omeowners want their homes to resonate with the natural setting. An expansive wall of windows facing a spectacular view integrates the residence with its surroundings. But these open windows can mean extreme sun exposure raising the room temperatures to what some homeowners describe as unbearable. There are films on the market that have a nonexistent appearance offering high heat rejection and clarity while preserving the view. These advanced window films help block UV rays and infrared heat at the source while allowing natural light in, leaving the view virtually unchanged and enhanced. Window shades cost four times more than window films and block that incredible view. Films also protect from pre-mature fading. By blocking 99.9% of the UV rays, furnishings, fabrics and wood are protected from the harmful effects of the sun. And according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, window film is one of several recommended safeguards against UV damage for your skin.

14

Window films offer enhanced comfort and protection. They can reject anywhere from 20-84% of the incoming heat keeping the interior considerably cooler, reducing the load on cooling systems, thereby saving energy. Glare from the intense sun is also greatly reduced, sometimes eliminated. NU-VUE Window Films is an authorized 3M Prestige dealer. The 3M Prestige line of films uses non-metallized, multi-layer, optical film and nano-technology to reject up to 97% of the sun’s infrared light, up to 60% of incoming heat. Being nonmetallic, the Prestige Series Films aren’t susceptible to corrosion in coastal environments and will not interfere with electronic device signals. Setting the Prestige Series films apart is the precision with which light waves are controlled as they pass through or reflect off hundreds of layers of film. Compared to other films, the Prestige Series increases their performance at a faster rate as the sun’s angle increases. That means greater protection and comfort when you need it the most. When the sun is working its hardest so is 3Ms Prestige series.

SAN DIEGO LIVING • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

Films that reject heat tend to have high reflectivity. Not with the 3M Prestige Series. These films are optically clear and can offer reflectivity that, in some cases, is lower than glass. That means the same visual clarity inside and out, day and night. The film isn’t noticeable, and it’s doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The house is more comfortable, your interiors are protected, glare is reduced with no maintenance. Most residential films carry a lifetime warranty by the manufacturer and are covered under the HERO and YGRENE programs. Call today for your free in home consultation to see how window films can help improve your home. The professionals at NU-VUE Window Films have been improving San Diego’s windows for almost 30 years. THE 3 MOST COMMON MATTRESS SHOPPING MISTAKES And How To Avoid Them

attress shopping isn’t the most fun and easy thing to do. It also doesn’t help when you have mattress companies capitalizing on consumer’s lack of knowledge when it comes to mattress shopping. To help with the shopping process, there are 3 common mattress shopping mistakes and how to avoid them. 1. Buying a Mattress that is Too Firm. One of the biggest mistakes people make when purchasing a new mattress is believing the myth that firmer is better. People convince themselves in getting a firm mattress because they think it’s better for them, when in reality they should have trusted what their body was telling them and go with one that felt better, even though it was a little softer. Getting a mattress that is too firm can cause painful pressure points on the hips and shoulders causing you to toss and turn to get comfortable or even cutting off your circulation. Another problem with buying a mattress that is too firm is that it is not conforming to your curves properly. If a mattress does not contour to your body, then the muscles around your spine will be forced to overcompensate for the lack of support thus you may end up with back pain. 2. Buying Based On Name Brand. Unfortunately in the mattress industry you don’t get what you pay for and purchasing a big name brand is the epitome of this being true. About 60%70% of the market is owned by two very large companies. Not mentioning names, but for example, “big S” companies (with one T). These companies really drive the direction of the industry and

16

SAN DIEGO LIVING • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

over the years the quality of their products slowly decline. The mattresses may feel very comfortable and look very nice but it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Also keep in mind with the brand name comes insane markups because of high overhead cost. Instead of focusing on brand, focus on craftsmanship and the materials that go into making the mattress. 3. Buying Without Testing. Did you know people spend about a third of their life in their beds? That is a lot of use their mattress gets. With a product that is used every day and is very important to your health, it should not be purchased blindly. A mattress is the most important piece of furniture in the home and time should be invested trying out different mattresses. You want to find the one that fits your needs. There is no “one size fits all” mattress. To avoid this mistake spend at least 10-15 minutes on the two you like the most and compare them. Spending 1015 minutes testing a mattress gives you a good amount of time for your body to adjust to the surface. If you have time to lay longer then go for it- the more time, the better. For more information on selecting a mattress for your individual needs, you can visit Mattress Makers at 7919 Silverton Ave., suite 412, Miramar or 8366 La Mesa Blvd., La Mesa. Building Mattresses since 1968, they use 100% natural and organic latex with a 20 year limited warranty. Discover the Beauty of Reclaimed Wood

INSIDE AND OUTSIDE YOUR HOME

A

lthough reclaimed wood is becoming increasingly popular in creating custom pieces of furniture or other elements to the home, it is in no way just a “trend”. Because of it’s beauty and sustainability, reclaimed wood is here to stay. Old buildings, bridges, barns and docks are just some of the many places reclaimed wood is sourced from. Once discovered, the wood is cleaned and processed into something new and useful. Recycled timber is unmatched in quality, since much of it comes from trees with a hundred or more years of growth, the wood is significantly more mature than what you will find in today’s market. Due to years of subtle expansion and contraction, it is extremely strong and durable. The natural imperfections left from the timber’s previous life are what make reclaimed wood unique and special, creating a conversation piece because of it’s character and history. It is the perfect choice to bring a rustic style into your home while still keeping that high-end feel. Reclaimed wood is perfect to incorporate into furniture, flooring, beams, doors and many other interior uses. With it’s tight grain patterns, density, natural patina and re-sawn marks, the variety and selection is limitless. The interior of the home is not the only place that reclaimed wood can enhance your home. Siding, gates and outdoor furniture made of reclaimed wood can complement your outdoor environment as well. Imagine entertaining your friends and family around a custom fire pit dining table. Not only can this table be made from reclaimed wood, it can also be made from concrete or metal. This custom-made piece can be created in any shape or design at a dining height, unlike other patio

18

SAN DIEGO LIVING • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

furniture that comes in counter or bar height. A fire pit dining table can become the focal point to any backyard space to enjoy dinners, drinks and conversation amongst the warmth of a fire. Because reclaimed wood is not only beautiful, working with it helps protect natural resources. Many wood varieties are almost extinct so this earth-friendly alternative will help reduce deforestation and keep wood out of landfills. For more information on the many possibilities to beautify your home with reclaimed wood, you can contact Reclaimed Wood of San Diego at 619-269-3036 or visit their showroom at 3584 Hancock Street in San Diego. BUYING VINTAGE WINE Who Can You Trust?

I

f you have ever bought a bottle of vintage wine from a retailer, you may have wondered whether the bottle you are buying is going to be great or going to be vinegar. Like many people, it may not be the number one thing they are thinking of at the time of purchase but it’s always in the back their mind. Finding a reliable retailer who stands behind their product, keeps their prices at the low end of the market and provides a great customer experience is extremely important and not as easy to find as you may think. Most retailers purchase aged bottles from private collectors who, for the most part, take great care of their wine. Some collect for the thrill of getting a prized bottle,

20

SAN DIEGO LIVING • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

some do it just for the sake of collecting, but almost all see it as some sort of investment they need to protect. Proper storage conditions are extremely important. If any wine is kept at the right temperature throughout its life, you are almost guaranteed a great experience when you go to pop that cork. On the flip side, are collectors who may have perfect storage conditions now, but when they first started could have kept their wine in a closet or somewhere else where conditions weren’t optimal. The trick for most retailers is to decipher all the information given to them by the person they are buying from and make an accurate determination to trust whether all the bottles in the collection are up to snuff. After all it's you, the end buyer, they are buying for. A diligent wine merchant will spend a lot of time with each collector and ask a lot of questions. Sampling a cross section of wine from each cellar to determine whether the wines are what they should be before buying will give an overall impression of the cellar as a whole and one of the most important parts of the buying process. If the first few bottles aren’t good it’s best just to walk away Price is another important factor when making a vintage wine purchase and can vary greatly on the same bottle between retailers. Having a shop that can provide you with a well stored bottle is one thing but getting the wine at the right price is just as important. Finewinecollector.com is a San Diego based online retailer who specializes in vintage wine, has the lowest prices in the country and stands behind every bottle they sell with an emphasis on fine customer service. If you’d like to give them a try simply contact the owner, Jim Shaw via email at Jim@finewinecollecor.com , by phone at 619-231-WINE (9463) or simply visit his site at www.finewinecollector.com and check out his current stock. WHY RUGS LEAVE THE HOME TO BE CLEANED By: Lisa Wagner (NIRC Certified Rug Specialist and author of www.RugChick.com)

Gabbeh wool rug BEFORE proper washing

M

any things cause damage to rugs: floods, fires, pets, and moths. But nothing ruins more rugs annually than wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies. The chemistry, temperature, and techniques for steam cleaning installed synthetic wall-to-wall carpet are the polar opposite of how natural fiber rugs are supposed to be handled. Synthetic carpet is steam cleaned; natural fiber rugs are cold water washed. Most rugs are made of wool and cotton fibers, and should be treated more as fabric than as carpeting. They are to be washed and soaked to gently and thoroughly remove the contaminants, and someone who is skilled with rug fibers, rug dyes, and weaving types from around the world must do this. Here are the biggest reasons why rugs are never to be cleaned in the home. 1.) Dusting Can’t Be Done. Rugs can hold pounds of soil in them before they begin to look dirty. Most wool rugs release between two-and-ten pounds of embedded soil in the dusting process before the wash begins. This absolutely cannot be done in the home, so cleaners who steam clean rugs create an impacted layer of mud in the foundation of these rugs, which leads to a permanent graying of the wool and eventually dry rot in the foundation fibers. 2.) Heat Damages Natural Fibers and Dyes.

24

SAN DIEGO LIVING • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

Gabbeh wool rug AFTER proper washing

High heat on natural fibers makes the dyes bleed and breaks wool fibers. You would never wash your wool clothing in hot water and dry it in high heat unless you wanted to ruin it. 3.) Tool Scarring. The metal tools that are safe to use on synthetic plastic fibers are not safe on wool, silk, and cotton rugs. Edges on vacuum tools, and rakes and brushes, can cause permanent pile damage and scarring on rugs. 4.) Heavy Chemical Residue. Fearful of getting the floor under the rug wet, those who clean rugs in the home are not able to rinse out all of the chemicals they put in, and the sticky residue left behind causes damage to the fibers and the dyes. 5.) Mildew and Odors. You cannot run dehumidifiers and high velocity fans in a home. Therefore, most rugs stay damp for too much time, which can lead to musty odors and mildew. 6.) Dirty Fringe. Fringe cannot be cleaned in the home, and usually it’s the fringe that looks the filthiest to begin with. These tassels need to be soaked to get the grime to release. Woven rugs will last several lifetimes if properly cared for. Protect your textile investments by sending them out for a proper wash. Lisa Wagner is a NIRC Certified Rug Specialist and international rug care trainer. Her family company, Blatchford’s Rug Cleaning & Repair, is located at 7848-G Silverton Ave., San Diego 92126. DON'T LET THE PIPES IN YOUR HOME CAUSE THIS

I

t’s any homeowners nightmare – you are at work or away for the weekend only to come home and find your home is flooded with water! This unfortunately is becoming a very common problem to many homeowners due to old, corroded or clogged pipes which causes a burst pipe or slab leak. The vast majority of the nation’s water pipes were installed after World War II and are in serious need of replacement or repair. In-home plumbing issues such as pipe clogs, leaks and breaks are surprisingly common, and the numbers are becoming more common as America’s pipes age. Repairs to this costly problem is often not covered by homeowners insurance, you could end up paying hundreds to thousands of dollars to fix them. Because the average homeowner is unaware of the most common causes of water problems outside and inside their homes, there are some concerns every homeowner should be aware of. How old are your pipes? Do you have mature trees near your water service lines? Have you been ignoring warning signs such as water spots in the foundation or discoloration on the drywall or baseboards that are warping or bubbling? Has your water bill increased for no apparent reason? These are just a few of the warning signs to look for.

26

SAN DIEGO LIVING • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

But for some, hidden factors that go on such as corrosion, damaged pipe joints and natural elements can be the cause of the problem. Hiring a professional plumbing company who can regularly do a general maintenance by cleaning the main line, inspection on toilets, sinks, water heater and garbage disposals for any potential problems and repair them professionally can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. It is not a matter of if, it is when this problem will happen. For more information or to schedule an evaluation of your property’s plumbing, you can call CVB Plumbing at 866-282-7422 or visit their website at cvbplumbing.com. Life Happens…Are You and Your Belongings Properly Insured?

et’s face it, most people do not think about the “what-ifs” in life, or may think “That won’t ever happen to me”. The fact is, tragedy can happen to anyone at any time, whether it be your car, personal belongings, home or the well-being of your life. Even though you can’t predict the future, it doesn’t mean you can’t be prepared for the unexpected. You can protect yourself, your family and the things that matter most to you. Consulting with the right company who can offer a variety of coverages such as auto, life and homeowners insurance, not just for your standard track homes but also your luxury estates, can help make certain you are properly insured. Especially here in California, which is very prone to fires, most homeowners are under insured and may not even realize it.

28

PREVENT ELECTRICAL DANGERS

F

Before It Is Too Late

Fixed wiring is the second-leading cause of electrical-related house fires (lamps, light fixtures and light bulbs are first). Since nearly all wiring hazards in theory are preventable, the fact is homeowners can’t see most of their home’s wiring means which is why many electrical hazards aren’t discovered until it is too late. However, often there are warning signs of potential dangers, and knowing the most common signs is an important safety lesson for any homeowner. Beyond knowing these, a professional electrical inspection is the best way to discover hidden wiring hazards in the home. Know How Old Your Home Is. Older homes were not built to handle the electrical load for today’s contemporary lives. Knowing whether your home’s electrical system has been updated to safely handle all the electrical current your family uses is imperative. Frequent Circuit Trips. If a breaker trips fairly often, there is a good chance it is overloaded (the power demand on the circuit exceeds its safe capacity), or there could be a short or fault somewhere in the wiring run or on any devices connected to the circuit. Dimming or Flickering Lights. This can be an indication of a circuit overload or improper wiring. Flickering lights can result from damaged fixture wiring. In older homes with 60-amp service panels, underpowered fixtures and

ONLINE AT SANDIEGOLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

appliances may indicate that the household system is being overtaxed and should be upgraded. Buzzing or Charred Outlets and Switches. Outlets (receptacles) and switches are never supposed to buzz. These are clear warning signs, often indicating a faulty device, loose wiring inside the box or arching between the wire conductors and the device, box or cover plate. Feel Your Outlets. Outlets and switches and their faces should never be warm or hot to the touch. Warm or hot outlets could mean one of several dangerous situations is brewing: an electrical load on the circuit is too high, the wiring is melting, not up to code or is loose. Inspection is the best defense when it comes to protecting your home. For a free 5 point inspection (Gfci, breakers, smoke detectors, lights and general outlets), you can call the professionals at Ochoa Electric at 619-575-5518 or visit their website at www.ochoaelectricsandiego.com.

homeproducts/services DRYER FIRES ARE THE #1 HOUSEHOLD DISASTER

Learn How to Prevent Dryer Fires, Save Time and Reduce Your Utility Bill

M

ost homeowners are completely unaware that if unmaintained, a clothes dryer can pose a serious threat to their home and family. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, these seemingly harmless appliances cause an estimated 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and $100,000,000 in damages every year. When you learn how dryer fires happen you will understand how crucial regular dryer maintenance is to your safety. The reason most dryer fires happen is lint. Contrary to popular belief, your lint trap doesn’t catch everything, and this highly combustible material builds up inside your dryer with every load. A tiny spark is the only catalyst this hazard needs to become a full on disaster. The good news is that disaster is easily avoidable. Professional appliance technicians recommend having the inside of your dryer cleaned every three years. Most homeowners are shocked to see the amount of lint that is vacuumed out of their appliance and can instantly recognize the value of this service. A properly functioning dryer should only take 30 to 45 minutes to dry a load of clothes. If your appliance is running slower, this is a telltale sign of dirty dryer vent.

30

SAN DIEGO LIVING • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

Clogged vents prevent heat from escaping the machine, and keep moisture trapped inside your dryer. This means that an unmaintained dryer is not just dangerous; it is also wasting your time and raising your utility bill! Once cleaned, you will notice an instant improvement in drying time and begin saving money right away. If you are past due for a dryer vent cleaning there is no reason to procrastinate any longer, especially with the numerous benefits this service offers. Is it Time to

RENOVATE OR REMODEL YOUR POOL?

W

hether you are just moving into a new home or have lived there for 20 years, the backyard pool eventually needs some TLC. The pool is usually the first thing people notice in the backyard and is the focal point of many yards. Over time, tiles, plaster or just the overall appearance of the pool can use a facelift. An affordable and easy way to accomplish this is to consult a company that specializes in pool repair, renovation, and remodels that can transform a dull, boring or worn out pool into a resort-style look just by transforming new tiles or replastering your existing pool. Pool finishes are available in a wide range from standard plaster to glass beads and even mosaics. Depending on how long you plan to live in your home can determine the best finish for your investment. If you plan to sell your house within 5 years, you may want to consider plaster. If you plan to stay longer than 15 years, you may want a finish that will last longer such as Quartz or pebble finish. While they are about a third more expensive than plaster, these finishes will last up to about 15 years. Likewise, pool tile is available in a variety of choices from solid color to designer and glass in a selection

of different sizes. Depending on your budget and the time allocated for your project will determine what type of tile is best. In addition, to refinishing your pool, water features can be incorporated to add that extra WOW factor to your pool remodel. LED lighting and more efficient pool pumps can be installed as well to save you money on your energy. Pool automation controllers are a great way to give you the ability to heat up your pool or spa at specific times so it is ready after a long day. Not only does a pool facelift consist of just your pool, but also the hardscaping around your pool as well. Is your pool deck in need of a new look? A new deck with pavers will give your backyard that resort finish and increase the value of your home. Complete the look with a fire pit or outdoor barbecue for a great place to entertain friends and family. The options are endless when contemplating a pool renovation and remodel. If your pool and yard is in need of some TLC and you are looking to create your own backyard retreat, you can contact the professionals at Catalina Pools at 619-821-2086. They specialize in pool remodeling and renovations as well as brand new construction and backyard makeovers.

The Ultimate Shade Structure Has Arrived Rain Or Shine, Enjoy the Outdoors All Year Long!

E

njoying the outdoors is what makes living in San Diego all that and more. For some homeowners, the challenge can be keeping the rain out during rainy season, keeping the UV rays and heat out on hot summer days, but still enjoy the natural light. In addition, some homes are not designed well with the thought of having a patio cover installed down the road. A unique and innovative solution is the Aurora Shade system. With a sleek look, this customizable shade system can be fitted to almost any outdoor area. The roofing material is a high-quality Poly-Carbonate which is 250 times stronger than glass and blocks 100% of damaging UV rays. The special heat reduction poly carbonate pairs nicely with all the colored frames and blocks 75% of heat rays, you can enjoy your outdoor living area on the hottest day of summer without compromising your view. Although San Diego does occasionally get rain, it will not ruin your get-togethers with friends and family anymore. The Aurora Shade system is 100% waterproof and even has an integrated gutter system. The gutter is integrated very nicely with the cover as if it was invisible. The rain water will run into the gutter and through a down spout where you could use your water catchment or force the water to run off and away from the patio.

The material used to support the Aurora Shade system is an air-craft like quality aluminum alloy that is very strong and corrosive resistant. Aluminum alloys are ideal building material for resisting the elements, especially in coastal regions. Additionally, wood rot and termites become a non-issue. Because this system is maintenance free, there is no need to worry about painting, peeling or chipping. To clean, simply spray it with a garden hose – no detergents required. The water will wash away the dust and the integrated gutter system will catch the water and send it to the downspout. In addition to the Aurora Shade System, there are also a variety of Aurora carports. These carports come in a choice of different styles and have curb appeal. They also protect the paint and interior of your car from harmful UV rays and reduce the temperature of the vehicle by 75%. Restoring MAKES YOUR BARBEQUE SAFER, AND YOUR FOOD TASTE BETTER ust about everyone loves a good outdoor cookout, especially living in Southern California where the weather usually allows for year-round barbeques with friends and family. However, when it comes to cleaning the barbeque, that’s another story. It’s probably safe to say that most grills out there could use a good scrub down. Deep cleaning your barbeque will not only make it sparkle and shine, this procedure also will improve the taste of your food! This procedure removes fat, carbon deposits, and harmful carcinogens that can be transferred to your food. The deep cleaning also removes grease, which will make your outdoor cooking much safer by greatly reducing the chance of grease fires. On top of all of this, barbeque cleaning also prevent future corrosion, protecting your investment and extending the life of your grill. Now that it’s been established that cleaning your barbeque is a great idea, some homeowners might be asking, “Why not do this myself?” A thorough cleaning can be a messy job, and takes around two-and-a-half to three hours to properly execute. Therefore, a mobile barbeque company that can come to your home and utilize their proprietary cleaning system is a wise choice for any homeowner. Skilled technicians are friendly and knowledgeable about all aspects of your grill. They will arrive on time, secure the area around the grill with tarps and towels to protect your property, and then disassemble the grill from top to bottom in order to do a full inspection. They remove all the internal parts, including the cooking grates, heat plates, burners, basting pans, warming rack and hood. Internal parts are taken out to the truck to soak in our dip tank. Professionals will then degrease and sanitize the interior and exterior of the firebox from top to bottom, taking great care to get the finer details. After the body of the grill has been thoroughly cleaned, the hood is also cleaned inside and out, using caution to maintain the integrity of the grain on the stainless steel. During the third stage of this proprietary service, a combination of clean water, degreaser and special power tools are used to refurbish the parts. After the parts have been refurbished, everything is rinsed with water, and the burners are drilled out to make sure gas flow is consistent during cooking. The grill is then reassembled, tested again, and completely polished. For more information on mobile barbeque cleaning, you can contact San Diego BBQ at (858) 605-5777. They operate under the motto “Old grills, new grills, and everything in between,” and their friendly and well-trained staff is there to serve you. San Diego BBQ also sells parts and provides repairs for almost all brands. Common repairs include ignition system overhauls, valve replacement and parts installation. You can see a complete list of their services and prices online at www.sdbbqgrills.com.

Newest Treatment For Hair Loss

F

or many men and women (even as young as 20), hair loss and balding is becoming a more common and disappointing problem. Even a receding hairline can give the appearance of aging. While most men just “live with the problem”, balding and hair loss can affect self-esteem and confidence making them feel older than they really are. While there are expensive and timely procedures available for hair loss, there is a modern, non-surgical and drug-free alternative treatment suitable for both men and women. Officially referred to as Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), the technique involves replicating your own natural hair follicles and hair color with permanent pigment impressions to give the appearance of very short, clipper cut look. This widely used and effective process camouflages receding hairlines to create the look of a fuller head of hair for those with thinning hair. This is done by creating density and reducing sheen on the scalp. It enables people to redesign their hairline and give a new frame to their face. Popular among male clients in particular, the result is the flawless appearance of a full head of hair that’s been shaved, with minor ongoing maintenance. It’s an illusion, but a very convincing one. In addition, this treatment can cover any (FUE) hair transplant scars . Scalp Micropigmentation is a unique process performed by highly trained, certified specialists, utilizing specialized instruments and pigments.
