Sheep Reproductive Facility For Allora

Arolla Pastoral Company’s James and Carla Pidgeon hope to fast-track the production of genetically superior sheep.

Works are underway on a sheep reproductive facility at Allora designed to fasttrack Queensland’s supply of genetically superior lambs while creating four direct jobs and 11 indirect jobs for Queenslanders as a result of the project.

Arolla Pastoral Company, a fifth-generation family farm business run by James and Carla Pidgeon, is behind the project which aims to improve sheep fertility and the productivity of offspring.

“Instead of it taking us 10 years to get rid of sheep defects by natural birth, it will only take us a couple years through the use of artificial intelligence employed by the sheep reproductive facility,” Mr Pidgeon said.

Tenders Now Closed For Allora Pool Operator

Unfortunately for Allora the current Lessee/operator Andrew Fidge of the Allora Swimming Pool did not apply for the Contract beyond March 2024. Andrew had a 2 year option but has been advised that the option has been withdrawn.

This is a huge loss for Allora and the local swimming club as Andrew trained an enthusiastic group of swimmers with some he believes could make the Olympics. Andrew has been supporting Southern Downs Swimming for 19 years and this year was awarded the Country Coach of the Year.

The Allora Advertiser approached Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) for comments from Mayor Pennisi on the details of the decision to seek expressions of interest for tenders and the reasons for that decision.

Not satisfied with the response from “a spokesperson” the Allora Advertiser asked Mayor Pennisi directly for a response -

The reply from Mayor Pennisi -

“The current tender acknowledges that the existing operator at the Allora Pool has through to March 2024, and as such, a prospective tender would only pick this site up after that time. If the existing operator is seeking to

extend their tenure with Council beyond March 2024, then they are encouraged to participate in this process to ensure we don’t need to do this again next year, which would take time and come at a cost.

The tender process is also something that is triggered by the Local Government Act and Regulations, and as such, Council is ensuring that it meets its statutory obligations whilst also ensuring it meets those requirements set down around the sound contracting principles, which are—

(a) value for money;

(b) open and effective competition;

(c) the development of competitive local business and industry;

(d) environmental protection; and

(e) ethical behaviour and fair dealing

If you require further information, please let me know.

Regards,

Vic Pennisi - MAYOR

Southern Downs Regional Council

The Request for Tender was extended through to Sunday 4 June 2023 and the process is now subject to an evaluation. Council will decide the outcome shortly at a future meeting.

Major Purchases And Upgrades At St Patrick’s School Allora

In order to maximise and improve the learning environment for our students, a number of major purchases and upgrades have been made. New interactive data projectors have been installed in Talgai and Cunningham together with new digital TV’s in Dalrymple and Glengallan. The cost of this project was around $12,000. New chairs have been ordered across the whole school in varying colours which is designed to brighten the existing classrooms. These chairs will be delivered in Term 3 and have cost $4000. Our major goal in terms of building and maintenance is to re-carpet and paint the existing corridor that runs alongside the classrooms. We also hope to provide some pin board and whiteboard areas in the corridor that will assist students in individual break out small group sessions.

Brian McAllister from MacroSphere has visited St Patrick’s on a number of

occasions this year. Brian has carried out equipment service checks on each classroom’s Frontrow Sound System and has provided professional development to our staff in the optimal use of these systems to maximise the clarity of sound for our students. As part of the upgrades, the school has also purchased new teacher and student microphones for each classroom together with a portable/rechargeable sound system for specific use outdoors. This sound system has a Blue Tooth/ wireless receiver. The total cost for the sound systems upgrades is around $12,000.

Premier backs

‘absolutely vital’ regional newspapers

Queensland Premier and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Annastacia Palaszczuk MP officially opened the Queensland Country Press Association (QCPA) 115th Annual conference held in Brisbane recently.

Premier Palaszczuk described regional newspapers as ‘absolutely vital’ and as the ‘lifeblood of their communities’ before offering to help ensure that a larger share of the Queensland state government advertising budget be directed at communicating with regional

Queenslanders through independent regional newspapers.

The Premier referred to the ‘resurgence’ of independent newspaper publishers in Queensland as a contributing factor.

The Premier’s pledge also aligns with key findings from a recently released Deakin University report on media innovation which found that, “Securing the future of quality and reliable news and information platforms in nonmetropolitan areas is in the national interest.”

Working Together To Solve Crime

Community Camera Alliance is a Queensland Police Services (GPS) voluntary closed circuit television (CCTV) registration program. It’s an initiative of the Darling Downs Police District that aims to promote the relationship between the community and the GPS by encouraging the registration of CCTV systems located in the region, in order to prevent crime and make the community safer. CCTV has become a crucial investigative tool in modern day policing. If you have a CCTV system at your home or your business that you would like to register - forms are available at the Allora Police Station and from the Allora Advertiser office.

Local producers ensuring lamb quality

Arolla Pastoral Company’s dedicated facility, which will feature an embryo centre and automatic feeders, will also enable the careful management of lambs and high standards of animal welfare and biosecurity.

James said that following years of drought, Arolla Pastoral Company is specialising in Australian White breed sheep meat due to its adaptability to warm climates, making their enterprise more drought resilient and resistant to market fluctuations.

“The project diversifies our enterprise even more which is so important because we know weather and prices can change really quickly,” he said.

The increased number of breeding sheep from the project will not only benefit the wider population of Queensland sheep producers, but also the local Darling Downs economy, which is built on the agricultural industry.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said Arolla Pastoral Company was a family farm business on the Southern Downs with a strong reputation for their forwardthinking and successful sheep breeding.

“Their sheep reproductive facility project will create 15 good jobs for Queenslanders from construction all the way through to the management of the facility and create flow-on economic benefits for the local community,” Minister Furner said.

“The dedicated facility will boost the supply of genetically good lambs in Queensland and help satiate the growing appetite for quality sheep meat products.”

The $560,000 project is being funded by a $200,000 RAD Grant from the State Government, and a $360,000 co-contribution from Arolla Pastoral

Company.

The company is one of 10 sheep and goat enterprises across rural and regional Queensland which collectively received just over $1.8 million in funding under round one of the RAD Grant program.

The RAD program supports projects that help grow the sheep and goat industries while creating

jobs as part of the State Government’s strategy to double the value of sheep and goat production.

The Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority (QRIDA) administers the Rural Agricultural Development (sheep and goats) Grant Scheme on behalf of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Crocker Leads Wattles Rumble Over Eagles

In a man of the match performance powerhouse bookend Jordan Crocker was in the forefront of a dominant performance that saw the ‘Stillwater Pastoral Company’ Wattles Warriors A graders post a 44 – 20 win over the Highfields Eagles at a bleak Platz Oval on Sunday.

The success has lifted Crocker and his teammates into the TRL Hutchinson Builders first grade premiership ladder’s top four.

Wattles forward pack paved the way to victory built on a 12 – 4 half time lead, that resulted in the home side running in eight tries to four across the game, seven from the green and gold back line.

The loss of five-eight Tom Morris to injury pre-kick off caused a shuffle in the Warriors line up, and also allowed capable reserve grade forward Will Manley his first top grade run this season.

winger Mitch Bourke was also a casualty with a hamstring concern after ten minutes of play.

Along with Crocker, fellow front-rower Jacob Leach led the band of Wattles’ enforcers that eventually overwhelmed the Eagles.

Leach was a force to be reckoned with against his former club, with team mate and another former Eagle Jacob Mouatt coming off the bench to make his presence felt.

Top team five-eight Nick van der Poel was another of many to shine collecting a try double for his efforts.

Skipper and back rower Ty Gardner led from the front in what has to be considered an impressive team performance, with the likes of ever dependable fullback Matthew Christensen, halfback Brayden Paix, centre Austin Jennings, winger Jake Meddleton and threequarter Lachlan Henry in his return to first grade.

Wattles 44 (Nick Van Der Poel 2, Matt Christensen, Austin Jennings, Lachlan Henry, Zach Stevens, Nick Morris, Jordan Crocker tries Brayden Paix 6 goals) defeated Highfields 20 (Tom Ramsay 2, Carl Clement, Shannon Elara tries Reilly Land 2 goals)

Reserve Grade - After a grinding first half that saw Wattles emerge 12 –0 leaders at the break, five second stanza touchdowns saw the ‘Tony Morris Tiling’ Warriors stamp their

authority on what was their seventh winning result from eight outings this season ahead 36 – 4 at full time.

While for coach Tony Morris the focus is only as far as the next game, the Clive Berghofer Land Sales top of the table Warriors would have an inkling the mid-season championship President’s Cup is within reach with three more fixtures to play.

“Regardless of how well we’re going, there’s still plenty of work to do leading up to Presidents Cup” according to the mentor.

After taking on Oakey, Newtown & Brothers over the next three weeks, Wattles will need to be in the top two on the ladder come full time on June 24th for a crack at the mid-year silverware on July 2nd.

Wattles 36 (Braydon Wilson 2, Joe Willett, Tim Hentschel, Jack Duggan, Jordan Henry, Tom Henry, Daniel Rub tries; Jordan Henry 2 goals) d. Highfields 4

Under 19 - It was a case of the one that got away for the ‘Black Toyota, Warwick’ Under 19 Wattles colts, and

while they enjoyed plenty of possession a high error rate across the game put paid to a winning result.

Highfields snatched a 10 – 0 lead by the 12-minute mark, and while Wattles struck back with a try by steam rolling centre Aiden Suhan, the visitors took a 14 – 4 lead to the break.

The second stanza was a more level affair with a try apiece, Wattles touchdown by busy hooker Lachlan Hearn.

While they had their opportunities, the young Warriors failed to put points on the scoreboard.

Back-rowers George Nott and Marley Tunstead were toilers in Wattles pack, as were lock Reuben Sullivan and tough frontrower Lane Eastwell.

Highfields 20 defeated Wattles 10 (Aiden Suhan, Lachlan Hearn tries; Koby De Luca goal).

Round 9 - Wattles travel to Oakey this Saturday up against the Bears in Under 19, Reserve & A Grade fixtures at Trevor Mickleborough Oval.

Wattles Warriors Taste Success on Granite Belt

The Wattles Junior Warriors enjoyed a great day of undefeated junior rugby league in superb weather last Saturday in Stanthorpe contesting Round 7 Warwick & District Junior Rugby League fixtures against the Stanthorpe junior Gremlins.

Willett Electrical Under 7Wattles Under 7’s excelled against the Gremlins proving way too strong across the field in attack and defence as they dominated the game.

Dalrymple Landscape & Haulage Under 9 - It was another convincing win for the Warriors Under 9 team as they continued their purple patch of form against the Gremlins, running in seventeen tries to four winners.

Coach Chris Ryan felt it was “especially good to see the whole team contributing to the win with seven individual try scorers.

Black Toyota, Warwick Under 10 - A very productive day in Stanthorpe for Wattles Under 10’s.

Thursday at training the team worked on conserving energy and working in defensive corridors. “This paid dividends with a very nice defensive line all day” according to coach Ian Brady.

Ryanie for Tyres Under 12Wattles Under 12 coach George Gall was very impressed with his team’s winning result.

“Our attack was good, and while the defence was patchy, all players performed well.

Three Under 11 players stepped up a grade, many thanks to Mick Willet who hit the ball up well, Levi Zadow, Emilia Walker and Jade Bailey who all put in polished efforts.

Under 13 - At the top of the Warwick & District premiership ladder Wattles Under 13’s enjoyed an overwhelming 42-6 win, although coach Glen McMillan felt the scoreline didn’t really reflect the game.

The Warriors high standard defence was the highlight of the match.

All In Electrical Under 15 Girls League Tag - Coach George Berry felt the early start at journey south might explain his team being a bit out of sorts in the first ten minutes.

The Warrior girls soon altered their focus though playing with discipline and intent and controlled the game.

According to coach Berry, “the team’s ability to turn around slow starts, along with their strength right across the park is a positive sign coming into the second round of the competition.”

Drayton Medical Centre

Under 15 - In what was a tough match against Stanthorpe, the Wattles Under 15 line-up were able to show some resilience to come from behind on the scoreboard to take the win 22 – 10.

The game was filled with errors from both teams in the first half.

An improved second half from the Warriors led to three tries and earning them the win.

Club Hotel, Clifton Under 17 Ladies League Tag - Wattles totally dominated their Stanthorpe opponents in the Under 17 ladies league tag match with a convincing 60 – 0 result.

Alex Gilmore (3), Teeah Davis (2), Abbey Monckton (2), Steph Lyons (2), Tayah Wallis and BillieLeigh Gorringe.

Steph Lyons was well on target with her kicking boot with kicking eight successful conversions.

Hamblin Builders Under 17

- A 34 – 10 win over Stanthorpe by Wattles Under 17 side has them firmly on second rung of the premiership ladder.

Hamish Gartery took full advantage of the extra room at fullback running in a hat trick of tries, while centre Ben Barbierato notched up a double.

Halfback Billy Peardon directed play well at halfback in an overall pleasing team performance according to coach Shane Wright. Forwards Darcy Betts, McCabe Miller & Nick Hearn led the pack forward effectively.

Wattles 34 (Hamish Gartery 3, Ben Barbierato 2, Jack Phelan, Adrian Titus tries; Ben Barbierato 2, Bryce Stewart goals).

Round 8 - Wattles Juniors head to Warwick on Saturday June 10th to take on the Eastern Suburbs Hornets at St Marks Sports Grounds.
