ACEA RUN ROME THE MARATHON SPORTS EVENT MORE AND MORE SUSTAINABLE
ROMA – Ever since its debut in 2021 one of the greatest challenges of Acea Run Rome The Marathon is to become a more sustainable marathon, and it is not easy to achieve the final result for Italy’s most attended sport event, that will include about 30,000 subscriptions including the marathon, the solidary relay Acea Run4Rome and the Stracittadina SN4I FUN Run.
Several goals have already been achieved, others are even more ambitious and require more time, but the challenge and the final aim are as important as possible. For the next edition on 19th March 2023 the organizers of the event, Infront Italy, Corriere dello Sport – Stadium, Italian Marathon Club and Atielle, In partnership with Sustainability Partner Circularity - Benefit Society operating in the world of circular economy - are taking auction in order to reduce the environmental impact of the marathon.

“Sustainable management”, certified ISO 20121 - the organization has adopted a sustainable management system that allowed it to obtain ISO 20121 “Sustainable Event Management” certification, released by Ente Certificatore Rina. The starting point to define the sustainable development policy of the event has been about evaluating economic, social and environmental impacts of the event with clear and pragmatic objectives: economically, to reduce, reuse and recycle in order to limit waste; socially, to promote and adopt ethical behaviors and record the environmental impacts in order to reduce the negative ones and optimize the positive ones.
The management of the organization, basing on the indications imposed by the ISO 20121 international standard, has so defined a formal document of “Sustainable Development Politics”, in accordance with the objective of Acea Run Rome The Marathon, shared with its stakeholders. Particularly, the main stakeholders have received a picture of evaluation of their respective goals and contributes, regarding sustainable development goals, in accordance with the Indication of 2030 Agenda written by United Nations: our system of guidelines with the aim of meeting the demands of constant improvement of the management system of Acea Run Rome The Marathon.
2021 And 2022 Results
Among the results there is the reduction of food waste, a more sustainable mobility, compensation of CO2 emissions, a better use of resources and waste.
Running is sustainable: it requires passion, perseverance and persistency. Who runs knows that everything depends on the impact with the ground and to speed up you need to be light. This is how Acea Run Rome The Marathon with his circularity partner, zero CO2, Banco Alimentare Roma, Rina and Plastic Free Odv Onlus, wants to be: light on the impact, quickly reaching the finish line. A goal that sees a reduced environmental impact in 2023, mostly in the reduction of food waste, sustainable mobility, compensation of emissions a better use of resources and waste.
In the past editions, thanks to the active contribute of Banco Alimentare Roma ODV Association and to the initiatives that were organized with circularity and sustainability partners, among others, 40 tons of water where collected, 16 tons of isotonic beverages, 170 kg of oranges, 950 kg of apples, 328 kg of food, 90 kg of bananas, 100 kg of snacks, 3920 T-shirts and 2400 bags for a total of 64 tons. This is a contribute that assumes a social value as well, because the network provides with assistance and over 100,000 indigents in the city of Rome and in Lazio.
Trees are considered as the most efficient and cheap technology that is able to compensate greenhouse gasses: Acea Run Rome The Marathon, in partnership with zero CO2 and thanks to the contribute of the participants of the marathon, has created, between 2022 and 2023 a forest of 6000 trees in Guatemala that allows to absorb 3870 tons of CO2.
The attention is also particularly focused on the means of transport that are used during the race, for the mobility of the athletes and their equipment: the existent fleet has been supplemented until it reached a donation of up to 60% of the means of transport that use hybrid or completely electric power supply. In the past two years, Acea Run Rome The Marathon has also improved its circularity level, selecting and collecting waste that was destined to recycling. The waste generated from the marathon have been 13,910 kg, 1670 kilos of which consists of plastic and 1740 kilos of paper.
The activity of collecting and selecting has allowed the start of recycling 54% of plastic, almost equal to 902 kilos, and 85% of paper, equal 1479 kg of retrieved paper.
The organization of the Marathon of Rome has put in effort so as to make it one of Italy’s most sustainable events, thanks to our strategy and our development plan that includes the effort of the organizers of the event, along with the stockholders and the involved partners. The model of sustainability that the Marathon of Rome has been implementing can become the best practice to replicate on the occasion of the big sports and cultural events in Italy, such as football games or concerts – comments Camilla Colucci, founder and CEO of circularity.
The Next Goals And News Of 2023 Edition
Circularity assists the Marathon of Rome in its sustainable journey and deals with estimating and recording the emissions of the event to identify solutions of reduction and compensation that are more and more efficient. It also accompanies the marathon towards the goal of becoming “plastic free”, beyond having contributed to an important news of this edition: thanks to G-Tech partner, two eco-ecompactors will be installed, that select plastic waste reducing their volume, that will be placed inside the Expo area of the event.
Acea Run Rome The Marathon commits to planting over 3000 trees in this year edition (in addition to the three thousands of last year) in Guatemala, Pèten region, with the double aim of absorbing CO2 emissions and supporting the economy and the nutrition of local farming families. All the participants can contribute in the moments of the subscription to Acea Run Rome The Marathon forest by purchasing one or more trees in order to fight against CO2 emissions.
Moreover, circularity has realized formation activities and workshops about specific needs of the Organization in order to supplement the principles of sustainability and circular economy inside their organizing strategy. Furthermore, SDGs (sustainable development goals) were identified, that are connected to the virtuous initiatives that are implemented.
The ambitious aim of Acea Run Rome The Marathon for the next years is achieving carbon neutrality. In order to efficiently and concretely respond to the challenges that are necessary for a more sustainable marathon, circularity has in fact structured a road map on a long term started in 2021 edition, introducing a path of sustainability with the aim of recording - with transparency and constant improvement - the carbon footprint of the most impacting activities of the event, supplementing virtuous initiatives of sustainability and circular economy that allow the reduction of the measured emissions.

The turtle is the new mascot of Acea Run Rome The Marathon, in agreement with WWF, it was chosen as a symbol of support for the endangered species.

Every advertisement banner in TNT(fabric not fabric) placed on the day of the race on the fences that indicates the path are made of recycled materials, in the spirit of supporting our growing attention on the topic of environmental protection, including the delivery processes and in general in the whole organization of the sports event.
