Mark Clark & Fred Hampton

Today, marks the 48th anniversary of the deaths of two Black Panther leaders.

On December 4, 1969, Police killed Fred Hampton, 21, and Mark Clark, 22, members of the Black Panther Party. The two men were gunned down by 14 police officers as they lie sleeping in their Chicago, Illinois, apartment.

While authorities claimed the Panthers had opened fire on the police who were there to serve a search warrant for weapons, evidence later emerged that told a very different story: that the FBI, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Chicago police conspired to assassinate Fred Hampton. Noam Chomsky has called Hampton’s killing “the gravest domestic crime of the Nixon administration.”

The Black Panther Party was an African American organization founded to promote civil rights and social justice and was a part of the anti establishment counterculture of the Sixties.

Thurgood Marshall once said,

“None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody – a parent, a teacher, an Ivy League crony or a few nuns – bent down and helped us pick up our boots.”

Racially Biased Parole System Earl Ofari Hutchinson Author & Political Analyst

Meek Mill did more than rouse the anger of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Rap Mogul Jay-Z. Both have loudly spoken out against Mill plopped back in prison for a parole violation. Mill cast the ugly glare back on a part of the criminal justice system that has been too often ignored, overlooked or not even seen. That’s the blatantly racially biased parole system.

The issue is that before he was sent back to prison he was one of millions of black men who were under the iron thumb of the parole system.

The racial disparities between blacks and whites on parole are staggering. Blacks make up more than 40 percent of all parolees in the country. In some states, the percent and number of blacks on parole is far higher. They are more likely to be on parole than whites, stay on parole for a longer time and this is where the Mills case and the plight of other black parolees are a crisis issue. They are far more likely than whites to be plopped back in prison for violations. The violations are often arbitrary, voluminous, and can be petty. The loud message that parole sends is that the parolee is completely under the control of a parole officer or agency, and his every action is being closely watched and monitored.

The upside for defenders of a tight, overbearing parole system is that this is the best way to ensure that ex-felons, especially violent

ex-felons do not commit crimes again and menace society. This part makes sense. What doesn’t is that a huge number of those on parole are not violent offenders, career criminals, or pose a recidivist threat.

They are low level drug offenders or were convicted of petty crimes.

Studies have repeatedly shown that providing these individuals with job training and drug counseling programs are a far more costeffective way to insure they do not repeat their crimes.

Then there is the widespread notion that parolees are sent back to prison because they have committed new crimes. This is not true.

A parolee is more likely to be returned to prison for any number of technical violations of their parole, which could include something as seemingly petty as being late for or missing appointments with the parole officer. In Mill’s case, the violations cited were a dispute with a fan, and a dispute over a motorbike on a street during a music video shoot. The decision to send Mill back was made by a judge. However, in most cases the decision to shuttle a parolee back to prison is made by a supervising parole officer and that decision can be at the whim of the officer.

There’s yet another danger with the parole system. With crime down, and more felons being released back to the streets, the pressure is great to make sure that these felons are even more tightly controlled. Public fears over ex-felons running amok with no one watching the store, is fed by sensationalist headlines of rapes and multiple shootings by violent ex-felons.

Children of the Damn Corn

Evil is always lurking in some of the least expected places, but right here in Dallas on Tuesday night, a man walked into Dollar General Store in Oak Cliff, robbed the store and killed the cashier after she handed over the cash. The cashier did what she was supposed to do. The man had a gun, there was no time to argue or bargain with the perpetrator to trouble his conscience. I would have to say the entire community was disgusted, with many Sisters taking to Facebook saying, “It’s just a matter of time before they find you Boo Boo, so you ought to jus go turn your sorry a&*! In.” Justice came for 27-year old Gabrielle Simmons, two days later, and what we thought was a man from the grainy video camera images shown on television by our local news teams, was a 15-year old boy!!!!

The victim is survived by 6 beautiful children and a fiancee.

The youngest is only 7 months old. Already there is an outpouring of love from the community with everyone wanting to do whatever they can to help the family. We know she would not have been working if she did not need the income, so now we are troubled by knowing the family will impacted to a certain degree, by the loss of income. And what about the killer?

We do not know as of yet whether or not the boy will be charged as an adult or a juvenile, although there have been cases such as these in the past where juveniles have been charged as adults. We are dealing with Death, which is serious enough for him to be charged as an adult. A thousand thoughts run through my mind as I wonder why he picked the Dollar General Store. Why would he shoot the victim after she provided all the money, like he asked for?

owner have increased security at this store? How many times does a store have to be robbed for the store owner to take action and provide armed security? This robbery was not the first. However, for some reason, there is no law stating security has to be beefed up after repeated robberies.

The bottom line is, a lot of our kids do not have any moral values.

Also, there is violence all around us. Robbing and stealing is not something these kids think twice about when they see something they want. When I was coming up, I thought I was stealing a candy bar from the pharmacy my mom had already told me I could not have, until a store clerk put my mom on to the fact that I was a thief.

My mom did nothing, but told me my dad would have a nice talk with me when he got home. Pops was literally in tears and his tears made me afraid of ever wanting to steal anything ever again. And the thought of killing someone, even in self-defense if it ever came down to it, was unfathomable. But I grew up in the 70s and 80s when the Ten Commandments came on television so many times that we lived them. Maybe it was the depiction of the wrath of God in that series that saved many of us.

Let’s do some math though. 27year old cashier, who was earning ~$8/hr., shot to death by a 15-year old for a few hundred dollars, leaving behind 6 children, among them a 7-month old, the killer, more than likely will be sentenced to no less than 25 years.

Killing Blacks or Hating Them, What’s worst?

“Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.” I recently thought on the words of the late Coretta Scott King, in regards to the continual hatred and disrespect that occurs to the African-American race. It causes me to wonder - if the hate-induced mindset of one person or race, leads to the act of killing another person in some way, which one is greater? Is the underlying motive the least important, or the act itself?

For our readers understanding, I think that it is important to understand the meanings of two words in regards to this subject.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, “kill” means to deprive of life: cause the death of; to put an end to; to destroy the vital or essential quality of, or to cause to stop.” The term “hate” by the same reference is defined as, “intense hostility and aversion usually deriving from fear, anger or sense of injury or an extreme dislike or disgust”.

Recently, the Houston Texans were in the market for a quarterback after the injury of Deshaun Watson. It just so happened that the very talented Colin Kaepernick was available for hire, but, was overlooked by the Texans.

Kaepernick initiated a protest before a preseason game last year, by not standing during the singing of the national anthem. Following his gesture, other NFL players joined the protest to raise awareness against the endless racial inequality and police brutality, which African-Americans have continued to endure around the nation.

Reportedly, Coach Bill O’Brien was asked if he was considering signing the free agent. Instead of answering the question, he simply referred to the star quarterback as “a good football player.” However, the true answer was quickly exposed when the Texans signed

Matt McGloin, and then released him. Then proceeded to sign Josh Johnson directly afterwards.

Continuing, Kaepernick has been in the process of filing a collusion case against the NFL. His case hinges on the basis that NFL team owners have colluded to keep him from playing. As far as I’m concerned, he has a pretty good damn case. As a matter of fact if I was his attorney, I would subpoena POTUS, who ignited the flame to his already burning fire anyway.

It appears that owners within the league are heeding the hate-filled advice of the Commander-in-Chief, who gave them their orders, not long ago on national television.

Just to recap, Donald Trump stood before millions in September at a political rally in Alabama and exclaimed the following. “Wouldn’t you love to see one of those NFL owners, when somebody disrespect our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b!&%$ off the field right now. Out. He’s fired! He’s fired!” And it looks like his message was heard, loud and clear!

Therefore, I have to pose another question, which one was more important the hatred exemplified by Donald Trump’s h*e a$$, or the genuine concern of a Black man attempting to bring attention to the justification of the Black Lives Matter movement? Donald Trump is inappropriate on all kinds of levels. In most cases, it’s hard to tell what he really stands for until it comes down to justice and equality for the lives and freedoms of African-Americans.

He has no problem with letting the world know that he still holds the article published in 1963 by The Informer in high regard;

“Congress still debating whether Negroes are individual or property.”

We MUST Understand

All of this really makes me wonder is it worst to kill a Black man or woman; or is it worst to have such an “extreme dislike”, with a fierce ulterior motive that, that HATE can ultimately lead to the act itself in some way?

Because if “destroying the vital or essential quality of” (KILLING) Black football player’s careers’, is the end goal – mission is being accomplished.

It is because AfricanAmerican News&Issues is a publication that thrives off of highlighting current and historical realities affecting our communities that, I cannot sit quietly and not exposed the malicious mindset and true intent of Donald Trump and his bandwagon. He has demonstrated time and time again that he doesn’t have any thought or respect for the African-American life within these United States. As a matter of fact, he has shown that he doesn’t have any regard for any minority group, period. If it doesn’t march to his tune, then he doesn’t want a damn thing to do with it.

We MUST Understand that this is one of the most damaging assets or virtues that a man who occupies the highest seat in the nation that any man can have.

If your leader doesn’t give thought to whether you live or die, it ain’t no way in hell he will ever execute orders that will have anything of value or importance to you or your generations. He has proven that by means of entering into office being hell-bent on trying to destroy many of the advancements that the Obama administration put into place. So again I ask, ‘Killing Blacks or Hating Them, What’s Worst?

PRAIRIE VIEW The Honorable Marian “Elaine” Jones-Jackson can affirmatively attest to this thought, as her journey was paved by “steps” and career choices inspired by influential personalities. Her life’s story evolved from being a genuine of servant of God, to becoming a true servant to the people. This factor has enabled to solidify her as, the First AfricanAmerican female to serve as Justice of the Peace in Waller County.

Marian Elaine Jones-Jackson is a native of Houston. She was born in the 60’s to Rev. Dan, Jr. and the late Bertha Gamble-Jones, in a loving and religious environment. Being raised with several brothers until the birthing of a sister 17-years later, contributed to a tomboy-like personality, during her adolescent period.

Elaine was educated in the Houston Independent School District, where she completed her formal years of education. To some degree, she was frightened at the idea of transitioning from high school to the real world; because she was unsure if she was prepared.

Therefore, she took a year to gather her thoughts in regards to her future. While uncertain of the career path that she would embark on, a compassionate heart and the desire to give back to others motivated

her to advance her studies. Thus, she enrolled at Prairie View A & M University.

Once reaching the campus of Prairie View, she initially had a mind to become a prosecutor. Previously, she had always viewed prosecutors, as a sect of professionals who demonstrated power. Her charitable nature suggested to her that she could really make a difference in the system.

However, due to the outstanding talents she possessed in the field of Mathematics, one of her professors encouraged her to major in Math. As time progressed, she was persuaded by another facilitator to acquire a teacher’s certification.

The older professor explained the benefits of being well-equipped with a secondary option. Elaine shared, “My professor said, ‘when she was growing up, every person of Color needed a backup plan.’”

“Though you may be intelligent, you may not always be able to pursue your original career of intent,” her professor warned. The logic of wisdom resonated well with her, insomuch that she made preparations to secure credentials to become a certified educator.

In 1984, Elaine achieved her degree from Prairie View A &M University. Afterwards, she completed her student teaching in Waller ISD, where she taught Math at the junior high level.

Despite being interviewed for an opportunity to work at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in California, she opted to stay close to home for several reasons. One of which was due to her mother’s deteriorating health condition, coupled with, the newly discovered passion she found in teaching young minds.

Some time after completing her student teaching, she was on campus walking through Anderson Hall, when she encountered a recruiter from Aldine ISD. A brief conversation with the representa-

tive privileged Elaine with an onsite interview, which proved to be successful. After visiting Aldine’s human resource department for an official interview she was sent to Aldine Junior High School.

Instantly, she was offered employment and decided to dedicate five years to the field of education.

From this experience, she began teaching under the administration of Principal Wilbert Johnson.

Principal Johnson became a mentor to her, and one that she describes as a, “father figure” and “wonderful man”. When he was extended the invitation to transfer to MacArthur High School, he asked her to come with him. Originally, she was reluctant to accept, because her 5-year quota had already been fulfilled. Her goals to continue her education in law school were in her sight. She had already prepared for law school, by going to seminars and positioning herself to take the LSAT. Nonetheless, Principal Johnson assured her that both were possible, if she attended school at night. Consequently, she went on to teach at MacArthur High School for twelve-years.

In 1999, Elaine married the

love of her life, former-Mayor Frank Jackson. Mr. Jackson is an affluent leader in the Prairie View community and university. He is a respected author, speaker, community advocate and has served on Prairie View’s City Council, amongst various other roles. He is more readily known for his office of, serving as Mayor of Prairie View for over a decade. Following their union, Elaine relocated to be with her husband. Remaining loyal to her position at Aldine, she commuted for a year. Afterwards, she thought it best to teach in the community of her residence. For the next five-years, she educated students in Waller; until she found herself at a crossroad in her career.

Hence, she completed her final year of teaching in 2006, for a sum of 22-years.

Thereafter, Elaine took some time to focus on publishing four of her husband’s books through the publishing company they engineered, Agyeman Enterprise (African, “saving of a nation”).

In the process, she continued her quest for learning, by frequenting

various seminars. After attending one, she was approached by the Director of Student Teaching on the campus of Prairie View; who offered her an opportunity to supervise the student teachers on-site. She agreed and operated in this capacity for a year.

Not long afterwards, she was in attendance at a Women’s Seminar in Houston. In the midst, was a friend of hers, Municipal Court Judge Morris Overstreet. After inquiring with Judge Overstreet about law school, he asked her if she had ever considered running for public office. At the time, Elaine had only been a resident within the community for ten-years and had no political background experience of her own. While she thought on all of the reasons that she was not the person for the charge, she simply said within herself, “I will just pray about it.’ After doing so, considering her years of volunteering in the community and presenting the idea to a few family members; she was moved to run for public office.

Meet The World Series Champions for California Angels, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, and Diego Padres, and finally retiring as a player in 1992 with the Detroit Tigers.

He got his first coaching job in 1995 with his former team the California Angels as the first base coach. He slowly coached the Chicago White Sox, The New York Mets, and the Texas Rangers before joining the Houston Astros as there third base coach and now he’s a World Champion!

Gary George Pettis

Meet Gary George Pettis born April 3, 1958 in Oakland California. Houston Astros third base coach who played a critical role in the Astros World Championship. If you’re not familiar with him he was the guy who was always twirling his arm in a circle motion every time someone ran to third base he has a very hard job. He must know and have confidence in who is the base runner, he also must know strong the guy ball arm is can he beat my guy to home plate or not. That’s how crucial his calls are, he made three critical calls in the playoffs to send runners to home and those three plays helped the Astros win the game.

Gary Pettis who once played center field for the Angels, Tigers, Padres, and the Rangers. He has 21 home runs in his career, a 236-batting average, 354 stolen bases, 5-time Golden Glove winner which means he was the best defensive player at his position he was a good role player.

Meet Alonzo Powell born Dec 12, 1964 is a former MLB outfielder he made his major-league debut with The Montreal Expos in 1987, he also played for the Seattle Mariners, Chunichi Dragons, Hanshin Tigers. He played his last game on October 6,1991 with the Seattle Mariners, he led the central league in batting average 3 times and he was a two-time central league all-star his first coaching job was with the

Meet Cameron Maybin born April 4,1987 a major-league outfielder with the Houston Astros. Maybin made some key plays in the World Series he ran down a couple of well hit balls that could have been home runs. He also stole some key base to steal the victory in La. Maybin was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2005 he also played for the Florida Marlins, San Diego, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels and now he is a World Champion with the Houston. Even though there are only 63 major league active black player we can we can call Cameron Maybin and Tony Sipp World Champions.

Now is the time to bring baseball back to the black community because dreams can come true. As for the Houston Astros, I commend this team for their hard work of carrying a whole city on their back throughout the storm they stuck together and they became Houston Strong!

PRAIRIE VIEW-- The Prairie View A&M women’s basketball program has signed a senior standout from Waco, Texas, Ta’Naiya Norwood.

Norwood, a 6-1 forward, will be joining the women’s basketball team in the fall of 2018.

The senior from Lavega High, is a long, athletic player with the ability to score. At Lavega, she has led her team to two championships.

“Ta’Naiya has great work ethic, and that’s something we want to continue to build here at Prairie View A&M,” said head women’s basketball coach Ravon Justice. “She does a great job of working hard on the floor and in the classroom, and those are the type of studentathletes that we want to come here. She’s long and athletic, and she’s going to be able to play multiple positions on the floor, especially around the rim with rebounding. This is something we are looking forward to. She has a great personality on and off the floor, she’s very positive and she fits right with our culture with what we are trying to build here.”

As a junior she averaged 18.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. In 92 games since her junior varsity year on the court, she has averaged 11.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.

“Ta’Naiya will be a great asset,” Justice continued. “She knows how to get to the basketball.

She has a good mid-range game, and overall she fits right in with what we are trying to accomplish here. She’s a little similar to La’Sha Haynes, but just not as strong as Sha is. Sha is a senior that has had years of strength and conditioning in college. Ta’Naiya is someone that has that ability and that’s what attracted us to her, because her and Sha have a similar game.”

Texas Southern University and the United States Coast Guard entered into a memorandum of agreement in an official signing ceremony on November 13 in Hannah Hall. The agreement provides the framework that establishes a relationship with the Coast Guard and key faculty and staff members in TSU’s law, aviation, engineering, information technology, and maritime transportation programs. The Coast Guard will establish a mentorship program, attend TSU career fairs, and host leadership and career lectures. Students interested in Coast Guard careers will be able to visit the Coast Guard Air Station Houston.
