Now, one of the game’s greatest defensive players of the ‘70s -- and the winner of two NBA Championship rings – hold the distinction of being the only man in the NBA history to play alongside both NBA greats Bill Russell and Larry Bird.

A native of Baton Rouge, La., and a 1991 inductee into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, Don was born on March 22, 1946.

According to Celticslife.com, he wanted to play football, but his mother urged him to stick to basketball.

That decision led to a stellar experience at the University of Houston where he teamed Elvin Hayes, who also went on to his own NBA greatness.

othing gives the legions of Trump loathers more delight than the photoshopped photos that float around the internet of Trump being marched out of the White House sandwiched between two FBI agents in handcuffs. The superimposed photos are intriguing, entertaining, and funny. But they are just that fake news. What It Will Take To Put The Cuffs On Trump an incriminating finger at Trump. That would be no laughing matter for the White House.

Following the indictments, Trump quickly tweeted that Gates and Manafort were long gone from his campaign. Therefore, any talk of collusion between he, Putin and any other shadowy Russians, to smear, slander and discredit Hillary Clinton is just, well, more fake news. His point is there’s zero proof of collusion.

He’s right. The proof would have to be more than just an ex-Trump campaign official claiming that Trump ordered election tampering or that there is a smoking gun email or document around somewhere that shows Trump’s direct involvement in election tampering by the Russians.

That document is what it will take to prove the legally vague, and ill-defined charge of “collusion.”

Some legal analysts even claim that the alleged “collusion” that many believe Trump engaged in with the Russians has no legal meaning in Mueller’s probe. That it’s not a provable criminal offense. However, one thing that Mueller can do to bring the issue with Trump to a legal head is to subpoena him to talk to his office or, the even more remote possibility, to testify before a federal grand jury. Mueller has been tight-lipped so far on this legal move. If he did demand Trump appear and talk, then the worst that could hap-

ollowing the worst mass murder shooting in American history, where 64 year old Stephen Padlock killed and wounded so many Americans at a Country and Western Music show in Las Vegas, the question must seriously be asked, “what are we going to do about our current gun laws in America?” With the increasing number of gun shootings that are occurring in our nation these days,

pen is that Trump would lie under oath about an email from him, or a meeting that he or a member of his team had with an Russian official, in which there was talk of election manipulation. This would certainly be the legal smoking gun that is required to nail Trump with a criminal charge.

This happening is a huge stretch.

First Trump could try to quash the subpoena by claiming executive privilege or national security concerns.

This would touch off a colossal legal haggle between the White House and Mueller over the validity of the claim with Trump claiming that it was just another politically inspired put-up efforts to harass and demean him. If that didn’t work and he had to testify, he would have a small army of attorneys whispering in his ear what he can say and how he should say it to avoid falling into the legal trap of being nailed

it’s obvious; we have a serious deadly problem. Where do we start on this debacle to stop this deadly cycle? In my mind, we must look at the fact that people can buy as many guns just about everywhere in America that they want to. Actually, the gunman in Las Vegas had enough guns and ammunition to equip a small army unit. There needs to be a limit to how many dangerous weapons one person or group can purchase. Our U.S. Government has to get involved in this troubling dilemma. With the power and popularity in some circles of America the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other gun advocate supporters, the mass purchasing of guns and weapons

for giving false testimony.

Beyond giving false testimony and obstruction, Mueller could go after Trump on a conspiracy charge. To make it stick, he’d have to show that Trump huddled with at least one other person to commit an offense against, or defraud, the U.S. But who is the other person? And what and when did

they meet and what did they say or do that constituted a criminal act? There’s evidence that Trump Jr., Manafort and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, met with the Russians. The question is did they talk about election hanky-panky. If so, did they “collude” with the Russians at those meetings to “defraud” or “subvert” America’s electoral process? This would require a lot more than proving that they met.

Mueller would need some confirming document such as emails or notes

made of the meeting to back up an incriminating charge of conspiracy.

Beyond savaging Mueller and the probe as basically a political expedition, Trump did try to seize the high ground in August when he sent a letter to Mueller rehashing the reasons he fired former FBI Director James Comey. This was the spark that set off the hunt for a charge against Trump.

His reason for the firing boiled down to his alleged dissatisfaction with his handling of the Clinton email investigation and the supposed investigation into the alleged Russia presidential election meddling. There is no evidence of any existence, let alone concealment, destruction or tampering, of a document that would show that Trump ordered or demanded that Comey stand down from investigating him. In fact, Trump has waved around the quip he made to Comey about being pleased that he found supposedly nothing to implicate him in any wrongdoing.

Mueller hit the relatively small fry down the Trump food chain and his hint of more to come doesn’t tell how far up the chain this will go. As long, though, as Mueller probes there will be the possibility of turning up that damaging document or statement from someone con=nected with Trump that does point an incriminating finger at him. This is the only thing that would make the phony pictures of Trump being led away in cuffs a reality.

Gun Law Changes of destruction in America has reached a level that this nation has never seen.

This is not a political or personal matter, this is a common sense matter.

I’m not advocating for people to give up their rights to own guns, it’s an American Constitutional right. What I’m saying is that we’ve got to focus more on who are buying weapons and how many weapons they are buying.

Unless we want to see more of these tragedies, we must address this issue.

Here is where the changes must come. The U.S. Government, “We the People” must go public in a strong way to voice our thoughts on this debacle. Just think if we already had a

law in place that said one person could only own a few guns, it would really help this situation.

That killer in las Vegas legally bought all those guns under his name, although at different places. I’m not saying if we change our U.S. gun laws that will be the end of gun mass killings or other mass murders, what I’m saying is, when we change these current U.S. gun laws we will have taken a giant step in stopping what has become almost a regular evil event in our nation.

Oops! I Mean NFL Players &Owners The Overflow

“Can’t let the inmates run the prison.”

Tell us how you really feel Bob McNair, who is the owner of the Houston Texans, and who made this comment not too long ago. Even though he apologized, the damage has still been done and will remain for some time to come. McNair is responsible for bringing a football team back to Houston back in 2002.

He is also known for many great things that includes charitable work. He has also received numerous awards.

However, a comment such as the one he made could overshadow any good he has done. It makes you question a lot of things.

It just baffles me that he would make such a comment like this with everything that has been going on in the media lately, especially with the recent events surrounding our President. Why would McNair say such a thing? Here’s a lesson in itself.

Take note of other people’s mistakes and don’t repeat them. Unfortunately for McNair, that was not the case.

McNair apologized by stating, “I never meant to offend anyone, and I was not referring to our players. I used a figure of speech that was never intended to be taken literally. I would never characterize our players of our league that way, and I apologize to anyone who was offended by it.” Yes, McNair was speaking figuratively because what he said was a metaphor.

However, it was a metaphor that was meant to be taken literal. How could it have not been?

As an English teacher, I had to break down this offensive metaphor.

The NFL establishment is being compared to a prison, and when we think of a prison, we can think of a place of confinement, a place that is continuously monitored, a place that is secure and filled with people who are locked

in. A prison is controlled by a Warden, which in this case, is McNair. The NFL players were compared to inmates, and inmates make up the prison. They are controlled, placed on lockdown at times, they follow a routine, and don’t really have a say so over what occurs in their life as long as they are a part of “the prison.”

McNair’s comment not only upset the players of the Texans, but players of other NFL teams, players of other professional sports, and the countless fans who faithfully root for the Texans week after week. I heard somewhere that someone mentioned that maybe the owners should not be called owners, but solely chairmen of their organization. I have to agree with this as the word owner has kind of a negative connotation to it. Yes, we have businesses who have owners like restaurants and clubs, and etc., but this comment made by McNair, put ownership into a different perspective.

This comment made the players seem like they are slaves to their own game.

See, McNair was born in 1937 during the times where Blacks were severely oppressed by the color of their skin.

There are many Blacks who play in the NFL and it just makes me think if he could possibly still have somewhat of a mindset from way back when. Just remember that you never know what someone is really thinking and what they are feeling. So, the question is, do you ever truly know a person?

In response to this comment, the Houston Texan players kneeled during the National Anthem to express how they were feeling. Now, I do believe that people should respect the National Anthem, however, it is a powerful statement to make in order to get your point across. When players and teams protested against the National Anthem, many people felt as if they were disrespecting the flag. Little did they know that the protest had nothing to do with the flag. The protest was about injustice, disrespect, racial oppression, and so much more. It seems as if the world can not catch a break from all of this nonsense. Just keep your popcorn ready because sadly, this is not the end.

What Goes Around Comes Around…

Those who know me best know that I do not portray to be some overzealous Bible-quoting Christian. However, that does not mean that I don’t know what the scripture says. One scripture that I have always remembered is Galatians 6:7. It says,

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatever a man ‘soweth, that shall he also reap.”

We MUST Understand, what goes around comes right back on around. To that regard, we have the opportunity to view live and in living color; the measures that Republican leaders imposed on former President Barack Obama being demonstrated back on them. Yes, their Republican President is making them reap, just what they sowed.

Just to recap, many Republicans had an axe to grind with former President Obama before he ever took office. Folks can choose to be naïve of the fact, but the only thing that was wrong with our former President is that he was born a few shades too dark. To conspire against your commander in chief before you have ever given him a chance to produce illuminates that there is something seriously wrong.

Nevertheless, Robert Draper composed a book entitled, “Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the House of Representatives”. In his book he makes mention of a dinner that high-ranking Republican leaders held in the Caucus Room. He informs that they attended a dinner during former President Obama’s inauguration. While there, he shared that they discussed ways to win back political power and put the brakes on the former President’s legislative platform.

He quotes a California Republican, Representative Kevin McCarthy, saying, “If you act like you’re the minority, you’re going to stay in the minority.

We’ve gotta challenge them on every single bill and challenge them on every single campaign.”

Another passage from his book yields the following… “The dinner lasted nearly four hours. They

parted company almost giddily. The Republicans had agreed on a way forward: Go after Geithner. (And indeed Kyl did, the next day: ‘Would you answer my question rather than dancing around it – please?’) Show united and unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies. (Eight days later, Minority Whip Cantor would hold the House Republicans to a unanimous, No against Obama’s economic stimulus plan.) Begin attacking vulnerable Democrats on the airwaves. (The first National Republican Congressional Committee attack ads would run in less than two months.) Win the spear point of the House in 2010. Jab Obama relentlessly in 2011. Win the White House and the Senate in 2012.”

The irony that lies within the conspiring and calculated act that the

Republicans concocted against our former Democratic POTUS; is that they are now faced with their Republican POTUS who is doing the exact same thing to them, with no regard. We see that the GOP is just as confused about what type of major pieces of legislation that their POTUS will sign into law, as the rest of the American people. POTUS shows loyalty to no one, including members of his own party. From monthly, to weekly to nearly daily Republican members are falling away left and right and blaming POTUS for the embarrassment and shame that he has not only brought to the Republican Party, but the office itself. Though there still remain die-hard Republicans who want to portray that their party is still strong and unified as ever, it is evident that this couldn’t be further from the truth.

We MUST Understand

Recollecting back; it wasn’t enough that the first acknowledged Black POTUS was continually disrespected on every level while he was in office. That factor alone was just not good enough. But, nearing a year since former President Barack Obama’s successful and productive completion of two consecutive terms; we find that his name is constantly in the wind and ringing out of the mouth of the current President. So much so that, it has become quite the task for the President to actively focus on leading the nation and fulfilling his role; because he is dead-set on trying to destroy the legacy that President Obama left on record.

The problem is not that the former POTUS was not a good leader or was not one of the most intellectual individuals to ever step foot in that office. The problem is that there was never supposed to be an acknowledged Black man leading this country.

Although there have been other Black presidents, who have occupied the seat; their skin did not actually reflect the color of who they really were.

We must keep in mind that, what goes around comes around. The disregard that was done to the former POTUS is now being done, from the GOP to the current POTUS and from the current POTUS back to the GOP. It is a circle that is continuing and in the process significant things that matter to the American people are going undone. With all of the bickering and debate that’s happening with all of the politicking, tweeting and frenzy of foolishness, POTUS is making former President Obama’s track record much more successful than the one he has been trying to destroy. Honestly, I can only suppose from this point on that it will only grow worse, seeing as how, what goes around comes right back on around.

It has been recently reported that players of the Houston Texans considered walking out in response to insulting comments made by owner, Robert “Bob” McNair. In the wake of the national controversy induced by Donald Trump, ESPN reported on a meeting conducted by the NFL’s owners’, to address protests that players have demonstrated during “The Star Spangled Banner”.

Amidst the gathering, McNair remained true to his Southern heritage by concluding that, “we can’t have the inmates running the prison.” This statement was made, in response to players’ unifying and acting on their right to freedom of speech, as it relates to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Texans Coach O’Brien took a stance of, getting in front of the comments with players the morning that the story was to surface amongst media outlets. Afterwards, some of the players weighed heavily on the motion of performing a walkout. Reportedly O’Brien then held a 90-minute meeting, allowing players the opportunity to speak out their emotions. The coaching staff was able to prevent the intended walkout by talking with players, though some players agree that the issue is far from being resolved.

yielding you, your minds, unity, ability and success, an enlarged territory in continuously drawing attention to the perils that have longed plagued this country. We feel that you are justified in, “Kneeling Your Ground”, in solidarity with the protest movement initiated by Colin Kaepernick.

I have remained an avid supporter of holding our Black leaders accountable, whether it’s in elected office, a pulpit or on a man-made field. So my tone will not change when it comes to encouraging our Black athletic leaders on the field to do the same. I urge you to continue utilizing your gifts to draw attention to the factors that so heavily impact our communities. Always remember that there is power in unity and no matter how others may attempt to minimize or insult your worth; know that it is off of the maximization of your talents that truly determine their worth.

Numerically, you possess more of a financial asset to them, opposed to the benefit that they try to promote to you. According to VICE SPORTS’ Antonio Moore, “70 percent of NFL players are Black men.” That tells the world, that there are more of you, than there are of them. You don’t have to be a Mathematical wizard to know that 70 percent is the overwhelming majority. The “inmate” reference is parallel to the view, that you are just another n$$$a. Some of them feel like, they have bought and paid for you; therefore, they own you. So you have to understand that ain’t nobody going to ever respect you, if you don’t first

# 15 # 90 stand up for yourselves and who you are. It is, “Time-Out” for “considering” and “Time-In”, for actively demonstrating the power that you have as Black leaders in our community.

Lastly, if owners and your superiors are unconcerned about the issues you raise, and refuse to view them as national priority; you should consider a few questions. Just what do you think they would do if you were involved in a case of mistaken identity? Since we all look sooo much alike; what if you were: Dontre Hamilton (Milwaukee), or Trayvon Martin, or Eric Garner (New York), John Crawford, III (Dayton), Michael Brown (Ferguson), Ezell Ford (Florence), Dante Parker (Victorville), Tanisha Anderson (Cleveland), Akai Gurley (Brooklyn), Tamir Rice (Cleveland), Rumain Brisbon (Phoenix), Jerame Reid (Bridgeton), Tony Robinson (Madison), Phillip White (Vineland), Eric Harris (Tulsa), Walter Scott (North Charleston) or Freddie Gray (Baltimore), to state the most? What if you were executed by an official who took it upon himself to be judge and jury of your life? Do you think that the multi-millionaires, who have accomplished their fortunes off of your talents, would really give a damn? I’ll let you be the judge of that one…

ovember is National Diabetes Awareness Month. AfricanAmericans often suffer the complications of diabetes at higher rates than other ethnicities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30.3 million people have diabetes mellitus and 7.2 million people do not know they have diabetes. (www.cdc.gov/diabetes) There are three more common types of diabetes, including Type 1 (often childhood onset where no insulin is produced in the body), Type 2 (teens or

health adult onset), and gestational diabetes (associated with pregnancy). The greatest numbers of people have Type 2 diabetes, when their body cannot process sugar properly due to either insulin resistance or not enough insulin being produced in the body. Here are three main points to remember when it comes to diabetes.

1) Know your risk and accept your risk. If your mother, father, sister or brother has diabetes, you are at high risk for developing diabetes. If your uncle, aunt or cousin has diabetes, you are still at risk for developing diabetes. If no one in your family has diabetes, know the diagnosis is still possible, particularly as you age.

Diabetes Awareness is Your Responsibility tion to share with your doctor. This is powerful information to know, because it can help raise our younger generation properly, teaching them how to prevent diabetes with good eating habits and plenty of exercise.

2)See your doctor and follow the plan. Yes, call the doctor. If you find out that one of your relatives has diabetes, make your appointment right away. There is a level in your blood that doctors can check called a Hemoglobin A1c (3 month blood sugar number), that can give health care professionals an indication of how your body is metabolizing glucose (sugar). Knowing this number and keeping it in a good range (between 6-7 for patients already diagnosed with diabetes) can

help prevent further complications of the disease.

3)Follow the plan. Your doctor will give you information on medication, diet, exercise, and how you can manage diabetes, or reduce your risk of developing diabetes. If y our doctor tells you to exercise and eat a healthy diet, please follow that plan. Often one of the best ways of managing diabetes is to get daily exercise and have a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Take it one step at a time, working closely with your physician to determine the best way to achieve your goals and follow the plan.

know your family the best and you know who has a ‘touch of sugar’ and who needs ‘sugar-free everything’.

Jones Futures Academy senior Marquinn Booker got an up-close and personal perspective on how to communicate and properly administer a blood pressure check under the supervision of nurses and staff from Harris Health System’s Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital participating in the school’s Oct. 18 community health fair.

About 50 patients from the South Park and Sunnyside neighborhood got their blood pressure checked, as well as health assessments and screenings for diabetes, vision, pulse and weight.

Claudia Herrera, RN, program manager, Hemodialysis, LBJ Hospital, and 20 colleagues—nurses, health educators, dietitians and administrators—mentored the student group.

“I got to find out what kind of problems patients are facing with high blood pressure and help them learn how to control it and manage it,” Booker says.

For teacher Dr. Ksheeraja Saravanan, hearing Booker’s experience at the Senior Citizen Day Health Fair is a major reason for the school’s health science program and why activities like the fair are helpful to students deciding on potential careers in healthcare.

“We teach them the theory of taking care of patients in class, and this experience helps them with hands-on learning,” says the first-year instructor at the school and a medical doctor in her native country of India.

Vickie Johnson, pathway coordinator, Jones Futures Academy, says the collaboration with Harris Health began after a conversation with Nicole Streeter, vice president and chief governance officer, Harris Health Board of Trustees, and a meeting with Chris Okezie, associate administrator, LBJ Hospital, during student tour of the hospital.

Okezie and his leadership team visited the school, and the partnership began.

“This is consistent with LBJ Hospital’s strategic vision to partner with our community and be an asset to our neighbors outside of the four walls of the hospital,” Okezie says. “This partnership helps students capture the goals and aspirations of a healthcare profession early in

high school. It’s a perfect collaboration for both of our organizations.”

The result is a mentor and shadowing program that started in October at the hospital. The Houston Independent School District school’s health science practicum class of 20 seniors will follow and observe doctors, nurses and other professions in various areas of the hospital.

“We want to expose them to as many options in healthcare as possible,” Saravanan says. “Some may decide they don’t like to interact with patients directly, but can see a career in a supportive field as a consideration.”

Unit/Hemodialysis Services, LBJ Hospital, says the partnership with Jones Futures Academy also serves as a community outreach program needed by nursing as they embark on a journey to Magnet Recognition®, a prestigious distinction for nursing excellence in the U.S. If all works well, LBJ Hospital could apply for the designation in 2019.

“We’re excited to help others in the community and mentor the next generation of healthcare professionals,” Roberts-Jackson says. “We’ve had an overwhelming response from staff. We had so many offers of helping that we had to turn some away.”

TSU Regent

Gary L. Bledsoe Gary L. Bledsoe, former Texas Southern University regent and renowned Austin trial lawyer has been named acting dean of Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law, effective November 1. In his role, Bledsoe will serve as the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of the law school, until further notice. His responsibilities will include academic and administrative leadership; leading and managing law school operations; advancing a vision for the school’s future; fundraising; and building and sustaining partnerships and strong relationships with alumni of the law school and university. Bledsoe’s appointment follows the recent resignation of Interim Dean Dr. James M. Douglas, who will continue his service to the law school as distinguished professor of law.

Bledsoe is no stranger to Texas Southern University (TSU), having served on the TSU Board of Regents from May 2007 through October 31, 2017. A trial lawyer, specializing in public interest, employment and civil rights law, including having handled voting rights and desegregation and employment discrimination litigation, Bledsoe has been lauded by an array of professional associations for his legal acumen and civil rights efforts.

Additionally, Bledsoe has a longstanding relationship with the NAACP, having served as the president of the Texas NAACP since 1991, on the NAACP National Board of Directors since 2003 and more recently, beginning his tenure of service as housing chair and legal committee vice-chair of the National NAACP. His ties with the NAACP have afforded him opportunity to make notable civil rights changes, including his handling of racial discrimination complaints against the Austin Department of Public Safety that dismantled racial barriers that prevented minorities and women from becoming Texas Rangers. Moreover, his involvement with the Cedar Avenue litigation against the Austin Police Department led to heightened public awareness of the police department’s mishandling of minority youth and led to widespread changes in the TX - 6

Additionally, Bledsoe arranged for an African-American student scholarship program with HEB, providing $25,000 in yearly scholarships for 5 consecutive years, for students attending Texas Southern University, Prairie View A&M University and Huston-Tillotson University. Bledsoe is also a member of American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Board of Directors.

Each and every faculty member has valuable insight that will help us to achieve this and make us the kind of institution we are striving to become.”

Bledsoe earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors and special departmental honors in ‘73, as well as a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he is heralded as permanent class president of Class of ’76. Elected officials and education leaders broke ground Tuesday on Harris County’s first public recovery high school, designed to help students who have completed a rehabilitation program remain sober while continuing their education.

Harris County Department of Education Superintendent James Colbert More than 10,000 drug- and alcohol-related offenses occurred in Harris County’s 25 school districts during the past five years. Research also shows the risk of relapse is higher when students must return to their pretreatment schools. For many adolescents, their prior high school represents the environment of previous use and contact with using friends.

“We really need to get down to the root of the problem and help these children fight their addictions,” said HCDE Superintendent James Colbert. “We’re going to assist kids with sobriety to make them whole again while they continue to achieve their academic goals.”

Tuesday’s event was attended by state Sen. Sylvia Garcia, a representative from Commissioner Jack Cagle’s office, Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg, Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Rodney Watson, Houston ISD trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones, and leaders from Houston’s recovery community.

Several educators from area school districts including Huffman, Goose Creek and Galena Park also attended.

Harris County Department of Education Board President Louis Evans said the event was

historic not just for HCDE, but for Texas’ largest county.

“We are here to mark the beginning of an exciting renovation that will culminate with the opening of Harris County’s first public recovery high school: Fortis Academy,” Evans said.

“Thanks to superintendent James Colbert; our therapeutic partner, Turning Point; and the support of superintendents and recovery advocates across the county, we are poised to make history.”

Fortis Academy, located at 11902 Spears Road in the Greenspoint area, will open in the spring with an initial cohort of 30 students. The school’s principal, Anthony Moten, said the therapeutic component is critical in helping students maintain the sobriety they have achieved in counseling programs prior to enrolling in Fortis.

“My connection to this mission is personal.

I’ve seen, up close and personal, the harm and the impact that drugs and alcohol have on families and adolescents,” said Dr. Moten, whose father owned a nightclub. “I’m committed and prayerful that Fortis Academy will be a life-saving and life-sustaining refuge for the adolescents of Harris County.”

Rebecca Cole

Rebecca Cole is originally from Sealy, Texas, but has lived in Houston for the last four years. She received a Bachelors of Arts from Stephen F. Austin State University majoring in Criminal Justice and minoring in Psychology.

She then received a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Houston. She has worked for Child Protective Services for several years, and through that work is where she received her Master’s degree. Rebecca has worked at Memorial Herman as a Psychiatric Social Worker, and last year she started working with the Crisis Intervention Response Team with the Harris Center, where she rides with law enforcement to answer mental health crisis calls in the community.

The Harris Center, which is one of the only few teams in the United States that has this particular model in place, and it has been replicated by other municipalities within the United States as well. Rebecca expressed, “I am a Clinical Social Worker and there are also Licensed Professional Counselors and we work for the Harris Center, which is the local mental health and IDB authority for Harris County.

We ride with a law enforcement officer who has already met certain criteria to be a crisis intervention officer….if it’s a mental health based call, what we try to do is to go assess the situation, and help reduce those type of persons who get funneled into the jail based on actions that are secondary to their mental health.”

Rebecca and her colleagues are there to try and help individuals who need a psychiatric hospital instead of being taken to jail. They try to get people connected to mental health services in spite of the many reasons why they don’t have access to these service from the beginning. “It’s a collaboration between these two agencies to help with this one particular goal to address mental health in our neighborhoods and our societies,” Rebecca stated.

Stigma, misrepresentation, access, barriers to access, not enough funding, misdiagnosis, not

having insurance to seek treatment, not having the available resources, not having transportation to treatment are just a few reasons why mental illness is not discussed as much as it should be, and why people aren’t receiving the help that they need.

“The stigma that’s associated with mental health within the community just in general… across any socioeconomic population, the stigma of mental health and how it is portrayed in the media…you’re psychotic, you’re a psychopath you’re someone who kills someone, or someone who is not healthy in a very scary and unlikeable way,” expressed Rebecca. She made it known that not every one with a mental illness is looking to murder someone. It can be someone who suffers from anxiety or PTSD, or a bipolar disorder.

Not everything associated with mental illness is extreme, but due to this stigma, it has made many individuals overlook the importance of being mentally well.

The hardest part of her job professionally is encountering stereotypes and stigma that keep people from accessing what they would need to help them live the most least restrictive life. It’s hard for Rebecca to see or learn of someone who needs help, but is not able to access it, or able to reach out to seek what could help change their life. “There are so many things that are out there like social injustices…and trying to find all of these other things to find this one person what everyone should have access to which is health care, freedom and autonomy,” Rebecca stressed.

This is not an easy job, and for Rebecca, she made it known that through her education and work, she has learned how not to get too involved with patients and how not to cross any boundaries. She has learned to debrief and to be self-aware. She also mentioned that she has a strong support system that she surrounds herself with, which is very important. “I have great supervisors and my co-workers are phenomenal too,” expressed Rebecca.

In spite of how hard and challenging her job may be at times, she feels that her job is still very rewarding. Rebecca is very proud of the work that she does as she illustrated, “Every day I get invited into people’s lives and I get to meet them and experience experiences I would never have access to in my life. It takes a lot for people to open up to a total stranger, and to have someone trust me enough to have that type of vulnerability is very special.”
