AUSTIN - The University of Texas at Austin will offer the course, “Beyoncé Feminism, Rihanna Womanism” to undergraduate students next spring. The course will examine Black feminism topics such as “violence, economic opportunity, sexuality, standards of beauty, and creative self-expression.”

The school also offers other race, gender, and sexuality theory courses and student resources such as the Malcolm X Lounge.

AUSTIN - A federal judge has approved a settlement between the city of Austin and the U.S. Department of Justice over allegations the Austin Fire Department's hiring practices were discriminatory. The order signed by U.S. District Court Judge Lee Yeakel on Friday allows the Fire Department to resume hiring cadets, a process the city suspended while the federal government investigated whether the department discriminated against African-American and Latino candidates in 2012 and 2013, the Austin American-Statesman reports. The Justice Department argued that a written test disproportionately eliminated AfricanAmerican and Hispanic candidates without the Fire Department proving that the scoring method properly measured would-be cadets, the newspaper reported.

CONROE - Adrian Peterson recently took a plea bargain on the child-abuse charges against him. He now wants to return back to the field and is prepared to sue the NFL if it is held against him and keeps him from playing.

DALLAS - Officer Edward Boyd alleges that refusing to join the Black Police Association cost him his off-duty, uniformed security job at a South Dallas clinic. Sgt. Cletus Judge works there and coordinates the job for other officers. Boyd states that after Judge realized he was Black but not apart of the BPA he was called in the office and coversations summed up as to join or he would lose his off duty job.

Submit your news to news@aframnews.com DALLAS - A lawyer for the family of the only Ebola patient in the United States to die says the hospital that treated him will create a foundation in his name. Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian native, died at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on Oct. 8. Attorney Les Weisbrod said Wednesday in Dallas that the foundation in honor of Thomas Eric Duncan will assist other Ebola victims in West Africa. Weisbrod said the foundation is part of a larger settlement that will "take care" of Duncan's four children and his parents. Duncan has four children, ranging in age from 12 to 22.

According to a document released

by Weisbrod, Duncan’s nephew, Josephus Weeks, will work with Texas Health Resources Foundation (THR) to fight Ebola by seeking contributions to the fund to assist those in Africa. Weeks would like a state-of-the-art advanced treatment center to be built in Liberia, in memory of his late uncle.

FORT WORTH - Almost six years after taking the reins of the Fort Worth Police Department, Chief Jeff Halstead will announce Tuesday that he will be stepping down in January, a source said.

Halstead did not respond to messages but a source said Halstead will retire effective Jan. 9.

JASPER - Public disgust has faded, but Byrd's family said they can never forget, especially when online auction houses offer morbid reminders to the highest bidder.

Murderauction.com lists four items with a connection to John W. King or Shawn A. Berry, two of three men convicted in Bird's death.

King, 39, is on death row at the prison system's Polunsky Unit near Livingston. Berry, also 39, is serving a life sentence at the Ramsey Unit in Rosharon. The third man, Lawrence A. Brewer, was executed in September 2011 at age 44.

PEARLAND - The family of a Marine combat veteran from Houston missing since late August appealed to the public on Wednesday for helping finding their loved one. Rodrick Darnell Cassell, 24, has not been seen since the early hours of Aug. 29. According to Houston police Cassell told his girlfriend just after midnight that he was going to meet friends in the 11900 block of Hunkler Drive in Southeast Houston near Pearland. After a few hours of not hearing from him his girlfriend alerted family members and later police. HPD’s missing persons unit worked the case for a month before homicide took it on. Cassell was driving a 2007 Black Toyota Camry with Texas license plates number CTS-3800 when he went missing nearly three months ago.

PEARLAND - The 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Program has recognized seven Pearland Independent School District students for their academic success.

Semifinalists: Naomi Andu (DHS, Tyler Davis (DHS), Dwayne Williams (PHS), Kelleyeanne Kelley (TCCHS); Outstanding Participants: Elizabeth Asonye (DHS), Alyah Scott (DHS), Nneoma Oradiegwu (TCCHS). Students requested consideration in the 2015 program when they took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test during their junior year.

SAN ANTONIO - Americans caught a glimpse of the Republican Party’s future. Mia Love, from Utah, became the first AfricanAmerican Republican woman to be elected to Congress. Will Hurd of San Antonio is a 37-year-old former CIA undercover operative became Texas’ first African-American Republican* congressman since Reconstruction. He won the only close race for the U.S. House of Representative in the entire state Tuesday. He narrowly defeated Rep. Pete Gallego, D-Alpine, 49.78 percent to 47.66 percent, in a district that is majority Hispanic and stretches 800 miles, from San Antonio to El Paso, along the U.S.Mexican border. And Tim Scott, from South Carolina, became the first African-American senator from the South since Reconstruction.

He’s also the first to be elected to both the House and Senate. These historic wins mark a turning point in the Republican Party’s relationship with African Americans.

After last Tuesday’s devastating results in the midterm elections with Democrats losing control of the Senate and other vital seats, including several governors’ races, many were frustrated. I myself was extremely disappointed by Democrats that ran away from President Obama, and even more importantly, ran away from his policies and successes like the Affordable Care Act, an improved economy, lower unemployment rates, criminal justice reform initiatives and much more.

As I was tempted to wallow in disgust and indignation, the president made an inspiring announcement: his nomination for the next Attorney General, Loretta Lynch. In every sense of the word, she is a rose in the midst of thorns.

Ask anyone who has ever worked with, dealt with or interacted with Lynch and they will tell you that she is fair, courageous and serious when it comes to upholding the law. I had the pleasure of knowing her in 1997 when she was a senior prosecutor in the case against NYPD officers accused of beating and sodomizing Haitian immigrant Abner Louima. Though she was extremely dedicated and always balanced, she never sought headlines; for her it was always about doing effective work. And while she was part of the team that successfully prosecuted the case against the officers in the Louima incident, she could never be attacked as being anti-police because there were other cases which she did not take on, like the one against the cops involved in the shooting death of Sean Bell.

Despite her tremendous track record, Lynch has kept an extremely low-profile and humbly continued her work prosecuting a range of criminals from terrorists to corrupt politicians. Last year, she an-

nounced a massive immigration bust at 7-Eleven stores in Virginia and New York accused of running a modern-day plantation system.

She has overseen the prosecution of several elected officials, including Pedro Espada Jr., a former Democratic New York State Senator and William F. Boyland Jr., a Democratic Assemblyman from Brooklyn. She also led the investigation of Republican Rep. Michael Grimm of Staten Island who was indicted on 20 counts earlier this year.

Lynch and her team have previously prosecuted several terrorism cases, including one against the men attempting to blow up bombs in subways in New York City. As if these accolades weren’t enough, she has also worked for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, established by the UN Security Council to “prosecute persons responsible for genocide and other serious violations of international humanitarian law.” Lynch is without a doubt a consummate professional whose entire career embodies impartiality and justice.

When current AG Holder announced his resignation, many, including myself, were saddened to hear the news. For those of us in the civil rights community, we were pleased to see Holder take on modern-day challenges like voter suppression, sentencing disparities and ways to reform the criminal justice system overall. Once he stated his intent to resign, we were all clearly anxious to see who his replacement would be. My great fear was that after the groundbreaking work Holder did preserving civil rights, voting rights and more, his established agenda would be compromised. But I am pleased to see that Lynch is someone who will continue the tradition that he began.

I know many Americans may feel disillusioned after last week. There is a lot of reflection that we must do as individuals, as communities, as leaders and as those who are on the side of progress.

Embrace Your Own Skin!

he first African-American woman to travel on what many of us know as the Space Shuttle Endeavor in September of 1992; once made reference to a thought that more members of the Black community should adhere to.

Mae C. Jemison stated, “Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It’s your place in the world; it’s your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live.” I believe if anyone has a right to make this statement or offer these words then definitely she is.

We MUST Understand that too many members of the Black community, especially within our younger generation; have forgotten who they are and where they come from.

In some cases, these individuals do not even know who they are to begin with. Oftentimes, this leads to our children getting lost and mixed in with other cultures and races, and ultimately they take on characters that are not of themselves.

However, I think that it is careful to denote that as parents, teachers, leaders and educators it is important to teach our children and students things regarding their history and existence.

I can remember when, there was a time when most Black families would pass on names from one generation to the next to avoid the family losing its namesake.

Especially in the Black culture, men were privileged to have sons and not only have sons but to name their sons after them and/or their parents.

Primarily because it meant that the family’s name would live on.

Nowadays, there are some young men that have children and could care less about the name or anything else. This has become a grave issue in our communities because it is all connected with Embracing Your Own Skin. Not only that, this has an affect on Black owned businesses that have remained within certain families for

years.

Although the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. exclaimed in one of his infamous speeches that, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Now, you may can ask some individuals that lived during that era if they believed that we have arrived at that point in history and some may respond, “yes”!

But, We MUST Understand that there is still just something about this Blackness. Because the reality is that we still have a ways to go.

If you don’t believe me just take a moment to recollect the last few years with the country being under the leadership and administration of President Barack Obama. The man is a walking genius and by far one of the most intelligent presidents this country has had, yet even he being in the highest seat in this nation that any man or woman can occupy still has to work five times as hard as each president that has proceeded him. And guess what?

At the end of the day, that’s still not good enough.

However, the president along with his wife or ideal of the example that I am stressing in this editorial, Embrace Your Own Skin. It is quite obvious that this 44th president and his wife has done just that. They are comfortable with being who they are and as a member of the AfricanAmerican race when you do that, please believe that no one can place restrictions or limitations on where you go nor how high you want to go once you get there.

When an individual remains confident in his or her skin there is a sense of security and some may say, “arrogance”. Call it what you will or may just as long as you realize that it’s a walking success story. I don’t believe that having a certain form of arrogance is all that bad anyhow, but that’s just my opinion.

We MUST Understand

You have to know who you are period. Now many of us Africans living in America have become, “too good” in modern-times to label themselves as “AfricanAmericans”. I have heard some say, “I have never even been to Africa so I ain’t no African-American.” That is one of the most foolish thoughts I’ve heard. If your origin, forefathers all come from a specific region around the world then you better believe that is apart of your history.

Long before Black people were brought to America to work as slaves, they were kings, queens, princes and princesses. So don’t fool yourself Black History didn’t start in America at all. Embrace yourself and your roots which in most cases originated in Africa.

We MUST Understand that when you are truly confident within the skin that you are in, nobody can change the way that you feel about yourself.

It never ceases to amaze me how many of our young Black women go out purchasing different things to adorn themselves to look like individuals from other races and cultures; then on the flip side there are other races and cultures that are spending thousands to millions of dollars on having surgical procedures to get features that Black women genetically inherited. Again I state, Embrace Your Own Skin!

Concluding I would just like to echo the words of Marcus Garvey who said that, “The Black skin is not a badge of shame, but rather a glorious symbol of national greatness.” Therefore, to the faithful and loyal readers of African-American News&Issues, please make note that this is not just a slogan, but it is a principle that you can live by.

Davesus Omosun, is another bright young scholar who was turned away from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund his “Locks”.

This statement was quoted by one of the candidates selected to participate in the 2014 Leadership Institute held by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Davesus Omosun. This was after he and another student Tamon George were discriminated against, by TMCF because they wear dreadlocks.

However, in order to best underTX- 4

stand the feelings of discriminated candidates like Davesus Omosun and Tamon George, one must first fully understand what the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Leadership Institute conference is and how it relates to these talented young men.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund This College Fund is named in honor of the first African-American United States Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall.

According to the organization’s history it was established in 1987,

by Dr. N. Joyce Payne in cooperation with Miller Brewing Co., Sony Music, the National Basketball Association, Reebok and the American Association for State Colleges and Universities. TMCF supports and represents nearly 300,000 students attending its 47 member-schools that include public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), medical schools and law schools. TMCF helps students with a clear intention and the motivation to succeed and acquire a high-quality college education at an affordable cost.

It is the only national organization to provide scholarships, programmatic and capacity building support to the 47 public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and to date has awarded more than $200 million in such assistance to its students and member-schools. TMCF member-schools are a vital source of higher education for all students and more than 80% of all students enrolled in HBCUs attend TMCF member-schools.

Leadership Institute Conference The Leadership Institute Conference is a 14-year-old program that is associated and hosted by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. It is described as being one that, “develops students’ leadership skills, introduces various career opportunities, creates a community of scholars, provides companies access to a talented and diverse student population, and helps students to make connections that lead to internships and full-time positions” according to TMCF’s website.

Interviews are conducted throughout the spring and fall semesters of each year. Once chosen to be a part of the conference these accomplished students are named “TMCF Scholars”. The conference lasts for four days and is held in Washington, D.C. This year’s conference was

held at the Washington Hilton on November 9-13.

This history is vital in denoting because TMCF consistently makes it a point to express that it prides itself in being the, “ONLY national organization to provide scholarships, programmatic and capacity building support to the 47 public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).”

Emphasis have been placed on the fact that the fund thrives off of being a supportive aid to the 47 public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This in part because the program states that it supports Black colleges and universities, yet it denies and has prohibited the display of one of the hairstyles most commonly associated with the progenitors of the Black race, “Dreadlocks”.

History of Dreadlocks Many people have referred to dreadlocks as, “locks” “locs” or “dreads”. Dreadlocks are simply matted coils of hair. Individuals from various ethnic groups wear dreadlocks and for a plethora of reasons. However the origin of dreadlocks stems from inhabitants of North Africa, Ethiopia, Southeast Africa, Kenya and Nigeria which are all cultures that help describe where African-Americans have evolved. While African-Americans are descendants of such cultures not all members embrace their genesis.

Though members of various African ethnic groups wear “locks”, the styles and significance have the tendency to change from one group to another. They can be worn as a symbol of: spiritual conviction, ethnic pride, a political statement or even just as a fashion preference. In the ancient and eastern world, ties of dreadlocks are believed to have emerged from certain Biblical characters. It is further believed by some that even the earliest Christians were known to have worn “locks”.

Victims of Discrimination: Davesus Omosun and Tamon George Davesus Omosun just recently graduated with a Master’s degree in Adult Education. He has worked within the school system for three years in Baltimore City. He has plans of pursuing a career in higher education and tentatively plans to launch a non-profit organization called FearLessMen Enterprises, Inc. During an interview, Davesus recalled how honored he was when he first got the invitation

to participate in the Leadership Institute. He expressed that, “as a former graduate of Coppin State University and a Teacher Quality and Retention Program Fellow; I was extremely excited about the opportunity to learn from some of the industries finest who had found success within their given professions. I had planned accordingly and prepared to represent myself, CSU and TMCF with the utmost pride and professionalism.”

He spent several hundred dollars on just getting prepared for the event. Therefore, when he arrived he stated that he, “was unaware of the breadth and depth of a despicable policy which had been put in place to segregate and discriminate against Black men.”

He went on to say, “This policy to ban men with dreadlocks from attending LI is completely degrading and repulsive; after taking the time to plan and spend money to attend the conference and then denied the opportunity and access to further myself and career is unbelievable.” Davesus could not believe that TMCF officials had the audacity to suggest that he go and cut his dreadlocks in order to participate in the conference. He revealed his motivation for growing dreadlocks was ridiculed because of the blatant disregard infringed upon him. He added, “my decision to grow and dread lock my hair came from a spiritual place to represent an outward expression of an inner spiritual growth and maturity there is nothing negative about my dreadlocks nor about my demeanor or presence.”

Davesus said that he prides himself in not being among the negative stereotypes that continues to plague Black men - never been in jail and no criminal record.

Finally he stated, “to be rejected from an organization without even given the chance to show my talent, character, personality, expertise, etc. is truly heartbreaking and extremely disappointing; and I am thoroughly ashamed and appalled by this policy.”

Tamon George is a Canadian citizen who has lived in the United States for nearly two years. He has an undergraduate degree in Finance and Economics. George is currently a MBA student at the University of the District of Columbia and an intern at an Embassy in Washington, who focuses on internet regulation and telecommunication policy.

NONPROFIT CREATED TO DEVELOP MENTORS TO INCREASE MENTORING EFFECTIVENESS HOUSTON – This fall, mentors and mentees will have a new resource to assist them in their individual development and collective goals with the launch of The Collective Generational Mentoring Foundation (TCGMF). The organization was created to address the needs of individuals in a mentoring relationship to improve the positive outcomes associated with productive mentoring relationships. The foundation is led by Houston resident and community leader Eric Lyons, whose work has impacted hundreds of Houstonians as an independent strategic consultant and as the former President of both the Greater Houston Black Chamber, the local chamber of commerce aimed at increasing economic opportunities for African-American-owned businesses, and the National Black MBA Association – Houston Chapter.

“My profession and personal work has been centered on improving outcomes for certain populations in the community and mentoring youth and young adults came as a natural extension of that,” said Lyons. “I take as much if not more satisfaction seeing the individuals I have mentored succeed in their professional endeavors.”

TCGMF’s concept was organically created by a group of young adults commonly referred to as “the collective association,” who shared several things in common: • 1) a mentoring relationship with Lyons focused on assisting them with college preparation, career exposure, professional development and leadership skills and • 2) the desire to give back to their community by improving the lives of other youth and young adults, specifically African-American males.

The composition of the board of directors and advocates (advisory board) are filled with former and current mentees who have united with the goal of opening pathways and helping others become more equipped and prepared for their careers and life.

“I was a high school sophomore when I was introduced to mentoring and Eric Lyons through the National Black MBA Association’s Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) program. The experience was life changing- Eric not only became a role model for me in my life, but also a very dear friend,” recalled Chris Shuler, a TCGMF Board Member. “There is no better way I can give back to the man who has given me so much than by assisting in the creation of this foundation. I believe in its mission and

know with Eric at helm, the foundation will help change many young people’s lives.”

TCGMF will provide a scholarship program, financial assistance for professional and personal development activities and host an annual conference addressing the challenges and rewards of a valuable mentoring relationship. The website www.tcgmf.org will serve a public online portal for individuals looking for programming and resources of best practices.

Starting today through December 31, TCGMF will launch its inaugural capital campaign. The goal is to raise $10,000 from individuals and partners. Donated funds will be used for educational grants and to host the first Mentoring Summit that will be held in Summer 2015.

Bishop Elect C.D. Boulden hosts, Soaring with Eagles

HOUSTON - Recently, the Real Worship Center Inc. along with Bishop-Elect C.D. Boulden held the 6th Annual REAL People Awards ceremony, the theme of the day Soaring with Eagles. The event took place at Brady’s Landing located at 8505 Cypress St., 77012. Pastors, politicians, attorneys, judges and a gallery of residents throughout the Greater Houston area gathered to attend the event. Fancy hats, distinguished suits, smiling faces and a sweet-smelling aroma permeated the South Grand Ballroom as guests arrived and were seated at their perspective tables. Bishop-Elect Boulden comically engaged the audience before the beginning of the ceremony. To allow guests to get more comfortable and enjoy the ambiance that mirrored throughout the room; he encouraged everyone to look at their neighbor before the afternoon even started and tell them, “You look nice!”

Bishop-Elect stated, “we just going to keep it real in here today.”

As the afternoon went on the audience enjoyed the soothing, jazzy and sensational tunes of Saxophonist, Edmund Baker, Jr..

Pastor J. Dabney started the brunch off by greeting everyone that came out to support Bishop-Elect’s annual awards ceremony.

Pastor R.E. Daniels followed by reading the scripture and Pastor R.G. Holiday offered words of prayer and supplication to the Almighty Father. A talented praise dancer by the name of, “Renee” demonstrated her gift by gracing the stage. Minister LaKethia Green provided the Spoken Word, which gave the audience good food for thought as well as convicting anyone that sat in the “seat of the scornful”, while sitting in the house of God and having a judgmental eye and aura about themselves. Lady Ledet led a powerful, soul-stirring solo, First Things First.

Bishop-Elect then gave out his first set of awards which were the: Bishop-Elect, Dr. J.J. Roberson, Albert Boulden, Bishop Robert Jefferson and Mother Bobbie Neal Jones. Minister Darnell Williams blessed the audience with a ministry in dance.

After which, more awards were given by Bishop-Elect which he named The Eagle’s Honorees. Smiles were seen galore as each member was called to the stage to be presented with the awards.

Awards were presented to noble and esteemed leaders throughout the City of Houston that have been inspirational and offered tremendous amounts of servitude towards the religious, political

and communities sectors. Amongst some of the honorees present were: State Representative Sylvester Turner, Bishops G. Emerson Scott and O.D. Ledet and Election Judge and Precinct Chair Willie Boone, just to list a few.

Pastor T.C. Whitten sung Amazing Grace and Pastor Lee Price blessed the food. Attendees enjoyed a delicious buffet style brunch and once everyone was seated and had eaten, GGG’s Fashion and T & J Models put on an awesome fashion show.

Other beautifully arranged musical performances were rendered by Urgency, Trinity and Yolanda Brown. Many of the recipients of the awards after receiving praise and adoration

by Bishop Elect C.D. Boulden graciously gave him the utmost accolades for being selfless and giving to others. Unlike most traditional pastors and bishops, Elect C.D. Boulden does not have a Pastoral Appreciation or Anniversary. Instead he believes in uplifting and bestowing the honor on others that he believes have lived and lead exemplary lives.

HOUSTON - Recently, the Acres Homes Chamber for Business and Economic Development held its Monthly Business Networking Luncheon at the Beulah Ann Shepard building located at 6112 Wheatley St., 77091. Various members of the community, educators, lawyers, political representations, individuals from the banking industry and spiritual leaders all gathered to attend.

The luncheon was initiated by Chairman Roy Douglas Malonson. A raffle drawing was held and several attendees won door prizes. Cortland Boyd owner of Boyd Funeral Home also raffled away a plant from Shirley Ann’s Black Kollectibles & Flowers. Julie Johnson, principal of A.B. Anderson Academy was the proud recipient of the plant.

Harper Alternative School’s Culinary Department provided the food for the event. Raymond K. Glass, the principal of Harper introduced the teacher Mrs. Castillo, her assistants and the students that prepared the meal.

Meanwhile, musical selections were performed throughout the event by the Carver Magnet High School Jazz Band under the leadership of Mike McCullough. Dr. Wanda Bamberg, the Superintendent of Aldine Independent School District was also present and introduced the principal of Carver Magnet High School, Rosalyn Sweat. Dr. Bamberg stated that she was, “proud of her students”.

Continuing, attendants of the event introduced themselves and commenced to eating lunch as much networking was done throughout this process. Once everyone had been served lunch and attendees were seated, Chairman Roy Malonson acknowledged several other members that came

Following, Chairman Malonson invited Vanessa Reed who is the South Texas Community Reinvestment Act Manager of Comerica Bank, up to the podium to introduce the first speaker. She first applauded the chairman for all that he does for the community and stated that, “people like him help me do my job.”

She then went on to present Irv Ashford, Jr. (Senior Vice President of Community Development and External Affairs – Dallas), who has been a part of Comerica for over fourteen years. He revealed that Comerica is headquartered in Dallas and are, “strategically aligned in three business segments, Business Bank, Retail Bank and Wealth Management.” As he continued he explained more about Comerica and, “how it partners with various non-profits around Houston to fulfill its promise of what a bank should be in the community.” As he concluded he stated, “We can’t be successful as a bank unless you guys do well.”

Once Irv Ashford had completed his message, he then introduced the final speaker, Brent Harraman (Sr. VP, Manager, Community Development); who he stated was well-educated and responsible for 15 other managers throughout the nation. Finally Ashford said, “if you want to meet the MAN, this is him.”

American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) Hosts its Second Annual Energy Workshop and Encourages African -Americans to Get Involved in Energy

What do people like Benjamin Banneker, David Crosthwait Jr., Frederick M. Jones, Charles W. Chappelle, and Lonnie Johnson have in common? All of these people are Black scientists and inventors who have created energy products and made contributions to the energy industry. Benjamin Banneker created the wooden clock and played a role in setting the original boundaries for the city of Washington D.C. as a land surveyor. David Crosthwait Jr. was a research engineer who made contributions to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Crosthwait received 40 U.S. patents relating to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

Frederick Jones invented refrigerated truck systems. Charles Chappelle designed the long-distance flight airplane. He was also the first Black person to display the airplane in the first industrial air show held in New York City in 1911. Lonnie Johnson is a mechanical engineer who invented the Super Soaker water gun and worked with NASA while researching thermal energy transfer engines.

Although these Black energy pioneers have worked hard to make contributions to the energy industry and pave the way for future generaTX-10

tions to pursue careers in energy, there is still a great need for more Black youth to pursue careers in energy and in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

Today, Black youth often shy away from energy and STEM based jobs due to stereotypes, economic problems, and a lack of support from their communities and peers. One of President Obama’s goals is to debunk the myth that green jobs are not for African-Americans.

With an increased demand for energy, science, and math based jobs and high unemployment rates among African-Americans, more Black people will have to pursue careers in the math and sciences. The Black unemployment rate is approximately 11% while the national unemployment rate is approximately 6%. Only 7% of STEM bachelor’s degrees are earned

by Black students.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), over 6.5 million green jobs have been created worldwide.

1 million of those jobs were created in 2013. The largest concentration of jobs are in China, Brazil, America, India, and Germany. Out of all of these countries, China has the greatest

amount of jobs at 2.6 million green jobs. The United States comes in third place with 625,000 green jobs.

Although energy job creation is growing around the world, obstacles such as changes in energy policies and a lack of skilled workers are preventing some people from getting these jobs.

According to IRENA, policy changes in Australia have caused 23,000 solar energy employees to lose their jobs in 2013. Another 23,000 jobs were lost in Spain in 2008. Companies in many countries say that they are struggling to fill positions because there are not enough qualified candidates applying for jobs. According to a survey conducted by IRENA, 78% of employers said that it was very difficult to find well-trained staff.

Careers in the STEM categories are also some of the fastest growing careers that include: software engineer with a 46% growth rate in the next 10 years, medical scientist with a 34% growth rate in the next 10 years, and biotechnology research scientist with a 17% growth rate in the next 10 years.

Despite the rapid job growth in energy and STEM careers, minorities are still expected to remain underrepresented in these careers. “About 200,000 jobs will be created in oil & gas by 2020.” “Approximately 20,000 of these jobs will be filled by AfricanAmericans and 80,000 of these jobs will be filled by other minority groups”, said Daniel Guidry, who works in oil & gas and who served as a keynote speaker at the 2nd Annual AABE Energy Workshop. This means that Black people will only make up a tenth of the workforce in oil & gas just a few years from now. This also means Black people must be willing to pursue careers in the energy and STEM or else we will still be where we are at right now and that means a large number of us unemployed and unable to create better lives for ourselves.

The U.S. Department of Education has developed the Committee on STEM education (CoSTEM) in an effort to motivate minorities to pursue careers in energy, science, and math.

This committee will reorganize STEM education programs by devoting more funds to PreK-12 STEM education,

increasing public and youth engagement with STEM subjects, improving STEM education in colleges and universities, better serving minorities who have been historically underrepresented in STEM subjects, and redesigning graduate STEM education to prepare students for the workforce of the future. President Obama has also designated a total of $170 million in the 2015 Fiscal Year budget for STEM education and programs.

It’s great that the President and the U.S. Department of Education are doing something to motivate minorities to participate in science and math, but we can’t rely on the government to do all of the work for us. We have to roll up our sleeves and do some work too. The American Association for Blacks in Energy (AABE) is a perfect example of Black people doing something to encourage more Black people to pursue careers and education in energy and STEM subjects.

“AABE gives students the opportunity to network with energy professionals”, says Autumn Bean, Interim Vice President of AABE Houston.

“There is a change in demographics where older energy workers are retiring and their positions need to be filled by a new generation of workers.” She continued “More energy companies are also looking to diversify their workforce; One of AABE’s goals is to share our knowledge about energy with Black youth in order to motivate more students to pursue careers in energy.” “Our other goal is to educate the Black community and encourage Black people to voice their concerns about energy legislation, developments of energy policies and regulations, and environmental issues,” says Bean.

The AABE is a national organization with chapters in 28 states and headquarters in Washington DC. The AABE was founded in 1977

by Clarke A. Watson, the owner of Watson Associates, an energyconsulting firm in Denver. Watson launched the AABE in response to the 1970s energy crisis and the federal government’s strategy in dealing with the crisis. During the 1970s, the nation was falling into economic decline and dealing with high oil and gas prices

after coming off an economic boom during the 1950s and 1960s. The economic boom primarily stemmed form domestic and foreign made cheap energy supplies.

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter established a task force to study the energy crisis. The task force team was only made up of White men. Most of these men were also conservationists and scholars who did not have experience in the major energy sectors. The make-up of the task force team was a major concern for Blacks who worked in energy because they feared the team’s strategies would reflect the elitist attitude of predominately White groups such as conservationist and environmental groups.

Clark Watson believed that there is a strong correlation between energy resource development, economic growth, and the participation of minorities in the national economic system. In response to Carter’s task force, Watson held a meeting at the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC on July 25-26, 1977 and invited Blacks interested in energy to attend. The participants at the meeting ranged from presidents of oil and gas companies to editors of newspapers. At the meeting, Watson expressed the goals he wanted attendees to accomplish. Watson wanted Black people who had some knowledge about the current energy situation in the U.S. to use their ideas to try to influence future decision making when it comes to energy policies.

Watson also wanted the Democratic Party to start appointing more Black people to high-level government positions. In order for more Black people to get appointed to these higher positions, more Black people had to show interest in energy. Energy issues were not a high priority on the Black political agenda or among Black civil rights and social groups. Watson wanted to encourage more Black leaders to pay attention to energy because energy played a major role in job and economic growth.

Transforming HISD’s Barbara Jordan High School for Careers Into a North Side Career & Tech Education Hub

in a two-year or four-year program for additional training.

The Barbara Jordan career center will work in harmony with a student’s home school, giving priority admission to students zoned to surrounding high schools and providing free transportation from their home campus to the program.

This change is in line with the district’s promise of increasing options for HISD students who are interested in 21st century career and technical education programs that prepare them to succeed in our modern workforce. It also supports the school district’s goal of increasing academic rigor and graduation rates for its students, a fourth of those being African-American.

Current Barbara Jordan freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors will be allowed to remain on campus until graduation. However, the school will not accept any additional students into its comprehensive four-year high school program beginning next school year.

Students interested in attending Barbara Jordan career center will attend their home campus for their freshman year (2015-16) before beginning coursework at the career center during their sophomore year (201617). Following is an overview of how the Barbara Jordan career center works in conjunction with a student’s home campus: • Freshman year: All classes on home campus, career exploratory coursework on home campus • Sophomore year: Core classes at home campus, specialized coursework at Barbara Jordan career center • Junior year: Core classes at home campus, specialized coursework and college dual-credit courses at Barbara Jordan career center • Senior year: Core classes at home campus, specialized coursework, college dualcredit courses, and internship at Barbara Jordan career center Parents can learn more by visiting www.houstonisd.org.

HISD’s Barbara Jordan High School for Careers is getting back to its original mission, offering students at neighboring high schools the opportunity to study specialized programming in high-demand fields. Thanks to the $1.89 billion bond referendum approved by voters in 2012, The Houston Independent School District is now able to restore Barbara Jordan as a regional hub for several technical and career based programs. Barbara Jordan will begin transitioning into a regional hub during the 2015-2016 school year and will fully implement the new program for the 2016-2017 school year.

According to Principal Ross McAlpine, the campus’ location and history make it a perfect fit for the unique program and he is happy to see the school return to its original mission.

“So many of our graduates have built upon their experience as a high school student at Barbara Jordan and used it to create great careers in engineering, manufacturing, automotive repair, health and others,” McAlpine said. “As we build our new facility and add additional focus on high-demand career programs, we have the ability to attract students who are interested in building on to our legacy, one that impacts not just the African-American community that we have historically served, but Houston’s entire diverse population.”

Beginning in 2016-2017, students who are zoned to Davis, Furr, Kashmere, North Forest, Reagan, Sam Houston, Washington, and Wheatley High Schools will have the opportunity to take core courses at their home campus while spending a portion of their day at Barbara Jordan for specialized programming in industrial construction and the health professions.

Barbara Jordan is the first of multiple similarly designed career centers the district plans to open in other parts of the city over the next few years.

Students who choose to enroll in the magnet program at Barbara Jordan will not only earn a high school diploma, but will also be prepared to pursue a career in their field of study or enroll

With singing, prayer and uplifting words, Texas College ceremoniously broke ground Thursday on a new dorm and various other capital improvements.

Texas College board members, faculty/staff, alumni and students, along with visitors, friends of the college and community members, came together for the event, which took place on campus.

Texas College President Dr. Dwight J. Fennell called it “a very special moment in the life of the college.”

He said the planned capital improvement project has been years in the making, and now the college is ready for construction to take place.

“In 1894, a group of individuals perhaps stood in the same spots … to begin an educational process for them, a disenfranchised people. They began with a vision … to not only build a facility but implant in the livelihoods of a people the opportunity for educational and spiritual development…,” he said.

“Now today, as we come together as a community of friends at a different time, but essentially for the same reason, ... I remain inspired by the history with what has been done, but I remain more motivated and excited about the future with the potential that exists for this institution.”

So, he said, as the college celebrates Phase 1 of a proposed four-phase initiative, it looks forward to completion of multiple projects.

He said Phase 1 includes a new dorm; redesigning a building and making it into a music hall; an expanded student center; the addition of a wellness center and the addition of a weight room complex and athletic complex; the renovation of Fair and Daniel halls; newly designed and expanded dining facilities; and the creation of a redesigned campus entrance.

“The new and renovated accommodations of Phase 1 mean new life for Texas College and … increased learning opportunities for our students and a community of friends,” Fennell said.

“The school had lost its accreditation and funding, and we really didn’t know what to do, but we did know that we serve a God who can do all things,” Christian said.

From 1998 until now, the college has transitioned and transformed, he said.

“Texas College has come a mighty long way,” he said.
