Before I Lay it Down...

hat I’m about to say may be unsettling to some folk, while others may agree with me silently. Nevertheless, I am going to talk about something that I know something about, that is, our Black children. This will not be from a coach’s perspective, but from a teacher’s.

I’m qualified to talk about this subject from the teaching aspect first, because many folk think that

members of the coaching fraternity are just concerned about athletics.

They think that all we know is “P.E.” I graduated from PVAMU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, with a minor in History.

Along the way I obtained a couple of Masters Degrees in Counseling and Educational Administration.

Coaching is my “other” job, and I do it because I can and not because I have to. Therefore, I spend more time teaching, lecturing, grading, and doing my best to inspire students to be the best they can be. I’m a teacher, first.

I will be completing my 11th year as a “highly qualified teacher” based upon my certificate of credentials. I have more continuing

education hours than I can shake a stick at and I love what I do. I am a veteran teacher. Now, that I have all of that out of the way, I can say this: African-American kids are baddddd!

Not Michael Jackson “bad”, but hard-headed, disrespectful, they don’t give a damn, BAD! I’m just gonna tell it like it is…

Sure, I can say this about “other” races/ethnicities of children, but I tend to expect “more” outta of my people’s kids than I do of the others.

That feeling is based upon, I guess, my love and understanding of the history of my Black people. It is also an eye-witness account of what I’ve seen walking in the hallways of the four high schools I have taught at along with the lone junior high. I’m

not talking about what somebody told me, I’m experiencing it daily.

I understand that some kids grow up in poor environments and lousy socioeconomic conditions. I, like thousands of other teachers, go through extensive training seminars in order to understand these issues.

Many of us grew up in these same environments, and I’m not just talking about Black teachers. Therefore, don’t tell me/us that we “don’t understand”. We do.

The number of African-American kids who perform well at school are overshadowed by the ignant ass behavior of many others who act up daily. Over the years I have had many kids challenge my authority and call me a “MF” to my face without hesitation. African-American kids. I’m 6”3’ and I weigh a solid/

Listening to a child half my size disrespectfully refer to me as a “MF” when I’m trying to instill some knowledge into their little brain is both disheartening and job threatening. But, teachers are supposed to take it. God forbid if we got in their faces and asked them to repeat it while gritting our teeth.

No-siree-bob! (Sometimes, I wanna whup Bob’s little ass). We’re supposed to report it to the front office, and trust me; their hands are tied, too.

Now, if a Black child, who KNOWS that I love him/her cusses my big ass out, just wonder what teachers of other races go through.

(This is one race card they don’t mind me playing). My White coworkers have it worse.

exas Senator John Cornyn wasted no time with U.S. Attorney General designate Loretta Lynch. He asked her pointblank, “How are you going to be different from Eric Holder?” It was not a question. It was a demand. Lynch gave him the requisite answer, “I am not Eric Holder.” That won’t be enough.

The instant President Obama nominated Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Lynch to replace outgoing U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, a core of leading GOP senators and conservative political action groups flatly said they’d do everything possible to block Lynch’s confirmation if she didn’t make it absolutely clear publicly that she would not be another Holder.

Her public mea culpa meant that Lynch would have to virtually repudiate every position and action that Holder took as Attorney General.

The checklist included abandoning continued tough enforcement of what’s left of the Voting Rights Act, few or no probes into police abuse and misconduct cases, a blind eye toward vigorous IRS enforcement of provi-

sions to prevent blatant manipulation of the tax laws by right-wing political groups, rejection of Obama’s amnesty policies, and adopt a compliant role with GOP congressional representatives. Above all, the GOP’s butcher bill for a Lynch confirmation is that she must pledge not to utter a peep about racism and racial iniquities.

Anti-Lynch conservative activist groups covered their outrageous demand for a virtual public disavowal by her of Holder by tossing in a red herring. They claim that Lynch has such a cozy relationship with fat cat Wall Street financiers that she blocked a settlement to victims in a stock fraud scheme.

Lynch has no illusions that anything less than a total distancing from Holder will stall, if not derail, her confirmation. She will say all the right things on police-community relations, making nice with GOP congressional committees, and playing it close to the vest on enforcement of civil rights abuse cases.

The fact that she’s forced to play the role of the Holder antithesis says

less about Lynch than it does about the ruthless determination of GOP congressional leaders to purge any and all residue of Holder’s effective, and much need activist tenure as Attorney General from political life. Holder was piteously hounded every second during his years as Justice Department head. This was no accident. He became the softest of soft target in the GOP’s no-holds-barred campaign to hamstring Obama with the odor of scandal and in effect straightjacket his presidency. The race part was even more insidious. Holder meant what he said that the nation had marched backward for every step it went forward in dealing with racial bias. He backed up his words with repeated actions on voting rights abuses, grotesque racially skewed sentencing disparities, and defense of gay rights. This was crowned by his rush to St. Louis following the slaying of Michael Brown and putting dozens of FBI and Justice Department attorney’s boots on the ground there with the strong hint that a civil rights prosecution could be in the offing if there was no state prosecution

Holder didn’t buckle. He even doubled down again on his blast at racism, noting on several occasions that he, as Michael Brown and countless other young Black males, had been profiled by police once as a law student and later as a federal prosecutor.

‘I’m Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired’ of This White Educational Curriculum Manhood, Race & Culture

A

lthough I rarely need a reminder that the struggle to educate African-American children regarding their ancestors’ history is a worthwhile endeavor, there are moments when even I lose focus and need a reminder for why I must continue down this rocky road. I received a much needed reminder this week.

Recently at the Howard University Middle School of Math and Science, a drama played out that has taken many by surprise; unfortunately, I was neither shocked nor amused by the occurrence.

Sadly, I have found such incidents to be expected when the topic is the need to teach Black children African-American history and culture. Put simply, such endeavors appear to be a taboo in far too many of our nation’s schools, colleges, and universities.

In case you missed the alluded to incident, the Principal of the Howard University Middle School of Math and Science, Angelique Blackmon, an African-American female nonetheless, took significant issue with three social studies teachers who infused AfricanAmerican history into the school’s bland White curriculum that was modeled after the Montgomery County Public School system. Apparently, Principal Blackmon feels that a curriculum that omits the contributions of African-Americans is acceptable.

Fortunately, Principal Blackmon’s position is not being supported by either the student body that she has been appointed to educate or the parents of said children. Shannon Settle, the parent of a child attending the Howard University Middle School of Math and Science vehemently disagrees with the official school policy regarding this matter. Mrs. Settle remarked that “the school administration does not want

the social studies teachers to teach African-American History. We are on the campus of an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). We need to know our culture; the school is ninety-percent African-American.”

While I applaud the parents and the students who have rallied against this obvious injustice, I am also saddened that in 2015 our community is still battling this issue of relevant education for our youth.

As an educator, it saddens me when I enter a classroom full of African-American students, many of whom have excelled throughout their high school years and earned academic scholarships as a due reward for their educational prowess, and they have absolutely no idea of any facet of AfricanAmerican history or culture. I cringe when my students relate that they have never heard of James Baldwin, Countee Cullen, Assata Shakur, Fred Hampton Jr., Anna Julia Cooper, Asa Philip Randolph, or Fannie Lou Hamer.

I know that the souls of my ancestors weep when those sitting before me at a Historically Black University relate that they have read, and are actually wellversed, in classic non-Black literature and historical tomes such as The Republic and The Diary of Anne Frank, yet they have never read a similar text created by African-American authors.

I am amazed that those creating curriculums are ignorant to the fact, or simply do not care, that there are innumerable books that are of greater utility to African-American children’s educational endeavors than a story about a Jewish girl, meaning Anne Frank, hiding during World War II in a desperate attempt to escape the Jewish Holocaust. Most fail to realize that the Jewish Holocaust is neither the only Holocaust to occur, nor is it the most devastating Holocaust, the African Holocaust led to the deaths of far more stolen Africans on both sides of the Atlantic. We Have Been Called Everything!

arcus Garvey once stated that “The Black skin is not a badge of shame, but rather a glorious symbol of national greatness,” and I could not agree with him more.

Now, I have spoken on this element many of times and have written about it quite often as well.

Throughout the origin of AfricanAmericans’ history in the United States of America, we as a race of people have been through many changes and that is of no surprise.

Along with those changes are the mere fact that we have been labeled with a wide range of terms. Though our blood bleeds the color same as other races, nationalities and people of different origins, there has been a need to label us with varying names as the generations have changed.

Now if you were to trace the roots and history of AfricanAmericans since our forefathers’ entrance into these United States, you will find out that we have underwent about four different classifications as it relates to what “term” to associate with a person simply being “Black.”

Now at first we were “Negroes,” the generation after that was “Colored,” following that group was “Black,” and now we are considered “African-Americans.” Now, ain’t that a real Mother for ya?!?

In no way, shape, form or fashion am I making this stuff up. If you don’t believe me, just go do some research and inventory on the subject.

No matter what age group you’re in, look at your birth certificate and then compare it with two or three other people of the same ethnicity but born in different generations, and you can clearly see it for yourself. I don’t make this stuff up!

So in order to give our faithful readers a little history and insight into these various terms that we Africans living in America have

been referred to, I have decided to define each term at an attempt to better help our audience understand these changes. The first term is the word“Negro,” which was used to describe an individual of darkskinned ancestry. The name itself derived from the ancient Latin word, “Niger,” which meant “Black.”

It has been said by some that the term “Negro” superseded the word “Colored” as the most polite word for African-Americans at a time when “Black” was considered more offensive. The term “Colored” began to be less popular during the Civil Rights Era. As history records, “During the American Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960’s, some Black leaders in the United States, like Malcolm X, objected to the word ‘Negro’. This objection was in part because many people associated the word with the long history of slavery, segregation and discrimination that treated Black people as second class citizens.”

The term “Colored” was used to describe Black folks in the years 1910 – 1960. According to Henry Louis Gates, Jr. who was a professor at Harvard University, “Colored people lived in three neighborhoods that were clearly demarcated, as if by ropes or turnstiles.” He also said that “the colored world was not so much a neighborhood as a condition of existence.”

It was this word that was one of the key terms used during the area of segregation. Restaurants, parks, communities, rest rooms and most public places were labeled in with two words which were “White Only” and “Colored.”

Next, there was the term plain old“Black.” According to the United States census of 1970, those individuals residing in the country that were of African descent were referred to as“Black.” The first

time that it was recorded as a word to describe Blacks was noted in 1970. Following the usage of the term “Black,” the term “AfricanAmerican” was introduced onto the scene.

This change was indicated in the 2000 and 2012 United States census. The word was used to describe anyone living in America that was of African descent. So as one may imply from reading this editorial, we Africans living in America have been through a great deal of changes. At this point, I really don’t know what other terms can be left to define us. But, I’m sure there will be another term added to this list in the future. Only time will tell. Nevertheless, we can not just dwell on terms and words that have been made up and used as a means to define or describe us as a race of people.

Addressing the faithful and loyal readers of African-American News& Issues, We MUST Understand that no matter what people call or label you as an individual, it has absolutely nothing to do with the potential that can be achieved within you. Even with all of the changes that our ancestors went through, it had no bearing on them pressing on and pursuing to do those things which they felt were necessary to make it better for those that were to come after them.

So although we have been called everything under the sun, in conclusion I would just like to mirror the words of W.C. Fields who stated that “It ain’t what they call you, it’s what you answer to.”

HOUSTON - According to King Solomon, the third king of Israel, “there is nothing new under the sun,” as recorded in Ecclesiastes 1:9. “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” While many people all over the world assumed that history was made on January 20, 2009, when President Barack Obama was inaugurated into office as what majority of Americans have labeled as the first Black president of the United States of America, the truth is that thought couldn’t be further from the truth.

The thing that many people do not understand is that President Barack Obama is not the first president that has the entitlement of being referred to as “Black,” especially according to the “one-drop rule,” which suggests that any person having a percentage of Black in his or her blood is considered Black.

F. James Davis, a retired professor of Sociology at Illinois State University, defines and explains this rule and theory more in depth in his book entitled Who is Black? One Nation’s Definition.” An excerpt from the book explains that “In the South it became known as the ‘one-drop rule,’ meaning that a single drop of ‘Black blood’ makes a person a Black. It is also known as the ‘one Black ancestor rule,’ some courts have called it the ‘raceable amount rule,’ and anthropologists call it the ‘hypo-descent rule,’ meaning that racially mixed persons are assigned the status of the subordinate group.” Therefore, if we are to uphold the definition according to the United States of America as it relates to who is considered Black, it would mean that in fact President Barack Obama is not the first Black president, but in all actuality he stands as number eight in line, by definition. Throughout this article, we will seek to explore presidents that have preceded him in this stead.

Additionally, not only will the myth of President Obama being the first Black president be dispelled, but so will history as it has been passed down from generation to generation.

the first president of the United States of America, however, the reality is that he is not America’s first president. Truthfully, a man of color was.

The irony within the scenario rests in the fact that George Washington even voted for him along with an overwhelming approval by Congress as a whole. John Hanson was the first president of the United States of America. He served as president for roughly a year during the years 1781 - 1782. He was a Moor, according to historical research. A “Moor” is a term used to describe the color Black.

It does not suggest one’s nationality or historical origin, but it is simply an adjective used to distinguish the color of a person.

The adoption of the Articles of Confederation is what literally formed the United States as a nation.

This establishment came to pass on March 1, 1781. Although they had been proposed and drafted over four years prior, they were not accepted by all states. There was a thought that one state would retain or gain excessive power because of the bounteous supply of land that they obtained, which caused the document to be at a stand still for several years, however, once the states did come to an agreement and the Articles of Confederation were signed, the need for a leader was underway.

Undoubtably, John Hanson had already proved to be a valuable and needed asset for the government due to the previous roles that he had already served. He was a key player in the revolution as well as a member of Congress that carried much weight.

Thus, he was voted in as the first president of the United States, with no opponents even attempting to run against him.

During his tenure as president, he implemented a couple of ordinances upon which the country still operates until this day. As a matter of fact, he was the president to institute Thanksgiving as a national holiday by making a declaration that every fourth Thursday of November be deemed Thanksgiving. He also initiated the mandatory “great seal” of which all presidents that have since succeeded him are bound to use on all official documentation. So why isn’t John Hanson listed as the first president of the United States? Well, with the

implementation of the enslavement period of Africans being forced into bondage, it should be no real surprise that certain facts about history have been left covered. Nonetheless, this is one fact that remains true whether accepted or not and that is the mere fact that the first president of the United States of America was indeed a Black man, according to the nation’s own definition of the term.

Thomas Jefferson Secondly, the third “recorded” president of the United States was also a Black man. Thomas Jefferson’s administration ranged between the years 1801 - 1809. Not only was he a Black man, but he had children with a slave named, Sally Hemings.

Throughout the years, much debate has risen surrounding the argument whether of not President Jefferson fathered children with a slave. Yet, DNA evidence has since unearthed the truth that the president’s genetic traits were directly linked with the children birthed by Sally. To that regard, Jefferson’s own biological inheritance yields results that his mother was an Indian and his father was “mixed” with Black and White.

Ultimately, President Jefferson went down in history as one of the founding fathers. He was also the author of the Declaration of Independence, the document that was signed on July 4, 1776. This date remains as a commemorative holiday that Americans all of the nation recognize and pay homage to, as a symbol of freedom every year.

Andrew Jackson The seventh “noted” president of the United States of America was also a Black man by the name of Andrew Jackson. Serving a eightyear term ranging from 1829 - 1837 was the son of a Black man who had children with a woman from Ireland.

President Jackson was not the only child born from their union, but his father’s other children were sold into slavery. At an early age, he was orphaned but that one fact alone did not leave room for him to sink into a position of despair. Jackson was able to soar through the ranks and make a reputation for himself. He went down in history as the founder of the Democratic party and was known as the “people’s president” and “Old Hickory.” He strongly

believed in individual freedom and was extremely supportive to that cause. His successful defeat of the British in the Battle of New Orleans as a major general made a real name for him. President Jackson provided a great deal of support for the common man and is also the president whose face is imprinted on the United States currency of a $20 bill.

Abraham Lincoln Many Black people reverence President Abraham Lincoln because he signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation was a document that, proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the 10 states that were still in rebellion. While this executive order and decree did not free all the slaves, President Lincoln was the first president to even go out on the limb to at least attempt to offer some form of relief for slaves, regardless of the reasoning or justification.

President Lincoln is “indicated” as the 16th president of the United States which served during the years 1861 -1865. Although it has been rumored that there was a ploy devised by his mother to pass Abraham off as her husband’s son, the truth about his genetical history has been revealed by modern research of DNA evidence.

His mother, who is believed to have been a woman from a tribe in Ethiopia, was having an affair with a slave named Iemis. Testing and correspondence unearthed within the last decade exposes the truth about President Lincoln’s actual bloodline.

Dr. Alan Holdsworth, an anthropologist, explained his findings to the National Geographic magazine.

He said“We managed to attain DNA evidence from a lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair which proves that he had a very strong African genetic link. His chromosome makeup is very specific to West African DNA patterns and this suggests that Abraham’s real father was indeed of African origin.”

Warren Harding President Warren Harding has been “denoted” as the 28th President of the United States. His leadership only covered a two-year period within 1921 - 1923. Nevertheless, he was a president and he was Black.

Unlike many other individuals who attempt to scapegoat their Black heritage and ancestry, Harding embraced

his. He never once denounced the fact that he was Black. Furthermore, he even stood up to Republican leaders who tried to make him deny who he was. To his defense, he rhetorically uttered the expression, “How should I know whether or not one of my ancestors might have jumped the fence?” According to a report on CNN, “William Chancellor, a White professor of economics and politics at Wooster College in Ohio, wrote a book on the Harding family genealogy and identified Black ancestors among both parents of President Harding.” It is alleged that the Department of Justice destroyed all copies of the book. But, Chancellor found that “Harding’s only academic credentials included education at Iberia College, which was founded in order to educate fugitive slaves.”

Calvin Coolidge The “acknowledged” 29th president of the United States was also a Black man by the name of Calvin Coolidge. He served for six years during the time period of 1923 - 1929. His mother was a Black woman. According to the White House’s history of President Coolidge he“demonstrated his determination to preserve the old moral and economic precepts amid the material prosperity which many Americans were enjoying. He refused to use Federal economic power to check the growing boom or to ameliorate the depressed condition of agriculture and certain industries. His first message to Congress in December 1923 called for isolation in foreign policy, and for tax cuts, economy, and limited aid to farmers.”

Dwight E. Eisenhower Lastly, the 33rd “recognized” president of the United States, Dwight Eisenhower, was a Black man, according to the “one-drop rule.” He served from 1953 - 1961 and his mother was a half Black woman by the name of Elizabeth Stover Eisenhower. President Eisenhower’s Black ancestry was used against him by opponents during his era. Not much is known about his mother’s family or her, except for the fact that her parents are listed as “unknown.”

FBISD Spotlighting Campuses Named After Notable African-Americans

FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD joins the nation in celebrating the many accomplishments and contributions of African-Americans to our society during Black History Month.

African American history makers, both past and present, have made a great impact in education, government, medicine, music, sports, and other walks of life.

In Fort Bend ISD, we are proud to have several of our schools/facilities named after notable AfricanAmericans who have made lasting impressions on our lives both nationally and locally. Among them are: Thurgood Marshall High School

Thurgood Marshall was an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, from 1967 to 1991, and was the Court’s 96th justice and first African-American Justice.

Ferndell Henry Center for Learning

Ferndell Henry was a Fort Bend ISD graduate who later became a teacher in the District, serving at Dulles, Clements and Kempner High Schools. Throughout his teaching career, he positively influenced many students with his caring, honest nature.

Billy Baines Middle School Billy Baines was named principal of Arcola Elementary School in 1959 after Missouri City School District and Sugar Land School District merged to become Fort Bend Independent School District. Baines became the first African-American principal named in the newly formed FBISD and went on to serve in several leadership roles before retiring in 1990.

Lynn Armstrong Elementary School A dedicated educator in Fort Bend ISD for 22 years, Dr. Lynn Armstrong touched the lives of many students while serving as a teacher, Special Education Department Chair, assistant principal, associate principal and principal at FBISD schools.

Walter Moses Burton Elementary School

Edgar Glover Elementary School Edgar Glover, Jr. served as the principal of Willowridge High School from 1982 until his death in 1993.

For a short period in the late 1980’s, he also served as acting principal of the neighboring McAuliffe Middle School, splitting his day between both campuses. His caring nature, devotion to students and staff, and support of parents and the community earned him the respect of all who knew him.

An educator for 41 years, Lula Belle Goodman touched the lives of many children throughout our community having taught at St. John’s School in Dewalt, the Oak Lane School in Arcola, New Hope School in Stafford, and M.R. Wood Center for Learning and Lakeview Elementary in Sugar Land.

Walter Moses Burton was elected Fort Bend County Sheriff and Tax Collector in 1869, and in 1874 was elected to the Texas Senate representing the 17th district. He was the only African-American in Texas history to serve as senator for four terms.

FBISD students and staff will celebrate Black History Month by hosting various events, activities and programs. Goodman Elementary School will host a Founders Day event on February 10 honoring their school’s namesake, Lula Belle Goodman.

On February 13, Parks Elementary School will welcome Urana Jean McCauley, the niece of Civil Rights Activist Rosa Louise McCauley Parks, who will speak to students about her experiences growing up with Parks. Throughout the month, M.R. Wood Center for Learning teachers will chronicle the original school’s rich history from 1912 to 1965 through hallway exhibits.

4 TIPS TO PROTECTING YOUR COMPANY'S CULTURAL INTEGRITY

HOUSTON - References to culture used to be confined to business textbooks, and although it is required reading in the classroom, culture never seems to command as much attention as business strategy, guerilla marketing or process improvement in practice. But recently, news stories have been saturated with references to culture.

We are confronted with disturbing allegations and reports that the NFL has a culture that condones domestic abuse — where winning games is more important than holding players accountable for criminal conduct — that U.S. colleges share a culture that places the marketability of the college above the safety and well-being of female students and that law enforcement agencies have a culture that condones the use of deadly force against citizens they are sworn to protect.

Each of these examples illustrates that culture plays a powerful role in dictating what people believe and whether they are likely to observe the culturally mandated rules for acceptable conduct.

No one would argue that the culture of the NFL should focus the efforts of the players and the coaches in an all-out effort to win every game.

Business success depends on winning. We expect colleges and universities with excellent reputations to be excellent and to strive to promote the quality of education that every student will receive if enrolled there. And we want our law enforcement officers to be tough enough to confront and corral those who are violating laws and are compromising the safety of law-abiding citizens.

All of those cultural norms are essentially good.

The lesson to be learned here is that to preserve all that is good about a culture, there must be a consistent effort to impose consequences on those who fail to comply with culturally mandated conduct.

Rules have no impact when there is no accountability for infractions of the rules.

The real measure of leadership occurs when enforcing the rules can be difficult and costly — like sidelining a star player when doing so may place a winning season at risk — or terminating a police officer in an open admission that there are law enforcement officers who violate the law. Those are the tough judgment calls leaders are expected to make.

When tough decisions are made well, it sends a message to every individual in the organization that rules are important. When leaders side-step their responsibilities or look the other way, that also sends a message, and the integrity of the culture is diminished.

The following best practices will help preserve a culture of integrity: Conduct pre-employment background checks on all job applicants.

Include compliance with the rules in the criteria for formal performance appraisals.

Conduct periodic surveys soliciting employee feedback regarding compliance with critical policies and procedures.

In creating recognition and reward programs, include recognition and rewards for consistent compliance with rules and procedures.

Back to the Basics With Women: “Remembering Where We Come From”

Blessedness, strength and independence in the Black woman did not just begin in the formation of the United States of America. Instead, these assets date much further back to a time in history that records the very existence of man’s being, to those that believe (the Holy Bible).

According to that creation, the Garden of Eden, which is where the Bible indicates man’s origination was formed, was near the land of Ethiopia. Genesis 2:13 states “the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.” With that being stated allow me to go“Back to the Basics” as I present a few of the Black women that are mentioned in the Bible.

The first five books of the Bible were penned by Moses, who has been regarded as the lawgiver. He wrote Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, also known as the books of “Torah” and “Pentateuch” by their Hebrew and Greek names respectively.

This great leader married the daughter of the priest of Midian (Jethro). Her name was Zipporah and she was a Black woman. As discrimination is prevalent in today’s society, we must understand that it did not just start. Moses suffered ridicule by his own family members for marrying this woman of Ethiopian descent, yet, that humiliation did not go unnoticed. God himself reigned down vengeance in her stead. Numbers 12:1 shows that“Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married...” but verses later the scripture declares that this act was not pleasant in God’s eyesight. Scriptures further state that “And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them; and he departed.

And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous,” in Numbers 12:9-10. Miriam and Aaron were Moses’ siblings, and the same person that they sought to come up against, was the very one that had to intercede to God on their behalf. While there TX-8

remain many lessons in this scenario, one that relates to the Black community is to not talk about a blessed woman of God. The founding father of faith, Abraham, had a son named Isaac, who bore two sons Esau and Jacob. Jacob was the son that birthed the Israelite race.

Jacob had 12 sons and the second to the youngest, Joseph, became his favorite child, so much so that he made him a coat of many colors. Due to the relationship and favour that was shown to him, his older brothers envied him. This envy resulted in them selling their younger brother into slavery. Although it was mean and cruel, as the songwriter wrote, “What the Devil meant for bad, God uses for good.” This was evident in the fact that the iniquity of envy that overtook Joseph’s brothers eventually spared the entire household of Jacob (Israel) years down the road. The purpose of this brief insight is to introduce another Black woman recorded in the Bible, the wife of Joseph. Her name was Asenath and she was the daughter of an African priest.

She was named after the Greek goddess Minerva. Joseph saved his virginity for this African princess and they had two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who are named among the tribes of Israel (Genesis 41:45).

For many years, Black women have been portrayed as beautifully designed sexual creatures. This origin is one that has a rich history, even in the eyes of one of the world’s wisest men. King Solomon wrote about his fascinating and enchanting love for the Black woman.

This encounter with a woman who is called Shulamite is described in Song of Solomon 1:5-6 “I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.

Look not upon me, because I am Black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.”

This element is not one that should be viewed in a derogatory nature, but should

serve as an uplifting and motivating factor to the Black woman. After all, if any man was worthy to delineate the unique attributes of a ravishing woman, then certainly a lover of women such as Solomon is. Solomon was said to have 700 wives and 300 concubines, of which majority of them were women of a dark descent.

Some researchers have suggested that this attraction could have been brought on by the revelation that his mother Bathsheba (a Gilonite) could have also been a woman of color.

However, the Shulamite was not Solomon’s only recorded dark-skinned lover. The first time that the term “queen” was used was in the Bible was in reference to a Black woman. The infamous and wise African Queen of Sheba (Makeda) and Solomon had a sexual affair that produced descendants which reigned in Ethiopia as late as 1975. This queen traveled afar to see the untold fortunes and fame of Solomon. Her journey was portrayed in II Chronicles 9:1 as it states that“And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.” After viewing all of the glory of King Solomon, Queen Makeda concluded that“the half was not told” in I Kings 10:7. Though Solomon led quite a reputation himself, the Queen of Sheba’s wisdom and fame was spread even up until centuries after her death. Jesus Christ regarded her in the gospels. He said, “The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here” in St. Luke 11:31.

allow all of their stories to be told here.

Accordingly, I would just like to present one of the most powerful and intelligent Black women recorded in scripture, Jael.

She went down in Biblical history as the woman who won a war with a hammer and a nail. It was from her act of bravery that the word “sissy” was incorporated into humanity’s vocabulary. Judges 4:18-21 reveals that“Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him with a mantle. And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.Again he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and enquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? That thou shalt say, No. Then Jael Heber’s wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary.

So he died.”

FORT WORTH – Recently, the African-American Health Expo’s Health Equity in Action, which is a Tarrant County Community Resource Expo hosted a 2015 Kickoff Event. The event took place at the Moncrief Cancer Institute located at 400 W. Magnolia Ave., 76104.

Various health care professionals all came together to share the event. The African-American Health Equity in Action event was just a prelude to the 2015 African-American Health Expo scheduled to take place on March 28 at the Forest Hill Convention Center located at 6901 Wichita St, Forest Hill, TX 76140.

is non-profit agency that specializes in: providing prevention, survivorship and support services that are so important to defeating cancer and limiting its impact on individuals quality of life. Moncrief is an affiliate of the UT Southwestern Harold C. Simmons Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute designated cancer center in North Texas. Through the generosity of the Moncrief family, the institute has been working collaboratively with area physicians, agencies and hospitals since 1958.

AUSTIN – As the complaints about the state’s TxTag program continue to roll in, the department is getting answers for the first time from the very top of the state’s Department of Transportation. Hundreds of Texans have reached out regarding the long wait times, busy signals and trouble accessing account information online while trying to resolve TxTag billing problems. The transportation department recently penalized Xerox, the company contracted to operate the toll road, nearly $177,000 for system failures.

TxDOT added Xerox now faces additional penalties of hundreds of thousands of dollars or more for its failure to meet contractual and performance obligations. In a recent statement, Xerox said that, “Xerox continues to work diligently to address transition processing issues related to the data, which includes an unusually large amount of aged data that was handled by the previous TxDOT vendor. The delay in billing is part of the conversion to a single account structure – no more separate bills (TxTag, payby-mail, violation) for the same vehicle. The temporary delay will have long-term benefits as all transactions will be posted to a single statement/invoice. Xerox has hired more than one hundred people to alleviate the wait time customers are experiencing.”

AUSTIN - Sitting behind pictures of loved ones killed in crashes, 15 Texas families tearfully pleaded with lawmakers to support a statewide textingwhile-driving ban. Alex Brown is who the proposed ban is named.

Alex Brown died at the age of 17 in 2007, when she crashed while texting and driving on the way to her West Texas high school.

The Alex Brown Memorial Act would prohibit motorists from using a wireless device to read, write or send a text message while driving unless the vehicle is stopped and outside of traffic lanes. Offenses would constitute Class C misdemeanors, punishable by fines ranging from $25 to $200.

Texas Round-Up BEAUMONT – Beaumont’s elderly population could be getting more affordable housing if a developer can qualify for tax credits that would help to pay for construction of an apartment project to be called Place of Grace near Sarah Street and Fannett Road. City Council on Tuesday approved the plan for Itex Development to apply to a state agency for the competitive tax credits, which will be awarded in late July. Itex specializes in building properties using the tax credits. A project called “Providence” is about three months away from completion on Major Drive near Boys Haven. It will have 128 apartment units, most of which will be reserved for individuals who are 55 or older and are income-qualified to pay affordable rents. A typical rent could be $550. Council also approved a resolution for a competing project called “Heritage House,” slated for 6300 Phelan Blvd. The applicant is NuRock Companies in Dallas. It would have 118 units, 99 of which would be reserved for seniors.

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation will soon have a new leader at the helm. Iain Vasey was announced recently as the incoming president and CEO. He will take the helm in March, according to a news release. Roland Mower previously held the position for several years. Vasey has spent the past five years serving as the executive director of Business Development for the Baton Rouge Area Chamber.

That role included spearheading economic development, business attraction, and business retention efforts for the 9-parish capital region of Louisiana.

DALLAS - As the 38thAnnual Legislative Conference of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) came to Dallas in mid-December 2014, one of America’s most pressing issues was and still is the treatment of Black people by law enforcement, which was recently brought to a boiling point by the police murders of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and 12-year-old Tamir Rice. It was only befitting that the NBCSL whose theme for the conference was “Preparing Our Nation’s Leaders” also focused on creating solutions aimed at this massive scourge in the country in addition to actively addressing current legislative issues in our communities.

DALLAS - The City of Dallas and ParkMe announce the launch of a new app that will help drivers find, secure and pay for available parking. The new app is free to download and is available on iOS, Android and Window phones. Features of the app include limited real-time parking availability, direct routing to parking garage entry points, a parking rate calculator helping drivers find the cheapest option, and a timer that alerts drivers when it’s time to move their vehicle. The application also links to the PayByPhone service, which allows drivers to pay for metered parking. “Creating a user-friendly, easily navigable experience when parking Downtown is key. The ParkMe system achieves many goals outlined in the ‘Reform the approach to parking’ strategy of the Downtown Dallas 360 plan, including leveraging technology to improve consumers’ familiarity with Downtown. GALVESTON - A proposal to abolish the Department of Justice Administration that would redefine management of the county’s court system will be discussed in a commissioners workshop today. The plan would disband the Department of Justice Administration, which manages the county’s courts, and the Galveston County Pertrial Release Board to form a new entity overseen by the commissioners themselves.

JASPER - Jasper County Sheriff’s Department Communications Director Laura Moore was named Citizen of the Year on Friday evening at the 96th Annual Chairman’s Banquet of the Jasper Lake Sam Rayburn Chamber of Commerce. The event was held in the Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church in downtown Jasper, and this year’s theme was “Jasper Proud”.

KILGORE - The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and Samsung Austin Semiconductor invite K-5th grade students in Texas to submit artwork showing how they help keep the air and water clean, conserve water and energy, and reduce waste. Fifteen students and one teacher will each win a Samsung tablet, and one grand prize winner will receive a Samsung laptop. The winning pieces will be showcased on the Take Care of Texas and TCEQ websites, newsletters, and social media. Entries must be two-dimensional, but can be created with any media, including crayons, watercolor, markers, paints, and color pencils. Winners will be announced April 3.

NAVASOTA - Navasota ISD Board of Trustees has charged administrators with seeking plans for reconfiguration of two campuses. Reconstitution has also called for the removal of a longtime principal. This past fall, John C. Webb Elementary became the second campus that was ordered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to undertake reconstitution.

SAN ANTONIO - Rebecca Bridges Dinnin, vice president of image and communications with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, has been appointed director of the Alamo, the Texas General Land Office recently announced. Land Commissioner George P. Bush, who assumed office Jan. 2, said Dinnin will be responsible for the “strategic leadership of the Alamo, and I believe her expertise in communications, capital fundraising, tourism promotion and management will serve her well in this exciting and challenging new role.”

After a brief meeting, negotiators for the United Steelworkers Union and Royal Dutch Shell returned to the negotiating table. Shell is representing the country’s oil companies in negotiating a new three-year national oil workers contract. The USW represents about 30,000 workers at 63 facilities across the country. Those facilities account for about twothirds of the nation’s oil refining capacity.
