This is the one time of year beneficiaries can make changes to their Medicare health and prescription plans. Trey Berndt, associate state director for advocacy with AARP Texas, says there are plenty of options, so people should take the time to find the right fit, considering cost, coverage, convenience and customer service. Another important note when exploring options, explains Berndt, is for prescription drug coverage under Medicare Part D, if a person doesn’t enroll when first eligible, they may end up paying more in later years. Berndt says those with questions or who want to change their plans can contact Medicare directly. They can also contact a local Area Agency on Aging, where there are Medicare benefits counselors who can help navigate the process at no cost. The open enrollment window runs through Dec. 7.

TWC’s third annual Hiring Red, White & You! Statewide Hiring Fair is a joint initiative supported by the Office of the Governor, the Texas Medical Center and the Texas Veterans Commission to connect veterans in Texas with employers who are hiring. The Hiring Red, White & You! Statewide Hiring Fair is designed to assist veterans, service members and their spouses find their next career opportunity. Employers may participate at no cost and are encouraged to contact their local Workforce Solutions office for more information. Last year’s Hiring Red, White & You! hiring events attracted more than 11,000 job seekers and 1,562 employers statewide, and resulted in approximately 67 onsite hires and many more connections made that resulted in interviews and postevent job offers. The Texas Veterans Commission is preparing veterans for these hiring fairs by assisting them with applications and résumés, interviewing techniques, as well as one-on-one counseling services. The national unemployment rate for all veterans is 6.6 percent1. In contrast, for those veterans who served in the military since September 2001, the unemployment rate is higher at 9.0 percent. The Hiring Red, White & You! Statewide Hiring Fair will help provide opportunities for employment to the estimated 1.6 million veterans in Texas.

BEAUMONT - Bryan Bennett ran for three touchdowns and threw one more to lead Southeastern Louisiana to a 61-34 victory over Lamar on Saturday night. Bennett had touchdown runs of 1 and 3 yards to give the Lions a 17-13 halftime lead.

Xavier Roberson ran for a 75-yard touchdown and Bennett ran for a 64-yard score to stretch Southeastern Louisiana’s lead to 31-13 early in the third quarter. Bennett added a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jarrell Bennett in the fourth. Bennett ran for 125 yards on 17 carries, and his 1,478 career yards now ranks 10th all-time at Southeastern Louisiana.

BRENHAM - The largest employer in Washington County could be forced to close its doors by the state.

The Brenham State Supported Living Center opened its doors in 1974, and employs over 1,000 people.

The Texas Sunset Commission, a sort of watchdog group designed to review state agencies and make recommendations to the Legislature on which ones are still needed, has already recommended the shut down of a living center in Austin. Now the commission has its eye on five other centers around Texas. No specific centers have been named, but the Brenham center could end up on the list. The center is home to nearly 300 special-needs residents like Errell Jordan. Jordan, 51, was diagnosed with a rare form of Autism and has lived at the center for most of his life.

CONROE - A hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday on whether to remove the judge presiding over the felony child abuse case against Adrian Peterson. Assistant Montgomery County District Attorney Phil Grant tells the Houston Chronicle that prosecutors plant to argue for replacing state District Judge Kelly Case as presiding judge in the Peterson case. That’s after Case was said to have referred to attorneys in the case as “media whores.”

However, Grant said Peterson’s lead attorney, Rusty Hardin, is scheduled to be out of town Wednesday and the hearing may be rescheduled. Case apologized at Peterson’s first court appearance Wednesday, saying the comment was meant as a joke.

DALLAS - Women across Texas are being reminded of the importance of early detection and treatment for breast cancer on National Mammography Day. Death rates from breast cancer have been falling steadily for two decades, but it’s still the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Joy Donovan Brandon, director of media relations with the American Cancer Society in Texas, says regular screenings are a must. Brandon says it’s estimated there will be more than 16,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in Texas this year alone. Brandon also notes breast cancer can and does strike men. There are a number of programs and facilities across Texas that offer free or low-cost mammograms year round for those eligible.

FT WORTH - Three schools in the Belton Independent School District, located south of Waco, are shut down on Thursday because two students were on a flight with Ebola patient Amber Vinson. According to superintendent Susan Kincannon, closing the schools will let the district and officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention properly evaluate the situation. Vinson traveled on a Frontier Airlines plane from Cleveland on Monday, one day before she was diagnosed with the Ebola virus. According to CDC officials, she had a low-grade fever at the time. Vinson was one of the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital nurses who helped care for Ebola patient Thomas Duncan before he died. The CDC began reaching out to Vinson’s fellow passengers on Wednesday.

This includes at least 132 people, and potentially more as the plane was used on additional flights before being removed from service on Wednesday morning.

HOUSTON - As concern around oil and gas methane emissions continues to grow, those companies in Texas and across the country that provide solutions to reduce this industry’s pollution can also help spur economic growth. A new analysis released by the Environmental Defense Fund identifies 76 companies with more than 500 locations nationwide that manufacture methane controls or offer related services, according to Marcy Lowe, president of Datu Research, the company that conducted the analysis.

Lowe says among the 10 states with the highest concentration of such companies, and the most to gain economically from future growth, is Texas. Among those highlighted specifically in the report is Heath Consultants Incorporated of Houston, with annual revenues exceeding $100 million and more than 1,200 employees. The jobs, like others in the methane mitigation industry, are high quality, says Laura Spanjian, director of the Office of Sustainability for the City of Houston. The report also found increased use of these methane mitigation solutions can save the oil and gas industry more than a billion dollars in lost product, while greatly reducing harmful emissions. Lowe says that’s key as the federal government is now contemplating standards to limit them. It’s estimated oil and gas operations emit 7.7 million metric tons of methane per year; and absent industry-wide adoption of new control measures, that will increase at least Business Card for Paper_Layout 1 6/9/14 five percent through 2018.

What if Jody Westby Had Not Said No to Racial Profiling?

Washington D.C. attorney Jody Westby almost certainly did not return to her home recently thinking that she would be a heroine or perform a heroic act. But in one instant she became just that. She did a powerful humane act that showed in a graphic way how racial profiling can be stopped dead in its tracks. Westby intervened when two police officers stopped Dennis Stucky, a disabled Black handyman, in her neighborhood after receiving a report of a burglary suspect on the prowl there. She stopped, and identified herself as an attorney who lived in the neighborhood, vouched for his identity, and demanded the officers leave. Her parting words to them have been shouted countless times, in countless places, and in countless different ways in recent weeks, “Just because he’s Black, doesn’t mean he’s here to rob a house.” The officers promptly left the scene.

What would have happened if Westby hadn’t been there” Or if she had simply kept walking? Or, worse overtly or tacitly voiced support for the harassing stop of Stucky?

These are hardly moot points. The questions have been answered badly when middle-class, well-to-do neighbors, residents, and passersby’s see blatant cases of harassment racial harassment on the streets and do nothing. But Westby did get involved, and her involvement, sent another horrific message. That’s that there’s a brutally different standard of how far too many police officers and officials deal with AfricanAmericans in predominantly toney White middle-class neighborhoods.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has oft told the tale of being pulled over twice as a college

student driving on the New Jersey Turnpike and again as a federal prosecutor in Washington D.C. He was not in a Black neighborhood when the stops happened and there was no Westby to come to his aid.

In Ferguson, Missouri, a study based on police statistics found that in 2013 while African-American drivers made up a little less than two-thirds of the driving-age population in the city, they made up nearly 90 percent of all traffic stops. They were almost twice as likely to be searched as Whites and twice as likely to be arrested even though police found no weapons or drugs on them. An ACLU study found that Blacks were likely to be stopped, searched and arrested in nearly every category of crime than Whites. Westby’s intervention, though, pointed up yet another brutal fact. When White middle-class well-heeled, professionals do get involved when they see or perceive a racial wrong, they get the benefit of a reverse stereotype. That is that they are regarded as more credible, trustworthy, and believable than African-Americans or Hispanics, when they speak. Put even more bluntly, they are coated with an authority aura that few Blacks or Hispanics, especially poor, Blacks and Hispanics could ever have. This is glaringly apparent in cases involving Black defendants.

Two Penn State University studies on racial perceptions and stereotypes, one in 2003 and a follow-up study in 2008, found that many Whites are likely to associate pictures of Blacks with violent crimes, and in some cases where crimes were not committed

by Blacks they misidentified the perpetrator as an African-American.

But the studies also found that White jurors are more likely to believe the testimony of police and prosecution witnesses, no matter how tainted or compromised their testimony, than that of defense witnesses, particularly Black witnesses.

What are we doing with our education?

W

ith so many schools being closed down in our communities across the country, it has to be clear to us that this nation does not have a vested interest in truly educating our people.

Education is always subordinated to sports and entertainment.

Dedicated teachers can barely pay their bills although they are entrusted with shaping the minds of our children. At the same time, athletes making millions of dollars for running a football, dunking a basketball or running plates on the baseball diamond.

We MUST Understand: If this country hasn’t treated us right, what would make us think that they would care teach and educate us right?

This country’s educational system is not designed to place self-love within African-American boys and girls. This system is not designed for us to see ourselves in the books, because they have steadily watered-down our contributions to this nation.

What is it designed for? To create modern day slaves who only get diplomas and degrees in hopes of getting a job instead of being in the mind-set of a building and owning something. Does this mean I am against pursuing higher education? Of course not.

However, we must examine what we’re doing with this education that we’re attaining and if it’s really of any value to us if

we don’t know how to use it to do something for our self and our people.

To most, I would be considered an uneducated man because I didn’t finish school. However, with or without a degree, many from my generation have been able to achieve more than some who have tons of degrees. It’s not that I and we are better, however, we had a clear understanding of who our enemy was as we went through the throes of a segregated America.

Life became our classroom, experience was our books and wisdom was our teacher.

We had to work three times as hard to get less than half of what other folks earned. We took heed to the writing on the wall that we must do something for ourselves and not sit around depending on others. We had a drive to overcome. We had a passion to push through.

We didn’t care if we were void of their pieces of paper or tassels; we were determined to build and own something. We had a thirst for real freedom. And whatever little education we obtained from their schools of thought; we knew that true education wasn’t just confined to those four walls.

What lulled us to sleep? The moment we could go to the same toilet with, eat at the same lunch counter beside and be buried in the same cemetery alongside our oppressor, we took our eyes off of the prize. We forgot we were

behind enemy lines. We forgot to pass on our stories to our children and teach them life lessons. We lost focus.

Now our young people are going to school, but not being schooled on the true purpose of education and how to use it to do something for self. Education is not limited to a school building.

There was a time when we would educate our own children as a collective community.

Historically, many of the greatest educators used small homes to produce many of the greatest engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, doctors and more. The education wasn’t just from textbooks but was put in context according to the time and what must be done with what was being taught.

Now it seems like with bigger buildings, bigger budgets, and more degrees, less is being accomplished. We have to break this cycle.

We’re being forced to get back to community-based education.

We’re being forced to get back in the mind-set of getting an education that’s value is based upon what we can build and own.

We MUST Understand: If they close down every school in the Black community tomorrow, does that mean education comes to a halt?

AMERICA from pg. 1 HOUSTON - Ask any Black male in America, young or old, and they would more than likely tell you that they are in no way surprised by this incident. In fact, Black women and girls are not excluded.

In this country, a Black person can’t seem to even be able to play loud music, drive a vehicle, knock on a door for help, wear a hoodie, walk across the street, shop in a major store, buy a sub sandwich, seek out an officer for help, reach for a license when pulled over, or cross a major highway, without being harassed, dehumanized, tasered, beaten, strangled, stripped of their rights or outright killed by officers in this country.

This is not merely police brutality, these are acts of domestic terrorism on U.S. soil.

Many would say this has been the modus operandi of dirty cops, dating back to the days of slavery when the officers of that day were assigned to hunt down runaway slaves. Much hasn’t changed and it seems to be getting worse by the day. It’s not only in Ferguson, Missouri, but also in the backyard of every city.

Just ask former Houston City Councilman Jarvis Johnson, who was allegedly held at gunpoint, handcuffed, slapped, detained and robbed by a White Precinct 1 Deputy Constable John Brown and at least one other Houston Police Department officer during a Sept.

13 traffic stop.

During a press conference outside the constable’s downtown office, Johnson, local activists and supporters called for a thorough and just investigation. He also challenged the narrative from the deputy constable who claims his dash cam was inoperable that night and does not have the encounter recorded.

Johnson, who owns Aunt Bea’s Restaurant located off I-45 North Freeway at Tidwell, told reporters he was leaving his business a little after 10:00pm that night when he noticed the constable turning on his flashing lights signaling for him to pull over.

He said he was in the far left lane on North Shepherd and had TX- 4

two options: 1) Pull over to the right where there were mostly unlit abandoned buildings or 2) Make a U-turn into the nearby Gulf Station, that’s well lit. He chose the latter because he felt it’s never safe to be pulled over in dark areas.

Strangely, the convenience store surveillance video, which has been posted on YouTube, shows Deputy Brown aggressively approaching Johnson’s black SUV with his gun already drawn. Johnson also claims he was addressed with multiple expletives.

“I hadn’t done anything to pose a threat to him, so why did he have his gun drawn?,” Johnson told African-American News&Issues in a recent phone interview. “What justified him pulling his gun on me?

Can Deputy Brown justify pulling his gun on me? Does an alleged speeding violation justify such actions? Was I a threat because I was a Black man? Was this officer on the prowl that night?”

To make matters worse: Johnson said another officer who had arrived on the scene, slapped him before he was handcuffed and detained. Multiple HPD cars bombarding the scene can also be seen in the video.

“The video, that I was so very fortunate to get from the store, only gave half the story. You don’t see me being slapped in the video.

Although you do see the head of one of the officers in the video, you see him making a very jerking move out of the camera shot,” he noted.

“The officer said I evaded arrest, but no dash cam working?

The officers out there kept telling me that the dash cam was broken. I don’t believe that to be true because if you’re out doing traffic stops, why would you do it without all of your equipment working? If you’re an officer on the streets, your equipment should be working and I believe that equipment was working. They don’t want to show the video from the dash cam because it will confirm everything that I have said,” Johnson noted.

After being released from Deputy Brown’s patrol car and ticketed, Johnson says he discovered that at least $2,500 of $4,700 he had in his vehicle was now missing.

The cash was from the day’s sales at Aunt Bea’s Restaurant. “I asked Deputy Brown where is my money and he said, “Dude, nobody took your money.” I’m tired of officers using their subjective laws to justify what they do. What probable cause did the officer have to search my car?”

“I don’t want people to focus on the money. That’s not the major issue with me. The major issue is-based upon the pattern around the country among cops right now--I could’ve lost my life. The major issue is this officer pulled his gun on me and has yet to justify why. It’s bigger than money. It’s about pointing out the unjust behavior of officers,” he told African-American News&Issues.

The incident wasn’t over that night.

Johnson said Deputy Brown then engaged in what he believes were tactics intending on intimidating him and the store owner. “If you look at the video in its entirety, after I went to get gas and got my receipt, Deputy Brown went into the store and said something to the owner. I went back into the store and Deputy Brown followed me back into the store. Then when I went back in the store a third time, you can see in the video Deputy Brown and his colleague looking very intently through the window at me. Was Deputy Brown trying to intimidate me? Was he trying to instigate a situation?”

Johnson said he never identified himself as being a former councilmember because, “One thing I never do is ask for a different treatment than any other citizen of the city of Houston. Being a former city councilman should not give me the right to be exonerated from the same treatment as any other citizen. But no citizen in this city should be treated in the manner that I was treated for allegedly speeding.

Once he (Deputy Brown) got to my car, the gun was already drawn and pointed at me; never saying why that gun was pointed at me. No citizen should have to go through what I went through.”

“I was told that he (Deputy Brown) called for backup before he got out of the car,” Johnson told African-American News&Issues.

“So does that mean he feared it was going to be an issue he would initiate or that he knew he was going to do something that justified back up? What kind of justification was he looking for that night to shoot me down? Is this the type of action the Precinct 1 Constable’s office condones? Do they condone robbing somebody?”

Johnson says he has yet to file a complaint with HPD Internal Affairs; however, he has filed one with the precinct. He says he has yet to hear directly from Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen or his office.

“It’s still under investigation.

We do have his (Jarvis Johnson’s) complaint. And we’re still awaiting some pressing things from him in order for us to complete our investigation. I am not at liberty to tell you what those things are, but he knows what we are waiting for. I also believe HPD is awaiting for him to contact them as well,” J.C. Mosier, a spokesman for the constable’s office, told AfricanAmerican News&Issues.

Mosier said once they receive the requested information from Johnson he believes concluding the investigation won’t take long. He also stated that he believes Deputy Brown is still on duty.

“If they are serious about cleaning up these police departments, they have to bring swift justice to victims. They have to send a clear, firm message to cops who do such things, that it’s not tolerated. Otherwise, their silence clearly shows us they condone such actions and will continue to allow officers to do as they please to those they claim to protect and serve,” Johnson opined.

NOT LOSING SIGHT OF THE BIGGER PICTURE Right now the world is focusing its attention on Ferguson and St. Louis, as youth-led acts of civil disobedience are sweeping the area due to the killing of Michael Brown by Ferguson officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9. Thousands went to the area to participate in a weekend of resistance under the theme of ‘Ferguson October’ on October 10-13.

movements for justice have been sparked by the killings of Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Renisha McBride, Aiyana Jones, Rekia Boyd, Vonderrit Myers, Jr., John Crawford, Alesia Thomas, and the list goes on and on.

Deric Muhammad, noted activist, emphasized in an interview with Fox 26 news the need for all officers in Harris County to wear body cameras because it would “take the guesswork out of what happened. It takes the guesswork out of who stole the money, who slapped him in the face.”

While standing alongside Johnson at the press conference, Muhammad said, “This is about Jarvis Johnson, but it’s really bigger than Jarvis Johnson,” The Honorable Elijah Muhammad said. “No single individual can rise above the condition of his or her people.” If something like this can happen to a former councilman, a high profile Black man in the city of Houston, then it can happen to any of us.”

“We’re here to support him. But we’re really here to highlight what goes on every single day in the city of Houston where these rogue cops are earning their stripes after dark.

We’re praying for those victims who are victimized by this kind of thing every single day,” said Muhammad.

“The song that comes to mind that says, “Don’t push me because I’m close to the edge. I’m trying not to lose my head.”

HOUSTON – Throughout the years, the City of Houston has been privileged to have a humble, witty, downhome Louisiana spirit and personality with much wisdom and knowledge in its region. Since his arrival into the great State of Texas he has made a plethora of steps that has made him renown in his own right. Not to mention that he was also a professional boxer in his younger years. However, this knowledgable and accomplished heavyweight, one day traded in his boxing gloves for a more potent fighting mechanism, “The Word of God”. This man is none other than the founder and pastor of True Faith Missionary Baptist Church, Dr. Johnny J. Boudreaux.

However, the title “Dr.” is not one that was easily acquired for the native Louisianian. His educational career is quite extensive, as is the pastoral leadership roles of which he operates in. For he has earned several degrees which has afforded him this entitlement inclusive with: an Associate’s degree from the College of Biblical Studies in Theology, a Graduate Diploma degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (with biblical language added) and the Doctor of Ministry degree from Houston Graduate School of Theology; his focus there was, “Planning and Developing a Core Group for Continued Church Growth.”

He has also served as finance TX-8

manager and public relations officer for a Houston business for more than 13 years.

Even more so to add to that list of academic and biblical achievements, Dr Boudreaux has been an adjunct professor with the College of Biblical Studies for six and half years. He has also served at the University of Phoenix for over eight years. There he has held the positions of being in the Lead Faculty position with the Colleges of Arts and Sciences in the areas of Humanities, Philosophy, Religion, History, and Political Science. Additionally, he has facilitated courses at the University of Phoenix in the following fields: Humanities, Philosophy, Religion and General Studies.

While it may seem to some, that Dr. Boudreaux may have his hands filled with the various roles he portrays and has fulfilled at different institutions, he remains faithful and loyal to the original groundwork that the Lord established him to do. Accordingly, he has been the Shepherd at True Faith MBC for twenty-eight years and he, “manages its administrative and religious activities every day.”

Dr. Boudreaux is accommodated with quite an extensive resume as he has taken an active role in giving back to the Houston community through his dedicated service with Houston Ministers against Crime, and Safe School for children. He has also been called to speak at high schools and other social events throughout the city and state. He is the author of three must-read books entitled: Leadership Through the Dark: Godly Leadership Is Not Hindered Because of the Dark or Its Predators, Developing a Process for Christian Leaders: Taking A Close Look At How And Where Developing All Begins, and Can You See? He is in the process of penning a fourth book that he revealed, “is absolutely prophetic and the title will definitely catch your attention”.

The great philosopher has been

married to his beautiful and supportive wife, Deborah D. Boudreaux for 32 years. He is the father of three children: Tyrone, Nicole and Janessa. One of his most prolific words of wisdom he shares is that, “Every day, we are confronted with a pop quiz. We may not always do well on the pop quiz, but it prepares us to do well on the final exam.”

The Origination and Church History of True Faith MBC reveals the following: On a Monday night in May of 1987, a group of believers gathered at New Loyalty Missionary Baptist Church, 7100 Hirsch Road, to organize a church. The mediators of this meeting were Pastor B. M. Reynolds and Rev. E. S. Branch, Moderator of Independent Association. Pastor Johnny J. Boudreaux, his family, and the group comprised the new congregation, which was promptly named True Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Boudreaux was called as leader and Sis. Lee Anna Hollis was assigned as secretary. The New Loyalty Baptist Church had six of its members join in the organization for record purposes The church grew and later moved to the area of Interstate 45 and Crosstimbers for about a year and a half. Their next move was to 9600 Eastex Freeway where they remained for two years. In 1991, a new worship facility was built at 5806 Hirsch Road and still serves as the meeting place for the church today.

The church has experienced great things in the Lord and is presently growing.

It is with thanksgiving and praise that True Faith celebrates every day that the Lord has given. They are thankful what he has done in their church family and all of the other church doors opened in His name.

They are a church that are continuing to seek, save and lead lost souls to Christ.

HOUSTON - “Inner beauty is the one of the most important qualities a woman can possess.” According to, Professional Make-up Artist Joy Lewis, owner of Makeup by Joy. Texas Southern to Honor Outstanding Alumni & Former Students, Community Leaders and Corporate Partners at President’s Gala

Texas Southern University will recognize its outstanding alumni and former students, community leaders and corporate and philanthropic partners at its President’s Gala, held annually as part of the universities Homecoming celebration.

R&B songstress Chante Moore, along with the acclaimed brother duo of international recording artist Chris Walker and the Ernest Walker Band of Houston will serve as this year’s entertainment.

Alumni Honorees include: the Reverend Manson Johnson, a History and Government graduate, who has led Holman Street Baptist Church since 1977; Jesse Sifuentes, an Art graduate and noted Houston-based ceramic artist and muralist; Bertrand Simmons, an Economics graduate and owner of Bert Simmons State

Farm Insurance Agency; Georgia Provost, a school of Technology graduate and owner of Provost and Associates Photography Studios; Marla Fielder, a College of Pharmacy graduate and the first African- American pharmacist to lead Kroger’s Pharmacy Southwest; and Attorney Lawrence Boze’, a JHJ Graduate School of Business and Thurgood Marshall School of Law graduate and owner of U. Lawrence Boze’ & Associates, P.C. Community Partner awards to be pre-

sented are: The Foundation award will be presented to Joel Cowley of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Community Leader award will be presented to Houston Mayor Annise Parker, TSU’s Media Trendsetter award will go to Doug Abernethy of Radio One, and the Corporate award recipient is Ivory Harrison of The CocaCola Company This year’s hosts for the gala are Dr. John and Docia Rudley.
