Vital firies recognised

The members of the Cambooya Rural Fire Brigade quite literally save lives and their crucial role in the community has been acknowledged by the Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Mark Ryan.

Last Saturday, 6 August, some of the Cambooya Rural Fire Brigade members were presented with their service medals at Charlton

by Mr Ryan.

They were: Christopher Palmblad (former member) Diligent and Ethical Service Medal for 10 years service.

David Payne - Fire Warden and Support member, 1st clasp for Diligent Ethical Service for 20 years service.

Brock Greer - Crew Leader member, 15 years National Medal for service.

Garry Greer - First Officer member, 1st clasp for 25 years of service for National Medal.

Allan Bellingham - Crew Leader member, 1st and 2nd clasp for 25 years and 35 years of service for National Medal.

Michael Henry - Crew Leader member, 1st clasp for 25 years of service for National Medal.

Important milestone for local business

The Greenridge Group, printer of On Our Selection News, last week celebrated 30 years since its founding.

Based in Toowoomba at large premises in Wilsonton, almost 50 in 2022.

Mark Osborne founded the business with the help of his Greenridge has expanded immensely over the past three wife Fran and has since passed the reins to son Kyal, the decades, from its humble beginnings of five staff in 1992 to Managing Director.

Younger son Luke is also involved with the family business.

Mr Osborne said it had taken a lot of hard work and dedication to get to where they are today.

“To be honest, I never even imagined I’d still be in this business at all!” Mr Osborne said.

“I’d just gone into business on my own for the first time, we had five staff members, and I was working around 60 hours per week.”

A large part of Greenridge’s expansion has been through acquiring other businesses, including its largest competitor in Toowoomba, Cranbrook Press, in 2004 and Warwick’s Creed and Lang.

Kyal Osborne said the focus over the last decade has been expanding the business, which now includes six separate brands.

From a small offset press, where anything requiring colour had a six-week turn-around, the annual turnover is over The ink on this page came from these huge cyan, magenta, $10 million. yellow and black vats on top of the printing press.

Greenridge has been printing On Our Selection News and its sister publications since April 2019.

Newspapers are just one of many different things being printed, which include flyers, catalogues, corflutes and food packaging labels.

The company’s printing expertise has been acknowledged on a national level, recently winning multiple awards at the 39th National Print Awards in Melbourne, the highest recognition you can receive in the industry.

Greenridge won the gold, silver and bronze for the Regional Printer of the Year - over 12 employees for print perfection and was recognised as the Best Regional Printing Company in Australia.

Weir: where’s our $175 rebate?

A $175 electricity bill rebate promised by the Queensland Government is yet to be applied despite it being well over two months since its announcement.

WYREEMA STATE SCHOOL WEEKLY CHALLENGE In Week 4 at Wyreema, students participated in a Weekly Challenge. Each day a new challenge was issued to each class in the school.

Challenges included modelling great sportsmanship during lunchtime play, transitioning around school in Warrior lines and representing our Warrior values during HPE lessons.

The class which accumulated the most points by the end of the week earned themselves an extra PE lesson.

The scores were extremely tight with only points separating each of the classes.

Congratulations to our Year 5/6 class which gained bonus points, during lunchtime play, to take out the first challenge of the term.

Seven lives lost during Operation Zero

Operation Zero, run throughout the Southern Region in July, saw hundreds of police out in force targeting zero road trauma for the month however the total was seven, two fewer than in 2021.

Letters To the Editor GOVERNMENTAL PROBLEMS To the Editor, Over the last few years the Toowoomba Region has been aware of the homelessness issue and housing and land supply crisis.

Many meetings were held and many prominent groups voiced their concerns at the issue.

The time then was right for solutions, the opportunities then were right to formulate strategies, and develop policies to address the oncoming issues.

Yet here we are - as a Region we are facing the worst rental crisis of our generation and land supply and development opportunities are at an all time low.

Anybody wanting to get into the rental world will testify to this.

Our region also cannot meet the demand rates for international refugees or at risk families - something Toowoomba used to be proud of.

All levels of government work for the people - and while there can be finger pointing and lack of responsibility taken by saying, “that’s a State decision... or a Federal Decision” then work towards fixing these social issues.

Too much politics gets in the way of social demands.

Even if $100 million dropped on the “money tree” tonight the building sector will take years to meet the demand.

So many missed opportunities that should have been taken years ago.

Grants boosting small businesses

Small businesses ready to take their business to the next level are being encouraged by the Queensland Government to apply for a grant up to $15,000.

The grants can boost turnover, increase workforce or improve resilience.

Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer (right) said details of the next round of the popular Business Boost grants are now available with businesses able to register their interest in applying from 9am this Friday, 12 August.

“For this round of the Business Boost grants, $2.5 million worth of grants are on offer to Queensland small businesses that are seeing positive growth and are looking to expand further,” Ms Farmer said.

“Previous recipients of the grant have used the funds to do a range of business boosting projects such as introducing an online booking system, redeveloping websites, building a tailor made workplace health and safety system and staff training.

“These are great, innovative Queensland businesses that know what they need to keep growing and just need the extra investment to reach their goals.”

To be eligible, small businesses need to employ less than 20 employees and have had a turnover between $300,000 and $600,000 in the last financial year.

Businesses will need to co-contribute at least 30 per cent of the total cost of their proposed project with grant funding paid to successful small businesses following completion of the project.

To manage applications for the grants, a new two-stage process has been introduced.

First, businesses register their interest to apply by completing a simple online form that collects basic business information.

Registration will be open until midnight on 19 August.

The second stage will see a number of businesses selected through a ballot process to be invited to complete a full application.

This format means all interested business owners have an equal opportunity to apply.

Last Sunday, off to the Ekka we did go.

Our hearts were light, we all love the show.

Cambooya State School HERMITAGE RESEARCH FACILITY SCHOOLS PLANT SCIENCE COMPETITION Native Foods was the theme for this year’s Science Competition run by the Hermitage Research Facility in Warwick.

The competition was developed to help stimulate an interest in science in agriculture.

Each year participants are able to participate in the science competition as well as an Art in Agriculture section.

This year, there was an extra incentive to submit an art project as one of the prizes on offer was an opportunity to work with local Warwick artist, Christopher Hulme.

William Boddington, a Year 5 student at Cambooya State School was lucky enough to be chosen as one of three artists to work with Mr Hulme to recreate his piece of art into a mosaic using ceramic tiles.

William recently spent a day with Mr Hulme recreating his artwork so that it can be set in stone at the Research Facility’s roadside information centre.

We can’t wait to see William’s piece of art on display!

Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club

It was great to see all of the athletes and sports people from Australia performing so well at the Commonwealth Games, especially a couple from the local Darling Downs area in the hockey and or course, Matt Denny in the discus.

The works happening as part of the master plan for the Lions Park to Sports Club area are almost complete, but please do not use the alternate route via Carinya Drive as trucks may still need to use this entry to drop off and take materials.

Our annual general meeting this year will be held on Sunday the 28th August.

It will be held at 11am followed by a barbecue lunch.
