QFES Acting Superintendent John Welke presented QFES Medals to Peter Cook and Ronald Fiechtner while Adam Carney received a First and Second Clasp for his QFES Medal.

First Clasps for their Diligent and Ethical Service Medals (DESM) were presented to Marilyn Greer and Garry Greer.

A First and Second Clasp for his DESM was presented to Allan Bellingham and a DESM Second Clasp was presented to Ron Spoelder.

Ronald Fiechtner and Scott Woodhouse were presented with Citations from the New South Wales Premier in recognition of their contribution to the firefighting efforts against that state’s horrific bushfires in 2019 and 2020.

A number of other Cambooya Rural Fire volunteers who were part of the contingent which went to New South Wales had been previously honoured with the Premier’s Citations.

At Monday night’s ceremony, several Auxiliary firefighters from the Anzac Avenue Fire Station in Toowoomba were in attendance, along with Acting Superintendent Welke and Chief Superintendent Jason Lawler.

QFES Assistant Commissioner David Hermann was scheduled to be at the event but had to withdraw to due illness.

Get ready for Battle of the Bands

Jam sessions have amped up across the Region as home-grown musicians get ready to fight it out in August’s Battle of the Bands as part of Live and Local Toowoomba.

Hosted by Council’s Toowoomba Regional Youth Leaders, Battle of the Bands will be a standout opportunity for musicians and bands aged 12 to 25 to showcase their talents, make industry connections and kick-start their musical careers by entering this year’s competition.

Entries are now open and there’s more than $7000 in prizes up for grabs with prizes for the top three acts in each category.

The Regional Council’s Environment and Community Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said Battle of the Bands is the perfect opportunity for the Region’s emerging talent to blaze a trail in the local music scene.

“Battle of the Bands will promote local youth bands and acoustic artists across our region,” Cr O’Shea said.

“We already know there are a number of incredibly talented young artists in our region but we want to create more opportunities for these emerging artists as well as bring them to new and bigger audiences.

“The majority of these musicians have been attending the QMusic Connect workshops held throughout June and applying those learnings to their practice, so we are expecting

some first class performances.

Cr O’Shea said Battle of the Bands will build on the work done to date as part of the Live and Local Strategic Initiative to foster industry skills and collaboration and encourage more live music events for the community.

“There has been a long history of our youth committees hosting live music festivals showcasing our region’s talents and we [sic] excited for the 2021 competition bringing diverse artists from a wide range of musical backgrounds.”

ROUGH ROAD To the Editor, I am extremely concerned, as are the users of this road, that Cr. Carol Taylor states that maintenance and drainage has been completed on Rosenberger Road.

Rosenberger Road is on the door-step of Toowoomba, just south of Wyreema.

The maintenance gang were working on the road for about a week before they arrived to clear the causeway that had

caused the road to be half closed for one month.

Again we have got a band-aid job of grade the dirt off and on the road, water and roll.

We asked for pipes for the causeway, but were told we would get some gravel.

We got neither.

If Cr Carol Taylor thinks this is completed maintenance, ratepayers are saying this has been a complete waste of funds with pot holes and slush returning after two weeks.

The engineer was requested to inspect the completed job.

This road has 95 vehicles a day on the unsealed eastern section, 20 residences and is approximately 8 kilometres from Wyreema to the Umbiram Road.

This band-aiding has gone on for 20 plus years, never improving the road.

Another classic example of this is Newman Road, where huge corrugated iron pipes were put in the gully and after some years it has become a massive roadworks.

This road is just not built to take the traffic of horse trucks etc. It continues to get worse every time it rains - it took three weeks to complete this unacceptable maintenance.

This type of work would not be acceptable in Toowoomba or Highfields and nor is it acceptable here.

Buying trucks for $13.6 million gives the impression that the Infrastructure Budget has a surplus, but where is it?

When are we going to get our FAIR share of the budget for country roads?

Visitors to the area ask, Do you people not pay your rates?

This explains how disgusting this road is.

The refusal to seal this section of approximately 6 kilometres is unbelievable, considering other roads that have been given preference over this one.

Absolutely, nobody in this area is happy and may be Cr. Carol Taylor may like to meet with the irate users of this road in Wyreema?

State funding for Newman Road works

The Queensland Government has allocated $1.11 million to Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) for the Newman Road Culvert Replacement project in Wyreema.

New cameras to monitor driving habits

Roadside cameras that can catch drivers using their phones behind the wheel or not wearing a seatbelt will be permanently rolled out on Queensland roads, including regional highways, from 26 July.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey warned drivers that the locations of the cameras will not be publicly revealed.

“Some of the cameras will be mobile, and we won’t be telling people where they are either,” Minister Bailey said.

“Drivers should expect to be caught anywhere, anytime, whether they’re driving in the city or on a regional highway.”

There will be a three month grace period for drivers, meaning those caught on camera using their phone between 26 July and 31 October this year will be notified and made aware they had been caught, but not fined.

From 1 November, any driver caught by the cameras can expect to receive a $1033 fine and lose four demerit points.

The cameras will also be able to detect drivers and their front seat passengers not wearing their seatbelts.

The current penalty for not wearing a seatbelt is $413 and three demerit points.

Mr Bailey said distracted driving was a silent killer on the state’s roads, likening it to drink driving.

“Our message has always been direct and very simple: just put your phone away.

“Using a mobile phone while driving has the same impact as getting behind the wheel with a blood alcohol reading between 0.07 and 0.10.

“We successfully trialled these cameras last year, and have been talking about them coming to Queensland roads for two years,” Mr Bailey said.

Last year, 43 people who died in crashes in Queensland weren’t wearing a seatbelt, 14 more than in 2019 and 15 more than the previous five-year average.

Mr Bailey said the penalties were necessary to stamp out driver distraction.

“So far in 2021, 136 people have died on Queensland roads – 12 more than at the same time last year,” he said.

“The numbers are shocking, particularly when you consider that for every life lost, another 27 people are treated in hospital,” he said.

Driver distraction contributes to almost 20 per cent of serious injuries and 12 per cent of all lives lost on Queensland roads.

RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said RACQ welcomed the introduction of mobile phone and seatbelt detection cameras across Queensland to improve road safety.

“We know on average around 29 people are killed and more than a thousand others are seriously injured every year on Queensland roads as a result of crashes where driver distraction played a part,” Ms Smith said.

National Servicemen’s Association Toowoomba Branch

We are asking those Nashos born in 1941 to contact the secretary as the OBE luncheon will be held on Sunday 8th August at the Irish Club hotel, Russell St. This is a great opportunity to catch up with Nasho mates and reminisce about the years spent at Wacol and other training places.

If you know of a Nasho in that age bracket please let them know about this day.

Of course, all Nashos no matter their age, are most welcome to attend this lunch and make it a special day for the Over Bloomin’ Eighties.

Recently the Toowoomba branch of the National Servicemen’s Association hosted a luncheon honouring the widows of National Servicemen.

About 50 Nashos, wives, widows and supporters enjoy a delightful lunch at the Irish Club Hotel as well as lucky draws in the raffle.

Due to the uncertainty regarding COVID we had badge stalls at only one venue for Anzac day this year.

Our thanks goes to all who willingly assisted and to those who purchased items from our stall.

We hope to have stalls for Remembrance day in November.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

We have a Social ‘get together’ lunch at the City Golf Club, South Street 3rd Friday of every month.

The next lunch is 16th July, a table is booked so just come along and enjoy a chat with your fellow Nashos.
