In recent days a political candidate posed this question to the African American community in asking for our support of his Presidential Campaign. And, like many of you, I initially dismissed this as political rhetoric, or worse, perhaps even pandering to us. I screamed “MY VOTE MATTERS”, but, I then stopped for a moment to satisfy my intellect as to whether the question could be seriously answered, “nothing” or, “much to gain.” As my Cajun friend says, “Even a blind squirrel finds the occasional acorn.” Perhaps, too, even a politician might have found it.

WHAT DO WE HAVE TO LOSE?

history: - When American slaves were freed, Republican Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it; - When Democrat governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, locked the schools after desegregation, Republican Pres.

Dwight Eisenhower promptly sent federal troops to integrate Arkansas schools; - When the movie, “The Birth of a Nation,” extolling the “virtues” of the Ku Klux Klan, premiered in the White House, Democrat President Woodrow Wilson hosted the screening; - When eugenics, abortion, and Planned Parenthood were founded and promoted, liberal Democrat Margaret Sanger traveled the nation sickeningly telling black preachers that their congregations’ babies should be aborted (as “inferior”); - When the 1964 Civil Rights Act passed, a high percentage of Republicans voted in favor; few Democrats joined them; - After desegregation and the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Democrat Alabama and Mississippi governors blocked entrance to the universities (includ-

ing Democrat governor George Wallace); It is astonishing that only Republican politicians want our children to have the right to select the schools of their choice, not Democrats. Why is that? To protect and maintain the support, votes and money Democrats routinely get from public school teachers’ unions? Should our children be the ones to have to pay the price of lower quality education for political patronage?

Is this what we as a people really want for ourselves?

And as we look at the demographics of all the presidential primary candidates in 2016, it is obvious that the party with the greatest diversity of candidates was the Republican Party.

So, I suggest we ask ourselves, with blunt honesty, “What has the Democrat party accomplished for my family and my community since 1964?”

Has my vote mattered?

When I look at the issues that are important to me as an African American male, I cannot help but notice that since 1964 having a child outside of marriage (illegitimacy) has exploded from 20% to over 70%. And, sadly: Having a father in the black home is now the rare exception not the rule; Abortion and unwed mother-

hood are so common in our homes that they are not even noticed; Unemployment has skyrocketed for our young black men: twice that of whites!

I was disheartened when our previous mayor made it illegal for our churches to feed the homeless without a costly, prohibitive license and set of regulations. I was dismayed when the HERO ordinance was introduced so that our wives and daughters had to share restrooms and shower facilities with people who claim to be LGBT, even though the “B” stands for bisexual. Do we really want transsexual men in our children’s’ showers at McGregor Park or at school? Our Mayor was a Democrat that we elected to have our best interest in mind when making policy decisions.

Too many of our young black men are in prison, in large part because of the 1994 “Omnibus Crime Control Act” that Bill and Hillary Clinton publicly boasted about then, but not so much now.

That Act’s federal mandatory minimum sentencing crack cocaine laws were passed by none other than Charles Rangel, the Democrat senior Congressman from Harlem.

Why, then, are we demonizing Republicans?

I was brought up to work hard, pay my bills and make the most of the opportunities that God put

before me, to be the best person I can be and not wait for someone to pull me along. Should not we want for our families, our communities, and the Republic, a conservatism of hope, grace, charity, gratitude and prayer? We do this in accord with Philippians 4:8. “Finally, brothers, whatever is true , whatever is noble, whatever is right whatever is pure, whatever is lovely , whatever is admirable---if anything is excellent of praiseworthy ----think about such things.” W.Winston Elliott III. Why is it the norm for us to act like “Crabs in a Bucket” and pull each other down when one of our own is clawing their way out of the bucket? Have you asked yourself what has voting blindly as a Democrat accomplished for us?

Detroit has been doing just that since 1973. This major black city, one of the wealthiest in the world in 1973, has lost 40% of its population and filed for bankruptcy protection against its creditors. Major portions of the city are now vacant and don’t even have streetlights.

Detroit hasn’t had a Republican elected official since 1973.

The results of Democrat leadership there are obvious: that once-great city is now bankrupt and unsafe.

WHY ARE BLACK MINISTERS INIVITING TRUMP TO THE CHURCHES? Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst

In the space of less than two weeks, GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump did something that few thought possible, let alone desirable. He went to not one, but two black churches in Detroit and Flint, Michigan. Now at first glance, this seems to fly in the face of everything that Trump says and stands for. He’s spent virtually his entire campaign nakedly and hideously spouting every kind of racist, anti-black, anti-Obama slur, dig, taunt, and finger-point. He’s got a vile history of race baiting - the Central Park Five, defying repeated government agency demands to rent to blacks, virtually blaming Obama for the Baltimore riots, and flatly refusing to address any black group.

The idea behind this is simple.

A nod, hint, let alone an appearance before blacks would defeat his purpose. That is to comfort and reassure his core base of ultra conservatives, less educated blue-collar and rural whites, and unreconstructed bigots that he’s got their backs against the hordes of alleged menacing, lawless, entitlement-seeking, job-competing, blacks and other minorities.

Yet that’s the first glance.

There’s more to the black church story than Trump’s cynical play of black churches to show that he’s not a racist. We’ll have to roll back the clock to the 2004 presidential election to see why black churches figure in the Trump game plan. The story that election was the role of black evangelicals. Though the majority still voted overwhelmingly for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, they gave GOP rival George Bush the cushion he needed to bag Ohio and win the White House. There were early

warning signs that might happen. The same polls that showed black’s prime concern was with bread and butter issues - and that Kerry was seen as the candidate who could deliver on those issues - also revealed that a sizeable number of blacks ranked abortion, gay marriage and school prayer as priority issues. Their concern for these issues didn’t come anywhere close to that of white evangelicals, but it was still higher than that of the general voting public.

In the right place and under the right circumstance, black evangelicals posed a stealth danger to Democrats. As it turned out, the right place for Bush was Ohio, Wisconsin and Florida. These were must-win swing states, and Bush won them with a considerably higher percent of the black vote than he got in 2000. In Ohio, the gay marriage ban helped bump up the black vote for Bush by seven percentage points, to 16 percent. In Florida and Wisconsin, Republicans aggressively courted and wooed key black religious leaders. They dumped big bucks from Bush’s Faith-Based Initiative program into church-run education and youth programs. Black church leaders not only endorsed Bush, but in some cases they actively worked for his re-election, and encouraged members of their congregations to do the same.

The lesson of that campaign wasn’t lost on Trump. He quickly grabbed a few hand-picked prominent black evangelicals for a much-touted meeting, and photo-op at Trump Tower earlier this year. Some of the preachers endorsed Trump, some said they just wanted to hear more from him, and some others quickly distanced themselves from him. But that was less important than the fact that Trump could show the world that not all blacks hated his guts and would do anything to make sure the closest he ever got to the White House was on a guest tour pass.

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2016 DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!

United States President, Theodore Roosevelt once made a statement in reference to the ideal candidate for the seat of presidency.

In it he said, “The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes up short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement; and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.” Although stated many decades ago, with no respect to the female specie, the words that he rendered were very true in nature. It takes an individual of unspeakable strength and understanding to effectively rule a country such as these United States.

Because African-American News&Issues is a publication that has thrived off of addressing and reporting current and historical realities that affect our communities for over 20 years. This is a subject that I must address in reference to this upcoming 2016 presidential election. My, my, my…. What can I say??? Other than expressing the fact that we don’t have too big of a choice out of these two candidates, there really is nothing much for to suggest. In my opinion, it’s almost like a flip of the coin with these two, Donald Trump and Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

Some people may feel some kind of way about my theories. But I don’t care, because I write and tell it just like it is, from a Black perspective! Now this Donald Trump character has really shown to be something else. Despite all of the rhetoric that he talks now, I still haven’t got over the issues and controversy that he initiated surrounding President Barack Obama’s birth certificate. Blatant racism at best is what I like to call it!

Donald Trump created quite the stir in reference to the birthplace of President Obama. It was not that he made a statement and kept moving right along with his own business.

But, he made a complete scene in front of our nation and others all over the world, with his detestable jokes and remarks against the President. And even after President Obama went out of his way to present his birth certificate and kill the noise once and for all, Trump still kept his rally going. Recently, Robert Costa of the Washington Post resurrected the subject and questioned Trump as to whether or not he now believes that the President was born in Hawaii.

According to sources, even now it has been like, “pulling teeth” to get the nominee to render a simple answer. Nonetheless a few hours after Costa’s story ran one of Trump’s advisors, Jason Miller offered a statement on his behalf. He said, “Mr. Trump believes that President Obama was born in the United States.” To add to Miller went on to try uplift Trump’s actions by asserting that he was the cause for getting President Obama to present his birth certificate. This is one of many of the reasons why I believe we really don’t have much of a choice. Trump has told this nation and everybody else that he has no regard for African-Americans in so many words, simply, by his actions.

Then there is Secretary of State Hilary Clinton whose reputation is preceded by her husband, former United States President Bill Clinton. I don’t have much to say about her and her husband’s administration other than I still can’t get over the Clinton administration signing the, “Three Strikes” crime bill into effect. In 1994, President Clinton signed a bill that implemented a rule that, “anyone convicted of a serious violent crime who had two or more prior convictions, including drug crimes,

was given a life sentence.” This bill was one that served to cripple the Black community and to further the cause of mass incarceration. At this point, I’m sure that it is of no secret to anyone the fact that Blacks are targeted more than any race of people, in terms of the criminal justice system. Though the law has affected other races, I’m sure none of more massive that the holds that it placed on African-Americans throughout the nation.

Be that as it may, as always I have to reiterate, that we as members of the Black community have two of the most powerful tools there is. “Our money” and “Our vote” and we should be careful who we invest each one into. With that being stated, regardless of the choices that we have to choose from; I still have to encourage our faithful and loyal readers to not sit at home. It is imperative that you go out and vote.

Even if you don’t do nothing but write your own name on the ballot, you better go vote!

In doing so, you should take the time to examine, research and get a feel for each candidate according to how they present themselves.

You cannot rely on other people’s opinions and decisions to cast your vote. Don’t believe all of these people coming out of the woods, claiming that they know who the best leader or man or woman for the job is. These people getting paid to run around and pass out little fancy cards and advertisements suggesting this and that. So don’t believe all these people and don’t believe the hype. Use your own mind and your own gut, regardless of what little choices we have in these two still go out and vote!

DUDES FROM PAGE 1

HOUSTON - Is the fear of Black males being “Bad Dudes” feeding a hungry appetite of police to kill Blacks?

The lastest rash of Black male assassinations proves once again that 2016 is shaping up to be another tough year to be a Black Male in America.

“Race still matters in America,” Dr. James Butler, Associate Professor, Department Head, Sociology, Nicholls State University said. “It’s very dangerous to be a Black Male in America today.”

Butler said one of the main problems is police officers have no fear prosecution and no deterrents in place to protect citizens against officers who wantonly kill Black citizens.

Quanell X, leader of the New Black Panthers agrees with Butler.

“Black folk should not worry about ISIS – we need to worry about the police,” he said. “Also, the unjust killing of African Americans does nothing to encourage trusting the justice system.”

The latest cases to bear this out occurred within the past week in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Charlotte, North Carolina.

IN TULSA

According to reports, an unarmed black man walks on a Tulsa, Oklahoma, road with his hands in the air. Police officers follow closely behind him as he approaches his vehicle.

He stands beside the car, then falls to the ground after one officer pulls the trigger. Now 40-year-old Terence Crutcher is dead. The officer’s attorney contends the female officer was afraid and allegedly asserted that Crutcher was reaching for a weapon when she opened fire.

Adding insult to injury were Tulsa police officers also were flying above the scene in a helicopter, and while capturing the incident from an on-board camera and circling above the scene, one police officer in the helicopter can be heard referring to Crutcher as a “bad dude.”

“It’s a major social problem and a permanent mentality that has grown into a type of psychological “copy cat” syndrome with police,” he said. “What police see, hear and perceive about Black males in society is particularly dictating the kinds of reactions to conflict and contributing to the fatal injury to Black males we are seeing today happening in many U.S. cities and communities.”

Feature Story IN CHARLOTTE

In Charlotte police allegedly warned 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott again and again to drop his handgun before an officer shot and killed him.

Officers were looking to arrest a man on outstanding warrants near an apartment complex when they saw Scott get out of his car with a gun, according to authorities.

Scott, who was not the man police were looking for, returned to his car and then got out again before an officer shot him, a police spokesman said. According to reports, Officer Brentley Vinson shot Scott because the man posed a threat. Vinson is black.

Later, Scott’s daughter told the media that her father had an unspecified disability and was unarmed.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with families of those who lost loved ones as a result of the excess use of brute force.” said Quanell X. “These cases show that the lives of Black men in America continues to be devalued, disrespected and families destroyed by these incidents.”

On North Carolina shooting, Quanell X said. “He (Scott) was shot by a Negro Cop not a Black man. True Blacks understand and know how to deal with other Black people.

BY THE NUMBERS So far in 2016, 194 African-Americans have been killed by police, according to Guardian site, The Counted, a website that collects data on shootings nationwide.

Black males between the ages of 15 and 34 are nine times more likely to be killed by police than any other demographic. This group also accounted for 15 percent of all 2015 deaths from law enforcement encounters, even though black males in this age range make up just 2 percent of the U.S. population.

In 2015, The Guardian estimates, at least 306 black people were killed by U.S. police.

Excuses for shooting in police reports often add up to sheer fear and nonsense.

Police often say they believe that black male is refused to “OBEY” a command or is a “perceived threat” or “thought” he was armed and many others claim to “fear for their lives”. - All excuses police used to play “God” and end a human life.

negative images and stereotypes about Black males,” Butler added. “It has conditioned them to become creatures of habit and that conditioning leads and drives them to do what they do in shooting and killing Black males. - A real change in this kind of action and culture is needed.”

The issues also begs the question is there a different standard altogether in the way police approach other races compared to Black males. One does not have to travel far to understand this point.

BLACKS DEALING WITH A DIFFERENT STANDARD? In New York, One example is the alleged terrorist in New York who build and constructed pressure cooker bombs. He was captured by police but not before a gun fight with police.

According to Reuters, the Afghan immigrant wanted in the bombings that rocked a New York City neighborhood and a New Jersey shore town. He was captured this week after being wounded in a gun battle with police that erupted when he was discovered sleeping in a bar doorway, authorities said as it appeared more likely that the crimes will be treated as acts of terrorism.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the leg, and two officers were wounded but were not critically hurt in the shootout. His arrest came just hours after police issued a bulletin and photo of Rahami, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Afghanistan who lived with his Muslim family in an apartment in Elizabeth, New Jersey, over a fried-chicken restaurant owned by his father.

Despite being armed, the alleged bomber who injured 29 in one of his blasts was not shot dead by police, but arrested, allowed medical care and taken into custody.

“You clearly see a distinction. He is still alive,” Butler added. “This would not have happened if he were Black.”

SOLUTIONS Butler and Quanell X offers several starter ideas for dealing with the current friction between Blacks and the police.

“There is absolutely no negative sanctions for killing Black people in America,” he said. “If there is no imminent danger of death, there is no need to draw a weapon and fire on unarmed citizens.”

Butler calls for a plan to increase intensive training that helps police erase negative perceptions and psychological intimidation police feel around Black males.

He also said stricter policies are needed that set measurable, enforceable and consequential standards for officers using deadly force.

Other improvements include increased psychological screening and rigorous training that teach officers how to deescalate situations without using force or deadly weapons.

“Not everyone should be able to put on the uniform,” he said. “Some officers are not fit for this job or duty and must not be on our streets.”

Lastly, a justice system that backs real time prosecution and prison time for any and all officers who kill citizens and violate the law.

Quanell X also said one of the best solutions is removing all White cops from Black neighborhoods with less than 10 years of service on the police force. Only veteran forces covering beats in the hood.

THE SUFFERS

HOUSTON - Many people rely on music for different aspects of their life, especially since music has a strong impact on people’s life on a day-to-day basis. Without music, life would not be the same as it is today. As Plato once stated, “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” The Suffers, who are a band that have roots in Houston, are constantly inspiring and changing the lives of many through their music.

The band was started in 2011by their bass player Adam Castaneda, and their keyboardist, Patrick Kelly. The band members had all played in various bands throughout the Houston area for years, but Adam and Patrick handpicked their lineup. The band was originally created to be a ska/reggae cover band for weddings, and different events, but as the band evolved, so did their music. Many of the members already had original songs that were just sitting in dust, but once the group came together, their sound then transformed. One interesting piece about this band is their name. The name The Suffers is a reference to the 70’s Jamaican film “Rockers”. According to the band, “The Sufferers”, “are the musicians that aren’t properly being compensated for their art.”

In a world filled with so much negativity, the band wants people to perceive their music as the kind of music that makes people feel good despite of everything that is going on around them. “We make that music you dance to while you’re cooking your favorite meal. That music you put on when you wanna dance with that person you love. That music you listen to when you need a pick me up,” expressed the band.

When reflecting on our nation, the world could surely use a pick me up right now. The band made it known that they stand with the Black Lives Matter Movement. “While yes all lives technically do matter, right now the black community is under attack. The sociocultural divide between the way the black community is treated by the law enforcement compared to everyone else is sickening and needs to change.” Although there is no one-way to solve the nation’s issues, the band feels as if music can help unite the

world again. Music soothes the soul, and empowers the mind, and in times like these, the band notes that this is what we need.

Furthermore, The Suffers have accomplished so much thus far, but their journey is only just beginning. They have many goals that they want to see come true. As of now, the band is working towards getting their second album out, even though writing a good album takes time. As far as long term goals, the band would love to continue to travel the world a few times, and share their music with as many people as possible.

Although, they are constantly on the go, this band believes in giving back to their community. They have played countless charity events including Canned Acoustica (benefiting the Houston Food Bank) and most recently, a party at the Hemi Hideout benefiting the American Heart Association.

The band expressed, “The majority of us were raised here, and while we may not be here as often as we like, we’ll never forget where we come from. As long as this band exists, we will always try to give back to the city of Houston.”

In addition to, there are so many bands and artist that the group admires. Some of these artist include; D’Angelo, Dolly Parton, Prince, Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Selena, UGK, Chicago, A Tribe Called Quest, Rancid, Dawes, Carlos Santana, Hall & Oats, and Fania AllStars. These artists that have been mentioned have been influential in the lives of each band member in different ways.

The band knows that being in the music industry isn’t easy. They also know that there are many aspiring artist that would love to be in their shoes one day. Their advice is to “Work to hard as possible, rehearse, and learn as much about the music industry as you can. This industry is hard, cutthroat, and built to break you, but if you can keep it together, it is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world.”

The Suffers are currently working on new songs that they intend to include on their next full-length album.

They are also prepping for more international travel in 2017. The Suffers love making music, but more so, they love the lives that they are impacting through their music. HOUSTON - Discovery Green was filled with many people who were attending the 2nd annual Black Heritage Festival. This festival was created by the nonprofit 501c3 taxexempt organization, “The Foundation for Black Heritage and Culture.” This event was created to bring a diverse community together, and to inform people of the African and African- American culture and history. The festival featured many different exhibits, speakers, musicians, artist, craftspeople, and poets. People had an opportunity to learn and experience new things, as well as meet new people. This event was a fun filled day for adults and children.

In addition to, a lot of music filled the atmosphere from a variety of performers, including Grammy award winning singer Monica, who was this year’s headliner. Last year, people had the pleasure of listening to Mint Condition. One artist that also hit the stage at this year’s festival was Yung Lyric, who is known from the Lifetime reality TV show The Rap Game. “I feel great, and it’s a great experience to be here,” expressed Young Lyric.

This festival was very important to the community as many people from different cultures and backgrounds came together to celebrate black heritage. It is imperative that people are aware of African and African-American history because a lack of awareness about a particular culture can create division, hatred, and a lack of appreciation. HOUSTON - Lynette Mather once posed a question asking, “What if the kid you bullied at school, grew up, and turned out to be the only surgeon who could save your life?” Oftentimes, people overlook the various forms of how, bullying, taunting and picking on someone can dramatically impact an individual’s future. According to the American Medical Association, 3.7 million youth engage in bullying annually. The harmful effects to bullying in school-aged children are endless. A plethora of researchers and experts on the subject have found that, bullying has impacts on a child’s life which grows up to affect their future. Elements such as: youth suicide, self-mutilation, dropping out of school prematurely, runaway children, disciplinarian problems, teen pregnancy, societal problems, criminal mischief, low self-esteem issues, eating disorders, depression, isolation and withdrawals are only a few damaging effects that bullying imposes on an individual.

Hence the need for the creation of an organization like, The ARTIST TEEBO JoinOne Anti-Bullying Organization. Join-One was birthed out the vision of a concerned and compassionate father and mother (Timothy, Sr. and Kimberlyn Henry) who wanted to bring awareness and combat bullying issues for children throughout the educational system that are heavily impacted by such tactics. Kimberlyn Henry was upset about what her son (Artist Teebo) was enduring at school. She said, “He has always been an easygoing young man, ever since his youth and because he was privileged and kind-hearted he was faced with bullying throughout his school years.”

During our interview, Henry expressed that the bullying she knew her son was confronted with seemed to have bothered her more than her son, because of his humble and kind nature. Teebo was always friendly and very fortuned as an only child.

However, when he was picked on he never really retaliated. Undoubtedly, aware of his martial arts training and the harm that he could inflict on

others, he never defended himself.

Although he was gentle and kind, his mother shared that she noticed that at times, his grades were affected and she just could not fathom to see her child being bullied. After having first-hand experience in the workplace with bullying as a Black professional woman, she knew all too well the issues associated with such problems.

Hence she began researching and connecting to bring awareness to a massive problem that affects children of all ages around the world. She wanted to ensure that no other child within her reach would have to suffer the things that Teebo had. “I like to protect children and even though I only have one son doesn’t mean I can’t assist with mentoring and helping other children to overcome bullying elements.”

With that being stated, the Henry family comprised The ARTIST TEEBO JoinOne Anti-Bullying Organization as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2012. With the incorporation of defining and combatting bullying issues through JoinOne; Teebo who is currently making a name for himself in the entertainment industry, also promotes his gift of music into the organizations’ make-up.

Having experienced first-hand the reality of bullying in school, the Artist Teebo, has a strong desire to promote public awareness where every child feels accepted by their peers. “His music has found a way into the hearts of many with his gritty, smooth, passion and fiery sound.”

At an early age, Teebo developed a strong passion for playing music.

His mother recalls, that he could play music before he could ever talk. She reminisced that at a point he struggled with his speech because he was so engaged with music. Through his genetically-inherited and self-acquired gifts he plays a variety of instruments, writes his own music and still manages to perform good, clean and wholesome lyrics in his routines every time he’s on stage. Accordingly, the Artist Teebo is utilizing his gift to not only promote himself but to reach out to other children to share and en-

lighten in reference to ways bullying can affect the youth of the community.

Apparently, his approach is working because the children in the organization gravitate and relate to him on the level that he meets them on.

My interview with the talented Artist revealed the following. He said, “It’s funny because I really didn’t see me as being bullied. Because I really didn’t take it to heart what everybody else say. I do feel in some kind of way that it made me less sociable, but I still don’t think that it affected me too much. But, I do realize that not everyone is going to react the same way that I did when I was younger. It really gets to me when I hear of young kids committing suicide or bringing weapons to school and things like that.

I just want to make a difference and let them know that this is not helping.

So I try to help through my music. In my messages I try to remain positive in everything that I say… Not just me talking about how good my shoes are, or how I talk to this lady or I just say how good I rap. I aim to promote a positive forum. Ultimately, this work humbles me and I believe that as members of the Black community we just really need to come together!”

Since its inception in 2012, JoinOne has served as an organization that is building confidence and self-esteem and changing lives. Captain for Teeborettes, Amber Duffy (10) who has been a member for two years; expressed that she enjoys dancing with the team and through the organization she has learned how not be a bully. While Captain for Teebo Mini, Zoey Williams (8), echoes the same sentiments as Duffy. She said, “I have I learned how to stop bullying people and when people bully you, you just stop bullying people.” Williams has been a part of Join-One for a year.

Captain for Teebo All Stars, Erykah Tillis (14), shared that, “Join-One has shown me the importance of how much bullying affects people and it is helping to being more awareness to a subject that is not really recognized.”

A Word to the Wise

When fourteen year olds realize that they are embarking on their first year of high school, many emotions overtake them.

Some may feel excitement, some feel anxiety, while others feel pressure and fear. They should. High school is a time of having fun, meeting expectations and learning just who you are. It’s a time of making mistakes and reflecting. If most high school seniors are honest with themselves, they will admit that they wished they had taken the start of their freshman year a bit more seriously. They see that keeping up is so much easier that catching up.

I can hear so many of my freshman teachers warn me that “This time goes so fast! Use it wisely!” Who knew that they would be so accurate? Four years can really hold a lot of experiences. Amid football games, cramming for tests and just being a

By: Tyesha Thomas, BTW Student Booker T Washington’s football team just played Needville High school on Saturday, September 10, 2016 for the very first time. Not knowing what to expect, we all went in optimistically, however, once our opponent earn the first touchdown in the first quarter of the game, we knew what we were up against. We knew then that they were a formidable opponent but affirmed also who we were, the mighty, mighty Golden Eagles! As the game progress, we showed determination and drive, but could not seem to muster what was necessary to overcome our rival. The score ended up being 0-42 in our first loss of the actual season. Our season record is still up 2-1 and we’re still hoping for a great season.

With the experience of Coach Austin, the energy of the supporting coaches and the brute force and tenacity of our varsity team, the Eagles will rise again. The team has gone back to the drawing board and will come back out on top.

One of our coaches, Coach Newton, says “It’s a good tune up game for us and a great measuring stick for where we are. We have a lot of work, but we are progressing and that’s what’s important. The boys had a bad week and the plan is to get back to fundamental practices and focus on the individual skills of the game.

The bad week will give us a chance to tighten up some of our deficiencies.” He’s optimistic that the boys will get better and know the potential they possess. After analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, both team and coach are in the process of making the necessary adjustments. Our game against Wheatley in the next two weeks will show it.

I think our football team needs to tighten up a lot. It’s clear that they take the game very seriously, but they need to put more heart into it. It’s one thing to do something and another to put your all into it and “all” isn’t necessarily physical in this case. From the stands, the boys seem to get discouraged easily. They have a lot of pressure on them to win and come out on top, but they must realize that they can’t win every battle. What they need to know is they’re the ones spending hours practicing, why waste all of that?

Regardless of how anything’s going, they need to look at the positive and look at everything as a learning experience to grow.

MISSION STATEMENT

“The faculty and students of Booker T. Washington High School for the Engineering Profession are striving for the successful outcome of its students through learning, companionship, research, and diligence.”

teenager, four years can truly fly by. The end result is that many students end up sitting with the dean looking for ways to recover lost credit. What can be done? How can schools support and inform new students about earning credits, graduation requirements and the dangers of procrastination before its too late. Well, a lot is being done.

The Summer Bridge program at Washington and other high school campuses seeks to acclimate incoming freshmen to the ways of high school before they officially enroll. This three to four week program invites prospective students to have fun with their potential classmates in a relaxed environment where they get an opportunity to learn just how the credit system works, learn their way around the building, and get to know the teachers on campus while earning credits for elective classes. Not only do students enjoy the program but they get a peek into what is expected, what high school classes require and reduces the likelihood that students will be uniformed about what it takes to be successful.

Not only is the classroom abuzz in Summer Bridge, but the students are also on the move! They take weekly field trips that educate them about the possibilities that await them after high school. The young scholars who attended this past summer enjoyed the field trip taken to Texas Southern University where they were guided on a tour of the campus and were informed about all the Tigers had to offer from their new athletic and recreational facilities to the various colleges, including their renowned Pharmacy Science and Law programs. Students also visited the Kemah Boardwalk, Moody Gardens and the Main Event. What a great and productive way to spend the long, dog days of summer!

The program at Washington has been a great success over the last few years. Students have earned credits in Creative Writing, PE, Health and even Art. By the end of the program, most students discover that Washington High is the place to be. We know how to have fun and get the job done as well. Long live the Summer Bridge!

Baby Ocean Makes Striking Comeback!

Booker T. Washington’s Baby Ocean of Soul band members made an epic return after summer break, kicking off the school year with a huge bang! While other students were off enjoying their much needed summer break, going on vacation, sleeping in, or working summer jobs, the Baby Ocean of Soul members did not have that luxury. Contrary to many beliefs, each member of the band was dedicated to attending practices from the early mornings to very late evenings working tirelessly in order to be as successful as physically possible this year. To really take a kick, the Baby Ocean of Soul has also welcomed their new band director, Mr. Newman, to the Ocean of Soul family. Last year the Ocean of Soul band members were endowed to say their last goodbyes to their previous band director, Eric Garcia. While searching for a new director, the Ocean of Soul members almost found themselves on the brink of losing all hope for the salvation of the program. The future legacy of Baby Ocean of Soul did not appear very bright due to the lack of much needed leadership.

Nevertheless Principal Carlos Phillips II eventually came across someone who would potentially be the perfect fit for the new position, and all hope was restored once again. In addition to restoring the lost hope, Mr. Newman has seen the potential and a clear future within the Baby Ocean of Soul.

Likewise, this alone will not be enough to be successful.

This task which laid ahead was no small or easy task, it would implement many more challenges and obstacles as well. As a matter of fact, the very moment the naïve band director initially met all of the members of the band, one could imagine the dismantled look on his face as the majority of them had disappeared. Truth is, the majority of the band members from the previous year were seniors going off to college, leaving the group that was called family for four years. This year Mr. Newman has worked with other middle school directors to recruit enough members to become at least moderately sized. Yet size was not the only problem that had been noticed even at the beginning. There are those who can recall the awkward moment when the Band had to sing the school song the first football game against Sam Houston. However, for each minor setback there is always room for a major come back. The following week, Mr. Newman and the Baby Ocean of Soul members made it their mission to perfect the school song in order to divert any memories of that past occurrence. The next Baby Ocean of soul performance proved to be much more pleasing, with better style and precision, earning nothing but positive feedback from the audience. All in all, while the Baby Ocean of Soul was greeted with many obstacles this year, “Starting from nothing to becoming something,” (a phrase coined by Mr. Newman) the program has rebounded quite nicely and for that we owe them much gratitude.
