The court ruled that the city must repeal the ordinance

or place on the November ballot. After a lengthy city council debate and an even longer court battle, Houston's Equal Rights Ordinance is up for a vote next month.

You will be asked to decide the future of the law.

Radio, Tv, and newspaper ads urging a no vote featuring former Astro Lance Berkman label led it 'the bathroom ordinance' and express concern that the city law could open up women's restrooms, locker rooms and showers to “troubled men." In some conversations the Black Community should be offended that they would compare equally the support of the LGBT cause to the black American—or Negro American—cause, which are two different things,” “Your sexual preference is a choice. To be black American, a person does not have a choice with that – said in a recent article. According

to research; HERO does not create rights for protected classes of Houstonians to do anything. It allows them to file complaints if they've been discriminated against. It is the understanding HERO requires the Houston Inspector General to work toward a resolution before filing a criminal case.

If a case is filed, it is heard in Houston's municipal court.

The ordinance does prohibit discrimination against transgendered Houstonians, but Eyewitness News looked deeper at the claims that this could open women's bathroom doors.

From 1946 to 1964, the United States experienced a surge in the birth rate throughout the country.

This post-World War II phenomenon is characterized by most historians as the “BABY BOOM” era. Veterans returning home from the second “Great War” in Europe undoubtedly missed their wives quite a bit.

This population explosion was fueled by a strong, stable economy along with a wealthy middle class enjoying the benefits of war production and swollen bank accounts. In 1950 alone, nearly 2.5 million babies were born according to the U.S. Census

Bureau. It was a time of prosperity, hope, change, and revolution.

Among those G.I.’s returning home victorious were Negro (that’s what we were called, amongst other things, back then) servicemen who fought gallantly alongside their White counterparts in segregated units. In the back of their minds they knew that another war was awaiting them on American soil as they prepared to face a familiar enemy that had not gone away.

Liberating the French in Normandy on “D-Day” and rescuing Jewish Holocaust victims from the grips of the Auschwitz concentration camps should have been enough fighting for an entire lifetime for these brave men. Instead, racism was next in line.

The Negro soldier returned home from war much differently than he left. Gone was the passive, head-

bowing, terrified “boy” who feared questioning the racist policies of a Jim Crow south and a de jure/de facto north. This “MAN” came back expecting and demanding change with boldness and clarity. With the help of young people, collegians, clergy, protests, sit-ins, marches, legislation and threats of violence, our nation was forced to reckon with the possibility of a new “Civil War” since the first one didn’t completely fulfill its obligations. BLACK BABY BOOMERS in general, were not the subtle types who just sat back and let racism kick their asses; they fought back. By fighting back, “AFRICAN-AMERICANS” obtained some of the rights and privileges of White America while cementing itself firmly into the middle class.

Fast forward to 2015…

BOOMER turned fifty-one this year and the African-American variety seems to be unraveling.

Especially, in the South. There was a time when we abhorred anything that looked, smelled, and sounded like racism. Our forefathers witnessed families being pulled out of their homes and lynched in trees. They were around when traffic stops equated to swift incarcerations prior to the protections from Miranda Rights and illegal searches. When Black people died “mysteriously”, their communities bonded together, meeting in homes, schools, and churches to form a unified front bent on finding out the truth. Now, it seems like African-American “BABY BOOMERS” have gone soft. The “boom” has gone.

Our once proud middle class has become content hiding behind our gated communities and cruis-

ing down the street in our luxury autos. We’ve seemed to forgotten that the “someday” ending of “We shall overcome” has not shown up. Consequently, we are gradually returning to becoming that “Strange Fruit” hanging from “the poplar trees” that Billie Holiday so eerily sang about. We’re being hung by the opinions of others on social media whose perceptions of our children are vile, erroneous, and evil. They wouldn’t know our business if we didn’t put it “out there” nor would they be able to hide behind a shiny monitor while typing degrading messages unafraid of whom they might be offending. It is these opinions that cloud our sensibilities into believing that what we know is right, is wrong. Therefore, our people are getting soft.

CHANGES IN THE OVER-65 EXEMPTION

legislation passed earlier this year has required us to change the way we list exemptions on our web site. Effective September 1, appraisal districts cannot post information on the Internet that would indicate the age of a property owner, including information indicating that a property owner is 65 years of age or older. So we have changed the way we list exemptions on our web site. This change has resulted in quite a few calls and emails from property owners asking if their over65 exemption is still in place.

For example, when you pulled up your property account on our web site before September 1, the account would list “Residential Homestead” and “Over-65” under Exemption Type.

Because of the change in the law, the

web site now will say “Homestead (Multiple)” if you have both the residential homestead and over-65 exemption. If this is the case, rest assured that your Over-65 exemption is still in place. The same is true for those with the disability exemption or veteran exemptions – our web site will say “Homestead (Multiple).”

Last month I discussed the residence homestead exemption and how this exemption is the single biggest step you can take to reduce your taxes.

The general homestead exemption applies to any owner-occupied home, but if you are 65 or older or disabled, a greater homestead exemption is available from many entities. I’d like to talk a bit more about the homestead exemption for those who are 65 or older. The City of Houston recently increased this exemption to $160,000 to match Harris County’s exemption, and all of our school districts offer a 65 or older exemption, as well.

Once you receive a 65 or older person’s exemption, your school taxes

cannot increase above the amount you pay in the first year you get the exemption unless you make improvements on your property. You qualify for the exemption as soon as you or your spouse becomes 65, and you get the exemption for the entire year. If you’ve recently reached this milestone or have family members who have done so, it is a great additional benefit. As with the general homestead exemption, you must apply to the appraisal district for the 65 or older exemption. The form is available on HCAD’s website at www.hcad.org .

JEB BUSH’S “FREE STUFF” RACIAL INSULT WAS A SHREWD CALCULATION Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst

GOP presidential hopeful Jeb Bush knew exactly what he was doing when he insulted African-American voters by alleging that the Democrats buy their votes with “FREE STUFF.” In fact, it was no accident that he hurled his slur at Democrats at a campaign stop in South Carolina.

Bush is wallowing in single digits in the polls and he needed some spark to get the attention and touch the nerve of Deep South white, conservative voters. It’s not a new ploy. Three and a half decades ago then GOP presidential candidate Ronald Reagan kicked off his presidential bid by thundering about states rights to a lily white campaign crowd in Neshoba, Mississippi.

In 2012, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney punched the same familiar race-tinged code themes: out of control spend thrift, bloated government to a virtually lily white crowd in Norfolk, Virginia. Romney later doubled down on his subtle race card code message by insulting blacks as Bush did with the crack that Democrats supposedly bribe them by ladling out all sorts of welfare and entitlement goodies.

Bush can’t openly espouse states rights as Reagan crudely, and Romney only slightly less crudely, did. But he updated the code themes by lambasting Democrats, wasteful big government, run-away deficit spending on entitlement programs, and their full-blown assaults on the so-called Obamacare, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security programs, and labor unions.

The “FREE STUFF” to blacks dig was simply etching a lurid racial stereotype graphic to it for conservative voters. And stereotype it is. The majority of the recipients of these programs have always beenwhite seniors, retirees, women, and

children, and white workers. But these programs have been artfully sold to many Americans as handouts to lazy, undeserving blacks, Hispanics and minorities.

Bush as Reagan and Romney ripped a page directly from the time tested Southern Strategy playbook of Richard Nixon for GOP presidential candidates. The strategy has always had two hinges. One is to attack the allegedly liberal and bloated and tax-and-spend big government. The second is to firmly lock down the majority popular and electoral vote in the 11 old Confederate and Border states.

These states hold more than one-third of the electoral votes needed to bag the White House.

Bush’s blunt revival of the Southern Strategy bluntly recognizes two realities. If he’s the eventual GOP presidential nominee, he will get a negligible percentage of the black vote, and only a slightly higher percentage of the Latino vote. Despite much talk that the white conservative vote has shrunk to the point of being marginalized, it isn’t. Whites make up more than 60 percent of America’s electorate. That’s a huge drop from what they represented in the 1980 presidential election. But even that doesn’t tell the white story.

In the 2012 election, President Obama won only a majority of white vote in four states Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut and New Hampshire. He could not even get a majority of white voters in Deep Blue, heavily Democratic California, New York and Pennsylvania. Overall, Romney bagged nearly sixty percent of white voters. That translated out to a whopping 20 percent margin over Obama.

The raw racial vote numbers belie another stark political reality: Lyndon Johnson in 1964 was the last Democratic presidential candidate to win more than half the white vote. In every election since Nixon’s win in 1968 whites have voted consistently by either sizeable or comfortable margins for GOP presidential candidates.

We’ve all been taught the classical mythology term of what it means.

1. a being of godlike prowess and beneficence who often came to be honored as a divinity.

2. (in the Homeric period) a warrior-chieftain of special strength, courage, or ability.

3. (in later antiquity) an immortal being; demigod. More or less someone a HERO saves the day when we are in trouble and we look up to that person. A superman, A batman, a wonder woman.

As I stated in a previous editorial ‘Why H.E.R.O. Does Nothing for the African-American Community’ or any community, “There is not a day that goes by that I do not receive a phone call from someone in the community asking me about the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (H.E.R.O.). Many are confused by the ordinance and are largely uncertain as to what it means for the African-American community. After much pondering, it is obvious to me that H.E.R.O. holds very little benefit for my community; by my community I am speaking about the mainstream of the African-American community.”

We need to ellude Propostition 1.

It is an illusion. Anyone will vote for a HERO since it sounds positive especially when they are uneducated about what H.E.R.O. really is. We are thinking it will save us.

Truth is and WE MUST Understand, that this type of Equal Rights is only putting us in a greater DANGER ZONE. It will open up a can of worms and when it does no one will have any control. You really need to think about this.

We MUST Understand, H.E.R.O. has separated the Houston for known reasons. Most

notably because it not only raises the issue of gay rights, but also places it directly in our faces. H.E.R.O. prohibits discrimination against people in the workplace, housing, and public accommodations --- restaurants, hotels, etc. --- because of their sex, race, ethnicity, age, etc.

Considering that these protections already exist for AfricanAmericans there is little reason, other than a moral argument that calls for Black Christians to compromise upon the homosexual issue that they have traditionally denounced and rebuked in the name of Jesus. Put simply, the only impact that H.E.R.O. will have upon the African-American community is a place for Blacks in our modern day slavery system “JAIL” and any resources used for this cause will quite simply be a waste. I can’t stress enough that your money and your vote are the most powerful things you have; be careful who yo give them to.

Yes, it is your life and your choice; and I am for equal rights.

Some people will blow this out of proportion but I am not discriminating against you as an individual but what H.E.R.O. allows.

Unfortunately for that subculture of the African-American community, I take significant issue not only with their assertion that they are a notable part of the Black community, but also that their existence should affect the negative gaze that AfricanAmericans should view H.E.R.O. through. There is more but the biggest deal is Transgenders – the opposite sex - a man/woman in the bathroom with your child. HELL NO for H.E.R.O.! Just imagine an impersonating transgender (molester) walks in the bathroom with your baby girl – Now that’s a real mother for ya!

We MUST Understand

Now this does not deny the historical contributions of AfricanAmericans who have embraced an alternative lifestyle. Even a cursory view of the historic struggle for African-American rights throughout the twentieth-century simultaneously highlights not only the presence of many African-American homosexuals in prominent spaces (Bayard Rustin, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, and Alice Walker), but also our community’s incredibly hypocritical ability to simultaneously accept their sizable intellectual and activist gifts while repudiating their person.

It should not be open for discussion, this is going to far and somethings just need to be kept separated. It ain’t no question that remains. Open your eyes because Black Houstonians should not support H.E.R.O.? Hell no one should support H.E.R.O. Considering its non-impact upon the Black community, We MUST Understand that there is no justifiable political reason for us to support H.E.R.O. Black People, We MUST Understand, that here it is we still to this day don’t have equal rights because of our race so what make you think that you gone have anymore equal rights being black and gay. You will be the first one convicted of rape and whatever else it is they can throw u under for once you are allowed to enter into a womans bathroom. It is a setup.

Leave it where it is and DO NOT VOTE PROPOSITION 1!

‘PROPOSITION 1’ FROM PG. 1

It has been against the law in Houston to use the opposite sex's bathroom to cause a disturbance for decades.

A quote by Mike Huckabee: “For those who do not think that we are under threat, simply recognize the fact that we are now in a city after city watching ordinances that say your 7 year old daughter – if she goes into a the restroom – cannot be offended and you can’t be offended if she’s greeted there by a 42 year-old man who feels more like a woman the he does a man’.

And so the restroom saga begins.

Restrooms are the last area of modern society to be segregated by gender. According to research. advocates for LGBTQ rights have long made the argument for gender-neutral bathroom options, as a solution to the incidents of harassment and violence against

transgendered people. Making it even about any person who is dependent on another for care is put at risk by split bathrooms.

Some In other words have made this to be more of an issue in other areas: the disabled, the elderly and children. Stating that society’s most vulnerable cannot always choose the gender of their caretakers, and sometimes they, or their caretakers, need to “go.” Is this not crazy?

They continue to add that this it is not only a women’s issue. That Dads have spoken to say that the uncomfortable situation of taking their daughters to the bathroom is compounded by the grossness of men’s rooms, and the fact that social norms prohibit men from entering women’s rooms, like, ever.

best While many people believe sexual preference is not in fact a choice at all, pastors and several leaders in the community, who has both LGBT family members and congregants, swiftly bats that notion away. There is a better way. The city knows this will be a problem. The city needs to put forth a comprehensive plan, listing what in fact will be the rights of transgenders in this case. We then should allow stakeholders input on our proposed plan to reiterate that this is not wanted in the community. We're asking people to put a lot of faith in a small paragraph on the ballot - a few words that will affect the lives of millions of residents and property owners. The petition that voters signed contains wildly different wording from the ballot language we are asked to vote on.

The ballot language is form over substance.

Now is not the time. We need to do this right, and Prop 1 is not the right way to do it. Without an implementation ordinance, prior to voter approval, principles regarding Prop 1 are just promises worth nothing more than the breath used to utter them. We ask you to join us during early voting, Oct. 19 and on Election Day Nov. 3, in voting against Prop 1. Twenty years, maybe 40, is a long time to have to pay off a misguided plan. There has been no public input. We should have a say. We can work out the right plan, with all the stakeholders, this election cycle. Hell No to Hero, we cannot support Proposition 1.

These are the feminists who feel that women should come together around “women’s issues” and battle out our differences later.

In failing to acknowledge differences and the differential impact of a set of policies, these feminists make it difficult for women to come together.

Sanger published the Birth Control Review at the same time that black men, returning from World War I, were lynched in uniform.

That she did not see the harm in embracing exclusionary jargon about sterilization and immigration suggests that she was, at best, socially myopic”- article That’s reason enough to suggest that her leadership was flawed and her legacy crippled by her insensitivity.

Planned Parenthood itself is a misleading name, designed to obscure the role as agency of death to Black babies annually.

To some, it is more correctly called Planned Infanticide.

In an online article, Sanger focused particularly on blacks, saying “Colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated.” Sanger also wrote “Slaves, Latin, and Hebrew immigrants are…a deadweight of human waste. Blacks, soldiers, and Jews are a menace to the (human) race.”

Over 13 MILLION AfricanAmerican babies have been aborted and over 80% of Planned Parenthood abortions are either Black or Hispanic babies.

Today’s Black Lives Matter proponents apparently do not know this hidden side of Planned Parenthood’s abortion deaths of Blacks, or they would not keep

supporting political candidates who vote for taxpayer funding of Planned clinics that destroy so many black babies.

“Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry foster a culture that celebrates abandonment and death while pushing for the disintegration of the traditional black family”. Planned Parenthood simultaneously spends millions of dollars lobbying the federal government to expand its spending on welfare and contraception to push abortion to the Black community–especially those abandoned by men, which ½ of our men are already affected by the system.

According to research, the comparison with whites and other minorities is striking.

Whites made up 78 percent of live births, but only 57 percent of abortions. Non-black minorities had 7 percent of live births and 5 percent of abortions. If the aborted children had been born for either group, the percentage increase in the number of children born to these groups would have been less than that for blacks: 16 and 32 percent, respectively.

Data from 1973 on indicate that black women’s share of abortions has consistently been at least twice their share of live births.

But not all those babies would necessarily have been born if abortion were illegal or harder to obtain. A number of recent academic studies have found that making abortion more difficult results in less pre-marital sex and fewer pre-marital pregnancies.

Isn’t this genocide? We are the only minority in America that is on the decline in population.

ACROSS A BRIDGE? At least 200, it turns out. Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen recently hosted his 2nd annual “Building Bridges”; sports tournament, attracting about 200 ethnically diverse young people to the gym at Sam Houston High School for a free good time. (Not to mention the teams competing at the same time at the soccer field behind the school).

The event could not have come

around again at a more crucial time, considering that it is aimed at strengthening the connections – “Building Bridges” – between law enforcement and the next generation. After a year of gloomy national events, represented by buzzword such as “Ferguson,” the tournament reflected the contrasting bright side of community engagement.

Precinct 1, with more than 700,000 residents, stretches from Acres Home and Kashmere to River Oaks and Bellaire, encompassing many of the region’s richest and poorest neighborhoods. Because of its community orientation, the constable’s office does

a lot of groundwork in neighborhoods, working with homeowners associations, chambers of commerce, youth groups, schools and other institutions at the grassroots. The annual tournament gives young people and law enforcement officers a chance to see eye to eye at that grassroots level.

“We were there to tell youth that we not only are dedicated to keeping them and their families safe, but we are also passionate about safeguarding the fragile bonds between public servants and the public they serve.”

AUSTIN – The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), in partnership with 28 local workforce development boards and the Texas Veterans Commission, will host statewide veterans hiring fairs on Thursday, Nov. 12.

TWC’s fourth annual Hiring Red, White & You! Statewide Hiring Fair is a joint initiative supported by the Office of the Governor, the Texas Medical Center and the Texas Veterans Commission to connect veterans and their spouses in Texas with employers who are seeking veterans’ exceptional skills.

“Fewer things are more important than honoring our veterans,” said Governor Abbott. “One of the best ways we can do this is by working with prospective employers to provide employment opportunities for our heroes. I applaud the Texas Workforce Commission for their commitment to our veterans and I look forward to continuing my work with them to provide economic opportunity for all of Texas’ former military members.”

The multi-city event is designed to assist veterans, service members and their spouses as they seek their next career opportunity. Employers participate at no cost and are encouraged to contact their local Workforce Solutions office for more information. Over the past three years, Hiring Red, White & You! has connected more than 31,000 veterans with more than 4,700 employers.

“Our veterans are highlytrained individuals who have the technical and professional skills employers need to boost their company’s performance,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “The Hiring Red, White & You! statewide hiring fairs provide a great opportunity for Texas employers to recruit these highly skilled veterans.”

The Texas Veterans Commission is preparing

veterans for these hiring fairs by assisting them with applications and résumés, interviewing techniques, as well as one-on-one counseling services.

“Through the training our military receive, veterans have acquired important skills that employers are seeking,” said Texas Veterans Commission Executive Director Thomas Palladino. “This hiring event represents the importance of Texas employers working together to help our veterans who have served our nation as they begin the next chapter of their lives.”

The national unemployment rate in 2014 for all veterans is 5.3 percent1. In contrast, for those veterans who served in the military since September 2001, the unemployment rate is higher at 7.2 percent2. There are 1.6 million3 total veterans throughout Texas, which is the 2nd highest state population of veterans in the country.

“Many highly-qualified service members are returning to civilian life every day,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “I encourage all veterans looking for employment to seek out the Hiring Red, White & You! hiring fair taking place in their area. This is a great way to network with employers who have job openings to be filled.”

Employers who hire veterans may be eligible for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which allows employers to receive up to $9,600 on federal business income or payroll tax benefits when they hire from certain qualified groups of veterans.

NEW PRECISION MEDICINE APPROACH TO CANCER TREATMENT

Someone who is diagnosed with cancer today would typically receive treatment for their disease based on the type of cancer they have. For example, there are specific, standard treatments for patients with breast cancer or colorectal cancer or prostate cancer. That strategy is now evolving, thanks to a new approach to medicine that is focused not on where in the body the cancer is located but on what is inside the tumor itself.

And in January 2015, President Obama took up the mantle of this new approach to patient care, known as precision medicine, announcing a $215 million initiative aimed at speeding progress in this area of research.

The Precision Medicine Initiative, as it’s called, is included in the President’s 2016 budget proposal.

Although the funding would support research that applies to a range of diseases and conditions, its initial focus will be on cancer, where the movement toward precision medicine has already taken hold, due in no small part to sustained and substantial federal funding support for cancer research. This support has enabled the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to make significant advances over the last decade in areas like genomics and the development of molecularly targeted therapies.

At its heart, as NCI acting director Dr. Doug Lowy explains, precision medicine is about tailoring prevention, diagnosis, and treatment according to the individual characteristics of each patient.

In cancer, treatment already takes into account some characteristics of each patient. Currently, for example, treatments may be based on how a specific disease presents in each patient (for example, is it only in the organ in which it started, or has it spread?), on whether the tumor is influenced by certain hormones (as may be the case in prostate and breast cancer, for example), on whether a person has other health conditions that could influence their ability to tolerate treatment, as well as on other factors. We know in some cases that the type of tumor also makes a difference. Even if a patient has a molecular abnormality associated with response to a certain drug in a different tumor, it does not necessarily mean their (different) tumor will also shrink when they are treated with the same drug. We now have the tools to try to begin to discern in which tumors a good response is more likely.

Precision medicine goes several steps further. In cancer, for instance, factors such as where in the body a cancer originated may become less important than the molecular alterations – changes occurring in a person’s genes - that are thought to be driving the growth of a tumor.

There are several cancer drugs being used today, and several more under development, that are specifically designed to target and kill cells that have those mutations.

Following this approach, a patient with breast cancer and a patient with stomach cancer may be candidates for the same treatment, if an analysis of their tumors shows that the same molecular alteration is fueling their cancer.

applied to prevention and screening for early signs of cancer, Dr. Lowy says. “Precision medicine is being used now in screening for cervical cancer,” he explains. Virtually all cases of cervical cancer are caused by infection with the human papillomavirus, or HPV. And, based on results from a number of studies, Dr. Lowy continues, “we are now seeing the transition from the traditional Pap test for cervical cancer screening to tests that look for the presence of HPV, which the studies have shown can be even more effective at reducing the number of women diagnosed with cervical cancer.”

In the African American community, precision medicine holds promise in accelerating progress toward eliminating cancer disparities.

Cancer has had a more profound impact on the African American community than any other U.S. racial/ethnic group in terms of the percentage of cases and deaths from cancer.

Although factors such as access to care play an important role in such disparities, some studies have also suggested that part of this disparity may be tied to biological factors, including cancer-inducing molecular alterations that may be more commonly seen in African Americans than in other racial/ethnic groups. As more therapies that can specifically target these molecular drivers of cancer are developed, it may mean that more African Americans will have access to more-effective treatments.

The cancer research community recently took a major step forward in making precision medicine a reality for more people. Earlier this summer, NCI launched a cuttingedge nationwide clinical trial called NCI-MATCH. In this clinical trial, researchers are analyzing patients’ tumors to determine whether they contain specific molecular abnormalities for which a targeted therapy exists and assigning treatments based on the abnormality, rather than their cancer type.

AUSTIN - Yet Republicans are forging ahead, sparked by secretly recorded videos showing Planned Parenthood officials discussing how they obtain tissue from aborted fetuses for medical research. Those videos have helped mushroom the longtime political fight over abortion into a prominent issue for next year's elections. They've also refueled Congress' always-emotional clashes on the subject, with a recent debate featuring a poster-sized photo of a scarred, aborted fetus and accusations from each side that the other was simply trying to drum up campaign donations.

WASHINGTON - A divided House voted Friday to block Planned Parenthood's federal funds for a year, as Republican leaders labored to keep GOP outrage over abortion from spiraling into an impasse with President Barack Obama that could shut down the government. The House used a nearly party-line 241-187 vote to clear the legislation, which stands little chance of enactment. Senate Democrats have enough votes to block it, and for good measure the White House has promised a veto.

AUSTIN - Members of the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce have been aware that the black community was shrinking for years, Chamber CEO Natalie Madeira Cofield said. So, this year, the Chamber launched the campaign #IAmBlackAustin.Chamber members felt that there was no longer a centralized space for black life in the city, Cofield said; #IAmBlackAustin is a direct response to that concern.

The campaign includes a website that promotes community events, as well as promotional videos and photo exhibits featuring African-Americans working and playing within the city. New videos and photo exhibits are released each quarter and afterward kept on display at the Chamber's DedrickHamilton House, the home of one of the area's first freed slaves.

The room gives the sense of history behind Hanks’ new role as a U.S. District Court judge on the Galveston bench, the oldest federal judgeship in Texas.

He will be the first African American federal judge to preside over the court and will serve with life tenure.

TEXAS - August marked the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. This historic law was passed in response to an era in which many states, particularly in the south, mandated literacy tests, poll taxes, and other devices to institutionalize the disenfranchisement of the African American vote. There were thousands of dedicated citizens and grassroots organizers who sacrificed blood and tears fighting these discriminatory devices in order to ensure that all eligible Americans can participate in our democracy, regardless of race, ethnicity, or economic background.

We are unfortunately reminded on a regular basis that it remains a work in progress to fulfill the constitutional promise that each and every eligible Texan has the right to have their voices heard at the ballot box: controversial voter ID laws and gerrymandered districts to suppress the vote have regrettably become the norm.

But there's an easy way to fight back: register and vote.

Monday, October 5, is the deadline to get registered if you want to vote in the November 3 election. Click here to learn how to get registered. Due to this upcoming election, Houston will undergo a dramatic change in our city's leadership, electing a State Senator Rodney Ellis District 13 new mayor, city controller, and a number of city council and school board members.

Early voting begins Monday, October 19, and runs through Friday, October 30. Remember, you can vote at any early voting location in the county in which you are registered, but on Election Day - November 3 - you must vote at the polling location in your precinct.

And remember to bring your photo ID when you vote, as Texas' voter ID law remains in effect.

‘NO BULLY HERE’ AMBASSADOR AWARD

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee today will receive the ‘No Bully Here’ Ambassador Award during the No Bully Here Music Festival in Houston, Texas. The Congresswoman released the following statement: “Today I was honored to be named the recipient of the ‘No Bully Here’ Ambassador Award. It is a gratifying acknowledgment of my efforts over the past two decades to eradicate the scourge of bullying from our schools and playgrounds and cyberspace. It also an encouragement and a challenge to continue this important and necessary work until the job is done. There is still much work to do.

“Studies by the National Center for Educational Studies indicate that 14 percent of 12-18-year-olds report being victims of direct or indirect bullying. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 1 out of every 4 kids will be abused by another youth.

This is unacceptable. According to the Josephson Institute of Ethics, one third of all high school students say that violence is a big problem at their school, and nearly one in four say they do not feel very safe there. Bullying is

no longer just a schoolyard problem.

“Gone are the days that children can come home and find sanctuary from their bullies; technological advances have made it easy for young people to be tormented on social networks at any time from any place.

They are never out of harm’s reach.

This needs to end. Children should be protected, and no child should be bullied for exercising their right to be themselves.

“Every year, millions of Americans are physically or psychologically attacked on the basis of their skin color, ethnicity, physical or mental abilities, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity, religion, or age.

“In 2015, at least thirteen million children will be teased, taunted, and physically assaulted by their peers, making bullying the most common form of violence our nation’s youth experience this year. Bullying is not confined within classroom walls.

“As more retirees move into assisted living facilities, bullying among our elderly communities is also on the rise. This disturbing trend, coupled with a lack of comprehensive federal protections on the issue,

underscores how much work remains to be done and the significant role the Congressional Anti-Bullying Caucus that I co-founded plays in finding solutions to the problem.

“It is also why I have also reintroduced the “Juvenile Accountability Block Grants Reauthorization and Bullying Prevention and Intervention Act,” (H.R. 68), which reauthorizes and increases funding for the Juvenile Accountability Block Grant program and establishes new grant programs in the areas of cyberbullying prevention and to gang deterrence. Kids cannot learn or reach their potential if they are afraid to go to school.

“That is why I worked so hard to pass the Jackson Lee Amendment to the “Student Success Act,” (H.R. 5), which authorizes and supports research-based programs that prevent bullying and cyberbullying, disrupt recruitment activity by violent extremist groups, and deter gang involvement.

It is time for us to stand together and stop bullying. Everyone deserves to feel safe and free. Working together, we can make our community, and every community in America, a bully-free zone.

HOUSTON - Big Brothers Big Sisters celebrated sixty-five years of one-to-one mentoring at their annual Big Black Tie Ball— Points of Light Night recently at the beautiful Omni Houston Hotel. Manon and Matthew Kebodeaux served as this year’s Big Black Tie Ball chairs with KPRC Local 2 Anchor, Rachel McNeill, as Mistress of Ceremonies, and Tim deJong, owner of Wimberley Glasswork, as the featured artist. H-E-B and Winell Herron were honored for their ongoing support to the mission of one-to-one mentoring and the Greater Houston community.

The evening was full of inspirational stories and videos

that highlighted the positive impact a mentor can have on the life of a child facing adversity.

Former Little Sister, Leandra McLennon, brought tears to guests’ eyes when she shared her story of her sixteen-year relationship with her Big Sister, Cecelia Rieb. Leandra explained with confidence, “My mom taught me how to survive, but my Big Sister taught me how to thrive.”

Shortly after, Pierce Bush, recently announced as the new CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, stood before the audience with infectious energy as he reenacted his first adventure with his Little Brother Jaylyn.

On their first adventure to the

Houston Zoo Pierce knew the match was perfect as he watched his six year old Little Brother, Jaylyn, approached the lady scanning tickets. Smiling, Jaylyn said, “I know what you’re thinking, I bet you’re thinking how nice my eyebrows are, huh?”

As expected, the ballroom explodes in laughter, but Pierce quickly gathered the audiences’ attention back as he passionately bellowed, “As an organization, we know we must do more.

Currently there are 809 kids waiting for a Big Brother/Big Sister. All of the money raised through our Points of Light Night will help in our efforts to affect transformational change in the youth we serve and the communities they live in.”

Following the dinner and program, over 300 guests enjoyed an outstanding live and silent auction. Afterward they were free to gamble at the casino tables, grab a drink at the bar, or dance and sing along to ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”, Tom Petty’s “American Girl”, and Cindy Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and various other songs covered by the spectacular band SKYROCKET.
