3 THINGS IN YOUR MATTRESS That May Be Making You Sick

Y

our mattress is arguably the most important piece of furniture in your house. Let’s face it, what other article in your home do you have as much contact with as your mattress? The average person spends 6-8 hours every day in their bed. That’s about ⅓ of your life! The mattress is also the only piece of furniture where your face is literally inches away breathing whatever is inside it. It’s hard to say what is inside every mattress, but there are 3 things that can be found in about 95% of mattresses (especially the mainstream and online companies) that can have a negative effect on your health. If you are sensitive to chemicals or have immune system issues, these are the 3 things to avoid in your mattress. 1. Polyurethane Foam. Since the 1970’s, polyurethane has replaced cotton and natural rubber as the go-to material for padding inside mattresses. It is very inexpensive to make and very easy to massproduce. However, since polyurethane is a petrochemical it is laden with chemicals that can off-gas. 2. Glues/Adhesives. On average the typical mattress has anywhere from 2-7 layers of padding. To keep these layers from shifting, mattress companies usually glue these layers together. The problem with gluing these layers together is the many chemicals that are found in adhesives. In some cases, you can still smell the glue many days after it has been delivered.

12

SAN DIEGO LIVING • OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018

3. Chemical-Based Fire Retardants. In 2007, a federal law was passed that mandated that every mattress must pass the fire test. While that law might have solved one problem, it opened up the door to a host of many other problems regarding people’s health. A couple of the dozens of chemicals that are used in most fire retardants are formaldehyde and antimony trioxide, both of which have been shown to be carcinogens. If you have a mattress from a typical mattress retailer or if you purchased online, chances are you may be sleeping with some of these chemicals. But there is an alternative to your typical mattress. The solution to this problem is an all-natural mattress free of the potentially harmful chemicals listed above. Natural materials like natural rubber/latex, cotton, and wool are used instead of synthetic foams. Natural latex comes from the rubber tree where the liquid from the tree is used instead of petroleum. Not only is latex a lot healthier but it is also much more durable. The average latex mattress lasts 2-3 times longer than a traditional mattress. For more information on selecting a mattress for your individual needs, you can visit Mattress Makers at 7919 Silverton Ave., Suite 412 in Miramar or 8366 La Mesa Blvd. in La Mesa. Building mattresses since 1968, they use 100% natural and organic latex with a 20 year limited warranty. You can call them at 858-566-4408 or 619-303-9505 or contact them at one of the following: info@mattressmakers.com or www.mattressmakers.com

WHY RUGS LEAVE THE HOME TO BE CLEANED By: Lisa Wagner (NIRC Certified Rug Specialist and author of www.RugChick.com)

Gabbeh wool rug BEFORE proper washing

M

any things cause damage to rugs: floods, fires, pets, and moths. But nothing ruins more rugs annually than wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies. The chemistry, temperature, and techniques for steam cleaning installed synthetic wall-to-wall carpet are the polar opposite of how natural fiber rugs are supposed to be handled. Synthetic carpet is steam cleaned; natural fiber rugs are cold water washed. Most rugs are made of wool and cotton fibers, and should be treated more as fabric than as carpeting. They are to be washed and soaked to gently and thoroughly remove the contaminants, and someone who is skilled with rug fibers, rug dyes, and weaving types from around the world must do this. Here are the biggest reasons why rugs are never to be cleaned in the home. 1.) Dusting Can’t Be Done. Rugs can hold pounds of soil in them before they begin to look dirty. Most wool rugs release between two-and-ten pounds of embedded soil in the dusting process before the wash begins. This absolutely cannot be done in the home, so cleaners who steam clean rugs create an impacted layer of mud in the foundation of these rugs, which leads to a permanent graying of the wool and eventually dry rot in the foundation fibers. 2.) Heat Damages Natural Fibers and Dyes.

18

SAN DIEGO LIVING • OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018

High heat on natural fibers makes the dyes bleed and breaks wool fibers. You would never wash your wool clothing in hot water and dry it in high heat unless you wanted to ruin it. 3.) Tool Scarring. The metal tools that are safe to use on synthetic plastic fibers are not safe on wool, silk, and cotton rugs. Edges on vacuum tools, and rakes and brushes, can cause permanent pile damage and scarring on rugs. 4.) Heavy Chemical Residue. Fearful of getting the floor under the rug wet, those who clean rugs in the home are not able to rinse out all of the chemicals they put in, and the sticky residue left behind causes damage to the fibers and the dyes. 5.) Mildew and Odors. You cannot run dehumidifiers and high velocity fans in a home. Therefore, most rugs stay damp for too much time, which can lead to musty odors and mildew. 6.) Dirty Fringe. Fringe cannot be cleaned in the home, and usually it’s the fringe that looks the filthiest to begin with. These tassels need to be soaked to get the grime to release. Woven rugs will last several lifetimes if properly cared for. Protect your textile investments by sending them out for a proper wash. MAKE YOUR HOME THEATER ROOMPERFECT!

J

ust about everyone loves watching a movie on the big screen. However, no one likes standing in long lines or searching for and sitting in uncomfortable seats with sticky floors. Fortunately, private home theaters are now able to deliver an immersive movie watching experience that is superior to commercial cinemas. When considering building a home theater, there are many questions to answer. Will you be watching sports, TV programs, or Hollywood blockbusters? How big should the room be? What type of furniture do you like and where will it sit in the room? Do you like a classic or modern design, or maybe you have a particular theme in mind? The answers to these questions and many others affect critical decisions such as which projector, screen type and size, lighting, acoustical treatments, and sound systems to use. A home theater that delivers an “escape from reality” into the movie maker’s world is not realized by chance or happenstance; it must be engineered. Particular engineering advancements in home theater technology are the Steinway Lyngdorf and McIntosh systems. Manufactured to very exacting standards, the speakers and electronics in the Steinway line were created to emulate the listening experience of a live performance in Steinway Hall in New York. The sound accuracy, dynamics and power are identical to a live musical performance. Movie soundtracks replicate the sound of the original film soundtrack better than that of a commercial movie theater. Both Steinway Lyngdorf and McIntosh systems utilize a patented sound correction technology called RoomPerfect™. RoomPerfect is a sophisticated technology that corrects imperfect acoustics in a listening

22

SAN DIEGO LIVING • OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018

room. Simply put, you can have exceptional sound without sacrificing your design aesthetics—no more ugly furniture placement or speakers in the middle of the room. Many companies claim to be home theater experts, few of them actually are. It is recommended to find a company specializing in home theater design and installation. Experts will collaborate with you and your interior design professional, architect, or builder to help you visualize the home theater of your dreams. They should gather information about your theme, décor, furniture, lighting, room space and watching preferences to create a complete home theater project plan. For your home theater project to be successful, your plan should include floor plans, elevations, construction drawings, wiring diagrams, acoustical engineering, product specifications and wall treatments that are specific to you. To learn more about RoomPerfect or designing the ultimate home theater, you can call One Touch Living at (858) 798-9130. One Touch Living is a single source provider for world class audio and video equipment, screens, control systems, furniture, acoustical treatments and installation services. homeremodeling CONSIDER ADDING A GUEST HOUSE, GRANNY FLAT OR CAREGIVER QUARTERS...

It’s Never Been Easier!

I

f you have ever considered adding extra space to your home or considered a guesthouse on your property? Or perhaps have you been looking to generate some rental income? A granny flat is a great way to utilize your space. And, because of a new bill that has been passed, many of the barriers in the past will now make it easier for homeowners and construction companies to build. A granny flat is a self-contained dwelling which may or may not attach to the main home. They can be constructed as a loft in your existing home if you are looking to move a family member in or it can be built as a secondary dwelling on your property that can be used as a guest house or rental property. It will contain everything necessary to live comfortable, including all electrical work, plumbing for kitchen and bath, painting, lighting, cabinetry, flooring, windows and more. State Senator Bob Wieckowski’s (D-Freemont) bill SB 1069 to reduce the barriers California homeowners face when seeking to build an accessory dwelling unit (granny flat) on

their property is now in effect as of January 2017 after Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill in September 2016. Removing these obstacles creates a powerful tool for addressing California’s housing crisis that have discouraged homeowners from adding affordable second units in the past. This will now help to increase the supply of affordable housing in California and allow more people to remain in the communities they call home. AOC Construction is up to date on all the latest rules and regulations regarding the creation of granny flats. For more information, you can contact them at 619-226-0772 or info@aocconstruction.com.
