cross the state, students have just received their scores back from taking their spring standardized tests. Some students are elated, while others are in despair.

Standardized testing has been around for years, but the question still remains; are standardized tests effective? In 1979, the Texas State Legislature decided that all students would be mandated by law to take a test on basic skills in third, fifth, and ninth grades. The test that was first created was the Texas Assessment of Basic Skills (TABS), which assessed student’s abilities in reading, writing, and mathematics. In 1984, the state decided to increase the rigor on the

test and created the Texas Educational Assessment of Minimum of Skills (TEAMS). In 1991, the test was then changed to the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS), and in 2001, the test was changed to the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The current exam, which has been in place since 20l1, is the State of Texas Assessment for Academic Readiness (STAAR). There have been a lot of changes in the last twenty plus years, and STAAR is the most difficult test that the students must take on their academic journey. Each test has had its own requirements and different levels of rigor, but many parents, teachers, and even students have advocated for the removal of standardized testing.

Listed below are just a few reasons why the test should be removed.

It’s stressful - It is not only stressful on the students, but on the teachers as well. Students are depending on a test to help them get to the next grade, and at the high school level, a students’ graduation depends on it. In addition, some teachers are held accountable for their student’s performance.

Teachers are forced to teach a test - When teachers signed up to become a teacher, they didn’t sign up to teach a test. Some teachers are being forced to only teach a curriculum that is catered

LETTER TO THE EDITOR From Concerned Parent & Taxpayer

M

y child attends a school in Aldine ISD. He has struggled in school since day one. This year my child’s teacher asked that he receive testing for special education (also called SPED). I agreed to the testing and was called to come into a meeting a month later and told that my child did not qualify for SPED.

to the STAAR test. This is not only mentally draining, but it takes away the love and creativity the teacher once had for their desired career.

The test isn’t fair - Some students who have only been in the United States for a few weeks or maybe even a few years still have the same requirements for those students who have lived here their entire life. It isn’t right, nor is it fair. Imagine going to a different country and being required to pass a test in a different language in order to graduate high school. How would you feel?

The questions are too difficult - As an English teacher myself, I have even struggled with some of the questions on the released test. What I find even more hilarious is when author, poet, and educator Sara Holbrook couldn’t even answer the questions on the STAAR test that were about her own poem. In an article that she wrote with the Huffington Post about this issue, she stated, “These test questions were just made up, and tragically, incomprehensibly, kids’ futures and the evaluations of their teachers will be based on their ability to guess the so-called correct answer to made up questions.”

I think they thought I should have been relieved, but I wasn’t. Some of the people in the room couldn’t even look me in the eye. There was no recommendation on what I should do next. I remember feeling like I trusted the teacher, but I didn’t trust the district.

After paying for out of pocket testing, I learned that my child does indeed have a disability that prevents him from learning at a normal rate and that he is behind several grade levels.

Am I pissed? Yes I am. I have paid taxes to Aldine for more than 20 years, yet they told me nothing is wrong with my child.

Then I started doing some research. I contacted an attorney and he gave me the name of a child advocate.

Confidence killers - Every semester, I am telling kids that this test doesn’t define who they are. Some students even tell themselves that they aren’t smart because of this test. It crushes their confidence, and it lowers their self-esteem. It hurts me when I hear students talk down on themselves or even second guess what they are truly capable of.

If history continues, then standardized testing won’t be going away anytime soon. If anything, a new test will come out before testing goes away. I encourage teachers, parents, students, community leaders, and everyone to continue to be a voice for teachers and students. There are many issues in the public education system that aren’t being addressed. Students and teachers are under a lot of pressure daily, especially when it comes time for testing. Please keep our students encouraged, and constantly remind them that they are greater than a test!

There was smoking gun proof in Nixon’s recorded White House conversation tapes that he aided, abetted, covered up and obstructed justice in the Watergate break-in and assorted other illegal acts. This easily topped the high bar necessary to bring impeachment counts against Nixon. The GOP Senate leadership in that day saw this, and gently pushed Nixon toward a resignation. They did it for the plain reason that a severely damaged Nixon was wreaking havoc with the GOP’s image and agenda.

The advocate referred me to a website - www.houstonchronicle.com/denied/ - and told me to call her back if I wanted to pursue the matter.

I found numerous articles about how Texas schools deny students, especially minority students, special education services. There was one article by Brian Rosenthal (dated November 18, 2016) that really upset me. It described how Texas schools have failed our kids for many years. It also said that only after facing intense scrutiny by the federal government, the Texas Education Agency recently announced to schools that they must provide services to all eligible students.

My next thought was this: What about parents who can’t pay for outside testing or an advocate?

Yep, they are screwed and their kids are as well. It’s just that simple.

My wife and I decided that many others may have had similar experiences, but no one wants to talk about it. So if you have had a similar experience, do your research. Hire an advocate. You don’t need to know the rules. They will help you fight for your child to receive a good education or any special services he/she may need.

We’ve decided to fight for our son because Aldine doesn’t seem to understand that’s what our tax dollars are supposed to be used for.

While, I detest the actions being demonstrated by this current president, if we don’t wake-up and see what’s going on; then just maybe he is going to get away with it all. Maybe, he will be the one that will fool our democracy and get over. Maybe he is going to create a dictatorship, right under the watch of the American people.

Now I will state this… I have to respect and admire the stance of Congressman Al Green. He has taken a stand against the ‘powers that be’, in the name of justice for the American people. Although at the moment, it appears that he is alone on island by himself. Nevertheless, he has set out on a mission to demand justice against the dictatorship of Donald Trump, and I commend him for it.

Just recently, he announced that he has begun drafting the articles that would begin the impeachment process for the president. He is basing his articles on the alleged obstruction of justice committed by Donald Trump.

While Congressman Green admits that this is not something that he wants to do, he maintains that he felt compelled to do it. He referred to himself as a, “voice in the wilderness”. Since he announced his plans, it has been reported that he has been bombarded with a slew of anonymous callers who threatened to lynch him and used racial slurs against him. But what they don’t realize is that Congressman Green is a Southern born-raised and groomed Black man. Hell, we used to threats and being persecuted for being Black in America – so, that won’t phase him.

Congressman Green knows that, if the color was on the other skin; they wouldn’t let us make it, so neither should we!

Each year, Reece Academy PTO sponsors a Kindergarten Dance.

This year’s theme was Candyland. The boys and the girls get dressed up and attend the dance with a parents or a guardian. The entire cafeteria was decorated with balloons and candycanes while teachers served "tea" to the graduating class.

Aldine ISD Film Festival

HOUSTON - George Lucas stated, “Learning to make film is very easy.

Learning what to make films about is very hard.” However, this wasn’t the case for many Aldine students as they competed in the second annual Aldine ISD Film and Photography Festival.

Many students had very creative topics that they were excited to showcase to their parents, teachers, administration, and even their peers. The festival was opened to all students in the district ranging from elementary to high school.

The idea for the festival came from Rodrigo Flores, who attended Benjamin Davis High School, and was involved in the Aviator program, TX- 4

which is a program that focuses on broadcast production. The question he raised was, “Can we have a student film festival?” Another student responded by stating, “Why Not?” The final answer was, “Okay, let’s try it.”

The first year for the festival consisted of 12 films from students at four different schools, grades 6th-12th. However, this year, the festival had a total of 122 films submitted from students in grades Pre-K through high school. The photography portion was added in the contest thanks to the suggestion of Dr. Michealann Kelly. In addition, nearly 400 photographs were submitted from 40 different campuses. Most of the students who submitted their films and photographs had little to no help

with their work of arts. There were not many restrictions in order to participate in the festival, because their passion is fully ignited when you let them become free in what they love to do.

The event was student led and students from Davis High School served as this year’s host and hostesses. They were Artavia Hall, Kalina Taylor and Josh McCulloch.

The films ranged from topics such as friendship, bullying, and even suicide just to name a few. Students had an option to choose which category they wanted to submit their film to. These categories included a 60 second short, which is a film that tells a story in only 60 seconds, documentary, narrative, animation, and campus commercial, which allowed students to talk about how much they love their school. To help make the night even more exciting, students who won first place, won prizes such as cameras, Chrome Books, and even MacBooks.

There were many sponsors who helped contribute to this successful event such as The Aldine Education Foundation, Solid I.T. Networks, Extreme Networks, RTI, ITECH AVS, Promethean, Pro Computing,

and CDW-G. Bradley Kaplan, the event coordinator was very excited, and thrilled with how many people attended. He expressed, “These students are very talented and I am glad that we were able to give them a platform to showcase their skills and passion.”

Allison Messenger, who assisted with the event, and who is the Journalism and English teacher at Davis High School was very proud of how much the festival grew in just one year. She was also proud of the hardworking people that worked on the festival, including Davis High School students who worked for hours on the logistics of the script and live streaming the event. Messenger was ecstatic with what the high school students produced, but she was also fascinated with what the elementary students accomplished as well. She stated, “While I am always impressed by what my high school students can accomplish, I was blown away by the creativity of these tiny artists.” Although she was happy with the results, there is always room for improvement. She expressed, “My goal is to see more students

discover animation. I feel that many of our students have great skills in that category, but didn’t realize the opportunity that was there. I would also like to see a family night workshop of sorts where they show parents and children how easy and fun it can be.”

The students who competed enjoyed the festival not only because of their submission, but to support other participants as well. Michelle Koy, a junior at Davis High School stated, “The film festival was really a new experience for me because when Mr. Alexander told us we were one of the winning candidates, I was honestly dumbfounded that we won second place…

I thought it was funny because we didn’t even have a script, we just based it on our theme and went from there.

I would honestly do it again next year because it was fun overall.”

Gutted’ Bill Represents Problem in Legislative Priorities - Placing Police over Citizen Rights, Justice “You can kill a man, but you can’t kill an idea.” Medgar Evers

he public got played as legislators caved in to law enforcement agencies and shows who legislators really listen and cater too.

Senate Bill 1849 — also referred to as the Sandra Bland Act initially introduced by State Rep. Garnet Coleman, D-Houston and was touted publicly as a justice battle cry by State Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston earlier.

The bill promised to address race, poverty, mental health and accountability in law enforcement and corrections and was announced with great loud press conferences and dog and pony shows between state legislators vying for headlines and catchy statements after the death of Sandra Bland and how a police officer abused his authority and powers during a routine traffic stop caught by video.

The legislative process demonstrates the great divide between the attitudes in Austin, the power of police agencies and lobbies and how the citizens voice is but a whimper and means little to those in Austin elected to protect and serve citizens of the Lone Star State.

That great divide and bias in legislation is one of the main reasons lines are drawn in the sand between the public and police and little progress has been made in not moving forward the public relations perception of the police in Black and Brown communities.

House Bill 2908 Protect the Police Under House Bill 2908, makes it a terroristic threat that puts a police officer or judge in fear of imminent bodily injury would be a state jail felony, which carries a sentence of up to two years in jail.

Unlawfully restraining or assaulting a police officer or judge would be a second-degree felony, which carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years. Any crime against either group that results in serious bodily injury would be a first-degree felony, punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison.

In Texas, hate crimes are offenses committed with a bias or prejudice against someone’s “race, color, disability, religion, national origin or ancestry, age, gender or sexual preference,” according to state law.

It was a big deal because the legislation

is an answer to two recent attacks: the 2016 ambush that left six Dallas police officers dead and many more injured, and the 2015 attack on state District Judge Julie Kocurek outside her Austin home.

Gov. Greg Abbott supports and wants the targeted killing of a police officer to be deemed a hate crime in Texas He lobbied for adding his Police Protection Act to Texas law. Along with extending hate crime protections to law enforcement, the measure would increase criminal penalties for any crimes in which the victim is a law enforcement officer and “create a culture of respect for law enforcement by organizing a campaign to educate young Texans on the value law enforcement officers bring to their communities,” according to a statement from Abbott’s office.

“I combed through the Senate’s revision of the Sandra Bland Act clinging to a sliver of hope that the sponsor, State Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, would make law enforcement accountability a priority,” she wrote in a “The Missing Narrative of Sandra Bland”, TribTalk-Perspectives on Texas column, May 13, 2017. “While the bill passed, language that contained specific law enforcement references such as consent searches, requiring identification of implicit bias as effective means of policing and prohibiting “pretext stops” — traffic stops for one offense that are used to investigate another — were all omitted. It tore open the emotional scars of this ordeal, leaving me as raw as the day I received the call that Sandy was found dead in the Waller County jail, three days after a

Bland was pulled over in Prairie View on July 10, 2015, by then-Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Brian Encinia after she failed to signal a lane change. When Bland’s conversation with Encinia became heated, he arrested her on a charge of assaulting a public servant. She was found dead in her cell three days later.

The calls went out to examine police interaction with citizens and pointed to the need to protect citizens and change the way police conduct traffic stops and interact with citizens during these stops providing greater safety and accountability in hopes of preventing another Sandra Bland tragedy.

Captain Kimberly Smith began her career with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in February 1995 where she was assigned to work as a jailer in the 1301 Franklin Jail in Downtown Houston. She was admitted into the Sheriff’s Academy shortly after joining the Sheriff’s Office in July 1995 where she served as a squad leader in Class B2-95. She graduated from the Academy and received her peace officer certification on December 8th, 1995.

Kimberly spent the next few years working in Detentions/Housing in both the 1301 Franklin and the old 301 San Jacinto jails. In December 1999, Kimberly transferred to the Patrol Bureau where she worked as a patrolman in the county’s West District for 6 years. At the time, Kimberly was the only African-American female to be assigned to Patrol, being one of only 2 AfricanAmerican females at the time, in the history of the Sheriff’s Office to ever work as a patrolman.

Answering the call for formal leadership, Kimberly tested and promoted to the rank of Sergeant in February 2005 where she received her first assignment as a sergeant in the Inmate Processing Center and later the 1200 Baker Jail. During her time in the jail, Kimberly was assigned to oversee some of the toughest floors and areas within the 1200 Baker Jail. She

In July of 2007, Kimberly was chosen to head a new Use of Force Unit being created in the Sheriff’s Office, Office of Inspector General – Internal Affairs Division.

During her time there, Kimberly had vital input into crafting the current use of force reporting protocol, which serves as the basis for what is still being used today. After overseeing the Use of Force Review Section for approximately 4 years, she tested and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to oversee the Medical and Mental Health Units for a second tour. She was later assigned to the Administrative Services Division (creates Detention Policies), the Commissary and Laundry Sections. She also spent another 2 years overseeing the Inmate Records Division and our Emergency Dispatch Center and Mobile Command Unit. In January 2017, under the Current Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Kimberly was the first AfricanAmerican female in the history of the Sheriff’s Office to achieve the rank of Captain. Her first and current assignment, coincidentally, was to serve as the Division Commander over the patrol district she was once assigned to as a patrol deputy.

When a person passes without a Will, they often leave their family and friends in a state of confusion as to how to dispose of their personal property and real estate. Under Texas law, one way to dispose of your loved one’s property is through an affidavit of heirship.

AFFIDAVIT OF HEIRSHIP An Affidavit of Heirship is generally used when someone dies

without a Will and has left real estate. The affidavit contains the family history of the decedent and sets out who the decedent’s rightful heirs are by law.

Heirs by Law: All heirs of the decedent must sign the affidavit for it to be valid. An affidavit of heirship can be challenged if it is executed without the consent of all the heirs. For example, if someone passes away with fourteen heirs, all fourteen heirs would have to sign the affidavit for it to be a valid transfer of property.

Property Owned With Another Party: An Affidavit of Heirship must be done even in the event that your deceased loved one has purchased real estate with someone else. The property does

not automatically pass to the living owner. An affidavit of heirship must be done to transfer the deceased owner’s interest in the real estate to their living heirs.

GREENSPOINT - Some believe that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Sometimes what you treasure may just be – glorified trash.

I do understand that nothing suggest Black people have gathered to fellowship like the smell of barbeque and fried fish. Many sometimes just show up to an event to “get they plate”.

However, that sacred treasure is literally killing us! That is, constantly eating unhealthy food- that is traditionally prized as indispensable to family reunions and church functions - is a cancer to the African-American community. Studies show that the intake of red meat and fried foods do contribute to higher chances of getting cancer.

One would be naïve to think that most AfricanAmericans do not sense- at least somewhat- a consequence for eating something that has the potential to completely saturate a whole roll of paper towels with grease and oil.

The Combat Ready Cancer Ministry and Men’s Ministry at Fallbrook Church teamed up to bring about awareness and opportunity to men in the community. There was an ample amount of information provided about cancer to the audience during the breakfast, and men could receive a free prostate cancer screening.

The most commonly diagnosed cancers among black men are prostate (31% of all cancers), lung (15%), and colon and rectum (9%).

African Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial and ethnic

group in the US for most cancers (Cancer.org).

Radio Legend and current Host of the Top-Rated Afternoon Drive Program on KMJQ/ MAJIC 102.1 FM Funky Larry Jones came to Fallbrook Church to disarm men of their pride.

He suggested many men like to act and live as if everything is solvable with an “Advil pill”, and exclaimed, “pride comes before the fall.” For a time, Jones struggled with managing his personal health responsibly as he refused to get screened for cancer. Eventually, he would get screened and come to know and respect Houston Urologist, Robert J. Cornell, MD, PA. Jones stated passionately to the men in the room, “I ensure you that without Dr. Cornell’s guidance, and his input, and knowledge in this soul- this body would not be standing before you today.” He would end his heart -felt spiel to the men exclaiming that, “it was only God who led me to this man who made sense to me in just a few brief moments.”

Dr. Cornell had come with enough ammunition to provide insight, education, and support the “John the Baptist” introduction he received from Funky Larry Jones. He intentionally, “stated to all the African American men in the room- after mentioning he decided to miss both of his daughter’s softball games just to speak at the breakfast- that, you are the men who need the message the most.”

How to Be That Dude

HOUSTON - Born and raised in the streets of Acres Homes, Earnest Eastland has no shame of where he comes from, and he is an individual who knows where he wants to go. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, and then attended Grambling University, and graduated with a degree in Psychology in 2012. The new author recently published his book “How To Be That Dude”, which is a “self sufficient hand guide/book for men, that allows the platform and outlet for understanding life trials and tribulations by challenging self mentally, physically, and spiritually.”

The idea for the book came from a simple text message. After going back and forth with his ex-girlfriend about a particular issue, it then hit Eastland, “that he finally understood what kept women happy, which is the sense of security and stability.” Through his experience with his ex, he saw that it is very important for men to keep their word. It was his relationship and stability that created the concept for the book.

When people read the book, Eastland wants people to take the concept of just being better. He wants them to make sure that they are in the best position for themselves first before they reach out and become a better person for someone else.

Eastland describes himself as earnest; he feels that he is every ethnic of his name. The compassion he invests in everything that he does allows him to live up to the word earnest. Determined is the second word because he is driven, and he knows what he wants from life. “I owe it to myself and I want it. I know for a fact that in the world we live in, it’s not going to be given to you, so you have to earn it.” The last word he used was passionate. “I have a passion for anything I put my mind to.” You have to have an excitement behind it, and you have to have an excitement for it… and if you lack any of those when trying to achieve a dream… it’s going to be extremely hard. But if you have the drive for it, and the passion for it, then you’ll accomplish whatever you’re looking to accomplish.

With any success, there are trials and tribulations. Some obstacles that Eastland has faced is financial issues, understanding the genre when it comes to publishing a book, and what to look for when it comes to dealing with publishing companies. “It’s just been trial and error…and been trying to educate myself about a genre I knew nothing about.” Some authors are so excited about getting a contract deal with a publishing company, that they often sign something before they completely understand what they are signing. In order to prevent that from happening to him, Eastland took the time to learn more about how the process works, and what he should look for, and avoid.

Eastland is currently working on a non-profit organization, and through this, he wants to implement programs through different schools that will allow students to assist him in feeding the homeless, which will give students the service credit they need in order to graduate from high school. He is also working on a few books that he is very excited about, and can’t wait to release to the public. Earnest has a lot to offer, and he wants to share it with the world. Hawkins, TX – As the Spring 2017 semester winds down, Jarvis Christian College is gearing up for a plethora of summer programs set to start in June.

In addition to some of its regular summer programs, the College is offering some new programs, such as the Young Artist Institute, a Summer Jam Basketball Tournament and a Coding and Programming Innovation Camp.

HOUSTON - Recently, Lone Star College-North Harris recently celebrated those students who earned their General Education Development (GED) diploma with a graduation ceremony in the college’s Conference Center.

Dr. Napoles and college administrators addressed the graduates along with LSC Board of Trustee Chair Alton Smith, who was the keynote speaker. GED graduate Youssef Martinez provided the student perspective, sharing how his hardships ultimately led him to obtain a degree.

LSC Trustees Linda Good, J.D. and Art Murillo were also in attendance.

“LSC-North Harris has offered a GED program since the college opened in 1973 and has helped thousands of adults prepare for college, training or a good job with good

wages,” said Tina Riddle, interim director of Continuing Education at LSC-North Harris.
