EDUCATION Week is always a time of celebration, but this year’s feels extra special.

This year, Victoria is marking the historic milestone of 150 years of public education, and it is the theme of this Education Week.

Of the schools opened in 1872, the year the public education act was enshrined into law, more than 150 state schools are still open today.

In 2022, there are now more than 1500 schools providing education to Victorian communities, cementing our future as the Education State.

Public education has changed lives, there’s no doubt about that. It is the great enabler. We know that with the right support, every child thrives.

During Education Week — from 22–28 May — I encourage every student, parent, carer, teacher, and educator to take part in the variety of events and activities being held across the state. You will get so much out of it.

This year is all about commemorating the past,

celebrating the present and imagining the future of education here in Victoria.

It’s an opportunity for all schools, higher education providers and early childhood education and care services to showcase their role in our state’s education story. A story that now includes successfully navigating all the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Victorians are also invited to contribute to a 150 Years of Public Education digital time capsule by emailing school memories, be they photos, reports, or trivia, to 150years@education.vic.gov.au.

Give your children a head start

By Stephanie Holliday CHILDREN are born ready to learn, and their brains develop through use. They require a stimulating environment with lots of different ways to play and learn and also plenty of chances to practice what they’re learning.

Babies and young children learn best when they have warm, engaged and responsive relationships with their main carers and peers. Lots of time spent playing and interacting with others helps children learn the skills they need for life – like communicating, thinking, problemsolving, moving and being with other people.

Playgroups are informal, low cost and gives families and carers the chance to meet other people going through

similar experiences and break down the isolation that can come with caring for young children. Families can be gently introduced to community, health and support services while they are at playgroup.

“Participation in playgroups is such a wonderful way for children to increase their school readiness. It gives children early exposure to learning and socialising with their peers, giving them a head start,” The Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, said.

“School readiness increases the likelihood children will enjoy and succeed at school."

Supporting diverse learners

THE first Diverse Learners Focus Group has come together, made up of Sheppar ton district community s t a ke h o l d e r s , i n c l u d i n g p a r e n t , teacher, medical, multicultural, student representation and co-chaired by Independent Member for Shepparton, Suzanna Sheed. “ We want to explore options on what type of education model will suit diverse learners in mainstream

education and bring it back to the s tudents , teachers , and p arents of Greater Sheppar ton Secondary College,” Ms Sheed said.

“A s it s tands , there are som e students with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder who receive a level of financial support, others with the same characteristics but who are not diagnosed and therefore unfunded, and also students who may have some

autistic characteristics.

The group was briefed by someone with lived experience of the lack of resources, understanding, and sometimes intolerance of issues he faced at school such as light or noise sensitivity. While he had found ways to cope on his own, there is still significant lack of understanding of the needs of diverse learners. “ With all our secondar y school students now on the one campus, the capacity to design innovative programs across the nine schools at Greater Shepparton Secondary College has never been better. The capacity to pool resources, undertake professional education and design spaces to ensure better educational outcomes must be a priority for this group and we look forward to continuing to have further meetings and discussions to eventually achieve a model that will suit our students,” said Ms Sheed. “ O n c e a n ew m o d e l is wid e l y supported by students, their families, and teachers, it can be adopted and amended as needed by the school with the ongoing support of the group. This will be an inclusive approach which will fit with government policy and enable us to seek any additional support we need from government to implement it.”

Euroa Primary pledges Water Only STUDENTS at Euroa Primary School have pledged to become a Water Only school, one of more than 80 workplaces, kinders, schools and playgroups signed on to Goulburn Valley Water’s (GVW) Water Only program, encouraging people to commit to only drinking water while at school or work.

Life changing cultural experience

For Sharni Wilson, this will be the first time someone in her family has travelled overseas and for most of the students, this is the first trip they will take outside of Australia.

THE SHEPPARTON EDUCATION PLAN After years of campaigning for better education for our young people, I am delighted to see the Shepparton Education Plan roll out and benefit our students.

The $140 million plan included the building of our state-of-the-art Greater Shepparton Secondary College, which opened earlier this year. Merging four schools together to ensure better facilities and resources was a huge task

but worthwhile when we see secondary school students enjoying the same – if not a better – educational experience as their metropolitan counterparts.

Part of the plan was the establishment of the Children and Families Centre, where three and four-year-old kindergarten students thriving in the stunning new facility. The centre has everything young children need to begin their educational journey and help them transition easily into primary school.

The fourth stage of the plan has been unveiled, which focuses on the pathway to tertiary education.

I am excited to see how this huge investment in education will lift the aspirations of our students today and for decades to come.

Time to nominate local learners NOMINATIONS are now open for the 16th annual Victorian Learn Local Awards, recognising excellence in the adult and community education sector.

Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp, invites locals to nominate people whose stories illustrate the life-changing impact of adult and community education.

“Our adult and community education system plays a vital role in helping Victorians build the skills they need for

work and life – and the Learn Local Awards are a fantastic chance to recognise the lifechanging impact of the sector.”

“Learn Locals provide life-long learning opportunities to Victorians and build more connected communities – and if you know a Northern Victorian whose story illustrates excellence in the sector, we want you to nominate them for an award.”

The prize pool totals $84,000 while the organisation award category winners

each receive $10,000, individual category winners $5,000, and category finalists $1,000.

Local not-for-profit, Shepparton Access, has been recognised by the awards previously for their work Creating Pathways into the Community.

Preparing your child for boarding school STARTING boarding school is a huge step for children and families alike. To help your child prepare and to make boarding school a positive learning experience, try these helpful tips: #1 Talk about it Talk to your child about how they are feeling about going to boarding school and being away from home.

They could be excited, anxious, or a mix of both. Assure them it is normal to feel nervous, and other kids will feel the same way. Talk through any concerns and help your child identify strategies to deal with them. #2 Be positive Parents can find it hard to send their child away for their education.

Try to be positive and enthusiastic when talking with your child so that

your feelings don’t rub off on them.

Children are very adaptable, and with support and time, most grow to love the experience of boarding school. #3 Encourage independence At boarding school, your child will be responsible for organising themselves and their possessions, perhaps for the first time. Begin instilling this responsibility now by putting them in charge of a list of what they are taking. Find out what chores your child will need to do for themselves and give them the opportunity to practice at home.
