On October 2, 1927 in Sunnyside, Texas a son was born to Adam Stewart and Ida Belle Knowles-Stewart whom they named Roy Elliott Stewart. He and his brother and two sisters were affectionately raised by their grandparents, Silas and Addie Knowles.

At an early age, he was baptized of the Mount Zion CME Church. He attended Bob Burton High School and graduated in 1947.

Shortly after graduating he joined the Armed Forces and served his country where he was stationed in Korea. Upon returning from his tour of duty, he continued his education at the Southern Business College and Prairie View College.

He married Miss Nettie Mae Lewis and to this union four children were born: Donald, Diane, Sylvia and Roy Jr. This did not prevent him from rearing his four children and continuing his Christian journey.

Sista Girl Curls

By the grace and love of God, Pastor Stewart was given a helpmate to walk with him. Rev. Stewart was joined in holy matrimony on August 4, 1972 to Sister Verna Stewart of Sunnyside, Texas. They have been married for 47 years.

Reverend Stewart accepted the call to pastor Green Meadow Missionary Baptist Church on February 3, 1973. He

Mirron Wills of Crockett, Texas is an accomplished widely acclaimed actor (Independence Day) and other movies and stage performances. He is the son of educator, community leader Dr. Edwardlene Fleeks Willis of Crockett. He had this advice for our youth. “Educate yourself, love yourself, take your life seriously, work and participate in your community, they need you.” Mirron is the owner of Unique Urban Audio, where he does book recordings. Michael Bishop of Willis, Texas is a former star quarterback of Kansas State University and the New England Patriots of the NFL. Bishop, who is still in tremendous physical condition (still playing B-Ball) and has a great personality has this to say. I would tell young people this. “ If they see something in life that they want, they can get it, but they have to know it’s going to take hard work and dedication.” Michael Bishop is also a Willis High graduate and a positive force in Willis.

Dr. Ruth Groves Waston Houston of Houston is a former educator, community leader, activist, political and church worker/ musician. Dr. Ruth gave me this advice for young people. “Put God in front of everything and listen to your parents they have knowledge and wisdom.” Dr. Ruth is the president and editor of the Groves Standard Newspaper.

Lance Slage of Houston is a senior at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, majoring in sociology and human

Lifestyle resources. I asked Lance, who is very intelligent and a member of the Alpha Nu Delta multicultural fraternity, about his advice for other young people. “I would urge every young person to go for their dreams. It would be better to go and fail than not to go at all. In other words, it would be better to go to college and flunk out than not to go, because you can learn from your mistakes.” Slage said Jesus is his number one role model.

Luther King Jr. and Malcom X are also his role models. Slage is a graduate of Houston’s Alief Hasting High School. He plans to attend graduate school at SHSU where his girlfriend also attends.

He is a member of New Life Temple Church of Houston.

Texas City, Texas community and church leader, Johnny Adams, husband of the late Vera Adams, a Crockett, Texas native gave me this advice for young people. “Trust in God”.

Rick “Freeway” Ross, AKA “the Real Rick Ross” of Los Angeles, California, Life’s story has been publicized in movies, books, the internet, documentary films, newspapers and magazines.

I asked Rick, a native of Kilgore, Texas in East Texas what advice did he have for young people.

“Critical thinking is important for young people to have these days.

They have to make sure they are following the right people. They can’t have a ‘go with the herd mentality’ and not go in the right direction,” was his advice.

Rick was the subject of a recent movie on Direct TV also located at Rick Ross Books.com, at Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, Freeway Rick Ross: the Untold Biography on the internet and some of his media outlets.

Houston County Judge Erin Ford is a leader who is concerned about the future of our young people. He had these words of advice.

“We all must have a common goal to take care of the young people and give them every opportunity to succeed in the world. I think young people need to take advantages of the opportunities to get their education and succeed in life.”

Dr. Ianthia Fisher is a longtime educator, community leader, church minister and one of the founders of the Groves Educational Foundation in Crockett. Dr. Fisher and husband Former Crockett Police Chief Jimmy Fisher are the parents of some strongly educated grown children. Dr. Fisher serves as the Managing Editor of the Groves Standard Newspaper. She gave this advice for young people.

cept responsibility and become accountable for their lives. They have to learn that, nothing in life is free, someone has paid the price.”

Jesus even paid the price so that you could have the “free gift of salvation.”

Houston County Attorney Daphne Session is the daughter of the Informer Newspaper founders Walter and Maxine Session of Rusk, Texas. I asked Daphne Session who is doing a great job for the people of Houston County, her advice for young people. The most important thing I could say to young people is “stay in school”.

Evangelist Connie Yarbrough of Nacogdoches had this to say to young people. The young generation is under attack these days.

They need the presence of the Lord. I would advise young people to “be strong, stand on the word of God, don’t live a bad life style and operate in the right way.” Evangelist Yarbrough added, “young people need to know love conquers all and a part from God, you can do nothing.”

Houston singer Eric LaShay, a native of Diboll, Texas gave me this advice for young people.

“Never give up on your dreams, nobody can do it but you.” Eric is the cousin of Crockett singer Sherika “De La Shea” Bolton.

New York city and Atlanta Georgia businessman K-Rock, the owner of “Hustlers Never Sleep” company gave me this advice for young people. “You can’t escape yourself, you have to know yourself, you have to have some control over your life. You must have selfcontrol or you will self-destruct”.

Gun Control, Mental Illness or Terrorism?

It is very saddening what happened in Sutherland Springs, Texas as one man killed many innocent women, men, and children. We all have to die one day, but for people to lose their life over nonsense is just sickening to me. President Trump declared this situation an “act of evil,” Devin Patrick and he stated Kelley that this was a “mental illness issue, and not a gun issue.” I recently wrote an editorial that focused on the topic of mental illness, and how it is very common for people to have a mental illness and not even know it. I also mentioned how this topic is not discussed as heavy as it should be. Gun violence is nothing new, but I have a question, is this a mental illness issue, a gun control issue, or simply an act of terrorism?

We cannot forget the recent mass shooting that occurred in Las Vegas, and many others incidents Stephen Paddock that have come before that shooting. How can we prevent these incidents from occurring, and how many more lives do we have to lose before we do something?

The question that I’ve heard many people ask when discussing this topic is, what can we do?

I want to bring up something that you may not have thought of before. Could these acts of violence also be considered terrorism? I looked up the definition of terrorism and there were two that

“A person, usually a member of a group, who uses or advocates terrorism.”

“A person who terrorizes or frightens others.”

Looking in particular at that second definition, in my opinion, these recent shooting events could be looked upon as an act of terrorism. President Trump, early on in his presidency, spent a lot of time trying to ban certain people from the United States in order to prevent acts of terrorism. I did not agree with his methods, especially when people who have lived here for years were not allowed to enter back into the country. He was so afraid of other cultures creating an act of terrorism, but what happens when these acts are committed by our own people that are born and raised from our own country? Is this still a mental illness issue? Is this still a gun control issue? I don’t think so.

In order for these “acts of evil” to occur, it takes thought and planning. It takes gathering resources to prepare for the task that you are going to get accomplished. It takes a whole thought process. This can not be a mental illness issue.

Let’s be honest. If the shooter of the Las Vegas shooting, and this recent shooter were Muslim, or Pakistani,etc…, would they be considered as having a case of mental illness or is it a gun control issue? I don’t think so.

Criminal for US, Justice for THEM!

was reminded of a thought that I have presented to our readers on many occasions, as I pondered on the recent events that have taken place within our nation in regards to mass shootings.

Watching the reactions of many people, including POTUS expound on the issue; it just a relayed the constant reminder that what is,

“Criminal for US is, Justice for THEM!”

It never ceases to amaze me how the crimes of different races of people are categorized, according to varying birthrights. The level of sympathy and compassion delivered to our White counterparts is exceedingly, far above that, than any other race of people that reside within the melting pot of these United States. In terms of killing: When it is a White person responsible for the crime, somehow, the reasoning is always associated with mental health issues and disease; when a Muslim commits mass killings of Americans, it is considered a terrorist attack; and when Black folks are at fault , well then we are just being Black. Because if we were to accept the myth of this society and how it portrays People of Color; the thought is conveyed that Black folks, inherited a criminalist gene, just by being born into this country.

The racism, bigotry and unjustifiable tactics that Africans in America have underwent since its inception of these United States, is a norm within our current society.

In fact, it is an unspoken and accepted way of life for us. Though things are accepted and expected, it does not constitute that this is the way that life should remain. We Africans living in America, live in a very unbalanced and hypocritical democracy. This is the very reason that African-American News&Issues, has existed and will continue to. As Texas’ widest read and circulated publication, we hold

true to a mission of addressing, current and historical realities affecting our communities. As such, this topic is very befitting for the tone. Because we have witnessed throughout the course of history in this nation, that what is, “Criminal for US, is Justice for Them.”

As it relates to the topic at hand, mental issue is the excuse for it all.

In the most recent mass shooting, twenty-six people were slain when Devin Patrick Kelley, exploded firearm with a semiautomatic rifle into a worship service at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas. I always have to drive the point of our people understanding the personality and character traits of POTUS. This is relevant because, though, some people regard him as a lunatic for his expressions and viewpoints. We MUST Understand that, POTUS represents a broader majority of many, who sit quietly, yet still support his views. Immediately following the aftermath of the Sutherland Springs mass shooting, he did not waste any time faulting mental health at first indication that a White man was the culprit.

In a news conference held in Japan he responded to the incident.

He said, “Mental health is your problem here. This was a very, based on preliminary reports, this was a very deranged individual, a lot of problems over a long period of time. We have a lot of mental health problems in our country, as do other countries.” Though POTUS was swift to justify the cause of mental health issues, he avoids the fact that he has attempted to further disable gun control reform. While on a mission to destroy the legacy of former President Barack Obama’s, one of Trump’s first assignments came by way of repealing an Obama administration rule. He repealed the rule that blocked gun sales to some people with mental health

diagnoses. As a leader, he chose to put his personal motives before the lives of American citizens, simply because he is a racist. That element is equally confirmed with largest plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which fortuned mentallydiseased Americans the opportunity to afford and acquire help for their mental issues which was previously not possible.

According to an article written in, Newsweek by John Haltiwagner, White Men Have Committed More Mass Shootings than Any Other Group. He stated that, “The deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was shocking in scale – but it wasn’t a surprise that it was committed by a White male.” He further referenced data from Mother Jones, who found that; “since 1982, the majority of mass shootings- 54 percent – were committed by White men.” It is a sad realistic norm of this nation that mental health issues only affect our White counterparts, when it comes to committing crimes of extreme magnitude. Truth be told, there are more psychotic African-Americans sitting on death row and imprisoned for crimes, than what could ever be fathomed in the typical American mind. But it is seemingly, an acceptable excuse and justifiable explanation when a White man decides to load up ammunition and go blasting on the largest group of gatherers that he can find.

Being possessed with mental health issues does not bring any comfort or relief to the families of victims affected by these devastating acts of enormous monstrosity. But once again what’s,

by Chairman Kofi Taharka (NBUF-Houston), during a recent insightful interview. Though he prefers the role of “servant”, in contrast to “leader”; his position, stance and selfless sacrifices, have solidified him as a true leader. As authentic leadership is determined by the genuine virtue of, first being a servant.

For decades, Brother Kofi has campaigned and protested as an activist and organizer.

In the face of much opposition and adversity, he has refused to relinquish his cause in the fight for economic justice for People of Color. Leading through Serving

The Man behind the Front:

Bro. Kofi is a native of S.E. Banneker City (Washington, D.C.). Strong values consistent with maintaining Black pride and a responsibility of serving the community were instilled in him, at an early age. Being the product of a very large and community-centered family; enabled him to witness first-hand, pertinent issues relative to the perils that AfricanAmericans throughout the nation faced.

After graduating from Archbishop John Carroll High School with honors and serving as president of his class, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in 1983. From the support and sacrifice of his family, he matriculated at Morehouse College.

There, he was exposed to a wide variety of individuals and organizations, which were active and involved in the Black Power and Civil Rights Movement’s.

Exposure to ideologies such as: Black Nationalism, Pan Africanism, Revolutionary Nationalism and African-centered history/culture, intrigued his curiosity. Since as far back as he could remember, he had retained an interest in the issues that plague individuals of African descent. In 1987, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing, from Morehouse.

In the same year, he initiated a career as a Sales Representative at Kraft General Foods USA division in Houston. During his

stint within the industry, he was promoted several times and was responsible for one of the largest accounts in his region. Though he operated in Corporate America for some years, he never neglected his desire to remain active in the community. Aside from his professional career, he sought out S.H.A.P.E. Community Center, in the early 90’s. In doing so, he

connected with the TA-SETI African Historical Society.

TA-SETI became a study haven for him and a great opportunity for him to learn about himself and those who looked like him.

The society’s weekly meetings were held at Riverside Hospital in Third Ward; there, they would engulf in the study of African and African-American history/culture.

Kofi revealed, that leaders of the group were, “wise and capable”.

He also referred to TA-SETI as being, “a good place for growth

in understanding what I consider, the foundation of my history and culture.”

In being affiliated with TA-SETI, he became aware of the National Black United Front (NBUF)-Houston. The organization’s mission to, “Bring Black people together,” gelled with the personal concept he identified with; thereby, causing him to gravitate towards its function.

NBUF had developed a strong reputation within the community for combating many issues that ailed African-Americans throughout the nation.

From warring against social justice issues; to speaking out against unlawful convictions and imprisonment; to Black people being swarmed by the criminal justice system at alarming rates; NBUF had become the verbal and physical catalyst for the underserved and silent majority, who felt they had no voice.

Leaders, organizers and members alike, would protest at police departments, courthouses, prisons and numerous other institutions at the beckoning call of duty or demand.

In a less publicized aspect of NBUF’s operation, was its significant interest in the study of history and culture. On many occasions, African-centered scholars would come and divulge various topics with the group and they’d study together. Over time, Bro. Kofi’s engagement with the national organization enabled him the opportunity to interact and network with people from different chapters and allied types of groups, internationally. This period of his life proved

to be an educational experience.

He said, “I realized that it’s very important to read, study, and look at documentaries - it is also equally important to engage with elders, as well as have experience.”

As time progressed, Bro. Kofi established and coordinated the Operational Unity Network (OU).

The coalition became a partnership of grassroots organizations, which came together to work jointly on efforts to benefit African and Africans in American communities. Through the initiatives of OU, members of the: NBUF, TA-CETI African Historical Society, Shrine of the Black Madonna, S.H.A.P.E. Community Center, Nation of Islam and the Haitian American Ministries, united and formed an agreement to serve as support systems for each other.

With varying commonalities, each group served as obligators to each other, in terms of hosting events and/or activities.

To date, OU has been instrumental in a number of causes that have been overwhelmingly beneficial in empowering and rendering aid to those from its community. Amongst those was the historic Million Man March, held on October 16, 1995. Aiming to promote a theme of, “Atonement”, Minister Louis Farrakhan organized, “the greatest demonstration in the history of America, of Black love and Black men coming together.” The march previewed over 850,000 Black men standing in unison, in the name of, “repairing and reconciling relationships, both personal and religious.” The strength of OU remained as an integral facet of the great demonstration exemplified on that day as well.

HOUSTON - Recently, we crossed the finish line of a grueling marathon. One that was filled with roadblocks, detours and mountains, but we ran over the finish line together. Those who voted for the Pension Bonds should go out and take another victory lap!

For the first time in decades, Houston is no longer shackled by unsustainable pension debts in the billions of dollars. Now the city can pay its bills on time. Now employees will know their pension benefits are more stable. Now city finances -for all of its functions -- are in much better shape. Now Houston has found a solution while other cities must deal with their own crushing pension debts -- and stave off

bankruptcy.

The cost savings in the most recent city budget is already over $200 million.

This vote protects those savings going forward. The most recent city budget is the first budget in many years to fully fund our pension obligation.

Let me remind you how we got here.

For many years, my predecessors struggled to broker a compromise on the ballooning pension debts.

But that money monster kept biting back.

I am humbled that my legislative experience positioned me to defeat the beast by working with Republicans and Democrats in Austin to come up with this solution.

The measure received 2/3rd support of the Texas House & 2/3rds support of the Texas Senate. I am proud that independents, Democrats and Republicans supported these bonds. I thank so many who

worked to get us to the finish line. Voters. Lawmakers, organizations that spurred their members to vote yes. The Lift Up Houston campaign.

My government relations team. And so many others.

Now we move on to the next financial challenges – the ones delivered by the floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey. But first. I am also overjoyed that voters approved the improvement bonds, too. Like a family that takes out a mortgage to put a roof over their heads, cities borrow money at low interest to pay for some essentials.

Fire trucks, police cars, library roofs that don’t leak due to age, park equipment, and more. With the approval of the bonds, we will be in a better shape to tackle the challenges of recovery and rejuvenation after the flood.

Voters Approve Texas Savings Act

AUSTIN - Recently, Texas voters approved Proposition 7, the Texas Savings Promotion Act (TSPA). The constitutional amendment, authored by Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas), allows banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions to offer “prize-linked savings account” programs where individuals can win prizes, including cash, for making deposits into their own savings accounts.

The enacting legislation was passed by the 85th Texas Legislature and signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott earlier this year. Representative Johnson released the following statement in response to Proposition 7’s approval by the state’s voters: “I am thrilled that voters approved Proposition 7. I’ve been working for years on ways to increase the personal wealth of lower income Texans. The Texas Savings Promotion Act will help ensure every family in Texas has enough personal savings so that they will not need to turn to predatory lenders in times of need,” stated Representative Johnson.

“It’s now up to our financial institutions – banks and credit unions – to offer the types of prize-linked savings accounts authorized by the TSPA, and for our most financially insecure citizens to take advantage of these accounts,” Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas) Johnson added.

He retired is a retired English teacher with the Houston Independent School District, who a “Worthy Laborer of 40 years of Faithful Pastoral Service” July 21, graduated with a B.A. degree from Huston-Tillotson (known as Tillotson College) 2013. A new church sanctuary was completed under his leadership in 1940-1941. Her service to our beloved sorority and all mankind began when she along with other structural phases as he receive visionary inspiration was initiated in 1938.

Many African American women have thrown their perms away and are embracing their natural hair. However, with natural hair, it does require much patience and the right products to ensure that the natural hair is beautiful and healthy.

In order to help people embrace their natural hair, Maggie Sayles, Dahl Gibson, Ellyssa Wilson, and Evon Welch, all cousins, have teamed up to create their business Sista Girl Curls (SGC).

Sista Girl Curls, which launched May 1st, 2015, is a natural hair brand that encourages healthy hair and growth. The concept behind their business is to help people, and give them the confidence and perception that all hair is good hair. They also want to promote that all hair can and will grow with the right amount of attention and healthy practices.

The inspiration behind creating the business comes from their mothers who have been licensed cosmetologists for over thirty years. “They have taught us how to take care of our hair, and we have been able to see so much in our hair.

Due to this, we really want to be able to bless someone else with the knowledge that we have obtained on a bigger scale,” expressed Sayles.

There are many negative stereotypes that surround African American women and their natural hair. These stereotypes can be found in different places of employment, schools, and even in the media where African American women have to coexist with people who are different than them, and who may not want to take the time to understand natural

hair. According to SGC, one of the main stereotypes is that natural hair is viewed as socially unacceptable by those who are not knowledgeable about natural hair.

These stereotypes has caused many African American women to feel afraid or even ashamed to wear their natural hair.

Wilson “ stated, “Often times, if “ “naturals” have a certain hair type, they change their hairstyles on a weekly basis, or like to experiment with a variety of styles. It creates a “how” or “why” factor for others who observe those changes.” One of the main goals at SGC is to educate all people about natural hair and all of

its many elements to help create a more mainstream and conventional regard for women who decide to wear their natural manes.

SGC currently offers their amazing Essential Oil, which has been instrumental in each of their natural hair journeys. In addition, they have a few exciting additions that are in the works and will be coming to their line in the near future. SGC Essential Oil is far from other products, as this is a product that was not originally made for sale. Each of them used a variation of the oil for years and saw remarkable results in health and growth. “After seeing major growth following Ellyssa’s big chop, we decided to use that same oil recipe and make the product available to our followers. Career and Technical Education Expo

The youngsters learned about CTE programs the District offers that will help them plot their career path. Gearing up for the next school year, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department recently hosted a CTE Expo at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center to show students what the District has to offer.

Several technical clubs and classes from across the District had booths and demonstrations for middle school students. The Expo showcased the District’s CTE class options to encourage enrollment for the following school year. Everything from cooking to nursing was up for display providing information to students about their topics. Gearing up for the next school year, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department recently hosted a CTE Expo at the M.O. Classes like automotive, animation, welding and robotics were some of the student favorite booths at the expo. Some of the programs offer real-time job experience. Classes and clubs like FCCLA, DECA, JROTC and many others also held booths and demonstrations for students.

“A lot of the programs are gearing students toward certification,” said Franklin Higgins, director CTE. “If they get fully certified, they’re on top of the list of potential hires for businesses.”

Eighth graders combed the expo searching for that program that sparked their interest.

The annual expo, Higgins added, showcases what the schools have to offer students aside from traditional classes and activities.

“We hope the students gain a lot of knowledge,” said Higgins. “The expo can lead toward classes students want to take and help them discover the kind of career they want.”

According to Higgins, CTE can be an integral part of every student’s education so they can graduate from high school globally competitive for work as well as prepare them for post-secondary education.

Choice Partners Annual Nutrition Expo

Choice Partners, Harris County Department of Education’s purchasing cooperative, hosted its annual School Nutrition Expo on Wednesday at Humble Civic Center. The event featured more than 130 food and equipment vendors, making it the largest in the program's history.

"We're proud to see this event growing so that we can continue to give students and nutrition directors broader choices that meet all guidelines and taste great," said Trisha Jensen, assistant director, HCDE Choice Partners.

More than 230 students from area school districts showed up to taste-test foods, letting school district nutrition directors know selections they preferred for the school cafeteria menu. Students came from Katy, Spring Branch, ColumbiaBrazoria, Galena Park, Crosby and Cleveland.

"I come every year to find out about new products," said Gail Stotler, nutrition director, Fort Bend ISD. Stotler added that this year she sampled some new chicken products that "look

very good."

D'gusto Foods sent a representative for the second year in a row, this time to debut its new line of empanadas in corn dough. Oscar Velsasquez, CEO, D'gusto Food said: "I came to introduce a new product: the empanadas, which come in beef, chicken and veggie.”

New products on display also included the “Selfie Pizza” from Alpha Foods, a locally-owned company based in Waller, Texas. Tasty Brands, a supplier of great-tasting school food that meets USDA regulations, also showcased its new mini ravioli dish.

As school nutrition directors evaluated quality, nutritional value and student tastes, Choice Partners gathered info needed to plan for future food contract purchases for school districts. Food is purchased annually by school districts in the Harris County area for more than 100 million student lunches through contracts available through HCDE Choice Partners cooperative.

HISD Innovation Grant Program Teachers and Schools can apply for grants up to $20,000

The HISD Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit that supports districtwide and school-based programs and initiatives at HISD, is launching an Innovation Grant program to provide funds for teachers and schools to purchase equipment, supplies, and other items to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom.

Thanks to the generous donations from local community members and business partnerships, the Foundation will award $150,000 in Innovation Grants for the 2017-2018 school year.

The new program will allow teachers in grades Pre-K through 12 to apply for a $3,000 - $7,000 grant. Two or more teachers from the same school can also apply for a Teacher Collaborative Grant ranging from $5,000 - $10,000.

In addition, individual schools can apply for a $10,000 - $20,000 grant to innovate learning in their classrooms and two or more

schools in the same feeder pattern can apply for a School Feeder Grant of $10,000 - $20,000.

“We are so grateful for the generous donations from our Houston community and corporate partners, who see the value of public education and understand the importance of ensuring our students have dynamic learning experiences that prepare them for success in college and beyond,” said HISD Chief Development Officer Ann Scott. “I can’t wait to see the novel concepts and strategies submitted by our schools and teachers, and ultimately the innovative projects and activities exposed to HISD students.”

Teacher and school applications will be awarded based on their alignment to district initiatives and impact on student success. Applicants are encouraged to avoid the use of school names or other identifying elements in their application so the selection process can remain anonymous.

Barry Ward, II – Founder, Incentive

HOUSTON - Barry Ward, II was birthed into a loving and well-educated family. He was reared along with his two sisters in Acres Homes’ by his mother. With his father being an engineer and his mother, a college professor at Prairie View A & M University for nearly four decades; the value of education was instilled in him at an early age.

After graduating high school, he matriculated at Prairie View A & M University to pursue his life-long dream of becoming a veterinarian. However, the induction into fatherhood caused him to re-strategize his goals. As such, he returned home and secured employment at Citibank. Though his job performance exceeded expectations, he found that he was unhappy in his role there. Therefore, he was encouraged to start working in the Aldine Independent School District, as a substitute teacher.

Upon becoming a substitute teacher, Ward recognized the undeniable gift of teaching that he possessed. Growing up,

his mother noticed the attribute and would always tell him that he would be a teacher.

However, he was still amazed of the ability that was dormant within him for so many years; because he had never given it the opportunity to manifest. Nevertheless, he immediately took his certification and professional pedagogy test to become a teacher.

After doing so, he promptly began instructing in the classroom.

His first year of teaching began in the middle of the school year. He served as replacement for a teacher who passed away.

Through the unfortunate loss, Ward was able to connect with the students and complete a successful term with them. The tenacity and enthusiasm he brought to the classroom soon became apparent. As a result, he was awarded with various accolades during his primary years of teaching. On several occasions he received, “Teacher of the Year” and “Teacher Goes Above and Beyond,” along with other awards.

While performing administrative duties, during his third year of teaching; his superior asked if he had ever considered getting a Master’s in Administration. At the time, Ward being very passionate about his profession, only wanted to be a good teacher.

However, his boss encouraged him in such a way, that it inspired him to do so. After earning his Master’s degree, he began his first administrative position in a neighboring district of Aldine. Following, he received a promotion to become the Assistant Principal at the high school level. It wasn’t long before Ward’s efforts were being discussed in regards to the positive impact he was making in the community.

Accordingly, he received a call to become Principal of the Brazos School in Acres Home. Under his leadership, the school increased its enrollment and accomplished a number of other advancements.

Throughout his three-year stint at the school, his reputation continued to precede him. As a result, he was contacted by another charter district which recruited him as their Assistant Superintendent. During the same time, however, his mother took ill. He considered both of his sisters, one who was completing her studies at Pharmacy school, and the other who was out of state at the time. Therefore, he made the decision to place his profession on hold and see to the health of his mother.

After taking into account his experience as a teacher and administrator, Ward could not deny his passion to continue operating as an influential role model in the life of students. Thus, he established a non-profit organization, Incentive. Incentive is a behavioral and attendance-based reward program for students. Although the organization is still in its inception phases, Ward had been laying groundwork for the program for over two-years. Presently, the program has seen much success with its participants.

Leaders of the organization recruit children from local schools and reward students with positive incentives for maintaining good behavior and being present in school daily.

They have started with a group of 25-pilot students and have been in the process of celebrating every effort of each student enrolled in the program. Students are paired with five

Barry Ward- Founder, Incentive mentors, who donate $40 per calendar school year. Upon graduating, the funds accumulate into a $2300 scholarship; in the process, participants are able to see the funds as they mature.

At the present, middle and high school girls are a part of the organization. The extra incentive for students is the comfort of knowing that the program is not guided by an, academic-based reward system. Students are provided with a wish-list and mentors are available to donate to these lists. This asset is also another incentive to help students remain motivated about their behavior and attendance at school. Incentive mentors never meet the children but dialogue with them through chat and have access to their profiles.

It is a safe and productive way to keep students excited about their education.

As an educator, Ward realizes the difficulty that exists for teachers and school officials when students lack a strong support and encouragement system in the home. He explained, “Schools are impacted financialwise and the overall morale is low when kids aren’t engaged.” Furthermore, he also serves as an adjunct college professor at Lone Star Community College System. He teaches several courses a school year. In them, he educates classes which help to decrease the drop-out rate in the school’s enrollment.

While operating in this capacity he has had the opportunity to see AISD from a different perspective. Previously, he was accustomed to students at the elementary, middle and high school level.
