Invasive Plant Species In CT

North Haven: Sponsored by Daytime Gardeners of North Haven and presented by Felicia Millett, MS. Invasive plant species can be deadly to our native trees, shrubs, and landscape plantings. They thrive in our climate and take advantage of our native plants. Do you have invasives on your property? Can you identify the good from the bad plant species? Do you know the best safe and effective method to eradicate invasives? The Daytime Gardeners May presentation by Felica Millett will answer these questions and help you learn more about Connecticut invasive plants and how to protect your property.

Felicia Millett is a Plant Diagnostician in the Department of Plant Pathology & Ecology at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES). Invasive plant species can ruin the health and beauty of your landscape. Taking proper action to control these species can avoid extensive problems later. This presentation will cover identication and treatment of the top invasive species in Connecticut. Timing is important for success so learn now so you can be ready to take action at the right time.

The program will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, from 11:00 AM until noon at the North Haven Recreation Center, 7 Linsley Street, North Haven. Guests are welcome. A $5.00 guest donation is appreciated. Please call Daytime Gardeners at 203-239-1557 to register for the meeting.

New members are always welcome. For information on our activities and membership, email proto.mary@yahoo.com, and be sure to visit us on Facebook at Daytime Gardeners of North Haven.

Got It Made at 80

We oldsters sure do get away with a lot just because we’ve managed to keep breathing longer than most folks. I have just celebrated my 80th birthday and I’ve got it made.

If you forget someone’s name or an appointment, or what you said yesterday, just explain that you are 80 and you will be forgiven. If you spill soup on your tie or forget to shave half your face, or take another man’s hat by mistake, or promise to mail a letter and carry it around in your pocket, just say “I’m 80, you know” and nobody will say a thing.

Being 80 is much better than being 70. At 70, people are mad at you for everything, but if you make it to 80, you can talk back, argue, disagree, and insist on having your own way, because everybody thinks you are getting a little soft in the head. They say that life begins at 40. Not true. If you ask me, life begins at 80.

Question & Answer - Dr. Richard Durocher

Q: What is a Tailor’s Bunion?

A: A Tailor’s bunion is similar to a bunion which occurs at the joint between the big toe and the foot. A Tailor’s bunion is located at the joint where the 5th or small toe and the foot meet. It is a bump of bone that protrudes outward. Some people are predisposed to this condition due to heredity and an imbalance in the functioning elements of the foot. Irritation and pressure from shoes can also contribute to the development of this condition. In the beginning of its development it is usually not painful, but as it enlarges, it may become painful.

Initial conservative approaches may include padding, wearing wider shoes and orthotics (custom-made inserts). Orthotics will help the foot function better. When conservative care has not helped, surgical intervention may be recommended to realign the bones and remove the bump.

Contact Dr. Durocher for an evaluation of this condition.

Avoiding Cliches: What to Say When Someone Dies

Visiting a bereaved family can be awkward and uncomfortable. Sometimes people avoid these situations completely, from fear of saying the wrong thing or simply not knowing what to say. Even with best intentions, the wrong words at this delicate time can be painful. Under pressure, we often turn to clichés, but these overused statements may be untrue and often don’t make people feel better. Other things to avoid are unsolicited advice, comparisons to other deaths, interrogations about the death, judgements about the death or deceased, and placing blame on caretakers. Sometimes a grieving person really needs a good listener or someone to sit with in silence. A simple statement of support and offer to help may be your best gift.

When in the position of wanting to help a friend or loved one in grief, our rst desire is often to try to “x” the situation, when in all actuality our good intentions can lead to nothing but more grief. Knowing the right thing to say is only half of the responsibility of being a supportive emotional caregiver. To learn about our services, please call 203-239-1179. We are located at 36 Washington Avenue.

McGivney Center to Highlight Papacy of Pope Francis

New Haven: The Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center in New Haven is welcoming visitors to view a memorial display on the papacy of His Holiness Pope Francis, and to leave a written tribute in its register of condolence. The display consists of Vatican correspondence, objects, and archival documents related to the Knights of Columbus during the 12 years of Pope Francis’ ponticate. In 2020, Pope Francis approved the miracle that led to the beatication of Father Michael McGivney, Founder of the Knights of Columbus.

Beyond the tribute display, the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center features a permanent gallery that recounts the relationship between the Vatican and the Knights of Columbus. Popes have had a signicant role in the growth and activities of the Knights of Columbus during the organization’s 143-year history. Featured items include artwork, artifacts, commemorative papal medallions and photographs.

News outlets seeking local angles to papal news developments are invited to visit. The Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center is at 1 State Street in New Haven, and is open Wed-Sun., from 10am-4pm. Parking is in the McGivney Center’s underground garage.

Statement of KofC Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly

Following The Election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV

Pictured: Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly and his wife, Vanessa, greeting Cardinal Robert F. Prevost in the Vatican’s Hall of Blessings on Sept. 30, 2023, following his creation as a cardinal. From the same Hall of Blessings, the new pontiff emerged today to greet and impart his rst Urbi et Orbi (To the City and the World) blessing to the faithful following his election as Pope Leo XIV.

New Haven: Following the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly issued the following statement:

“The Knights of Columbus joins Catholics everywhere in celebrating the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the successor of St. Peter and spiritual leader of the Catholic Church. On behalf of our 2.1 million members around the world, I pledge our loyalty to Pope Leo XIV as well as our prayers today and every day of his ponticate. The Knights of Columbus will always stand in solidarity with Pope Leo XIV as we support the Church’s mission of evangelization through our works of charity and faith formation.

“Pope Leo XIV, the rst American Pope, assumes the Petrine ministry with a strong familiarity with the Knights of Columbus. I was honored to meet with him in 2023, shortly after the beginning of his tenure as Prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops, and I know rsthand of his sincere appreciation for the Knights of Columbus and our service to the Church around the world. Our Order began during the ponticate of Pope Leo XIII - and in the years ahead, we will proudly stand with Pope Leo XIV as we seek together to build up the Kingdom of God.

“Since our founding in 1882 by Blessed Michael McGivney, delity to the Holy Father has been a dening characteristic of the Knights of Columbus. As it was with his predecessors, the pastoral priorities of Pope Leo XIV will guide and inform everything we do.”

Following the First World War, the Knights of Columbus answered the invitation of Pope Benedict XV to open sports elds to serve the youth of Rome. And ever since, for more than a century, the Knights has enjoyed a long and enduring relationship with each successive Pope. Since 1980, the Knights of Columbus has sponsored numerous restoration projects at the Vatican, most recently the restoration of Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s iconic Baldacchino over the papal altar and tomb of St. Peter, as well as the Chair of St. Peter monument, both undertaken in anticipation of the Jubilee Year 2025.

Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers Presentation To GFWC Women’s Club OF North Haven

Pictured (L-R): Pam Lerner, Pres. GFWC Women’s Club of North Haven, Dan Camenga, Executive Director of Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of Greater New Haven, Bernadine Goulet, Vice President of GFWC Women’s Club of North Haven.

North Haven: At the May meeting of the GFWC Women’s Club on May 2, 2025 Dan Camenga, Executive Director of Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers of Greater New Haven (IVCG of GNH) provided an excellent, highly informative presentation of the numerous activities of IVCG and its important impact on New Haven and surrounding communities. IVCG has been in operation for 41 years. It was founded under the auspices of the Downtown Cooperative Ministries as a non-sectarian aid organization. Its mission involves neighbors helping neighbors with an emphasis on seniors. Over the years IVCG has developed many programs to meet the needs of area seniors, and even a reading program to help children in grades 1 to 4 learn to read under supervision of a senior citizen with approval and coordination with the schools.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) with clubs in all 50 states and internationally, began in the 1890’s, and over the years has been instrumental in the growth of our Nation. GFWC was involved in the development of public free libraries, raised millions of dollars to fund the building of bombers and ghters during WW 2. With member, Eleanor Roosevelt, was involved in supporting the United Nations, and many other activities. Service to the community has been the major goal of the GFWC Women’s Clubs since their inception some 130 years ago. Their motto is “GFWC LIVING THE VOLUNTEER SPIRIT”.

Since September the GFWC Women’s Club of North Haven has been involved in many projects For Domestic Violence Month in October, the Women’s Club lled 33 purses with toiletries, socks, other feminine necessities and provided these to BHcare for women in Domestic Violence Safe Houses. Also in October the Women’s Club donated diapers, wipes, children’s clothes and other items to Mary and Joseph’s Place for mothers with nancial needs. Throughout the year members give food donations to North Haven’s facilities. A large amount of food, toys and gift cards was donated North Haven’s Community Services. In December The Women’s Club provided paperbacks. Socks and underwear, winter hats and gloves, toiletries, calendars, holiday cards and other items to the Veterans Hospital in West Haven. Tray favors of small vases containing articial owers and a candy cane for the patients at the VA hospital in West Haven were given in December as our part of our holiday gifting to the veterans. In January the Club provided school supplies to Clintonville School in North Haven. At the GFWC State Convention on May 9, the GFWC Women’s Club of North Haven received 11 awards largely for service to the community. And so it goes with the Women’s Club providing services or donations to the community each month of the club year.

The GFWC Women’s Club is open to women 18 and over who are interested in making a real difference in their community through numerous community service projects. Contact Pam Lerner at (203) 281-3090 for additional information about our club and meetings. Join us at one of our meetings and meet other ladies who are committed to serving our community. Come and meet, make friends and enjoy some social time as well.

Our club meets at the North Haven Senior Center on the rst Friday of the month at 10:00 am. Again, our members would enjoy meeting new people who may nd our activities meaningful. In the current economic and political climate service to the community is more important than ever.
