COURAGE TO BUCK JIM CROW In 1964, working with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Hamer helped organize the 1964 Freedom Summer African-American voter registration drive in her native Mississippi. At the Democratic National Convention later that year, she was part of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, an integrated group of activists who openly challenged the legality of Mississippi’s all-white, segregated delegation.

She was born Fannie Lou Townsend on October 6, 1917, in Montgomery County, Mississippi. The daughter of sharecroppers, Hamer began working the fields at an early age. Her family struggled financially, and often went hungry.

Married to Perry “Pap” Hamer in 1944, Fannie Lou continued to work hard just to get by. In the summer of 1962, however, she made a life-changing decision to attend a protest meeting.

FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHT TO VOTE She met civil rights activists there who were there to encourage African Americans to register to vote. Hamer became active in helping with the voter registration efforts.

Hamer dedicated her life to the fight for civil rights, working for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

This organization was comprised mostly of African American students who engaged in acts of civil disobedience to fight racial segregation and injustice in the South.

meetings with state representatives, congressional leaders to entertaining new groups and ideas on our college campuses, “it’s gittin, it’s gittin, it’s gittin kinda hectic.”

Free Speech vs Free Speech?

Recently on the campus of Texas Southern University, a group of students protested and loudly disrupted the event and shouted down guest speaker State Representative Briscoe Cain, who is White.

Cain is an attorney is from Harris County and is also a Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives for District 128.

The disturbances and protesting, caused TSU President Dr. Austin Lane to leave a meeting he was having with another a state senator after he received word of the situation at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Dr. Lane went to the site of the disturbance to see State Rep. Briscoe Cain, students and faculty, and then learned that it was an unauthorized Texas Southern University student organization function.

Lane stopped the event. Part of a statement from Lane said.“Texas Southern University welcomes free speech and all viewpoints on campus as part of our collegiate experience...

We welcome the return of any guest speaker for deliberative dialogue on our campus in accordance with university procedures…”

Lane went on to add that the event scheduled at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, ended early because it was not a registered university student organization event. He also stressed that the campus is open and welcoming to all state and elected officials.

Later, Cain responded to the protests in a different manner.

Earlier, Cain put out a statement blaming Black Lives Matter protesters who “came in and bullied the administration into ending” his speech.

“I think the protesters got their way with the administration,” Cain told The Texas Tribune.

Also State Sen. Borris Miles, D-Houston commented on the

incident and said.”The fault is not on Briscoe Cain” for the incident...”Briscoe Cain did nothing wrong.”

Since November, disruptions of officials in public venue have been all too common.

Like in this meeting and other town hall meetings, people get whipped into an uproar and the message is lost because the opposing side never gets a fair opportunity to talk.

The First Amendment does guarantee the right of free speech to every American.

However when Black Lives Matters and others protest groups use their free speech rights and State Representative Cain and other groups make appearances to speak freely and cannot use their rights on a subject or issue, this is not how free speech works.

Why do the two differing views end up intersecting and clashing?

It’s because people don’t understand the meaning of “free speech”.

Both sides are exercising free speech and first amendment rights, but at some point the words and actions of one has to listen and yield before the conflicts with another that allow people to cross the lines and things get out of hand.

The land of the free is full of free thinking ideas that make us superb and outstanding in the areas of science, medicine, philosophy, mathematics and politics.

Freedom of Speech Backbone of Democracy

Much of our greatness as a nation is attributed to our ability to be tolerant and respectful of all ideas and ideals, even if we do not agree with a premise or political persuasion.

I don’t agree with everything I see and hear, but I will not participate in bullying another person who disagrees with me or who I don’t see eye to eye with.

Here’s How The Weinsteins And Cosbys Get Away With It

T

he New York Times was deep on the late freight when it broke the story that big shot movie mogul and Miramax founder Harvey Weinstein had a long history of reportedly sexually harassing, abusing and victimizing countless women.

Weinstein got away with the alleged sexual abuse that reportedly spanned three decades for a good reason in fact, several good reasons. He is super rich, powerful and had tentacles into every nook and cranny of Hollywood film, art and culture. Along the way, he made a lot of careers for a slew of big name actors, actresses, directors, writers and others in the film industry. They owed him, and they owed him a lot. This bought a lot of silence. Silence, yes, because many of them admitted that they had heard the rumors, knew the victims or were victims themselves of Weinstein’s sexual rapacity.

It was again the classic case of see no evil, hear no evil and, especially, report no evil. This was the same pattern with Bill Cosby. His alleged rapes, drugging and victimization went on for decades, and many heard the stories and had first-hand knowledge of his alleged acts. Many of the victims themselves screamed foul. In some cases, they filed police complaints.

This all fell on deaf ears.

The deafest ears of all was the legal system. Wealthy guys like Weinstein and Cosby play the system by spreading lots of cash around and shelling it out in numerous settlements with the alleged victims. The victims agree. The courts agree. Their attorneys agree. The price for this is again silence. The victims are legally bound not to pen their yaps publicly about the alleged sexual abuse. This silence has another dangerous consequence when the allegations of abuse by men such as Weinstein and Cosby eventually become public. Heads will nod furiously in disbelief. The immediate retort is: Why are they bringing this stuff up now? Why did they keep quiet so long if this was happening? This makes the victims and their claims suspect that it’s all made up to ruin reputations, get some cheap publicity and a shake

This was a straw man argument if ever there was one. There is an obvious answer why beyond fear, uncertainty and trauma of the victims that many say nothing.

The Iowa Law Review in March 2014 gave an answer. It found that rape is routinely underreported in dozens of cities. The rape claims were dismissed out of hand with little or no investigation. The result was there were no report, no statistical count and no record of an attack.

The study zeroed in on the prime reason for this, namely disbelief. It’s that disbelief that assures that men such as Cosby and Weinstein are reflexively believed when they scream foul at their accusers. They lambaste them as liars, cheats and gold diggers or ridicule and demean them as sluts.

If things get too hot, they toss out a few dollars in hush money settlements, and the screams are even louder that it was all a shakedown operation in the first place, and the victim is further demonized.

The gross misconception about prosecuting sexual crimes has implanted the dangerous public notion that rape and sexual harassment can be minimized, marginalized or even mocked because the clock has wound down on when the crime could or even should be reported or prosecuted.

It’s not just the warped and tainted blame-the-victim syndrome.

Countless studies of rape victimization have shown that the attacker is not a stereotypical weird, ticking time bomb pervert.

Don’t Let Trump Flip The Script Rev. Al Sharpton President, National Action

This is not about the flag or even the national anthem. It’s about the fact that in 2017 we still live in a country that does not treat all of its citizens equally.

T

oday, I stand by athletes, the NFL, the NBA and others for taking a knee, just as I stood by those who wore hoodies after Trayvon Martin was killed, those who had on “I Can’t Breathe” shirts after Eric Garner was killed, and everyone who chanted “hands up, don’t shoot” after Michael Brown was killed. Taking a knee is a continuation of the movement against racial inequality and police misconduct that too often gets ignored. The president, with his antics and hyperbole, has now made the issue about somehow dissing the American flag, when in fact these athletes are enhancing what it’s supposed to stand for: free speech and the right to protest.

They are the real patriots.

During the Democratic National Convention last year, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg referred to Donald Trump as a “con man.” Each and every one of us should keep this in mind and be cognizant of the fact that Trump is yet again diverting our attention away from the real issues at hand.

People like Colin Kaepernick took a knee to raise awareness about police brutality and misconduct and racial inequality. These challenges have not gone away, and instead of addressing them, the Trump Administration has indicated that it will in fact reverse course on some of the progress made in tackling these problems – progress that required much sacrifice and dedication by so many in order to achieve.

This Department of Justice, with Attorney General Sessions at the helm, has made it crystal clear they will stop police reform and even stop consent decrees that were reached with various police departments around the

country. The DOJ has withdrawn from a Texas case on voting rights, and thus far some of the dangerous and divisive rhetoric we’ve heard from Trump and his administration has been matched by dangerous actions like these. Trump is changing the purpose of these athletes’ protests into something completely different. Don’t let him ignore Garner and other open cases, or the fact that people of color are still being killed by police and stopped, searched, arrested and jailed in disproportionate numbers.

By having us argue about just honoring the flag rather than dealing with the issue of criminal justice reform and inequality, Trump has pivoted once again from some of the disastrous policies of his administration that reinforce the status quo instead of pushing for change. This is not about the flag or even the national anthem. It’s about the fact that in 2017 we still live in a country that does not treat all of its citizens equally and fairly both under the law and in all facets of society. These athletes should be commended for taking a stand and speaking out rather than being vilified and bullied from the person who sits in the Oval Office.

Let us also remember that this is a man who has never said one strong word against Putin but so easily called mothers of NFL players “bi*#@es.”

Some of these mothers struggled greatly in underserved communities, and some were single mothers who did everything to ensure their sons succeeded in life.

Even those mothers in middle class communities still had to deal with racism and racial disparity in various forms but overcame the challenges for their children. To be called “bi*#@es” by the president of the United States is the epitome of an insult. Trump’s statements are not only crass and beneath the position that he holds, but they are also rooted in misogyny.

The athletes are gaining support from people from all across this country and from all walks of life. Trump will likely double, triple and quadruple down on his stance.

It is important that we not allow him to flip the script on us. This was never about a flag.

Attaining simple and basic skills such as: knowing how to wash cars, do construction and janitorial work, cooking and cleaning, amongst other tasks can really carry you a long way in life. After all, it really is not about the amount of money that a person makes, it is the investment and choices that are exemplified, that really determines the value of the dollar.

Now, don’t get me wrong…

I understand that some of this “mis-EDUCATED syndrome” has effects dating back to the days of slavery and oppression amongst Blacks. I understand that there was a time when it was against the law for us to read and write. So I can understand the obsession that some of our people have with it. But the attitude of thinking that degrees will feed you and your family, just because you have them truly is mis-EDUCATION. Because degrees alone will not feed you, you have to learn and know how to make a living for yourself.

Concluding, I have to echo the words of Carter G. Woodson once again. In Chapter Five, of The MisEducation of the Negro, he states that, “so-called education of Negro college graduates leads them to throw away opportunities which they have and to go in quest of those which they do not find.”

This is simply the effects of members from our communities, not understanding what’s really going on. It’s sad to say, but the more mis-EDUCATED, we get the more unemployable we become. So, I really want to serve notice on our faithful and loyal readers in hopes that you will truly understand that, mis-EDUCATION ain’t feed you!

ESPN suspended “SportsCenter” anchor Jemele Hill for 2 weeks -- after she allegedly “violated social media guidelines” by encouraging people upset with Jerry Jones to boycott his sponsors.

Hill was reacting to the Dallas Cowboys owners’ statement that any players who “disrespect the flag” will not play for his team.

“Jemele Hill has been suspended for two weeks for a second violation of our social media guidelines,” ESPN said in a statement.

Simply put, Hill’s public ridicule was meant to send a message making her that example similar to the days when certain plantation-based slaves were beaten or killed in an effort to prevent rebellion and hold others in check.

Hill did absolutely nothing wrong – except being a strong, vocal, activist female Black journalist.

Hill is One of Us

Hill had been in hot water before ... after calling Donald Trump a “White supremacist.”

President Trump, in a tweet of his own, demanded an apology and the White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders termed ESPN “hypocritical” for not punishing Hill and asked the network to hold their “anchors to a fair and consistent standard.”

Reacting to the media coverage

HOUSTON - It was the late television comedian and personality Joan Rivers who made the phrase, “Can We Talk?” a famous slogan, but now her comedic words are not so funny when it comes to African-Americans standing up, using their freedom of speech and talking back to the political leaders and pundits who for years relegated Black thought and opinion to the “back of the bus”.

ESPN’s stand is that Hill crossed the line and openly and figuratively “lashed” her with a 2-week suspension.

“If you strongly reject what Jerry Jones said, the key is his advertisers. Don’t place the burden squarely on the players,” Hill tweeted.

Beginning her career as a general assignment sports writer for the Raleigh News & Observer, she later joined Detroit Free Press. She also served as a columnist for the Orlando Sentinel before being hired

by ESPN as a national columnist.

DALLAS -Our City of Dallas is tied in third place with the City of Phoenix when it comes to the child poverty rate. It has recently been reported that within a year, our percentage of child poverty dropped by 6%, but this still does not make a dent in the problem our city has to face until we find viable solutions to our problem. At a Poverty Forum which was held at Friendship West Baptist Church this past Monday, the head of the church, Pastor Frederick Haynes, was one of the first people to address the audience of community members by saying, “It looks like Dallas is thriving, but in the shadows, there are children living in poverty. I’m looking for facts and figures showing members of the community moving up rather than out. Have our numbers dropped because people haved moved up or moved out?” Honestly, without knowing the facts, it makes it difficult to fully

Harvey Survivors Hotel Get Extension

AUSTIN - Hurricane Harvey survivors who need more time to find housing are getting an extension to stay temporarily in hotels while they look for an alternative place to live.

The Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) program, which pays for short-term hotel stays, has been extended by 14 days. The new checkout date is Oct. 24. Participants eligible to continue in the program will receive a phone call telling them what they need to do to remain at their current hotel or find a new hotel. Applicants must meet certain requirements to remain eligible.

Hurricane Harvey survivors who are not currently in the program but who may be eligible are notified automatically. TSA participants must be registered with FEMA for disaster assistance.

FEMA pays directly for the room and any applicable taxes. Applicants are responsible for all other incidental costs (meals, transportation, etc.).

Hotels may require a credit card for incidental expenses.

A household of four or fewer members is authorized for one hotel room and a household of five or more is authorized additional rooms based on a limit of four people per room. One member of each household 18 years old or older must reside in each room.

TSA-eligible applicants must find and book their own hotel rooms. The list of participating hotels is available at DisasterAssistance.gov under the Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program link or by calling FEMA at 800-321-3362. For 711 or Video Relay Service, call 800-621-3362.

For TTY, call 800-462-7585.

Applicants with disabilities or who have access and functional needs should check with hotels to ensure appropriate accommodations are available. Those with pets must check with the hotel to see if they are accepted. Applicants must show photo identification and adhere to any hotel check-in requirements.

ALDINE ISD - Houston Texans defensive linemen Carlos Watkins, D.J. Reader and former Nimitz High standout Josh Huff pose with Mendel Elementary School students who received backpacks filled with school supplies during an event recently at Greenspoint Elementary School. In a continuing effort to assist those impacted by Hurricane Harvey, Huff, Reader and Watkins teamed up with the Houston Food Bank and a number of companies to provide backpacks and school supplies to Mendel Elementary students who were displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Mendel students now attend Greenspoint Elementary due to damages sustained at Mendel during the storm. The trio handed out 350 backpacks to Mendel and Greenspoint Elementary students filled with pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, markers, crayons and highlighters, all donated by the following companies: Everest Bag, CVS Health, Denik, Mattel, New Era and Verizon Digital Media Services. Huff played collegiately at the University of Oregon and in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is currently a free agent.

MASSA’ Don’t Know What’s Best The hot word on the streets of White America and corporate board rooms is that free speech does not really apply to Black Americans.

Tensions rose again last week between Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and several firefighters after two incidents in which the Houston Professional Firefighters Association said the mayor initiated confrontations, according to news reports.

In one particular incident, a fire inspector was working security at a Rockets game and he allegedly refused to shake Turner’s hand and an exchange of word ensued.

Marty Lancton, president of the Houston Professional Firefighters Association, said members of Turner’s detail took the firefighter’s identification and wrote down his information.

Allegedly, the heated exchange of words included some words that suggested the firefighter could lose bought, sold and used as commerce throughout the South.

Blacks had no real rights because one Black man was not even considered one Black man.

During those dark times, we were considered only as three-fifths of a man and even then we had no unalienable rights afforded to White America.

According to Peña, first responders are in dire need of new and updated trucks and equipment and that is not helping morale or firefighters ability to serve the needs of the public in times of emergency.

First 10 Days as President of National Association Title III Adminstrators, Inc.

SAN ANTONIO - A St. Philip’s College administrator has completed day 10 of his first month as newly elected president of the National Association of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Title III Administrators, Inc.; a nonprofit association responsible for the stewardship and administration of a multimillion dollar annual federal appropriation to HBCUs.

The St. Philip’s College administrator is Dr. Erick Akins. Dr. Akins is both the Title III director at St. Philip’s College and an active corporate leader within the 17-year-old association that maintains a unified voice on behalf of 96 institutions of higher education receiving federal Title III Part B funding. Title III programs are a source of federal financial assistance that establishes or strengthens the physical plants, financial management, academic resources and endowment-building capacity of 96 HBCUs. Akins assumed his new leadership role of president on Oct. 1, a few weeks following the installation of the association’s newly elected executive board members on Sept. 20 in Washington, D.C. Dr. Akins earned his bachelor’s degree in music education (Southern University, 1981), his master of arts degree in urban studies (Trinity University, 1988), and his Ph.D. in human services (Capella University, 2015). Prior to assuming this new responsibility, Akins had successfully given back through four years of service as the Title III association’s parliamentarian, working as an executive committee member with two previous association presidents and serving as chair of the association’s bylaws committee. When the association held its Annual

Title III Technical Assistance Workshop business meeting in Atlanta in June, Akins was voted by his association peers to succeed then-association president Helga Greenfield of Spelman College as association president.

One of the association’s signature business activities is its Annual Title III Technical Assistance Workshop where association members and senior U.S. education officials convene to discuss each administration’s higher education initiatives, funding and upcoming projects geared towards Title III-sponsored programs. Akins conveyed the HBCU community college capacitybuilding experience when St. Philip’s College hosted the association’s 2015 annual technical assistance workshop themed The Changing Landscape of HBCUs: Implications for Title III. In June of 2016 in Arlington, Va., Akins shared exemplary St. Philip’s College best practices during the association’s 2016 technical assistance workshop themed Title III Programs: Building for Sustainability & Long-term Success. Akins’ presentation themed Transitioning to Sustainability - Case Studies shared exemplary best practices on strategic steps that successful institutions can also consider to ensure both continuity of service and sustainability from Title III funded projects, particularly best strategies and methods that have been used to transform projects from Title III funded projects and programs to institutionallyfunded projects and programs.

While Dr. Akins shares that the association’s 2018 Annual Title III Technical Assistance Workshop is forecast to be held in June in Washington, D.C., he also shared that the as-

sociation’s 2018 Semi Annual Title III Technical Assistance Workshop will make its San Antonio debut when members convene March 22-23, and that details on both events will be shared in time at the association’s web page http://www. hbcut3a.org/.

will headline a special concert that will also feature the Huston-Tillotson University Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Gloria Quinlan, on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at 5 p.m.

The anonymous gift was recently contributed to the University to help complete its year-long fundraising campaign to purchase fifteen Steinway Pianos.

“Our music department, led by superior faculty, is known for producing musicians of distinction for careers in a variety of professional fields including performance and music education. These best in class instruments are the perfect complement to the talented and gifted musicians on our campus,” Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette, President and CEO

of Huston-Tillotson University, said.

“Becoming an All-Steinway School demonstrates our full commitment to excellence by providing the finest to our students and faculty. I am very excited about the addition of Steinway Pianos to our music department, as this is another step to being the IDEAL University.”
