Kalashnikov to unveil PPK-20 submachine gun for pilots

or the first time, at the International Military-Technical Forum, “ARMY2021” in Moscow, Kalashnikov Group will unveil a prototype of the 9 mm submachine gun PPK-20. New submachine gun was independently

designed as a part of “Vityaz-MO” R&D project.

The PPK-20 has completed state trials, and is

now awaiting the final decision of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation in regards to adoption by the Armed Forces.

The PPK-20 was significantly modified to make it more compact, and now it is under consideration to become a new weapon system in the pilot’s personal survival kit for the Russian Aerospace Forces.

The PPK-20 tests carried out at the RF MOD State Flight Test Centre in Aktyubinsk, confirmed that it could be placed in an ejection seat; tests are continuing to assess the effectiveness of the changes made. If the trials are successful, Kalashnikov Group is ready to start production of the PPK-20, which also has significant export potential.

The PPK-20 can also serve as PDW (Personal Defence Weapon), a firearm for combat vehicle crews or various support units, and for Special Forces units that operate in urban areas, inside structures and vehicles, and in crowded environments.

The length of the PPK-20 with the folded butt stock is only 41 cm. The trials showed that when 7N21 ammunition is used, PPK-20 could penetrate Level 3A body armour (NIJ standard).

With this round, the muzzle velocity of the PPK20 is nearly 470 m/s, and the point blank range at a full-height target is 360 m.

Army 2021 Opens, Latest Russian Defence Technologies on display

T

he 7th International Military-Technical Forum “Army-2021” opened at the Patriot Expo, Kubinka Air Base and Alabino Military Training Grounds in Moscow. All major technological advancements made by the Russian Defence Industries are in display with foreign exhibitors.

Rosoboronexport, the major exhibitor of the show will exhibit the latest cuttingedge technologies in the defence and armament sector and sign a few defence contracts at the show.

Rosoboronexport will hold public presentations of modern Russian security equipment, clothing and gear for special forces and police units in Russian and English. The event is supported by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation.

New Mi-171SH Storm arrived under its own power from Ulan-Ude The upgraded Mi-171Sh Storm military transport helicopter arrived under its own power from Ulan-Ude aviation plant of ‘’Russian Helicopters’’ (Rostec State Corporation) at the international military-technical forum “Army-2021”. The five thousand kilometers flight took five days.

“The multifunctional special forces helicopter has become a breakthrough product in UlanUde Aviation Plant’s lineup. It embodies several solutions that significantly increase its combat effectiveness and survivability,” says Alexey Kozlov, managing director of Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant. – Crew members, maintenance personnel and landing group commanders gave their suggestions on how to improve aircraft. The

main task has been to provide security for all participants of the operation.

The Mi-171Sh Storm helicopter is specially designed to carry out counter-terrorism missions by special forces. The helicopter is equipped with “high-altitude” increased power engines, a new rotor system with an improved profile composite main rotor and X-shaped tail rotor, an integrated flight and navigation system, and most importantly - an improved composition of weapons and defense systems.

Improving crew and trooper safety was one of the key goals of the upgrade. That is why the Mi-171Sh Storm has improved armor protection on the fuselage, which guarantees mission performance even in fire resistance

counteraction. In particular, the onboard defense system provides enhanced survivability and protection. The onboard defense system (ODS) can detect antiaircraft missile launches and jam portable anti-aircraft missile systems (MANPADS).

The innovation can detect missile launches with infrared and thermal homing heads and knock them off course with jammers and decoys. ODS can also detect enemy radars, determine their irradiate direction, the type of radar, and its operation mode.

The onboard defense system has an innovative feature to instantly display aerosol smoke screens to cover up the loading and unloading of troops. This will protect from, among other things, detection by thermal imaging devices.

Combined titanium and aramid armor helicopter’s protection and other structural measures also increase combat endurance and safety. The troops in the cargo cabin, as well as the most important components and crew protected by armor. For troops protection, the cargo cabin floor is fully covered with removable lightweight kevlar armor. The same armor is installed along with the port and starboard side up to the level of the portholes. The Mi-171Sh Storm provides energy-absorbing landing seats for “hard landing”, which improves the survival of troops. With two sliding doors and additional hatches, the Mi-171Sh Storm’s troops landing capabilities have been significantly expanded.

To reduce military equipment visibility specialized pixel helicopter coloring is designed - four-color “digital” camouflage.

Large-caliber machine guns “Kord” (caliber 12.7 mm) has been installed to expand aviation weapons range. The aircraft is to be equipped with a modern observation optoelectronic station, including TV and thermal imaging channels, as well as a laser rangefinder. Along with small arms and gun machines, unguided rockets and bombs of various calibers, the helicopter is also equipped with a guided missile system including sighting and targeting system, which allows to fight against air and ground targets, destroy enemy’s fire points and armored vehicles.

“Russian Helicopters’’ presented helicopter cockpit of the future at the forum “Army-2021 ‘’Russian Helicopters’’ Holding (part of the Rostec State Corporation) at the International Military-Technical Forum “Army-2021” presented a moke-up cabin of advanced Russian helicopters made following modern requirements for ergonomics and functionality. This mock-up will allow mastering several technologies at once, including the use of sensory “glass cockpit” application, forecasting system and pilot’s decision-making support and so on.

he ergonomic cockpit mock-up research work is aimed for flight safety improvement, as well as reliability and efficiency of helicopter crews. The information and control field of the future helicopter cockpit is formed in such a way as to reduce the crew’s psychophysical and intellectual workload while in flight, as well as to maintain its full situational awareness.

“We have set ourselves a task, in cooperation with leading research centers and domestic avionics manufacturers, to find optimal technical solutions that will allow us to build new principles of interaction between pilot and helicopter, reduce the load on the crew and human factor influence, and significantly

improve flight safety. Onboard avionics equipment development will seriously change the face of modern helicopters soon, and I am confident that this research work will allow us to take the lead in these changes,” said Andrey Boginsky, CEO of “Russian Helicopters”.

In the research and development process of future cockpit mock-up, several concepts and technologies will be tested. In particular, the demonstrator will explore the use of a “glass cockpit” with indication and control modern features on a single working field of a sensor dashboard. Another area of research will be intelligent crew support system application with interactive forecasting algorithms, optimal control problems solving, support system decision, space-time flight path construction optimization, including for high-precision flights in artificial obstacle conditions.

In addition, the future cabin will explore the optimal automation concept, which involves a “virtual pilot” introduction and rational functions distribution between him and the crew. The mockup will also be used to test the concept of applying augmented reality elements with a “synthetic vision” system implementation, based on information compilation from various onboard sensors and systems.

The cockpit mock-up was commissioned by Russian Helicopters on behalf of broad cooperation of avionics equipment developers and manufacturers, which includes “Research and Testing Institute of Ergatic Systems” JSC, “Navigator” JSC, FGUP GosNIIAS and the Research Test Center of Aviation and Space Medicine and Military Ergonomics of the Central Research Institute of Air Force of the Defense Ministry. The expert organization for the project is the V.P. Chkalov State Flight Research Center of the Russian Ministry of Defense (GLITS MO RF).

UAC participates in the "Army-2021"

T

he United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC UAC, part of the Rostec State Corporation) is participating in the Army-2021 International MilitaryTechnical Forum. The UAC exposition is presented both at the UAC Demo Center on the territory of the Patriot Expo and at the Kubinka Air Base.

The UAC Demo Center presents a multimedia exposition and lines of combat, transport, strategic and special aircraft produced by the corporation’s companies with the models of the Su-57, Su-35, Su-34, MiG-31, MiG-35, MiG-29K, Su30SM, Yak-130, Il-78MK-90A, Il-76MD-90A, Tu-160, Tu-22M3, Tu-95MS, Be200, Yak-152. Interactive information panels working in the Demo Center will allow visitors to get acquainted with the characteristics of aircraft.

A significant amount of the model range of serially produced and modernized

by UAC companies’ aircraft are also represented at the Kubinka airfield as part of the static exposition. Among them - Su-57E, Su-24M, Su-34, Su-35S, MiG-35E, MiG-31BM, MiG-29SMT, Su-25SM3, MiG-29K, Tu-22M3, Tu-95MS, Tu-160 , A-50U, Il-78M, Su-30SM, Yak-130, Yak-152. In the forum’s flight program, the air performances of the Su-57, Su-35S, Su-30SM, Yak-130, Yak-152 and other aircraft manufactured by the UAC are planned.

Kalashnikov Group showcases Guided Missiles

T

he Kalashnikov Group and the cooperation companies are currently seeking the opportunities to apply the air-launched guided missile Vikhr-1 using various types of carriers. Such works are conducted to complete a major overhaul and modernization of the Mi-28N helicopters.

Similar works are also performed to enhance military capability of the Mi-28UB helicopters.

The possibility to adapt the Vikhr-1 guided missile to be used with the Mi-28NE and Mi35P helicopters is now being considered. The company is pursuing opportunities to use the Vikhr-1 guided missile with the Orion-E UAV. The Kalashnikov Group, in cooperation with the JSC KBP, is currently implementing R&D projects to modernize the Vikhr-1 guided missile and improve its specifications. The modernized Vikhr-1M missile will be used from Ka-52, Ka-52M as well as other carriers.

Indian Navy Ships Arrive at Guam to participate in Maritime Ex Malabar

ndian Naval Ships Shivalik and Kadmatt arrived at Guam, an Island Territory of the USA on 21 Aug 21 as part of their on-going deployment to nations in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean. The two ships are scheduled to participate in the annual Exercise MALABAR-21, between navies of Australia, India, Japan, and the USA. MALABAR series of maritime exercises commenced in 1992 as a bilateral INUSN exercise and has grown in stature over the years to include four prominent navies in the Pacific and Indian Ocean Region. As part of the Exercise, Vice Admiral AB Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command will have operational discussions with Rear Admiral Leonard C. “Butch” Dollaga, Commander CTF-74 focussing on developing an action plan and coordinated operations in the maritime domain. Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, Rear Admiral Tarun Sobti would be embarked onboard INS Shivalik during the conduct of Sea Phase commencing 26 Aug 21.

Exercise MALABAR-21 will be conducted with USN, JMSDF and RAN at sea from 26-29 August 21. The exercise will provide an opportunity for common minded navies to enhance inter-operability, gain from best practices and develop a common understanding of procedures for Maritime Security Operations.

MALABAR-21 would witness high-tempo exercises conducted between Destroyers’, Frigates, Corvettes, Submarines, Helicopters and Long-Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft of the participating navies. Complex surface, sub-surface and air operations including Live Weapon Firing Drills, Anti-Surface, Anti-Air and Anti-Submarine Warfare Drills, Joint Manoeuvres and Tactical exercises will be conducted during the exercise. The conduct of these exercises despite COVID restrictions is a testimony of synergy between the participating navies and commitment to safer seas.

The participating Indian Ships Shivalik and Kadmatt are the latest indigenously designed and built, multi-role Guided Missile Stealth Frigate and Anti-Submarine Corvette respectively and form part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam, Eastern Naval Command. INS Shivalik is commanded by Captain Kapil Mehta whilst INS Kadmatt is commanded by Commander RK Maharana.

The two ships are equipped with a versatile array of weapons and sensors, can carry multi-role helicopters and represent the growth of India’s warship building capabilities.

Russian Helicopters presents New products at Army 2021

R

ussian Helicopters, part of Rostec corporation presents few of its state of the art helicopters at the Army 2021 Expo in Moscow.

Among the exhibits, Mi-24P helicopter is a modification of the Mi-24V which reliability and versatility has been proved more than once. The Mi-24P (NATO classification name “Hind”) has inherited the fuselage and systems of Mi24V but a powerful 30-mm GSh-2-30 gun (ammunition load 450 rounds) has been installed instead of a flexible USPU-24 machine gun mount. The rotorcraft was produced both for the Soviet army and for export sales being designated as Mi35P. The combat application history of Mi-24/35 type helicopters includes over 30 military conflicts worldwide. Mi-24/35 type helicopters were the first Russianmade rotorcraft designed specifically for the combat operations. The design of the helicopter was such a success that its modified versions are still in operation.

In summer 2020 tests of the upgraded Mi-35P were over at NCHE NHC named after Mil and Kamov and Rostov Helicopter Plant and it went into serial production at Rostvertol PJSC. The updated Mi-35P features high standards of reliability, combat effectiveness and survivability, wide application possibilities.

Same as Mi-24P the aircraft can be used as a combat helicopter for destruction of tanks and other armored vehicles, as a troop-carrier for airlifting of 8 troopers, as an ambulance for transportation of two casualties and a medical attendant, and a cargo-carrier for transportation of cargoes inside the cargo cabin (1500 kg) and on external load sling (2400 kg).

Furthermore, a revived Phoenix has got new advantages.

The basic version of the upgraded Mi-35P has been provided with the following equipment: • upgraded round-the-clock surveillancesighting system with target detection (identification) range up to 10 (8) km; • new digital integrated flight system enhancing controllability and stability of the helicopter and resulting in automated piloting process; • up-to-date navigation and electronic indication complex with multi-functional color displays.

The armament system of the helicopter basic version includes 23-mm nose flexible gun mount, S-8 rockets, suspended gun containers housing 23-mm gun.

At the same time a renewed Mi-35P can incorporate a wide range of optional equipment and armament to meet the requirements of potential customers to expand the scope of combat missions.

It can be equipped with laser guided “air-toair” class missiles, bombing armament with up to 500 kg caliber, 122mm C-13 unguided rockets. Installation of 12,7 mm large-caliber machine gun is possible in cargo compartment.

Regarding helicopter airborne equipment, installation of laser defense system and short range navigation and instrument landing system is possible.

Thus, Russian Helicopters JSC introduces upgraded Mi-35P helicopter able to perform any combat missions depending on demands and budget of potential customers at transportcombat helicopters market.
