Hamden Woman’s Club Donates To Hamden Garden Of Healing

Pictured (L-R): HWC Co-President Linda Melillo and VP Christy Palumbo, Pamela Jaynez (President of the Hamden Botanical Garden of Healing), & HWC Co-President Pat Johnson.

The April 2 meeting of the Hamden Woman’s Club was especially interesting, informative and moving as we listened to our Guest Speaker , Pamela Jaynez, President of People Reuniting Over Untimely Deaths (P.R.O.U.D.) tell us true and tragic stories of violence in our community. This is an organization dedicated to making a positive contribution to our community by building a Botanical Garden of Healing - a place of peace, healing and enrichment for those who have lost a loved one through homicide. The location will be a beautiful garden at the Town-owned Eli Whitney Park, 1111 Whitney Ave, near lovely Lake Whitney. At this meeting our Hamden Woman’s Club gave a generous monetary donation to help sponsor and support this Hamden Botanical Garden of Healing. Several of our members have also volunteered to help with its maintenance because we are “The Club that Cares and Shares”.

The Hamden Woman’s Club, Inc., GFWC, is open to any woman over eighteen years of age who would like to volunteer in the community, develop new friendships, and have fun at the same time! We are a civic, educational and social organization

that was organized in 1950 and joined the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs, Inc.(GFWC) in January, 1951.

The HWC also provides many fun social benets to our members. We have a “revised” Book Club that meets monthly at a local restaurant in addition to the “International Lunch Bunch” and our “Dinner Divas”, an evening group. (We really love eating out!). Everyone loves our traveling choral group, holiday parties & banquets, assorted day trips, Military Whists, Bingo Nights, Arts & Crafts Competitions, and other fun activities!

You do NOT have to reside in Hamden to joinand we are very pleased that our membership has grown to fty (50) members and we won the Best in Membership Award” for the GFWC-CT Southeast District this year! Most meetings are held at 6:30pm on the rst Wednesday of each month from September to June, at the Hamden Senior Center (located in the rear of the Miller Memorial Library).

NEW MEMBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME to attend meetings and we urge anyone interested in learning more about the HWC to please call Sharon Nolan @ 203-248-2538. Also, please look at our Facebook page - Hamden Woman’s Club, GFWC, Inc. - for more information and fun photos of our friendly club!

Now is Not the Time to Cut Back

To The Editor: April 10, 2025

I attended the North Haven town meeting on Monday night, April 7, and listened to the voices of my community raise their concerns about this year’s proposed budget. As it stands today, the budget comes with moderate increases designed to maintain our current level of town services.

In my view, the proposed budget increase is reasonable, responsible and necessary. We are a town that consistently does more with less. When looking at our District Reference Group of 24 comparable school districts, we spend less dollars on each student, yet our kids score near the top on standardized tests. When it comes to public safety, notwithstanding limited staff and aging apparatus, our reghters respond in a matter of minutes to 911 calls and provide care to our community in their time of greatest need. We are efcient and productive with our resources. Now is not the time to cut back on critical services or ask our schools to continue to produce more with even less.

That’s why, as a Democrat, I was extremely disappointed to see our Democrat representatives engage in these budget conversations in bad faith with their colleagues and be dismissive of the legitimate perspectives of many of our residents. One Democrat Board of Finance member relied on misinformation to denounce the budget and sought to malign the character of our Republican First Selectman. Our Democrat Third Selectwoman characterized this vote as a simple question of affordability, “you either have the money or you don’t.” The town budget and concerns of our residents are far more complex than that – and if our Third Selectwoman spent more time listening to the voices of our community and less time talking, she would have heard that loud and clear. For many residents, affording this increase is a matter of principle, and preserving our town’s nancial health, services and quality of life is paramount.

When North Haveners walk into the voting booth on May 20, I would encourage everyone to remember that we rise and fall as a community, and we have a responsibility to ensure that our collective well-being is protected and preserved. VOTE YES on May 20th. Parent of two North Haven students and North Haven volunteer reghter, David Cohen

Vietnam War Veterans Encouraged To Participate in 2025 Memorial Day Parade

To The Editor: April 11, 2025

I am writing in my capacity as the Third Selectman of North Haven. At a recent Board of Selectmen meeting, I made a motion to honor Vietnam War Veterans in this year’s Memorial Day Parade. This year is the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. My colleagues on the Board enthusiastically supported my motion, and I thank Mr. Freda and Mr. Pieper for their cooperation.

If you are a Vietnam Veteran and you would like to march in the parade as a part of this tribute, please email me at sbuemi5@comcast. net. American Legion Post 76 is providing a trailer for those veterans who cannot walk the 1-mile parade route. However, the trailer is limited to seating for 15. In your email to me, please mention if you need a seat.

I think it is so important that we, as a community, honor our veterans. Back in 2015, on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II, I organized a similar tribute in the parade. The 12 World War II veterans who participated received thunderous applause.

Please attend the parade this year, Saturday May 24th and show your support for all our veterans. Thank you.

Respectfully submitted, Sally J. Buemi, Third Selectman

Our right to organize is under attack at the federal level and frequently undermined in small ways within workplaces. That’s why it’s critical we help protect this fundamental right. Will My Loved One Receive An Autopsy

State laws determine when an autopsy is required, but laws are fairly similar from state to state. Nearly all states require an autopsy when a person dies in an unusual, suspicious, or unnatural way. Most states require one when a person dies unexpectedly while not under the care of a doctor. A coroner or medical examiner must investigate the death and decide if an autopsy is needed. A coroner is not necessarily a medical doctor, but can still perform some autopsies. Most autopsies are conducted by a medical examiner or pathologist. Other reasons for a required autopsy are deaths that create concerns over a public health outbreak or when a doctor is unable to determine the cause of death.

In most cases, an autopsy is performed soon after death (usually within 24 to 48 hours) and takes place completely out of your view. The funeral home works with the coroner’s ofce to coordinate the body care and delivery times so that you do not have to be aware of any delay in the ordinary funeral planning process. In fact, other than signing the necessary release forms, you may have little to do with the autopsy at all. Please call 203239-1179 for more information. You are welcome to visit us at 36 Washington Avenue.

Sun., April 13, 10am: Palm Sunday. Fri., April 18, 7pm: “Stained” - Good Friday Experience.

Sun., April 20, 10am: Easter (Resurrection) SundayCOME HOME.

Stained - A Good Friday Experience. Come experience a Good Friday you will never forget. Stained is an evening with a mix of speaking, videos, reection, music, activities, and visual imagery that strongly contrast the sadness, loss, and death that happened on Good Friday. It is the perfect complement for hearts and souls preparing to gather together and celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.

Easter Sunday - “COME HOME THIS EASTER.”

Whatever the reason you have to run away from God, your faith, your spiritual home, Easter is your invitation to stop running. Jesus’ resurrection is the assurance that you don’t have to live with regret, shame or emptiness anymore, you can come home to God who runs toward you with arms wide open and a family at Hope Church that will do the same. Don’t let another Easter pass you by, don’t keep running.

The Father is waiting…Are you ready to Come Home?

Our vision is the same every day of the year…

“REALPEOPLE….REALHOPE….REALLIFE!” •

North Haven: It was an exciting day on Thursday April 10th at The Senior Center. Mark Schachter and the North Haven Rotary Club surprised our seniors and generously donated a beautiful Hyacinth plant for each of them. These fragrant blooms brought smiles and a breath of spring to the community. It’s small gestures like these that brighten days and remind us of all of the power of kindness. The seniors gave a big round of applause and thanks to Mark and The Rotary Club! Photos and story by Paulette DeMaio

The Women’s Club has made regular donations also to various other groups, as part of the Women’s Club’s commitment to serve the community. The avowed function of the GFWC organization is community service. The Women’s Club donates regularly to North Haven’s Food Pantry and North Haven Community Services. Each year after the rst of the year for the past dozen years and more, a large donation of school supplies is given to a North Haven Elementary School to help get the students through the rest of the school year. This year’s donation in January was to Clintonville School. The Women’s

Club has hosted over 25 Red Cross Blood Drives over the past dozen years and will be hosting another Red Cross Blood Drive in early fall.

At our May meeting, we will have a speaker from Interfaith Volunteers of Greater New Haven. If you would like to nd out more about Interfaith Volunteers and how they are helping seniors live independently at home, please join us at our meeting on May 2nd. Question & Answer - Dr. Richard

Q: What is Tarsal tunnel syndrome?

A: Tarsal tunnel syndrome is an entrapment of the posterior tibial nerve, one of the major nerves of the foot which runs along the inside aspect of the ankle into the bottom of the foot. It may occur as a result of an acute injury such as ankle sprain or chronic overuse. It has also been associated with excessive attening or rolling in of the foot and ankle when walking or running, metabolic diseases such as diabetes, certain arthritides and poor venous circulation. It can also be caused from ganglion cysts and inammation of the tendons and/or muscle belly in that area leading to no blood circulation to that nerve and nerve damage.

Common complaints include radiating pain from the inside of the ankle and foot, and pins and needles or numbness of the toes and sole of the foot. The symptoms are often aggravated by prolonged standing, walking or running, but are also commonly present while at rest or even while sleeping at night. However the most common symptom is acute tenderness in the inside of the foot and ankle area.

Treatment may include orthotics (arch supports), steroid injections, oral anti-inammatories, and physical therapy. In resitant cases, surgical release of the entrapped nerve may be necessary. It is recommended to see the podiatrist to treat your painful foot condition.
