America’s National Anthem. It was written by Francis Scott Key who owned slaves and who penned the words after the British defeat of the Americans in the War of 1812. He was a part of the Confederacy.

For years African-Americans have sung the words of this anthem without knowing it was not FOR us but rather AGAINST us and our freedom. Enter Colin Kaepernick...

At first, even I cringed at his actions prior to researching the words of the song myself. Then I tried to replace “hireling and slave” with Jews and slaves,

til they too die, leaving the world a better place than their ancestors.

They will tell us to “get over it” and ask us “how many people do you know are still living who last owned slaves?” Their ignorance will be ever so glowing.

They will remind you of how many African-Americans in the military died singing this song without considering that no American citizen EVER sings the entire song, only the first stanza.

Hopefully, they will look up the words now. Yet, we still fought in segregated units under that same American flag.

in hopes that this country would some day live up to its true creed that “All men are created EQUAL “even though they were treated otherwise. They knew that the flag nor the anthem was truly meant for them, but they fought for future citizens who would one day stand up and continue to try to make things “right”. True patriotism is “fighting for your country while waiting for your country to fight for you.”

Colin Kaepernick has a valid point. Only true Americans will understand that.

Colin Kaepernick’s blackness was on full display Thursday night when he continued his protest against the national anthem while rocking a fullfledged ‘fro on the field.

The San Fransisco 49ers quarterback decided last Friday to sit during the national anthem in protest against police brutality and America’s systemic oppression of black people.

On Thursday, Kaepernick carried out the same act of defiance alongside other players who joined him. Except this time, Kaepernick didn’t miss the chance to comb out his curls, maybe add a little oil sheen and play the game with an afro so round and full that it made the perfect fodder for a hashtag: #KapSoBlack.

Black Twitter chimed in by praising Kaepernick’s natural do and his unapologetic embrace of his blackness.

et’s be clear. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has the first amendment right not to stand for the national anthem. There is no legal requirement for anyone to stand for the national anthem. In fact, the National Football League made it official when it issued this statement: “Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the National Anthem.” He showed guts in telling the world that he would not stand because of continued police abuse and killing of Blacks. He plays in the pro sport that is the most rigid, quasi-military discipline, my way or the highway, pro sport run by some of the most conservative rich white guys on the planet; most with solid and deep GOP ties. He potentially could lose millions in contract money and endorsements now or down the line for his personal sit down.

So yes, he should be loudly applauded for having the courage of his convictions and for showing the world that there is some big name, big payday, pro athletes who are willing to speak out and take stands on controversial issues even at the cost of their jobs. The firestorm that he stirred up for that is way out of proportion to his action since there are 1700 players on the 32 team roster in the NFL and even with Kaepernick sitting during the anthem that still leaves 1699 or so players who will stand at rigid attention during the playing of the anthem.

But Kap’s actions aside, the script can easily be flipped and a case can be made for the millions of blacks who do gladly stand for the national anthem. Most know the brutal history of racial violence, exclusion, and poverty that trapped and still traps countless numbers of blacks. They watch and read almost daily of the

police killings of mostly unarmed Blacks, the mass incarceration numbers for Blacks, the grim figures on job and housing discrimination, the gaping health care disparities, and the endless other big and small racial insults and indignities. The symbol of that is the flag that they are asked to stand at rapt attention to with their hand over their heart.

But, they also know that tens of thousands of blacks answered the call to fight for that same flag and anthem in every major war the U.S. has ever fought, and despite the violence and discrimination black servicemen and women suffered, they still served their country honorably and wore the uniform proudly.

They know that civil rights leaders from W.E.B. DuBois to Martin Luther King, Jr. carried the flag and sang “My Country tis of thee” at and during countless civil rights marches. They know that the landmark victories against racial oppression—the passage of three major civil rights bills, the Voting Rights Act, and legions of other civil rights initiatives and legislation passed by states and nationally were won under the banner of fulfilling the promise of American rights and liberties that the flag and the national anthem represent in theory, if not always in fact. It was their struggle to make the promise of freedom a reality for blacks and others victimized by racial injustice and violence. Blacks also know that despite the towering racial barrier and obstacles that the Constitution still stands as a powerful shield to protect the rights of all Americans, and for Black Americans to continually use as a weapon to shame, embarrass, and cajole the nation to extend those rights and liberties to them too.

Finally, they know that Blacks have paid with their blood and earned the right to lay as much, if not more, claim to the flag and the national anthem as theirs as those among the most rabid flag waving, phony super patriot bellowing crowd.

Part 1 Because African-American News&Issues is a publication that has thrived off of addressing and reporting both current and historical realities that affect our communities without fear or favor for the last 20 years, there are just some things that I have to address. Certain ills, misconceptions and problems that have existed within our communities for decades, have been hidden by measures of new laws being implemented within our present-day society. Some folks chose to believe that certain sins committed against our parents and ancestors no longer are prevalent because this is 2016.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth! Integration is one of those things that some members from our community mistaken for equality.

It is never my aim or intention to promote a racist mentality. But my goal is to empower and educate our people according to the way that things really are. I urged readers not too long ago, to not to let anyone sell you wooden nickels. To that regard, in this editorial I would like to reiterate the same thing. Do not allow anyone to sell you wooden nickels and pass it off for what they have deemed as justice!

We MUST Understand that, with the inclusion of integration amongst races what many folks don’t realize is that it caused a division amongst our communities. There was a time that Black folks owned and operated all of the services and businesses that were needed to make us survive right in the community. As a boy growing up in Acres Homes, I remember that there were many businesses that we could not go into because of the color of our skin. I might mention that this was not just in my neck of the woods but it was law throughout all of these United States!

But truth be told, it wasn’t really a

bother to us because we supported our own Black businesses back then and our communities were better off.

Although we knew that certain things about this was not right, we still have a greater understanding and appreciation for our Black-owned services then because that was all that we had.

Yet, the thing that bothers me the most is that a lot of parents, grandparents, educators and a long list of others fail to educate our children on how this, “Race Thing” really was back in the day. As a result, many of our youth do not understand that how it was then, really is how it is now. But like, lizards there are many camouflages that exist today. So it may appear that African-Americans have arrived because of integration and other measures that have been put into place. But the truth is that it’s still just business as usual, only under a different mask. Therefore, when some of these children grow up in some of the more suburban communities and attend schools that were engineered primarily for our White counterparts, reality sets in, in some cases. Yes, they are met with the reality that they are actually Black and reminded that society suggests that they are different because of their skin. Then people want to go around raising hell because they thought that things had changed.

I have written about it many times, and have talked about it even more. We MUST Understand, that things don’t really change all that much they just evolve from one era to the next. I often refer to an article I retrieved from the Informer in 1963 entitled, “Congress still debating whether Negroes are individuals or property.” Now ain’t that a real mother for ya?

away no matter what the law says.

Because it becomes a part of their make-up and their minds are set on believing those things. A lot of Black folks felt that when our schools, businesses and other public places became integrated that, it simply meant that they were a part of the majority.

However, this is a misconception that has been passed down throughout several generations.

There are scores of examples that I can use to illustrate this point, but I will just use one of the more recent situations that have occurred right here in our “great state”. According to reports at Sterling High School, the only Black female cheerleader of the team was discriminated against for wearing her hair in braids.

She was not allowed to cheer at the season-opening football game against Sterling and Clear Lake High School, because she showed up with braids in her hair. Her name was Kemirah Jn-Marie and after her mother demanded that the school put their request in writing they refused.

The only bylaws of the school require that hair has to be pulled back in a secure pony tail and it mustn’t distract from the cheer environment.

Guess what it really wouldn’t matter how this young lady’s hair was, even if her hair was not a distraction, the color of her skin was. Now ain’t that a real mother for ya? That is why I will continue to encourage all that hear me and read my editorials, to not be fooled by this integration factor. Just because people say that you are welcome in a place does not always mean that you really are!

ANTHEM From Page 1

Kennedy HOUSTON - “O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light…” That what so proudly we hail might just be praising and supporting the deaths of a group of little-known AfricanAmericans who were runaway slaves seeking freedom and safe haven with the British.

San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick is on record and refuses to stand during the playing of the national anthem until further notice as a protest to bring attention to the continued police brutality and racial oppression in America “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game.

“To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Is it highly possible that Kaepernick has a point sitting for the playing of our National Anthem because the “rocket’s red glare and the bombs bursting in air” gave proof through the night at The Battle of Fort McHenry fought on September 13/14, 1814, of the murder of early ancestral African Americans fighting for freedom.

“His stand marks a significant turn of events for this country,” said Dr. James Butler, Associate Professor, Department Head, Sociology, Nicholls State University. “He is expressing himself, according to a heritage he has really has not known before. As he self discovers and searches for the real truths about his own identity relative to being a child or color living in this tough political climate, we must not sanction him, we should recognize him.”

Kaepernick is bi-racial and was raised by White parents.

By taking a stand for civil rights, Kaepernick, 28, joins other athletes, like the NBA’s Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony and several WNBA players in using their platform and status to raise awareness to issues affecting minorities in this country.

Basketball great Kareen Abdul Jabbar and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown also support Kaepernick.

However, Kaepernick’s personal protest over the National Anthem is larger than Kaepernick himself It sheds light on the shameful hidden history of America that has TX- 4

never been told to African-Americans or revealed in open history classes in public schools.

POOR POLITICAL & RACIAL CLIMATE America’s Political Climate in 2016 shows The Star Spangled Banner, (national anthem) may not be so “National” for what it truly represents and adds insult to injury with the continued questionable killings of AfricanAmerican citizens in the streets by police in American cities, the failure of the system to bring rogue cops to justice and the fact that the acts are often supported of by some high level politicians whose statements reflect and gives merit to the Kapernick’s protest.

For example, in recent news reports, Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) said “the enemy” in his home state is overwhelmingly made up of people of color.

“Look, a bad guy is a bad guy, I don’t care what color it is. When you go to war, if you know the enemy, the enemy dresses in red and you dress in blue, you shoot at red, don’t you?” he said at a press conference about suspected racial profiling by police, according to the Huffington Post.

“You shoot at the enemy. You try to identify

the enemy. And the enemy right now, the overwhelming majority right now coming in are people of color or people of Hispanic origin. I can’t help that. I just can’t help it. Those are the facts.”

LePage also made headlines last week when an explicit voicemail hat he left a state lawmaker, lashing out after apparent accusations of racism, was released., the report said.

“What we see is an awakening and changing times in America,” Butler said. “This new political climate has awakened a generation and it is rising up with a sense of social and class consciousness that demands true change, fairness

and will transition America from its old so-called past “accepted norms” into a new multicultural “American society.”

HISTORY OF NATIONAL ANTHEM A PROBLEM? According to History.com, Key originally wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” as a patriotic poem first published in a Baltimore newspaper .

“The Star-Spangled Banner” later became an anthem for Union troops, and the song increased in popularity in the ensuing decades, which led to President Woodrow Wilson signing an executive order in 1916 designating it as “the national anthem of the United States” for all military ceremonies.

On March 3, 1931, after 40 previous attempts failed, a measure passed Congress and was signed into law that formally designated “The StarSpangled Banner” as the national anthem of the United States.

“This is “His”-story and not ours,” said Dr. Robert Muhammad, Student Minister for Mosque #45, Houston. “Whites have always reflected history that makes himself look patriotic, noble and pure while covering and burying the sins of his fathers that includes not honoring treaties, enslaving Africans and stealing and taking land from Mexicans and Native Americans.”

Truth is, Sir Francis Scott Key, author of the Star Spangled Banner, was neither an abolitionist nor a champion of Black causes.

His idea of “the land of the free” obviously did not include the liberty and freedoms of enslaved Black population of America, because that did not happen until many years later when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1865.

KEY’S STANCE ON SLAVERY According to Bio.com, Key was a lawyer and served in Washington, DC. Key ran a thriving law practice, served as a trusted advisor in Andrew Jackson’s “Kitchen Cabinet” and was appointed a United States Attorney in 1833.

He was noted to have overseen proceedings that upheld the system of slavery, prosecuting abolitionists and was a slave owner himself, though he went on record as saying that the system of slavery was full of sin and “a bed of torture.”

Key also helped establish the American Colonization Society, which advocated the transport of African Americans to Africa. Information on Key’s relationship to race and his D.C. legal career can be found in the Jefferson Morley book Snow-Storm in August: Washington City, Francis Scott Key, and the Forgotten Race Riot of 1835.

He was inspired to write “The Star Spangled Banner” but the slaveholder who believed Blacks to be “a distinct and inferior race of people, which all experience proves to be the greatest evil that afflicts a community,” showed little concern over the deaths of African-Americans be shelled

by American forces.

ANTHEM’S THIRD VERSE CALLED IN QUESTION And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more?

- Third Verse – Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key In the rarely sung third verse of the National Anthem, Historians have clearly noted that the phrase “hireling and slave” used in the anthem refers to Black slaves hired to fight on the side of the British during the War of 1812.

According to Robin Blackburn, author of The Overthrow of Colonial Slavery, 17761848, and Alan Taylor, author of “American Blacks in the War of 1812”), both agree and concur that the stanza historically refers to glorying in the Americans’ defeat of the Corps of Colonial, one of two units of Black slaves recruited between 1808 and 1816 to fight for the British on the promise of gaining their freedom.

As the sound of the school bell careens down the halls of Booker T. Washington High School, the hustle and bustle of a new year charges the air with excitement.

From the dress code to pep rallies to getting organized, the Golden Eagles blaze ahead with an awesome start. Newcomers to Washington, the largest freshmen class in recent history, clamor to get know their schedules and a new building while returning students anxiously anticipate telling their stirring stories of summer. Much is new, but much remains the same. Undoubtedly, what is constant is the positive vibe we all feel. The faculty welcomes a few new faces, but their mission

Women you only need to understand that these statistics represent a small snapshot of the sentiments of the Black community which is overwhelming represented by single mothers with deep distrust of those with a duty to ensure they and their children are safe.

We have entered a time where we must address this genocidal gender condition in our own community. Our most valuable resource, women and girls, are in need of protection and respect in our community.

It is time to take a united effort to empower females all around the world.

The hash tag “say her name” is a cry for the abuse of the female to be recognized and acknowledged. The abuse of Black women by the justice system has created an example of dys-

Black women are suffering with the highest rate of HIV. Sadly, our girls are more likely to get expelled from school; they are more likely to get arrested; and, are more likely living in poverty. As Reiki Master, Hitaji Aziz, methodically chants in her presentation to an audience of pubescent girls “there are groups of women praying, meditating, planning, preparing, and strategizing to create a new reality for you.” In Houston one of these sacred sister circles gathering to save our girls is Queendom Come.

Queendom Come is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit female empowerment and mentoring organization with an in depth training academy for teen girls known as ASCENSION SISTERHOOD ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM or ASAP. The curriculum was created with a specific intent to empower girls by glorifying the majesty of feminine expression and exquisite character as the girls are introduced to metaphysical ideas and behavioral modification principles known as the “Rules of Royalty”.

ASAP is a yearlong program designed to take girls ages 9 to 17 years

through a series of womanhood rites of passage courses.

These development courses or phases were created by the Queen Team, (Sadiyah Evangelista, Oshea Weaver Muhammad, Qiana Manns, Patricia Davis Muhammad, Wakiti Muhammad), to connect adolescent females with their inner power and divine purpose. ASCENSION IN SCHOOLS is an abbreviated version of the ASAP program intending to meet the same goals and objectives as the original format while integrating educational standards and benchmarks to better equip female students with the necessary 21st century life skills.

Understanding the Law: Evictions – Tenant’s Perspective Krystin Collins Attorney at Law

Are you a tenant? Do you feel that you are being wrongfully evicted from a rental property? If the answer to both of these questions is YES, then you are afforded recourse under Texas law. The law affords tenants the right to defend themselves against a wrongful eviction. To successfully defend your case against a landlord, a tenant must be able to prove that they are being evicted in violation of the law.

TENANTS DEFENSES TO A WRONGFUL EVICTION File an Answer: When you are initially served with an eviction lawsuit you must file an answer within the designated time stated in the citation. The answer should contain a general denial of the landlord’s allegations and the answer must also assert whatever defenses you plan to argue in the eviction hearing. If you do not file an answer and fail to appear for the eviction hearing, the landlord is able to still evict you from the rental property.

Notice to Vacate: In order to initiate the eviction process, a landlord must deliver a written notice to vacate to the tenant before filing an eviction suit with the court. Review the terms of the Residential Lease Agreement in addition to the Texas Property Code to determine whether the number of days the landlord has given you to vacate is in violation of the Texas Property Code or the terms of the Residential Lease Agreement.

Delivery of Notice to Vacate: Landlords must

deliver the notice to vacate as proscribed by law. Absent special circumstances, a notice to vacate is usually delivered either in person, by mail, or by posting on the inside door of the premises in question (See Section 24.05 of Texas Property Code). If the landlord fails to deliver the notice to vacate in a manner proscribed by law this could be a defense raised in an eviction hearing.

Unlawful Actions by Landlord: A tenant can allege as a defense to eviction that the landlord engaged in unlawful actions to force them to vacate the premises. A landlord must follow eviction procedures to remove a tenant from the premises. Per the Texas Property Code Chapter 91, landlords are not allowed by law to force a tenant to leave through unlawful actions such as: turning off utilities, removing the doors or windows from the rental property, or removing a tenant’s furniture, fixtures, or appliances furnished by the landlord from premises leased to a tenant unless the landlord removes the item for a bona fide repair or replacement.

Failure to Make Repairs in a Reasonable Time: If a tenant is current on rent and informs the landlord of any condition in the rental premises that materially affects the physical health or safety of an ordinary tenant, the landlord must make repairs within a reasonable time after receiving written notice.

If the landlord fails to make the repairs, the tenant has the right to pay for repairs and deduct them from their rental payment.

Crowd favorites included Ben and Ara starring Constance Ejuma, the much buzzed about 9Rides by Michael Cherry, actor Laman Rucker’s new film Service to Man and critically acclaimed Qasim Basir’s Destined starring Corey Hardrict. In addition to these films, BLFF also showcased a huge lineup of international shorts, new media webisodes and student films.

And if the films are not enough of a draw, workshops and master classes led by relevant stars and highly respected industry professionals should be. The incomparable Julie Dash participated in a One

workshops provided information on navigating the legal issues surrounding film production and content creation, becoming a vendor to the film industry, and discovering ways to finance independent films. One of the best workshops that I attended was the What You Need to Know About Distribution workshop led by Brett Dismuke, owner of So Chi Entertainment, and Barion Grant, Co Founder /Chief Content Office of Jaro Media Services, LLC. These professionals provided invaluable information on preparing for and negotiating distribution deals. Writer and Director Michael Cherry and cinematogrpher Richard Vialet also conducted an impactful workshop

Cheryl Boone Isaacs was honored at the Women SuperStars Luncheon as the Behind the Scenes Superstar while the beautiful Margaret Avery received the Legendary Superstar Award.

Rushion McDonald stole the show at Sunday Brunch with the Brothers Layman Rucker, Tobias Truvillion Dorian Missick, and Corey Hardrict rounded out this panel of talented Black men taking the film world by storm. Power Recap S3 E7: Don’t Go

HOUSTON - This new thriller will hit the movie theaters soon on September 9th, 2016. This movie is focused on a young professional couple John and Laura Taylor, who are played by Morris Chestnut and the beautiful Regina Hall.

They are a couple who really want to have a baby, but can’t.

After going through each possible option, and none of them working, the couple decides to find a surrogate. Anna, who is played by Jaz Sinclair, is a woman who seems to be the perfect fit for the job. However, as she becomes deeper into the pregnancy, her feelings for Laura’s husband began to show as well. These feelings eventually turn into a dangerous obsession. The couple is then left to try and fight for the life they desperately want, but they must get through Anna’s psychotic ways, before it’s too late.

In a recent interview with Morris Chestnut and Regina hall, they were asked a series of questions that were not only directed towards the movie, but towards their life as well. : Being key members of what they call “Black Hollywood”, how do you feel about this movie, and are the opportunities getting better for black actors and actresses?

: “To me, I just think that to just to be able to be working in Hollywood…is definitely a blessing. In particular for Black Hollywood, I definitely think the opportunities are increasing and improving in terms of television. I still think that we could be doing better in film, but there are opportunities nonetheless in both.”

- Morris Chestnut “I think it’s a working progress, but it’s always a blessing to be working, and ideally things continue to evolve.”

- Regina Hall : Your character Lauren in the movie, did she miss her woman intuition, or was she just naïve to put so much trust in this woman with her child? : “I think that her desires for a child just overrode her intuition. Just like sometimes in a relationship when you might like a guy so much that your sixth sense or woman’s intuition doesn’t kick in because your desire for what you want is bigger than what you pay attention to.”

- Regina Hall : This film has a pretty dark subject matter, what would you say is the most difficult part of filming a movie like this? : “ It’s kind of an emotional journey when you

are dealing with issues that are sensitive and heart wrenching such as surrogacy and fertility issues, just starting from there its already a lot.”

- Regina Hall “Doing a film like this can take an emotional toll on you.

As an actor, to have to be in that space day in and day out, it’s really draining…you draw from your life’s experiences to be in that mental headspace. It was a release to be done with it. I was looking forward to doing something fun and light afterwards.”

- Morris Chestnut : Some black celebrities say they don’t like their films being categorized as black films because they often feel that they don’t travel well.

What goes in to your decision making process when you pick a movie to star in? : “I like to start on the material, the script. I always say that Hollywood never sets out to make a bad movie. In regards to Black films, and Black projects, that is a challenge because I wish people would just look at films for just what they are. I wish it didn’t have any labels.”

After ripping out Angie’s heart at the end of last week’s episode, Ghost wakes up from a dream about her alone in his hotel room. Alone is exactly where he should be after some of the poor decisions he’s made of late. Angie, still reeling from the breakup, pours her heart out to Paz. Paz basically says I told you so but before she can utter those exact words, Tim, an agent from the bureau, show us up to bring Angie in along with her phone and laptop. As Angie is escorted in, she sees Saxe pacing in his office and Greg sitting in line waiting to be interviewed by MJ and Donovan, agents from the Office of Professional Responsibility. Angie knows this is not going to be good. She is taken to her office and left to sit alone and worry about WTF is happening.

David and Mike meet with MJ and Donovan.

MJ says that the breach was intentional. Mike, to his surprise, is told that he will be investigated along with the other members of the Task Force.

After he is excused from the office, MJ tells David that Lobos was found dead and that cell phone records show that Lobos was in constant contact with someone in that office. MJ and Donovan go about interrogating the team and it becomes clear that while everyone has something hide, Angie is shaping up to be the fall guy (woman).

Saxe, who has some undisclosed skeletons in his closet, reveals that Angie and Greg had a relationship that ended in a nasty breakup. He tells them that Greg was obsessed with Angie and her relationship with James St. Patrick. He hints that Greg brought in Ruiz to prove that he was right about Ghost. Mike, on the other hand, looks too clean and has noticeably had to the longest involvement in the Lobos investigation.

He throws Angie under the bus by saying that she

filed the paperwork for the transfer and confirms that she had a relationship with James St. Patrick who they suspect as being Ghost. Greg looks like a stalker who may have orchestrated events to get Angie back. Furthermore, they question why he was shot in his bulletproof vest protected chest and not in the head. Greg acknowledges that he pushed the envelope with his off the books investigation but is resolute in his view that Angie is conspiring with her drug kingpin boyfriend James St. Patrick. Angie, left to defend herself, admits that she suspected James St. Patrick and used him to get information on the Lobos drug deal that eventually led to his arrest. (Did she just provide evidence on record that James St. Patrick is Ghost? Smh. Damn you Angela Valdez!

Meanwhil at Truth, Ghost is under constant surveillance by the Milan’s security team and Kanan. Karen and her father show up to tell Ghost that they are ready to move forward with him. In order to finalize the deal, Ghost will need to put up a significant amount of cash by the end of the day. This is no problem for Ghost until Milan instructs Ghost that he will now be pushing his product through Truth and the other clubs.

Oh, and Ghost will have to pay for the product up front with a cashier’s check by the end of the day. Milan is no joke. He’s breaks the neck of a disobedient employee right in front of him and Tommy to prove that he is not playing. He tells Ghost that he is now a slave. (Did you call this black man a slave in 2016? And was Ghost too afraid to say or do something?) Tommy, on the other hand, has had a taste of running things.

He’s not about to give up his boss-dom. As far as Tommy is concerned, Milan is Ghost’s problem.

Ghost needs Tommy but Tommy ain’t feeling it.

TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY TSU’s Summer of Success hits the mark with a near-perfect completion rate

Texas Southern University’s inaugural Summer of Success (SOS) program completed its first session on August 11. SOS was a resounding achievement for TSU, posting a 99% success rate.

The month-long program that allowed conditionally accepted students to demonstrate their ability to handle a college workload had 256 of its 259 students successfully complete the program and gain full admission for the Fall semester.

SOS students took a one-hour freshman seminar course and two three-hour credit courses.

At the end of the session, 241 students (94%) registered for classes and averaged 14 semester credit hours. The SOS initiative created a 1.7% increase in summer enrollment last year.

Kyrie Mason, a SOS student from Tulsa, Oklahoma, worked three jobs to pay for the program.

“The SOS program helped me a whole lot. I finished the program with a 3.6 GPA and was admitted for the Fall. The program helped me understand what college courses would be like and kept me engaged. I’m thankful for this opportunity to come to Texas Southern,” he said.

Three pillars of the SOS program were instruction, student engagement and ensuring students’ successful transition into college. Instructors provided weekly reports on class attendance and academic progress. Mentors were available to complete mandatory tutoring sessions. Students were engaged in a comprehensive academic and social effort.

The SOS program was implemented this summer to meet the demands of the Texas 30x60 initiative, increasing access for students who may not meet TSU’s admission standards. SOS is a short-term summer program that gives conditionally admitted students the opportunity to demonstrate the ability to complete a baccalaureate degree. TSU continues its mission to serve as a special-purpose institution addressing critical urban issues and providing access to education to the nation’s underserved communities.

Broken Chains ADG (BCADG) is a non-profit organization formed out of the concern for the future success of our communties, mainly our youth. It is our belief, that our children are not only our future but our today and education is one of the keys to their success. The events happening in our society today is factual evidence that the chains of bondage has wrapped itself around the minds of the youth in our community. Robbing them of their awareness of who they are, their self-worth and their overall value. BCADG desire is to help compel them to excel to their full potential. One of the goals of BCADG is to expose our community’s future leaders to a level of knowledge that begins with an awareness of ethics, good morals, and spiritiuality.

BCADG utilizes Juneteenth as our platform for the rebuilding, restructuring, remolding and redeveloping the mind set of the youth in the inner city community.

We believe that knowledge of their past will help them visualize their path towards the future. While achieving the goal of rekindeling a renewed awareness of what unity in our community can and will accomplish. A renewed awareness of the power that lies within their minds. The power to choose and the power to be successful in that choice.
