The houses are designed with orientation which best suites each individual property. On cannot assume that because the houses are in one cluster, similar to any residential estate that they all have the same thermal reference. Creating living spaces, working environments and holiday apartments, the team has had experience in all areas of architectural design but yet maintain the bespoke spaces.

Each member of Evolve is highly trained within their discipline of architecture and design to offer the latest trends from all over the world.

The foremost feature of Evolve is that each house is looked at from a blank canvas point of view and with their latest project, 83 on Leslie, the Evolve approach really stood out, creating a home with its own specific detail design and setting that has an influence regarding the warm for winter and cool for summer.

The house is a true reflection of chic design and nature coming together to create a living space that reduces its very own carbon footprint. Rain water harvesting ensures that no natural water resources are lost. Irrigation of the house and all its greenery is now easier as the house is self sustainable through all seasons.

Temperature control within this architectural splendor is manipulated by passive heating and cooling systems in place. This is a detailed process that is unique to each house and living space. It is very important that a detailed site analysis is undertaken to ensure that this system is implemented. Positioning of windows, size, glazing type and shading all play an intricate role and this all is taken into consideration when implementing the passive heating and cooling system. This allows for a better climate control and enjoying of the living spaces in all seasons adding to the contemporary design style of house 83 on Leslie.

The kitchen is finished with a gas hob to give it a clean and slick design and to maintain the low carbon footprint. The finish also leans towards a gourmet styled kitchen assisting in catering for huge parties that the open plan areas cater for.

What inspires one to create such exclusivity? For Pierre the answer is simple: His love for natural wood and designing furniture that compliments the natural character of the timber. With a background in Civil Engineering, Pierre finds inspiration in simplicity and functionality.

As a young engineer he was involved in the construction of the Bloukrans Bridge, and the lines of curves of this construction, for example, are still the inspiration behind some of his table designs.

No two trees are identical – just like the innovative pieces Pierre creates from that raw, natural word. Each is unique in its splendour, showcasing its individual journey. Pierre transforms and reveals new beauty in form and finish, sourcing entire trees from sustainable forests.

It seems to be rather clear that there simply is no end to the passion of this master artisan, nor is there any limit to the unique ideas and designs he has to offer. And although the handmade furniture production game is labour-intensive, Pierre Cronje and his team have undertaken to never compromise on standards or revert to a production line.

Under the watchful eye of creative entrepreneur, founder and owner of Incanda furniture, Gerhard van Deventer, it is here where all the magic happens.

From his humble beginnings in the leather and skins wholesaling industry, Gerhard has always allowed his creative instincts and his passion to guide him to new horizons and bigger ventures while somehow always remaining rooted.

Following plenty of requests from leather customers for upholstered products, Gerhard decided to recruit a varsity friend, Hendri Visser as production manager. The duo started constructing furniture and thus Incanda furniture was born in 2003.

This new venture was an instant success and soon lead to the addition of a re-upholstery department where well-lived classics could be restored to their former glory.

In the years that followed Incanda has grown in leaps and bounds and now includes a workshop where wooden furniture is manufactured from start to finish as well as an interior decorating service.

Years down the line Incanda now employs close to 90 people and apart from the showroom in Paarl, the business has expanded to include three more showrooms in Durbanville, Somerset West and Greenside in Johannesburg.

As one would expect from a passionate entrepreneur and visionary, Gerhard’s aspirations for this highly successful company reaches even further.

While the first decade of his venture was devoted to establishing the business and optimizing production capacity, Gerhard has now turned his focus on three key areas namely developing a truly South African inspired and designed range of products unique to Incanda; turning the factory into a world-class operation in terms of efficiency and high quality and taking client service to another level in order to become the country’s favourite furniture brand.

Qatar Airways celebrated 10 years of successful service from Johannesburg in South Africa today with a high-level press briefing at which it revealed details of its enhanced services to South Africa as part of its expanding global operations.

The five-star airline has been successfully serving South Africa from its Doha home since 2005 and currently operates from Cape Town three times weekly and Johannesburg 10 times weekly.

Starting October 1, 2015, Qatar Airways will add four additional frequencies taking its Cape Town service to a full daily service, and from December 17, 2015, will upgrade its Johannesburg service to a full double daily service.

In addition, on December 17, 2015, the airline will start a four-times weekly service to Durban – with all three routes being serviced by the airline’s state-of-theart Boeing Dreamliner.

Analjit’s love affair with South Africa started when he first visited the country with his daughter for the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2010. On subsequent trips he visited Cape Town and ventured into the Cape winelands, where he felt “a deep sense of belonging, of energy, a sense of place” in the valley of Franschhoek. He began his search for a property and knew that he had found the right place the minute he set foot on a 40-hectare farm on the slopes of the Dassenberg mountain.

His company bought the property and, subsequently, those on either side. The three farms, Klein Dassenberg, Dieu Donné and Von Ortloff, have been amalgamated within the Leeu Collection portfolio, under the name Leeu Estates. The Afrikaans word leeu is a translation of Singh, the Sanskrit word for lion.

The focus for the Wedding Concepts design team turned to creating unique concepts that would ensure various details across the day were not only personalised but also customised down to the last embroided napkin – which all 250 guests received at their place setting! Rosette’s love of pastel colours and hues of gold were reflected throughout the day and across all the key elements that go into creating bespoke wedding décor. A specially designed “logo” incorporating the couple’s initials was applied on the dancefloor as well as on all the handcrafted details such as exclusive gifts, luxurious wedding stationery and even on the custom-made floral photo wall which was a highlight for guests during Pre-Dinner Drinks!

The inspired creativity did not end there! The vast lawns,

which were surrounded by panoramic views of the Stellenbosch mountain range, were transformed into a stylish open-lounge area with furniture that too had been custom-made. There were also unique lighting features at the reception as well as an unbelievable “double-sided” entertainment stage layout that would play host to some of South Africa’s top entertainment acts! The groom had always emphasized the importance of top entertainment throughout the day and Wedding Concepts subsequently engaged a number of A-list South African entertainers such as Hiphop Pantsula, 5-piece jazz ensemble Breakfast Included and the talented singing duo, Mafikizolo who had all 280 guests, including high-ranking government officials and other VIP guests, on their feet dancing!

The dinner tables were adorned with amazing floral “talkof-the-town” centerpieces that added an incredible kaleidoscope of romantic colour to the reception. “Vanessa Gounden, female mining magnate and arguably the most successful and pioneering female entrepreneur of our country” What could possibly be the link between a mining magnate, a political activist, the National Intelligence Agency, an entrepreneur and a fashion designer? These actually all refer to one person – Vanessa Gounden. And this is her story.

At the age of 10, the apartheid state of South Africa forcibly removed her family to a dormitory township with minimal facilities. They were also cut off from their previous livelihood.

Vanessa Gounden, female mining magnate and arguably the most successful and pioneering female entrepreneur of our country, was born in South Africa in 1961, making her a typical child of first generation South Africans. She grew up on a smallholding with her grandparents in a mixed racial area near Durban. Vanessa spent her childhood helping her family, cutting and preparing roses to sell to the florists in the district. They were 4 adults and 16

Then, as a teenager, Vanessa joined the ANC, where she met her future husband, today a very successful and recognised businessman, Dr Sivandran Gounden. She combined her activism with getting a university degree and, later on, became a primary school teacher. After the ANC government came to power in 1994, she helped rebuild a new South Africa on personal request by late President Nelson Mandela. She served in the Mandela administra-

tion and became actively involved in the trade union movement, before becoming the director of change management in the police.

Later on, under President Thabo Mbeki, Vanessa headed up human resources for the National Intelligence Agency, recruiting the country’s top spies. Despite her success in politics, Vanessa decided to join her husband in starting their own business together – something that would give new direction to her life and be the beginning of so many exciting opportunities.

HolGoun Investment Holdings was born – a South African investment holding company which was built from humble beginnings into an extremely successful multi-divisional company headed by Vanessa and her husband, Dr Sivandran (or Sivi to friends and family) Gounden, who is, as founder, still involved as Non-Executive Chairman of the HolGoun Group. Just like his wife, Dr Sivi Gounden has made his mark in the business sector: He was formerly the Chief Executive Officer of Bateman Engineering N.V., where he was responsible for the listing of Bateman Engineering N.V. on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange. And one simply cannot overlook his successes as Non-Executive Director of Optimum Coal, Lonmin Plc, Grindrod Limited and Anglo American SA, as well as Director-General of the Department of Public Enter-

prises, where he was responsible for the listing of Telkom SA on the New York Stock Exchange Inc and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. He presently holds directorships in Samancor, various HolGoun Group of Companies, and Daly Credit Corporation.

But Vanessa’s story takes another interesting turn…

Not only is she a highly respectable business women, Vanessa is also known as a successful fashion designer – one who is now the proud owner of a recently launched flagship store on Conduit Street – the epicentre of London’s luxury shopping – making her the first South African designer to own and open a freestanding store in the United Kingdom. Her exquisite and unique clothing range, Vanessa G (which was first launched in London in 2011), has been seen worn by women like Yasmin Le Bon, Jade Jagger, Poppy Delevigne and Natalia Vodianova – all of whom reflect Vanessa’s ideals of strong wom-

en that have an appreciation of the arts and dressing in a considered manner.

Vanessa may be mingling in different circles than those she found herself in as a child, but she still remembers what is was like to be marked as ‘poor’ and ‘underprivileged’. Besides her involvement in various charities and community help, the image of the rose is also often used as inspiration of her designs – a flower which played a large role in her childhood, and which could be seen as a simple reminder of her past.

Not content with these commercial ventures, Vanashree has cast her vision further afield, managing the Singh Family Foundation to promote the creative arts and education. A mother herself, she has a passion for children, especially those who suffer in less advantaged circumstances. This passion found its outlet in Save the Children Kwazulu Natal where for 10 years, she served as Chairperson. Subsequently, she became a board member of the non-profit organisation, Save the Children South Africa.

Thanks to her visionary inspiration and leadership, the organisation’s footprint has grown exponentially, initiating numerous outreach programmes to assist underprivileged children in KwaZUlu Natal and in South Africa.

A true role model for young women, Vanashree is clearly not the type of person to rest on her laurels and one can only watch and wait to see what her next venture will be, confident that it will once again be an initiative that will enrich others, providing hope and inspiration.

South African artists Lionel Smit was born in Pretoria in 1982. He comes from a highly artistic background, and the young artist’s father passed down the generational talent that is prominent and evident in his works today. Currently a Capetonian, Smit is best known for his contemporary portraiture of Cape Malay women which is executed through monumental canvasses and bronze sculptured heads of the latter.

Smit has been exhibiting locally as well as internationally for nearly 10 years, and during that time managed to establish a substantial international following with collectors ranging from the Standard Chartered Bank to Laurence Graff Art Collection at Delaire Graff Wine Estate.

He is also currently considered one of South Africa’s youngest investment artists. Smit has added various awards behind his name, including the Viewer’s Choice Award at the National Portrait Gallery, as well as the ‘face’ of the BP Portrait Award in 2013. He was also honoured with a Ministerial Award from the Department of Culture for Visual Art, and a highlight of his career has been the publication of one of his paintings on the cover of Christie’s Auction Catalogue. He is currently exhibiting on art fairs in Amsterdam, Germany, India, Miami, Monaco, London and Hong Kong.

feet are still firmly on the ground. On a question referring to this very exhibition, he simply answers, “It is amazing. I am very fortunate. Over the last five years of being in London all of my exhibitions have sold out. I am very blessed.”

But what drives this master of art in reaching success after success? Firstly, his family.

Then, of course, also his true passion for creating pieces that are simply unique and exclusive, depicting and bringing life to an African culture that is so rich and full of life but so easily overlooked.

And his advice to aspiring artists? “If you can find only one thing that inspires you, something that makes you feel like you actually want to get out of bed in the morning, it is probably best to focus on that, and to do that as best you can. In today’s art world there are so many

artists and so many things, people get distracted. Artists always seem to be trying to find something that will blow everyone else away, forgetting about what it is they started off with and what blows them away as artists.”

Just like the world now has its eyes on “Lionel Smit, a young and very talented artist”, eyes will still be on “Lionel Smit, the old yet ever so talented and still inspiring artist” many years along the line. And it is fellow citizens like these who make the rest of us proudly South African all over again!

Does it make a difference if a winemaker grows up on the land which later in life he will nurture and till to produce exceptional wines? Does it make him more passionate, more at one with the earth?

Watching David Nieuwoudt of Cederberg Private Cellar walk through the vineyards on his farm Dwarsrivier in the unspoilt Cederberg, one would certainly say so.

‘One worries that his feet might sprout roots and his legs turn into the stem of a healthy vine if he lingers too long in one spot,’ one of the members of his team remarks in jest.

The origin of the farm dates back to the late 1800s. Five generations ago the family farmed sheep and later tobacco and fruit. Three generations ago that all changed when David’s grandfather introduced table grapes and wine vines. But it was when David took over the farm in 1997 and streamlined the business that the wine side really took off. Today David and his team run a successful wine and tourism enterprise and most of the farm is part of the Cederberg Conservancy.

To visit Cederberg Private Cellar one has to enter the Cederberg mountain range between the towns of Citrusdal and Clanwilliam via Algeria. Although the farm 126

is situated on an escarpment not far from the West Coast, it is far enough inland to be free from any coastal influences.

It is this cool climate and even temperatures throughout summer and winter that make for exceptional grapes.

Add to these cold nights and sunny days, fresh mountain water and, thanks to its relative isolation, one of the few virus-free environments in the world, and one has the basic ingredients for award-winning wines.

The other vital ingredients are the talent of the winemaker and the dedication of his team, qualities which seem to be present in abundance at Cederberg Private Cellar. Many of David’s wines have won ‘best in the world’ awards, but that is no reason for him to rest on his laurels. ‘All that means is: we have to work harder. And drink more wine,’ he says with a laugh. The main focus at Cederberg Private Cellar remains Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc on the white wine side and Cabernet and Shiraz on the red wine side. David also makes the Ghost Corner range from Elim near L’Agulhas, comprising five wines.

Upon meeting him in person, one is struck by David’s passion; a passion not only for his product, but for life itself; for making – and finding – the ultimate wine. Apart

from a strong work ethic he does not seem to hold any particular philosophy. ‘Visionary’, ‘innovative’, ‘warm’ – all these words would fit, as would ‘humble’ and ‘generous’.

But despite his humility, David has much to be proud of. There is the flourishing Sanddrif holiday resort and campsite on the banks of the Matjies River; the membership of the prestigious Cape Winemakers’ Guild; a deep commitment to nature conservation; direct efforts to uplift and support the local community; the new cleverly packaged craft beers, Boggom and Voertsek, which he makes with his colleague, Alex Nel; and his family.

Maybe growing up here, where the Cape mountain leopard and the black eagle roam, bred this kind of man – one who roams the world in the quest for the ultimate wine, but remains rooted in this fertile earth and produces these gorgeous wines.

The South African Wine Index, SAWi, was developed to reliably quantify the perceived quality and value of any given wine. In the years since it was first introduced, the Index has gained traction in South Africa as a reliable and accurate tool that accommodates the often-criticised vagaries of traditional wine competitions and represents an aspirational benchmark of quality.

The SAWi methodology compares and condenses results from 84 multinational competitions, reviews and listings, acknowledging the nature of the competition and additional accolades bestowed on a wine, and expresses this as a single number out of 100.

‘Grand Wines’ (or the French ‘Grand Vin’) are commonly regarded as the best a producer has to offer – showing a level of intellectual or emotional stimulation able to capture the consumer’s imagination and intrigue, if not delight, the palate. As such, a ‘Grand Wine’ is not restricted to

a particular area, style or wine-making philosophy, but rather simply stands ahead of its peers as a wine that exhibits the best on offer, in the best possible way.

Driven by a desire to highlight the exceptional nature of South African wines, SAWi considers ALL wines produced in South Africa, as long as they have a track record of three vintages or more. Wines that achieve an Index rating of 93 or higher are designated ‘South African Grand Wines’. The annual SAWi Wine Awards then further highlight the performance of a select group that exceed an Index rating of 95.

The result is not simply a list of great South African wines, but a collection that commands the attention of the world, being very close to the very best South Africa has to offer. The ‘South African Grand Wines Collection’ is undoubtedly as close to a complete and unbiased list of top achieving wines as it is possible to come.
