Educator Training Opportunities

Comprehensive offerings in afterschool professional development were showcased by the Center for Afterschool, Summer and Enrichment for Kids, or CASE for Kids. The online and live workshops were promoted during Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week, from April 25-29.

“We’re committed to strengthening the skills of those working in the afterschool profession,” said Lisa ThompsonCaruthers, director of CASE for Kids. “As an outgrowth of this commitment, we offer extensive professional opportunities throughout the year to support out-of-school time professionals.”

CASE for Kids is an afterschool intermediary which provides funding, professional development and networking for the local out-of-school time community. Funds support students in grades pre-k through 12 in afterschool programs in schools, child care facilities and community centers. Services benefit approximately 12,000 kids in greater Harris County.

“Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week, a first-time national awareness-raising event, gives us the opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of our local afterschool professionals,” Thompson-Caruthers said.

Nationwide, an estimated 850,000 professionals work with the 10.2 million children who participate in afterschool programs each year. Afterschool offers an extension of the school day to enrich academics, broaden hobbies and explore career possibilities. Training for afterschool professionals helps enhance the benefits of out-of-school time.

copy. The premise of the film is relatively simple in that Queen Latifah’s character --- Georgia Byrd --- is given a dire medical prognosis that gives her only a few weeks to live. It is this information that causes Latifah to begin living life in a manner that she should have always been living; courageously, carefree, and as if there was no tomorrow.

I began to wonder what would I do if I only had two weeks to live?

What are my priorities?

What is important enough for me to spend my precious time

upon? Who would I visit? Who would I call? What television shows would I watch, if any?

What would I read? What would be my regrets?

One thing is certain, if faced with such a dilemma, much of the foolishness that we witness on a daily basis from African-American men would cease if for no other reason than them finally gaining an understanding of the old axiom, “The only thing that God ain’t making no more of is, TIME!” Make no mistake about it; time is precious, fleeting, and

Before I Lay it Down...

I never cease to amaze myself.

Just when I thought I knew me well, something happens to surprise me some mo. Just the other week I spent several days helping flood-ravaged victims find some relief. I was proud of that and I wish I could’ve done more, but that was pretty amazing, I’m told. I never looked at it that way, but others did. Sometimes, I can’t believe how calm I am when adversity strikes, but I guess it’s because I’ve experienced adversity myself. Often, I can’t believe how positive I can be; that too, can be attributed to my outlook on life. I like being around people who are positive because negativity pisses me off. There’s nothing more agonizing then hearing people complain all the damn time, however, there’s always a reason they do. I still listen though, knowing that lessons can be learned even in the most difficult of times.

Now, this may sound like a bunch of babbling; I just don’t know. I’m still trying to figure me out.

I wish I knew me better because sometimes I’ll say some things that will make people quiver. I guess it’s because I like seeing how people react to different statements. But, it’s also why I decided to cut down on cussing a little bit; well actually it’s because my sisters get on me about that. I remember a time when I didn’t say a single cuss word ever.

That was when I was 100% saved.

But, some of you bastards have caused me to backslide down to the 90% salvation-level seeing how ya’ll act sometimes. When I go to church, I don’t like people “shouting” on my church shoes. Just because you’re under the “anointing” doesn’t give you the right to trample people while you’re getting yo praise on. Don’t do that. I’ll be watching you mo carefully from here on out.

I wish I knew me better because there are parts of me who’s willing to give you the shirt off of my back while there are other parts of me who won’t give you ish! I’m working on that. Sometimes I get into one of my

unrecoverable.

I would like to think that knowledge that death was around the corner would cause many African-American men who have desperately needed to clean up and straighten up. I am certain that they would find their way home to those they love, particularly their children, they would take every opportunity to tell those that they love, “I Love You” as they understand that man’s days on earth are but a few short, yet unbelievably precious, moments.

If I could, I would advise

every Black man in America to live as if he only has two weeks to live. I am quitex certain that it would markedly change not only your life, but also the lives of those around you for the better.

Gemini moods and Julle just looks at me like I’m stoopid or something.

That’s when she remembers that I’m only “90%” saved and she doesn’t say too much. She just leaves me “B”. (What does “B” mean?) I’m confused sometimes when I try to figure out what’s going on politically.

You got a guy who wants to build a big-ass fence to keep Mexicans out of our country and who also wants to keep track of the where-abouts of all Muslims. He offends women and makes fun of mentally-challenged people, yet he’s the Republican Party’s soon-to-be nominee for president of these United States. I wish I knew me better because I don’t what I’d do if we’d ever cross paths. I might just give him a ass-whupping for the ages.

I guess I know me well enough to wish I knew me better. That means that I have some more work to do in finding out who I really am. That also means I’m a “work in progress”. I don’t know if I’m a better person than I was yesterday, but I think I am. I assume that can be considered a slight improvement; I don’t keep quantitative data on such things. I just base it on how many cuss words I used the day before. If

I used less today, that’s an improvement. It’s the little things that count.

In closing, I think you guys need to know yourselves a little better, too. Some of y’all will discover that you’re a little “special”. You might amaze yo’self. If you don’t pick up on that, however, make sho that you don’t go shouting on my church shoes. Remember, I just cut down on my cussing. God bless, goodnight, and keep yo families together.

WELCOME TO THE BLACK LEADERSHIP 5-RING-CIRCUS:

One of my absolute favorite quotes by our dear Brother Malcolm X is his characterization of ‘The March on Washington’ as “a circus, with clowns and all.”

I have always found humor in Malcolm’s summation of ‘The March on Washington’ because it conveys how flustered and frustrated our dear brother must have been at witnessing his people mobilize once again to beg white folk for something that they truly could have done for themselves.

Although I make humor of this moment, the truth of the matter is that there really isn’t much humor to be found in what appears to be a habitual pattern of Black leaders leading their people astray.

Unfortunately for today’s AfricanAmerican community, if the March on Washington could be characterized as “a circus with clowns and all,” today’s ‘movement’ should be termed a 5-ring-circus with every type of irreconcilable, illogical, contradictory, immoral, and half-baked scheme and thought known to man. Things within the movement have gotten so bad that activists have often been forced to turn upon those that they previously considered friends, if not family, and denounce their beliefs, statements, and actions, in a last-ditch effort to salvage what parts of their organization that they could.

If one could term the current status of the movement to be a circus, there is no doubt that Dr. Umar Johnson is positioned as its foremost ringleader.

Dr. Umar Johnson is the self-appointed Popa (Prince of Pan-Africanism) of the movement, an intra-racial polarizing figure. The mere mentioning of his name elicits moans-and-groans from veteran activists. For example, many have alleged that this is only the latest alias or maybe it would be more appropriate to say manifestation of this

brother.

Make no mistake about it, everything about Dr. Umar Johnson from his academic credentials, ancestry (his claim to be a descendant of Abolitionist Frederick Douglass) to his prodigious fundraising abilities for a yet to be formed school (Frederick Douglass – Marcus Garvey – RBG International Leadership Academy) for African-American males has proven to be divisive with the ‘movement’; there quite simply no middle-ground to be found when dealing with Johnson.

What makes this voluminous discord flowing from the personage of Dr. Umar Johnson particularly disconcerting is the fact that it is unlike previous discord between figures such as Anna Julia Cooper and Booker T. Washington, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois, W.E.B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in that it is not based upon politico economic disagreement or discord. Anyone who has studied Black America’s repeated attempts to emerge from the sorry plight that our people have so often found themselves will tell you, there has never been consensus regarding the ideological path to liberation among Black leaders, often-times there was an absence of consensus in regards to the ultimate goal of the movement as some pressed for separation, others for integration, and a few others unwisely pursued assimilation.

I point this out to reiterate the point that this latest manifestation of what Malcolm X termed Black America’s ‘circus with clowns and all’ is grounded in other things and matters that should never occur within any movement or be projected by the authentic leader of any people.

! Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated ~ Calvin Coolidge derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

WAR HAS JUST BEEN DECLARED

Although it is incredible to think this, I am certain that the vast majority of our community failed to notice that a disgruntled element of white society has declared war upon all who fail to measure up to their definition of what America has historically been about and should be about into the future.

The alluded to population believe that the ‘standard American’ is a white person possessing ‘conservative’ values and a unshakable belief that this nation was founded by white men to serve the interests of white people politically, economically, and socially. Put simply, from their perspective, America has been, is, and always will be a ‘white man’s’ land. Most troubling for those who do not fit either the physical description or agree with their white supremacy political philosophy is the fact that whites have decided to deal with our kind in the strongest possible terms; that being, throwing their political weight behind billionaire real estate developer Donald Trump.

Make no mistake about it, Trump’s triumph in the Republican Primary should frighten not only sensible Americans, but also all persons who reside on Earth.

I am absolutely certain that if African-Americans do not rally politically in the face of Donald Trump winning the Republican nomination, he may very well be President Barack Hussein Obama’s next President.

Now is most certainly not the time for the African-American community to doubt the real possibility that Donald Trump could soon be sitting in the Oval Office.

The events and vocal supporters that have helped the polarizing Presidential hopeful achieve what many political experts thought was impossible should be reason

enough for the African-American community to be concerned.

It most certainly does not take much intelligence to realize that the average Trump supporter is equal parts poorly educated and not only angry about their present station in life, but also eager to blame someone for their economic misery.

Most Trump supporters have reasoned that other groups have gotten ahead of them in the game of life via government handouts.

Making this situation more terrible and frightening than usual is that even when they are presented with evidence that contradicts these thoughts, they inexplicably become more defiant in their battle armor of ignorance and anger.

I must tell you that the rise of Donald Trump’s supporters are a particularly daunting phenomenon that is in many way the price that this nation is going to pay for spending millions of dollars on foreign wars instead of schools and education. Today is the day that most sensible people feared would occur if American companies continued their despicable pattern of sending manufacturing jobs overseas for no other reason than increasing their profit-margin, a decision I might add occurred with absolutely no regard for how the decision would impact the millions of American workers whose sturdy backs and work ethic should be thanked by American elites. It is a significant portion of this American workforce, especially many displaced white laborers, who learned from their parents that a hard day’s work was the only path out of poverty, that Trump’s message of ‘Let’s Make America Great Again’ has most resonated with.

determined to do something drastic to ‘right the ship’. Unfortunately, poor uneducated whites have historically been susceptible to being fooled into agreeing with illogical explanations for their poverty such as: ‘the Blacks are getting all of the jobs’, ‘the Mexicans are taking all of our jobs’, ‘we need to build a wall to prevent the illegal immigrants from coming here and taking all of the work.’ I am certain that you see a pattern here.

Indicative of their inability to think about such matters in a nonkindergarten way, poor uneducated whites have historically been a gullible lot willing to follow any leader, regardless of how immoral and racist, that speaks to not only their pain, but also provides a simpleton solution to their economic problems.

What we are seeing right now with poor whites championing Donald Trump is no different from the fury that led German citizens to support not only Adolph Hitler’s explanation for why Germany was so poor, but also his solution to their misery.

Make no mistake about it, Donald Trump’s rise as a legitimate political figure should not only frighten African-Americans, but also lead them to become politically organized at a level that will shock the entire nation. Failure to do such may very well place our future in Donald Trump’s hands and trust me when I say, that is most definitely not a good thing.

SPRING - At 14, Tatyanna Penrice is not your ordinary middle school student, but an entrepreneur as well. She founded Monet’s Closet all by herself. Loving to sew, which plays a huge role in her business because she creates and designs pillows. Although she is young, Tatyanna doesn’t let her youth affect her business. She is very talented, motivated, and determined to reach the goals she has set for herself and her business.

Tatyanna has been sewing for about five years now. She learned how to sew by taking classes at Hobby Lobby, and started making pillows for some of her family members as presents. This quickly turned into a business.

“People enjoyed my pillows, and thought they were nice and cute. They put in orders and I just started Monet’s Closet”, stated Penrice.

Some businesses take a long time to launch, but Tatyanna’s business only took a week.

Debuting in October of 2015, her business launched at an expo that one of her mother’s friends invited her to. She was asked if she wanted to set up a booth at this expo, and only had one week to get everything together.

Even though college is a little ways off, Tatyanna plans to attend college in either Paris, New York, and California to study fashion in order to become a fashion designer.

Fashion is her passion, and it is one avenue she uses to express herself. “My favorite part about being a fashion designer is the fact that you can create different styles and looks”, expressed Penrice.

As a young person, she knew she had a love for fashion, as she would always sketch out different designs. She is always creating and designing something new. When it comes to her pillows, these are not just your ordinary pillows. Tatyanna adds personality, style, and creativity to each pillow; which allows every pillow to be unique in its own way.

Her pillows are handmade, come in different sizes, and are customizable upon the customer’s request. The pillow’s designs range from sports teams, cartoon characters, Greek letters, seasonal occasions and holidays. With her designs, customers can get whatever it is

they would like for her to create. Her goal is to “capture life’s moments on a pillow.”

One of her new designs will be created on canvas fabric. She plans to draw and paint faces of people on the fabric. She also has multimedia pillows that have different elements such as yarn, buttons, and different pieces of fabrics. One of her favorite role models that she looks up to is Hayden Williams, who is a fashion designer and illustrator.

Many famous celebrities have recognized him.

Tatyanna finds inspiration in his illustrations, and often uses that inspiration to create her own designs.

Not only does she design and create pillows, but she also makes afro-bands. These

Although the focus is on cooking, she will still be able to work on her designs through culinary arts. Not every student who applies to this school gets accepted. Tatyanna is excited about her future at this high school.

Tatyanna is a person who is extremely motivated. She is young, and has a lot of room to grow. She is organized, determined, possess great time management, and is focused on what she needs to do in order to continue to run a successful business. One of the greatest qualities about Tatyanna is that she saves her own money to buy her own products and materials for her business. Furthermore, she is constantly educating herself by taking different classes in order to learn and better her craft.

Tatyanna is not alone with her business as she has the biggest support coming from her mom and family. Her mom, Ashly Thompson stated, “As a mother, I’m very proud of her drive and determination. I’m proud of all of her accomplishments with school as well as her business. We expect nothing but the best from her, but she shows us nothing but the best.” Tatyanna is a person you want to lookout for. When Tatyanna is not creating pillows, she is taking care of business in the classroom. Even though she is a business owner, her education comes first. She manages a successful business, and still maintains good grades. In order to make good use of her time, she often does her homework on the bus ride home from school to allow time after school to work on her craft. Recently, Tatyanna was one of the recipients of The Houston Village Foundation Young Kings and Queens Humanitarian Award. She won this award due to her academic achievements, volunteer work, and for Monet’s Closet.

She is always giving back to her community by volunteering at different events, and at her church.

Brothers Renovating Adolescence & Creating Heroes

HOUSTON - Six young African American men have teamed up to share one common goal, mentoring our youth. Brothers Renovating Adolescence & Creating Heroes (B.R.A.N.C.H.) is a non-profit organization created by Royce Abdalla Jr., Richard Boone, Markus Flentroy, Darrell Nunn Jr., Dewan Clayborn, and Paul McGee. All of these young men are very educated having received degrees from Sam Houston State University and the University of Central Arkansas.

Even though the idea for this organization has been a big dream in the making, they finally launched their dream officially on December 7th, 2015. This organization is directed towards helping students who come from impoverished neighborhoods, who are at risk of incarceration, and who suffer from the challenges of trying to get into college, and furthermore, those who are trying to graduate.

Their organization takes these young kids under their wings, and provides them with a mentor that will help them walk through life’s journey. Giving God all of the credit, their motivation comes from the foundation of the bible verse John 15:5, which states, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.”

Thriving from the spirit of this verse, inspired them to want to give back to their community, and reach out to at-risk students helping direct them to stay on the right path in life. Richard Boone expressed how it was his grandmother who raised him. Even though she did a great job of raising him, there were still some things that she couldn’t

teach him in life. He stated, “I didn’t have the resources or outlets to set up going to college, or even having someone just to talk to. So we thought, how can we give back to at-risk students and doing something we love, and be able to put them on a better path.” These men want to be role models for these kids to look up to; someone they can count on. “Growing up, our heroes that we looked up to, were always on T.V., they were too far away to reach, so to be able to be a positive role model for these children, its just a good feeling to know that we can be those people that they can come to no matter what”, stated Markus Flentroy. No support, and a lack of leadership are just a few things that are hindering our youth from becoming better people. B.R.A.N.C.H. provides the support that young people can depend on, and seek help to reach their fullest potential.

The overall mission of this organization is to “change kids lives, change their perspective in how they think about things, the way they actually perceive the world, their limits, goals and success. Everything starts within,

and it’s just a projection outwards to what your life is”, stated Paul McGee. The organization made it known that they want to help change and shape the mindset of these young people.

Everything begins with a thought, and they want to help change their thought patterns, and the way they see things for the better.

Some of their long-term goals are to be instilled in every school and juvenile department, and to represent change. They want to reach the youth in order to improve graduation rates for high school and college, and get as many young people out of the system as possible. If they can reach one person, then that one person can be a voice to others. It only takes one

person to change the world.

Understanding the Law: Landlord/ Tenant, Mold Infestation

In the past few weeks there has been a bout of excessive rain and flooding in the Houston area. Overall, Houston is known to have high levels of humidity and frequent heavy rain. As a result, many homes and apartments in the Houston area foster the perfect environment for mold to grow.

If you are renting or leasing a home and you have discovered a substance that appears to be mold, it is the responsibility of the landlord to make necessary repairs to remedy the issue.

According to, Section 92.056 of the Texas Property Code, “a landlord is liable to a tenant if the tenant has given the landlord notice to repair or remedy a condition, the condition materially affects the physical health or safety of an ordinary tenant, the landlord is given a reasonable time to repair or remedy the condition after receiving notice, and the landlord has not made a diligent effort to repair or remedy the condition after receiving notice”.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK MOLD IS IN YOUR RESIDENCE? NOTIFY THE

LANDLORD IN WRITING: Notify your landlord in writing that you have discovered a mold like substance that needs to be inspected and remediated. Specify a number of days the landlord has to take initial action to make repairs. Under Texas law, seven (7) days is presumed to be a reasonable amount of time.

HAVE MOLD INSPECTED AND TESTED: Although, you have made a maintenance request to the landlord, employ an independent company to come into your home and inspect the affected areas and test the mold. There are several types of mold spores; some of them can be very detrimental to the health. It is best to know what type of mold is in your home and the health risks associated with that type of mold.

MONITOR THE METHOD OF REPAIRS: Often times, Landlords fail to adequately remediate the affected areas. I have heard first hand of landlords attempting to spray bleach on mold as a method of remedying the issue. I have

even heard of landlords attempting to paint over the mold in an attempt to conceal the mold. If you find that your landlord has failed to make a diligent effort to remedy the issue, you may be entitled to several remedies, such as: vacating the premises and terminating the lease, making needed repairs and deducting expenses from the rent, or filing an action against the landlord to make needed repairs.

PRAIRIE VIEW - In honor of Nurses Week, Let’s Celebrate African-American Nurses! These men and women work hard daily to ensure your family and friends are receiving excellent and quality health care.

Ever since Mary Eliza Mahoney became the first African-American Registered Nurse in 1879, nurses have continued to make strides within this health care profession. Whether you were a patient in a hospital/ clinic or a nursing student at a Historically Black College/ University (HBCU), you have

most likely had some interactions with an African-American nurse. African American nurses are employed in every aspect of health care, such as hospitals, clinics, schools, governmental agencies, and hospices. In addition, they have also advanced in education by earning Masters and Doctoral degrees in nursing. This allows them to work in advanced practice nurse positions, such as Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Midwives, Nurse Anesthetists, and Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Nursing continues to be an evolving profession. Today, the

role of the African-American nurse has progressed from being “just a job” to a well-respected career. As a professional nurse, African-American nurses have career mobility, job security, flexible schedules, and competitive salaries.

In addition to the career, there are also many non-profit organizations formed by AfricanAmerican nurses to ensure that African American nurses continue to have a voice in health care.

One organization is the National Black Nurses Association. This organization focuses on health policies, advocacy, and professional advancement of African-

HOUSTON - An anonymous quote stated, “When you’re a nurse, you know that everyday you will touch a life, or a life will touch yours.” It may seem at times that doctors receive a lot of the credit for what takes place in healthcare; however, nurses play a huge role not only inside the medical atmosphere, but outside of it as well. In an interview with Ms. Sharon Mathis, MBA , RN, BSN, FIBA, SMQT, she stated, “it’s great to be a nurse if you’re an individual who loves helping others, and caring, and coordinating.” Mathis is an experienced nurse, who is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University. She has a varied background that ranges from being a caregiver to being an executive, and is also a published author of the book The Healthcare Facility Locator, which helps families choose a healthcare facility for their loved ones. There are many things that nurses do, and they are often not recognized for it. Many take nurses for granted, and do not realize the vital roles that nurses perform daily in the healthcare field.

When speaking with Mathis, she spoke

about a lot of the obstacles and challenges that many nurses face day in and day out. One of those challenges being that nurses make a lot of personal sacrifices due to varied shifts, working on holidays, and spending less time with their families. “There will be people who will be sick, so nurses are making sacrifices where we have to provide services around the clock, so someone has to be at work at all times”, stated Mathis. Furthermore, nurses are not just found in hospitals and doctors offices, but also in nursing homes, schools, churches, in home healthcare, and even in administration.

Another challenge that nurses, and the world are facing is the shortage of nurses around the world. According to Mathis, There are currently 580,000 nurses positions available across the country, and in the next two years, tens of thousand of nurses will retire.

With this shortage, many people may not receive the proper healthcare that they need.

American nurses. Houston has a very active chapter that also supports nursing students through mentoring and scholarships.

Regardless of the position African American nurses work in, they have been educated to use honesty, teamwork, leadership, and teaching to promote health and assist individuals, families and communities to achieve wellness.

So celebrate a nurse, better yet an African-American nurse!

Give them the recognition, appreciation, and praise for being an important professional in health care. Acknowledge their importance within your community and respect their role as serving the

care of you when you get older? One interesting fact provided by Mathis is that everyday, ten thousand baby boomers turn 65, which will continue to occur for the next 19 to 120 years. “We’re in a critical state, and people don’t even realize it”, expressed Mathis. The healthcare field is looking for potential nurses who want to help people, and who possess great morals and values. To those who are aspiring to be nurses, Mathis stated that they should “never, never give up.”

Nurses may not receive the day-to-day appreciation that they deserve, but Mathis stated, “I appreciate me.” She expressed that you can’t do your job for appreciation. Nurses must have a positive attitude, continue to inspire themselves, and surround themselves with people who will encourage, and support them. Additionally, many nurses experience, and see a lot of things in the lives of others, and it’s crucial that nurses have boundaries when working on the job. It may not be easy, but nurses must endure and witness the pain of others, and it is important they don’t take their work home with them. Nurses must know what their strengths and weaknesses are. They work with a team, and they all work together to make sure that the patient is at the center of their lives, and getting great care while they are at their facility. “When you walk outside the door, you leave it at work. The next person that comes behind you, picks that ball up and they carry it for the next 8 to 12 hours.”

Furthermore, many people don’t realize the positive impact that nurses have on their communities. Nurses have many different skills such as; planning, coordinating organizing, staffing, reviewing, and developing.

They use these skills when they go into their communities for different events. Currently,

nurses have a national initiative across the country. According to Mathis, there are 3.1 million registered nurses in the United States, and 30,000 registered in Houston. All of these nurses are working together, volunteering their efforts and time to raise monies for the Americas National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is being built by The Smithsonian Institute. Nurses are asking people to honor their work by donating money to help build this Museum, which will “commemorate what nurses do best-heal.”

Nurses make a huge impact on the lives of others. They not only heal, but they inspire, they are selfless and they constantly give hope to others. Most importantly, we need them! BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HS CELEBRATES THEIR NEWEST GRADUATES

The seniors of Booker T. Washington are celebrating their successes of completing all four years of their high school education, and receiving their well-deserved diplomas. Many students we interviewed expressed similar mixed emotions. Everyone is excited to be leaving high school, but sad that this chapter in their lives is coming to a very real close. However, there was no doubt that all of their fears about entering into the world are mostly fueled by their excitement to pursue their real interests. The Eagle’s Nest wanted to spotlight those seniors who have worked tirelessly in their commitment to completing their high school education.

Joshua Rahman (pictured above) is the valedictorian of the 2016 Booker T. Washington High School graduating class. He is planning to attend to A&M University in the Fall, and begin his degree in Industrial Distribution. One piece of advice Josh wished to leave the underclassman and others within the community was this: “It took a lot of hard to get where I am. I am the first person in my family to attend college, and I can honestly say that it is the most rewarding feeling I have ever had. Working hard is worth it, and believing you can be successful is the first step towards success.”

Ronnie Madison (pictured above) will also be attending Lamar University to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ronnie is a member of the High School for Engineering Magnet Program at Booker T. Washington High School and he is thrilled to be taking all of the skills he has learned throughout high school and actually applying them to the field he loves.

Ronnie wanted to leave the underclassmen with these final words of encouragement: “Work hard.

This school can be great, but you are the only way it will transform itself. We are one.”

Rickya Jones is attending Prairie View A&M University in the fall, and she, like others in the High School for Engineering Magnet Program, is devoting her Undergraduate Degree to Mechanical Engineering. Rickya is best known for her unstoppably optimistic attitude, and her zeal for life. Her jokes make her the center of attention in any classroom, and her fun-loving ability to turn any situation into a positive is what makes her presence irresistible.

Leslie Cosme is still unsure where she will be attending school for her higher education, but she knows she will be majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in business. She would like to create a start-up company where she will help young engineers grow within their field, and possibly do cosmetology on the side. During her time at Washington High School she has worked on and contributed to such projects as: 3D Printing, Rocketry (one mile one pound, transonic, high altitude), Robotics, and the Cosmetology club.

Joshua Pleasant Jr. (pictured above) is attending Lamar University in the Fall for a degree in Mechanical engineering. His hard work ethic, and determination have earned him top marks in his Advanced Placement classes and all of his teachers are positive that he will be “in the zone” when he leaves for college in the next few months. Joshua commented, “I am so happy to be graduating. I feel like it is time to move on. I will miss my friends though. They’re like family to me.”

Destiny Washington (pictured above) is about to be a proud graduate from Booker T. Washington High School. Destiny plans to attend Texas Southern University and get a degree in Public Affairs. She did not attend Washington High School all four years, but she is one of the family. Ms. Antonelli, her junior year teacher, had this to say about Destiny: “She joined my class in the middle of the year, but she did not let that intimidate her. She was an important part of the classroom from day one. I see her in the hallways now, but there is never a time that she does not have a smile on her face and something nice to say. I am so proud of her.”

Tanya has over 10 years of experience working on the ground in Precinct 1.

Her experience includes serving as Program Manager with the Mayor's Anti­Gang Office, Chief of Staff and Policy Expert on Juvenile Mental Health Courts. She is an established leader in our community who has managed a team and a budget.

She will run the court effectively and handle cases in a respectful and just manner.
