PROJECT NAME: SILO DEVELOPMENT V&A WATERFRONT Silo 3 + 4, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town Makeka Design Lab in joint venture with Van Der Merwe Miszewski Architects (VDMMA) have been appointed for the design of Silo 3 and 4, two mixed use buildings consisting of retail and high-end residential apartments. The buildings form part of the Silo District Developments surrounding the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) situated at the heart of the Precinct in the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. Silo Square will provide a gathering place and interface to the public realm. The buildings are scheduled for completion in 2017 and comprising of 75 apartments with uninterrupted harbour and mountain views. The development is set to achieve a minimum of 4 stars as a mixed use development.

Architecturally, No. 3 Silo was gracefully imagined as a collection of three cylindrical chambers echoing the Grain Silos to define and contain different areas of the building, keeping it personal and allowing for a multitude of unique apartment types. The spaces between these chambers house the vertical circulation for the building and provide spectacular views from the building, but are interesting elements in their own right and will have a very different character at night. The project includes the public realm integrating the circular plaza designed around the Grain Silo with a ring of public spaces nestled on the dockside of the working harbour, warehouses, cranes, hoists, gantries, shed, containers, ships and functional industrial archaeology.

Aesthetically House Somo is unashamedly contemporary and is a breath of fresh air between its conservative suburban neighbours. PROJECT NAME: HOUSE SOMO, Pinelands, Cape Town The client required their compact house in Pinelands, Cape Town to be enlarged and modernised in order to accommodate a growing family. The strategy was to open up the ground floor in order to connect the front garden with the back and to add a second storey that would capitalize on a previously unexplored view towards Table Mountain. The existing structural rhythm of the house suggested the development of four parallel zones or ‘tubes’ of space. These tubes were linked by a continuous passage bisecting it, and were developed three dimensionally to provide different ceiling heights as the spaces dictated. It also set up the parameters for the development of the external spaces and landscaping.

The ground floor houses all the entertainment spaces, whilst the first floor consists of bedrooms. A double volume entrance hall functions as the hub and all circulation revolves around and through it. The first floor passage cutting through the volumes also creates opportunities for natural light and transforms it into a gallery-type space. A roof garden creates an external space for the bedrooms and frames the view. Pieter Brundyn, CEO of In Residence appears to have property in his DNA. Many years ago, he cut his hospitality teeth at a Chateau in France and currently manages over 50 high end properties in Cape Town.

When Sir Francis Drake sailed into Table Bay he said, ‘This cape is the most stately thing and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth.” Little has changed. Except that a very astute entrepreneur has used his talents and a professional team to create a haven of luxury accommodation along the most prestigious real estate in South Africa, the Atlantic seaboard.’ Pieter Brundyn, CEO of In Residence appears to have property in his DNA. Many years ago, he cut his hospitality teeth at a Chateau in France and currently manages over 50 high end properties in Cape Town. From renovations, design, villa management, day to day rentals and concierge services – he has unmatched expertise and experience in this premium market. Pieter is adamant though that his core business is short and long terms rentals at all levels. Although he could be called a ‘serial entrepreneur’ Pieter has the business acu-

men to focus on what he does best. He saw a niche in the market for providing a full service to owners of high end villas and homes and the guests who stay in them. The piece de resistance for In Residence is the minimally invasive but personalised service. He maintains you have to exceed the expectations of the sector, dubbed ‘LSM astronauts,’ a market already au fait with sumptuousness. ‘They live it, drive it and travel it. They fine dine, know their Chateau Palmer from their Chateau Mouton Rothschild, their Girard-Perregaux from their Franck Muller and keep Viglietti Motors afloat. Discerning doesn’t even begin to cover it’. Although his portfolio of properties are masterpieces of architecture and design, appointed by top interior decorators and epitomise sublime luxury, it’s no use simply throwing designer fixtures and fittings at them, service is the defining factor.

Apart from service it is the company’s reputation for integrity and transparency that has him managing the top 50 prime properties in Cape Town. ‘It often starts with an owner approaching me to oversee their renovations. We consult with various architects, there is no one size fits all and I don’t have a favourite architect for projects. The properties are unique – they need different nuances and these can only come from a tailored approach. Each renovation is done on merit and the perfect fit found. This applies to interior design too. . Trust is pivotal in all our business dealings. We pass on any discounts and always supplies documentary proof of all expenses, to accommodate owners checking the accounts. ‘We work closely with each owner and offer advice from the quality of mattresses and linen to the range of glasses which need to be purchased. ‘ The BBC rated Cape Town as one of the top 50 places you should visit before you die. Judging by In Residence’s clientele, it appears that Pieter’s portfolio is likely to be voted as the top 50 properties to stay in in the Mother

City. After all, the Atlantic Seaboard is the most sought after real estate in South Africa. This stretch boasts dazzling blue flag beaches, world class restaurants, bars, bistros, coffee shops and accommodation – a playground for locals and tourists alike - with some of the most stunning views in the Western Cape. Although there is a housekeeper at each villa, in order to control the level of catering and service Pieter prefers his tenants to make use of the butler and chef service. ‘That way, we like to control the outcome of the experience for the guest’ In Residence ensures that you’re able to make the most of your stay in one of the most sought after tourist destinations. After all, they believe that it’s there to be enjoyed to the full. That life should be effortless. What’s not to like? Inresidence sales@inresidence.co.za www.inresidence.co.za

The Lanesborough is London’s finest residence and one of the city’s most iconic hotels.

The Lanesborough, the latest masterpiece hotel of Oetker Collection, reopened its doors in 2015 following an extensive 18-month renovation project by late interior designer Alberto Pinto. Located just moments from Knightsbridge, Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park, The Lanesborough is London’s finest residence and one of the city’s most iconic hotels. The new hotel emulates the style and impeccable service of its French sister Le Bristol while staying true to the hotel’s strong British roots. Having closed its doors on 20th December 2013, the Grade II* listed building was taken back to its shell and has been totally transformed by Cabinet Alberto Pinto. The renovation honours the building’s architectural heritage as one of London’s most revered Regency landmarks. The hotel comprises 93 rooms and suites including The Royal Suite, which extends to seven bedrooms. Executive Chef Florian Favario oversees The Lanesborough’s restaurant, Céleste, hailing a new culinary era for

the hotel. Strengthening the relationship with Le Bristol, Favario is the former Head Chef of Le Bristol’s threeMichelin starred restaurant Epicure where he worked under the world-renowned Eric Frechon, who acts as a consultant for Céleste. French inspired, the cuisine is modern and imaginative, using only the best of British ingredients. Daily afternoon tea is a traditionally British affair, with a Tea Sommelier on hand to guide guests through an extensive tea menu. To add to the extensive services offered to all guests, 23 private butlers are on call day and night to care for the individual needs of every guest, while a fleet of 14 luxury cars including a Rolls Royce Phantom can chauffeur residents around London in impeccable style. Each one of The Lanesborough’s seven new private dining rooms possesses a character and atmosphere of its own - from the intimate feel of The Wine Cellar to the palatial setting of The Belgravia.

Leisure

Particular focus has been paid to the ceilings through restoring original detailing such as ceiling roses, coffering, cornicing and fresco painting. Award-winning British artisans in plaster produced a unique plasterwork design for each room upon Cabinet Alberto Pinto’s request and control. 2,100 books of 23 ¼ carat gold leaf were used to elaborately dress the ceilings of public areas and guest rooms, reimagining the Regency period and reflecting the heritage of the building. The majority of suppliers used for the renovation are British with over 95% made bespoke for The Lanesborough. Every trimming and finishing is made to measure, before going through specialist procedures to meet hotel safety standards. The Royal Suite has been reinstated as The Lanesborough’s largest suite, extending across 4485 square feet, with seven bedrooms and bathrooms, two living rooms and a dining room exuding exquisite taste, impeccable British craftsmanship and attention to period detail. The Lanesborough Suite carries every hallmark of its distinguished designer, with four bedrooms and five bathrooms, two living rooms and a dining room as well as a kitchen and private entrance for the butler.

Cabinet Alberto Pinto imagined guest rooms being grouped into five design schemes, reflecting the Regency period, with each group consisting of three rich jewel colour ways to create warmth, harmony and comfort. 14 different types of bed canopies hang within the rooms, with over 3 million hand stitches and bespoke tailoring using the highest quality fabrics. Each marble block for the new bathrooms was individually chosen and acute attention was given to ensure that each slab was perfectly book matched. World-renowned British perfumer Roja Dove has created bespoke fragrances and bathroom amenities for every guest room. The Lanesborough is recognised as a building of special architectural and historic interest with a Grade II* listed status. ReardonSmith acted as Lead Design Consultant and Architect with responsibility for coordinating the renovation of the hotel in close collaboration with the interior designer, Cabinet Alberto Pinto. www.oetkercollection.com www.lanesborough.com

A Stitch in Time is a collaboration between designer Vanessa Gounden, artist Amita Makan and Reach for Recovery, a vital breast cancer support group. These are three very different sectors – fashion, visual arts and care – and their partnership establishes a model that sees these three international practitioners work together to bring about positive, meaningful and proactive change. For the collaboration, Makan produced a series of artworks in fabric, a decision she writes is based on the fact that “Fabric is reminiscent of skin – sensual, porous, and vulnerable to time,” and further that “The art-making process combined with the repetitive act of cutting threads, fabrics, and obsessive stitching have strong associations to the disease of breast cancer.” Her use of cotton gauze and silk threads provide further association with surgical suturing. Makan’s artworks form three groups: Waiting, Ravaged Butterflies and Links and Chains. Together these provide a narrative, which in many ways becomes the account of all women who experience this form of pain. Makan’s chronicle provides the conceptual inspiration and visual reference for Vanessa Gounden’s range of garment designs. Using digital tools, Gounden reinterprets Makan’s works as prints on garments and, in this way, these narratives literally become wearable art.

In the same way that the breast is the bodily symbol for the feminine, the dress is its material signifier. It is these two symbols – the breast and the dress – that Gounden combines to create a series of garments that tell of the anxiety, anguish and fear of waiting, followed by stories of pain and loss, and finally emblems of hope, recovery, strength and survival. In the sector of fashion, this is often where the narrative would end, but Gounden increases the agency of her work by collaborating with Reach for Recovery. This organisation provides the stimulus for Gounden’s work and, in return, Gounden’s work provides the means by which Reach for Recovery increases its efficacy, to render real and significant support to women who experience the trauma of breast cancer. Signature Luxury Vanessa combines original artworks and photography to create highly individual and contemporary prints. Her work is easily distinguished by its meticulous attention to detail and luxurious fabrics. Also signature to the brand and present in every collection is the Vanessa Trench, a coat dress cut to a strong classic feminine silhouette. Couture Atelier Vanessa Gounden also offers limited edition pieces and a bespoke service for individual clients To be worn with attitude. Travellers are offered the opportunity to enjoy a taste of local history together with a touch of modern, eclectic sophistication.

At Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa, one of Johannesburg’s first five star boutique hotels, travellers are offered the opportunity to enjoy a taste of local history together with a touch of modern, eclectic sophistication. This is something which is as much a part of South Africa’s rich heritage as the celebrated architect Sir Herbert Baker’s buildings and monuments. History of a Grand Dame

Originally part of the Oppenheimer Estate, the centrally situated Sandton property was bought 25 years ago during the rush for commercial space. At the time, land in Sandton, Rosebank and Parktown was cheaper than that in the Johannesburg CBD (Central Business District). However, for many land owners, it provided the perfect opportunity to establish country-like residences on vast

expanses of previously uninhabited land. Michael Kewley, Managing Director of Fairlawns, believes the property’s history and transformation over the last 19 years, has set the scene for a truly unique African experience. Not only are guests given a taste of true local history and culture, but they are also privy to all the amenities the modern traveller requires. “Fairlawns was originally a ten acre property owned by the Little Brenthurst Trust of Oppenheimer fame. Considering the massive developments in Sandton over the past two decades, it is hard to believe that the original property was home to horses, a cow, and various other animals. “When the decision was made to build a country hotel, the original homestead became the public areas and great

care was taken to retain as many of the magnificent trees as possible. And while the property is now only five acres, it still exudes a park-like ambience with huge trees and prolific birdlife. Guests often find it hard to believe that they are in the bustling heart of one of Africa’s richest square miles,” he comments. Following its opening in November 1997, Kewley recounts its phenomenal growth, having increased its staff complement of thirteen to over on hundred today. “In terms of the hotel buildings, there were originally only a mere twelve suites, otherwise known as the Courtyard Suites, as they were situated around a formal garden. And while the current forty upscale suites are individually decorated in varying themes, ranging from Eastern influence to French provincial, every effort has been made to retain the original charm of the historic buildings. The twenty suites in the Chateau Wing have in fact been built to green standards,” he says. Surrounded by New York-style skyscrapers, lavish residences, and towering shopping malls, Kewley says it is

the tranquillity of the private rolling gardens and majestic age-old trees, amongst many reasons, which sets Fairlawns apart. In addition to luxurious accommodation and world-class service, Kewley says they have endeavoured to retain the five-star hotel’s well renowned culinary reputation throughout the ages. “South Africa is blessed with a number of varied climatic regions, allowing us access to some of the finest meat, fish and fresh produce in the world. To ensure guests truly escape the hustle and bustle of the city, the award-winning Balinese-style Spa at Fairlawns is an experience, Kewley says, that is not to be missed. “Thanks to our extensive grounds we have been able to create a haven of tranquillity by creating a luxury spa set in a bamboo forest garden. Here guests have access to five indoor treatment rooms, three outdoor treatment salas, outdoor bath therapy, as well as a Chinese tea daybed, to take care of all their relaxation and wellness needs.

ICONIC TIMEPIECE

CLE DE CARTIER A Spirit of Innovation

A SIMPLE CURVE

A cartier timepiece is always a work in three dimensions, A quasi-architectural exercise. The maison has Tradi tionally placed great emphasis on the volumetric Qualities of its designs, creating models characterized By strong lines and distinctive forms. Clé de cartier is No exception. In one graceful swoop, it introduces a new Element into the maison’s watchmaking vocabulary: the Tightly-drawn curve. In profile, it is arched, streamlined And sleek, organic and ergonomic. Its sensual shape fits Snugly to the wrist, providing ease and congeniality to The wearer. In true cartier style, it feels as good as it Looks. Perfectly poised to one side, the element that gives The new model its name: its jewel-like, key-like crown.

A SIMPLE REVOLUTION

RE-THINKING A SIMPLE SHAPE

For the conception of clé de cartier, the challenge was Clear: to create a new form based on a perfect circle. A task that may at first appear effortless. But, what Seems straightforward is often deceptively so. The Result is a feat of subtlety and restraint. Shapes are Pared down and reduced to their essence. Everything is A question of precision, balance and proportion. Great Mastery was employed to create a seamless flow, an Elegant economy and a harmonious whole. Sharp edges Were eliminated. The bezel is gently rounded, the horns Smoothly tapered. Each component unites to conjure Up an intangible perfection that is at once surprising, Intuitive and universal. It is as it should be, as if it were Always meant to exist.

Cartier has a rich history of creating innovative crowns And clé de cartier firmly upholds that heritage. This Time, it is not only one of the watch’s most distinctive Features, but also the inspiration for its name. ‘Clé’ in French means key, and the crown’s resemblance to one Is unmistakable. The act of resetting the time and date Introduces a new gesture to the world of watchmaking —One that recalls the traditional turning of a key to Wind up a clock. Its sizeable dimensions make the crown Remarkably easy to handle. But, functionality is not Its sole asset. It is also an exquisite object in its Ownright. Elongated and pure, it is adorned with a Sapphire that is not set in a classical manner. Instead, It is ingeniously inserted to remain flush with the metal Surrounding it.

At the tender age of 14 Ashish j. Thakkar found himself with his family in Kampala Uganda, having been made refugees after the Rwandan genocide two years after moving to Rwanda from the UK. Life for Ashish was everything, but a bed of roses, resilient in his pursuit of marking out his territory saw the tenacious youngster selling computer to friends and families to remain buoyant by the pressure of his then, unfavorable circumstances. Disadvantage was nothing more than a catalyst for this nomad lion to run his own pride. From a small IT business in Uganda to the globally recognized multi-sector investment group that exists today. Through its investments, Mara Group now has a presence across 25 African countries in sectors spanning technology, financial services, infrastructure and real estate. Ashish continues to drive the business development and strategy of Mara. Ashish is passionate about enabling, empowering and inspiring entrepreneurs. Consequently, in 2009, he founded the Mara Foundation to foster and support emerging entrepreneurs through mentorship and venture philanthropy. In 2012, Ashish was appointed a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in recognition of his success and leadership in driving social and economic change in Africa. Ashish advises several heads of state in Sub-Saharan Africa and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Africa. In 2015, Ashish was appointed Chair of the United Nations Foundation’s Global Entrepreneurs Council. At Mara their core purpose is to be game changers in all they apply themselves to, with a positive social impact. Do Good and Do Well, famously uttered by Ashish j Thakkar, attached by these core values. “Our business practices are shaped by a firm belief in doing good whilst doing well. We believe in strategic partnerships that bring together global companies with subject matter expertise and our deep local understanding in building sustainable businesses in Africa. Smart partnerships is key to our growth. While we operate within a robust institutional framework, we put a strong emphasis on cultivating an entrepreneurial culture in everything we do.” Celebrating 20 years success as a group within a global landscape across the various industries namely Banking, Real Estate, Technology and Infrastructure, Ashish believes the tipping point is now. “Dreaming big, but starting small.” perfectly stated by Ashish whereby Mara Mentor was created as platform

““Dreaming big, but starting small.” perfectly stated by Ashish whereby Mara Mentor was created as platform for young entrepreneurs to engage other entrepreneurs through its complimentary mobile platform for young entrepreneurs to engage other entrepreneurs through its complimentary mobile platform, addresses the first major issue with informal education with regards to entrepreneurship, on the basis that unemployment is a global issue, but youth unemployment is an Africa issue. Second issue would be “Access to Capital” Extremely passionate about the continent and the vast potential it could manifest when guided correctly, Atlas Mara’s operating model, drives their business forward and helps create opportunity for Africa. Ashish J Thakkar Global Entrepreneurship Index tackles third Issue head on “Public Policy”

Which are based on 5 broad pillars, each containing between three and seven indices. These indices were sourced from a variety of sources such as United Nations and World Trade Organisation statistics. The 5 pillars aim to give a balance of physical barriers to entrepreneurship such as poor infrastructure, government policies preventing entrepreneurship and also assessing the entrepreneurial environment. From humble nomadic beginnings to one of the forerunners across industries, this lion has truly become a remarkable leader of a global pride, ring fencing his territory with one primary object to influence tomorrow today.

According to Greg Zeleny, Managing Director and founder of Cape Town’s first underground restaurant, Spasie, the idea for this exclusive chef-led dining experience was born from a desire to give chef’s a platform for creativity and expression in order to showcase their culinary talents in an unconventional and memorable manner. Offering a full-on gourmet experience, Spasie is an elite underground culinary retreat that ventures far from the everyday food experiences we have come to associate with regular established restaurants. “Spasie was formed out of the passion and drive people have around food and the willingness to venture out. It also gave us the opportunity to work with some of Cape Town’s top chefs and young rising stars without boundaries or restrictions on their talents,” explains Zeleny. Situated in the prime locale of Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, Spasie allows a different local chef to take over the menu

each week for two nights only. “It’s a magical place; a blank canvas for a chef to step in and create a custom menu,” explains Zeleny. It’s a revolutionary concept in Cape Town’s culinary scene where local talent can experiment with food, “pouring their hearts and souls on to plates,” and then explaining to their select group of guests why they cooked what they did. “Of course, it helps that the space — the actual physical space — is a stunning, rustic venue that adds to the intrigue and the allure of the evening but I think the most important piece of the puzzle is the interaction with the chefs,” he adds. This makes for a unique and memorable culinary experience. Some guests have explained that Spasie is quite difficult to locate amid the bustle of Cape Town’s city centre but perhaps this adds to the mystery and allure of the restaurant. “We tend to focus more on the food, wine and our own little slice of heaven than what’s happening outside,” explains Zeleny.

During the years they developed the idea of owning an own lodge, and after a trip with the whole family they discovered in 2003 the beauty Madikwe Game Reserve. Ed and Anka Zeeman fell in love with the African continent on their first trip to Kenya in 1991. Since then they returned on a regular basis as an African safari was their prime way to escape from their busy business activities. During the years they developed the idea of owning an own lodge, and after a trip with the whole family they discovered in 2003 the beauty Madikwe Game Reserve. Wild enough but still well positioned with Johannesburg (airport, medical facilities etc) on a easy distance. After their first visit they came back in 2004 and bought the land – at that moment – adjacent to the Madikwe Game Reserve with advance plans to incorporate the land in the Park. That happened. During 2004 they consulted architect Nick Plewman, to build their lodge and they worked out the Morukuru concept. Rather than a conventional main

building with separate bedrooms, they decided to build 2 safari villa’s with the bedrooms connected to the house. The Riverhouse (3 bedroom house) and Owners House (2 bedroom house) were built during 2005 and the opening was in October 2005. After the sale of his company Ed decided to focus more on their African lodge and plan for a 3rd 5 bedroom villa were made. This Farmhouse was built during 2009. During their activities in Madikwe Ed and Anka got involved in the development of hospitality facilities in De Hoop Nature Reserve. In 2012 they decided to build the 4 bedroom Morukuru Ocean House on the ocean front in the park. Soon they will start with the building of the Morukuru Beach Lodge, with 5 beachfront hotelrooms, on the location of the ruins of the burnt down Koppie Alleen

cottage. During 2013 they also had the opportunity to acquire AtholPlace Hotel & Villa in Sandton/Johannesburg. After a revamp of the hotel and redevelopment of the next door villa, the hotel was reopened early 2014.

MORUKURU MADIKWE It offers the privacy of home with the comfort of a hotel. ‘We find that guests with children relax alot more if their children can play freely without them worrying that they may disturb other guests, comments Andrew John Linton, the General Manager. In that way its setup is ideal for family groups–and different tomost other lodges in that it’s designed as a self-contained villa with rooms inside, which gives it a home away from home feeling. Having the space all to yourself is much more conducive to relaxation and with the added luxury of having your own private guide, tracker, host, chef and butler.

The year 2017 has special significance for the La Motte Museum as it marks 60 years since the death of JH Pierneef (1886-1957) as well as the 90th birthday celebration of his daughter Marita, who is a friend of La Motte and the provenance of the museum’s permanent Pierneef collection.

At La Motte Wine Estate, both the conservation of art heritage and sharing art with an audience wider than private collectors, are priority. Since the opening of the La Motte Museum in 2010, guests to this Franschhoek estate had the rare privilege of enjoying a variety of unique art exhibitions that included amongst others celebrated South African female artists, winners from the acclaimed Helgaard Steyn Awards and tapestries of famous French artist, Jean Lurçat, to name but a few. The highlight of the estate’s art offering lies, however, in the permanent exhibition of 44 original works by JH Pierneef that was acquired from his daughter’s private collection. For 2017, the estate is building on the Pierneef theme with a new exhibition – A Tribute to the life and work of Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886-1957). The exhibition that will run for the duration of 2017, celebrates the artist’s contribution to South African art and enhances the existing exhibition with selected artworks and personal artefacts from various collections in South Africa.

La Motte’s association with the art of Pierneef dates back to early 2002, with the creation of the estate’s premium Pierneef Wine Collection. Ever since, Pierneef’s love for that which is truly South African, as well as his passion for his art are echoed in more than just the name of this wine collection and the estate’s Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant. There is also a strong synergy between La Motte and Pierneef with reference to a love for the South African landscape and nature as well as an interest in the preservation of architecture.
