IS ENOUGH ENOUGH?

Let the man in the mirror answer that question

Quite a few years ago, a couple of us were talking with our pastor about how our church was going to fund the coming year.

It was a small church, membership was stagnant, dollars were hard to come by, and the two of us had been tapped to devise a plan to squeeze more blood from the same turnips, so to speak.

As these things tend to go at a church, the discussion turned to the “tithe” and whether talking about donating a specific percentage of members’ income was realistic, given our daily living expenses and the responsibilities we have to ourselves and to our families, much less to something or someone else.

The “how much” part was pretty clear, since 10 percent is the generally

referred-to magic number. But the “how much is enough” question was harder to answer.

And then the other guy threw the pastor a curve.

“Do I calculate my tithe before or after taxes?” he asked the pastor. “And which taxes count?”

He had a point: There are property taxes and sales taxes and gasoline

better parent or spouse.

We’re expected to break new ground in a new year, so it seems, and we generally give it a game effort for a week or two or three.

And then those eternal questions arise again: How much is enough? How much do I really need to do differently, and what difference will it really make?

Why can’t I just eat what I want? Do I really need that much exercise? Does my boss deserve my best effort? Can I be a better parent or spouse?

taxes and all kinds of other taxes, and surely we should get a “discount” for some of these taxes as part of the tithe equation.

And as it turns out, “how much is enough” is a question that never goes away, particularly this time of year.

If only there was a concrete answer to those questions, so you and I and everyone else could just get on with the business of doing what we need to do to live our lives correctly.

As it turns out, thinking back to how the pastor answered the guy’s tax-andtithe question that day, there is at least one take-it-to-the-bank answer.

“Well,” the pastor told us, clearing his throat and leaning forward ever so slightly.

Lake Highlands resident and former schoolteacher Caro L

Kent once served on the r ichardson ISD school board, but now she serves as our neighborhood’s state representative. Here she tells us what that’s like, and gives us a glimpse at her likes, interests and family.

What’s the most interesting job you’ve ever held?

I truly love teaching. From Baylor University to St. Edward’s University to Richland College — my 17 years in the classroom were extremely gratifying. Challenging students to change and grow academically; watching them gain confidence and knowledge; and then launching them onto higher levels of learning — this is what makes teaching truly rewarding.

Did your work teaching help prepare you for politics?

Yes. In many ways the skills of a valued teacher are the same as a good public servant. You have to have measurable objectives that are achievable through strong communication skills, collaboration with colleagues, and true concern for the needs of others. It’s also interesting to note that teachers frequently attest that they learn as much from their students as their students learn from them. In the same way, good elected public officials continuously learn from their constituents and constantly try to develop methods that better serve their community and state.

what do you like about living in l ake highlands?

the people. there’s a real “our town” — as in thornton wilder’s play — quality to lake highlands. we’re like a small town within a larger city — a close community where families come to live, raise their kids, and then send them out into the world. and because lake highlands has this strong sense of community, many of our children come right back to raise their own families, starting the entire cycle over again. i am always honored and humbled when the next generation comes home to work, to live, and to give back to our community. this is the lake highlands heritage we came here for the neighborhood and schools. My husband and i wanted our children to attend public school, and we realized that lake highlands would offer the type of academic opportunities and community experiences we sought.

are there any speCifiC issues now that neighbors seeM to be partiCularly Motivated about?

i know my constituents share a desire for excellent educational opportunities for their children — including public schools, post secondary training and higher education. economic development and providing tax relief for small business owners are also issues that stand out in lake highlands.

do you have any hobbies or outside-of-work aCtivities that you enJoy?

My dad instilled in me a passion for old cars — specifically Model “a” fords. i still have a ‘30 “a” that is great fun to drive in the neighborhood fourth of July parade and other area parades. it’s a two-seater with a rumble seat in the back and an old “ah-oo-gah” horn. one of my best memories is working

MILAREPA

$10-$15 Milarepa is the most beloved figure in Tibetan Buddhism, and he told his stories and taught his lessons in song. The 11th Century man was a real person, but his fantastic life story involves magic and myth. Playwrights Fred Curchack and Laura Jorgenson tell Milarepa’s stories of enlightenment through suffering with performances of their new play, “Milarepa”, at the Bath House Cultural Center. They use elements including music, lighting, dance and acting to tell the stories. The show is Curchack’s adaptation of two Tibetan texts, “The Life of Milarepa” and “100,000 Songs of Milarepa”. And it incorporates blues, rock and rap music. It’s not a somber show, says Curchack, who teaches at the University of Texas at Dallas. “It’s light-hearted and a lot of fun,” he says. OSBORNE SOLAZ ($10) SPAIN>

We are in mourning as we celebrate the Advocate annual Cheap Wine extravaganza and $10 Wine Osborne Solaz, the Spanish red blend that has stay of the Hall since its inception, is being fazed porate term is “selectively distributed in stores throughout U.S.,” but the reality is that the wine won’t be for stores where you used to buy it. (Osborne is replacing the Solaz with a brand called TempraTantrum; hopefully, it tastes better than the name.)

Otherwise, despite the weak dollar, 2009 was a banner year for cheap wine. The only other wines to drop out did so because the weak dollar pushed their prices above $10 — Falesco Vitiano, which produces a solid rosé, an even more solid white blend and a stunning red blend made of sangiovese, cabernet and merlot.

The Hall added five wines: A California chenin blanc from Vinum Cellars called CNW; Notorius, a white wine from Sicily; a red Rhone wine, La Ferme de Gicon; and vini merlot from Bulgaria, which may be the best cheap merlot I’ve ever tasted. Also, look for the 2007 Bota Box cabernet sauvingon, which at $5 a bottle, is a steal. I can’t, however, recommend any newer vintages.

Here’s the rest of this year’s Hall of Fame: and especially the petite sirah. the Spanish sparkling wine, which comes in brut (dry), extra dry (sweeter than brut) and rosé.

about $12 for a 1-liter box). which can be found for as little as $6. and especially the sauvignon blanc, from southern France.

New Year’s black-eyed peas

Eating black-eyed peas for New Year’s is a Southern tradition that is supposed to bring good luck. But you don’t have to settle for canned beans. Put this on the stove to simmer after lunch, check on it periodically, and you’ll have dinner without much effort. Serve this with your favorite $10 wine.

Serves 4, takes about 2.5 hours

1 lb dried black-eyed peas

1 onion, chopped

1 carrot, chopped

1 celery stalk, chopped

1/2 bell pepper, chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1. Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Add water to cover the beans by an inch or so.

2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmer, cover, and cook until beans are tender. This could take as little as an hour or as long as three or four hours, depending on the beans. You may also need to add water if the beans look dry.

ask the WINE GUY?

Q. WHAT IS THE AVERAGE PRICE OF A BOTTLE OF WINE?

A. A lot less than you think — about $6, according to Nielsen, which tracks U.S. retail wine sales. Most of the wine sold in the U.S. costs less than $10. —JEFF SIEGEL

THE IST

THE MEDIA PERPETUALLY FEEDS THE PUBLIC’S HUNGER FOR LISTS.

There are useful lists, such as Oprah’s “Top 10 Superfoods”, Time ’s “25 People to Blame for America’s Credit Crisis”, or Esquire ’s “Best Bars in America”. Then there are more gratuitous tabulations — Star magazine’s “Best and Worst Beach Bodies”, or The Enquirer ’s index of gay and not gay celebrities, for instance. Maybe it’s the order and brevity lists inject into our overwhelming lives, or that they make large quantities of information more digestible. Whatever the reason, the masses enjoy consuming info in the form of neat numbered and bulleted boxes, and the Advocate is here to oblige. In fact, we love lists so much that we’ve compiled a list of lists (sometimes useful, sometimes superfluous) for readers who can’t get enough of them.

The ultimate guide to those off-the-wall yet good-to-know finds in our neighborhood

Their personalities are so magnetic that they can’t carry credit cards. Their charm is so contagious that vaccines have been created for it. The grass is greener on whatever side of the fence they are on. They are

THE MOSTINTERESTING PEOPLE IN LAKE HIGHLANDS

1. MARYON VAN GILDER. In 1951, this clothing designer ran into a production snafu that left 100,000 pair of pants too short, and simultaneously started a clothing craze that is still with us today. “Thankfully, it occurred to me the pants would be excellent for bike riding because they wouldn’t get caught in the spokes,” Van Gilder says. “I told one of my assistants to go ahead and put in a hem, and we’d call them ‘pedal pushers’.” Hence, this neighborhood

2. CINDY CAUSEY This neighborhood novelist has documented her publishing journey on her blog at cucausey.blogspot.com. Her romances, such as “A Hot Time In Texas” and “Different Drummer”, carry quintessentially sexy covers, about which, judging by her blog posts, she has a sense of humor. “The cover for my new book is ready to go,” Causey writes on her blog. “Kinda hot and steamy, huh? Just like summer in Texas. It’s a little more serious than the actual book, but hey, erotica, suspense, mys-

3. BOBIDEN. The whole neighborhood was surprised when the gregarious Lake Highlands High School principal announced he was leaving his post after 32 years in public education (11 of them at LHHS). But retirement, for months later he took a sales job at Ebby Halliday, and last summer he signed on as the new teacher and assistant football coach at Bishop Lynch High School.

4. PETER SNELL. In New Zealand, the three-time gold winning Olympic runner holds the title “Athlete of the 20th Century”. There, he has his image on a postage stamp, a statue in his honor, his shoes on display in a museum, and he was recently named second on an annual New Zealand Reader’s Digest “Most Trusted Person” list. Here in our neighborhood, Snell enjoys relative anonymity. A Ph.D. now, he has turned his physical genius into

sor of medicine at the UT Southwestern medical center. His name still appears regularly in Running Times magazine.

5. STEVE PICKETT. The award-winning CBS 11 news reporter is always on the go, but takes time out for his favorite hobby, photography. “Photography is sort of my second passion,” he says. The nationally renowned journalist who has received accolades for reports on wars, education, race relations and crime also shoots weddings on the weekends, and says that if he weren’t a news reporter, he’d like to be a fashion photographer.

China has the Great Wall. Australia has the Barrier Reef. Lake Highlands also has a ... STRUCTURE THAT IS QUITE POSSIBLY VISIBLE FROM OUTER SPACE

When it comes to public restrooms, cleanliness is key, but we want to recognize those spots that do a little extra to make your visit comfortable, or at the very least, convenient.

Here are

PERFECTPLACES FOR A PIT STOP

1. NORTHPARK CENTER. It’s a well-guarded secret among women in the know: The best bathrooms at NorthPark are downstairs next to Cibus. Not only are these bathrooms clean, but they also never have a wait line, making them somewhere near the 99 percentile of mall bathrooms. And if you’re nursing or have kids in tow, there are private family-sized restrooms here, too, with tiny toilets for teeny tushies.

2. SCHLOTSKY’SNEAR DOCTORSHOSPITAL AT WHITE ROCK LAKE. This one gets points for being so conveniently placed near the trails of White Rock. (Green Spot’s outside-the-store stalls score points for convenience, too, but you’ll have to go inside to ask for a key.) Schlotsky’s is consistently clean, spacious, and it beats using the Port-aPotty across the way.

3. THE PORT-A-POTTY ACROSS THE WAY. Not as nice as Schlotsky’s, but when you’re running, walking or biking the trail, the Port-a-Potties along the trail behind Doctors Hospital, we suppose, beat using the bushes.

It’s carwash time. You start with the inside, dropping 50 or 75 cents into the vacuum cleaner slot and you’re off to the races. Vacuuming furiously, you move hurriedly from one side of the vehicle to the other when the hose gets hooked on a door — oh no! — wasting precious seconds. Will you finish before the time is up? Or will you need to drop another 75 cents on that one measly remaining floorboard? To better your odds of beating the car vacuum clock, we’ve checked out neighborhood carwashes, stopwatch in hand, to find...

QUIET CORNERS WHERE YOU CAN CRACK A BOOK

1. MOCKINGBIRD-PEAVY

OVERLOOK. It’s a simple little green space atop the Buckner overpass with a perfectly placed pavilion and one of the prettiest views in the city. Plop down at the picnic table and take in a fall afternoon and an entertaining magazine article. (Oh, and improvements at the accompanying playground are underway.)

2. HALF PRICE BOOKS. Try visiting your local boutique, trying on a dress, and then wearing it around the store for hours. Or going to your favorite grocery store, opening up a bag of chips, and consuming it right there. If you didn’t get thrown out, you’d at least be frowned upon. Not so at Half Price. At

Central Expressway, it’s perfectly acceptable to cozy up in a nook or cranny of the store with a book for as long as you wish.

This one is all about the unexpected. You are at a standby eatery and discover some item on the menu — something you did not intend to order — that throws you for a pleasant loop. For example, here are MENU ITEMS

1. MATCHA LATTE AT WHITE ROCK COFFEE. Most of us hang here for the live music, homey atmosphere, free WiFi and ready access to our favorite legal drug — everyone knows this coffee shop on Northwest Highway and Shoreview has the best java this side of Columbia. But we know a few coffee drinkers who have turned to tea after trying the rich, foamy and honey infused matcha tea latte hidden deep within the “other hot drinks” section the menu.

2. ARTICHOKE SALAD AT TONY’S PIZZA. We’d known well for many years that Tony’s was an entirely reliable joint when it came

to pizza, pasta and calzones, but it wasn’t until a recent diet effort that we discovered the artichoke salad on the menu. At $4.95, the robust salad is packed with lettuce, Italian ham, mozzarella (drop this if you’re doing the diet thing), black olives and artichoke hearts. The diets didn’t last, but we regularly return to this Northwest Highway and Ferndale restaurant for the salad.

3. INDIVIDUAL PIES AT CHUBBY’S. Connoisseurs of greasy breakfasts and home-style cooking turn to Chubby’s Family Restaurant on Northwest Highway at Jupiter for sausage, eggs and, arguably, the best chicken fried steak around, but others in the know go just for the individual pies that come in lemon, chocolate or coconut. Your Chubby’s meal will satisfy, but your sweet tooth will thank you when save a little room for this dessert.

BEST BIODIESEL AND GOURMET TACOS

Sure, there are probably a handful of places where you can fill up on gas and tacos in one stop, but the biodiesel and top-of-the-line taco options make Green Spot on Buckner near White Rock Lake a unique neighborhood commodity.

Waiting for the light to turn, the line to move or the mechanic to tell you the bad news — seems like we’re always waiting. Here are a couple of PLACES WHERE WAITING ISN’T SO BAD.

1. EAST LAKE VETERINARY HOSPITAL. Because the vets here treat so many types of small pets, it’s not unusual to have a bellied pig or a rare exotic bird waiting alongside you needless to say, this makes the wait interesting (especially if you have a curious Boxer in tow). And it doesn’t hurt that the waiting area on Northwest Highway near Audelia is clean and spacious and includes scattered hard-candy bowls for humans.

2. DR. T. BOBDAVIS’S OFFICE. This dentist who moonlights as a musician has in his Greenville and Royal waiting room a computer for kids, recliners and a piano — and if his schedule allows, he might even play you a tune.

2. d arvis patton. The Olympic track star says Lake Highlands coach Buzz Andrews was his mentor. “I’ve always known I was fast, but the first two years of high school, I was ineligible for sports due to grades,” Patton says. But early during Patton’s junior year, Andrews took the future Olympian under his wing. “Buzz was like, ‘Uh uh. 3. a nnie c lark. Last year, Lake Highlands resident Shannon Carlton started making and gifting diaper cakes for her friends who were expecting. The requests and referrals started rolling in, and in a matter of a few short months, The Zero Calorie Bakery was born. For those of you aren’t familiar with “diaper cakes” and started salivating at the mention of bakery, Carlton’s cakes don’t involve sugar, flour, baking powder, or any standard ingredients. Instead, think diapers, burp cloths, onesies and the like (thus, they’re zero calories). Carlton’s product line has expanded to include custom gift cakes and accessories for all occasions including wedding showers, birthdays, major holidays, football parties You name it, and Carlton can fashion some sort of gift cake for it. Extra! Extra!

Read all about the guys who say journalism and news reporting, as we know it, are dead

Reporter Manny Mendoza is faced with evidence that he is a member of a dying breed of journalists. Mark Birnbaum is a filmmaker specializing in probing documentaries about people and their plights.

When the two paired up on a project, it was a match made in media purgatory. Their movie, “Stop the Presses: The American Newspaper in Peril”, which examines the condition of the American newspaper business, garnered accolades and nationwide buzz after screening at the 2009 AFI Film Festival.

Loss of newspaper advertising dollars to the Internet might be a threat not only to the newspaper industry, but also to Americans’ quality of life, Mendoza says.

“‘Stop the Presses’ is about what is happening to print journalism. So much advertising has gone to the Internet that it has become difficult for newspapers to perform the kind of in-depth watchdog func-

tion, that protective function, that it has provided in the past,” explains Mendoza, a White Rock area resident. “The question that comes up in the movie is, ‘If newspapers are in trouble, is democracy in trouble?’”

Through interviews with reporters, editors, media critics, professors and readers, “Stop the Presses” documents the historic role of newspaper journalists as public watchdogs. The Washington Post’s Ben Bradlee and Anne Hull, the New York Times’ David Carr, The New Yorker’s Ken Auletta, Ed Asner, TV’s Lou Grant and former mayor Laura Miller, who once worked for the Morning News, are a few of those interviewed. Dallas Morning News execs don’t appear in the movie, which lays out the industry’s problems and explores possible solutions without ever drawing any real conclusions (“If we had the answers, we could retire,” Mendoza quips.)

Mendoza has worked at newspapers since 1979 when he was a copy boy at the Miami News He first met Birmbaum, a North Lake Highlands resident, while covering arts and entertainment for the Dallas Morning News. Along with many other Morning News staffers, Mendoza in 2007 accepted a voluntary severance offer from the paper, after working there for 14 years. Birnbaum had several friends in similar positions.

“I was drawn to their struggle. I thought it would make an interesting film,” Birnbaum says.

The movie made its American television debut on KERA last October, and American Public Television will distribute it nationally beginning in early 2010.

Mendoza and Birnbaum have made a few changes to the film since its inception, including changing the subtitle.

“We originally subtitled the film‘Death of the American Newspaper’,” says Birnbaum. “That seemed like hyperbole at the time, and we changed it. We could have stayed with the original title because, sadly, that’s what appears to be taking place.”

To back up his point, he reminds us that the Chicago Sun Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News all filed for bankruptcy protection this year, and that TheTribune Co. media group filed for bankruptcy in December 2008.

“New data by theProject for Excellence in Journalismshows that 10,000 journalists have been laid-off or bought-out since we concluded production of this project in 2008,” Birnbaum says. “That means some 14,000 journalists have lost their jobs nationally since 2001.”

As Birnbaum knew well and Mendoza learned quickly, making a documentary is no easy feat.

“It’s definitely a hard way to go. It’s a labor of love,” says Birnbaum, who has another film, “Champ: The Steve Mitchell Story” in release, as well as other projects in the works.

The sweet success of “Stop the Presses”, for Mendoza, is tempered with the film’s bitter foundation. After all, the newspaper biz is in his blood.

“I pick up and read the Dallas Morning News and the New York Times every day, but I realize that the price will continue to rise and it will become a luxury item.

The filmmakers also have updated numbers since the original screening, effectively hammering home their point.

“I love newspapers,” says Mendoza, who still freelances for the Morning News “If there was one out there who would hire me, I’d go in a minute.”

There’s more good news about housing prices in Lake Highlands. The final six months of 2009 were even better than the first six months, as measured by the fifth Advocate Home Price Snapshot, compiled with the help of Ron Burch at Coldwell Banker.

John Hamman, CPCU 8330 Abrams Rd., Suite 104 214-341-3050 john.hamman.lcjs@statefarm.com

It had one of only three zip codes, 75231, where the number of days a home spent on the market didn’t increase.

Elsewhere in the neighborhoods where we distribute magazines:

• In East Dallas and Lakewood, home prices increased 16 percent in 75223.

John Hamman, CPCU 8330 Abrams Rd., Suite 104 214-341-3050

john.hamman.lcjs@statefarm.com

That means Lake Highlands continues to lead the five neighborhoods where we publish magazines. Single-family home sale prices increased in three of our neighborhood’s four zip codes.

Jim Collins, CLU 11807 Preston Rd. 214-349-7455 jim.collins.bts5@statefarm.com

Meanwhile, the average sale price declined in 15 of the 22 zip codes where we publish magazines. That compares to 17 declines in the first six months of the year, and 14 declines in the 2008

Reginald W. Johnson 6333 E Mockingbird, Ste. 275 214-821-4242

reginald.johnson.coqr@statefarm.com

Prices declined in the remaining four zip codes, but most percentage drops were in the low single digits and not at the rates that showed up in the June numbers. The number of days a home spent on the market increased in all five East Dallas zip codes.

Jennifer Wilcox 9660 Audelia Rd., Suite 123 214-348-0480 www.jenniferwilcox.com

• Prices continued to decline in Preston Hollow, which had held its own in 2008. The biggest decline came in 75229, where home prices dropped 22 percent from their 2008 level.

numbers. (For this snapshot, we used sales figures through Nov. 30 reported to the North Texas Real Estate Information System. We compile the snapshot every six months. A chart with complete figures for all 22 zip codes is on our website at advocatemag.com/home_price_snapshot.) Overall, it looks as if the least expensive neighborhoods did the best.

• Far North Dallas was hit even harder, with prices declining in all seven zip codes in which we deliver.

Rob Braun 9601 White Rock Trail, Suite 214 214-343-1515 www.robbraun.net

That was true in Lake Highlands. The hikes weren’t much, mostly around one percentage point, but this is the third consecutive snapshot where Lake Highlands has done better than the norm.

• Oak Cliff rallied in the second part of the year, with prices increasing in three of the four areas where we deliver magazines. They had declined in three of four through the middle of the year.

tHe 12 HaBItS OF 2010

O NE YEAR TO A BETTER YOU

It takes 30 days to form a habit. So here are 12 habit-forming resolutions in the New Year with overt or covert spiritual character. Start one each month, and keep the previous ones going. By year’s end, you’ll have to introduce yourself to yourself.

January: Get healthy. Losing weight or getting in shape is almost always first on resolution lists. Diets don’t work long term; smaller portions do. Your motto: Eat less, move more. Even if you know your going to live forever in heaven, earth could use you a little longer and a little stronger.

February: Nurture romance. Valentine’s month makes this a natural. Even if you’re single and uninvolved, you can perk up your romantic soul. Read poetry, try a cool new place in town, and take a risk by initiating or stepping up a relationship (women can initiate, too). Imagination can change routine into romance.

March: Reach out. Spring brings new hope. Meet a neighbor. Find a community ministry to volunteer in. Ask forgiveness of someone you hurt, or offer it back to someone who hurt you.

a pril: Pay dues. You’ll file income tax returns mid-month and likely pay Uncle Sam. Do it carefully and cheerfully. Consider what you get for what you pay: national security, social security and subsidies of many kinds that underwrite our generally peaceable way of life. While you’re at it, pay all your bills on time to help your neighbors’ businesses.

May: Celebrate graduations. No matter how old or young you are, you know someone who is graduating from some level of school, military training or vocational preparation. Make sure they hear from you with a note or a gift or a party. Achievement should be praised. And if the graduate needs a job, marshal your contacts. Good time to make a calendar of birthdays and anniversaries to remember.

June: Grow something. Plant or join a community garden. Or just till a plot in your own yard. Vegetables or flowers, or both. Even a small potted indoor plant. Put your fingers in the dirt, and tend the soil. Learn patience and gratitude for nature’s mysteries and your place in it.

July: Wave flag. Go to a parade, install a flagpole on your front porch, buy a John Phillip Souza CD to play in your car, pray for the troops, send a care package to someone on the battlefield, read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution all the way through. Loving the world starts at home; it just doesn’t end there.

a ugust: Commit spiritually. Whatever your faith tradition, decide to practice it faithfully. As school routines begin for some, make Sunday school and worship non-negotiables in your schedule. Put God first this fall, and watch everything else fall into place.

September: Read books. As kids break open textbooks, read alongside if not along with them. A book a month is good nourishment for mind and soul. Consider alternating fiction and non-fiction. Include reading about your own faith or someone else’s. Your conversational life will improve.

October: Unclutter life. Before the cold of winter, clean out the closet of anything you haven’t worn in a year. To keep it unworn is to keep it from someone who would wear it. Deliver it to a benevolence organization. Same with knickknacks and doodads and treasures laid up where moths and rust corrupt.

November: Practice gratitude. Get a running start on Thanksgiving by writing a personal note each day to someone. Don’t let the art be lost on you. A handwritten note means more now that few do it. Being a grateful person grows out of doing acts of gratitude. Start with a prayer of thanks before each note.

d ecember: Give unexpectedly. Double tip your waitress. Double tithe to your congregation. Slip the mail carrier and hairdresser something extra. Overdo it with people you love. Defeat materialism by lavishing nonmaterial gifts of love such as acts of service.

Be it so resolved

THE COMPUTER COMPANY CALLED TO CONFIRM SHIPPING.

“And then I called Equifax, and then I called the police.”

The Victim: Tom Tansil

The Crime: Credit card abuse

Date: Thursday, Nov. 12

Time: 11:30 a.m.

Tom Tansil is a small businessman, repairing computers from his Merriman Park North home, with a few usually scattered throughout his house. He enjoys working for himself, and his website, computersolutions.com, brings him plenty of work. “I make computers work the way they’re supposed to,” he says.

Location: 8900 block of Gunnison

But on Nov. 12, Tansil was on the receiving end of a call about his own computer order.

“Hewlett-Packard called me to confirm my purchase and I was like, ‘I didn’t order anything from you,’” he says.

The company said someone had purchased a computer for $854 using his credit card. Tansil had actually ordered a small part from the company a few months earlier, but believes a site he used may not have been secure. Someone may have also gotten his credit card information another way. Immediately, he began damage control.

“That’s the only time I’ve used that credit card online,” he says. “HP called me, and I called the credit card company and canceled the card.

482,000 UNINSURED CARS AND TRUCKS IN DALLAS COUNTY

SOURCE: TEXASSURE, TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE

Hewlett-Packard canceled the order, and because of Tansil’s quick actions, there were no additional charges on the card. As added measures, Tansil put out fraud alerts on all his credit cards and pulled copies of his credit to review as well. Had the company not called him, the criminal may have gotten the computer and charged more items.

Lt. Gloria Perez with the Dallas Police Northeast Patrol Division says Tansil’s responses were exactly what residents should do if they are the victims of identity theft or credit card fraud. She recommends reporting fraud to authorities immediately, and notifying all banks and credit card companies.

“Check your credit report periodically from the three major credit bureaus,” she adds. “Identity theft is on the rise. It is very important to safeguard all personal information.”

Perez offers a few preventative measures: minimize personal information left in your wallet, purse or vehicle; check your mail daily; shred any documents with personal information including pre-approved credit card applications; be aware of telephone and internet solicitations seeking personal information; and lock financial documents, credit cards and blank checkbooks in your home. —

GENEROSITY UNDER FIRE

A TRAGIC EVENT BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN A GROUP OF NEIGHBORHOOD MOMS

The Moss Haven Moms group came together more than 20 years ago as a way for moms within the Moss Haven Elementary boundaries to get acquainted. These days, email allows any communication to be broadcast to the entire group.

Typical subject lines read: “Security Alert” (neighborhood-watch info), “Lost Dog”, “Found Dog” or “Painter Recommendation”.

On a Thursday morning this past November, Moss Haven Moms making a routine email check were surprised when they opened a message with the subject line “Romina Mulloy and Family”. The message, from Ashley Gomez, broke the news that a member of the group, along with her husband, Michael Levine, and 5-year-old son, Ariel, had perished the night before in a house fire.

The news set off a flurry of texts and emails among the moms. Some had known Romina, and some recognized her name only from the email list.

Everyone asked: “Is there anything we can do?”

By the next day, Kellee Kelton had set up a meal calendar for volunteers to provide meals for Romina’s mother, starting immediately.

The following Monday night, Jennifer

Eckert hosted a meeting at her home where the women organized their efforts. At the family’s request, Betty Reagan put together a slide show of family pictures, set to music, which she completed in time for funeral services later in the week. Romina’s uncle, Denny Mulloy, needed help organizing rides for relatives arriving at the airport; in response, Eckert asked for volunteers with SUVs and mini-vans.

Skye MacLaren coordinated thankyou dinners for the firefighters at the three stations that responded (Station 28 on Greenville, Station 29 on Shadow, and Station 57 on Audelia). Highland Park Café donated turkey, ham and salad. The Moss Haven Moms provided additional sides.

The day the news of the fire first circulated, the Moss Haven Moms began collecting cash donations, although it wasn’t clear where the cash might be needed. Soon Romina’s friends and family decided to set up a fund in her honor through the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association to award scholarships to young Hispanic women. The moms’ cash donations had found their purpose.

Sadly, Romina Mulloy will be missed by Julius Dorsey Elementary School, because her employer (Baker Botts LLP in Dallas) had adopted the school as a community project, with Romina as liaison. In Romina’s honor, Moss Haven Mom Jill Schuler headed up a book drive for the Dorsey Elementary Library. At press time, she had collected 50 children’s books along with cash donations.

“It’s amazing, because this is a tough

time of year,” Schuler says. “When people can’t give cash, they can give a book. The response has been great.”

Inevitably, the tragedy brought fire safety to the forefront of all of our minds. In response, Jeryn and Jay Laengrich hosted a fire safety and prevention event in their home just 10 days after the fire. They provided food and drink, and Dallas Fire & Rescue brought an ambulance and fire truck for kids to view and explore. Immediately after the meeting, Susan Clot de Broissia sent notes out to the whole group.

Although most of us believe we are prepared for a fire, Clot de Broissia states in her notes, a few simple improvements can make a difference. For example, a phone should be kept in each sleeping room. (The Mulloy-Levine fire was not reported to 911 by the family, but by a resident in a nearby apartment complex who saw the flames.) Plan multiple evacuation routes, and designate a family meetup spot so firefighters will not have to enter the home looking for missing family members. Make sure electric breaker boxes are up to date and safe. (At press time, the Mulloy-Levine fire was believed to have been an electrical fire that began in the downstairs study.)

I have always known that the Moss Haven Moms group is a great organization for keeping in touch with neighborhood news and networking. I am in awe of the support and generosity that helped bring us together during a time of shared sadness. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family of a wonderful Moss Haven Mom: Romina Mulloy.
