A Tribute To African-American Greatness In Navarro County

A SIBLING RIVALRY

Pelham Community Center

Pelham is a small community of about 50 people and spreads over approximately 5,000 acres in Navarro County.

Pelham is on Farm Road 744 just east of the Hill county line, one mile northwest of Navarro Mills Lake and twenty-five miles west of Corsicana in west central Navarro County. It was settled by newly freed slaves in 1866, when it was called Forks of the Creek.

It is rich in history and residents have worked diligently to share with others how it originated and, even more intriguing, how it continues.

History The Texas slaves did not hear about the Emancipation Proclamation, issued on Jan. 1, 1863, until after the Civil War ended in April 1865. Two months later, a regiment of Union soldiers landed at Galveston. Its leader, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, issued the order that freed an estimated 250,000 slaves in Texas. It was June 19, 1865, commemorated every year in Juneteenth celebrations.

The freed slaves, newly emancipated after the Civil War, made their way to this arc of land fed by three creeks on the western edge of Navarro County. They not only survived — they thrived, building schools, churches and a nurturing community under Jim Crow segregation.

In 1878 the Wesley United Methodist Church was founded. It housed the first school in the town. The post office opened in 1900 but closed in 1908. Postmaster Lewis Richie’s wife renamed the town Pelham for her hometown in Alabama.

Growing up, admittedly I watched and was influenced by shows he produced and that played a partial and valuable role in the Black man that I am today.

It was critical growing up without a father to see a positive Black role model like Cosby providing some key information about surviving the streets, making positive decisions and ways to enjoy childhood without drugs, gangs or violence.

During each episode, Fat Albert and his friends (aka The Junkyard Gang), dealt with an issue or problem commonly faced by young urban children, ranging from stage fright, first loves, medical operations, hygiene to more serious themes (though toned down for younger children) including vandalism, stealing, racism, smoking, being scammed by con artists, sexually transmitted diseases, child abuse, kidnapping, drug use, gun violence and death.

It is unfortunate that the emphasis of the media is on targeting and vilifying Black role models who have stumbled in life. Let me be the one to note that plenty of White role models and leaders have “dark” and questionable pasts, ie King David, President Donald Trump, Actor Errol Flynn, Actor Rock Hudson, Singer Curt Cobain, Filmmakers and Producers Roman Polanski and Woody Allen to name a few Unapologetic Trailblazer Cosby’s positives helped shaped a lot of lives of millions in the post 1970s- 1980s era and that influence continues to help some navigate through some of life’s biggest challenges. He embraced being Black and relished his role in reshaping thinking about Black people.

Cosby’s work is still useful instruction for generation in need of moral and spiritual development.

It still holds little life gems and never used inappropriate words spoke in blue or negative stereotypical dialects.

He was just simple funny in a respectable way. Parents could even let the children listen.

Let us not forget his role as a trailblazer in comedy and for helping to lift the negative stigma against Black men that helped opened the door for many Black television and movie stars today.

Have you been arrested or convicted of a crime? Is the stigma of a criminal record making it hard for you to obtain employment or secure a residence? If so, under Texas law, you may eligible to have your criminal record sealed through an Order of Non-Disclosure or to have your arrest record Expunged.

Order of Non-Disclosure An Order of Non-Disclosure is available to individuals that successfully complete a deferred adjudication.

Deferred Adjudication: is a type of community supervision where you plead guilty, but you are not found guilty upon successful completion of the deferred adjudication.

Conditions of a deferred adjudication may include: community service, drug and educational classes, regular visits with a probation officer, etc.

If you successfully complete a deferred adjudication for a criminal offense classified as a Class B misdemeanor or above, you may be eligible for a Non-Disclosure. I specifically say that you may be eligible, because Orders of Non-Disclosure are not available to those receiving deferred adjudication for offenses such as: 1.

kidnapping; sex crimes; abandonment or endangerment of a child; injury to a child, the elderly or disabled;

a violation of a protective order; and stalking or crimes involving family violence.

Once an Order of Nondisclosure is granted, the Order prevents law enforcement agencies, jails, courts and other public information agencies from releasing your arrest information to private third parties. The Order does not prevent law enforcement agencies or courts from sharing the information with one another.

Expunctions The only way to completely remove an arrest from your record is through an expunction. Expunctions apply to the arrest itself and are filed in civil court opposed to Orders for Non-Disclosure which are filed in criminal court. Expunctions are only available to individuals that have been arrested and their case has subsequently been dismissed.

Unlike NonDisclosures, you are not eligible for an expunction if you were punished by jail time or community supervision; your case must have been dismissed or pardoned to be eligible to have your arrest record expunged.

Please consult with an attorney before pursuing an expunction or nondisclosure to ensure that you have a clear understanding of the law and that your rights are being protected.

NORMALIZATION OF THE N-WORD; NOBODY GETS A PASS Rev. Al Sharpton President, National Action Network

Several years ago, National Action Network and I came out strongly against use of the n-word in any context by anyone. We took the firm position that any racially disparaging term must never be accepted or normalized in society. We marched in front of major record labels, and protested against Don Imus who lost his TV and radio shows after I and others demanded accountability for his use of derogatory and inflammatory language. We stepped in when Rush Limbaugh was attempting to buy an NFL team franchise (after making all kinds of disparaging comments), and we have been outspoken on this issue even when others did not stand with us. Yes, a lot of people – including Black rappers – attacked our position, but we remained steadfast. Despite

my tremendous respect and personal friendship with Bill Maher, I must now hold him accountable as well.

Maher should know better. And since he does, he ought to be dealt with accordingly.

We learned that someone scrawled the n-word at the gate of the home of NBA player LeBron James. “No matter how much money you have, no matter how famous you are, no matter how many people admire you, you know being Black in America is tough,” James said. “And we got a long way to go, for us as a society and for us as African-Americans, until we feel equal in America.” He is 100 percent correct. For Maher to use that same exact word the same week is beyond reprehensible. To think that it’s OK to joke around and use that term is either insensitive or arrogant, or both.

Just because Maher is liberal and a friend, does not mean he gets to say such a hateful term.”

WHY DO WE GET SO WORKED UP OVER THE N WORD? Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst TV host Bill Maher intemperately uses the N word. Then a pack of Black celebrities and academics feverishly debate the propriety of it. And then everyone within and without earshot is off to the races endlessly chattering about it. I’ve seen this so often that it’s almost ritual. A White celeb, politician, or in the case of Maher, a talk show host, tosses out the word and the public’s blood pressure rises. The debate over it gets especially heated among Blacks. Some defend it. Some rail against it.

I remember a few years back during yet another round of hot debate

on the word there was a momentary national campaign by Black activists to ban the use of the word. There was even a website that hawked T shirts, DVDs and exhorted Blacks, especially young Blacks, to solemnly pledge not to use the word or patronize anyone who puts out products that use the word. Presumably, that was aimed at rappers — and a popular comic strip writer — who turned the N-word into a lucrative growth industry.

The anti-N-word campaigners then and now are both right and wrong in assailing the N-word. There’s no disagreement that the term hurled by White bigots is vile, offensive and hate filled. And that it has caused much personal pain and suffering. But that’s where agreement ends.

Many rappers have made a mighty effort to stand the word on its head, and take the hurt out of it. Their effort has some merit, and is not new.

HAS IVANKA TRUMP BEEN HIBERNATION???

Anyone that knows me would tell you that I don’t profess to be some religious scholar or overzealous saint. But, one thing is for sure… I am very well acquainted with the scriptures from my many years of teaching and attendance at St. Monica Catholic Church growing up in the heart of Acres Home. With that being stated, there is one scripture that has constantly been weighing heavy on my mind. Galatians 6:7 says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” To me, this scripture is a literal depiction of exactly what America is witnessing within this Trump administration.

Here lately Donald Trump’s children, namely, Ivanka Trump (who has become quite the defensive mouthpiece for her dad) has been ranting and raving about how she is totally appalled by the critics that have “viciously” attacked her father.

To those who are unfamiliar with the intense scrutiny that the president has been under, I will enlighten you. The president’s business ties are being called into question, as he has willfully maintained ownership; while choosing only to step down from the operations role. As president, Trump had a duty to divide his presidential duties from his business interests, which he refused.

His defiance is a threat to national interest and undermines the integrity of the executive branch, which ultimately is an abuse of public trust.

Trump is also being investigated for obstruction of justice in relation to the Russian interference and involvement in the November, 2016 presidential elections that resulted in him attaining executive power. After his firing of FBI Director James Comey, in what some refer to as “Trump’s Watergate moment”; his calls for impeachment have been ringing from coast to coast. And this does not even touch the surface of the underhanded things he has done since taking office.

To his defense, Ivanka Trump recently tweeted that, “There’s a level

of viciousness I wasn’t expecting,” Furthermore, in an interview with the Fox and Friends morning TV show, she expressed that she was basically caught off guard by the “ferocity of some of the attacks leveled against her father.” She went on to state that she was “not expecting the intensity of this experience”. However, the political rookie concluded that she understood that the “business of government, isn’t supposed to be easy”. She declares that her father and his administration, “intends to be transformative, and we want to do big, bold things.” Of all that she said, I will state that this factor can easily be assumed that they are true to upholding its concept…

MY DADDY! Because BIG and BOLD THINGS, appears to be exactly what the Trump administration is all about.

If that wasn’t enough, her brother, Eric echoed her sentiments in a separate interview with Fox News. In it, he exclaimed that he’d, “never seen hatred like this” and “morals have flown out the window”. He suggested that, “They’re not even people,” referring to those who disapproves of his father’s actions.

I hear the first family talking and so does America… But what I’m really wondering is… Were they asleep when Donald Trump was attacking and being “vicious” on the former president?

As I have heard the young people ask, “I mean, what is really going on???”

Don’t they know, ‘what goes around, comes around’? How stupid can you be to think that you can hold the highest seat in the nation; and think that the things that you do and say will not be

We MUST Understand, that there is now and has always been a double-standard in place when it comes to the mistreatment of members from the African-American race. As long as the color is on the other skin and we are the ones that are being humiliated, disrespected, belittled and demeaned, without reason then nobody says a word. But when the tables turn, people want to get offended and act like the world is coming to an end.

As it is, this president has tried to do everything within his executive power to overturn and discredit former President Barack Obama’s achievements’ and accomplishments’. It matters not, that the first “recorded” Black POTUS has gone down in history as one of the greatest presidents of our time. All that mattered to Donald Trump when he first took office was trying to dismantle and destroy the legacy that President Obama left on record.

So much so, that he could not focus and tend to matters that should have weighed much heavier on his mind regarding his own folly and cover-ups.

The term, “hypocrisy” in this situation is definitely an understatement.

Because I seriously doubt that Ivanka had very little concern for Sasha and Malia Obama when her father was furiously criticizing and attacking the former president! So once again I ask,

Because there is something seriously wrong with this picture if she thinks that her father deserves an ounce of consideration after the way that he has maliciously attacked the character and efforts of his predecessor.

They are the middle kids out of four children one older brother, Byron and one adopted younger brother. They were both great athletes although Ryan claims to

be the best athlete of the two, however, Bryan has all the accolades.

While they both took different routes to reach success, it all started by them attending different high schools.

Ryan attended Klein Forest and Bryan attended St. Pius X. Bryan received a scholarship to attend St. Pius X to play football he also ex-

celled in academics. While Ryan stayed at Klein forest with a friend. Bryan started his journey in high school going on recruitment trips with team mates, while glancing around to find talent in his team mate he left St. Pius X and attended University of Houston where his journey took a detour, falling behind in class, skipping class and was very immature. He didn’t know how to maintain in a big university. Bryan then took a job as a bartender for a few years, while bar tending, he had a wakeup call he knew he could do better. So, he went back to the University of Houston to finish what he started. He began to work with the sports program as a under grad working closely with the new football head coach Tom Herman. Although it was hard trying to survive as an undergrad he struggled not having a paying job, he stayed focused and continued to reach his goal and his hard work didn’t go unnoticed. The new football coach really liked his character and his hard work and commitment to the program. When Coach Herman took the head coaching job at University of Texas he took his number one Undergrad with him and promoted him to assistant director of player personnel. He basically recruited players to attend the football program.

Although he was struggling and trying to maintain as an undergrad with no salary, his main goal was to be a part of a number one recruitment class.

Walmart. He took a management job at Walmart in New Caney for two years. Then he took a job teaching after talking to a good friend who was a principal at Sam Houston High School.

Although money was good at Walmart distribution center his heart wasn’t into it, so he went on to get his teaching certificate and applied for teaching jobs.

While at a job fair he met the principal of Crosby High School. He took a job at Crosby where he became a teacher and the audio and video director. He would sort through game films to send to colleges and send clips to various sources. He is also the coach of the freshman boys’ basketball team.

When Ryan took the job at Crosby Bryan was still an undergrad struggling to make it, didn’t have much money or none at all. But in comes big brother (by 1 min) although Bryan never accepted the fact that he was older by a minute.

Ryan made sure his brother could take trips and they had fun together Ryan didn’t care about the money he spent on his brother because he knew his brother would make it and soon be making good money. HOUSTON - The public release of a dashcam video depicting the shooting of Philando Castile by a Minnesota police officer is an omen that relations between the community and police are moving in the wrong direction and likely to get far worse.

Crying and grieving parents petition the public for changes, but the appeals fall on deaf ears. That gives way to anger, riots and uncalled for retaliation against police because leaders are not leading or moving to stop the killings.

The video and report by Police Officer and shooter Jeronimo Yanez both demonstrate a lack of respect for the lives of Black males and is indicative of the overall attitudes that have evolved in police departments around the United States.

“There is no move to fix this and the worst is yet to come,” said the Hon. Robert S. Muhammad, Nation of Islam Southwest Regional Student Minister, Muhammad Mosque No. 45 in Houston.

“There is no justice for us. The deck is stacked against us. There are also elements in police forces that are racist and have the tendencies to kill us (Blacks).”

With the cases piling up of Black men and women being gunned down by police at alarming rates and the failure of the justice system to indict and convict police officers, it leaves many scratching heads about the lack of concrete and constructive dialog and action to stop the bloodletting.

Death in Seattle One of the latest shootings reported is in Seattle Washington. This police shooting left Charleena Lyles, a pregnant mother of three, dead. The two Seattle police officers had been called to Lyles' apartment so she could report a burglary.

According to reports, there was some interactions between Lyles and police prior to the shooting. Before the shooting, there was an

Police Panic Deadly That part of the transcript is eye opening and says it all. “ I was scared”…

Scared of what? So Black men are being shot, killed and murdered because a police officer is “scared” !!! during a simple traffic stop trouble call in the Black neighborhood !!!

Yanez had fatally shot Philando Castile, who worked for a nearby school, during a traffic stop outside the Twin Cities. The officer said Castile kept moving even though he told him not to, reaching down and putting his hand on something.

Transcript Snapshots Officer Atttiudes In the video, which is less than two minutes, Yanez initially approaches Castile for having a taillight out in his car. Castile tells the officer he has a firearm, and is warned by Yanez to not pull it out. Castile says he is not, yet Yanez starts yelling and allegedly grabs for his gun, shooting Castile seven times.

Yanez was recently acquitted of manslaughter for shooting Castile, and was offered a voluntary separation agreement from the local police department.

Did You Know Pelham flourished during the Navarro County oil boom from 1894 to the 1920s. Its population peaked at 350 in 1926 and declined to twenty-five by 1936.

From 1966 to 1990 the population was estimated at seventy-five.

Maps of the 1980s indicated a school, a church, and businesses at the site.

Preserving History The Pelham History Museum has artifacts to demonstrate its beginnings and give acclaim to the ancestors who at one time lived in the community.

It will also share the lineage of families who remain in the community and those who return to keep the heritage alive.

The museum, originally built in 1890, served as the school.

About 1922 or 1923 it was moved and became the community and lodge hall.

According to records, “people invested in remodeling the old school and performed approximately $40,000 in renovations into keeping history alive and going.”

Creek and was settled by Black families after 1866. As more people came, other churches also began to develop.

In addition to the already established Methodist church, Brown’s Chapel A.M.E. was also formed in 1905 and Union Baptist in 1916. Today the three churches are still active and services are alternated from one church to the other.

Additional first settlers in the community included The Caruthers Family.

“Henry Caruthers founded our community,” according to the report from Joan Younger Davis, who served as a secretary of the museum committee at the time. According to Davis at the time, Caruthers was just about everybody’s “great, great, great, great-grandfather.”

Also, his son, John Caruther’s son was the first school teacher in Pelham, according to Davis.

Local historians report a rich history filled with stories about being raised and taught by former slaves during a time when there was no radio or television. Much of the teaching was done by the older folks in the community through talking and sharing.

Learning was an ongoing process in Pelham. Wesley United Methodist Church was founded in 1878 and housed the very first school in the community.

Before being named Pelham, the area was called Forks of the

Elmer O. Porter.

In time, several businesses were started in the community and there were many firsts that took place. In some of the history recorded by Catherine Porter, the community was the starting place for a variety of opportunities.

One of the opportunities was a loan from Farmers Home Administration, given to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Porter to build a new home.

Some of the businesses that operated out of Pelham included various grocery stores, a cafe and gas station. The Pelham Telephone System and the Pelham Gin were also part of the community businesses.

In the late 1920s families who had telephones were serviced by one wire that ran along the county road. Often times the line was fastened onto tree limbs and fence posts. It was a party line service with all of the residents on one line. Besides the telephone system a cotton gin was built in 1920 and employed six workers. It burned in 1931.

Education was a way of life in the area and there were several who became teachers.

Since education had always been an important factor in the community the High School Alumni Association, who also started the historical committee, decided the best way to preserve the history of Pelham and those who lived and died there was through a museum.

The building has been beautifully restored and was dedicated as The Pelham Community History Museum. Residents hope people will come and share artifacts, photographs and other items from the past and continue to educate the future generations.

Emancipation Park Rededicated on Juneteenth Weekend

The Negro will only be truly free when he reaches down to the inner depths of his own being and signs with the pen and ink of assertive selfhood his own emancipation proclamation.

– Martin Luther King Jr. HOUSTON (THIRD WARD) - Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote about freedom is absolutely accurate. In a general reflection of the Juneteenth holiday one may grasp two important details in Texas history. Firstly, most- if not all Whites- in Texas did not want to release their slaves for many reasons. In many cases, unfavorable news is ignored - like the Emancipation Proclamation by Whites- or “swept under a rug” if powers be left to those negatively affected. That is, despite the mandate to free all slaves, slave holders in Texas ignored Abrahams Lincoln’s executive order proclaimed on January 1, 1863. In fact, instead of a friendly executive order from the North being enough to free the slaves, it took about 2,000 members of the Union army to come to Texas and suggest to slave holders, “don’t make us come back down here again”.

Secondly, the “pen and ink of assertive selfhood” has primarily been the vehicle of change for Black people in American history. In other words, those who truly wanted freedom beyond permission took it upon themselves to act boldly in achieving freedom. Black men such as Fredrick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Martin Luther King jr, Charles H. Houston, Nat Turner, and Marcus Garvey -to name a few of many greats - are examples of men who dramati-

In contrast, while the Emancipation Proclamation had technically given Black folks freedom, it did not give Black folks the tools, drive, or audacity to be- to Martin Luther King Jr.’s point- free from a country that has oppressed and disdained its people for majority of American history.

Emancipation Park Rededication

A joyful crowd gathered in 3rd ward at Emancipation Park on Juneteenth weekend to celebrate the rededication to the 145-year-old park- the oldest in Texas. The park’s master plan now includes a state-of-the-art community and aquatics center; a new recreation center; off-site parking; multi-purpose space to accommodate gatherings of up to 3,000; enhancements to the outdoor experiences including picnic areas, a baseball field, tennis court, basketball court, play area and event, exhibition, and performance space. The new Emancipation Park is certain to take its place among the nation’s most respected parks and green space destinations. Emancipation Park will serve as ground-zero for a variety of programs and activities serving all ages in the areas of education, health & wellness, history & culture, economic empowerment, environmental stewardship, and families & communities.

Emancipation Park will also host seminars, town hall meetings, conferences, concerts, plays, exhibitions and festivals for all to come and enjoy.

As the 3rd Ward Community Choir sang gospel hymns and many African-Americans gathered,

the spirit of the community that day was of unity and pride.

Many City Leaders supported the cause with their presence and words including Hon. Sylvester Turner, Mayor of Houston, Congresswomen Sheila Jackson Lee, State Representative Garnet Coleman, and Jacqueline W. Bostic, Great- Granddaughter of Emancipation Park co-founder Jack Yates.

President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was made official, January 1, 1863, did General Granger successfully arrive to Texas to read General Order Number 3. The order read aloud from the coasts of Galveston, Texas, was as follows: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.

This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property, between former masters and slaves and the connection heretofore existing between them, becomes that between employer and hired labor. The Freedmen are advised to remain at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will

HOUSTON - Houston Southeast kicked off their 2017 Invest In My Own Community (IMOC) series this spring to guide residents in building generational wealth through community involvement and commercial real estate. IMOC is a free educational workshop, open to the public, that serves Houston Southeast’s primary purpose of preserving the history and heritage of one of the city’s most vibrant communities. Recently, the final installation of the 2017 event was held at the Palm Center located at 5300 Griggs Rd, Houston, Texas 77021. The event was free and open to the public.

The IMOC workshop is part of commercial real estate investment program ARVO Realty Advisors’ vision to encourage new development in areas where residents are seeking resources to enact changes on their own. The program places skills and opportunities in reach of residents who are already familiar with and devoted to the community.

“IMOC is a unique program that features premier, expert speakers with extensive knowledge that both existing and future residents can benefit from,” said Hina Musa, Executive Director of HSE. “It’s an initiative that gives people who live and work in underserved communities the chance to get involved in commercial real estate development to positively impact their surroundings.”

IMOC centers on comprehensive teaching modalities that delve into commercial real estate investing and development. There are two different paths that attendees can take: Masters or Aspiring.

Both paths set favorable changes into motion and inspire residents to carry out their aspirations for community enhancement.

The objective of the Master’s Program is to fill in the gaps and refresh knowledge for individuals who already have experience in the subject matter.

Because there are less introductory topics to cover, Masters participants have access to projects they can acquire or develop. With the advice of IMOC speakers, they can more swiftly act upon commercial real estate projects that will enliven the District.

For those who are new to the realm of real estate but still interested in starting on the path, there is the Aspiring Program. Aspiring participants receive an in-depth education on key points of interest and introductory topics. The program focuses on eliminating any doubts they have about commercial real estate investing and development, so that they can become confident in this arena after completing IMOC.

The branding of the slaves was a way to distinguish one slave owner’s property from another slave owner’s property. The brands also denoted ownership in the case of run away slaves.

These brands were brutally placed upon the slave’s body by the use of a red hot iron or poker.

Most slaves were given names of their master’s choosing.

However, the slaves were refered to as “The Help”. Yet more often derogatory words such as cracker, or honkey were used to get the attention of the slave when the master or Black citizen was in need of the slave’s services. (e.g.) “Cracker get over here

Chapter 2: Whites for Sale, The Auction When Carlos Walker, a Black slave owner, decided that he wanted to move his family north, he posted a public auction notice. Mr. Walker was putting property that he no longer wanted, or needed up for auction. This property consisted of a White slave family of eight, and some household supplies.

Posting a public notice auction was the procedure used to get the word out when one wanted to sale thier slaves.

The auction block is where slave masters went to purchas anad sell slaves. Slaves were bought at these auctions to work on the master’s plantations. Also,, every plantation owner kept a keen eye out for slaves that they would purchase for breeding purposes. The slave owners wanted healthy fertlie females, and strong studs to breen with

Carlos has been drawing since the early age of eight. He was encouraged to continue to do so in school by Mrs. Fitzgerald his high school art teacher and now by his family and Washika Arnold his future spouse. Not envisioning a future in art, Mr. Walker chose to put this talents to the side and sell drugs. Which landed him in prison at the age of 24, when most young men and women are just starting to live life and start their careers. For him, little did he know GOD had a blessing in store and his career would just be getting started to become an artist/ activist and book writer. While incarcerated he put together 3 exhibits and a single piece, plus he has written a book based on his artwork entitled “What If”. One of his projects is a 48-piece illustrated entitled “Walk A Mile In Our Shoes And You Will Understand From Whence We Came”, Illustrations called “Endangered Species”, a 3-piece illustration entitled “The Greatest”, and a single called “Hunting Season”. His greatest work of art is arguably “Walk A Mile In Our Shoes”, because what it portrays is the Black EXPERIENCE in a different way. In creating this exhibit, he seeks to show a mirror effect to Caucasians of what the Black EXPERIENCE looks like. Mr. Walker’s pictures have been created with the sole intent to invoke a thought in all who refuse to understand the plight that Blacks have had to endure in their experience from slavery up until now.
