bear arms. Some wore camouflaged clothing and dark glasses that gave them the intimidating appearances of people you wouldn’t want to “mess with”. Carrying a concealed handgun license (CHL) has a way of empowering individuals who would otherwise flee from imminent danger or minor confrontations faster than you can say “Black Lives Matter”.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) founded in 1871, is one of the most influential lobbying groups in America. Lobby groups are powerful entities that promote their own agendas by influencing public opinion or government policy. They are famous for protecting the same Second Amendment Rights the Dallas protesters were promoting, but caught plenty of flak for not coming to the defense of Philando Castile, the African-American man who was executed by a Minnesota cop in front of his girlfriend and her four year old daughter. (Ruthless bastard). The NRA was initially formed, however, to improve the marksmanship of soldiers who kept missing their targets; those targets being Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. In my opinion, they are still missing their targets.

Why, on God’s green earth would ordinary citizens need more firepower than local police agencies? Why would anyone with common sense allow an 18 year-old in Texas to get a license to carry a shotgun, rifle, or AK-47 when many of them can’t pass the STAAR Exam, find a job, or buy alcohol until they’re 21? Proponents of “Open Carry” would say that if 18 year-olds could join the military, they should be able to buy guns. That too, however, wouldn’t have helped save the lives of five police officers in Dallas. They were killed by a former military man whose class rank in high school was 432 out of 435, according to most media accounts.

He was blown to smithereens by a Composition 4 (C-4) explosive delivered to him by the cousin of R2D2, the lovable robot of Star Wars fame. It was death “by any means necessary”…

mously famous when his picture was flashed across the screen for millions of people around the world to see.

Hughes was mistakenly identified as the gunman who started firing his weapon into the crowd of protestors.

He was photographed and identified by a viewer as a man seen walking around with a long rifle on his shoulders. On top of that, he was a camouflaged African-American male who raised suspicions, not knowing that his 2nd Amendment Rights and CHL came very close to getting him killed. In a bit of irony, his brother was one of the organizers of the event.

Ain’t that some ISH? As I watched the memorial services for the slain officers, I couldn’t help but feel some remorse for their children and families. Dallas paid the cost for Minnesota’s and Louisiana’s sins. Not since 9/11 have so many police officers lost their lives in one setting. At the same time, I experienced the same feeling for the Sterling and Castile families. Out of all of those senseless deaths, the most constant reminder is that something has got to change. President Obama said it best this way: “With an open heart, we can abandon the overheated rhetoric and the oversimplification that reduces whole categories of our fellow Americans, not just opponents, but to enemies. With an open heart, those protesting for change will guard against reckless language going forward. Look at the model set by the five officers we mourn today.

Acknowledge the progress brought about by the sincere efforts of police departments like this one in Dallas.

And embark on the hard, but necessary work of negotiation, the pursuit of reconciliation. With an open heart, police departments will acknowledge that just like the rest of us, they’re not perfect. That insisting we do better to root out racial bias is not an attack on cops, but an effort to live up to our highest ideals.”

It’s time to put down our guns…

National Need To Look In The Mirror Rev. Al Sharpton President, National Action Network

A

s I stood in a church pulpit on Sunday with 12 mothers of police brutality victims behind me, I raised the issue of three officers that were just brutally killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. On the second anniversary of the death of Eric Garner, his mother, Gwen Carr, had the courage to lead these brave women as we denounced both police brutality and violence against the police. As I addressed the congregation, I emphasized the fact that the murders of law enforcement are not only morally reprehensible and ethically intolerable, but they hurt the cause of these mothers (and other loved ones) pursuing justice. These family members will face a hardened criminal justice system that looks like it doesn’t want to appease people.

Even though these parents (who have suffered such immeasurable grief) and civil rights groups have consistently pushed for nonviolence, we are now watching lone actors intensify their pain with these cowardly murders.

Instead of carelessly pointing fingers at this crucial moment, we need a national look in the mirror.

On Friday, I spoke at the funeral for 37-year-old Alton Sterling whose gruesome death at the hands of officers was caught on film. The agony and suffering that I witnessed in Baton Rouge, for it to come back now from roads that I had just traveled, brings the point home even more. There cannot be a violent or revenge-type movement and achieve justice. Do people have the right to be angry? Absolutely. In fact, anger and rage are a normal human response to decades of grievances that have long been ignored. But anger cannot make us go and become that which we have been fighting. While people are full of frustration at a system that does not hold law enforcement to the same standards as the rest of us, we cannot

and must not forget that there are real victims like these mothers whose very real cases can be upended by horrendous shootings that harden society rather than make society understand our plight.

These mothers and other family members now have empty seats at their dinner tables. Children have lost a parent for good, and entire lives have been cut short — that is what we must not lose sight of. We are not fighting police; we are fighting wrong.

We are fighting people that would end someone’s life for no justifiable reason. But we cannot fight that doing the same and failing to denounce those that commit murder. This is why I, my organization, National Action Network, these mothers, other civil rights groups and all those pushing for peace have condemned the killings in Baton Rouge and Dallas as we continue to march for justice for police victims. There are some that seek to divide us for their own benefit, but we must not fall into that trap. It is possible to grieve for police brutality victims and grieve for officers. And yes, it is possible to hold law enforcement accountable, while praising the good work that many of them do day in and day out.

More Baton Rougesʻ Could Elect Trump Earl Ofari Hutchinson

ere are some key dates in presidential history, politics and elections that tell much about why the wanton murder of three police officers in Baton Rouge could loom big in 2016. The dates are 1964, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2001, and 2008. In 1964 GOP presidential contender Barry Goldwater ran hard on an unabashed state’s right, anti-civil rights, and a relentless savage of social programs stance. He was crushed by Lyndon Johnson. But he won a victory of another sort. He made conservatism a powerful force in American politics.

That transformed the GOP and presidential politics for decades to come. It eventually even pushed the Democratic Party to the right.

In 1968, GOP presidential contender, Richard Nixon, snatched Goldwater’s line, reshaped it into his Southern Strategy, that translated out to say and do as little about civil rights, painted a nightmarish vision of anarchy in the streets from the urban riots and campus upheavals. He spiced this up by cloaking himself firmly in the mantle of the tough guy, law and order candidate. It worked. He not only won, but made the Southern Strategy a staple in the playbook of subsequent GOP presidential candidates.

In 1980, GOP presidential candidate Ronald Reagan finger-pointed President Carter for his supposed abysmal failure to free the American hostages in the Iranian takeover of the American embassy. This was a major tipping point for the election and Reagan.

In 1992, Democratic presidential contender Bill Clinton rode the mass public fear and anger over the L.A. riots by outflanking President Bush on the GOP’s formula law and order issue, and promised if elected to put 100,000 more police on the streets.

He, not Bush, was seen as the guy who could best handle urban unrest in the White House.

In 2001, the mass 9/11 terror attack instantly rescued George W. Bush from plunging popularity ratings and the public perception of his and his administration as failed, flawed, and bungled. He shaped the image of himself as the president who could best handle any and all present and future terror attacks.

In 2008, terror was no longer the public’s obsession, but a failed, flawed Iraq war, an economy in free fall, and a potential financial collapse. Though Bush was not running. The blame for this fell on the head of the GOP and its presidential candidate John McCain.

This was just enough to seal the White House for a first term, junior senator, from Illinois and an African-American.

In 2016, there’s Baton Rouge, and before that the murder of five police officers in Dallas and the Nice terror attack. Taken together, these are crises that stoke anger, fear, insecurity, mania and a heightened even desperate search for the proverbial man on the white horse to reassure that the person in the White House will be hard-nosed on law, order, and security.

Trump will pull out all stops to make sure that when Baton Rouge is mentioned, he will be the only name that many voters jittery and angered over the heinous killing and terror attacks will reflexively think of. He took the first giant step in that direction by pilfering the line from Nixon’s presidential script and branding himself as the “law and order candidate.” There is some evidence that it has some resonance. Polls showed that after the Dallas massacre Trump had inched up on Clinton in the three states that will do much too decide the White House, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

Baton Rouge simply doubles down on the possibility of another poll bump up for Trump. That’s not all that’s deeply worrisome. There’s a historic parallel that gives an ominous cast to public sentiment about the always volatile impact of racial politics on an election. The civil rights movement in the mid-1960s firmly staked out the moral high ground for a powerful and irresistible movement for racial justice.

It was classic good versus evil.

THEY STOLE OUR MUSIC, WHY NOT STEAL A SPEECH?

ebster’s Dictionary defines the term, “steal” in three different ways. “To take (something that does not belong to you) in a way that is wrong or illegal; to take (something that you are not supposed to have) without asking for permission; and to wrongly take and use (another person’s idea, words, etc.).” According to the definition of stealing indicated here, if we were to go back into the archives of Black history it can clearly be concluded that there have been a wide range of things stolen from our culture as a whole.

As far as that’s concerned there are many things that have been stolen from other cultures that are represented in these United States as well. The country itself is not even exempt from this inclusion. A person doesn’t have to be a history scholar to know that Christopher Columbus and his entourage were not the ones that discovered America in 1492.

For we know that the Indians were already dwelling in an uncivilized America before it was said to have been discovered by Columbus. As time went on, our White counterparts would continue to steal ideas, inventions, businesses, concepts, creations, styles and yes even our music amidst a long list of other things that they have taken credit for down through the years. Like so many other fashions, these things were stolen, overlooked and carried on with no regard. So none of it came as a surprise to me when the rhetoric recently commenced regarding the wife (Melania Trump), of Republican nominee for President of the United States of America, Donald Trump; stealing First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech.

The Trump family through various

reports placed the blame on the family’s speech writer for the plagiarized speech echoed by Melania. But in all honesty, it is just what it is; theft at its best. It was not an honest mistake, but instead a representation of acts that have been committed against Blacks folks now and dating back until the times when our ancestors were first brought here to this country. I often state that there is just something about this Blackness that they don’t get.

Funny thing is, even though they don’t get it and they don’t like it; many of them very well envy it and try to be it as well.

In order for our readers to get the full understanding of what it is I am trying to convey here, I thought it best to include excerpts from both First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech and Melania Trump’s speech. That way, you can see for yourself. The highlighted parts contain words and phrases first spoken by the First Lady in 2008 as well as the speech that was given by Melania Trump just recently.

First Lady Michelle Obama said on August 25, 2008, “And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them… And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and to pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children -- and all children in this nation -- to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

Trump echoes nearly the same exact words rendered by First Lady Obama.

She said, “From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily lives.

That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son.” “And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

After reading the direct parallels of First Lady Obama’s speech and comparing it to Melania Trump’s, it can easily be determined that the speeches are in fact carbon copies of each other.

I’m almost certain that if Journalist Jarrett Hill, one of the first to realize the similarities in the two speeches’ had not brought this to the fore-front it would have been simply swept under a rug like so many other stolen elements from the African-American community. At the end of the day, the entire situation really comes as no surprise to me. Because White folks been stealing stuff from Black folks ever since the beginning of time and calling it their own. And if many of our readers were to do a thorough study of our history, it can be found that theft is nothing new in regards to some of our White counterparts.

2016 Interlocal Gene Locke Harris County Commisioner Precinct 1

Those extremely bumpy Houston roads violently rattle the suspension systems of thousands of vehicles carrying motorist across this vibrant city. In some Houston inner-city neighborhoods, meanwhile, illegally dumped piles of debris pose an eyesore and a health hazard to the nearby residents.

Who’s supposed to correct these problems: the city? the county? the state?

For many, that answer in itself – regardless of which agency bears responsibility – doesn’t carry much weight. They simply want it fixed immediately. And they don’t care where the money comes from simply because they more than likely pay taxes to each governmental entity.

That’s why, after I became Harris County commissioner in January, I immediately entered into an interlocal agreement with the city of Houston to use county funds to repair city streets, bridges and sidewalks, especially those around our schools. Also, I’m using Precinct 1 funds for a debris removal project that involves mowing vacant lots, removing trash and

wo years ago a police officer shot and killed Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., setting off local demonstrations and a renewed national dialogue about race, criminal justice and the frayed bonds between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve. Unfortunately the controversies are nowhere near settled as police shootings of African-Americans and others continue in a disturbing pattern.

But efforts in communities around the country to bridge the gaps between police officers and residents also continue, as exemplified by the third annual “Building Bridges Between Law Enforcement & Youth” sports tournament organized, sponsored and led by Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen. It will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at Sam Houston High School, 9400 Irvington Blvd. in Houston.

“It starts with our the future of our community, our young people, meeting in a relaxed and fun environment, with the diverse men and women in the Precinct 1 uniform whose dedication to public safety and heart-felt obligation as public servants knows no limits,” Constable Rosen said. “I hope people of all ages will take advantage of this amazing opportunity, and this year’s version will include an expanded list of services for all ages.”

In addition to the soccer matches and 3-on-3 basketball games, a rainbow of health services and information will be available free at the event. The no-cost offerings include child immunizations, vision screening for kids and school supplies.

In return, I’m asking Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to pledge some of the city’s Community Development Block Grant money to fund county programs and services in Precinct 1.

Since a large portion of Precinct 1 is in the city limits, it’s only fitting that both entities help each other to improve the quality of life for all Harris County residents. I’m hoping this will break down the bureaucratic barriers that prevent problems from being solved just because they are outside a particular governmental entity’s jurisdiction.

During different administrations, the relationship between the city and the county deteriorated over disagreements and misunderstandings. While both the city and county

That way we will make a lasting contribution to well-being in the Houston area.”

Since taking office in January, Turner has demonstrated a willingness to work with the county on joint projects. And my colleagues on Commissioner Court also are supportive of the joint cooperation.

Obviously, officials with both entities realize the benefits of sharing our funds and resources.

We all know funds are tight in the public and private sectors. So agreements like this will stretch the public dollar.

The first Houston projects that Precinct 1 funded are the street repairs in the NRG Park area. The precinct will pay $12.5 million for the ongoing repairs on Holly Hall, Knight, El Rio and Ardmore. The

Of course, citizens in unincorporated Precinct One can still expect continued excellent services in road, bridge and park improvements.

In essence, it’s you the taxpayer who benefits when the county and city put aside egos and political agendas to work together. That is what I am committed to do through the end of the year.

The 3rd Annual Go DJ Awards

Houston- The NRG Stadium was filled with many Houston celebrities for the 3rd Annual Go DJ Awards. Everyone was dressed in their best, and was ready to receive a night full of entertainment and awards. Go DJ Global is a Houston based marketing and promotions company that helps elevate and create platforms for upcoming and established music artist. They attract many DJs all over the world to help them gain the publicity they need in order to be successful. The Go DJ Awards have been held for the last three years, and have progressed significantly each year.

Many celebrities arrived at the stadium around 6:30 for the exclusive red carpet, where they participated in numerous interviews with different media outlets all over Houston. There was a pre-show before the event, and after, many artist took the main stage throughout the show for their performances including, Just Brittany, Nessascary, Jazz, Cityy1000, DJ XO, Paul Wall, and Jaye Valentine, just to name a few.

The show was even more elevated when Mayor Sylvester Turner took the stage, and the award show received an official proclamation from the City of Houston declaring that July 18th will be the official day for the Go Dj Awards. He not only spoke to the audience, but also thanked them for their continued support.

Before the show, I received the opportunity to interview some of the stars of the show. DJ XO, who is a music producer and an artist, had expressed some of his expectations in regards to the show. He stated, “I expect for us to get together and to have a good time…it’s a lot of crazy stuff going on throughout the United States…but just to come together, and get our mind off of it and just enjoy music.” His advice for young aspiring artist is to “work hard and be consistent, and to put yourself in position, and when you get in position, stay in position and don’t quit.”

Entertainment

The beautiful Jaye Valentine expressed some of her thoughts on some of the issues that are tackling are nation. She stated, “I think that this is not a new thing. I think some old things are maybe bubbling up to the surface or resurfacing again. We are not tackling the root of the issue, and that’s why they keep coming up.”

To help unify our nation, Valentine believes that music can help bring unity, and artist can use their music and talents to help bridge the gaps that are currently separating our nation. In regards to the show, Valentine was very excited and very honored to be a part of the show.

In addition to, Cityy1000 is a rapper who is very passionate about his craft, and who is currently working on a project called The Street Angel. In regards to the show, one of the things he was looking forward to was seeing different artist take the stage. He expressed, “I’m looking forward to seeing other artist perform as well.” In regards to aspiring artist, his advice is “to be yourself, and to stay authentic.” He further expressed that artist must, “Say nothing that you have never not done, and do nothing that you have never not done, but to never be afraid to try something different.”

Although the show was a success, there is always plenty of room for growth for the next year, and the upcoming years after that.

Some of the goals that Velma Trayham, CEO of Think Zilla expressed, “I expect the Go DJ awards in year five, that people will be flying from near and far to actually attend this event. It’s going to be like none other.” Velma couldn’t have put on a good show without the help from her team Hi-C, Kurt Agomuo, and many other people who helped make the show a great success. Power Recap Episode 301: “Call Me James”

Before I recap the first episode of season three of the most craved for show ever, the Starz hit Power, I would like to vent a little about the length of time between seasons these days. I remember when most television shows premiered in September, broke for winter hiatus, and then aired season finales in May. Who came up with this idea of ten to thirteen episodes of every twelve months? How could that sounds right to you? It should be a crime to make us wait this long for Power. But I digress. Back to Power.

Season three opens much the same way as season one except Ghost aka James St. Patrick has replaced his ride or die wife, Tasha, with high school ex-girlfriend turned current sidepiece, Angela, whom he escorts to his club Truth.

Ghost has gone legit, having disposed of his street life in a series of breakups and killings last season. This episode entitled “Call Me James” captures the immediate fallout of Ghost’s strategic moves to put his criminal past behind him.

James will find that he traded in one set of problems for completely new ones. On the domestic front, he is now living in Angela’s small apartment which has them bumping into each other as they get dressed for work in the mornings. And for another dose of reality, Angela is now asking to meet his children. He agrees, knowing that will be a touchy subject with Tasha. James shows up at his former home with Tasha to discuss Angela meeting the kids and Shaun’s death. Together they sit down with their children to explain why he isn’t living there and why Shaun is dead. The son isn’t having it. And Tasha isn’t having Angela meeting her kids just yet. Tasha only seems to believe that James had nothing to do with Shaun death after Tommy confirms that he and Ghost were together and that he couldn’t have killed Shaun.

Furthermore, last season we found out that Kanan escaped the fire Ghost set for him and Lobos survived his prison shanking with enough fury to strike a deal with Tommy; kill Ghost and he will let Tommy and Holly live. As Andre aka Dre will point out, James is not completely safe to stop looking over his shoulder just yet.

Meanwhile, Greg is still out to prove that Angela is dirty. He shows up at Truth trying to intimidate Kantos. Kantos gives Greg the boot but is fired in front of the rest of the staff and escorted from the premises before he can tell Ghost about the encounter. James promotes Andre who isn’t ready to go straight; he just wants to look clean as he later tells James. This is sure to be a problem for James later.

Tommy has taken over the operation but without Ghost’s street savvy and discretion. He and Julio bubble wrap two men from a rival street gang and throw them off of a building.

Tommy shoots one and shows his face the other, which causes Julio to seek out Ghost. Julio tells Ghost that Tommy is going to get him killed and reveals to Ghost that they are still picking up packages for Lobos. James selfishly tells Julio that he is no longer in the business and that he is on his own dealing with Tommy. Things start to add up as James searches security footage to figure out who left the bloody card in his office.

He sees that Tatiana, one of his employees, left the card and goes to her apartment only to finds her butchered. This knowledge leads Ghost to tell Andre that it is probably a good idea to stay strapped.

Meanwhile, Angela is still trying to redeem herself at work. She is still concerned about Greg returning to work and requests a transfer but is told that she has to remain on the case because Lobos isn’t dead. She has a face to face with him in prison and later tells Ghost that he is still alive confirming for him what he already knew.

She also questions James about Julio showing up at the club. James tells her that Julio was only coming to tell him about Tommy’s escapades.

He reassures her that he is out of the business but there is a sense that they are not being straight with one another.

When Power started, Ghost aka James was always several steps ahead but it seems that he may be losing some of his edge. Could it be that Angela and his desire to become straight have distracted him so much that he made some possible fatal mistakes?

Free Health & Wellnes Symposium for African American Women Hosted by American Heart Association

GO RED GIRLFRIEND BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO PUT THEIR HEART HEALTH FIRST

HOUSTON - To raise awareness that heart disease is the leading cause of death for African American women, the

American Heart Association (AHA) and African American Leadership Circle (AALC) hosted Go Red Girlfriend, a three day health and wellness event. The event kicked off with Taste of Soul, a VIP Reception at the American Heart Association offices.

Attendees enjoyed Simple Cooking with Heart food demonstrations with heart healthy appetizers and entrée items that were prepared by four local chefs and one celebrity chef. Participating

chefs included Ja’Nel Witt, Keisha Bocage, Tim Sadler, Ivory Watkins and Jacklyn Davis. Special thank you to

event chairs Jackie Adams and Cheryl Solomon and the entire AALC for making the event a success.

The “All About Me!” Women’s Health Symposium was hosted at the Third Ward Multi-Service Center. The free conference included health screenings, health education sessions, an interactive cooking demonstration, and fun physical activity sessions facilitated by experts in the field.

The afternoon included

Pkaye Washington, National Go Red Spokeswoman who she shared her heart story. The American Heart Association (AHA) also presented information on Texas advocacy initiatives, and a call to action for attendees to register for the High Blood Pressure Text Campaign. The symposium also featured educational videos; the CPR anytime, Go Red for Women, Know your Numbers and #YouGoGirl Well Woman exam. The symposium concluded with an interactive Empowerment session featuring a panel of experts with a Q & A session to engage and help educate attendees on the importance of living a heart healthy life.

Go Red Girlfriend concluded with “Bringing Our Hearts to the Altar” praise and worship service at Hope Church Pearland.

Information regarding cardiovascular disease and stroke was distributed to the congregation along with critical information regarding high blood pressure. The Sunday worship concluded with a message from First Lady Desireé Eastland on living a

heart healthy life. The church also hosted a heart healthy reception for Heart and Stroke Survivors.

HOUSTON - Miller Lite and Daymond John, who is the CEO of FUBU and an investor on ABC’s Shark Tank, launched a national tour in Houston in order to find the next great business. This was the first time that the Miller Lite Tap the Future Live Pitch visited Houston, and gave five semifinalists a chance to pitch their businesses to Daymond John and three other judges for a chance to win $20,000.

The businesses that were competing in the Houston event were Honeymoon Brewery, Spendebt, Delivery Guardian, Partake, and Gofer Delivery Services.

Although each company did a great job with their pitches, there could only be one winner. Honeymoon Brewery came out on top, and became $20,000 richer. Honeymoon Brewery will now move on to compete in the national finals to try and win more money.

The event has been broken down into three phases. The first phase included paperwork as entrepreneurs signed up their business and submitted all necessary forms in order to compete. Phase two includes the live pitch events, which are currently going on, and are being held in Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and Philadelphia. Phase three will be the national finals, and the top six winning teams from each of the live pitch events will present their business to a panel of judges TX-10

and one team will win the grand prize of $200,000. The audience at the live pitch events also received a chance to participate.

Three guests in the audience were selected and received the opportunity to pitch their business idea for a chance to win $500.

This is the fourth year for the event, and they received over 15,000 applicants. This event is designed to help people launch their business and their products. This is Miller Lite’s way of giving back to their community. In the past years, each business that has won from Tap The Future, have done very well in regards to their success. According to Steve Canal, who is the national community affairs for Miller Lite, he expressed that, “The three business that have won prior today, are all millionaires.”

Daymond John is not only a successful businessman, but he is also an author to the book The Power of Broke. He expressed that in his book, the people he wanted to target were “the people that need hope and they realize that they want to have that sense of empowerment and they don’t know where to start.”

HOUSTON - Byran Richmond has overcome a lot of obstacles, but has never let those obstacles stop him from making his dreams come true. He is not only a hard worker, but is also well educated graduating from Sam Houston State University with a degree in General Business, and a minor in Finance.

Richmond is the owner of Rich Inks, which is a screen T-shirt printing service. He first received his first start when he was in college, and would drive back home to help his uncle make T-shirts from his garage. His uncle, Oscar Richmond, was the one who pushed him to branch out and start his own T-shirt business. “He had been telling me for three to four years…you need to go ahead and start up your business,” expressed Richmond. Richmond started putting things in motion back in 2013, but he didn’t officially launch his business until last year. He not only gives all of the credit to God, but to his uncle as well. He admired his uncle’s hard work, perseverance, and determination to be successful.

Richmond stated, “I give him all the credit, he taught me every single thing that I know.”

The one thing that Richmond likes about making T-shirts is the fact that he can help and satisfy someone else through his business. “Its one of the best feeling about making T-shirts, is being out and about, and seeing your products, and making people happy.” In order to make his customers happy, he also works with others, who are graphic designers to help create the best designs for his shirts and his customers.

He doesn’t believe in ripping people off by being extremely expensive. He wants people to have a great product, and he feels he can produce that at a great reasonable price.

Every business wants to be successful, but with success, there are also some challenges that one may face along the way. For Richmond, that challenge was getting people to stay committed to the shirts they would order. Furthermore, sometimes communication was a challenge as well when trying to understand what customers would want. Many conversations are conducted through emails and text messages, and some times some things would be miscommunicated.

“I was just going through a spell where I was learning through trial and error.” Through these challenges, he has learned a lot and has implemented changes in his business in order to make sure that he doesn’t have these issues again.

He wants the best for his clients, and is constantly reflecting on how he can progress, and satisfy the needs of his customers.

Richmond has many goals that he has for his business. One of his short-term goals is to open a building in Pearland. He recently moved to that city, and he would love to start a new store there.

In addition to, he would like to start creating shirts using vinyl printing, which allows him to create more individualized products. A long-term goal that Richmond has for is to eventually be able to train others to help run his business.

“Ideally, I would want to step back and let my money work itself.” He would also like to venture off in to different businesses such as owning a bowling alley, and even getting involved in real estate. In order to invest time into those dreams as well, Richmond would need a team to help his run is T-shirt business before he can start other business adventures.

The advice that Richmond has for future entrepreneurs is to always have more than one source of income and never put all your eggs in one basket. In addition to, he stated that people have to take a risk. “If you never fail you’ll never know. Failing is not losing, failure is a success, and you just have to figure out a better way to do it. In order to be successful, you have to fail.

If you never fail, then you’ll never know what the best is.” He also expressed that running a business is not going to be comfortable. Many people do what is safe, and are afraid to take risk, but people must branch out of their comfort zone when they are trying to start and run a successful business.

Balancing time is one thing that Richmond has to do. He not only runs a successful T-shirt business, but he is also a teacher, and a father of two. He couldn’t do what he does now if it wasn’t for the support of his lovely wife. His wife helps out with orders, and manages the website. She also reminds him about promoting his business on social media. She is his rock, and he couldn’t imagine life without her.
