Your One Stop Showroom For All Your Landscape Needs While many homeowners enjoy having their backyard landscaped, often homeowners are led to believe the misconception that by just adding a pool or outdoor kitchen, these features will create the “ultimate backyard.” While a pool may bring fun and family together, it may not be the answer for some homeowners. There are many additional fundamentals or (missing pieces) that homeowners may not be aware of that can be implemented to give them the utilization, expansion and lifestyle to their outdoor living space, creating the true ultimate resort feeling and space. OUTDOOR LIGHTING. Without lighting, you can’t see, right? Without lighting, there is no use of space. Just like having lighting in the interior of your home which allows you to function and utilize your space, outdoor lighting allows you to fully use your yard. Lighting is the most inexpensive and easiest element to add square footage to your yard and produce maximum, usable space. CUSHIONS AND CABANAS. Coordination and mixing and matching cushions and pillows for your outdoor chairs and chaise lounges and coordinating the fabric with a cabana can tie in the whole look and theme of your yard. Additional items such as umbrellas and daybeds can utilize the same fabrics to give your yard a finished and inviting look. STRUCTURE. A trellis or an arbor can be displayed as a beautiful focal point to any outdoor space. For extra shade, a palapa is a good choice and can create a tropical feel. SOUND SYSTEM. What better way to enjoy the end of your day than to relax on your patio with a glass of wine listening to soft jazz or cranking up the rock music with friends and family at an outdoor party. A sound system will create an environment that you want to hang out in.

WATER FEATURES. The sound and effect of water is a natural calming element. Even if a yard already has a pool, water can also be implemented in other areas of the yard with urns, fountains and waterfall structures. FIRE. This element can create ambiance and romance in the outdoor space. It can also create unity as people are drawn to and gather around areas of fire. Aside from firepits, fire can also be implemented using bowls or tiki poles. ART. Art can be utilized in the backyard to add life. Items such as statuary, carved wooded angels, pottery and other features can add that extra touch to give your yard a more harmonious and visual appeal. NATURALIZATION LANDSCAPE. For many homeowners, having beautiful flowers and plants is something many only get to experience 4-5 months out of the year because they die due to lack of water, too much water, bugs, frost or heat - there is always a reason they die. The Naturalization line is zero-maintenance exterior artificial flowers and plants that you can enjoy 365 days of the year. You can choose anything from hedges, living walls, hanging plants, or junipers to integrate graceful accents with a variety of flowers to brighten up your yard, adding color. The trick is to integrate with your existing plants.

For more information on implementing all the pieces needed to transform your backyard to the perfect outdoor living space, you can contact the experts at Direct Lighting Outdoor Lifestyle at 760-304-8183. omeowners want their homes to resonate with the natural setting. An expansive wall of windows facing a spectacular view integrates the residence with its surroundings. But these open windows can mean extreme sun exposure raising the room temperatures to what some homeowners describe as unbearable. There are films on the market that have a nonexistent appearance offering high heat rejection and clarity while preserving the view. These advanced window films help block UV rays and infrared heat at the source while allowing natural light in, leaving the view virtually unchanged and enhanced. Window shades cost four times more than window films and block that incredible view. Films also protect from pre-mature fading. By blocking 99.9% of the UV rays, furnishings, fabrics and wood are protected from the harmful effects of the sun. And according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, window film is one of several recommended safeguards against UV damage for your skin.

12

SAN DIEGO LIVING • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

Window films offer enhanced comfort and protection. They can reject anywhere from 20-84% of the incoming heat keeping the interior considerably cooler, reducing the load on cooling systems, thereby saving energy. Glare from the intense sun is also greatly reduced, sometimes eliminated. NU-VUE Window Films is an authorized 3M Prestige dealer. The 3M Prestige line of films uses non-metallized, multi-layer, optical film and nano-technology to reject up to 97% of the sun’s infrared light, up to 60% of incoming heat. Being nonmetallic, the Prestige Series Films aren’t susceptible to corrosion in coastal environments and will not interfere with electronic device signals. Setting the Prestige Series films apart is the precision with which light waves are controlled as they pass through or reflect off hundreds of layers of film. Compared to other films, the Prestige Series increases their performance at a faster rate as the sun’s angle increases. That means greater protection and comfort when you need it the most. When the sun is working its hardest so is 3Ms Prestige series.

Films that reject heat tend to have high reflectivity. Not with the 3M Prestige Series. These films are optically clear and can offer reflectivity that, in some cases, is lower than glass. That means the same visual clarity inside and out, day and night. The film isn’t noticeable, and it’s doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The house is more comfortable, your interiors are protected, glare is reduced with no maintenance. Most residential films carry a lifetime warranty by the manufacturer and are covered under the HERO and YGRENE programs. Call today for your free in home consultation to see how window films can help improve your home. The professionals at NU-VUE Window Films have been improving San Diego’s windows for almost 30 years. Their services include everything from residential, retail store, and commercial window tinting. They also offer film removal services and free in home consultations. THE 3 MOST COMMON MATTRESS SHOPPING MISTAKES And How To Avoid Them

attress shopping isn’t the most fun and easy thing to do. It also doesn’t help when you have mattress companies capitalizing on consumer’s lack of knowledge when it comes to mattress shopping. To help with the shopping process, there are 3 common mattress shopping mistakes and how to avoid them. 1. Buying a Mattress that is Too Firm. One of the biggest mistakes people make when purchasing a new mattress is believing the myth that firmer is better. People convince themselves in getting a firm mattress because they think it’s better for them, when in reality they should have trusted what their body was telling them and go with one that felt better, even though it was a little softer. Getting a mattress that is too firm can cause painful pressure points on the hips and shoulders causing you to toss and turn to get comfortable or even cutting off your circulation. Another problem with buying a mattress that is too firm is that it is not conforming to your curves properly. If a mattress does not contour to your body, then the muscles around your spine will be forced to overcompensate for the lack of support thus you may end up with back pain. 2. Buying Based On Name Brand. Unfortunately in the mattress industry you don’t get what you pay for and purchasing a big name brand is the epitome of this being true. About 60%70% of the market is owned by two very large companies. Not mentioning names, but for example, “big S” companies (with one T). These companies really drive the direction of the industry and

14

SAN DIEGO LIVING • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

over the years the quality of their products slowly decline. The mattresses may feel very comfortable and look very nice but it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Also keep in mind with the brand name comes insane markups because of high overhead cost. Instead of focusing on brand, focus on craftsmanship and the materials that go into making the mattress. 3. Buying Without Testing. Did you know people spend about a third of their life in their beds? That is a lot of use their mattress gets. With a product that is used every day and is very important to your health, it should not be purchased blindly. A mattress is the most important piece of furniture in the home and time should be invested trying out different mattresses. You want to find the one that fits your needs. There is no “one size fits all” mattress. To avoid this mistake spend at least 10-15 minutes on the two you like the most and compare them. Spending 1015 minutes testing a mattress gives you a good amount of time for your body to adjust to the surface. If you have time to lay longer then go for it- the more time, the better. For more information on selecting a mattress for your individual needs, you can visit Mattress Makers at 7919 Silverton Ave., suite 412, Miramar or 8366 La Mesa Blvd., La Mesa. Building Mattresses since 1968, they use 100% natural and organic latex with a 20 year limited warranty. WHY RUGS LEAVE THE HOME TO BE CLEANED By: Lisa Wagner (NIRC Certified Rug Specialist and author of www.RugChick.com)

Gabbeh wool rug BEFORE proper washing

M

any things cause damage to rugs: floods, fires, pets, and moths. But nothing ruins more rugs annually than wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies. The chemistry, temperature, and techniques for steam cleaning installed synthetic wall-to-wall carpet are the polar opposite of how natural fiber rugs are supposed to be handled. Synthetic carpet is steam cleaned; natural fiber rugs are cold water washed. Most rugs are made of wool and cotton fibers, and should be treated more as fabric than as carpeting. They are to be washed and soaked to gently and thoroughly remove the contaminants, and someone who is skilled with rug fibers, rug dyes, and weaving types from around the world must do this. Here are the biggest reasons why rugs are never to be cleaned in the home. 1.) Dusting Can’t Be Done. Rugs can hold pounds of soil in them before they begin to look dirty. Most wool rugs release between two-and-ten pounds of embedded soil in the dusting process before the wash begins. This absolutely cannot be done in the home, so cleaners who steam clean rugs create an impacted layer of mud in the foundation of these rugs, which leads to a permanent graying of the wool and eventually dry rot in the foundation fibers. 2.) Heat Damages Natural Fibers and Dyes.

18

SAN DIEGO LIVING • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

Gabbeh wool rug AFTER proper washing

High heat on natural fibers makes the dyes bleed and breaks wool fibers. You would never wash your wool clothing in hot water and dry it in high heat unless you wanted to ruin it. 3.) Tool Scarring. The metal tools that are safe to use on synthetic plastic fibers are not safe on wool, silk, and cotton rugs. Edges on vacuum tools, and rakes and brushes, can cause permanent pile damage and scarring on rugs. 4.) Heavy Chemical Residue. Fearful of getting the floor under the rug wet, those who clean rugs in the home are not able to rinse out all of the chemicals they put in, and the sticky residue left behind causes damage to the fibers and the dyes. 5.) Mildew and Odors. You cannot run dehumidifiers and high velocity fans in a home. Therefore, most rugs stay damp for too much time, which can lead to musty odors and mildew. 6.) Dirty Fringe. Fringe cannot be cleaned in the home, and usually it’s the fringe that looks the filthiest to begin with. These tassels need to be soaked to get the grime to release. Woven rugs will last several lifetimes if properly cared for. Protect your textile investments by sending them out for a proper wash. BUYING VINTAGE WINE Who Can You Trust?

I

f you have ever bought a bottle of vintage wine from a retailer, you may have wondered whether the bottle you are buying is going to be great or going to be vinegar. Like many people, it may not be the number one thing they are thinking of at the time of purchase but it’s always in the back their mind. Finding a reliable retailer who stands behind their product, keeps their prices at the low end of the market and provides a great customer experience is extremely important and not as easy to find as you may think. Most retailers purchase aged bottles from private collectors who, for the most part, take great care of their wine. Some collect for the thrill of getting a prized bottle,

20

SAN DIEGO LIVING • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

some do it just for the sake of collecting, but almost all see it as some sort of investment they need to protect. Proper storage conditions are extremely important. If any wine is kept at the right temperature throughout its life, you are almost guaranteed a great experience when you go to pop that cork. On the flip side, are collectors who may have perfect storage conditions now, but when they first started could have kept their wine in a closet or somewhere else where conditions weren’t optimal. The trick for most retailers is to decipher all the information given to them by the person they are buying from and make an accurate determination to trust whether all the bottles in the collection are up to snuff. After all it's you, the end buyer, they are buying for. A diligent wine merchant will spend a lot of time with each collector and ask a lot of questions. Sampling a cross section of wine from each cellar to determine whether the wines are what they should be before buying will give an overall impression of the cellar as a whole and one of the most important parts of the buying process. If the first few bottles aren’t good it’s best just to walk away Price is another important factor when making a vintage wine purchase and can vary greatly on the same bottle between retailers. Having a shop that can provide you with a well stored bottle is one thing but getting the wine at the right price is just as important. Finewinecollector.com is a San Diego based online retailer who specializes in vintage wine, has the lowest prices in the country and stands behind every bottle they sell with an emphasis on fine customer service. If you’d like to give them a try simply contact the owner, Jim Shaw via email at Jim@finewinecollecor.com , by phone at 619-231-WINE (9463) or simply visit his site at www.finewinecollector.com and check out his current stock. TIPS FROM A PRO for Keeping Your Natural Stone Looking Great If you have natural stone in your home, here are some tips from a stone restoration professional for keeping it looking beautiful

R

outine cleaning and care of natural stone counter tops, floors, walls, and other surfaces will help keep your home looking elegant. Here are a few stone care do's and don'ts that will go a long way in helping you keep it looking beautiful. Don't Use Inappropriate Cleaners One of the most common, but very erroneous recommendations for cleaning natural stone is to use vinegar. The fact is anything acidic will damage marble and other calcite base stones. Be careful to only use quality cleaners designated safe for natural stone. Your stone restoration contractor can recommend the best type of cleaners for your natural stone floors, countertops, shower walls, and other surfaces. Do Use Preventative Measures Easy, but effective habits can make an incredible difference in the appearance of your stone. For example, placing coasters under drinking glasses—particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices—can help prevent etching. Using place mats under china, silver, and other hard or heavy objects or trivets under hot dishes can prevent scratches and damage to table tops, bar tops, and countertops.

24

SAN DIEGO LIVING • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

Do Clean Spills Quickly As soon as you notice a spill, clean it as quickly as possible to prevent staining and acidic substances from chemically reacting with the surface of the stone. Don't Use Abrasives for Dried-On Spills If a spill sits too long on the surface of your natural stone, don't use scouring powders, green scrubbing pads, steel wool, or other abrasives. The silicon carbide grits in them will scratch even the toughest granite. Do Use Appropriate Cleaning Methods for Dried-On Spills Spray stone-safe cleaner and allow it ample dwell time for dried-on spills. You can safely use the sponges lined with a silvery net or other plastic scouring pads to remove the softened soil. This method not only helps prevent scratches, but it will make your job easier and more effective. Don't Take Chances Be careful when using cleaners around your natural stone. Overspray or drips can cause etch damage to the stone surface. Do Protect Surrounding Areas There are couple of ways you can prevent damage to your natural stone caused by overspray or dripping of cleaners made for non-stone surfaces. The first is to use stone-safe, soap-free, neutral cleaners that won't harm your natural stone. The second is to place a protective barrier, such as a towel or some plastic, on surrounding areas. Set in Stone Restoration in San Diego has serviced thousands of homeowners and commercial properties with natural stone restoration, repair and protection. DON'T LET THE PIPES IN YOUR HOME CAUSE THIS

I

t’s any homeowners nightmare – you are at work or away for the weekend only to come home and find your home is flooded with water! This unfortunately is becoming a very common problem to many homeowners due to old, corroded or clogged pipes which causes a burst pipe or slab leak. The vast majority of the nation’s water pipes were installed after World War II and are in serious need of replacement or repair. In-home plumbing issues such as pipe clogs, leaks and breaks are surprisingly common, and the numbers are becoming more common as America’s pipes age. Repairs to this costly problem is often not covered by homeowners insurance, you could end up paying hundreds to thousands of dollars to fix them. Because the average homeowner is unaware of the most common causes of water problems outside and inside their homes, there are some concerns every homeowner should be aware of. How old are your pipes? Do you have mature trees near your water service lines? Have you been ignoring warning signs such as water spots in the foundation or discoloration on the drywall or baseboards that are warping or bubbling? Has your water bill increased for no apparent reason? These are just a few of the warning signs to look for.

26

SAN DIEGO LIVING • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

But for some, hidden factors that go on such as corrosion, damaged pipe joints and natural elements can be the cause of the problem. Hiring a professional plumbing company who can regularly do a general maintenance by cleaning the main line, inspection on toilets, sinks, water heater and garbage disposals for any potential problems and repair them professionally can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. It is not a matter of if, it is when this problem will happen. For more information or to schedule an evaluation of your property’s plumbing, you can call CVB Plumbing at 866-282-7422 or visit their website at cvbplumbing.com. I

It’s Never Been Easier!

f you have ever considered adding extra space to your home or considered a guesthouse on your property? Or perhaps have you been looking to generate some rental income? A granny flat is a great way to utilize your space. And, because of a new bill that has been passed, many of the barriers in the past will now make it easier for homeowners and construction companies to build. A granny flat is a self-contained dwelling which may or may not attach to the main home. They can be constructed as a loft in your existing home if you are looking to move a family member in or it can be built as a secondary dwelling on your property that can be used as a guest house or rental property. It will contain everything necessary to live comfortable, including all electrical work, plumbing for kitchen and bath, painting, lighting, cabinetry, flooring, windows and more. State Senator Bob Wieckowski’s (D-Freemont) bill SB 1069 to reduce the barriers California homeowners face when seeking to build an accessory dwelling unit (granny flat) on

Removing these obstacles creates a powerful tool for addressing California’s housing crisis that have discouraged homeowners from adding affordable second units in the past. The material used to support the Aurora Shade system is an air-craft like quality aluminum alloy that is very strong and corrosive resistant. Aluminum alloys are ideal building material for resisting the elements, especially in coastal regions. Additionally, wood rot and termites become a non-issue. Because this system is maintenance free, there is no need to worry about painting, peeling or chipping. To clean, simply spray it with a garden hose – no detergents required. The water will wash away the dust and the integrated gutter system will catch the water and send it to the downspout. In addition to the Aurora Shade System, there are also a variety of Aurora carports. These carports come in a choice of different styles and have curb appeal. They also protect the paint and interior of your car from harmful UV rays and reduce the temperature of the vehicle by 75%. To learn more about the Aurora Shade System and Aurora carports, you can call the authorized dealer, Premier Exteriors at 760-300-3683. They can come to your home to ensure the system will fit your outdoor areas. For additional information you can visit their website at www.premierexteriorproducts.com. Restoring MAKES YOUR BARBEQUE SAFER, AND YOUR FOOD TASTE BETTER ust about everyone loves a good outdoor cookout, especially living in Southern California where the weather usually allows for year-round barbeques with friends and family. However, when it comes to cleaning the barbeque, that’s another story. It’s probably safe to say that most grills out there could use a good scrub down. Deep cleaning your barbeque will not only make it sparkle and shine, this procedure also will improve the taste of your food! This procedure removes fat, carbon deposits, and harmful carcinogens that can be transferred to your food. The deep cleaning also removes grease, which will make your outdoor cooking much safer by greatly reducing the chance of grease fires. On top of all of this, barbeque cleaning also prevent future corrosion, protecting your investment and extending the life of your grill. Now that it’s been established that cleaning your barbeque is a great idea, some homeowners might be asking, “Why not do this myself?” A thorough cleaning can be a messy job, and takes around two-and-a-half to three hours to properly execute. Therefore, a mobile barbeque company that can come to your home and utilize their proprietary cleaning system is a wise choice for any homeowner. Skilled technicians are friendly and knowledgeable about all aspects of your grill. They will arrive on time, secure the area around the grill with tarps and towels to protect your property, and then disassemble the grill from top to bottom in order to do a full inspection. They remove all the internal parts, including the cooking grates, heat plates, burners, basting pans, warming rack and hood. Internal parts are taken out to the truck to soak in our dip tank. Professionals will then degrease and sanitize the interior and exterior of the firebox from top to bottom, taking great care to get the finer details. After the body of the grill has been thoroughly cleaned, the hood is also cleaned inside and out, using caution to maintain the integrity of the grain on the stainless steel. During the third stage of this proprietary service, a combination of clean water, degreaser and special power tools are used to refurbish the parts. After the parts have been refurbished, everything is rinsed with water, and the burners are drilled out to make sure gas flow is consistent during cooking. The grill is then reassembled, tested again, and completely polished. For more information on mobile barbeque cleaning, you can contact San Diego BBQ at (858) 605-5777. They operate under the motto “Old grills, new grills, and everything in between,” and their friendly and well-trained staff is there to serve you. San Diego BBQ also sells parts and provides repairs for almost all brands. Common repairs include ignition system overhauls, valve replacement and parts installation. You can see a complete list of their services and prices online at www.sdbbqgrills.com.

Newest Treatment For Hair Loss

F

or many men and women (even as young as 20), hair loss and balding is becoming a more common and disappointing problem. Even a receding hairline can give the appearance of aging. While most men just “live with the problem”, balding and hair loss can affect self-esteem and confidence making them feel older than they really are. While there are expensive and timely procedures available for hair loss, there is a modern, non-surgical and drug-free alternative treatment suitable for both men and women. Officially referred to as Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), the technique involves replicating your own natural hair follicles and hair color with permanent pigment impressions to give the appearance of very short, clipper cut look. This widely used and effective process camouflages receding hairlines to create the look of a fuller head of hair for those with thinning hair. This is done by creating density and reducing sheen on the scalp. It enables people to redesign their hairline and give a new frame to their face. Popular among male clients in particular, the result is the flawless appearance of a full head of hair that’s been shaved, with minor ongoing maintenance. It’s an illusion, but a very convincing one. In addition, this treatment can cover any (FUE) hair transplant scars . Scalp Micropigmentation is a unique process performed by highly trained, certified specialists, utilizing specialized instruments and pigments. For more information, you can
