Now They Want to Burn the Brother Twice???

n American surgeon, author and public health researcher who specializes in general and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, once made a statement.

Undoubtably after performing various amounts of surgeries and many procedures, Dr. Atul Gawande drew an assumption about the suffering of a human body. In that thought he revealed that, “The damage that the human body can survive these days is as awesome as it is horrible: crushing, burning, bombing, a burst blood vessel in the brain, a ruptured colon, a massive heart attack, rampaging infection. These conditions had once been uniformly fatal.”

Anyone that is in the medical field or has had some experience in the industry I’m sure can tell you that the human body is built and made far different than any other creature that has been created.

Throughout the last month or so Ebola has ran across many headlines, remains as one of the latest trending issues and had the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at an all-time alert.

The infection is one that has been defined as being, “an infectious and

generally fatal disease marked by fever and severe internal bleeding, spread through contact with infected body fluids by a filovirus ( Ebola virus ), whose normal host species is unknown.”

Not too long ago I made reference to the devastation of the disease in one my editorials here in African-American News & Issues entitled, “Why Did Bro Die?” I’m sure that most of our faithful and loyal readers of AfricanAmerican News&Issues are up to speed on the trending topic. A brief overview of the topic confirms that, Thomas Eric Duncan a man from Liberia who traveled into the United States and arrived at Dallas lost his life at the age of 42 to Ebola. Before making his way to the US he’d tried assisting a pregnant woman who died a few days later from the disease.

However, Duncan was not aware of the status of the Liberian woman he only saw an individual in need of help. Days later he began to feel the initial effects and symptoms of Ebola and sought treatment at a Dallas hospital.

After being overlooked and sent home with antibiotics he returned days later only to find out that

indeed he had become a victim to Ebola. Yet, this diagnosis came a little too late and many argue and I have to agree that the appropriate measures were not taken to ensure that every viable option was afforded to Duncan.

Nevertheless, even after the passing of Duncan the circumstances surrounding the disposal of his remains leaves me with yet another question. “So now you want to burn the Brother twice?”

I am posed with this question because officials have already saw to it that Duncan’s remains were cremated. Not only his remains, but the linen, carpet, bedding and less than half a dozen truckloads full of “potential Ebola-contaminated material” in Port Arthur, Texas.

Now even though it has been concluded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that “Ebola-associated waste that has been appropriately inactivated or incinerated is no longer infectious,” that means very little to the State of Louisiana.

there is just something about this Blackness, I say it and write it all the time and you better believe that I mean it too. According to recent reports regarding, Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell just burning the brother’s ashes wasn’t good enough for him in so many words.

Because he has sought a restraining order to prohibit the remains and belongings to a Louisiana landfill located in Carlyss, a small town not too far from Lake Charles.

Caldwell officially said in a statement that, “the health and safety of our Louisiana citizens is our top priority.”

Which one could understand if the requests being made had been of a detrimental threat to the residents of the parishes throughout Louisiana. However this has not been the case. Caldwell further went on to state that, “There are too many unknowns at this point, and it is absurd to transport potentially hazardous Ebola waste across state lines,” he continued, “This situation is certainly unprecedented, and we

want to approach it with the utmost caution.” He concluded that, “We just can’t afford to take any risks when it comes to this deadly virus.”

We MUST Understand that it is impossible to kill something that is already dead. Therefore, what I am not understanding is that if the CDC has already found that this infection can not be passed once it has been properly disposed of then what is the problem with Louisiana.

This leads me to believe that this is not just about the safety of the people but a larger unseen and unspoken factor.

So to that I state if that ain’t what you call, “burning a brother twice” then what is?

Even from the grave this man is still not able to rest in peace. I mean how much more is this suppose to go on?

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, TX (METRO) will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at noon to receive public comment regarding proposed January 2015 service changes. The proposed service changes include: Schedule changes to the 46, 52, 82, 86, 87, 97, 217, 221, 222, 228, 229, 244, 246, 247, 256, and 265 bus routes. Route changes on the 6, 20, 36, 40, 50, 85, and 131 bus routes (to accommodate the reconstruction and partial closure of Dallas Street). Discontinuation of the 285 Kingsland/Uptown bus route.

The public hearing will be held in the METRO Board Room on the 2nd floor at 1900 Main Street, Houston, TX (served by METRO routes 3, 9, 11, 30, 44, 52, 56, 60, 66, 77, 78, 88, 102, 108, 249, and METRORail). The meeting will also be streamed live on RideMETRO.org.

HOUSTON - Recently, Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee and State Representative Harold Dutton participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly constructed Wellness Center at the Julia C. Hester House. The Wellness Center’s main objective is to, “be utilized to improve the quality of life in the community.”

The Julia C. Hester House is a 71-year-old nonprofit settlement house and community center in the Fifth Ward area. Since its origin the community center has maintained one true mission. That Pre-mission has been to, “enhance the quality of life in Houston’s Fifth Ward and surrounding communities through programs and services that promote self-empowerment.”

Furthermore, “it provides youth and senior services, as well as family and social services.”

Although the Hester House has remained true to its mission, the services offered to many youth throughout the years has superseded it.

Insomuch that great athletes, musicians, politicians, leaders, teachers and a plethora of other talents have walked through the doors of the Hester House.

Even now over three-score and ten years later, the Hester House is still continuing to lay foundations for the Fifth Ward community and neighboring youth. The opening of the Wellness Center which is a 24,535-square-foot facility has only added to the enhancement of the center that has served to be a revitalization tool for the Fifth Ward community. The TX- 4

Wellness Center includes: a gym, weight room and an enclosed, five-lane, 25-meter pool. This addition was provided for by a $4 million grant from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission secured by Representative Harold V. Dutton, Jr.. Dutton is especially grateful for the completion and opening of this facility for more reasons than one. He is one of the successful individuals that has came through the doors of the Hester House and knew how instrumental the center has played throughout the years to a slew of individuals. As Dutton embraced the podium his face was adorned with great delight and joy. He stated in response to the $4 million grant that he was able to attain that he’d told many, “We are going to build a community with this money.” Dutton went on to reveal that “We are going to start with the Hester House. But what we are building is not a building. What we are building is not an enclosed swimming pool. We are not building a health-and-fitness center. What we are building is community because I believe Hester House is the start of a rebuild of this community.” The gymnasium at the Wellness Center has been named in honor of the representative, it is the Harold V. Dutton Jr. Recreation Center.

Representative Dutton did not stand alone in his glee for the grand-opening of the Wellness Center. Harris County Precinct One’s Commissioner El Franco Lee, also a product of the Hester House was at the joyful occasion.

“NO COVER -- NO PROTECTION -- NO VOICE” for Minorities in Waller County

WALLER COUNTYSylvia Cedillo, victim of selective prosecution and racial discrimination and Waller County DA Elton Mathis the Chief Executive Officer of False and Selective Prosecution is to give the advantage to the White majority by dirtying the waters and creating doubt and distrust causing integrity issues with minorities. In most cases ruining their jobs reputations and political careers. The Waller county DA uses his power position and authority to help eliminate the competition. Elton Mathis’ actions behind the motivation in most cases are detrimental to the victims. A prime example was arresting attorney Sylvia Cedillo who was running for political office. Mathis later dismissed the indictment charges after the damage was done to the aspiring judge losing voter support causing mistrust in the community for Cedillo.

Cedillo is again running for judge this election but now is left to overcome the political damage and destruction created by Elton Mathis. Now Cedillo’s opponent Trey Duhon and Mathis’ buddy,’ is left to “pick the bones” left over by Elton Mathis thus helping to eliminate or minimize the competition. A true corrupt political system disempowering qualified minorities.

Another example is Delma Flores- Smith the now former superintendent of Hempstead ISD, ousted after Mathis ordered a grand jury indictment pertaining to

a “government document” this government document is her own resume where an updated address change was alleged to be made. What the public needs to know in this scenario, is that the superintendent’s files were reported stolen in November, which included her resume.

The records were under the care and direct supervision of the former Human Resource Director and now Interim Superintendent, Marcia Lawton, who by the way does not have the qualifications for the position for superintendent. Oh what a coincidence! Looks more like an intentional set up.

Talk about Motive! What better motive than to take the office and salary of the superintendent.

Power and money creates corruption. What the public needs to know is Marcia Lawton was kicked out of her previous district in Trinity ISD for lack of integrity, confidentiality and record keeping of the districts Special Education files.

Confidentiality and integrity of records is clearly a pattern with Lawton.

The Catch All 1. Lawton was elected by the new board members along with board president Sharlonda Rutledge solely to oust the superintendent.

Flores- Smith made some heavy decisions when the business manager was found guilty by the school board and their attorney for misappropriating funds funneling district money to her own plumbing company and giving herself unauthorized and substantial pay raises. The business manager Sharon Loukanis had been practicing these improprieties for years and right under the nose of most infamous and notorious 18-year veteran board member Kay

Kloecker. Kloecker played a major role in a campaign to oust the new Latino superintendent. However Kloecker never raised a question or concern of the business managers illegal actions in her 18 years of service as a board member. It is known that Loukanis is a relative of a board member. Another difficult decision made by Flores-Smith and the board was to terminate the Middle School Principal Amy Lacey for publicly announcing that Spanish speakers were prohibited from speaking Spanish and would be punished if they did so.

What the public NEEDS to a know is Lacey had a troubled past with racial discrimination issues. Racial discrimination complaints had been filed by parents and teachers against Amy Lacey in previous years with no recourse or resolve. Another unpopular decision made by Flores- Smith was to terminate the former Police Chief Gerald Robinson for not investigating a serious terrorist act against the students of Hempstead when brake lines were cut affecting 3 school buses. Students were transported on the buses with the cut brake lines placing the students in severe danger.

Robinson is the common law husband of the board president Sharlonda Rutledge.

2. The interim superintendent Marcia Lawton hires Gerald Robinson back to the district as soon as she gets in office.

3. Board member Connie Wawarofsky, a staunch supporter of Amy Lacey and the business manager Sharon Loukanis, ran for the board solely to a oust the New Latino Superintendent.

Wawarofsky has evaded charges of Child Abuse against 2 African-American students while she was

employed with the district.

According to the students and their parents Wawarofsky kicked and punched the children while other students were allowed to do the same. What the public NEEDS to know is this was actually a Hate Crime when Wawarofsky confronted an African-American teacher, her supervisor, stating she hated “ Black people”. Wawarofsky was never investigated by the district attorney Elton Mathis nor charged or indicted. Wawarofsky has now become a board member over the very children she has abused and given responsibility and authority over.

Not only was she not indicted but Wawarofsky has also secured a school district cleaning contract for her and her husband given

by Interim Superintendent Lawton. Wow the benefits of Corruption!

4. Larkin Aiken attorney and friend of Mathis evades arrest while driving under the influence, driving on the wrong side of the highway at speeds of a over 100 MPH , flips his car while on a high speed chase from DPS officers, walks away with no consequence.

Larkin Aiken was taken to the hospital for first aid and driven home, never arrested or charged for wreck less endangerment, evading arrest or DUI. Oh what is must be like to be White and be on the right side of Elton Mathis the CEO of False and Selective Prosecution.

Mathis, the school district business manager was never indicted even after proven by the districts own counsel to have grossly misappropriated tax payer funds goes without consequence from DA Mathis. Connie Wawarofsky was witnessed abusing the child and the DA has yet to investigate or make a charge, again no consequence.

Attorney Sylvia Cedillo gets arrested and indicted for frivolous charges that are later dismissed . Former Superintendent Flores- Smith gets indicted on frivolous misdemeanor charges.

Another commonality between the two Latino female Leaders is they both have African-American husbands which would make them prime targets for Mathis’ unwritten policy of False and Selective Prosecution.

Grier Named National Educator of the Year

HOUSTON - The Council of the Great City Schools awarded Houston Independent School District Superintendent Terry Grier the 2014 Urban Educator of the Year award Thursday in Milwaukee during its annual fall conference.

Grier was recognized for his ability to accelerate academic gains that produce a higher graduation rate, especially among African-American and Hispanic students and for substantially decreasing the student dropout rate, said Council Executive Director Michael Casserly.

“Superintendent Terry Grier knows how to confront challenges in urban education and has the commitment, experience and energy to overcome the odds to provide a quality education for students,” said Casserly.

The award is given to a school leader who demonstrates success in the areas of leadership and governance, has been in instrumental in improving student achievement district wide, improved the public’s confidence in his or her school district and who embodies professionalism and has been involved in the council.

Under Grier’s leadership, the district’s dropout rate is down 44 percentage points, with vast improvement among Hispanic and AfricanAmerican students, who have seen decreases of 54 percent and 31 percent respectively.

In 2013, HISD was awarded the prestigious Broad Prize for Urban Education which recognizes the nation’s top big-city school district for consistently making strong gains in student achievement and comes with $550,000 in college scholarships.

Additionally, HISD won nearly $30 million in competitive federal Race to the Top funding last year, which is supporting the district’s work to connect students’ coursework to real-world career pathways. The learning model lets students begin college early and encourages career readiness through project-based learning. Students explore aptitudes and life interests in middle school and focus on preparedness for higher education and careers in high school.

Grier has also led HISD through several key initiatives: * The district has increased a college culture by expanding access to college-level Advanced Placement courses at every HISD high school.

The change has led to a 74 percent increase in AP exams passed with a score of 3 or higher.

Scholarship dollars awarded to HISD seniors in 2014 were at an all-time high of $254 million, up 213 percent from 2007. * The increases in participation in Advanced Placement exams for all students and specifically

for Hispanic students were the highest among other urban districts. Between 2009 and 2012, the average annual increase in the AP participation rate by Houston’s Hispanic students was five times greater than the average among the 75 Broad Prize-eligible districts. * Nearly $18 million was raised from private donors to fund a turnaround initiative for HISD’s 20 lowest-performing schools. The initiative, called Apollo 20, helped students in those schools achieve academic gains on-par with the nation’s top-performing charter schools. * The district won 69 percent voter approval for the largest school-rebuilding bond program in Texas history. Forty schools, including 29 high schools, are being repaired or rebuilt and new IT infrastructure is being constructed throughout the district. * HISD seamlessly welcomed about 7,000 North Forest community students in 2013 after Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams ordered their former district closed. * As of this fall, HISD has implemented two phases of its PowerUp initiative that will give all 65,000 HISD high school students their own laptops by 2016.

Dr. Grier was chosen from a field of five finalists including Miami-Dade County Superintendent Albert Carvalho; R. Stephen Green, head of Kansas City, Mo., public schools;

Valerie Silva of the St. Paul public schools; and Eric Gordon, Chief Executive Officer of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

In addition to the recognition, Grier will receive a $10,000 college scholarship to present to a student.

The Urban Educator of the Year award alternates every other year between a superintendent and a school board member. It is given in honor of Richard R. Green, the first African-American chancellor of the New York City school system, and Edward Garner, who served on the Denver school board.
