51 Years after 1963 Church Bombing, Lone Survivor Receives $11,000 from Honey Brown Hope Foundation Honorees for “Eyes on the Prize: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act”

After the school tours, the Foundation held its “Eyes on the Prize: Celebrating the 1964 Civil Rights Act 50th Anniversary” banquet that honored Mrs. Collins Rudolph and State Rep. Senfronia Thompson. The tribute featured: a violin rendition of the National Anthem by Tyler Catherine Dennis, an unveiling of “The Sarah Collins ‘Fifth Little Girl’ portrait that was gifted by Artist Doyle Burley, original selections from Recording Artist Zelda Dashiell and a dance routine from Ballerina Freje Randall. Also, Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee eloquently presented resolutions and made a donation.

DALLAS - Hundreds of demonstrators roamed the streets of downtown Dallas after an evening City Hall rally, with dozens of them eventually massing in the middle of a busy freeway where they blocked traffic. The demonstrators strode onto Interstate 35E on the western edge of downtown Dallas where they were surrounded by police patrol cars and blocked traffic. There have been no reports of violence.

The demonstrators are protesting a Missouri grand jury's decision not to indict a white suburban St. Louis police officer for the shooting death of an unarmed black man.

HOUSTON - Some Houston pastors spoke out Tuesday about their disappointment in the Ferguson Grand jury decision and revealed plans for a larger discussion on the relationship between law enforcement and communities of color.

A grand jury announced Monday evening that Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson will not be indicted in the death of Michael Brown. The pastors said more needs to be done to improve relations between the community and police.

President Obama Should Follow Bush Sr.’s Example and Green Light a Wilson Prosecution Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst On March 22, 1991, a visibly shaken and angered President George H.W. Bush said he was “sickened and outraged” by what he saw on television.

That was the beating of Black motorist Rodney King by a swarm of LAPD cops. A year later, following the acquittal of four LAPD cops by a Simi Valley jury with no Blacks on it, Bush ordered then-Attorney General William Barr to begin the process of slapping federal civil rights charges on the four officers.

He issued a terse statement telling why “the verdict has left us all with a deep sense of personal frustration and anguish.” He backed this up with a televised address on May 1 in which he strongly signaled that civil rights charges would be brought against them.

Bush had one reason and one authority for ordering a prosecution. The authority was the string of federal criminal civil rights laws that specifically authorize the prosecution of police officers who blatantly violate the law by using deadly or excessive force against civilians. The reason was the often vague and fuzzy, “compelling public interest.” In the case of King the compelling public interest was that the state trial was flawed in the racially skewed jury composition and that there was the need to confront the corrosive violation of civil rights by a law enforcement agency. More specifically the statute on “compelling public interest” makes plain that the alleged violation involves egregious conduct, including that which ... causes loss of life, ... [and] the result in the prior prosecution was manifestly inadequate in light of the federal interest involved.

President Obama now finds himself faced with the same decision Bush Sr. had to make 22 years ago.

The call has repeatedly gone out for

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to bring civil rights charges against Wilson.

He would not have moved as quickly as he did to assign a phalanx of FBI agents to the case, secure an independent autopsy of Brown’s death, and personally travel to the city to review procedures with civil rights division attorneys and investigators without the personal approval of Obama. Obama, as Bush did on King, has spoken out on various aspects of the Brown case and has almost certainly kept a close watch on developments.

But can and will he do what Bush Sr. did and order Holder to go forward with charges?

There’s the compelling federal interest. Brown was not detained or charged with a crime when the fatal encounter with Wilson occurred. Multiple eyewitnesses say he was shot with his hands up. An independent autopsy has confirmed that Brown was shot after an alleged scuffle with Wilson.

Though there was no apparent racial motive in Wilson confronting Brown, his action clearly violated Brown’s right to exercise his freedom of movement, and his rights. This civil right was violated the moment Wilson presumed that a young Black man walking in a public thoroughfare had committed a crime. The safeguard of that right must be a fundamental concern of federal prosecutors.

The Brown case also strongly points to systemic issues of excessive force by police. The obvious excessive force that was used was the slaying of Brown.

This strikes to the heart of another basic right of citizens, namely the freedom from undue harm. His killing once more raised deeply troubling questions about the power of the law to protect citizens from their unimpeded right to life and safety. Federal prosecutors play a major role in insuring that where there’s the suspicion that an individual’s rights might have been violated solely because of their race and gender that the power of federal law is brought to bear to insure that right is protected.

Are Black Folks Living in a Police State?

I was almost astonished when I read an article by a White evangelical theologian entitled, “Is America Becoming a Police State?” My astonishment was due to the fact that this is a question that I have been asking myself for years considering the ill-treatment and abuse of power and authority that members of the Black community are confronted with on a daily basis. Although he viewed his thoughts from an American viewpoint, I can only relate to the African-American community.

For one, I was born Black and I will die that way. For two Black folks are known to be treated far more differently from any other race, color, creed or culture in these United States of America. So I can only ask the faithful and loyal audience of African-American News & Issues this question. “Are Black Folks Living in a Police State?” Some maybe curious as to what a police state is.

According to Dr. Jeremy Dean, “A police state is one in which the government exercises rigid and repressive controls over the social, economic, and political life of the population. A police state typically exhibits elements of totalitarianism and social control, and there is usually little or no distinction between the law and the exercise of political power by the executive.”

Now some of the readers of African-American News & Issues may be wondering, what grounds or on what merits do I build the basis of this question? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out and we don’t have to go too far away to monitor the events that are constantly occurring in a repetitive manner; that leads to this assumption. We hear about a lot of the tragedy that overtakes so many youth and members of the African-American community.

However, there still remains a great deal of incidents where unarmed Blacks are gunned down and then their murderers are let off the hook and never have to face the consequences of the lives that they have taken. It is a sad reality that this is and

has definitely become an epidemic in the Black community. It makes some of us, who actually have a love for the race of which we belong to feel that these menaces who were employed to protect us just don’t care about us.

I have wrote about this time and time again, what seems to be criminal for us, often results in justice for them.

Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager was killed by a White police officer (Darren Wilson); who has since been cleared of all charges.

Though there remain many examples and illustrations of this police state that it appears that Black folks are living in. I think that it is necessary to expound on the latest events that has caused the African-American community to be at an uproar. As it is, once again an unarmed teenager has been gunned down by a White police officer (Darren Wilson). Just last week he was found not guilty of any charges associated with the 18-yearold’s death.

While I most assuredly detest the actions of Wilson and am not favorable of the outcome, I do have a problem with some of the members from our community. I understand that people are upset and want voices to be heard. Yet, as I observed the news and peruse through various media outlets, it is quite disturbing that some of our African-Americans are insistent upon destroying property in the Black community.

That is not the way to go by a long shot. I have repetitiously stated this phrase and I will not stop until I feel that its message is heard and received loud and clear. Two of the

By Roy Douglas Malonson, Chairman most powerful tools that you have are, “your money” and “your vote”; thus you should be careful who you give them to. The reason why I’m stating this is because, demonstrating terrorism within your own community does no one any good. There is a way to get the attention of the appropriate people. Protesting should be done against the Criminal Justice department, write your senators, state representatives, legislators and all of your elected officials.

One of the key elements to ensuring that the public knows that Blacks are tired of living in a police state is to stop electing the same officials who could care less about the things that affect your communities. Some members from our community are quick to vote for a candidate because he or she is Black. And I will be the first one to tell you that not every Black is truly Black.

Continuing, the Huffington Post revealed several numbers that help answer the question that is being raised in this editorial. In their discussion they state, “21 Numbers That Will Help You Understand Why Ferguson Is About More Than Michael Brown”. While all of the points that they listed were factual, I am only highlighting a few here. The number 86 represents the percent is of African-Americans who think city police are tougher on Blacks. 1 in 3 are the numbers that are used to depict the number of Black men nationwide who can expect to go to prison at some point in their lifetime.

Another number noted was 50 which represents, the percentage of Americans who believe that police officers generally aren’t held accountable for misconduct. So once again I wonder are, “Black Folks Living in a Police State?”

HOUSTON - Oftentimes people have a tendency to negate the actions that they have demonstrated and the characters that they have portrayed at an attempt to scapegoat accountability. However, a group of middle-aged adults who have seen life on the inside behind prison walls, have taken a different approach to life and viewing the circumstances that some people try to make excuses for and justify.

Helping Young People Excel (H.Y.P.E) is an organization whose nucleus consists of minority men and women who are dedicated to enlightening adolescents and youth about the consequences that mischief can cause at an early age. It is the members of H.Y.P.E desire to assist with detouring juveniles from facing the same pitfalls that all of them experienced in their youth. Charleston White is the driving force behind Helping Young People Excel (H.Y.P.E.) insomuch that he is the founder and organizer.

Charleston White is a native of Fort Worth.

At the age of 14, he and three of his associates were running out of a mall, because they had stolen some athletic jackets. During the ordeal, a man trying to stop them was shot and killed by one of the young men that were with White. As a result, White was charged with murder and sentenced to 12 years. During his imprisonment, he recalls that because he was small in statue he had to use “his mind to fight his battles.” This feat lead to him becoming the leader of his gang while incarcerated.

In 1991, White was released after serving seven years of his sentence. Yet once he was released he still turned back to the only lifestyle that he had become accustomed to. He stated, “When I got out at 21, from a mental aspect of things, my thinking, the process of my emotions was on a 14-year-old level - I TX- 4

didn’t have the natural progress needed for social skills. I didn’t have the experiences that a natural 14-year-old experiences. I didn’t go to high school; I didn’t graduate, so I didn’t have those experiences that you need in society to succeed.”

Nevertheless as the years continued to fade away, White would go on to become a father. In doing so, it caused him to take inventory over his life and he begin to make better choices. He enrolled into college and is currently on the way to earning his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Texas Wesleyan University.

Today he has become a motivational speaker for juveniles throughout the regions of Texas by means of a non-profit organization, H.Y.P.E..

The goal of the organization is according to White is, “to reach out to those children and teenagers who are prone to becoming criminals, and explain what the consequences can be when you live life as a hardcore criminal.”

He exclaimed, “I do this to prevent other young people from traveling down the same path.”

Finally he said, “My goal is to go all around the country and reach out to troubled youth. I would like to mentor and coach these kids how to re-socialize and teach them proper independent life skills.”

Members of Helping Young People Excel Derrick Burton was raised in a single-parent home with a mother that smoked Crack cocaine and an absentee father. He recalls getting in trouble at an early age whereas he graduated from acting out at school to committing crimes as a juvenile. By the time he reached age 14, he had already been arrested 14 times.

In August of 1981 he was arrested for capital and attempted capital murder, at which point he was transferred to Giddings State School. He stated that, “During my early

days at Giddings I sought to identify myself through negative behavior. However, it didn’t take me long to realize that I had to truly work the program if I was to receive a favorable recommendation.”

Ultimately he did and earned his GED, welding certificate, completed chemical dependency treatment program, victim awareness group and participated in the on-campus work program. As a result of the change that took place in Burton’s life, he received a favorable recommendation and was set to be released on parole in 1994.

However, unbeknownst to him, the judge decided to overturn the State of Texas’ decision.

Therefore, he was transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) on July 7, 1994. This transfer was quite different from that to which Burton had experienced at Giddings. He revealed that, “It was a life changing reality going from a place where the staff (formerly known as house parents) cared for us to a place where now I had to survive.”

This transformation only served to him going through various phases such as: medium and close custody, solitary confinement and high security.

As time went on and after the loss of his grandmother and mother while he was confined Burton finally came to himself and developed the mind-set that he really wanted more out of his life. Accordingly in 2011, he signed up for different college classes, corresponding courses, school and Chaplin programs.

In that same year he was up for parole once again. Either he would be released on parole for 20 months or his entire 22-year sentence would be discharged. The State of Texas once again granted him parole on December 28, 2011 after being incarcerated for 20-years and

four months.

Since Burton’s release he has been a strong advocate of H.Y.P.E.. He stated that, “Part of my redemption comes from traveling sharing my story with at-risk and troubled youth in hopes that they don’t end up like I did at an early age. It is not only my redemption yet also my passion that derives from a special vision to help youth make better decisions and not have to go to prison.” Finally he said that H.Y.P.E. is his calling.

Additionally, he has launched a production company and remains a productive member to society.

Anthony Dewberry is one of the original pioneers H.Y.P.E., he currently serves as president. It is his goal to express to other youth his own life story so that they can see if they are on the road to living a life of destruction that they will fall into the same cycle. Dewberry stated that he believes, “It is important that adolescents and youth grasp education or maintain some type of trade at an early age.” It is his hopes that by sharing his story they won’t become another statistic. He said that ultimately H.Y.P.E. is about being a movement and trying to give back, as he feels that this is a responsibility that he must hold true to. Dewberry feels that he along with other members of H.Y.P.E have something to offer the youth by sharing their story. Dewberry was sentenced at the age of 15 and did a 18-year sentence.

Although he knows that he can not do everything over again he like Public Enemy (a hip-hop group), rapped about in the late 1980’s, admonishes the youth today to, “Don’t believe the hype.!”

Having worked in Law Enforcement for over 23 plus years, and with the Harris County Constable’s Office for over 14 of those years, Constable Alan Rosen’s training, education, and depth of experience makes him uniquely qualified to provide the leadership and management skills needed for the success and growth of the Precinct One Constable’s Office.

During Constable Alan Rosen’s career, he has worked in almost every Law Enforcement capacity to include street patrol, fugitive warrants, marine patrol, criminal warrants, narcotics, and mental health warrants. He also served as a member of the Executive Command Staff at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Constable Rosen had an extensive business background prior to being elected Constable, and has the business experience to successfully manage budgets and public resources effectively.

Under Constable Rosen’s leadership, the Precinct One Constable’s Office has accomplished numerous firsts within Precinct One. During his first year in office, Constable Rosen created the first ever Precinct One Special Response Group (“SRG”), assigned the first Deputy Constable in the history of the Precinct One Constables Office to the Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”) HIDTA Group Task Force, created the first ever Precinct One S.W.A.T. certified Tactical Response Team (“TRT”), ensured that all deputies assigned to the Mental Health Special Operations Division are mental health certified through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (“TCOLE”) just to name a few accomplishments. In Memory of: First Lady Gladys Glass Barksdale

HOUSTON - Gladys Glass Barksdale, 63, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 11, 2014. Gladys was born to Raymond and Mattye Glass on March 18, 1951 in Houston, Texas. Gladys attended Houston public schools and finished from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1969.

Gladys attended Boston University where she majored in Early Childhood Education and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Gladys began her teaching career in the Aldine Independent School District. In 1974, she married the love of her life, Leonard Barksdale III and moved with him to Kentucky. While in Kentucky, she taught in the Jefferson County Public Schools and also received her Master of Arts Degree in Reading Education from the University of Louisville.

Upon returning to Houston, Gladys continued her career in education and also started her family with the birth of her daughter Lea and the birth of Anita.

She took pride in being a supportive and loving mother, wife and career woman.

She taught at Dairy Ash-ford Elementary School, Langston Elementary and later at R.W. Dick Dowling Middle School where

she taught eighth grade reading until her retirement in December of 1998. She has devoted much of her life to helping young

people in the field of education.

Gladys was a member of the HumbleIntercontinental Chapter of the Top Ladies of Distinction for many years and served as the Top Teens of America Advisor. Gladys was baptized at a very early age and was a life-long member of Fifth Ward Missionary Baptist Church (FWMBC).

In 1994, she became First Lady of Fifth Ward Missionary Baptist Church, as her husband accepted the call to Pastor the church. She was a dutiful wife, mother and an exemplary First Lady. She was a beautiful persona true child of God. Gladys is survived by her husband of 40 years Pastor Leonard Barksdale III, daughters Lea and Anita; sisters Cynthia Glass Bivins (Demetrius) and Delphia Hamilton Carroll; brothers Raymond “Randy” Glass II (Deirdre) and Roderick “Rocky” Glass; Mother-in-law, Joan Barksdale; nieces, nephews, as well as many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mattye and Raymond Glass.

Religion Profile - Emmanuel Church of God in Christ

HOUSTON – African-American News & Issues presents Emmanuel Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Hewitt Richardson, Sr. The church’s rich history is an incredible story of miracles and God’s divine providence. It all began far, far away, in the scenic city of Phoenix, Arizona where Senior Pastor and Mother Ola had relocated as a newly married couple from the state of Louisiana. They had settled in this new “oasis in the desert” and were making plans to make this their permanent new home. However, in the spring of 1966, the Pastor, then known as Minister Richardson, experienced a spiritual vision. In this vision, God directed him to move to Houston, for he had prepared him for a “great work”.

The pastor shared this vision with his wife, and they, with their first born son, prayerfully surrendered to God’s will, relocating to the city of Houston later in the same year.

After settling in the Houston area and going through a period of trials and transition, God again visited the man of God, but this time in a spiritual dream.

God vividly revealed to him a little white building with a small piece of paper on the front door. After driving all over the TX-8

city, the exact same building seen in the dream, was located. Much to his chagrin, there was actually a small piece of paper, which was a handwritten note, posted on the door just as the dream had revealed.

This little note was written by the Pastor of the congregation that had been previously worshipping there. The note stated that a new location had been established and instructed the members to gather at the new address. The owner of the building was located – it had previously been converted from a home but was now secured for church services.

At the Bennington location, a new church was formed and christened: Emmanuel - meaning “God is with us”.

With only 5 members, the Lord began to prove that he really was “with them”.

As Pastor Richardson preached the Gospel with fiery conviction and holy fervor, God saved, healed miraculously and filled many souls seeking God for the baptism of the Holy Ghost. So many firsts were celebrated during this humble beginning and in a few short years the location became too small to hold the saints.

In 1970, the Lord revealed a new location for the church to the Pastor during a spiritual dream. In this dream,

Lone Star College SBDC announces winners for 2014 Small Business awards

HOUSTON – The Lone Star College Small Business Development Center Advisory Council has named its six 2014 Small Business of the Year Award winners.

The winners, one representing each of the six Lone Star Colleges, were honored Thursday, Nov. 20, at the SBDC Advisory Council’s 28th Annual Small Business of the Year Awards Banquet held at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. This year’s awards were sponsored by BBVA Compass Bank.

Stephen Head, LSC chancellor, welcomed guests and the business owners as part of the event, which included more than 340 in attendance.

“Lone Star College understands the challenges small businesses owners face and is proud to play a part

in helping them succeed,” said Head.

“These small businesses are vital to the local economy and all the finalists and winners should be proud of what they have accomplished.”

Immigration reform means big boost to Houston’s labor force

HOUSTON - There are few more politically polarizing issues of late than immigration reform, but for many in Houston, President Barack Obama’s recent executive order on immigration is about business.

“For legal contractors it’s going to be a tremendous boom because now we have access to labor that we haven’t been able to hire,” said Stan Marek, CEO of Houston-based Marek Brothers Company Inc. and longtime proponent of immigration reform.

Many Houston business owners have depended on undocumented workers for substantial portions of their workforce and are thus continuously rolling the dice that they won’t get audited and ultimately have to dismiss enough employees to shut down their business, either temporarily or permanently, said Foster” Charles Foster, founding partner of Houston-based immigration law firm Foster LLP.

Obama’s executive order extends temporary relief from deportation to undocumented parents of children who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, have been in U.S. for five years or more and have no criminal background.

The order also expands the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which offers unauthorized immigrants who arrived in the U.S. before turning 16 temporary relief from deportation action. The expansion eliminates the age cap for applicants and revises the cutoff arrival date from 2007 to 2010.

Nationwide, roughly 5.2 million unauthorized immigrants may be eligible for these programs, according to the Migration Policy Institute. This is also a relief for Houston’s burgeoning immigration law practices, which finally have a legal framework within which to help business owners legitimize their workforce.

“There is going to be a rush of a million-plus individuals wanting to get into the system,” Foster said.

The number of undocumented workers in Houston is hard to pin down. The Migration Policy Institute breaks down its data by state, putting Texas’ unauthorized population at nearly 1.5 million, with 80 percent born in Mexico.

The University of Texas at Austin collaborated with the Austin-based Workers Defense Project to report on issues related to employing undocumented workers. The report, released in January 2013, said roughly 50 percent of the construction workforce in Texas is undocumented. Those numbers are made more problematic when the Texas Legislature drags its feet on immigration policy.

But it’s not just workers in the construction industry.

Currently, recruiting top talent from pools of international students in competitive undergraduate and graduate programs across the U.S. is fraught with regulatory difficulties, Foster said.

Sistas in Business Receives $10K Partnership Grant from Comerica Bank and FHLB Dallas

SAN ANTONIO - Sistas in Business, a nonprofit that helps African-American women business owners, received a $10,000 Partnership Grant Program (PGP) award last week from Comerica Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas).

The PGP grant will be used to make technical assistance available to small business start-ups and provide materials for its financial literacy programs.

Sistas in Business was founded in 2004 by Laura Thompson, an entrepreneur who wanted to meet other business women, share ideas, and make friends. She began by sending 100 lunch invitations to TX-10

African-American women business owners and providing free lunches to the first 20 women who responded.

The company blossomed and has held monthly lunches for almost 10 years.

"Sistas in Business was established for the purpose of educating, inspiring, and connecting African-American women business owners," said Ms. Thompson. "All of the Sistas in Business members benefit from being involved in the group. We have many success stories, such as Adrienne, a woman who was doing makeup as a hobby, and after coming to a workshop, created a successful business as a makeup artist. At her first function, she met a woman and was hired to

do the makeup for a wedding party that weekend. She said her life has changed as a result of her involvement with Sistas in Business."

Comerica Bank, an FHLB Dallas member, participates in the PGP, which provides funding for the operational needs of community-based organizations involved in affordable housing and economic development.

FHLB Dallas matches a member's cash contribution to a communitybased organization of $500 up to $5,000 at a 3:1 ratio.

CRA manager for Comerica Bank.

"Comerica has provided Sistas in Business with donations and financial literacy materials, in addition to sponsoring this grant. In 2014, FHLB Dallas awarded $225,000 in PGP awards through its members.

nti-bullying week was recently celebrated nationally. Schools, organizations, parents, teachers, and students use anti-bullying week to speak out against bullying, reach out to victims, and educate themselves about bullying.

Bullying is a form of harassment that can affect anyone at any age and can take place in many forms from classroom harassment to workplace harassment and from offline harassment to online harassment. One thing all bullies have in common is the desire to control others so that they can feel better about themselves.

According to Bullying Statistics. org, almost half of all children in the United States will experience bullying and about 10% of children are bullied on a regular basis. About 30% of teenagers are involved in bullying and younger teenagers are more likely to bully their peers than older teenagers. Boys and girls are equally likely to bully, but they bully in different ways. Boys are more likely to use violence to attack their victims and girls are more likely to verbally abuse their victims. Boys who are victims of bullying are more likely to use violence and deadly force to retaliate against a bully. Most students who bring guns, knives, and other weapons to school are boys and in most cases the purpose for bringing the weapon is to get back at a bully. “71% of school shooters are victims of bullying”, said Antibullying speaker Fabian Ramirez.

School shootings tend to look like spontaneous events to us, but most school shootings have been planned out by the shooter long before the event makes breaking news. “86% of school shooters have a plan,” said Ramirez. “Many times the plans are not on paper, they are in the shooter’s

Most of these shooters don’t have anyone to talk to and stereotypically, males are less likely than females to talk about their feelings. “When kids don’t talk out, they act out,” says Ramirez Children look up to adults to protect them from bullying, but the sad fact is many adults are bullies themselves. According to PSB.org, about 25% of American employees will experience some form of bullying at work. According to PBS.org, adult bullying usually occurs in these five forms: narcissistic bullying, impulsive bullying, physical bullying, verbal bullying, and secondary bullying. Narcissistic bullies are self-centered people who have little to no empathy for others and who have almost no fear of consequences.

Impulsive bullies lash out at other people as a way to manage their emotions or cope with a stressful event that is going on in their lives.

Physical bullying includes violence and assault, unwanted touching or physical forms of sexual harassment, and theft or damage of property.

Verbal bullying includes verbal abuse and spreading rumors about another person. Secondary bullying is when another person forms an alliance with the bully to avoid becoming the bully’s next victim. Although secondary bullies feel bad about what they are doing, their main concern is protecting themselves.

Do you think that you or a co-worker is being bullied at work?

Here are some signs of workplace bullying: being left out of meetings or work-related social events, receiving put-downs about your intelligence or competence, having your work sabotaged, having your phone calls or emails ignored, being given a larger workload and shorter deadlines than other employees, not receiving help or feedback about your work, being yelled at, and being humiliated in front of others.

Adult bullying is hard to control since adults are more likely to use verbal and emotional abuse rather than violence to bully other adults.

Managers and supervisors really cannot do anything about bullying unless victims can provide documentation of the bullying. Until then, all victims

Anti-Bullying & Gang Awareness can do is try their best to ignore their bullies and focus on doing their jobs.

Cyber bullying is becoming a large problem among children and adults as more of us are becoming dependent upon technology. This means you are not even safe from bullying in the privacy of your own home. Children and teenagers experience cyber bullying on social media websites, in instant messages, and in text messages. Children can be bullied by anyone online, including by children they know, children they don’t know, and by adults.

Some examples of cyber bullying include posting rude comments on someone’s Facebook page, sending threatening or harassing messages on social media sites, posting or sharing nude pictures of another person without that person’s consent, and excluding someone from an online activity. “Being excluded from an online game or conversation causes the same feelings of anger sadness, and low self-esteem that one would experience while being excluded from a group in person,” says Fabian Ramirez.

Some adults engage in cyber bullying on social media websites and on forums. Adults are more likely to cyber bully by insulting each others’ political preferences, religious views, parenting style, views on controversial topics or news, and other personal values. For example, adults often get into heated arguments in the comments section of online articles.

The comments section is supposed to be a place where people can freely voice their opinions, but many people use the comments section to promote hate and prejudice.

In honor of anti-bullying week, the Center for Safe and Secure Schools held their Anti-Bullying and Gang Awareness Workshop at the Harris County Department of Education on November 21, 2014. Educators, law enforcement, and parents were all present to learn more about bullying and what they can do to help stop bullying. Fabian Ramirez, an Anti-bullying speaker and Drug Prevention Specialist and Samuel Cerda, a Certified Crime Prevention Specialist and 24 year veteran in law enforcement were key speakers at the

workshop.

Bullying is a very personal issue for Fabian Ramirez because he was a victim of bullying in middle school.

Ramirez still vividly remembers the day when he was punched in the face by an older boy. The older boy was in a gang and he attacked Ramirez because Ramirez refused to buy a bag of drugs. To make matters worse, Ramirez was attacked on his first day of middle school. Once excited about going off to middle school for the first time, Ramirez soon dreaded the thought of going to school. “All of a sudden, that school became an unstable environment.” “The building and the classroom are physically safe, but because that bully was there, that school did not feel like a safe place to me,” said Ramirez. “I kept my feelings bottled up and decided not to tell my parents about the bullying, because I didn’t want the bully and his gang to come by my house and hurt my family.”

One day Ramirez just couldn’t bear the bullying anymore and decided to stay home from school that day.

That same day, the police showed up and demanded that Ramirez get in the squad car and get a ride to class. Ramirez showed up to class angry and refused to listen to his teacher Ms.Berntsen. Ms. Berntsen was shocked by Ramirez’s behavior and asked Ramirez to stay after class to speak with her. Ms. Berntsen was the one person at school that Ramirez felt safe around because she did small things such as said “good morning” to him or gave him a high five when he walked pass her in the hall. She did small things to let him know that she cared about him.

Ramirez called these things deposits.

“Ms. Berntsen always made small deposits into my life.” “These small deposits made a big difference in my day.” “The conversation I had with Ms. Berntsen that day changed my life.” When I sat down with Ms. Berntsen, she said “Fabian I don’t know who you think you are coming to my class being disrespectful, but I’ve been teaching for over 10 years and I’ve seen kids like you come and go.”

“One thing I know for sure is that you’re hurting and there is something going on in your life, because every time you show up, you act up.” “The minute you show up, the mood in this classroom changes.” Ramirez said he was put off by the tone of voice Ms. Berntsen used when she spoke to him. “I could have stormed out of the room that day, but I stayed and let her get angry with me, because I felt safe around her and she was the one person at school who paid attention to me,” said Ramirez. “So I let my guard down and I went on and told Ms. Berntsen about the hurt I was feeling, the bully and his gang, and the drugs.” “Ms. Berntsen didn’t try to solve my problems; she just said she was sorry that I had to go through all the bad things that I went through.” “She affirmed what I was feeling by saying that schools should be a safe place where students can learn without feeling threatened or intimidated by other students.”

“That was all I needed was someone to listen to me and sympathize with me.”
