wasn’t sure if this “eastern” health practice was consistent with my “missionary baptist” upbringing.

It turned out to be the beginning of a physical and spiritual purifying process.

After relocating back to Texas several months ago, I lost my mother to cancer, and afterwards decided to take another trip to Europe, visiting four different countries (a journalized travel I hope to be sharing with the readers in the coming days) and gaining yet another opportunity to clear my head of the lingering memories of some painful life chapters.

The day after my return, I received a call from Roy Douglas Malonson. Anyone who really knows him can probably fill in the blanks of a rather frank conversation that I will chose to keep private. But the short version of it was him asking if I were ready to talk...and ready to put my past behind me.

I thought of the Frederick Douglas’ oft heard saying, “True political power lies in the power of the press,” and of legendary Houston penman, Bud Johnson, with whom’s tone, tenor, or substance, some may have found hard to swallow, but he ‘was’ an “old African warrior” with more guts, courage, and conviction, than anyone I’ve ever read. I thought of the opportunity I might have to put my experience and my “experience” to good use.

I have always believed in second chances and although they may not come often, when it does, there is purpose within it.

Meet DeWayne Charleston

Dewayne Charleston was born in the hospital on the campus of Prairie View A&M College to in 1963 and attended public schools in Waller County. He is a graduate of The University of North Texas and did further graduate studies at Dallas Seminary and Prairie View A&M University. He served on the staff of Texas Governor Ann Richards and coordinated one of the first faithbased programs funded by the office of Texas Governor George Bush.

Returning home to Prairie View in 2000, he was elected as the first African-American Justice of the Peace in Waller County and served for seven and a half years.

Charleston has been the publisher of several publications, including Houston Sport Magazine, The Waller County News Tribune, and the Dallas Ft. Worth Gospel Monthly Magazine.

Charleston has done missions work in the African countries of Zambia and South Africa, as part of a agriculture and livestock improvement program and has extensive farming experience in raising South African bred Boer goats. He has also traveled to several European countries including Turkey, The Netherlands, France, and Germany.

Always interested in politics, Dewayne has testified before the Texas Legislature on voting rights and voting I.D. bills, and his efforts at protecting voting and civil rights for minorities have been covered in the New York Times and L.A. Times among other publications. He has lectured at a number of universities, including Prairie View A&M University, Howard University, William and Mary University and Georgetown University to name a few.

WHY THE BLACK COMMUNITY IS INCAPABLE OF SECURING JUSTICE FOR ERIC GARNER OR ANYOTHER VICTIM OF POLICE BRUTALITY

I

n light of the recent decision by the Staten Island Grand Jury to not indict the officer captured by a cellphone choking Eric Garner until his life expired.

Considering this recent rash of African-American men dying at the hands of ‘law enforcement officers’, brutality by officers is not only predictable, but also to be expected. No one should be shocked that Mr. Eric Garner lost his life and the Grand Jury quite simply turned a blind eye toward the homicide. The death of African-Americans at the hands of White ‘law enforcement officers’ seems to be as traditional as mom’s Apple Pie. Within placed within the pantheon of African-Americans, male and female, who have met their demise at the hands of this familiar adversary, Eric Garner is nothing special; he joins a lengthy list of victims such as Fred Hampton, Mark Clark, Carl Hampton, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Jonathan Jackson, George Jackson, the list stretches across several centuries.

The murder of AfricanAmericans by “law enforcement officers” invariably brings forth the exact same “playbook” by those who proclaim to represent the community, be it preachers, community activists, Black Nationalist leaders, and/or elected officials. This playbook consists of several predictable actions/ activities: A. We will decry the murder of

an innocent Black person.

B. We will call for an ‘independent investigation’ of the matter.

C. The militants will publicly spew hollow threats at law enforcement agencies that amount to little more than ‘mental masturbation’.

D. We will hold rallies and press conferences to address the pernicious issue of police brutality.

E. We will hold a march to call attention to the issue.

F. We will then bury our dead and return home heartbroken with a righteous indignation that promises ‘never again’; that is until the next time it occurs, and we all know that there will be a next time.

The alluded to reactionary playbook has repeatedly failed us.

And as the great saying goes, ‘if you do what you always did, you gon’ get what you always got.” Such is a lesson that “race leaders” have failed to recognize.

Although Mr. Eric Garner is central to this incident, there is a larger lesson to be learned here. It is this realization that drives my belief that it is impossible for African-Americans to honor Mr. Eric Garner by securing anything resembling to justice. Put simply, our reactionary nature, lack of cohesiveness and political disorganization prevent such an occurrence.

When will African-Americans learn that threats, public statements, and wearing out of shoe leather is NOT a winnable strategy for dealing with institutional racism found amongst law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, or even within financial institutions.

Antiquated protest activities barely place demands, let alone a significant threat, upon politically organized entities.

It is only through an already mobilized political force that a significant blow to institutions and those individuals who make up those institutions may be delivered. Put simply, the lack of political currency and cohesion leaves the AfricanAmerican community completely vulnerable to the repeated attacks of law enforcement agencies.

Recently, S.H.A.P.E. Community Center celebrated 45 years of service to the Houston area and onward.

The theme for the 45th Anniversary celebration was, “Celebrating our Past, Embracing our Present, Shaping Our Future”. A visit to S.H.A.P.E. mirrored the image that the celebration was an awesome occasion!

Milton Randle, a committed partner of S.H.A.P.E. said, “There were so many auxiliaries working together for the Anniversary and it was such a grande affair.” He grinned and shared, “As a matter of fact, I received the Plaque for Elders.” He continued, “A lot of information was given by the different speakers that people really needed to hear and they spoke in a way that everyone in attendance could understand what they were saying.”

Another one of the elders that was present, Ms. Mattie Perry, who has been a partner of S.H.A.P.E. for ten years said the following about the commemorative event. “The Anniversary was amazing and I enjoyed celebrating such a wonderful occasion and I pray for many more to come.” Mawiyah Buseje, who worked the event expressed that, “We

worked hard, the anniversary was a great success and I am proud to have worked on this project.”

African-American News & Issues was given a chance to conduct an exclusive interview with Executive Director, Deloyd Parker who has been a part of S.H.A.P.E. since its origination. He is actually a cofounder of the institution. Over four decades ago he went to Austin and initiated the process for S.H.A.P.E. to become incorporated by securing the organization’s 501c3.

During that interview Mr. Parker stated that, “People constantly want to address the individual, but at S.H.A.P.E. we don’t focus on the individual, we focus on what we call the collective.” He explained that the collective implies, “I am because we are, we are therefore I am, there’s no me without you and there’s no you without me – We are all apart of a family of interdependence.” This thought yields the truth that it is not just about one person, but that it takes a combined effort to achieve a unified goal.

Throughout the years, Parker has proven through his tireless efforts and relentless commitment to the community that he is true to this thought

and theory. With a warming personality, modest character and despite all of the hard work and loyalty that he has dedicated to S.H.A.P.E.; he is not willing to make a boast of himself. Instead he praises those that support, volunteer and contribute of themselves to the Center.

He said, “Oftentimes, the enemy wants you to get the big-head so that you will think that it’s all you, but in actuality it’s a collective.” He shared, “It is the staff, hundreds of volunteers, children, elders and the board - these are the ones that make it possible.” In fact he went on to say, “The collective is what allowed us to celebrate the 45th Anniversary. Because we celebrated the past, but embraced the present because we have to shape our future.”

As the interview continued, Mr. Parker explained how S.H.A.P.E. was birthed out of the Civil Rights, Black Liberation and Black Power Movements and experiences such as these.

He recollected that over 45 years ago, “We recognized that we could protest and we could demonstrate and we could do all those things that we did in the past – but if we didn’t create

an institution that was comprised of families strengthening and empowering then we were just wasting our time.”

He informed that it is imperative that families are strong. Furthermore he stated that it helps to have a support system, especially when it consists of your family. It’s about our families and how strong they are.

He revealed, “Even in protesting my mother and father have always supported me, my brothers and sisters have too - because I have a strong family and they understood that I needed their support. If you don’t have family support you will waiver and it will be difficult or rather more difficult.”

Mr. Parker expressed that, “S.H.A.P.E was born out of struggle and that struggle defined for us a need of having strong families; so that’s why we started S.H.A.P.E. It is important that we seek and tend to the various needs of our families especially as it relates: socially, culturally, economically, spiritually, politically and nutritionally.”

HOUSTON - Recently, the Community of Faith under the leadership of Bishop James W.E. Dixon, II held their Living Legends 6th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. The theme of the morning was “A Greater Faith for a Greater Future”. The luncheon was hosted at The King’s Court located at 1024 Pinemont Drive. 77091.

Elders, pastors, residents and various other religious and political representatives of the community all came together to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth as well as dine with one another. Sis. Eddie Goodlow begin the luncheon off by greeting everyone. The program continued as the scripture reading, prayer and welcome were delivered by Sis. Betty Texada, Deacon Maple Barley and Sis. Bertha Dinkins, respectively.

Pastor F.N. Williams of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church was also in attendance and gave remarks. He started by saying, “Thank God for Ferguson”.

He expressed that he was here during the Civil Rights era and took part in the movement. He said, “Things have changed.” Pastor Williams went on to reveal that, “They will not allow us to raise and whip our children, but then they will kill them; we are living in perilous times.”

took the luncheon to Sunday morning worship service on a Tuesday morning as he rehearsed the words of King David.

Psalm 103:2, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Bishop Dixon explained how King David had a conversation with himself in this particular psalm of praise. Keeping current with occasion of the day, he went on to inform that the, “older we get we have a tendency not to remember as much as we did in our youth.” Therefore, “we should employ our mental capacity in the business of remembering” he said. As he concluded his message he challenged those in attendance to, “Count your blessings and not your burdens” ultimately reminding everyone during this holiday season to remain thankful for all of the wonderful and glorious things that we have been blessed with from our Heavenly Father.

AUSTIN - Several hundred students at the University of Texas joined almost 200 protest nationwide in the aftermath of the Ferguson grand juries decision to no-bill police officer Daren Wilson. Wilson has since resigned from the Ferguson police department. At about the time of his resignation, many more "die-in" protest were being conducted in Pittsburgh, New York, Chicago, Washington D.C, and Boston following the acquittal of a New York police officer's acquittal in the chokehold death of Eric Garner.

BEAUMONT - According to the Beaumont Enterprise a North Texas school board member has resigned from the school district after posting an image of a Ku Klux Klan member with the caption "I'm dreaming of a White Christmas" and several racist remarks on his Facebook page last Monday.

Hooks ISD Superintendent Ronnie Thompson told Raw Story that school board member Chris Harris submitted his resignation Wednesday. The district put out the following statement: "Chris Harris, a current Hooks ISD board member, released on social media statements which have been characterized as racially sensitive. Mr. Harris has removed the posts and replaced them with an apology.

The Board is conferring with legal counsel regarding what actions, if any, may be taken by the Board. The statements made by Mr. Harris are not reflective of the Board or the district. Mr. Harris is not an employee of the school district; he is a publicly elected official whose term expires in May 2015. Mr. Harris has submitted his resignation as of December 3, 2014. Hooks ISD school board will have a special called meeting to accept the Mr. Harris resignation and discuss options for appointing a board member to fill the vacancy. Until such time as the Board meets on December 8, 2014, the district will have no further comment."

Harris' original post was published last Monday after a grand jury in Ferguson, Mo., opted not to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson for allegedly shooting and killing an unarmed Black teenager, Michael Brown.

HOUSTON - A recent Houston Chronicle investigation found that "police have been nearly immune from criminal charges in shootings" in Houston and other large cities in recent years. In Harris County, Texas, for example, grand juries haven't indicted a Houston police officer since 2004; in Dallas, grand juries reviewed 81 shootings between 2008 and 2012 and returned just one indictment. Separate research by Bowling Green State University criminologist Philip Stinson has found that officers are rarely charged in on-duty killings, although it didn't look at grand jury indictments specifically.

I’m Not Going to Argue With You

kay so everybody has had, or is having debates on the Ferguson and New York no-bills. If we are unlucky, we have had to argue the points of injustice with many of our more conservative friends, who in many, but not all cases, happen to be White.

Quite frankly I have come to the point at which my mother so frequently came. A point in which she suddenly realized that given my relative lack of life experiences, there was no further any point in arguing or debating with me. "Boy, I'm not going to argue with you!" Argument over; maybe not settled.

So much has been said about the various proposals for body cams being placed on police officers. The pros of that argument have now been choked out with the brutal death of Eric Garner, at the hands of not one, but seven New York

City Police officers. It is clear that body cams won't protect the lives of Black men at the hands of inadequately trained at best, and criminally minded at worst, police officers.

I once heard someone say, "you can't clean a kitchen floor with a dirty mop, and you can't clean a neighborhood with a dirty cop." Body cam or not.

No, the arguments fall flat when one of the parties to the argument has never been racially profiled or had a friend murdered with no criminal investigation. I'm not even at the point of an indictment or a conviction. But hey, at least America is at least finally 'talking' about the grand jury.

Those American institutions that have been for so long cloaked in secrecy, are usually the things that lend themselves to the most abuse.

In fact, most of us don't

even know where we have been discriminated against, because so much of American culture has been hidden from us. Who's really behind Wall Street, Hollywood, and the White sheets. Nope, body cams for all they are worth, will not pierce the veils of secrecy that have become the hallmark of an unjust criminal, increasingly exploitive capitalistic, and a still culturally divided society.

But when the new body cams or approved, you can bet one thing for sure. It will not be minority businesses who get paid the hundreds of millions of dollars to provide them, and the only video that will be presented to the grand jury, will likely be that of tall 300 plus pound, Black men "fighting" for their lives.

HOUSTON - Carver High School theater students attended the Texas State Thespian Festival November 20-22. The event took place at the Dallas Convention Center and Omni Hotel.

Texas Thespians is one of the largest chapters in the nation of the Educational Theatre Association.

Recently, people all over the world celebrated World AIDS Day by showing their support for people living with HIV and AIDS and celebrating the lives of people who have died from the illness. This year’s theme was getting to zero, which means having hope that one day there will be zero new infections, zero discrimination against people who have HIV or AIDS, and zero deaths as a result of HIV and AIDS. The City of Houston hosted a number of events in honor of World AIDS Day. The AIDS Foundation Houston hosted its World AIDS Day Luncheon at the Westin Galleria on December 1, 2014. Dominique Sachse, Channel 2 News Anchor and Co-Chair of the AIDS Foundation Houston and Travis Torrence, Honorary Chair of the AIDS Foundation Houston attended the luncheon. Brandon Brown was the keynote speaker. Brown is an Infectious Disease Epidemiologist and the Director of the Global Health Research, Education, and Translation Initiative at the University of California Irvine Program in Public Health.

Harris Health System hosted its annual observance of World AIDS Day at its Thomas Street Health Center. Each year, people come to the Thomas Street location to honor lost loved ones by placing ornaments on a tree called the Tree of Remembrance. “The Tree of Remembrance is special to me because it showed me how to survive and understand HIV,” said Diana Rodriguez, a Patient Mentor at the Thomas Street Health Center. “I’ve been working at the Thomas Street Health Center since I was diagnosed with HIV in 1997”, said Rodriguez. “I understand what it’s like to be a patient, because I was one myself and my experience working here has allowed me to open my heart to everybody.”

This year’s observance was extra special because it fell on the 25th anniversary of the Thomas Street Health Center. The Thomas Street Health Center also happens to be the first freestanding HIV/AIDS facility in the United States.

On December 1, Legacy Community Health held a candle light vigil in honor of people who have died from AIDS. Names of the people who have died from AIDS were read and city and state proclamations in honor of AIDS were presented. State Representative Sylvester Turner read and presented the state proclamation and Councilman Ed Gonzalez read and presented the city proclamation.

Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee and State Senator Rodney Ellis also attended the vigil. After the vigil, guests were treated to dinner and the Normal Heart Movie Screening; a movie about HIV/AIDS. All events were free and open to the public.

Legacy Community Health offers HIV/AIDS testing and STD screening and treatment services at its Montrose, Lyons, North Street, and Calder Avenue locations. High risk groups receive free HIV testing as well as extended risk-reduction counseling. High risk groups include people who have had unprotected sex, people who have multiple partners, people who have had sex in exchange for drugs or money, and people who have shared needles. Clients can choose between confidential and anonymous testing. You will not have to give your name or any other contact information to Legacy Community Health if you choose an anonymous test. From November 29-December 1, 2014, Legacy Community Health offered free HIV testing opportunities in the community as well as information about a new HIV prevention drug called Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). On December 2-3, 2014, Legacy Community Health offered HIV tests at Houston-area Walgreens.

The first ever World AIDS day was celebrated in 1988. Public Information Officers James Bunn and Thomas Netter started the tradition of celebrating World AIDS day to educate people about AIDS and clear up misconceptions and stigmas that people held about AIDS. People were very afraid of AIDS and often associated the disease with gay and lesbian people. The people who did have AIDS were scared to talk

People who had AIDS were being fired, being evicted, and being denied social security benefits. The theme of the first couple of World AIDS days focused on youth. Some criticized this theme, because it undermined the fact that people of all ages could become infected with AIDS. Proponents of the theme argued that much of the discrimination and stigmas that surround AIDS are directed toward young people and the purpose of the theme was to debunk some of those misconceptions. Themes are chosen each year by the Global Steering Committee of the World AIDS Campaign (WAC) to highlight AIDS awareness within the content of other major world events.

AIDS has killed over 35 million worldwide and it has been named as one of the most deadly pandemics in human history. Although the HIV/ AIDS epidemic is getting easier to deal with thanks to scientific and technological advancement, it is still a major health concern because so many people are still becoming infected with the virus, don’t know how to protect themselves from contracting the virus, and are still holding onto inaccurate stereotypes and misconceptions. Here are some quick facts about the current HIV and AIDS situation in the United States: The number of new HIV infections has remained stable over the past 10 years, but the number of people living with HIV and AIDS remains high. “Someone becomes infected with HIV every 9 and a half seconds”, said Ciandra Jackson from Legacy Community Health.

African-Americans, gay men, and bisexual men are affected the most by the virus. Approximately 636,000 Americans have died from AIDS. About 15% or 1 out of 6 people who have HIV or AIDS do not know that they are carrying the virus.

Lactose Intolerance & African-Americans

Statement of the Problem An increasing body of research now documents the intricate and expansive linkages between nutritional deficits and the etiology of selected health conditions.

While a multiplicity of nutrients is present in a range of food products, dairy products embody an exceptionally large pool of those vitamins, minerals, and other nutritional elements required for the optimization of health.

However, some evidence exists that African-Americans may be at risk of nutrient deficits as a result of the under-consumption of dairy products because of lactose intolerance.

Purpose The purpose is that of addressing several key questions regarding African Americans and lac-tose intolerance. These questions are: • What is lactose intolerance and how prevalent is it among African Americans?

• Is the under-consumption of dairy products by AfricanAmericans associated with dietary deficits in nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, protein, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus?

• If so, what health risks may be associated with dairy nutrients deficits among African Americans?

• What strategies can be recommended to African-American physicians to address ongoing and/ or anticipated dairy nutrients deficits in this population?

Methodology Utilizing secondary data and research, the National Medical Association prepared a preliminary review of literature and identified key issues that can further inform recommendations regarding African-Americans, lactose intolerance, and possible nutrient deficits due to the underconsumption of dairy products by African-Americans. The National Medical Association then reviewed the draft statement. Data from the Department of Labor, Consumer Expenditures Survey, were analyzed.

Findings Research reveals that dairy milk alone supplies key nutrients.

The nine essential nutrients found in milk that are found in good or excellent levels include protein, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin B12, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus. Yet, AfricanAmericans and other minorities under-consume milk and other dairy products. While Caucasians spend a mean of $408.96 per household on dairy products, African Americans only spend an average of $253.41 per household annually.

Asian Americans spend slightly more – a mean of $362.42 per year.

These lower levels of expenditures can be explained, in part, by the existence of lactose intolerance among African Americans and other ethnic groups. This condition can lead to nutritional deficits that increase vulnerability to key chronic diseases. While some variation exists in the estimated prevalenceof intolerance, all researchers acknowledge that African Americans, Native Americans and Asians are disproportionately affected by this condition. It is important to note that many of these estimated prevalence rates may be inflated because they are based on earlier studies using a large 50g bolus of lactose, which is far greater than the amount of lactose that is likely to be consumed in any one meal.
