Rev. Yates began the Baptist Academy. The Baptist Academy taught fundamentals such as: reading, writing, and arithmetic,; in addition to trades, thus enabling men and women to start their own businesses. The Baptist Academy later became Houston College. Houston College was the fore-

runner of Texas Southern University.

Economic development and recreational activities were also encouraged and supported at Antioch. The Old Landmark Baptist Association of Texas was organized at Antioch. Under Rev. Yates’ leadership, members were encouraged and assisted in buying property, owning homes and businesses.

The Emancipation Park, in conjunction with Trinity Methodist Church, was purchased for recreational activities and community celebrations, such as the 19th of June.

With the vision and support of Rev. Yates and Antioch, the first AfricanAmerican College in the state of Texas began . This was Bishop College.

Just as they did then, Antioch’s congregation and leaders continue to provide needed and vital services to the Houston community.

RED BRICK CHURCH he Red Brick Church was designed by African-American Richard Allen, who was also a member of the Texas Legislature. The Red Brick Church was erected in 1875 and was the first brick structure owned by African-Americans in Houston, Texas.

The second story was added in 1890.

The structure’s Gothic features ,with pointed arch windows and doors, have been nationally acclaimed. Today members still worship in the sanctuary’s original handmade pews.

The Antioch of today is nestled between giant skyscrapers, surrounded by steel and concrete. Under the leadership of Pastor O. B. Winkley, Jr., she continues to serve the needs her people and her community, proudly proclaiming the message:Jesus Saves.

Antioch continues her commitment to the community through assistance to the urban hungry and homeless, weekly luncheon Bible Study for workers in the Downtown Houston area, and aiding families year round through a vibrant outreach ministry.

Energy Meeting to Share Potential Impact of Shale Oil on Minority Opportunities

HOUSTON - One hundred million years ago, a wide swathe of sea cut the North American continent into eastern and western portions. As sea levels lowered, this sea receded, leaving in its wake inland seas and lush grasslands. The Tertiary-period organisms that lived and died here became fossilized.

As millions of years passed, these remains were subject to high temperatures and gravitational pressure and were converted into petroleum. But the conditions that created liquid petroleum in other areas of the world weren’t quite as strong or long-lasting. These conditions resulted in oil shale.

Texas and Shale Today, the shale revolution is sweeping the country and revolutionizing energy and the economy, with Texas and the Eagle Ford Shale leading the way. Texas is the nation’s top oil and natural gas producing state and leads the country in energy technology and policy.

Shale Offer New Economic Possibilities Blacks and other minorities who own land in these areas and those looking for a career in oil and gas industry stand to make great gains from the development of this technology.

That is the topic of discussion at the second quarter 2014 general body meeting of the American Association of Blacks in Energy, Houston Chapter on June 26 at the

ExxonMobil Building.

Industry Expert Frank Adamek, P.E., will talk about “The U.S. Shale Play and the many Opportunities for Minorities.”

Adamek is Executive Chief Engineer in charge of drilling and production for GE Oil & Gas. He also has served in this role since 2007, and has been with GE Oil & Gas and its various legacy companies for almost 40 years.

American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) is a national, nonprofit association of more than 1,700 energy professionals and business owners within 44 chapters in seven regions throughout the United States.

Texas is home to a number of prolific oil and gas plays, including the Eagle Ford Shale, Permian Basin, Barnett Shale, Haynesville/ Bossier Shale, and Granite Wash.

The Eagle Ford Shale has the potential to become the most active oil and gas play in North America, with approximately 235 drilling rigs currently running.

Operators forecast that the play will continue to develop for decades to come.

Recently, a new extraction technology has been developed called “fracking,”. It uses pressurized water-chemical-sand mixtures to fracture shale layers, releasing their trapped oil and gas reserves.

Shale is a rock type defined by its high clay content and thin layers that flake apart. Layers without much organic content appear grey, tan, or a number of other colors depending on their mineral makeup, while shales bearing organic compounds like oil look blackish.

The organisms were once living creatures, perhaps marine algae like those that supplied the world’s largest oil reserves.

At some point, they became intermixed in clay-rich mud.

HOUSTON- Recently, Manager Bo Porter, outfielders Dexter Fowler and George Springer and first base coach Tarrik Brock made a special visit to the Astros Urban Youth Academy in Acres Home.

The Astros are currently holding a free summer camp at the Academy for boys and girls ages 7-17 that includes baseball and softball instruction and the opportunity to play games. The camp lasts for five weeks. Porter, Fowler, Springer and Brock each spoke to the campers and also took photographs.

HOUSTON – National HIV Testing Day is coming June 27, 2014 and Legacy Community Health Services encourages community members to get tested, know their status and

learn about HIV prevention methods.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV and almost 1 in 6 (15.8%) are unaware of their infection.

“With the advancements in HIV treatment, individuals living with the disease are expected to live a similar life span as their peers; however, this is only if they know their HIV status and

volunteerism and being involved in community education programs.

She volunteers her time once every 1-2 months participating in church health fairs, performing high school sport physicals, and conducting Asthma prevention workshops at local daycare centers.

Pierre also attends local school with the Doctor’s Day Outreach Program conducted by the Houston Medical forum in which students are educated about careers in the medical field.

Her education background includes attending medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. While attending medical school, she received the Ralph D. Hanna Scholarship. With an initial decision to specialize in Internal Medicine, she also developed an interest in treating children during a pediatric rotation and chose “MEDPEDS” as a specialty. Dr. Pierre is board-certified in Internal Medicine and has memberships is several medical organizations such as the American College of Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, National Medical Association and American Medical Association.

After her formal medical training, Dr. Pierre worked as an urgent care and locum tenems with Southwest Urgent Care and Mint Physicians Staffing respectively.

In October of 2011, she joined the Memorial Herman Medical Group in Pearland, Texas.

Until a cure is discovered, the battle has not been won against the disease.

To observe National HIV Testing Day, Legacy will offer free testing opportunities in the community as well as information about prevention methods such as PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis), an HIV prevention regimen for healthy, negative status people who are at ongoing, high risk of contracting the virus.

The regimen consists of patients taking Truvada, a medicine that prevents HIV from multiplying as it enters the body and stops the virus from establishing a permanent infection.

For more than a year, Legacy has offered the regimen as an additional option for HIV prevention.

“Legacy is very proud to offer PrEP as another method

in the HIV prevention toolbox,” Leonard said. “It provides another level of protection and a powerful barrier against transmission.”
