Since the beginning of the year, we have added three new members to the board of directors, so I thought this would be a good chance for me to introduce them and explain what the board does.

A board of six directors governs the appraisal district. The board is made up representatives from taxing units such as the City of Houston, Houston Independent School District and Harris County. In addition, there is a representative for cities other than Houston, school districts

THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF APPRAISAL DISTRICT BOARD MEMBERS

Our three new board members are Wanda Adams, who represents HISD; Al Odom, who represents the City of Houston; and Pete Pape, who represents school districts other than HISD. You probably know of Wanda Adams from serving three twoyear terms as the Houston City Councilmember for District D. She was elected to the HISD Board of Education in 2013. She is a professor of political science at Texas Southern University where she earned her bachelor of science degree in public affairs and a master’s degree in public administration.

Santa Clara County Judge Aaron Persky’s velvet glove sentence of 6 months, of which he’ll serve only three months, to former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner after his rape conviction was no aberration.

The case of Brian Banks, falsely convicted or rape, and who served five years, before exoneration, was quickly cited in contrast to that of Turner. Banks, like Turner, was a star high school athlete with a promising college career ahead. But unlike Turner, Banks is African-American.

In both cases, their sentences were ultimately a judge’s call. The power of a judge to show mercy or throw the book at a defendant is welldocumented. However, far murkier and ambiguous is just how much the racial attitudes and views of judges color their sentencing decisions.

Two university researchers in 2012 tested just how racial bias determines whether a judge such as Persky will slap a long prison stretch on a defendant such as Banks or give a defendant such as Turner the kid glove treatment. The researchers

In addition to the three board members I have mentioned, we also have Ed Heathcott, who is the chairman and represents cities other than Houston, Mike Sullivan, who is the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector and Glenn Peters, who represents the utility, water and other special districts.

It is important to know the responsibility of the board of directors. Board members select the chief appraiser, adopt the annual district budget, contract for necessary services, appoint the chair and secretary of the Appraisal Review Board and ensure the district follows policies and procedures required by law.

property or make decisions affecting the appraisal records. In fact, members of the board may not discuss appraisal matters with the chief appraiser except in open meetings or other public meetings or in closed meetings held for the purpose of discussing pending lawsuits.

It is the policy of our board of directors to provide the public with a reasonable opportunity to address the board on the subject of the policies and procedures of the appraisal district and on any issue under the board’s jurisdiction. Addressing the board can be done either at each regularly scheduled board meeting, or by submitting a written complain about the policies and procedures of the appraisal district or the Appraisal Review Board.

JUDGE PERSKY IS NO ABERRATION WHEN IT COMES TO SENTENCING were careful to control for similarities of the crimes, and backgrounds of the defendants, the quality of their attorneys, the attitudes of the defendants, and most importantly the prior criminal history of the defendants. This is crucial because one of the counter arguments to the charge of the racial double standard in sentencing for Whites and Blacks is that blacks are more likely to have a longer rap sheet than whites, and judges must take that into consideration.

They examined cases based on the randomness in which judges are assigned cases to assure that there was a large enough sample of cases.

This meant that on average that judges would get the same types of cases with the same mix of defendants and crimes. The study found that judges in most cases were far more likely to give a black defendant a harsher sentence than a white defendant. This markedly increased both the incarceration rate for Blacks and the length of their sentence.

There’s another reason why judges are more prone to give hand slap sentences to a Turner while throwing the book at a Banks. It comes down to how a judge sees a defendant even before he or she becomes a defendant. Judges are human and susceptible to the same

biases, prejudices, and swallowing of stereotypes as anyone else.

Countless tests of implicit racial bias have shown that many Whites view blacks as more threatening, menacing and crime prone than Whites.

The implicit bias is there even when judges to all appearances make every effort to appear fair and unbiased toward a defendant. But yet there are many points during the process that it can come in. Judges make decisions on bail, pretrial motions, evidentiary issues, witness credibility, and jury selection, and instructions to the jury.

Judges also can and do weigh the status of the defendant in the community, and the support that he or she gets from outsiders such as parents.

Turner’s father’s pleading letter to Persky was a prime example of how a White, upstanding, middleclass family’s plea for leniency can make a big difference to a judge who does not view a defendant as an inherent threat based on the judge’s bias. A judge’s willingness to bend over backwards toward a defendant or to be tough is deeply influenced by prosecutors. Studies have found that they are more likely to charge blacks with crimes that carry minimum sentences and give the judge little or no room to exercise their discretion in sentencing. This didn’t happen

with Turner. Persky was not required to impose a mandatory minimum sentence that would have almost certainly amounted to real time in a prison. Both the prosecutor and Turner’s attorney were careful not to harshly lambaste Persky for this.

There’s yet one more factor that reinforces judicial bias in sentencing and that’s how jurors deal with their implicit racial biases.

The nation is mourning once again; senseless violence has again taken innocent lives, ripped families apart and left us with many unanswered questions. As we grieve and try to comprehend the incomprehensible, it is important that we remain united and not fall into the trap of division and hatred. Homophobia and Islamophobia are twin partners to terrorism. As information is slowly being revealed in Orlando, what we are witnessing is a blatant act of homophobia and evil in its worst form. But what is also transpiring in the aftermath of this tragedy is a knee-jerk reaction to blame Islam and Muslims.

This is precisely what terrorists, extremists and groups like ISIS want — division. We cannot succumb to such fear and disunity; we must remain vigilant in our will to stop any and all acts of terrorism, and denounce both homophobia and Islamophobia.

This is a moment where we are being tested, and we cannot fail by answering hate with more hatred.

The LGBTQ community has long suffered from attacks, discrimination and injustice in society. Despite progress on marriage equality, the community still faces prejudice and unfairness in housing, employment and elsewhere all throughout the country. In addition, the prevalence of open homophobic statements in our discourse should disturb everyone.

I myself have been in churches, or given lectures, or listened to guests/callers on my national radio show and been disappointed by people who otherwise consider themselves ministers, activists or social justice seekers express such homophobic views. I’ve also been shocked at the vitriolic language used by some clergy members in public and in private.

Bigotry against the LGBTQ community lead to the spirit of this man’s horrendous hate crime in Orlando this past weekend. That is why homophobia in any form cannot be tolerated whether it’s overt biased laws that some try to implement, or subtle comments that others feel comfortable making. None of it is okay, ever.

As we take a stand against homophobia, it is simultaneously important that we do not blame Muslims or the religion of Islam. This was a horrific act committed by a person professing to follow Islam who clearly didn’t understand the religion, and who frankly could have been a member of any religion. Muslims did not perpetrate this massacre; a crazed homophobic monster did. Our response to this immense calamity cannot be Islamophobia — which I’ve also heard go unchecked. Some are sadly using this catastrophic incident to push more fear, more hatred and their own political agendas. Instead of blaming billions of people for the devastating actions of one individual, we must also stand with the Muslim community so that they are not scapegoated and subjected to hatred and bias attacks.

The goal of terrorism is to strike fear and terror into the hearts of people so that they feel unsafe to go about their daily lives. Another goal of terrorists and extremists is to create an environment where we are pitted against one another and where we answer hatred with more hatred.

President Obama said there is no known evidence yet that the Orlando shooting was directed by ISIS or part of a larger plot, but ISIS allegedly was so quick to claim the shooter as one of their own because this is what they want. We cannot allow the terrorists to win. Groups like ISIS want Muslims to believe that they are not welcome in the United States and in other western countries, when nothing could be further from the truth.

BLACK LIFE MATTERS

Nowadays there is no safe place and no respect for anybody.

People do what they want to do, say what they want to say and have no regard for what they are doing or who they are doing it to. Back when I was coming up things used to be a little different.

In my day, even what the young people refer to now as, “thugs” and “hustlers”, in our community they even had respect for the elders and others. They might have had their issues but it was just some things that even “thugs” in our day just wouldn’t do. But here we are in 2016, and not only are Blacks being attacked through various platforms and people on a massive scale but so are other people from other races and nationalities.

However, because I happen to be Chairman of a Black newspaper that targets Black people which circulates in the Black community; I must always consider Black people in respect to my writings. This is why I have entitled this particular editorial, “Black Life Matters”!

It just makes no sense the level that some people will go to, to show their hatred. There are people that you don’t have to do nothing to at all; they just have a problem with you. You can be walking down the street and not know a person but can be talked about or attacked just for being yourself. Members of the Black community know this all too well on many different levels. It’s the type of life that the average Black person is used to. The crime is being Black, simple as day.

But I have to admit when I heard of the latest massive shooting that took place in Orlando, Florida it just really makes me shake my head. As previously stated, there is no

safe place and no respect for anybody or anything. On June 10, hundreds of people left home with the expectation of partying and going out to enjoy themselves with like-minded people.

Little did they know after the opening of the next day, a tragedy would occur that I’m sure would change their lives forever. The morning of June 11 around 2am, a club named, Pulse in Orlando was having, “Latin Night” for its patrons. From various reports throughout the media, it appears that this was a gay nightclub.

I have never been one to discriminate or dominate one’s preferences. People are entitled to be people, regardless of their skin tone, sexual orientation or beliefs. Whatever that choice is, the penalty certainly shouldn’t be death for any reason.

As it is, over 300 people were gathered in this club doing what people go to clubs to do, I assume; when a gunman by the name of Omar Mateen stepped on the scene. He was engaged by a police officer who returned fire, right before entering the joint and opening fire upon the patrons.

After other officers arrived on the scene, Mateen began to move his executions further into the hinder parts of the club and commenced to taking hostages. From various reports, patrons were completely caught off guard and did not know what was going on, with the mixing of the dark scene, loud music and constant fire. Of all the different messages that were spoken and relayed, it was reported that Mateen went into a restroom, where many people were trying to escape his wrath.

Upon injuring one of the hostages that he had taken and with all of the chaos going on from Mateen’s opening of fire, it was said that

his gun jammed. At which point, one of the hostages reported that he said, “I don’t have a problem with Black people”. But he went on to say that he, “wouldn’t stop his attack until America stopped bombing his country”.

Now of all of the things that were said and done, I just really wonder why this was one of the statements reported? What in the world, did Black people alone have to do with the shooting of a gay nightclub hosting “Latin Night” at that? But there it is no matter where you go or what you do the Black race is always going to be at the forefront of things for one reason or another. That’s why I am stating once again, “Black Life Matter”.

As the story continues many patrons were wounded, injured and killed. Mateen was found to have made a couple of 9-1-1 calls and made contact with the local news to let them know that he was the perpetrator and that he was carrying his attack out in the name of Islam. Ultimately, it’s reported that there was 49 people killed in the attack and the 50th person was the shooter himself.

News reports say that SWAT officers drove an armored vehicle through the wall and used distractions to shoot and kill Mateen.

The entire ordeal is just a really sad situation and more sad that innocent lives were lost because of people’s vendettas. At the end of the day, people are just not respected no where these days.

THIRD WARD - It has been said, “When you fear your struggles, your struggles consume you. When you face your struggles, you overcome them.”

Some people have been blessed to be the epitome of the thought that this sentiment exemplifies.

Such has been the case of twoterm breast cancer survivor and founder of Sisters Network Inc., Karen Eubanks Jackson.

Jackson hails from North New Jersey. She is married to Kyle Scott Jackson and has one daughter, Caleen Allen and two granddaughters, Alexis and Brianna Allen. At a time in her life when she was operating her own business as a hair weaving specialist and living life to the fullest; she was confronted with a life-changing experience that served to change life as she had known it completely.

The year was 1993 she and her husband, had made Los Angeles, California their new home. Generally healthy and well-rounded all together, Jackson had always been the proactive type in regards to her health. Being aware of her family history, she started getting mammograms as early as age 35. Although, she listened to medical professionals over the years tell her that everything appeared to be fine; she could not deny the internal feeling beckoning her that something was wrong with her right breast.

At the age of 50, persistent that more than a mammogram be performed on her, she insisted that her Doctor recommend any other tests that were available. She wanted to satisfy her curiosity and alleviate any doubt within her mind that something could be wrong with her breast. Upon her request, the Doctor recommended that she have an ultrasound. All doubts were erased and a 3.5 mass was found in her breast that had been there for about five to six years, prior. She later found out that it could have been detected at a much earlier stage, had the facility that she TX- 4

had been going to suggested an ultrasound. However like a lot of other individuals, she was not given everything that she needed because she didn’t know what to ask for.

After receiving knowledge of the mass, Jackson was given options such as having a mastectomy or a mammectomy of the lymph node. Ultimately, she had a mammectomy with removal of the lymph node.

She was blessed in the process because there was no lymph node involvement detected and she was clear of having breast cancer. She was recommended to go to UCLA, where she received chemotherapy for six months and radiation for six weeks. Undoubtedly, this ordeal proved to be a very traumatic experience for her and her family.

After finishing her treatment, Jackson was told by the medical professionals that she would only have five years to live due to her diagnosis. Not wanting to be away from her only daughter and grandchildren, she and her husband moved to Houston.

Once she got to Houston, she didn’t know anyone except for her daughter. She immediately began seeking out other breast cancer survivors.

She would attend conferences and visit hospitals speaking to various women whose lives were affected by the disease.

She felt like she needed that, “Sisterhood”.

During our interview she revealed that, “I was craving information from women that looked like me - I was going to support groups but I didn’t get that camaraderie and sisterhood that I needed personally.”

She felt that after all she had experienced, this was a necessity within her life. She wanted to gather as much information as she could about the disease that she had overcome. Just listening to other survivor stories’ and experiences and learning and sharing from one another was something that

she really felt would assist her along her journey. She expressed, “At that time, one thing that I found, was as a survivor with the economic and climate of the country towards African-American women was very poor. They were blaming everything on the survivor for not doing what they should do. And I thought to myself, trying to do what I’m supposed to do and going to the Doctor and following the instructions given; I still could have fallen through the cracks and died.”

Jackson realized that early detection with something as critical as breast cancer is imperative to one’s survivorship. However, even after having the knowledge that one is a victim, it is crucial that the person understands what to do.

She said, “After they give you the surgery and the treatment then you need to know how your quality of life has been adjusted and you have to find a new normal. All these things are up to the person to do. And some of us can do it better than others. And so my thought was if we had a blueprint of what survivorship looked like, then we would be ahead of the game as far as what to do, where to go and who to call.”

This element empowered her to want to do something more, than just survive breast cancer.

Hence the creation of Sisters Network!

In 1994, Jackson unselfish-

ly organized Sisters Network so that, “the next generation of people could do better surviving this disease”. The idea of a national network was placed in her heart because she understood the importance of needing a support base outside of where a person lives who may be confronted with breast cancer. She exclaimed that, “laws vary from state to state and city to city.” “So you really need to have good information; because in some cities you live in you have a less chance in surviving than others. And that’s criminal. So your knowledge as an individual plays a very crucial part in your survivorship,” she added.

She organized the organization with no money, nor guide. She simply had the, “passion and sustainability”, to want to help fellow women. Jackson had a desire to pattern Sisters Network as a, “support, research and informational type organization, where women could find what they needed and the resources to assist them with having a better chance at life; in addition to the camaraderie of a sisterhood that could help form and build long-lasting relationships.”

Today, Sisters Network is a nation-wide organization that is located in 22 states and has over 40 affiliate chapters. All of which are survivor-run and operated, any person within

the network can visit any city of the Sisters’ location and receive the help they need.

The main headquarters is located in Houston’s, Third Ward community at 2922 Rosedale Street, 77004. On a national basis, Jackson and her staff develop the information, literature and programs and distribute it throughout the network. Sisters Network subscribes to the creed, “Stop the Silence”!

Sisters Network has developed several groups to assist women across the country.

Teen for Pink is an awesome facet of the organization. It is geared towards training the next generation of young people so that they will have a breast-health base information platform for themselves. It also extends to help their mothers and other women of the community. Sisters’ encourages teens to collect the data within their family at an attempt to gather knowledge within the local community. Sisters’ also utilizes Teen for Pink to spread the word that the network offers free mammograms and ultrasounds for the women in the community.

The Network is also comprised of a Support Group that works to bring families together, the caregiver and the person that needs the support.

Additionally, Sisters’ has a program that assists breast cancer victims and survivors with the

many different costs associated to adjusting with the perils of having been affected with the disease. Jackson said, “Breast cancer is in nobody’s budget, so we strive to help take some of the sting out of being a survivor.” Sisters Network exists to aid the community with whatever resources that they have available through their programs. They also have held Annual Conferences since 1999. This year’s conference is focusing on, “Breast Health Matters”. It will take place in Detroit, Michigan on October 21-23.

When it comes to establishing an organization, Jackson says that, “Believing in yourself and surrounding yourself around people who believe in your mission and passion is vital”. Although establishing Sisters Network was no easy feat; due to Jackson’s humble and kind outlook for humanity, the network has seen much success over the years.

TWC Awards Grants for 2,007 Students to Attend High-Tech Summer Camps

AUSTIN – The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) awarded 27 grants totaling $1,821,958 to Texas universities and community colleges for summer youth camps that focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through the Governor’s Summer Merit Program.

The grants provide the opportunity for 2,007 students, ages 14 to 21, to attend camps that will help prepare them for future high-skill, highdemand jobs.

HOUSTON - With all the rain that has hit Houston lately, the sun is always shining at Sunny Smiles Publishing, which is owned by Publisher Katherine White. Katherine was an army brat growing up, and moved around a lot, but most of her life has been spent living in Houston.

As a writer, White looked forward to publishing for many years. She researched and explored many options in regards to different publishing companies, but couldn’t find anything that worked for herself. This prompted White to start her own publishing company, which launched in May 2013 with the publication of her own book, “Little Girls and Their Ponytails”. “It was kind of like a dream of mine to write my own books, and publish my own books…and I noticed that other people felt the same way. They needed a way to publish their own books,” expressed White. With a strong desire to help others, White wanted to give other authors a chance to reach their dreams of publishing their own creations.

White believes that “art impacts society”, and that many people creatively express themselves in different ways whether it is through poetry, writing and even visual arts, just to name a few. In regards to Sunny Smiles Publishing, White made it known that “a lot of her messages from Sunny Smiles authors are impactful.” For example, one of her books is about self-love, and another book is focused on honoring the men in boy’s lives. The books that this company publishes, promotes positive messages that is impacting our society in a positive way. White expressed that, “Not every book is rainbows and roses… but there is something positive there that will help someone or encourage someone.”

Sunny Smiles has to compete with many other publishing companies, but there are a few things that make her company unique. These things include the fact that she believes God gave her this gift, how her company is simple, and the way in which her company teams up with their

clients. Additionally, Sunny Smiles doesn’t take material from authors and try to change what they’ve created. “We want to keep the creativity and the message to be exactly the same”, stated White. She believes that the creativity is the most important part, and that it shouldn’t be taken from the original creator.

With every new client, White always learns something new, which ultimately helps her company progress in the direction that she wants to go. One of the main goals that White has for her company is to “keep going with the foundation from where it started.” She would also like to make sunny smiles a brand of it’s own by helping a lot of authors publish their stories, and tell their messages. Furthermore, she wants to build a team and “employ creative minds.” She wants a team of people who has a strong desire for creativity.

White stressed that her goals, are also her challenges as well. Although she wants to accomplish all of her goals, she also knows that achieving these goals won’t always be easy, and will require a lot of hard work.

There are a ton of publishing companies in business. It can be a huge challenge to find a company that you can trust with publishing your work, because of the number of scams that are currently out there. White believes that people can trust her, because she is trustworthy and honest. White clearly expressed that “Sunny Smiles is an honest company, authentic, and open. We communicate clearly. You will know everything.”

If an author chooses to trust his or her work in the hands of this company, according to White, they won’t be blind-sided by anything. The author will be informed throughout the entire process. When authors put their work in her hands, she doesn’t take it lightly, and she knows that she is holding someone’s dreams in her hands. Furthermore, she wants to do everything in her power to make sure that the author has a great experience while achieving his or her dreams of getting published.

Although White is proud of her work thus far, she gives a lot of the credit to her parents for how they raised her, and for what they taught her.

“My parents are amazing people and they raised me and my sister well. They taught us about faith, about trusting God, and about being yourself.”

Lastly, White mentioned that it is also very important to be confident and humble. She is very confident that authors can trust their work in her company’s hands. She is also very appreciative and humble in the work that she knows she can produce for aspiring authors.

Darlene Breaux Named Director of Special Populations at HCDE

Darlene Breaux

HARRIS COUNTY - Darlene Breaux is the new director of special populations for the Teaching and Learning Center at Harris County Department of Education.

Breaux, a resident of Alief, is a national trainer, former principal and special services coordinator who has 19 years of service in education. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Texas Southern University and holds a Master’s in Educational Management, with principal certification from the University of Houston Clear Lake, where she graduated with high honors. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi National Honor Society, and is active in the Alief community as a board member for the Alief YMCA. In addition, she is the former special services coordinator in Alief Independent School District.

Her personal goal as the new director is to oversee and support professional learning

opportunities for all teachers and educators who work with students who are being served in the special populations program.

“I just want to offer relevant and researched based learning opportunities for our teachers, our administrators, and district directors as well,” stated Breaux.

Her position falls in line with the mission of the Harris County Department of Education, which is focused on supporting Harris County, which serves 25 school districts and 44 charter schools. “My role is to support Harris County by offering enriching educational opportunities, but also providing value through the services we offer.”

According to Breaux, in Texas schools, there are students who speak more than a 120 different languages. “People don’t realize how diverse the students in our states are.

Ultimately, with all of those different languages, we have to make sure we are meeting those needs because of the growing number of Texas students who speak a different language.” Her position assists with providing instructional resources and strategies to for teachers to help with English language learners as well as bilingual education, and those who speak English as a second language.

Students that are served under the special populations are early childhood, students who are identified with dyslexia, students who receive accommodations through their 504 program, and the gifted and talented students, just to name a few. Furthermore, they also offer specialized programs to meet the needs of migrant students, and students

who are in foster care.

When asked about what challenges Breaux may face as she steps into this new role, she stated, “The challenge for me is making sure that I am meeting the needs of the district, and that I’m not trying to just come in and give a cookie cutter program of support. I truly want to make sure that I do a needs assessment to determine what are the true needs of our districts that we serve.”

She wants to make sure that she is providing the resources, services, and support that the districts, campuses, and teachers need, in order to truly service all of the students to make sure they are reaching their greatest potential. Furthermore, she also hopes that the teachers and educators that she serves will go back into their classrooms and implement all of the training and resources that they have received.

In addition to, Breaux can sit in teacher’s classrooms and observe, give feedback, and co-teach. These are just a few of the unique parts of what Breaux can do to better assist the teachers that are serving these students under special populations. According to Breaux, “1 in every 8 Texas school student need some type of special services. That could be 3 to 4 kids in your classroom depending on the number of kids you have.”

With these types of students, trainings are imperative in order to make sure that teachers are providing the best service to meet the needs of each student.

• Encourage your child to read grade-level books from a variety of genres.

• Make sure they keep a log of what they read to submit when they return to school.

• For fictional books, ask them to write a few paragraphs outlining the characters, setting, and plot of the book. AISD Student, Teacher From Hambrick Middle School Chosen for National Scientific Expedition

Angela Olivera and Stephanie ClarkeBrooks from H ambrick Middle School will head to the Caribbean in July. They will take part in a scientific expedition.

JASON Learning named them 2016

Argonauts. They will study with a team of prestigious scientists. The program is part of a hands-on science program in the Bahamas.

Olivera just finished her eighth grade year at Hambrick Middle School. Clarke-Brooks is

a science teacher and is Chair of the Science Department at the campus. Both will spend a week exploring and taking part in research experiments. The Argonautsexpedition is part of the JASON Learning Project. The curriculum engages students in scientific exploration through an active learning environment.

JASON Learning selected Olivera and Clarke-Brooks through a competitive application process. Each year, JASON Learning selects only a few teachers and students across the country.

The work on the expedition will make learning relevant for students. They will learn how they can apply scientific research in real-world settings.

Every day of the expedition will be an adventure for student and teacher Argonauts.

The selected Argos are divided into three groups.

Each Argonaut group will take part this summer in one of three scientific expeditions. Some will

head to the Bahamas, some to Maine and others will spend a week in Alaska.

The program includes Argonauts taking part in interactive field educational lessons. The Argos will also act as special ambassadors. They will feature their experiences through blogs, social media and photos. This will enable other students and the media to follow along on the adventure.

Organizers encourage the Aldine community to keep an eye out for posts on JASON Learning’s Facebook and Twitter pages from Olivera and Clarke-Brooks between July 15-21.

JASON Learning and the Argonauts program form part of a collaborative public-private partnership. In the Houston area, the program is underwritten by Chevron. First Lady Brenda Perry & Pastor Dayle Perry, Sr.

ACRES HOME - Job 8:7 bares record that, “Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.” During an interview with Dayle Perry, Sr., he paralleled his life’s story in accordance with these most prolific words echoed by Job. By his own admission, he is a witness that the latter end of his life has been far greater and more productive than his beginning. He makes no excuses for his past, but instead has chosen to embrace it and translate his many tests over the years into a glorious testimony.

He was born and raised in the Acres Home community with seven siblings, for a sum of four brothers and three sisters. He was educated in that same community as well and graduated from Carver High School.

Upon graduating high school, he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. There he served four years, including 18 months in Vietnam. After completing his tour, he married the love of his life Brenda. To their union were birthed four children, Brandon, Jocelyn, Dayle, Jr. and Denise Perry.

During the same time he also acquired employment with Briggs Weaver, working as a forklift and crane mechanic for over 15 years. Eventually, he was laid off and experienced a downturn in his life. This downward spiral resulted in a period of addiction to drugs and alcoholism which ultimately led to incarceration.

While, the Prophet Isaiah saw the Lord in the year that King Uzziah died in the 6th chapter of Isaiah, Perry informed that he received salvation during his incarceration. With a sober mind, Perry recalls reminiscing back to his fundamental rearing. His mother raised him and his siblings in the church. They had lived next door to a church on DeWalt in Acres Home, First Brook Cedron Missionary Baptist Church, under the late Pastor Leggett. Accordingly, he picked up his Bible and engulfed himself in God’s word. After returning home, he made haste to announce his calling to the pastor of his home church, Rev. Nickerson. From there, he was licensed to preach and placed on trial.

As Revelation 2:5 admonishes, that sometimes a person’s first works need to be done over, Perry became aware of this element during this initial phase of his ministry. He said, “When I was first licensed, I was in church and in between the streets still calling my name.” “After I got my play out, as my Pastor would say, I was then licensed into the ministry again in 1984 under Pastor Nickerson,” he added.

Four years later, he was ordained

by Pastor Nickerson. As a lay minister at First Brook, he served faithfully as leader of the Youth Department, Youth Pastor and Superintendent of School.

After the passing of Pastor Nickerson, the church held an election between him and the Assistant Pastor, Rev.

Religion

R.L. Small. Rev. Small was elected as Pastor and he was elected as Assistant Pastor. He continued on serving under Pastor Small, still laboring as Superintendent of Sunday School and became the Bible Study teacher.

In 2006, he was spiritually led to move his membership to Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the administration of, Pastor C.C. Lewis. He continued on in the ministry serving as a lay minister, Superintendent of Sunday School, Youth Pastor, Prayer Leader and Bible Study teacher. In 2012, Pastor Lewis passed away. But while in the hospital he commissioned Rev. Perry to govern the church affairs and remain in charge. From this experience, Rev. Perry was elected as Pastor over the 95-year-old spiritual pillar within in the community. As a steward, Pastor Perry made a decision to stay involved with the community around him.

Thus, he became a part of the Acres Home Super Neighborhood, Old Acres Home Citizen Council and Cora Street Civic Club.

He is also the founder of an outreach ministry, God’s Provision for a Purpose. This ministry was birthed out of a vision amongst him and two other brothers who were incarcerated with him, the late Nathaniel Johnson and Benjamin Eldridge. One day while imprisoned, the three men were sitting down in the, “Chow Hall” with their Bibles in hand. They were brainstorming ideas for helping to break the cycle. They made note of many of their fellow offenders who were released and would come right back within 30 to 90 days. After inquiring amongst some of them regarding the reason for their return; Perry remembers many of them informing that there was no structure in place for them to rebuild on. Many of them complained of not being able to obtain a job, being homeless and other elements. Hence they resorted back to the lifestyle and habits that they had become accustomed to. The three men despised the mockery of guards who would taunt ex-offenders on their way out the door. In hindsight, Pastor Perry recalled some of them waving, telling other brothers, “We going to save y’all bed for ya, because we know y’all will be back.” “So we said, ‘we’re going to prove them wrong!’”

Upon their various releases,

they merged together to birth God’s Provision for a Purpose. They organized and wrote up the bylaws and articles and hit the ground running.

The organization was created to assist with, “breaking the cycle of recidivism by catering to ex-offenders as they make their re-entry into society.”

Through this association, Pastor Perry has found that if you don’t give an ex offender some type of positive assistance within 30 to 90 days, many of them will digress to their former lifestyle. So by creating this outreach he was geared toward the idea that, “if you give ex-offenders a platform, you could save a life and a family.” He said, “If a dad falls the son is likely to fall and if the mother fall sometimes the daughter will follow. But, if you break the cycle the family can move forward.” This is a component that the three men, were aware of and were insistent upon combatting this growing phenomenon in the Black community. So far the outreach has seen much success.

As it relates to advice for members of the Black community, Pastor Perry expressed his desire for African-Americans pulling together the way they used to. He shared the following… “I was young in this Acres Home community, but when I was raised we as a people stuck together. Families knew families; neighbors knew neighbors and looked out for one another’s children. We may not have had much, but we loved much. Now that I’m old, one thing that I would like to see come back to the community is a togetherness of love for the family. Because there was a time that if I had a garden and picked my vegetables, I would give half of them away down the street; especially if a mother had a lot of children.

Those that had livestock, when they killed they would bring meat and pass it out to the families that didn’t have.

That was love and that’s what I would like to see for the Acres Home community and I believe if we put God first and the church being the pillar, we can do it. We don’t have to handcuff and beat people over the head with the Bible, but if we just let the love flow out of the church walls and give back to the community; it can be done.”

Today, Pastor Perry boldly stands and preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Many people relate to him,

because he uses his own testimony to share that a person can overcome in Christ. He has witnessed the street life from various spectrums and knows the perils associated with it. Pastor Perry is a first-hand living witness that, “God will restore.” He said, “You can lose a lot by not serving the Lord; but if you come back to Him, He will restore.” Pastor Perry also included his wife and children as a major part of his testimony of having overcome.

He shared that he abandoned his family and chose the street life over them at a point. He sympathized with all that his wife went through, as a result of his actions. He stated, “She went through hard times, raising my children alone.” “She could have divorced me and my children could have been in jail or anything… But the Lord fixed me and allowed me to come back and be a blessing; and now all of my family is in the church serving the Lord with me,” he added.

Pastor Perry expressed that he stands on Proverbs 3:5-6. The scripture reads, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” Concluding our interview he said, “I’m just a little nobody that God has elevated to be somebody and I don’t take it lightly. I’m enjoying the journey that the Lord has put me on and I keep looking for new and great things in the Lord.”

Pastor Perry has a remarkable story and has proven to be one of God’s anointed. The last week of June continuing into the month of July, Greater Zion MBC will be hosting a series of events to show their love and appreciation to Pastor Perry and his wife. On June 26, Pre Appreciation Services will commence at 3:30pm, Pastor Archie Thompson of St. Paul MBC (Son’s Day), July 9, Pastor’s Appreciation Youth Musical at 4pm, July 17, Pastor’s Appreciation Service, 11am Pastor Edwin Davis of Galilee MBC, July 24, Pastor Matthew of God’s Grace MBC at 3:30pm, July 31, Pastor Lloyd Giles of House of Prayer MBC (Thank You Service).

“The Lighthouse Church” presents: “In the Wait” Annual Singles Conference HUMBLE - If you’re familiar with Humble, Texas you’ve probably heard of “The Lighthouse Church”, one of the fastest growing congregations in the Greater Houston area. Snuggled neatly off the busy Highway 59 corridor, The Lighthouse Church sits on well-manicured lawns seemingly isolated from the rest of the world. The parking lot was unusually full on this Wednesday midday afternoon, something that’s a bit of a surprise for any church during this time of year with the exception being Vacation Bible School.

I parked my car and hurried to the sanctuary before I started sweating profusely under the heat of the Texas sun. What awaited me was a different type of “heat”, fueled by the burning passion and fire of Anthony O’Neal, a young renowned minister who has made his mark across America as a youth pastor, motivational speaker and community leader. “Quit comparing yourself to others”, said O’neal to a sanctuary filled with young adults and clergy.

“Learn how to dream and write down your vision!”

A star-studded lineup that included Evelyn Braxton from WE TV’s “Braxton Family Values”, Hollywood actress, Meagan Good, author DeVon Franklin, and O’Neal were guest panelists/ lecturers at the church’s “In the Wait” Annual Singles Conference that welcomes over 1000 men and women each year to share insights, tips, and resources on faith and relationships. Hosted annually by Pastor Keion Henderson and The Lighthouse Church, these spirit-led experts use their gifts to help single men and women gain a deeper understanding of how to live a life that is pleasing to God by waiting patiently on Him. The conference will also mentor participants on how to build strong, Christ-centered families, as well as how to be restored spiritually,

economically, and financially from past relationships. Panelists will also instruct conference attendees on how to manage finances more responsibly. “You must become financially stable”, exhorted O’neal . “Budget your money and make wise decisions”. “You have to get out of debt and stay out of debt”. “Stop living from paycheck to paycheck”.

According to his website at “anthonyoneal.com”, O’Neal has orchestrated youth conferences with over 3,000 in attendance, as well as concerts and other events. Industry leaders Mason Betha, Kirk Franklin, Deitrick Haddon, Vashawn Mitchell, Johnathan McReynolds, Canton Jones, Mali Music and Tye Tribbett are a few of those who have been connected to Anthony’s events. Sarah Jakes, GooGoo Atkins, Letoya Luckett, Brian White, Flex Alexander and Actor Kel Mitchell have joined O’neal’s endeavors to help lead the nation’s youth to a path of greatness. He has been an integral part of several conferences including Bishop T.D. Jakes’ “Mega-Fest”, Bishop I.V. Hilliard’s “Spiritual Encounter”, “Catalyst Leadership Conference” and “Dave Ramsey Smart Conferences”. Anthony believes in doing ministry outside of the church walls. How to Love a Black Woman 1.

It takes a real man to love a Black woman! Many think that Black women are difficult to handle, and at times this may be true. However, a Black woman is strong, fearless, independent, committed, supportive, and beautiful. Black women know what they want, and at the end of the day, they just want to be loved. “Black women are unique. Be careful and they’ll be gone in a blink.

They will love and nurture you, but need to be loved and nurtured back”, stated Charlotte J. Davis, Ph.D. So, if you’re thinking about loving a Black woman, there are just a few things you need to know.

Don’t take advantage of her- Everyone wants to feel appreciated, and if you have a good Black woman who takes care of the house, the kids, and most of all you, her man, then show her some love, and appreciate her back. Ever heard of “just cause” gifts? These are gifts that are random and given just because you thought of her. This appreciation doesn’t have to be an expensive gift; it could be a simple card, flowers, or even her favorite candy. Let her know that you appreciate everything that she does.

Support her- There is nothing sexier than a man who supports his woman.

A Black woman is going to support her man no matter what. Return the favor and support her.

Some men feel that if a

woman is becoming too successful, then they see this as a threat to them.

Don’t be intimidated by her success, and don’t knock her down for her progression in life. As a Black woman, there are many barriers that she is still facing on a day to day basis, just like a Black man. Encourage and uplift her to continue to grow, and you will also benefit from her success.

Don’t get comfortableMany men will do all of the wonderful things at the beginning of a relationship, and slowly fall into a comfort zone shortly after. Don’t do that! Whatever you did to get her, do the same to keep her. Please understand that a Black woman is not going to settle for just anything.

If she finds that you are becoming stagnant in the

relationship, and with your responsibilities, she isn’t going to put up with it. Make sure you stay on top of your game, and know that she doesn’t have to stay with you and accept just anything.

Natural v. Weave- Does it really matter? If she wants to rock her natural hair, then let her. If she wants to wear weave, then let her, and don’t complain about it. Black women use their hair for self-expression. One thing to make known is if she decides to wear weave, it doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have any hair!

Please get that out of your mind. Furthermore, sometimes Black women just want to give their natural hair a break, or they just want to experiment with different hairstyles. If you’re going to love a Black woman, then love

At the end of his sermon at The Lighthouse Church, Anthony O’Neal noticed a scarcity of men in the audience and asked the hundreds of women in attendance, “Where are all the men, at?” to a scattering of ooohs and aaahs. “They should have been here so they can learn how to take care of y’all. You don’t need a broke man…!” That got the biggest applause of all. “Make sure that you attend next year’s conference and bring y’alls men with you…” That was probably the best advice of all.

Be the man, but don’t take full control- Black women love when their man is in control of their household, but that doesn’t mean take full control.

She needs to have a say so also. You can put your foot down, but it’s okay to pick it up off the ground sometimes too. Let her have some independence within the relationship also. You don’t have to make all of the decisions, and you don’t have to feel as if you, the man, must do everything. Let the woman take some of the load. Trust me, she wants to. A black woman wants to feel needed. Don’t just push her to the side.

Instead, utilize her, and appreciate the fact that she wants to help.

Keep her a priority- There are a lot of things that

occur in the daily lives of men. You may work a lot, have kids that need to be taken care of, or you just may need some time to yourself. Understandable!

However, make sure you keep your black woman a strong priority. Put some time aside that is reserved just for her. Whether it’s dinner, or just staying at the house to watch a movie. Make sure she knows that she is at the top of your list.

Love her like Christ loved the churchEphesians 5:25 states, “Husbands love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Whether you are married, or you’re simply just dating, you should still love her like Christ loved the church.
